BRA-2, a major C-type lectin in the hemolymph of the acorn barnacle Megabalanus rosa was detected in shell-associated proteins. Immobilized BRA-2 promoted CaCO3 crystallization as determined by an in vitro pH-drift mineralization assay. In nature, calcification occurs as wound repair in M. rosa after breakage of the shell plate. To observe this phenomenon, we inserted a rubber cube inside the mantle cavity of M. rosa through the basal plate, and kept the organisms in a tank for several weeks. The rubber cube was covered first with brownish-colored material, probably a melanin, and then with CaCO3 5 weeks after the insertion. In the CaCO3-associated proteins, BRA-3, a minor component of M. rosa hemolymph lectins, was present in addition to BRA-2. The presence of both the lectins and their ligands on the hemocyte was also observed. These results suggest that the C-type lectins of the M. rosa hemolymph participate in mineralization as well as defense in these organisms.  相似文献

Fish at the top of the food chain bioaccumulate and biomagnify toxic metals including mercury (Hg), at a higher rate than nonpredatory fish. However, although some top predator fish species are important in the human diet, the risks for consumers in Mexico are difficult to evaluate due to the scarce baseline information available. In the present article, data on the total mercury (THg) concentrations found in edible tissues of different species of sharks, rays, large pelagic fishes and groupers from the Gulf of California are presented and compared with national and international health guidelines. During 2003 and 2004, 73 shark dorsal tissue samples, 52 ray samples, 66 large pelagic fish samples and 16 grouper samples were collected at different sites along the Gulf of California. Samples were digested in a microwave system and analyzed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Thirty samples (14%) showed concentrations of Hg above the national statutory limit of 1?mg?kg?1, from which 25 samples were sharks and 3 were large pelagic fishes. A positive correlation was found between the natural log of THg [ln(THg)] and total length (TL cm) in species of sharks, rays and groupers. The Teacapán estuary in Sinaloa was detected as a possible source of Hg into the Gulf of California due to historic mining in the watershed. Mean Hg concentrations exceeded the regulatory limit of 1?mg?kg?1 in the following highly commercial shark species: smooth hammerhead, pelagic thrasher, pacific sharpnose shark, dusky shark, scalloped hammerhead, and whitenose shark, in that order. It is recommended that preventive food advisories be issued with respect to these species until further investigations are conducted.  相似文献

Between November 1982 and August 1984 diving observations of two intertidal limpets' defensive behaviours in response to two predatory species were made near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyoto University, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, for over 800 h. The focus of the observations was a simple isolated rock, 0.9 m2 in area with an inclination of 75°. The pulmonate homing limpet Siphonaria sirius responded by fleeing from its home in response to the whelk Thais clavigera and by calmping tightly to its home scar in response to the starfish Coscinasterias acutispina. Both behaviours were successful for avoiding predation. After a whelk moved far away, limpets returned to their homes. The patellid limpet Cellana toreuma showed mantle folding behaviour or fled for an average distance of 8 cm vertically upwards in response to the whelk and for an average distance of 21 cm vertically upwards in response to the starfish. The amount of time predators spent foraging increased in the low intertidal zone relative to the mid and high zones, and most predator attacks were observed during the limpets' resting periods (submersion in late afternoon or nighttime). The upward directional flight displayed by C. toreuma was related to the upward orientation of the limpets' heads when they are in a resting position. Half of the limpets observed fleeing downward away from a starfish, a movement elicited by a downward attack, received a second attack. These limpets were preyed upon at the second encounter 67% of the time. The upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma resulted in the shifting of its resting site higher up the study site where fewer attacks occurred and where the mortality rate was at its lowest. It is suggested that the homing behaviour of S. sirius and the upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma are mechanisms by means of which interspecific competition between limpets is reduced and coexistence on a small rock surface is maintained.  相似文献

