To elucidate roles of cysts in occurrences of Heterosigma akashiwo blooms, cyst dynamics were studied in northern Hiroshima Bay, the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, where H. akashiwo regularly forms red tide in June. Monthly measurements of seasonal changes in the densities of vegetative cells of H. akashiwo and their germinable cysts in surface sediments (top 1-cm layer) were made for 2 years at three stations. Vegetative cells of H. akashiwo could be detected from April through December throughout the water column, and the existence of vegetative cells was confirmed in surface waters even in winter after incubation of sampled seawater in culture medium. Germinable cysts, enumerated by the extinction dilution method, existed in sediments in all seasons, even before and after the seasonal bloom. The effects of incubation temperature on the germination of natural cysts of H. akashiwo in sediments were examined. Germination was not observed at 5 °C, was low at 10 °C, while it increased at 15 °C, and maintained a high level to 25 °C. The bottom water temperature reached 15 °C (suitable for the germination of cysts) and the surface about 18 °C or more (suitable for the growth of vegetative cells) 2 to 3 weeks before the blooms. The dark survival of H. akashiwo cysts was tested, and it was found that the cysts were viable for at least 650 d at 11 °C, and for 165 d at 25 °C, indicating a significant role of cysts in the survival during winter and summer seasons. The cysts presumably also play an important role in seeding primary populations into water columns when the bottom water reaches a suitable temperature (around 15 °C); thereafter the populations develop with great annual regularity to bloom in June. Effects of storage temperature on the dormancy and maturation of dormant cells of Chattonella spp. were investigated by the extinction dilution method using sediment samples collected in 1984 after the blooming in Harima-Nada. Seasonality of germinability in fresh sediments was also studied in 1985. A storage period of more than 4 months with a low temperature (11°C) was essential for the maturation to induce the germination capacity of dormant cells. The optimal temperature for germination (22°C) had no effects on the maturation. Using fresh Suo-Nada sediments, a marked seasonality of germinability was confirmed. It was weak from autumn to early winter, then strengthened gradually up to a high level, which was maintained between spring and early summer, and again decreased rapidly during summer. The annual life cycle of Chattonella spp., including vetetative and dormant phases, was summarized as follows: (1) vegetative cells in early summer originate from germination of dormant cells in sediments; (2) they form overwintering dormant cells during the summer season; (3) dormant cells spend a period of spontaneous dormancy until next spring; (4) the duration of post dormancy, an enforced one due to low temperatures, follows until early summer. The life cycle of Chattonella spp. is therefore well adapted to the temperature regime in temperate seas such as the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.  相似文献

Cysts of the planktonic oligotrich ciliate Strombidium conicum were isolated from sediment samples, collected monthly in Onagawa Bay on the northeastern Pacific coast of Japan, and incubated under laboratory conditions of 20 °C in light. The excystment ability changed seasonally in a regular manner, which was demonstrated by alternation of three characteristic seasonal patterns of the cumulative excystment curve, i.e., rapid, delayed and transitional patterns. While the transitional excystment pattern was characteristic during the period from spring to midsummer, the rapid pattern occurred during late summer to early winter. The pattern changed again to transitional in midwinter and finally returned to the delayed pattern in late winter or early spring. We suggest that mud temperature was the most determinative factor of this seasonality in excystment ability. Such synchronization of annual excystment helps this species to proliferate rapidly and maintain the vegetative part of the population in the upper water column for a longer period of time where it is subjected to the dispersion process due to water movement. We investigated the effects of light quality on resting stage cell germination and vegetative cell growth of meroplanktonic diatoms in a small port in Hakata Bay, Japan and in the laboratory. During the investigation over the year of 2006, the meroplanktonic diatom bloom first occurred in the end of May and then repeated wane and wax until October in the small port. From late April to middle May, light penetrating the water column was often strong and attenuations of all spectral lights were low. During this period, Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira minima, and Chaetoceros sp. appeared frequently, followed by the blooms of S. costatum and Chaetoceros sp. in late May. Thereafter, S. costatum and Chaetoceros sp. bloomed in late June but not in middle June, when pigmented flagellates bloom appeared. The attenuation of short-wavelength light such as violet and blue lights was markedly high during these diatom and flagellate blooms; all blooms disappeared within several days. Vegetative cell strains of the three diatoms under light emitting diodes (LEDs) with six different spectra (violet, blue, green, orange, red, and near-infrared) grew at a higher rate under short-wavelength light, violet and blue. On the other hand, when suspensions of bottom sediments from Hakata Bay were cultured under the same LEDs and in the dark, vegetative cells of S. costatum appeared under all LEDs except for orange and near-infrared, vegetative cells of T. minima appeared under all LEDs but not in the dark, and vegetative cells of Chaetoceros sp. appeared under violet and blue LEDs. However, vegetative cell densities of the three diatoms increased much more under violet light than under other LEDs within a short period (6 days). Our study indicates that underwater penetration by short-wavelength light, such as violet and blue, may be an important factor in the initiation and development of meroplanktonic diatom blooms.  相似文献

