There is genetic variation in the female mating rate in the green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi), and females benefit from male ejaculates that contain both sperm and accessory gland substances. Although polyandry corresponds to higher lifetime fecundity than monandry, some females abstain from remating irrespective of the number of available mates. Explaining genetic variation in mating rates requires that monandrous females perform better than polyandrous ones under some conditions. We experimentally explored the reproductive performance of females either with a low or high intrinsic mating rate by allowing them to mate, feed, and lay eggs freely in a laboratory. Individual females followed different life histories: during the early days of reproduction, females with a low mating rate produced more eggs than females with a high mating rate. Hence, refraining from the benefits of multiple mating may be beneficial, if the time for reproduction is limited, or other female traits associated with polyandry are traded off against longevity. Given the day length of 10 h, a model shows that even if polyandrous females enjoy higher lifetime reproductive success, changeable and unpredictable weather will favor monandry if each period of suitable weather lasts, on average, less than 5 days. Thus, a combination of life history cost and unpredictability of fitness may explain the maintenance of monandry in the wild. Our results are also consistent with the observation that frequency of monandry increases with latitude.  相似文献

Summary Among butterflies where females are polygamous, interactions with males after the first mating entail time costs associated with both courtship and mating. In the green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, spermatophore counts on wild-caught females revealed that the average number of matings that females had performed increased gradually from 1.1 during the first week of the flight period to 2.4 during the 4th and final week. By dissecting pairs found in copula in the field, we found that female rematings occurred solely in the afternoon, whereas virgin females mated most frequently earlier in the day. We suggest that non-virgin females minimize the time cost of rematings by allocating them to an hour when the egglaying frequency has decreased to a low level. Virgin females were very attractive to males, judging by their courtship persistence (several minutes), but when mated, females became so unattractive that courting males left them within a few seconds. However, females' attractiveness increased again with time elapsed since the last mating. These observations support the idea that females emit repellent pheromones after mating, which may be male derived. Since newly mated females were not harassed by males or hindered in their egglaying activities, it is conceivable that the time cost of remating may be outweighed by the benefit of the regained ability to curtail male courtship. This advantage to newly remated females may in itself be an explanation for polyandry in P. napi and is alternative or complementary to the idea that females that remate receive a material benefit that can be used to increase their realized fecundity.  相似文献

Summary Individual Coenonympha pamphilus males shifted mate locating behaviour depending on temperature. Under low temperature conditions males competed for territories, resulting in a high proportion of potential territories being occupied by stationary males and in long interactions between males in teritories. When temperatures became higher, stationary males tended to leave their territories and travel over a wider area, i.e. become vagrant. This resulted in a low proportion of territories being occupied by stationary males and inshort territorial interactions. Males could stay longer in flight without perching and hence also search a larger area for females within a given time span with increasing temperatures. This may explain why males adopt vagrant behaviour at higher temperatures. Al lower temperatures, on the other hand, when males cannot search effectively for females, waiting for them at a defended territory should be the most successful strategy.  相似文献

A nutrient solution experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Fe and Zn supply on Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn concentrations in wheat plants. The experiment used a factorial combination of two Fe levels (0 and 5 mg l(-1)) and three Zn levels (0, 0.1 and 10 mg I(-1)). The supply of Fe (5 mg l(-1)) and Zn (0.1 mg l(-1)) increased plant dry weight and leaf chlorophyll content compared to the Fe or Zn deficient (0 mg 11) treatments. However, excess Zn supply (10 mg l(-1)) reduced plant dry weights and leaf chlorophyll content. Iron supply (5 mg l(-1)) reduced wheat Zn concentrations by 49%, Cu concentrations by 34%, and Mn by 56% respectively. Zinc supply (10 mg l(-1)) reduced wheat Fe concentrations by an average of 8%, but had no significant effect on Cu and Mn concentrations. Stepwise regression analyses indicated that Zn, Cu, and Mn concentrations were negatively correlated with root- and leaf-Fe concentrations, but positively correlated with stem-Fe concentrations. Leaf-Mn concentrations were negatively correlated with root-, stem- and leaf-Zn concentrations.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory studies using albino house mice, a female's prior intrauterine position can affect many postnatal physiological, morphological and behavioral characteristics. Females flanked by males in utero (2M females) exhibit more aggressive dominance than females flanked by females (OM females). Thus, wild 2M females may be most successful during peak population densities when their aggressive nature would allow them to displace other females from limited resources. 2M and 0M females and males delivered by cesarean section were individually marked and released as young adults on two occasions onto a highway island (the area enclosed by exit and entrance ramps at an interchange) to determine whether 2 M females have a competitive advantage over 0 M females in the field. Males were included to create realistic population structure; their intrauterine position was not a treatment. Feeding stations afforded individuals an opportunity to exhibit their dominance by maintaining home-ranges at or near the stations. The populations were monitored by periodic live-trapping and reproductive success was determined using field body weights and by post-mortem examination for uterine implantation scars. Survival and capture rates were estimated, using a modified Jolly-Seber markrecapture program, for each of four intervals between trapping occasions over the course of 7 weeks. There were no overall differences in survivorship between 2M and 0M females, neither type of female was caught more frequently at feeding stations and they did not differ in measures of reproductive success. However, 2M females had significantly larger home-range sizes than 0M females and thus space use may be a trait masculinized by prior intrauterine position. Although there are a number of life-history characteristics that differ between 0M and 2M females in the laboratory that we did not test specifically in the field, our findings and other features of wild house mouse biology suggest that prior intrauterine position does not have a strong effect on survival and reproduction in the wild.