Primary productivity data from 6 cruises in the Gulf of California are summarized. A total of 31 stations with 133 samples was available. The Gulf of California represents a subtropical area with exceptionally high rates of primary productivity. This fact may be accounted for by temporary seasonal upwelling, a wind-mixed water column down to the shallow thermocline, especially in the northern part of the Gulf, and by tidal mixing, especially in the Ballenas Channel between Baja California and the island Angel de la Guardia. Rates of primary productivity in the Gulf of California are comparable to those in areas such as the Bay of Bengal, the upwelling areas off the west coast of Baja California, or North Africa. They are about 2 to 3 times greater than that in the open Atlantic or the open Pacific at similar latitudes.Contribution from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. Wave action and low population density can strongly reduce the ability of sessile acorn barnacles to find mates and copulate. For Semibalanus balanoides, penis morphology varies with wave exposure and with characteristics of the mating neighborhood. Field experiments were conducted at five intertidal sites on Long Island, New York, USA from July to December 2005 to determine how wave exposure and aggregation structure influence the length, diameter, mass, and number of annulated folds of the penis. Sparsely crowded barnacles had more annulations in the penis and are inferred to have greater ability to stretch. At higher wave exposure, the diameter of the penis was greater, but the mass was not. This study identifies density of crowding as the most important cue that barnacles respond to when perceiving their mating group and details how penis morphology varies in response to wave exposure.  相似文献

Population distributions, densities and percentage deaths and individual size variations of the barnacles Chthamalus stellatus and Tetraclita squamosa, and the distribution of the vermetid snail Spirogluphus annulatus are measured to clarify determinants the Florida Keys (USA). The species composition of the pilings community and barnacle population densities correspond to physical gradients dependent on piling distance from shore. Interspecific competition for space is insignificant in determining C. stellatus presence or absence on pilings. Intraspecific crowding in highdensity zones of adult T. squamosa is evidenced by a significant decrease in basal diameter as density increases. The peak percentage of dead C. stellatus coincides with peak densities. The percentage of dead T. squamosa is at a low point at peak densities due to the ability of T. squamosa cyprids to settle and survive on adult shells in high-density regions. Feasible perturbation experiments for testing the importance of interspecific competition in determining the densities and vertical distributions of the species are discussed. The results of such experiments can be used to test the assumptions and predictions of the widely applied competition coefficient measure proposed by Levins (1968). Several theoretical deficiencies of Levins' measure are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract:  Commercial and subsistence fisheries pressure is increasing in the Gulf of California, Mexico. One consequence often associated with high levels of fishing pressure is an increase in bycatch of marine mammals and birds. Fisheries bycatch has contributed to declines in several pinniped species and may be affecting the California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus ) population in the Gulf of California. We used data on fisheries and sea lion entanglement in gill nets to estimate current fishing pressure and fishing rates under which viable sea lion populations could be sustained at 11 breeding sites in the Gulf of California. We used 3 models to estimate sustainable bycatch rates: a simple population-growth model, a demographic model, and an estimate of the potential biological removal. All models were based on life history and census data collected for sea lions in the Gulf of California. We estimated the current level of fishing pressure and the acceptable level of fishing required to maintain viable sea lion populations as the number of fishing days (1 fisher/boat setting and retrieving 1 day's worth of nets) per year. Estimates of current fishing pressure ranged from 101 (0–405) fishing days around the Los Machos breeding site to 1887 (842–3140) around the Los Islotes rookery. To maintain viable sea lion populations at each site, the current level of fishing permissible could be augmented at some sites and should be reduced at other sites. For example, the area around San Esteban could support up to 1428 (935–2337) additional fishing days, whereas fishing around Lobos should be reduced by at least 165 days (107–268). Our results provide conservation practitioners with site-specific guidelines for maintaining sustainable sea lion populations and provide a method to estimate fishing pressure and sustainable bycatch rates that could be used for other marine mammals and birds .  相似文献