The abundance and species composition of diatoms were investigated along the PN line from the Okinawa Islands to the inner continental shelf in the East China Sea in the early spring of 1996. Viable diatom resting stages in sediments on the shelf were also enumerated by the extinction dilution method (most probable number method). Clear differentiation in the water masses was observed, with less saline, cold water (shelf water) on the shelf region, and warm, saline water (Kuroshio water) prevalent off the shelf and on the shelf edge. In the Kuroshio water, the abundance of diatoms was generally low but species diversity of diatoms was relatively high. In contrast, the spring bloom of diatoms was clearly observed in the shelf water where the water column was weakly stratified. The bloom was dominated by Chaetoceros debilis, contributing occasionally >80% of the diatom community. Resting stages of this species were also the most abundant taxon in the sediments on the shelf. Resuspension of the sediment during winter mixing of the water column should have enabled the resting stages to germinate at the surface. Subsequent vegetative growth after germination led to the formation of an early spring bloom of C. debilis when the water column was stratified and light availability had increased. Intermittent resuspension of sediment on the shelf, driven by strong winds and tidal currents, probably provides opportunities for diatoms with a resting stage to exploit favorable conditions for their germination and subsequent vegetative growth. It is further suggested that complex hydrographic conditions in the East China Sea result in a dynamic bloom with contributions by both autochthonous and allochthonous species.Communicated by T. Life-form population responses of a centric planktonic diatom,Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus Mangin, were investigated in summer 1986 and 1988 in the Izu Islands, Japan, in regionally upwelled water where nutrient concentration changed from favorable to unfavorable conditions for active growth and reproduction (oligotrophication). Two types of life form were observed: vegetative cells of healthy and unhealthy looking conditions and resting spores. The observed life-form responses were experimentally evaluated along with a depletion of limiting nutrients. The algal population ceased vegetative growth and initiated resting spore formation with a disappearance of limiting nitrate, and this life-form response seemed to be triggered by the decrease of cellular nitrogen content below a certain level. Since a large amount of silicon was required for the resting spore formation, a part of vegetative cells were unable to form resting spores and formed unhealthy looking vegetative cells under insufficient concentrations of silicic acid. Percentage shares of the resting spores in the population were linearly related to the amounts of available silicic acid. Vegetative cells which did not form resting spores showed greater mortality than resting spores by attack of bacteria and protozoa; however, vegetative cells could respond quickly to possible nutrient replenishment.  相似文献

