Soil and groundwater contamination due to petroleum hydrocarbon spills is a frequent problem worldwide. In Mexico, even when programs oriented to the diminution of these undesirable events exist, in 2000, a total of 1,518 petroleum spills were reported. Exploration zones, refineries, and oil distribution and storage stations frequently are contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH); diesel fraction; gasoline fraction; benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX); and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Among the many methodologies available for the treatment of this kind of contaminated soil, bioremediation is the most favorable, because it is an efficient/low‐cost option that is environmentally friendly. This article discusses the capability of using a biopile to treat soils contaminated with about 40,000 mg/kg of TPH. Design and operation of a 27‐m3 biopile is described in this work, including microbiological and respirometric aspects. Parameters such as TPH, diesel fraction, BTEX, and PAHs considered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were measured in biopile samples at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 22 weeks. A final average TPH concentration of 7,300 mg/kg was achieved in 22 weeks, a removal efficiency of 80 percent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

This article demonstrates the applicability of in situ flushing for the remediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons at a Mexican refinery. The initial average total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration for the demonstration field test was 55,156 g/kg. After six weeks of in situ flushing with alternate periods of water and water/surfactant, an average concentration of 1,407 mg/kg was reached, achieving a total removal efficiency of 98 percent. At the end of the process, no hydrocarbons such as diesel; gasoline; benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene (BTEX); or petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found. Iron washing achieved a removal efficiency of 70 percent, and for vanadium, the removal efficiency was 94.4 percent. The volume of soil treated was 41.6 m3 (38 m2), equivalent to 69.5 tons of soil. A rough calculation of the process costs estimated a total cost of $104.20/m3 ($114.00/m2). Our research indicates that there are a few studies demonstrating in situ flushing experiences under field conditions where both organic (TPH, diesel, gasoline, PAHs, BTEX) and metal (iron and vanadium) removals are reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Petroleum oil is a major driver of worldwide economic activity, but it has also created contamination problems during the storage and refining process. Also, unconventional resources are natural resources, which require greater than industry‐standard levels of technology or investment to exploit. In the case of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, additional technology, energy, and capital have to be applied to extract the gas or oil. Bioremediation of petroleum spill is considered of great importance due to the contaminating effects on human health and the environment. For this reason, it is important to reduce total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in contaminated soil. In addition, biosurfactant production is a desirable property of hydrocarbon‐degrading microorganisms. Seven strains belonging to Lysinibacillus sphaericus and Geobacillus sp were selected to evaluate their ability to biodegrade TPH in the presence of toxic metals, their potential to produce biosurfactants, and their ability to improve the biodegradation rate. The seven bacterial strains examined in this study were able to utilize crude petroleum‐oil hydrocarbons as the sole source of carbon and energy. In addition, their ability to degrade crude oil was not affected by the presence of toxic metals such as chromium and arsenic. At the same time, the strains were able to reduce toxic metals concentration through biosorption processes. Biosurfactant production was determined using the drop‐collapsed method for all strains, and they were characterized as both anionic and cationic biosurfactants. Biosurfactants showed an increase in biodegradation efficiency both in liquid minimal salt medium and landfarming treatments. The final results in field tests showed an efficiency of 93 percent reduction in crude oil concentration by the selected consortium compared to soil without consortium. The authors propose L. sphaericus and Geobacillus sp consortium as an optimum treatment for contaminated soils. In addition, production of biosurfactants could have an application in the extraction of crude oil from unconventional hydrocarbon resources. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A pilot field study evaluated whether adding solid peroxygen materials during land treatment could cost effectively accelerate cleanup at a site contaminated with petroleum-related compounds. Five test cells were constructed containing approximately five cubic yards of soil contaminated with 300–400 mg/kg of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). Three cells received treatment with solid peroxygen materials (either MgO2 or CaO2), while the other two cells served as controls (no peroxygen amendment). Adding solid peroxygen compounds effectively reduced the hydrocarbon contamination in the soils and decreased the treatment time. During this time, the concentration of TPH in soil in the three treatment cells decreased. In contrast, there was little loss of TPH from the two control cells simulating traditional land treatment. Adding the solid peroxygen materials reduced the total site remediation time, thereby reducing the overall costs.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the world's most significant environmental organic contaminants because of their carcinogenic properties. PAHs are widely distributed globally as a result of releases from numerous natural and anthropogenic activities. Consequently, several PAH monitoring studies have been conducted and remediation approaches explored. This article aims to provide the current status of PAH distribution in Nigeria's oil and gas industrial region in relation to the technologies adopted for PAH remediation. Ideally, the findings will provide insight into the challenges in managing organic contaminants derived from petroleum exploration activities in developing countries with Nigeria as a case study.  相似文献