Summary Auditory tuning curves of a small songbird, the great tit (Parus major), and of its principal avian predator, the European sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), were determined by an operant positive reinforcement conditioning procedure, using the method of constant stimuli. Thresholds were measured by the criterion of a 50% correct response and a d of 1.5 for intra- and interspecific comparison, respectively. The best frequency of both species was 2 kHz, the hawk being 6.5 dB SPL more sensitive than the tit. Although the high-frequency cutoff was very similar in both species, at 8 kHz the great tit was about 30 dB more sensitive than the sparrowhawk. The hearing abilities of the prey and its predator are discussed with reference to the acoustic alarm communication of great tits confronted with sparrowhawks. Two alarm calls lie in the frequency range of the best hearing of both the hawk and the tits: the mobbing call and a call given in response to a nearby hawk when fleeing from it. In contrast, the seeet call, an alarm call given mainly in response to distant flying sparrowhawks, can only be heard well by the tit. The implications of these results for hypotheses concerning the evolution of alarm calls in small songbirds are discussed.  相似文献

The acorn barnacle Chthamalus montagui can present strong variation in shell morphology, ranging from flat conic to a highly bent form, caused by a substantial overgrowth of the rostrum plate. Shell shape distribution was investigated between January and May 2004 from geographical to microhabitat spatial scales along the western coast of Britain. Populations studied in the north (Scotland and Isle of Man) showed a higher degree of shell variation compared to those in the south (Wales and south-west England). In the north, C. montagui living at lower tidal levels and in proximity to the predatory dogwhelk, Nucella lapillus, were more bent in profile. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine behavioural responses, and vulnerability of bent and conic barnacles to predation by N. lapillus. Dogwhelks did not attack one morphotype more than the other, but only 15 % of attacks on bent forms were successful compared to 75 % in conic forms. Dogwhelk effluent reduced the time spent feeding by C. montagui (11 %), but there was no significant difference between conic and bent forms. Examination of barnacle morphology indicated a trade-off in investment in shell structure and feeding appendages associated with being bent, but none with egg or somatic tissue mass. These results are consistent with C. montagui showing an induced defence comparable to that found in its congeners Chthamalus anisopoma and Chthamalus fissus on the Pacific coast of North America, but further work to demonstrate inducibility is required.  相似文献

Panulirus penicillatus (Olivier, 1791) (Decapoda: Palinuridae) is the most common spiny lobster in the Red Sea and is widely distributed in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Lobsters (n=377) were collected on four occasions during 1986 on the coral reef at Dahab, Sinai, Egypt. Average size of the collected individuals was 70.5±24.6 mm carapace length (CL) for males and 63.2±15.9 mm CL for females. The sex ratio was 1:1.64 males to females. Length increment per molt was inversely correlated with size and ranged from 2.1 mm per molt in the 40 to 50 mm CL size class to less than 1 mm in the 60 to 70 mm CL size class. Average intermolt period was ca. 136 d for all size classes. The relationship between carapace length and body weight was expressed by the equation:W b=6.43 × 10–4 × (CL)2.89.P. penicillatus from Dahab differ in size, sex ratio and growth rate compared to other palinurid populations throughout their range. This might represent the effect of isolation and location at the edge of the geographical range for this species. It may also indicate an adaptation to their unique habitat in the coral reef in comparison to other palinurid species.  相似文献

In many marine invertebrate species, larval development plays an important role in population connectivity and gene flow: species with direct benthic development generally show more genetic structure than those with planktonic development. We used nuclear markers (microsatellites) to determine population genetic structure of the direct-developing snail Crepidula convexa (Gastropoda: Calyptraeidae) in seven populations with 15–85 individuals each within its native range of the northwest Atlantic and compared it to Crepidula fornicata, a congener with planktonic development. Our results are consistent with general expectations and previous work in these species with other markers: C. convexa had greater population structure and even at a regional scale shows significant isolation-by-distance, in contrast to C. fornicata. We also genotyped a single population of C. convexa introduced to the northeastern Pacific to investigate the prediction of reduced genetic diversity following introduction (founder effect). We did not find a reduction in genetic diversity, suggesting that this non-native population may be characterized by multiple introductions. This pattern is consistent with many other introduced populations of marine invertebrates, including C. fornicata.  相似文献