Life cycle changes that allow populations of the toxic dinoflagellate Gonyaulax tamarensis Lebour to inhabit the benthos and the plankton alternately are important factors regulationg the initiation and decline of blooms in restricted embavments. When the dynamics of these estuarine populations were monitored during “bloom” and “non bloom” years, it was shown that: (1) each year, germination of benthie cysts inoculated the overlying waters during the vernal warming period, but a large residual population remained in the sediments throughout the blooms; (2) the resulting planktonic population began growth under suboptimal temperature conditions; (3) the populations developed from this inoculum through asexual reproduction until sexuality (and cyst formation) were induced; (4) encystment was not linked to any obvious environmental cue and occurred under apparently optimal conditions; and (5) an increase in the number of non-mitotic swimming cells (planozygotes, the precursors to dormant cysts) accompanied the rapid decline of the planktonic population. Thus encystment, in combination with hypothesized losses due to advection and grazing, contributed substantiatly to the decline of the vegetative cell population. We conclude that the encystment/excystment cycle temporally restricts the occurrence of the vegetative population and may not be optimized for rapid or sustained vegetative growth and bloom formation in shallow embayments. The factors that distinguish “bloom” from “non-bloom” years thus appear to be operating on the growth of the planktonic population.  相似文献

于2003-2007年2月(冬季)、5月(春季)、8月(夏季)、10月(秋季)调查了广州海域16个站位的COD、DO以及其它理化因子的时空分布特征.调查期间,COD质量浓度范围为0.76~9.12 mg·L~(-1),平均值为2.83 mg·L~(-1);溶解氧质量浓度范围为1.98~9.79 mg·L~(-1),平均值为5.27 mg·L~(-1).结果表明,COD与DO的时空分布特征主要受生活污水排放,陆源排污,降雨量以及水动力状况等因素的影响.COD质量浓度在冬季和秋季较高,春季和夏季较低,而DO质量浓度则是冬季和春季高于秋季和夏季.空间分布上,COD质量浓度从湾内向湾外逐步递减,而DO变化趋势则相反,湾内站位在夏季出现缺氧区.相关性分析中,COD质最浓度与氮营养盐及Chl-a显著正相关,而DO则与COD、Chl-a、Ph以及石油烃显著负相关.COD与DO分布特征对于河口地区的赤潮及碳循环研究有一定研究价值.  相似文献

The biochemical composition of vegetative cells and resting spores of Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus Mangin was compared in cultures under various nutrient and light conditions. The cellular content of major nucleotides such as AMP, ADP, ATP and UTP decreased in the order: vegetative cells, nutrient-starved (vegetative) cells and resting spores, indicating that the general metabolism of resting spores is relatively inactive. ADP-glucose was only abundant in nutrient-starved vegetative cells, suggesting metabolic imbalance in these cells. The chl a–specific fluorescence yield of vegetative cells grown under all culture conditions was low, but very high in resting spores. The ratios of the cellular contents of diadinoxanthin to chl a and of diatoxanthin to chl a were higher in resting spores and nutrient-starved vegetative cells than in nutrient-replete vegetative cells. The diadinoxanthin–diatoxanthin xanthophyll cycle was active in resting spores; the xanthophyll cycle was synchronized with a 14 h light:10 h dark photoperiod. Also, the ratios of cellular content of diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin to cellular content of chl a in resting spores were relatively high in high irradiance, and decreased gradually in conditions of darkness over long culture periods. Under conditions of strong light and high temperature, most resting spores survived more than 40 d while nutrient-starved vegetative cells died within 33 d. These results suggest that resting spore formation is a strategy for enhancing protection and lowering metabolic rate for survival. These physiological changes accompanying spore formation enable resting spores not only to overwinter but also to “oversummer” in the coastal euphotic layer. Temporal patterns in the structure and activity of schools of the Atlantic silverside Menidia menidia were investigated under laboratory conditions using a new computerized video technique for three-dimensional analysis. Fish were collected by seining at Middle Bridge, Pettaquamscutt River, South Kingstown, Rhode Island, USA. Approximately once a week from May to December, 1979, the behavior of a school was videotape-recorded in the laboratory at 30 min intervals from sunrise to sunset under a temperature and photoperiod regime simulating ambient field conditions. Four measurements of structure and activity were computed: (1) swimming speed (SPEED); (2) distance to nearest neighbor (NN); (3) mean direction of travel (DOT); (4) depth in the tank (DEPTH). Results demonstrated a strong seasonal rhythm in the behavior of schools, but were inconclusive in showing periodicities associated with daily, tidal or lunar cycles. NN and DEPTH were significantly different between spring, summer, fall and winter while SPEED changed significantly across 3 seasons (summer and winter were not significantly different). DOT was bimodally distributed, with peaks in spring and fall. Changes in these variables corresponded to shifts in the behavior of silversides from active, synchronized schools in spring and fall to inactive mills in summer and inactive non-schooling groups in winter. Changes in schooling behavior were only partly related to changes in temperature and photoperiod. Patterns of silverside schooling behavior correlated with their reproductive and migratory cycles and may represent an anti-predator strategy.  相似文献

