One of the most serious externalities of agricultural activity relates to greenhouse gas emissions. This work tests this relationship for the Portuguese case by examining data compiled since 1961. Employing cointegration techniques and vector error correction models (VECMs), we conclude that the evolution of the most representative vegetables and fruits in Portuguese production are associated with higher controls on the evolution of greenhouse gas emissions. Reversely, the evolution of the output levels of livestock and the most representative animal production have significantly increased the level of CO2 (carbon dioxide) reported in Portugal. We also analyze the cycle length of the long-term relationship between agricultural activity and greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, we highlight the case of synthetic fertilizers, whose values of CO2 have quickly risen due to changes in Portuguese vegetables, fruit, and animal production levels.

In coastal Antarctica, freezing and thawing influence many physical, chemical and biological processes for ice-free tundra ecosystems, including the production of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this study, penguin guanos and ornithogenic soil cores were collected from four penguin colonies and one seal colony in coastal Antarctica, and experimentally subjected to three freezing–thawing cycles (FTCs) under ambient air and under N2. We investigated the effects of FTCs on the emissions of three GHGs including nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). The GHG emission rates were extremely low in frozen penguin guanos or ornithogenic soils. However, there was a fast increase in the emission rates of three GHGs following thawing. During FTCs, cumulative N2O emissions from ornithogenic soils were greatly higher than those from penguin guanos under ambient air or under N2. The highest N2O cumulative emission of 138.24 μg N2O–N kg?1 was observed from seal colony soils. Cumulative CO2 and CH4 emissions from penguin guanos were one to three orders of magnitude higher than those from ornithogenic soils. The highest cumulative CO2 (433.0 mgCO2–C kg?1) and CH4 (2.9 mgCH4–C kg?1) emissions occurred in emperor penguin guanos. Penguin guano was a stronger emitter for CH4 and CO2 while ornithogenic soil was a stronger emitter for N2O during FTCs. CO2 and CH4 fluxes had a correlation with total organic carbon (TOC) and soil/guano moisture (Mc) in penguin guanos and ornithogenic soils. The specific CO2–C production rate (CO2–C/TOC) indicated that the bioavailability of TOC was markedly larger in penguin guanos than in ornithogenic soils during FTCs. This study showed that FTC-released organic C and N from sea animal excreta may play a significant role in FTC-related GHG emissions, which may account for a large proportion of annual fluxes from tundra ecosystems in coastal Antarctica.  相似文献

A soil enrichment culture (SEC) rapidly degraded 96% of 200 mg L?1 neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam (TMX) in MSM broth within 30 d; therefore, its metabolic pathway of TMX, bacterial diversity and plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) activities of the cultured isolates were studied. The SEC transformed TMX via the nitro reduction pathway to form nitrso, urea metabolites and via cleavage of the oxadiazine cycle to form a new metabolite, hydroxyl CLO‐tri. In addition, 16S rRNA gene‐denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis revealed that uncultured rhizobacteria are predominant in the SEC broth and that 77.8% of the identified bacteria belonged to uncultured bacteria. A total of 31 cultured bacterial strains including six genera (Achromobacter, Agromyces, Ensifer, Mesorhizobium, Microbacterium and Pseudoxanthomonas) were isolated from the SEC broth. The 12 strains of Ensifer adhaerens have the ability to degrade TMX. All six selected bacteria showed PGPR activities. E. adhaerens TMX‐23 and Agromyces mediolanus TMX‐25 produced indole‐3‐acetic acid, whereas E. adhaerens TMX‐23 and Mesorhizobium alhagi TMX‐36 are N2‐fixing bacteria. The six‐isolated microbes were tolerant to 200 mg L?1 TMX, and the growth of E. adhaerens was significantly enhanced by TMX, whereas that of Achromobacter sp. TMX‐5 and Microbacterium sp.TMX‐6 were enhanced slightly. The present study will help to explain the fate of TMX in the environment and its microbial degradation mechanism, as well as to facilitate future investigations of the mechanism through which TMX enhances plant vigor.  相似文献