In the present paper we propose a modification of a basic eco-epidemiological model by incorporating predator switching among susceptible and infected prey population. A local and global study of the basic model is performed around the disease-free boundary equilibrium and the interior equilibrium to estimate important parameter thresholds that control disease eradication and species coexistence. Next we analyze the switching model from the same perspective in order to elucidate the role of switching on disease dynamics. Numerical simulations are carried out to justify analytical results.  相似文献

The distribution and composition of suspended particulate matter in the sea is very complex and not well understood. In this study, 3 different approaches were used to estimate the quantity and quality of suspended particulate matter in 34 samples from the euphotic zone of 9 stations in the Gulf of California. The results from electronic, microscopic and chemical analyses showed that most parameters measured were significantly correlated, e.g. the total particulate volume from particles of 2 to 150 diameter, as obtained from the Coulter Counter, proved to be significantly related to such parameters as seston, particulate nitrogen, particulate carbon, phytoplankton carbon and chlorophylla. It can be concluded from this study that the Coulter Counter can be a very useful instrument to determine, with little effort, the size, distribution, and volume of particulate suspended matter in the sea. These data can then be used to calculate some important biological parameters which are necessary to establish meaningful models of phytoplankton production. More detailed studies are necessary to prove the above mentioned relationships in depth, space and time.Contribution from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. Historical documents and classic works together with recent specialized literature have described Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Gulf of California. This is a review of HABs impact (qualitative and quantitative) during the last decades in the Gulf of California on wild (mammals, birds, fishes, and invertebrates) and cultured animals (shrimps and fishes). Microalgal species responsible of noxious effects are Noctiluca scintillans, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gymnodinium catenatum, Prorocentrum minimum, Akashiwo sanguinea, Chattonella subsalsa Ch. marina, Chattonella sp., Heterocapsa sp., Dinophysis sp., Fibrocapsa japonica, Heterosigma akashiwo, Thalassiosira sp., Chaetoceros spp., Pseudo-nitzschia australis, P fraudulenta, Pseudo-nitzschia sp., Trichodesmium erythraeum and ScSchizotrix calcicola. Emphasis is given to the necessity to continue with interdisciplinary studies in oceanography, ecology, toxicology and toxinology interrelated with biomedical sciences such as physiology, pathology, epidemiology and animal health.  相似文献

Because the (st)age structure of a population may rarely be stable, studies of transient population dynamics and population momentum are becoming ever more popular. Yet, studies of "population momentum" are restricted in the sense that they describe the inertia of population size resulting from a demographic transition to the stationary population growth rate. Although rarely mentioned, inertia in population size is a general phenomenon and can be produced by any demographic transition or perturbation. Because population size is of central importance in demography, conservation, and management, formulas relating the sensitivity of population inertia to changes in underlying vital rates and population structure could provide much-needed insight into the dynamics of populations with unstable (st)age structure. Here, we derive such formulas, which are readily computable, and provide examples of their potential use in studies of life history and applied arenas of population study.  相似文献

Tetraclita squamosa and Tetraclita japonica are common, intertidal barnacles. In Hong Kong, the population dynamics of the two species exhibited spatial and temporal variation on two semi-exposed shores. T. squamosa produced egg masses from May–June and annual settlement and recruitment occurred from June–July. In contrast, settlement and recruitment of T. japonica was sparse from March–May, but intensified in July–October. Mature gonads and egg masses were, however, only present from September–November, suggesting the larvae from the two settlement pulses originated from other locations as well as Hong Kong populations. Settlement intensity and post-recruitment mortality of the two species varied between sites, possibly due to spatial variation in free rock space, physical transport of larvae and abundance of food in the water column.Communicated by T. Variable ocean conditions can greatly impact prey assemblages and predator foraging in marine ecosystems. Our goal was to better understand how a change in ocean conditions influenced dietary niche overlap among a suite of midtrophic-level predators. We examined the diets of three fishes and one seabird off central Oregon during two boreal summer upwelling periods with contrasting El Niño (2010) and La Niña (2011) conditions. We found greater niche specialization during El Niño and increased niche overlap during La Niña in both the nekton and micronekton diet components, especially in the larger, more offshore predators. However, only the two smaller, more nearshore predators exhibited interannual variation in diet composition. Concurrent trawl surveys confirmed that changes in components of predator diets reflected changes in the prey community. Using multiple predators across diverse taxa and life histories provided a comprehensive understanding of food-web dynamics during changing ocean conditions.  相似文献