Two vegetative clones (designated 11/85 and 7/86 in accordance with month/year of collection) of the chlorophyte macroalga Ulva rotundata were collected in the vicinity of Beaufort, North Carolina, USA. Each was grown in an outdoor continuous-flow system in summer (>-20°C) of 1986 and late winter (10° to 17°C) of 1987 in graded scalar quantum irradiances ranging from 9 to 100% of full sunlight, with and without NH 4 + enrichment. The pigment content of plants from each irradiance was determined following 4 to 8 d sunny weather. Chlorophyll (chl) and carotenoid content were inverse curvilinear functions of irradiance. The chl a:b and carotenoid: chl ratios were positively related to irradiance. The close nonlinear relationship between chl (a+b) and the chl a:b ratio was independent of clone, temperature or NH 4 + -enrichment. Chl (a+b) content was linearly correlated with light-regulated growth rate in the summer, but showed a marked hysteresis in the relationship in winter due to photoinhibition. The photon growth yield (PGY, i.e., the biomass yield per unit absorbed light) was maximal for plants grown at slightly subsaturating irradiances, and dropped off sharply at lower irradiances. At higher irradiances, PGY declined gradually in summer and markedly in winter. Light absorption exceeded growth needs at full sunlight, suggesting that U. rotundata was incapable of further reducing its pigment content when growth rate was light-saturated. This, along with the linear chlgrowth relationship, is consistent with photosynthetic feedback regulation of chl content. Regardless of the mechanism, chl regulation may operate within the constraints of a resource tradeoff between light harvesting and carboxylation capacities, such that pigmentation must be optimized rather than maximized.  相似文献

Sediment traps were deployed in a 60 m water column near the Eddystone Lighthouse on the south west coast of England for one year from March 1984. In April, the traps collected the cysts of a planktonic ciliate with a flux of almost 35 000 m-2 d-1. The cysts were attributed to a planktonic oligotrich [provisionally identified as Strombidium crassulum (Leegard) Kahl], which was common in the water at the time. Identification was achieved through the discovery of the incipient formation of the cysts in preserved water samples and by the similarity of the morphology of the cysts with that of other oligotrichid ciliates. Attempts to prove the relationship by incubation have so far failed. The production of the cysts followed the main spring bloom of diatoms and coincided with a small bloom of autotrophic oligotrichs. In the traps, the total number and percentage of cysts with contents decreased rapidly after the encystment event. However, potentially viable cysts were still recorded in the plankton eleven months later, with minimum fluxes of 200 cysts m-2 d-1. Resuspension of bottom sediments by tides and storms ensured that a large population of cysts was always present in the water column during the winter, awaiting the right conditions to stimulate excystment and the initiation of a new motile population.  相似文献

Mobile species may actively seek refuge from stressful conditions in biogenic habitats on rocky shores. In Hong Kong, the upper intertidal zone is extremely stressful, especially in summer when organisms are emersed for long periods in hot desiccating conditions. As a result, many species migrate downshore between winter and summer to reduce these stressful conditions. The littorinids Echinolittorina malaccana and E. vidua, for example, are found on open rock surfaces high on the shore in winter but the majority migrate downshore in summer to the same tidal height as a common barnacle, Tetraclita japonica. In the laboratory, where environmental conditions could be controlled to approximate those occurring on the shore, we tested whether the downshore migration allowed littorinids to select barnacles as biogenic habitats to reduce stress and if this behaviour varied between seasons. In summer, littorinids demonstrated a strong active preference for the barnacles, which was not observed in the cool winter conditions, when animals were found on open rock surfaces even when barnacles were present. Littorinids, therefore, only actively select biogenic habitats during the summer in Hong Kong when they migrate downshore, suggesting that such habitats may play an important, temporal, role in mitigating environmental stress on tropical shores.  相似文献

