Transaction Costs Economics of Irreplaceability: <Emphasis Type="Italic">ex ante</Emphasis> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">ex post</Emphasis> Evaluation of Conservation Networks’ Vulnerability to Environmental Shocks

The theoretical concept, “asset specificity,” is applied to real data in the context of Danish nature conservation network planning in order to produce illustrative examples of an economic measure of the network’s vulnerability to exogenous shocks to the species composition. Three different measures of asset specificity are quantified from the shadow value of eliminating a key species from the individual grid cells. This represents a novel approach and a different interpretation of the term, as it is conventionally used as a qualitative indicator in the transaction cost economics literature. Apart from supplementing existing cost measures with an indicator of risk associated with investments in protected areas, this study demonstrates how the estimation and interpretation of various asset specificity measures for geographical areas may qualify policy makers’ choice of policy instrument in conservation planning. This differs from the more intuitive approach of basing policy instrument choice solely on the rarity of the species in a given area.

田亮:"阳光王子"的"环保"微笑

秦皇岛:观鸟的"麦加"

我国第一个鸟类自然保护区--北戴河沿海湿地,在迎来候鸟迁徙高峰的同时,也迎来了世界各地众多的观鸟爱好者。据了解,我国鸟类共计1200多种,而在北戴河就发现了20个目61个科的416种,占我国鸟类总数的1/3。其中属国家重点保护动物有68种,还有不少世界著名珍禽,如黑嘴鸥、白鹤、遗鸥、丹顶鹤等,也因此,这里被中外观鸟爱好者誉为"观鸟的麦加";国家在此设立了国家鸟类环志中心、野生动物救护中心。

节约闹革命:"旧曲新唱"

当今中国媒体,最为窜红,人气指数最高的“明星”既不是港台歌星周杰伦,也不是国际大牌影星章子怡,而是我们耳闻目睹最多、与我们随影相形的平凡“人士”——“节约”。中国有句老话叫触景生情,这使我们很容易联想到上个世纪六七十年代。那时中国经济可谓风雨飘摇,困难重重,当时有一个口号非常流行——叫“节约闹革命”。此外,由于经济短缺,催生了具有中国特色的各种票证:布票、油票、糖票、工业卷等等,当然也出现了特权阶层才能享受的特别供应卡。那时的人们确实“节约”,一件衣服老大穿完老二穿,老二穿完还有老三、老四等“接班人”在等待,…     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">Laudato sì</Emphasis> and the New Paradigm of Catholic Environmental Ethics: Reflections on Environmentalist Movements in Italy

This article explores certain aspects related to the environmental ethical message in the Encyclical Letter Laudato si, written in 2015 by Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, and compares them to recent Green party political movements in Italy. Italy offers a unique case study in that the religious background of the country acts as an independent variable with respect to the social acceptance of current environmental issues. The ethical message in Laudato sì is compared to recent debates on the moral responsibility of the individual and/or institution towards environmental problems; a range of responsibilities assumed by institutions versus individuals with regards to environmental problems are analyzed. In conclusion, parallels are made between the abovementioned ethical debate and the ethical contents of the Encyclical Letter.