Seasonal cycle in energy content of gonad, perivisceral fat, liver, and muscle was used to estimate the energy cost of spawning of female red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) from Buenos Aires coasts, Argentina. Spawning was observed primarily between November and January, although a low-intensity spawning was also observed at the beginning of this period. The energy required for gonad development of female red porgy (the difference between the maximum and minimum energy content of ovaries along the year) was 2,652 J g−1 dry weight or 558 kJ. Female red porgy expend 22.8% of their total body energy (3,481 kJ) during the spawning period. Of this energy, relative contributions from different sources were as follows: ovaries 62.5% (496 kJ), perivisceral fat 17.8% (142 kJ), liver 10.3% (82 kJ), and muscles 9.4% (75 kJ). Female spawners lost about 7.2% (119 g) of their total body weight (1,654 g) in the spawning period. From the 7.2% of the total weight lost, female gonad represented a relative reduction of 73.8% (87.6 g), the perivisceral fat declined by 5.7% (6.8 g), the liver declined by 10.6% (12.5 g), and muscle tissue exhibited a 10% loss in total weight (11.9 g). Reproductive effort represented 7.6% of food energy, while resting metabolism accounted for almost 38% of food energy. Despite the fact that red porgy females feed throughout the entire spawning period, it is shown that between pre-spawning (September, water temperature 15°C) and mid-spawning (December, water temperature 19°C) they lost 45 and 38% of their muscle and liver lipids, respectively, and 89% of the perivisceral fat associated with the gut and body cavity. Red porgy used both their energy reserves and food energy during ovarian maturation. This asynchronous species have a strategy of a lower energy allocation and a higher dependence of food during the spawning time (late-spring and summer) for successful reproduction.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of five adult wheatears (Oe. oenanthe) delivering prey (maggots and mealworms) from artificial patches to the nestlings was studied. The existence of a so-called loading effect was confirmed. Handling times for subsequent prey items increased with the number held in the beak, which led to a decrease in collecting rates with patch time and, in most cases, to positively accelerating loading functions when collecting times for prey items are plotted as a function of load size. All birds seemed to become more efficient at loading prey in the experimental patches during the course of the nestling period. Loading functions for maggots and mealworms were slightly different. When forcing the birds to visit several cups (only one item in each cup) and remove a layer of moss before reaching the prey (low-density patches), all birds took fewer prey and two of them stayed longer in them than in highdensity patches (one cup filled with prey items). This was due to an increase in search times with the number of prey held in the beak. From knowledge of the loading functions and travel times to the nest, it is possible to predict the optimal load sizes according to a mathematical solution of the delivery rate model of Orians and Pearson (1979). By transforming collecting and travel times to energy expenditures, it is also possible to derive predictions from an energy efficiency model (maximizing energy delivery per unit energy expended in a round-trip). The observed average load sizes did not differ significantly from those predicted by the delivery rate model, but they were significantly smaller in all cases than those predicted by the energy efficiency model. For birds feeding nestlings, it may be more important to sacrifice efficiency in energy expenditure in favour of greater delivery rates, thereby maximizing the growth rate of the young.  相似文献