Bench‐scale solvent extraction and soil washing studies were performed on soil samples obtained from three abandoned wood preserving sites included in the National Priority List. The soil samples from these sites were contaminated with high levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pentachlorophenol (PCP), dioxins, and heavy metals. The effectiveness of the solvent extraction process was assessed using liquefied propane or dimethyl ether as solvents over a range of operating conditions. These studies have demonstrated that a two‐stage solvent extraction process using dimethyl ether as a solvent at a ratio of 1.61 per kg of soil could decrease dioxin levels in the soil by 93.0 to 98.9 percent, and PCP levels by 95.1 percent. Reduction percentages for benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) potency estimate and total detected PAHs were 82.4 and 98.6 percent, respectively. Metals concentrations were not reduced by the solvent extraction treatment. These removal levels could be significantly improved using a multistage extraction system. Commercial scale solvent extraction using liquefied gases costs about $220 per ton of contaminated soil. However, field application of this technology at the United Creosote site, Conroe, Texas, failed to perform to the level observed at bench scale due to the excessive foaming and air emission problem. Soil washing using surfactant solution and wet screening treatability studies were also performed on the soil samples in order to assess remediation strategies for sites. Although aqueous phase solubility of contaminants seemed to be the most important factor affecting removal of contaminants from soil, surfactant solutions (3 percent by weight) having nonionic surfactants with hydrophile‐lipophile balance (HLB) of about 14 (Makon‐12 and Igepal CA 720) reduced the PAH levels by an average of 71 percent, compared to no measurable change when pure deionized water was used. Large fractioza of clay and silt (<0.06mm), high le!ezielsof orgaizic contami‐ nants and hzimic acid can makesoil washing less applicable.  相似文献

Traditional bioremediation approaches have been used to treat petroleum source contamination in readily accessible soils and sludges. Contamination under existing structures is a greater challenge. Options to deal with this problem have usually been in the extreme (i.e., to dismantle the facility and excavate to an acceptable regulated residual, or to pump and treat for an inordinately long period of time). The excavated material must be further remediated and cleanfill must be added to close the excavation. If site assessments were too conservative or incomplete, new contamination adulterating fill soils may result in additional excavation at some later date. Innovative, cost-efficient technologies must be developed to remove preexisting wastes under structures and to reduce future remediation episodes. An innovative soil bioremediation treatment method was developed and evaluated in petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated (PHC) soils at compressor stations of a natural gas pipeline running through Louisiana. The in-situ protocol was developed for remediating significant acreage subjected to contamination by petroleum-based lubricants and other PHC products resulting from a chronic leakage of lubricating oil used to maintain the pipeline itself. Initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) measurements revealed values of up to 12,000 mg/kg soil dry weight. The aim of the remediation project was to reduce TPH concentration in the contaminated soils to a level of <200 mg/kg soil dry weight, a level negotiated to be acceptable to state and federal regulators. After monitoring the system for 122 days, all sites showed greater than 99-percent reduction in TPH concentration.  相似文献

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Environmental Technology Laboratory is conducting ongoing research into the effectiveness of a biosurfactant, PES-51®, in removing weathered crude oil from beach material. A field test was conducted from 1 to 7 July 1993 in Sleepy Bay on La Touche Island in Prince William Sound. The results of chemical analysis of the beach material before and after treatment show that diesel range petroleum hydrocarbons are completely removed to levels below the detection limit of 0.5 mg kg−1. Semivolatile petroleum hydrocarbons were reduced an average of 70%. The microbial data collected indicate that no inhibition of microbial activity in sediments is caused by treatment. The numbers and activity of hydrocarbon-degrading organisms were enhanced immediately following treatment and for about a month afterwards. There was no evidence of dissolved hydrocarbons or increased microbiological activity in seawater samples, providing evidence that oil was not transported offshore during the treatment process.  相似文献