Knowledge of the characteristics of Pb and its isotopic transfer in different compartments is scant, especially for the mobility of Pb isotopes in the geochemical cycle. The present study characterizes differential Pb transport mechanism and the mobility of Pb isotopes in the pedogenic parent rock–pedosphere–irrigated riverwater–cereal–atmosphere system in the Yangtze River delta region, by determining Pb concentration and Pb isotopic ratios of pedogenic parent rocks, fluvial suspended particle matter, tillage soils, soil profiles, irrigated riverwater, fertilizer, Pb ore, cereal roots and grains. The results show that Pb isotopes in the geochemical cycle generally follow the equation of 208Pb/206Pb = −1.157 × 206Pb/207Pb + 3.46 (r2 = 0.941). However, Pb isotopes have different mobility in different environmental matrixes. Whereas in the pedosphere, the heavier Pb (208Pb) usually shows stronger mobility relative to the lighter Pb, and is more likely to transfer into soil exchangeable Pb fraction and carbonates phase. The lighter Pb shows stronger transfer ability from soil to cereal grain via root compared to the heavier Pb. However, the cereal grains have lower 206Pb/207Pb and higher 208Pb/206Pb ratios than root and tillage soil, similar to the airborne Pb and anthropogenic Pb, implying that a considerable amount of Pb in cereal grains comes from the atmosphere. The estimate model shows that 16.7–52.6% (average: 33.5%) of Pb in rice grain is the airborne Pb.  相似文献

Atmospheric tracer studies were conducted using the Ormond Beach Generating Station in Ventura County during September 21 and 22, 1975. The purpose of this work was to probe the transport and dispersion of atmospheric pollutants between Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The area of interest is characterized by rough terrain and complex, coastal meteorological conditions.The sulfur hexafluoride tracer data clearly show that pollutant transport occurs from the Oxnard Plain along the Malibu coast across the Lennox area into the San Fernando Valley of the Los Angeles Basin, and along an inland route through the Thousand Oaks area into the San Fernando Valley as far east as Reseda. These tracer data were found to be consistent with air parcel trajectories constructed from available meteorological data. Pollutants emitted from the Ormond Beach Generating Station, under the test conditions, were determined to be diluted by approximately 105 upon reaching the San Fernando Valley and upon reaching the Los Angeles Basin. Calculations using the Gaussian plume model yielded a close fit to the tracer data when values of the dispersion terms σy, andσz, were taken from the experimental results. Close agreement between the tracer data and the model predictions was also obtained using values of σy, andσz, from the Pasquill-Gifford atmospheric stability class which was one class less stable than that suggested to exist by wind speed and insolation measurements.  相似文献

The fate of fullerene water suspension (FWS) in an aquatic system of Ceratophyllum sp., a rootless submerged plant, under non-sterile sediment-free conditions was investigated. Fast removal of FWS from water by the plants was observed and irreversible adsorption of C60 onto plants and increasing C60 mass on the plant surface with prolonged exposure durations were confirmed. An intact plant extraction procedure was developed and the majority (>80%) of C60 removed from water was extracted from the plants. C60 remained aggregated after being associated with the plants, which was verified by 13C NMR spectroscopy. Light micrographs showed association of FWS on and in the cuticle layers.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract of bovines often contains bacteria that contribute to disorders of the rumen, and may also contain foodborne or opportunistic human pathogens as well as bacteria capable of causing mastitis in cows. Thus there is a need to develop broad-spectrum therapies that are effective while not leading to unacceptably long antibiotic withdrawal times. The effects of the CH(4)-inhibitors nitroethane (2 mg/mL), 2-nitro-1-propanol (2 mg/mL), lauric acid (5 mg/mL), the commercial product Lauricidin? (5 mg/mL), and a finely ground product of the Hawaiian marine algae, Chaetoceros (10 mg/mL), were compared in pure cultures of Streptococcus agalactia, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus bovis, and in a mixed lactic acid rumen bacterial culture. Lauricidin? and lauric acid exhibited the most bactericidal acidity against all bacteria. These results suggest potential animal health benefits from supplementing cattle diets with lauric acid or Lauricidin? to improve the health of the rumen and help prevent shedding of human pathogens.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of Hg, As, and Se in cement production. Two types of cement plants were studied, including the vertical shaft kiln (VSK) and preheater–precalciner kiln (PPK) processes. Determination of Hg, As, and Se in the main material and gas streams were performed. It was found that recycling of particulate matter captured by an air pollution control device caused a significant enrichment of Hg and As inside both processes. The total quantity of Hg entering the process and the quantity emitted to the atmosphere were found to be 10–109 and 6.3–38 mg, respectively, per ton of clinker produced. The average Hg emission was calculated to be around 41% of the total mercury input. The emissions found complied with the European Union (EU) limit and exceeded partly the U.S. limit. Furthermore, it was found that oxidized mercury was the dominant species in the PPK process, whereas the reduced form was dominant in the VSK process, due to the oxidizing and reducing gas conditions, respectively. Regarding the distribution of As and Se, the major amounts were bound to the solid materials, that is, cement clinker and particulate matter. Based on cement production data in China in 2013, the annual emissions of Hg and As were estimated to be in the range of 8.6–52 and 4.1–9.5 tons, respectively.

