Specimens of the squidAbralia veranyi were collected off the Bahamas in 1989. The bioluminescence of the ventral photophores was recorded on videotape at 11 to 12°C and 24°C, in conjunction with measurements of the spectral emission at the same temperatures. At 11 °C, the spectrum was unimodal, peaking at 490 nm with a narrow bandwidth. At the higher temperature a shoulder at about 440 nm appeared in the emission spectrum. The short, bright flashes from the subocular photophores had a broader bandwidth and a shorter wavelength emission maximum (475 nm) than that of the ventral photophores. Video recordings at the two temperatures showed no changes in either the identities of the luminescing photophores or their relative intensities. One structurally distinct type of photophore was not illuminated. We conclude that the observed spectral changes were produced within one group of photophores, and that recruitment of the unilluminated photophores would produce an additional spectral component, previously reported from another species ofAbralia (A. trigonura).  相似文献

In most areas of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, diatoms have declined drastically in abundance in the last decade. Additionally, in areas to the north of 59°N Ceratium species and an index of total phytoplankton have also declined. South of 59°N the phytoplankton index has increased, diatoms have declined and Ceratium species have remained at a constant level of abundance. A possible explanation of the increase in the phytoplankton index at a time when the diatoms were declinig south of 59°N is the development of unidentified phytoplankton organisms such as microflagellates. As many of the variables influencing phytoplankton standing crop are governed in turn by the prevailing weather, the phytoplankton changes may well be a consequence of the general deterioration, since 1940, of North Atlantic weather. Changes in phytoplankton which may be attributed to an amelioration of climate since 1971 are evident as yet only in the southern North Sea.  相似文献

Geographic ranges of marine intertidal organisms are not entirely governed by discontinuities in temperature gradients. This is especially true in the eastern north Pacific Ocean, where temperature gradation is less steep than in the western north Atlantic Ocean. The southern limit of distribution of Littorina sitkana (Philippi, 1845) and the northern limit of L. planaxis (Philippi, 1847) occur at Charleston, Oregon (Latitude 43.4°N). No discontinuity in air or water temperature can be correlated with these distributional boundaries. A third species, L. scutulata (Gould, 1849), has the widest range, overlapping with L. planaxis in the south and L. sitkana in the north (Latitude 27.5° to 58°N). L. planaxis transplanted to northern Washington survived for 4 years, grew and produced planktonic larvae. Either larval mortality or south-flowing currents during planktonic life prevent this species from dispersing northward. L. sitkana has direct development and occurs only in habitats where adults are sheltered from waves and egg masses from desiccation. Lack of suitable habitat, coupled with the presence of the predatory crab Pachygrapsus crassipes (Randall, 1839) prevent the southward establishment of L. sitkana.  相似文献

Biremis, n. gen., characterized by an enlarged cephalic lobe, achaetous thoracic segments, and abdominal bilobed uncinigerous pinnules, lacks eyes and branchiae and is, thus, grouped with the subfamily Polycirrinae of the Terebellidae. Biremis blandi, n. sp., has prominent longitudinal muscular ventral ridges, lacking ventral glandular scutes. The avicular uncini, arranged in a single row on each lobe of each abdominal pinnule, are very similar to those of Polycirrus. The new species, collected from D.S.R.V. Alvin, was observed resting on and swimming over the sloping walls of the Tongue of the Ocean (25° N; 77°35 W), at 600 m depth. Its ability to swim may be a requirement for survival on an unstable substratum.Contribution No. 2891 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  相似文献

The infratidal zonation of animals in a 35 m deep fjord-like South African estuary is described. The barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin and the bivalve Musculus virgiliae Barnard form the uppermost zone and extend to a depth of 9 m. The oyster Crassostrea margaritacea (Lam.) forms a zone between 1 and 3 m depth while the sponge Grantessa ramosa (Haeckel) occurs between 3 and 7 m. The tubiculous polychaete Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel is the only species found below 10 m, and attains a depth of 33 m. In the wet season (summer) the surface salinity dropped to 2 and temperatures rose to 24°C. In the dry season (winter) surface salinity rose to 24 and temperatures dropped to 16°C. Salinity and temperature of deep water (6 to 33 m) were more stable and varied only between 32.5 and 35 and between 19.6° and 20.5°C, respectively. In June, water below 12 m was 50 to 60% saturated with oxygen but this declined to less than 5% saturation in January.  相似文献