Allelic variation at eight nuclear-encoded microsatellites was assayed among 967 red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) sampled from four consecutive cohorts at seven geographic localities (=28 samples total) in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf). Number of alleles per microsatellite ranged from 6 to 21; average direct-count heterozygosity values per sample (-SE) ranged from 0.560ǂ.018 to 0.903ǂ.009. Tests of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium revealed significant departures from expected genotype proportions at one microsatellite, which was omitted from further analysis. Tests of genotypic equilibrium indicated that genotypes between pairs of microsatellites were randomly associated. Homogeneity tests of allele distributions across cohorts within localities were non-significant following correction for multiple tests executed simultaneously, and results from molecular analysis of variance indicated that the genetic variance component attributable to variation among cohorts did not differ significantly from zero. Homogeneity tests of allele distributions among localities (cohorts pooled) revealed significant differences both before and after correction for multiple tests. Neighbor-joining clustering of a pairwise matrix of Š values (an unbiased estimator of FST), spatial autocorrelations, and regression analysis revealed a pattern of isolation by distance, where genetic divergence among geographic samples increases with geographic distance between sample localities. The pattern and degree of temporal and spatial divergence in the nuclear-encoded microsatellites paralleled almost exactly those of mitochondrial (mt) DNA, as determined in a prior study. Stability of both microsatellite and mtDNA allele distributions within localities indicates that the small but significant genetic divergence among geographic samples represents true signal and that overlapping populations of red drum in the northern Gulf may be influenced by independent population dynamics. The degree of genetic divergence in microsatellites and mtDNA is virtually identical, indicating that genetic effective size of microsatellites and mtDNA in red drum are the same. This, in turn, suggests either that gene flow in red drum in the northern Gulf could be biased sexually or that red drum populations may not be in equilibrium between genetic drift and migration. If a sexual bias exists, the observation that divergence in mtDNA is considerably less than 4 times that of microsatellites could suggest female-mediated dispersal and/or male philopatry. The observed isolation-by-distance effect indicates a practical limit to dispersal. Approximate estimates of geographic neighborhood size suggest the limit is in the range 700-900 km. Although the genetic studies of red drum indicate significant genetic divergence across the northern Gulf, the genetic differences do not delimit specific populations or stocks with fixed geographic boundaries.  相似文献

Escape latency theory models the tradeoff between maintaining crypsis by remaining immobile near an immobile predator versus moving to flee or engage in fitness-enhancing activities. The model predicts that latency to flee increases as cost of fleeing increases and decreases as cost of remaining immobile increases. As predation risk increases, cost of fleeing, primarily due to abandoning crypsis due to immobility, decreases. Predictions have been tested for few risks and a single cost of immobility factor in only two species of active foragers. To gauge the breadth of applicability of the model, we tested effects of four risk factors and two cost of immobility factors in ambush-foraging phrynosomatid lizards, which we selected for testing because foraging mode strongly affects many aspects of ecology and behavior of lizards. Latency to flee decreased as standing distance (predator–prey distance before fleeing) decreased, predator approach speed increased, directness of approach increased, and predator persistence increased. Latency to move was shorter in the presence of food and shorter for males in the presence of females. Lizards often moved toward food or females instead of fleeing. Latency was affected as predicted by all risk and by cost of remaining immobile factors. Our findings agree with previous results for the same four risk factors and the foraging cost of immobility. That social cost of immobility affects latency as predicted is a novel finding. The model is robust, applying to ecologically diverse prey and to a wide range of factors affecting costs of fleeing and of immobility.  相似文献