When petroleum hydrocarbons contaminate soil, the carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio of the soil is altered. The added carbon stimulates microbial numbers but causes an imbalance in the C:N ratio which may result in immobilization of soil nitrogen by the microbial biomass, leaving none available for plant growth. As members of Leguminosae fix atmospheric nitrogen to produce their own nitrogen for growth, they may prove more successful at growing on petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sites. During a wider study on phytoremediation of diesel fuel contaminated soil, particular attention was given to the performance of legumes versus other plant species. During harvesting of pot experiments containing leguminous plants, a recurring difference in the number and formation of root nodules present on control and contaminated Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) plants was observed. The total number of nodules per plant was significantly reduced in contaminated plants compared to control plants but nodules on contaminated plants were more developed than corresponding nodules on control plants. Plant performance of Common vetch and Westerwold's ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) was compared to illustrate any difference between the ability of legumes and grasses to grow on diesel fuel contaminated soil. Common vetch was less affected by diesel fuel and performed better in low levels of diesel fuel contaminated soil than Westerwolds ryegrass. The total amount of diesel fuel remaining after 4 months in Common vetch planted soil was slightly less than in Westerwolds ryegrass planted soil.  相似文献

The growing molecular evidence that females of many species mate with several males calls for a critical reassessment of the selective forces which act to shape female mating tactics. In natural populations of the harlequin-beetle-riding pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides, females are polyandrous and typically produce mixed-paternity broods. Laboratory behavioral analyses and breeding experiments indicate that polyandry in this pseudoscorpion is an active strategy which increases female reproductive success. Females restricted to mating with a single male experienced a higher rate of embryo failure and produced significantly fewer offspring than either females mated to more than one male in the laboratory or females naturally inseminated in the field. Forced copulation, insufficient sperm from a single mating, male nutrient donations and variation in inherent male genetic quality cannot explain the greater number of nymphs hatched by polyandrous females in this study. Evidence suggests that, by mating with several males, C. scorpioides females may exploit postcopulatory mechanisms for reducing the risk and/or cost of embryo failure resulting from fertilization by genetically incompatible sperm. The dissipation pattern of the chlorophenoxy herbicides (2,4‐D and 2,4,5‐T) residues in sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) has been studied along with its effect on the changes of plant pigments (chlorophyll‐a,b, total chlorophyll, carotene and anthocyanin), sugar and starch in different parts of the plant. The residues of 2,4‐D and 2,4,5‐T remained for larger period of time (10 days) at higher concentrations than the lower concentration. The concentrations of chlorophylls and carotene were found to be reduced with the application of both 2,4‐D and 2,4,5‐T. But the chlorophyll concentrations were slowly normalized accompanied with the reduction of the herbicide residues. For anthocyanin, there was no significant effect. In case of carbohydrate, the sugar concentration was found to be raised by all doses in leaf and stem. The change in starch content in different plant parts did not follow an uniform pattern at different doses of herbicides.  相似文献

In an experiment, application of different levels of metalaxyl to a sandy loam soil significantly affected the nodulation and nitrogenase activity of mungbean. In both the compost amended and unamended soils, 0.5 mg kg(-1) of metalaxyl enhanced acetylene reduction activity and yield of mungbean, where as higher concentrations (1 mg and 2.5 mg kg(-1) of fungicide) inhibited the nodulation traits as well as economic traits of mungbean.  相似文献

Numerous studies have focused on whether organisms can signal or perceive pheromones and use chemical signals in species and mate recognition. Recently, there have been an increasing number of studies investigating whether pheromones are used in mate choice. Yet, little attention has been paid in exploring the effects of pheromone-based mate choice on reproductive investment. We first tested this hypothesis by providing virgin Scytodes sp. females with a choice between two virgin males in the presence of chemical signals alone and found strong evidence of an odor-based mate preference. We then examined the consequences of the odor-based mate choice by allowing female Scytodes sp. that had previously made an odor-only mate choice to mate with preferred and non-preferred males, respectively. We measured the success of copulation, mortality of male, pre-oviposition interval, egg-sac weight, egg weight, fecundity, fertility, embryonic period, and size of offspring at hatching. Females that mated with the preferred males produced significantly heavier egg sacs that contained more and larger eggs with a greater fertility. Significantly more non-preferred males than preferred males were killed by spitting. However, pre-oviposition interval, embryonic period, and hatchling size were not affected by female mate choice. This study is the first to demonstrate that female spiders are able to regulate their highly valuable reproductive investment based solely on chemical signals.  相似文献