Land treatment facilities can provide effective treatment of secondary oily wastewater from maintenance operations, particularly in arid climates. Soil and underlying groundwater from a land treatment facility, which has been operating for eight years, were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of using bioremediation for the treatment of dissolved and free‐phase oil in maintenance wastewater. The study was conducted at a mining site in Western Australia. The facility was capable of treating 140 kiloliters (kL) of oily wastewater per day. The average petroleum hydrocarbon content of the wastewater was 2 percent weight per volume (w/v) based on data available for the first five years. The soil data indicate that the land treatment process has been operating efficiently even at high wastewater loadings with maximum degradation rates of 10–242 mg/kg per day. Based on the soil data, there is no evidence of accumulation of any metal or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds. The land treatment facility has led to only low levels of TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons) contamination (<4 ppm) in the underlying groundwater. However, nitrate concentrations in the groundwater were shown to increase over the first five years of the facility's operation. This article reports and discusses the operational data from the land treatment process, illustrating its effectiveness in treating oily wastewater. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The direct application of surfactants to petroleum-contaminated soil has been proposed as a mechanism to increase the bioavailability of insoluble compounds. Solubilization of hydrophobic compounds into the aqueous phase appears to be a significant rate limiting factor in petroleum biodegradation in soil. Nonionic surfactants have been developed to solubilize a variety of compounds, thus increasing the desorption of contaminants from the soil. In this study, laboratory scale land treatment scenarios were used to monitor the bioremediation of petroleum contaminated soils. In efforts to achieve the lowest levels of residual petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil following biotreatment, 0.5 and 1.0% (volume/weight) surfactant was blended into soils under treatment. Two soil types were studied, a high clay content soil and a sandy, silty soil. In both cases, the addition of surfactant (Adsee 799®, a blend of ethoxylated fatty acids, Witco Corporation) stimulated biological activity as indicated by increased heterotropbic colony forming units per gram of soil. However, the increased activity was not correlated with removal of petroleum hydrocarbons. The results suggest that the application of surfactants directly to the soil for the purpose of solubilizing hydropbobic compounds was not successful in achieving greater levels of petroleum hydrocarbon removal.  相似文献

Asphalt products, particularly sealants, are prepared using petroleum products that contain a com‐plex mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Clearly, these products are ubiquitous in urban environments, which raises an issue regard‐ing the potential for PAHs to be transported from parking lots to underlying or adjacent soil, surface‐water bodies, or groundwater. Based on a literature review, there are limited studies focus‐ing on this issue; however, the studies that have been published have fascinating conclusions. The literature shows, as expected, that asphalt‐based products contain PAHs. The highest PAH concen‐trations are present in asphalt sealants, particularly those manufactured using coal tar. Furthermore, due to the low solubility and high partition coefficients of PAHs, the potential for PAHs to leach from asphalt surfaces is negligible, which has been confirmed by leachability studies. Thus, there is little risk that PAHs will be present in stormwater runoff or leach into groundwater from asphalt‐paved areas in a dissolved form. However, asphalt pavement and sealants produce particulate matter that can contain concentrations of PAHs in the sub‐percent range (100s to 1,000s mg/kg total PAHs) that is transported in stormwater runoff. Some studies show that this can cause soil and sediment con‐tamination with total PAH concentrations in the range of 1 to 10 mg/kg. From a remediation per‐spective, many site cleanups are conducted to remediate the presence of PAHs to cleanup goals below 1 mg/kg or, in some cases, 0.1 mg/kg or lower. From a total risk perspective, remediating sites to low PAH cleanup goals may be unwarranted in light of the risk of transportable PAHs produced from paved parking surfaces. In other words, is it reasonable to conduct a cleanup to remediate low PAH concentrations and then redevelop the area with asphalt pavement and sealant, which may pose a greater PAH‐related risk? © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A comparison of several extraction methodologies for the analysis of base-neutral and acid organic contaminants (EPA priority pollutants) in municipal sludge was conducted. Sludge was spiked with selected contaminants and extracted wet and following air-drying by a variety of techniques such as dilution, centrifuge extraction, Soxhlet extraction and high speed mixing (PolytronR, WaringR and ultrasonic probe). All of the techniques produced variable rdsults. Recoveries of spiked compounds ranged from 0 to > 100% and, in general, the relative standard deviations ranged from 20 to 50%. Extraction of wet sludge using high speed mixing was considered to be the most satisfactory technique. Based on analyses of 15 municipal sludges derived mainly from industrial centres, it is suggested that agricultural utilization of Canadian sludges probably does not represent a significant organic contaminant hazard to the food chain. Organic contaminant concentrations in the sludges generally were < 10 mg kg−1 dw. Phthalate esters in several sludges and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Hamilton sludge exceeded 10 mg kg−1 dw; however, phthalate esters are readily degraded in soil and the Hamilton sludge is incinerated. “Acceptable” organic contaminant concentrations in sludges for use on pasture and arable lands are suggested. However, it is recommended that further analytical research be undertaken to develop more accurate and precise methods for measuring organic contaminants in municipal sludge and that an expanded program of sampling and analysis be undertaken to provide more reliable information concerning organic contaminant concentrations in Canadian sludges.  相似文献