Implications: There are fairly limited studies on Hg, As, and Se measurements from cement manufacturing facilities in China, and even more limited studies on the behavior in vertical shaft kilns. The needs for increased emission reduction efforts in energy-intensive industries are globally recognized, and an improved understanding of the processes ongoing in a cement kilns system is decisive. Since the processes are complex and almost impossible to recreate in the laboratory, field measurements are indeed important. The findings in the present study were solely based on field measurements and the data are considered to be valuable for the further development of emission reduction technology.  相似文献

In order to achieve sustainable development in agriculture, it is necessary to quantify and compare the energy, economic, and environmental aspects of products. This paper studied the energy, economic, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission patterns in broiler chicken farms in the Alborz province of Iran. We studied the effect of the broiler farm size as different production systems on the energy, economic, and environmental indices. Energy use efficiency (EUE) and benefit-cost ratio (BCR) were 0.16 and 1.11, respectively. Diesel fuel and feed contributed the most in total energy inputs, while feed and chicks were the most important inputs in economic analysis. GHG emission calculations showed that production of 1000 birds produces 19.13 t CO2-eq and feed had the highest share in total GHG emission. Total GHG emissions based on different functional units were 8.5 t CO2-eq per t of carcass and 6.83 kg CO2-eq per kg live weight. Results of farm size effect on EUE revealed that large farms had better energy management. For BCR, there was no significant difference between farms. Lower total GHG emissions were reported for large farms, caused by better management of inputs and fewer bird losses. Large farms with more investment had more efficient equipment, resulting in a decrease of the input consumption. In view of our study, it is recommended to support the small-scale broiler industry by providing subsidies to promote the use of high-efficiency equipment. To decrease the amount of energy usage and GHG emissions, replacing heaters (which use diesel fuel) with natural gas heaters can be considered. In addition to the above recommendations, the use of energy saving light bulbs may reduce broiler farm electricity consumption.  相似文献

Several methods were developed to detect the cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMSs) including octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) in water, sediment, soil, biota, and biosolid samples. Analytical techniques employed to optimize measurement of this compound class in various matrices included membrane-assisted solvent extraction in water, liquid–solid extraction for sediment, soil, biota, and biosolid samples. A subsequent analysis of the extract was conducted by large-volume injection–gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (LVI−GC−MS). These methods employed no evaporative techniques to avoid potential losses and contamination of the volatile siloxanes. To compensate for the inability to improve detection limits by concentrating final sample extract volumes we used a LVI–GC–MS. Contamination during analysis was minimized by using a septumless GC configuration to avoid cVMS’s associated with septum bleed. These methods performed well achieving good linearity, low limits of detection, good precision, recovery, and a wide dynamic range. In addition, stability of cVMS in water and sediment was assessed under various storage conditions. D4 and D5 in Type-I (Milli-Q) water stored at 4 °C were stable within 29 d; however, significant depletion of D6 (60–70%) occurred only after 3 d. Whereas cVMS in sewage influent and effluent were stable at 4 °C within 21 d. cVMS in sediment sealed in amber glass jars at −20 °C and in pentane extracts in vials at −15 °C were stable during 1 month under both storage conditions.  相似文献

The waste seawater discharged in coastal areas from coal-fired power plants equipped with a seawater desulfurization system might carry pollutants such as mercury from the flue gas into the adjacent seas. However, only very limited impact studies have been carried out. Taking a typical plant in Xiamen as an example, the present study targeted the distribution and sea–air transfer flux of volatile mercury in seawater, in order to trace the fate of the discharged mercury other than into the sediments. Samples from 28 sampling sites were collected in the sea area around two discharge outlets of the plant, daily and seasonally. Total mercury, dissolved gaseous mercury and dissolved total mercury in the seawater, as well as gaseous elemental mercury above the sea surface, were investigated. Mean concentrations of dissolved gaseous mercury and gaseous elemental mercury in the area were 183 and 4.48 ng m?3 in summer and 116 and 3.92 ng m?3 in winter, which were significantly higher than those at a reference site. Based on the flux calculation, the transfer of volatile mercury was from the sea surface into the atmosphere, and more than 4.4 kg mercury, accounting for at least 2.2 % of the total discharge amount of the coal-fired power plant in the sampling area (1 km2), was emitted to the air annually. This study strongly suggested that besides being deposited into the sediment and diluted with seawater, emission into the atmosphere was an important fate for the mercury from the waste seawater from coal-fired power plants.  相似文献