This study aimed at contributing to the identification of the sardine populations in the Moroccan Atlantic. The approach used is enzymes electrophoresis (allozymic marker analysis). The analysis was conducted in seven stations (251 individuals analysed). Two enzymes were tested (LDH* and SOD*). Only the SOD* was polymorphic and highly informative. Statistical analysis results showed heterogeneity between samples. Homogeneous population was identified in the south, from Tarfaya to Dakhla (~28°–24°N). The sampling from Safi (~32°N) seems to come from a differentiated population. The Agadir (~30°N) population would overlap the previous ones. The population identified offshore of Larache (~35°N) would be similar to the population located south of Portugal (~37°N).  相似文献

The pteropod Clione limacina (Phipps, 1774) is an arcticboreal, circumpolar species, which is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and Subarctic Oceans; it also occurs in the North Pacific Ocean (in the Oyashio and neighbouring waters) and along the Atlantic coast of North America in the waters of the cold Labrador current to the Cape Hatteras region (35° N). The distribution of C. limacina larvae in the plankton of the Norwegian, Barents and White Seas, the Bear Island-Spitsbergen region of the Greenland Sea, the Newfoundland Grand Bank and the Flemish-Cap Bank region of the North-western Atlantic Ocean, and the Kurile-Kamchatka region of the North-western Pacific Ocean has been studied, and information from literature concerning the reproduction and larval occurrence of the species is summarized. Throughout its distributional are, spawning of C. limacina is characterized by the same general ecological pattern. This species breeds and spawns in all types of water masses occurring within the vertical range which it commonly inhabits — from surface layers to 500 m water depth. In all local populations of the species, the most intensive spawning is correlated with the spring/summer period of annual heating of the local waters, and the highest abundance parallels maximum growth of phytoplankton which serves as food for veligers and early polytrochous larvae. After the end of this period, spawning intensity in all local C. limacina populations declines sharply, but spawning continues at low intensity during the autumn/winter season, being practically continuous throughout the year. Distribution patterns of C. limacina larvae are determined by those of their parental forms (the parental forms spawn in the zones permanently inhabited). The earliest larval stages of C. limacina (veligers) are present predominantly in the upper 100 or 200 m water layer, i.e. in the zone of high phytoplankton abundance. Polytrochous larvae, after becoming predaceous feeders, are distributed throughout the whole water column from the surface to 500 m depth, similar to adult C. limacina. As with the adults, larvae are present (within the species' distribution area) in all types of water masses. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, in the course of the warming of the Arctic Ocean, the southern race of C. limacina (formerly a summer/autumn seasonal invader in the Norwegian Sea) has become a permanent component of the plankton fauna of the Norwegian and Barents Seas in regions influenced by the Norwegian-Northcape Current System.  相似文献

The specific activity of 55Fe in plankton increased from below detectable limits at 20°N to a maximum of 130 nCi/g Fe at 20°S and then decreased to 5 nCi/g Fe at 50°S. Along an east-west track near 15°S a peak of 90 nCi/g Fe occurred at 135°W. It is suggested that this maximum is the result of fallout from French nuclear tests at Mururoa Atoll (22°S; 139°W). The increase in 55Fe at high latitudes observed in previous studies in the North Atlantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean did not occur in the South Pacific Ocean which supports the suggestion that belts of high tropospheric fallout accounted for the increase in the Northern oceans.  相似文献

Lower and upper survival temperatures of microthalli of 25 species of South American Phaeophyceae isolated from central Peru (14°S) to the Canal Beagle (55°S) were determined using 2-wk exposure for the upper and 4-wk exposure for the lower limit. All species survive 4 wks at -2°C. With respect to the upper limit, species reported only from southernmost South America tolerate 19.9 to 24.5°C (n=8), and species occurring from Cape Horn to central Chile 24.6 to 27.4°C (n=7). Three species that occurred as far north as northern Chile and Peru before the 1982–1983 El Niño event, and whose northern limit was dramatically shifted southwards in 1983, tolerate 20.8 to 25.3°C, whereas five species that have survived in Peru tolerate 25.6 to 28.5°C. Tinocladia falklandica which tolerates 27.8 to 28.1°C but lives only in southernmost South America and Striaria attenuata, which tolerates 31.6 to 31.9°C but occurs at ca. 42°S, are exceptional. Their high temperature tolerance may have no adaptive value in South America. They are restricted to the cold-temperate region due to low temperature requirements for reproduction or for reasons yet unknown. In general, the northern distributional limits of the Phaeophyceae studied along the temperate Pacific coast of South America are reproduction boundaries, except in El Niño years when they are redefined according to the species' upper suvival limits. Temperature tolerance of isolates from northern Chile and Peru agrees well with maximum temperatures reached during the 1983 El Niño.  相似文献