Summary Male wartbiters Decticus verrucivorus transfer elaborate spermatophores to females during copulation. The spermatophore is attached externally to the female's genitalia and consists of two parts: a large, gelatinous, sperm-free portion, the spermatophylax, eaten by the female after mating; and a sperm-containing ampulla, eaten after the spermatophylax has been consumed. Since females take longer to eat larger spermatophylaxes, the duration of ampulla attachment is positively correlated with spermatophylax size. Two series of experiments were carried out, one in which the size of the spermatophylax consumed by females and the duration of ampulla attachment were manipulated in concert and another in which they were manipulated independently. Some females were also maintained on a protein-free diet and either supplied with or deprived of spermatophylax material. The amount of protein in the diet, but not the amount of spermatophylax material consumed, influenced female longevity, lifetime fecundity, and egg weight. When females were deprived of the spermatophylax, an experimental increase in the duration of ampulla attachment induced longer periods of unreceptivity in females after mating, a more rapid onset of oviposition, and an increased oviposition rate. Consequently, the number of eggs laid by females during their nonreceptive refractory periods increased significantly with increasing duration of ampulla attachment up to 180 min; however, there was no significant increase in the number of eggs laid beyond 180 min of ampulla attachment. This closely corresponds to an ampulla attachment duration of 188 min expected when a male transfers a natural spermatophylax of mean size to the female. These results suggest that the amount of ejaculate transferred to the female, and not the amount of spermatophylax material per se, is the factor controlling female receptivity and oviposition behavior. Since we did not detect any effect of spermatophylax consumption on female fecundity or egg weight, we conclude that the spermatophylax of D. verrucivorus functions primarily as a sperm protection device rather than as a form of male parental investment.  相似文献

The use of higher dosage and repeated applications of conventional pesticides have led to the rapid development of insect resistance to pesticide and adverse effects on human health and environment. Accordingly, researchers are prompted to identify an alternative entomotoxic agent for crop protection. Nanocides are being considered as alternatives to conventional insecticides because they are expected to lessen the application rate and reduce the chances of resistance development in pests. In this study, we evaluated the entomotoxic effects of nanosilica on larvae of Plutella xylostella, in a laboratory by using dust spray, larva dipping, leaf dipping, and solution spray methods. Dust treatment showed a more highly significant effect than the other three treatments. The mortality percentage increased up to 58% and 85% at 24 and 72 h after treatment, respectively, when nanosilica was applied at a rate of 1 mg cm?2. In all four bioassays, mortality rate increased with both increased time after nanosilica exposure and increased concentration. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images showed that larval death was due to desiccation, body wall abrasion, and spiracle blockage. These results suggested that nanosilica can be an alternative to conventional pesticides if dust formulation would be properly used.  相似文献

Butterflies are conspicuous among animals that fight for mating opportunities because it is not clear how contest costs could accrue. Nevertheless, the bulk of research in this group suggests that contests are settled on the basis of asymmetries in fighting ability (the superior competitor hypothesis). There is also a consistent effect on contest escalation due to apparent 'confusion' over residency, which could result from resident butterflies playing different tactics than non-residents, or from a causal link between residency and fighting ability. I addressed these hypotheses by studying contest behavior in the crepuscular species Melanitis leda (L.) (Nymphalidae) over a 5-month period in tropical Australia. Males competed via conspicuous two-stage maneuvers of a form unique among butterflies. Prior residents won 77% of all contests. Non-resident males arrived and perched in occupied sites until challenged by incumbent residents, and the aggressiveness of these interlopers increased as a function of the time before they were detected. Contest winners also tended to be younger than losers, and contest escalation was negatively related to both the age of the losing male and the magnitude of the between-combatant age asymmetry. These results are consistent with the superior competitor hypothesis based upon age as a determinant (or correlate) of fighting ability, but also suggest residency has a unique influence on contest behavior. Further research is clearly required to unravel the effects of age, residency and other potential biophysical determinants of fighting ability in this species.  相似文献