OH formation from the ozonolysis reactions of seven internal alkenes with 4–6 carbons, styrene, trans-β-methyl styrene, and α-methyl styrene was studied using complementary techniques. A small-ratio relative-rate technique in which small quantities of OH tracers are added to monitor OH formation yields provided the following results: trans-2-butene, 0.64±0.12; cis-2-butene, 0.33±0.05; trans-2-pentene, 0.46±0.08; cis-2-pentene, 0.29±0.06; trans-3-hexene, 0.53±0.08; cis-3-hexene, 0.36±0.07; and 2-methyl-2-butene, 0.98±0.24. For styrene, trans-β-methyl styrene, and α-methyl styrene, OH yields of 0.07±0.04, 0.22±0.09, and 0.23±0.12 were measured, respectively. A second method, which monitors product formation from the OH reaction with 2-butanol was used to derive OH formation yields from 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, 2-methyl-2-butene and cis-2-pentene, and provided yields of 0.91±0.14, 0.80±0.12, and 0.27±0.07, respectively. The results are briefly discussed in terms of the relationship between structures of these alkenes and OH formation.  相似文献

Purpose

The large global production of plastics and their presence everywhere in the society and the environment create a need for assessing chemical hazards and risks associated with plastic products. The aims of this study were to determine and compare the toxicity of leachates from plastic products made of five plastics types and to identify the class of compounds that is causing the toxicity.

Methods

Selected plastic types were those with the largest global annual production, that is, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or those composed of hazardous monomers (e.g., PVC, acrylonitrile?Cbutadiene?Cstyrene [ABS], and epoxy). Altogether 26 plastic products were leached in deionized water (3?days at 50°C), and the water phases were tested for acute toxicity to Daphnia magna. Initial Toxicity Identification Evaluations (C18 filtration and EDTA addition) were performed on six leachates.

Results

For eleven leachates (42%) 48-h EC50s (i.e the concentration that causes effect in 50 percent of the test organisms) were below the highest test concentration, 250 g plastic/L. All leachates from plasticized PVC (5/5) and epoxy (5/5) products were toxic (48-h EC50s ranging from 2 to 235?g plastic/L). None of the leachates from polypropylene (5/5), ABS (5/5), and rigid PVC (1/1) products showed toxicity, but one of the five tested HDPE leachates was toxic (48-h EC50 17?C24?g plastic/L). Toxicity Identification Evaluations indicated that mainly hydrophobic organics were causing the toxicity and that metals were the main cause for one leachate (metal release was also confirmed by chemical analysis).

Conclusions

Toxic chemicals leached even during the short-term leaching in water, mainly from plasticized PVC and epoxy products.  相似文献

This paper assesses F and Cl emissions as atmospheric pollutants in the Bailén area (southern Spain), originated from the raw material used in structural ceramic industries. The area is one of the most important in Spain, with a daily output over three million pieces. The Bailén area features three categories of industries taking into account F emissions (the most important pollutant from ceramic clays):Group I: Those releasing less than 150 ppm F, which use raw materials with low F contents and/or high proportion of calcite, and fire at about 850°C.Group II: Those releasing 150–300 ppm F, whose raw materials show low calcite percentages and bricks are fired between 850–1050°C.Group III: Those releasing more than 300 ppm F, which use clays containing over 1000 ppm F and firing temperatures around 900°C.The emission rate of F increases with increasing F content in the raw material and firing temperature (particularly when exceeding 1000°C). The calcite and clay mineral contents control the F emissions up to 950°C; on the other hand, a high heating rate hinders fluorine emission to some extent. The emission rate of Cl increases with increasing temperature, but in the most cases chlorine is released at concentrations below 30 ppm.Atmospheric contamination in the Bailén area can reach 3 kg/h of fluorine and up to twice of chlorine emission levels permitted, owing to the massive production of structural clay products.  相似文献