The time periods from exhausion of the yolk to the age of irreversible starvation for Pacific herring Clupea harengus pallasi larvae were 8.5, 7.0 and 6.0 d at 6°, 8° and 10°C, respectively. These periods are within the range perviously measured for Atlantic herring larvae and other temperature zone fish species; they are long compared to the periods for tropical species. The variation in the length of this period is due almost entirely to temperature; the natural logarithm of the time period from fertilization to irreversible starvation is highly correlated (r=0.91) with the mean rearing temperature for 25 species of pelagic marine fish larvae. The rates of growth and mortality, measured for 26 experimental populations of Pacific herring larvae reared at 6°, 8° and 10°C and ten ages of delayed first feeding, decreased and increased, respectively with increasing age of first feeding and increasing temperature. These rates, adjusted for the effects of rearing conditions, were compared with the rates for natural populations of herring larvae. Growth is generally faster in the sea than in experimental enclosures. Two of the eleven estimates of natural mortality rate were high enough to indicate possible catastrophic mass starvation. This is consistent with Hjort's critical period concept of year class formation and it suggests that mass starvation occurs in 18 to 36% of the natural populations of first feeding herring larvae.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifers collected in the marine littoral zone (sensu lato) of Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil have been studied and compared with the Foraminifera collections from the same area studied previously. Two figures have been prepared, which show the geographical range and relative abundance of the most important species (cosmopolitan and non-cosmopolitan). The following biogeographical conclusions were drawn on the basis of an analysis of these figures. The whole area, from a latitude of about 32° S up to the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego, should be considered as one biogeographical unit (a kingdom of Buccella peruviana, sensu lato). This unit has 2 internal boundaries, which are located approximately at latitudes 41° and 52° S. They divide the whole area into 3 sub-areas which can be called (from North to South): North Patagonian (32° to 41° S), South Patagonian (41° to 52° S) and Malvinian (52° S—southern coast of Tierra del Fuego). With the exception of Buccella peruviana, sensu lato, which is typical of all 3 sub-areas, these sub-areas are characterized by the following faunal features. The North Patagonian sub-area contains abundant numbers of Elphidium discoidale. The South Patagonian sub-area is characterized by abundant numbers of Elphidium macellum. The Malvinian sub-area contains abundant numbers of Elphidium macellum, and also several very typical representatives of the Malvin current water, for instance, Cassidulina crassa, sensu stricto, Angulogerina angulosa, Uvigerina bifurcata, Cassidulinoides parkerianus, Ehrenbergina pupa and others. It is a matter of opinion whether the sub-areas cited be considered biogeographical sub-provinces, or even smaller units. They cannot be interpreted as biogeographical provinces.Contribution No. 62 of the Puerto Deseado Marine Biological Station.  相似文献

Nitrogen regeneration by the surf zone penaeid prawn Macropetasma africanus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nitrogen excretion of individual Macropetasma africanus (Balss) from an exposed beach/surf zone in Algoa Bay, South Africa was monitored under laboratory and field conditions in relation to body mass, temperature and feeding during 1985. Excretion rate experiments were performed on starved prawns at 15°, 18°, 20° and 25°C, as well as on individuals fed on four different diets (mussel, fish, shrimp and natural diet) at 15° and 20°C. The ratios of the excreted compounds to total nitrogen excreted were similar for the four diets despite differences in their nitrogen content and in the amount of food consumed. At 15° and 20°C, ammonia excretion rates of fed individuals were four to seven times higher than in starved prawns. the excretion rates were not correlated with nitrogen content of diets. M. africanus recycles 1 557 g NH4–N per metre strip per year or 1 832 g total nitrogen m-1 yr-1, which constitute 12 and 14%, respectively, of total phytoplankton requirements of the surf zone. This study indicates that large motile crustaceans, when abundant, can play an important role in nutrient recycling in turbulent marine environments.  相似文献