Physicochemical analyses and cyanobacterial diversity of Ramgarh Lake water were performed at five sampling sites during winter, summer, and monsoon seasons. Higher load of solids, carbon, and nutrients were persistent throughout the analysis that indicates the conversion of lake from oligotrophic to eutrophic nature. High nutrients load enhanced cyanobacterial biomass, while low nutrients load produced relatively less biomass. The physicochemical parameters of water samples revealed minimum 2.9 mg L?1 dissolved oxygen (DO) at site-1 during summer, while maximum (5.6 mg L?1) at site-4 in monsoon season. Maximum biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (40 mg L?1) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (126 mg L?1) were recorded at site-1 during summer, whereas minimum BOD (18 mg L?1) and COD (52 mg L?1) were evident at site-3 in monsoon season. Minimum concentration of nitrate (0.72 mg L?1) was recorded at site-3 in summer, whereas maximum 2.7 mg L?1 was present at site-5 in winter season. The phosphate concentration was maximum (0.52 mg L?1) at site-5 in summer, and minimum (0.18 mg L?1) was observed at site-4 in monsoon season. Cyanobacterial diversity was higher during all the seasons, and dominated by the species of Microcystis at all the five sampling sites.  相似文献

The Gulf of Aqaba exhibits a strong seasonality due to convective mixing during winter and stratification during summer. The present study provides a detailed appraisal of summer and winter sea-water characteristics at the northern coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, that is witnessing rapid development and increasing changes in its geomorphological characteristics. Sea-water temperature, salinity, nutrients, and chlorophyll a concentrations were measured biweekly at five coastal and four cross-sectional stations during the periods February to April and July to September 2004. Meteorological conditions were continuously recorded at the Marine Science Station. The coastal study sites included four open coastal stations and a marina with one-way exchange with the open water. The effect of convective mixing was clearly apparent on the sea-water characteristics. Natural seasonal characteristics of higher nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations were recorded during winter at most of the open coastal stations. In the cross-sectional stations, the concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll a were not different between the surface and the bottom during winter, but the bottom waters had generally higher concentrations during summer. Some deviations from the natural seasonal cycle were recorded at the marina and other coastal stations. Here, higher nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations were recorded in summer than in winter. These deviations that are most likely due to anthropogenic effects are discussed.  相似文献

The colonial marine hydroid Eirene viridula Peron and Lesueur (Thecata, Campanulinidae) is readily maintained under laboratory conditions and reproduces in both vegetative and sexual modes. Polyps from these colonies displayed 4 distinct body regions, which were studied by comparison of light and electron micrographs of semi-thin and ultra-thin sections. Attention was directed chiefly to the epitheliomuscular and digestive muscle cells, found in all 4 regions and characterized by the presence of a central vacuole. Particular emphasis has been placed upon the coated vesicles and discoidal coated vesicles, which appear side by side in the digestive muscle cells of the stomach, and upon the central vacuoles typical of the muscle cells of the contractile parts of the body. The effects of cold-dark conditions on excystment ofAlexandriuin pseudogonyaulax (Biecheler) Horiguchi ex Yuki et Fukuyo (Gonyaulacales: Dinophyceae) resting cysts were studied for different lengths of time (0 to 120 d). Cyst populations of the same age were obtained by incubating a culture in a diluted growth medium. Cysts that were not exposed to cold-dark conditions showed a long dormancy period and low germination success. A high percentage of excystment, together with a rather synchronous germination, were observed for cysts exposed to cold-dark conditions for 40 to 100 d. Shorter (20 d) and longer (120 d) periods of storage in the cold-dark incubator lowered excystment success and germination synchrony. These results indicate that low temperatures and absence of light during the dormancy period are strongly effective, not only in enhancing germination success, but also in modulating and timing the whole excystment process.  相似文献