A conceptual approach of a novel application of in‐situ thermal processes that would either use a steam injection process or a steam/surfactant injection process was considered to remediate petroleum contaminated sediment residing in an abandoned canal. Laboratory tests were conducted in an attempt to volatilize or mobilize contaminants of concern (selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]) from the contaminated sediment into a phase that could be physically removed. The processes were operated above ambient temperature and pressure in an attempt to increase the removal of the contaminants of concern from the sediment. The ability of both the steam injection process and the steam/surfactant process to remove PAHs from the sediment was considered ineffective; as only two of the seventeen selected PAHs (naphthalene and C1 naphthalene) were associated with a percentage mass reduction greater than 34% for both treatments (four trials). The steam/surfactant injection process generally resulted in higher reductions than the steam injection process, but had larger variances within the two trials using the treatment type. This preliminary evaluation suggests that steam‐based injection processes for removing petroleum contamination from this canal sediment, using the surfactants selected, equipment set‐up, and operating conditions studied, would be considered ineffective. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. *

This study was undertaken to evaluate in-situ soil bioremediation processes, including degradation and detoxification, for two types of wood preserving wastes and two types of petroleum refining wastes at high concentrations in an unacclimated soil. The soil solid phase, water soluble fractions of the soil, and column leachates were evaluated. Two bioassays, a mutagenic potential asay (Ames assay) and an aqueous toxicity assay (Microtox assay) were used to evaluate detoxification; high performance liquid chromatography was used to evaluate chemical concentration and degradation for eight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The group of non-carcinogenic PAHs studied demonstrated greater degradation, ranging from 54–90% of mass added for the four wastes; the carcinogenic group of PAHs studied exhibited degradation ranging from 24–53% of mass added. Although no mutagenicity was observed in waste/soil mixtures after one year of treatment, Microtox toxicity was observed in water soluble fractions and in leachate samples. An integration of information concerning degradation of hazardous constituents with bioassay information represents an approach for designing treatability studies and for evaluating the effectiveness of in-situ bioremediation of contaminated soil/waste systems. When combined with information from waste, site and soil characterization studies, the data generated in treatability studies may be used in predictive mathematical models to: (1) evaluate the effectiveness of use of on-site bioremediation for treatment of wastes in soil systems; (2) develop appropriate containment structures to prevent unacceptable waste transport from the treatment zone; and (3) design performance monitoring strategies.  相似文献

A pilot‐scale land treatment unit (LTU) was constructed at the former Guadalupe oil production field with the purpose of investigating the effect of co‐substrate addition on the bacterial community and the resulting rate and extent of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation. The TPH was a weathered mid‐cut distillate (C10‐C32) excavated from the subsurface and stockpiled before treatment. A control cell (Cell 1) in the LTU was amended with nitrogen and phosphorus while the experimental cell (Cell 2) was amended with additional complex co‐substrate—corn steep liquor. During the pilot LTU operation, measurements were taken of TPH, nutrients, moisture, aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB), and diesel oxidizing bacteria (DOB). The bacterial community was also assayed using community‐level physiology profiles (CLPP) and 16S rDNA terminal restriction fragment (TRF) analysis. TPH degradation in both cells was characterized by a rapid phase of degradation that lasted for the first three weeks, followed by a slower degradation phase that continued through the remainder of the project. The initial rate of TPH‐degradation in Cell 1 (?0.021 day?1) was slower than in Cell 2 (?0.035 day?1). During the slower phase, degradation rates in both cells were similar (?0.0026 and ?0.0024 respectively). AHB and DOB counts were similar in both cells during the fast degradation phase. A second addition of co‐substrate to Cell 2 at the beginning of the slow degradation phase resulted in an increased AHB population that lasted for the remainder of the project but did not affect TPH degradation rates. CLPP data showed that co‐substrate addition altered the functional capacity of the bacterial community during both phases of the project. However, TRF data indicated that the phylogenetic composition of the community was not different in the two cells during the fast degradation phase. The bacterial phylogenetic structure in Cell 2 differed from Cell 1 after the second application of co‐substrate, during the slow degradation phase. Thus, co‐substrate addition appeared to enhance the functional capacity of the bacterial community during the fast degradation phase when the majority of TPH was bioavailable, resulting in increased degradation rates, but did not affect rates during the slow degradation phase when the remaining TPH may not have been bioavailable. These data show that co‐substrate addition might prove most useful for applications such as land farming where TPH is regularly applied to the same soil and initial degradation rates are more important to the project goals. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