Egg production ofCalanus finmarchicus at low temperature   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Reproduction ofCalanus finmarchicus Gunnerus collected in June 1988 in Polar water and in April 1989 in Atlantic water was studied. Single females were kept at 0°C in the laboratory for 22 d (Polar) and 77 d (Atlantic) with superabundant food concentration (> 400µg Cl–1) of the diatomThalassiosira antarctica. There was no significant difference between the two populations, although more spent females were found in Polar water, probably due to the different dates of collection. The hypothesis of low temperature determining the geographic range ofC. finmarchicus via reproductive failure is not supported. Mean daily egg production rate of all females from Atlantic water over a 60 d period was 24.4, corresponding to 5.5% body C female–1 d–1, when an egg carbon content of 0.23µg is assumed. Coefficient of variation was 25%. Maximum values were 53.2 eggs female–1 d–1, corresponding to 12.1% body C d–1. The highest number of eggs spawned by a single female was 3101, corresponding to a seven-fold turnover of body C during the investigation period; >20% of females produced > 2000 eggs. Body carbon content did not change significantly during the experiment; the C:N ratio increased slightly, indicating lipid accumulation. Delay of response to starvation periods of 2, 4 and 7 d duration was always 2 d: egg production ceased 2 d after the onset of starvation and continued 2 d after onset of feeding.  相似文献

Respiration rates of Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux in Florida, USA, generally increased with increased temperature. Gulf coast H. musciformis respired at significantly higher rates than the Atlantic coast population, which exhibited a region of temperature independence between 24°–32°C. Respiration rates were highest in the fall and winter, during the periods of rapid growth. Respiration rates were lowest in the summer indicating a period of storage and low metabolism. Photosynthetic responses to various levels of light and temperature indicated that the Gulf coast population was more tolerant to high light intensities than the Atlantic coast population. Maximum photosynthetic responses for both populations occurred between 24° and 32°C which corresponds to the shallow slope region of the respiration-temperature curves. The results indicate that water temperature rather than light intensity is a significant factor in modifying seasonal photosynthetic capacities. The greatest seasonal variation in photosynthetic responses occurred at the light-temperature levels of highest responses while little seasonal variation was demonstrated at tolerance limits.  相似文献

This project was desinged to confirm the temporal consistency of inter-site differences in recruitment of an intertidal gastropod, and to test the hypothesis that these differences are accounted for by differences in shore topography. Annual recruitment of the intertidal sanil Nassarius pauperatus (Lamarck) was estimated at two sandflats in Gulf St Vincent, South Australia, over a period of 12 yr (1979 to 1990). At one sandflat the gradient was slight, the zone containing N. pauperatus was wide, and there were extensive pools of water at low tide, whilst at the other sandflat the gradient was steeper, the zone containing N. pauperatus was narrower, and there were fewer or no pools. Although recruitment at both sites varied temporally, the density of recruits was always higher at the first site. These data, together with data covering 10 yr (1981–1990) from a sandflat where the gradient of the substratum was decreasing due to accretion of sediment, suggest that shore topography is an important determinant of relative recruitment for N. pauperatus in South Australia.  相似文献

Organisms have travelled the Atlantic Ocean as neuston and have rafted on natural marine debris for millions of years. Shipping increased opportunities for marine organism travel mere thousands of years ago but in just decades floating plastic debris is transforming marine rafting. Here we present a combined open-ocean and remote coasts marine debris survey of the Atlantic (from 68°S–78°N). Daily shipboard observations were made from the Southern Ocean to the high Arctic and the shores of 16 remote islands were surveyed. We report (1) anthropogenic debris from the most northerly and southerly latitudes to date, (2) the first record of marine biota colonising debris at latitudes >68°, and (3) the finding of exotic species (the barnacle Elminius modestus) on northern plastic debris. Plastic pieces dominated both open-ocean and stranding marine debris. The highest densities of oceanic debris were found around northwest Europe, whereas the highest stranding levels were equatorial. Our findings of high east-Arctic debris colonisation by fauna contrast with low values from west Arctic (though only two samples) and south Atlantic shores. Colonisation rates of debris differed between hemispheres, previously considered to be similar. Our two South Atlantic mega-debris shipboard surveys (10 years apart) found no changes in open-ocean debris densities but resurvey of a UK and an Arctic island both found increases. We put our findings in the context of the Atlantic literature to interpret spatial and temporal trends in marine debris accumulation and its organismal consequences.Communicated by J.P. We studied the population dynamics and the reproductive biology of Penilia avirostris during three consecutive years on the inner shelf off Ubatuba, Brazil. Penilia avirostris individuals and its eggs and embryos were counted, measured, and classified into stages. The species occurred throughout the studied period, in a wide temperature range (14.8–28.2°C). Cladoceran densities were usually higher (>2,000 ind m−3) in warm seasons, when the water column was stratified as a consequence of bottom intrusions of the cold- and nutrient-rich South Atlantic Central Water. Juveniles, non-reproducing females, and parthenogenic females were the dominant developmental stages. Males and gamogenic females were rare and only occurred when females reached peak abundances. This suggests that in tropical and subtropical coastal seas gamogenesis in P. avirostris is not as common as in temperate seas, but may play a significant role in the density-dependent control of the population preceding unfavourable periods.  相似文献