以黑臭为特征的城市内河污染近来受到关注,检测和分析污染河流水质的生物毒性对水质标识和生态评价十分必要。本研究逐月检测了温州市九山外河(JS River)和山下河(SX River)两条典型黑臭河道水样对斑马鱼、发光细菌和热带爪蟾胚胎的毒性效应。结果显示,黑臭河道水体对斑马鱼、发光细菌(青海弧菌Vibrio Qinghaiensis Q67)和爪蟾胚胎均具有毒性效应。以斑马鱼死亡率和发光细菌相对抑光率表征的水质综合毒性较一致,且以发光细菌更为敏感。爪蟾胚胎致畸实验主要通过存活率和畸形率来表征水体的毒性。3类生物监测均显示SX水体毒性明显高于JS整体毒性,这与两条河黑臭程度相一致。通过发光细菌检测水体综合毒性的分析,显示SX和JS水体毒性在5月-8月的夏季较高,冬春季节较低,表明黑臭河道水质毒性季节性变化与水体温度(T)和溶解氧(DO)值关系密切。本研究结果可为污染水体生物毒性检测和黑臭水体综合评价及后续治理提供依据。  相似文献

During two expeditions of the R.V. Polarstern to the Arctic Ocean, pack ice and under-ice water samples were collected during two different seasons: late summer (September 2002) and late winter (March/April 2003). Physical and biological properties of the ice were investigated to explain seasonal differences in species composition, abundance and distribution patterns of sympagic meiofauna (in this case: heterotrophs >20 µm). In winter, the ice near the surface was characterized by extreme physical conditions (minimum ice temperature: –22°C, maximum brine salinity: 223, brine volume: 5%) and more moderate conditions in summer (minimum ice temperature: –5.6°C, maximum brine salinity: 94, most brine volumes: 5%). Conditions in the lowermost part of the ice did not differ to a high degree between summer and winter. Chlorophyll a concentrations (chl a) showed significant differences between summer and winter: during winter, concentrations were mostly <1.0 µg chl a l–1, while chl a concentrations of up to 67.4 µmol l–1 were measured during summer. The median of depth-integrated chl a concentration in summer was significantly higher than in winter. Integrated abundances of sympagic meiofauna were within the same range for both seasons and varied between 0.6 and 34.1×103 organisms m–2 in summer and between 3.7 and 24.8×103 organisms m–2 in winter. With regard to species composition, a comparison between the two seasons showed distinct differences: while copepods (42.7%) and rotifers (33.4%) were the most abundant sea-ice meiofaunal taxa during summer, copepod nauplii dominated the community, comprising 92.9% of the fauna, in winter. Low species abundances were found in the under-ice water, indicating that overwintering of the other sympagic organisms did not take place there, either.  Copper toxicity was tested on a coastal population of the mysid Praunus flexuosus (Müller) from Southampton Water (Southern England) under winter and summer conditions. Ten-day toxicity tests were performed on the different life-cycle stages (female, male and juvenile) present in winter (December/February) and summer (August). The individuals were in winter or summer physiological condition and were exposed to seawater to which 0, 5, 25, 75 and 200 μg l−1 copper was added. There were significantly different copper toxicity effects in winter and summer. In winter mortality was ≤ 1% at all levels of copper exposure, while in summer identical exposure levels caused mortality of up to 93%. The 96 h LC50 was 30.8 μg l−1 copper added in the summer. In winter, the low mortality prevented calculation of LC50. There were differences in responses to copper between the life-cycle stages. Juveniles were more sensitive than adults, and were severely affected within 24 h. Females were more affected than males at lower doses and shorter exposure times.