On the near-surface plankton of the eastern South Pacific Ocean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A study has been made of the plankton of the near-surface water layer (0 to 30 cm) of the eastern South Pacific Ocean in the region lying to the east of the meridian 90°W, between latitudes 5°N and 35°S. This region is influenced by the Peru Current: the current brings water from high latitudes, which results in a decrease in the number of species of the local fauna of copepods of the family Pontellidae, typical of tropical near-surface plankton. Some of the widely tropical and one bicentral species are absent or rare. Least affected by the Peru Current are the waters of equatorial structure in the northern part of the region. Here, 7 species of pontellids were recorded: the widely tropical Labidocera detruncata, Pontella tenuiremis, Pontellopsis regalis, the distant-neritic Pontella danae and Labidocera acuta, the bicentral Labidocera acutifrons, and the neritic Pontellopsis lubbockii. The dominant species among these are L. detruncata and L. acuta. To the west of the convergence, in the southern part of the region, live the southern central species Pontella valida and P. whiteleggei, with Pontellopsis regalis occurring occasionally. In these regions the copepod fauna is frequently dominated by pontellids. To the south of the boundary of the waters of equatorial structure, between the coast of South America and the line of convergence, lies a region most subjected to the effect of waters from high latitudes and of upwellings. It is inhabited by 2 pontellids only: Pontellopsis regalis and Labidocera acutifrons, but they too disappear close to the coast. In this particular region the copepods Calanus australis and Centropages brachiatus are common; they are found in a thicker water layer (0 to 200 m), and are often more abundant than the pontellids.  相似文献

The ivory tree coral Oculina varicosa (Leseur, 1820) is an ahermatypic branching scleractinian that colonizes limestone ledges at depths of 6–100 m along the Atlantic coast of Florida. This paper describes the development of embryos and larvae from shallow-water O. varicosa, collected at 6–8 m depth in July 1999 off Fort Pierce, Florida (27°32.542 N; 79°58.732 W). The effect of temperature on embryogenesis, larval survival, and larval swimming speed were examined in the laboratory. Ontogenetic changes in geotaxis and phototaxis were also investigated. Embryos developed via spiral cleavage from small (100 µm), negatively buoyant eggs. Ciliated larvae developed after 6–9 h at 25°C. Embryogenesis ceased at 10°C, was inhibited at 17°C, and progressed normally at 25°C and 30°C. Larval survival, however, was high across the full range of experimental temperatures (11–31°C), although mortality increased in the warmest treatments (26°C and 31°C). Larval swimming speed was highest at 25°C, and lower at the temperature extremes (5°C and 35°C). An ontogenetic change in geotaxis was observed; newly ciliated larvae swam to the water surface and remained there for approximately 18 h, after which they swam briefly throughout the water column, then became demersal. Early larvae showed no response to light stimulation, but at 14 and 23 days larvae appeared to exhibit negatively phototactic behavior. Although low temperatures inhibited the development of O. varicosa embryos, the larvae survived temperature extremes for extended periods of time. Ontogenetic changes in larval behavior may ensure that competent larvae are close to the benthos to facilitate settlement. Previous experiments on survival, swimming speeds, and observations on behavior of O. varicosa larvae from deep-water adults indicate that there is no difference between larvae of the deep and shallow populations.Communicated by J.P. The spatial distribution of the most abundant eggs and larvae of teleost fish species on the continental shelf and slope off the northern Benguela region was studied in April 1986. The horizontal and vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were analysed together with environmental data, in order to determine patterns of ichthyoplankton distribution. Both species composition and relative egg and larval abundance levels exhibited important latitudinal differences during a period of quiescent upwelling with an intense intrusion of Angolan water into the system. Larval diversity was higher in the northern part of the study area, where, because of the intrusion of the warmer Angolan water, the water column was more stratified than in the southern part, where the affect of upwelling of South Atlantic Central Water was continuous and only a few species spawned. The frontal zone appeared to be a nursery ground for the most important pelagic species of the region:Trachurus trachurus capensis, Engraulis capensis, andSardinops ocellatus. Vertical egg and larval distributions showed evidence of stratification, with highest concentrations located in the uppermost 50 m. In comparison, during periods of intense upwelling, longitudinal gradients were responsible for the horizontal distribution of ichthyoplankton, and the vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were much more extensive because of the greater mixing of the water column.  相似文献
