Samples of the population of Yoldia limatula Say were obtained from the Bideford River, Malpeque Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada, during the summers of 1979 and 1980 by means of a dredge and a Ponar grab sampler. Size frequency analysis demonstrated that individuals in the size range 25- to 35-mm shell length were numerically dominant in May, June and July. Recruitment of juveniles in August resulted in the dominance of individuals of 5 mm and smaller which comprised 50% of the population at that time. The overall sex ratio was 48.8% males to 51.2% females. From annual lengths measured at successive winter growth bands it was determined that one-yr olds attained a shell length of between 13.8 and 17.7 mm, two-yr olds between 26.7 and 28.0 mm, three-yr olds between 33.8 and 35.2 mm, and foru-yr olds had a mean length of 38.7 mm. Y. limatula produced a croppable annual yield of between 1.19 and 2.65 g dry tissue weight m-2 with P/B ratios of 0.65 and 1.45 respectively.  相似文献

A two-year study on a field population of Ligia pallasii Brandt has shown that the isopods live for 1.5 to 2 years. Breeding occurs in the spring and early summer, with some females carrying winter broods of eggs. The mean length of breeding females is 22.5±2.2 mm (standard deviation) and the mean brood size is 48±11 eggs. Mature males are larger than mature females (900 and 300 mg live weight, respectively), and are disproportionately broader (31×17 mm and 22.5×9 mm, respectively). The larger size and breadth of the males is an adaptation for copulation, and may be atributed in some measure to slower growth of the female due to the extra energy demands of reproduction. The overall 1:1 ratio of males to females in the population represents the balance between an equal sex ratio in the immature stages, more females in the 18 to 24 mm length category, and more males in the larger length categories. This condition is attributed mainly to the faster growth of the males.  相似文献

Surveys of the coral-inhabiting snailCoralliophila violacea (Lamarck) (=C. neritoidea Kiener) were made on shallow fringing reefs (<8 m deep) around Hsiao-Liuchiu, Taiwan, between July and October 1990. The snails were aggregated into patches on the surface of massive poritid coral colonies. Coral colonies >40 cm in diameter were more likely to bear patches of snails than smaller colonies, and also to have more snails. The coralliophilids ranged from 5 to 30 mm in aperture length. The sex ratio of the population was biased toward males (539:279), with only a few small individuals of indistinguishable sex. Snails between 6 and 10 mm were all males, while most snails with aperture lengths 20 mm were females. Judging from the distinct size ranges of males and females within patches and from the observed degeneration of the penis, the snails may have changed sex from male to female with increasing size. Sex-change may occur across a wide size range (10 to 20 mm). The correlation of smallest female size and largest male size among patches indicates that snail size at sex-change is peculiar to each individual patch. Those females in patches with a single female (but many males) were significantly smaller than females in multiple-female patches. It is likely that in the absence of females males change sex at a smaller size, whereas in the presence of large females males delay sexchange until they have reached a larger size. The plasticity of size at sex-change may be adaptive and a result of natural selection at the individual level.  相似文献

Egg production ofAcartia clausi andCentropages hamatus was measured along 6 transects in the Skagerrak every third day from 26 May to 20 June 1990. Egg production was highest in the shallow waters north of Denmark, with occasional peaks in frontal regions along the Swedish and the Danish west coasts. Linear regression analysis showed that the egg production was significantly (p<0.05) related to chlorophylla measured either as average surface concentration or integrated over the whole water column. When analysing each transect or each time period separately, the surface chlorophyll generally was a better predictor of egg production than the depth-integrated chlorophyll. Regressions improved when analysing the whole area for a short period of time rather than analysing a single transect for a month. The data suggest that the Skagerrak planktonic system functions more similarly over the whole area in a short period of time than over a month in a restricted area. Mixingwithin the system in frontal regions or in connection with eddies is more important for the secondary production thantransport to it by the Baltic Current or the Jutland Current.SKAGEX Contribution No. 4  相似文献

The life history and reproductive strategy of the amphipod Synchelidium trioostegitum were studied on a sandy shore at Dolsando, South Korea. Samples were taken once a month for 1 year using a 0.3-mm sledge net on the bottom in 1 m of water at spring tide low water. The highest density of S. trioostegitum occurred from February through March. Ovigerous females were recorded virtually year-round, with a particularly high proportion in fall and early spring, indicating continuous recruitment with two dominant periods. The occurrence of ovigerous females was not correlated with environmental factors, such as temperature and salinity, and no significant difference between the body lengths of females and males was observed. The mean adult body length was greater in the early spring breeding period than in the fall. Brood size and embryo volume were positively correlated with the body length of ovigerous females. Brood size significantly decreased with increases in embryonic developmental stage. Embryo volume was significantly larger in the fall than in the early spring, but brood size was significantly smaller in fall, suggesting a strategy of using the same amount of reproductive energy during breeding periods. This type of reproductive effort is different from that of other Synchelidium amphipods having the same habitat and feeding regime. Our results suggest that interspecific competition for food and territory may be important in defining the reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Aspects of moulting and reproduction of a primarily adult population of the spiny lobster Jasus edwardsii (Hutton) (Palinuridae) were investigated in the field and at an adjacent laboratory in northeast New Zealand from 1982 to 1986. Most males moulted in October/November, ensuring they were in intermoult stage at mating. Females moulted in late April–June, 2 to 3 mo later than females from more southern latitudes. For individual females the specific timing of ecdysis and mating and the length of the interval between them were related to size. Larger females (125 to 135 mm carapace length), tended to moult earlier and wait longer (up to 38 d) before mating, but did so prior to smaller females (95 to 105 mm carapace length, CL) which moulted later, but mated within as few as 9 d. These differences are explained equally well by size-dependent growth processes and by social or chemical inhibition by larger females. Most spiny lobsters (93 to 131 mm CL) moulted at night at depths <10 m. No clear reasons for these behaviours could be found. Eggs were incubated for 101 to 116 d by females in the study population, 70% of the time recorded for more southern areas, these differences probably being related to differences in water temperature. A consequence of earlier female moulting and egg-laying, and longer egg-incubation periods with increasing latitude is that the majority of J. edwardsii larvae hatch in September–November.  相似文献

The red mullet Mullus surmuletus is one of the main target species of the trawling fishery along the continental shelf off the Island of Majorca. The size distribution of the catches, and the reproduction, age and growth of this species have been studied based on sampling carried out from 1990 to 1992. The length range of the catches was between 10 and 32 cm, with a main distribution between 15 and 20 cm, but this included small specimens (recruits of 10 to 11 cm) from August. In the >19 cm length-class, females clearly dominated. Monthly variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in the percentage of mature specimens showed that males spawn from December to June, whereas the reproductive activity of the females centres around spring. Fifty percent of males and females mature at 15 and 16.8 cm, respectively, corresponding to 1 yr of age. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the trawl fishery consists of six age-groups, including a very high proportion of individuals between 0 and 4 yr old. Population growth curves revealed that females grow comparatively slowly over a longer period of time and attain greater asymptotic sizes than males. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L =31.28 cm; growth coefficient, K=0.211 yr-1; theoretical age when length is zero, t 0=-2.348 yr.  相似文献

Female preferences for male calling bout duration in a field cricket   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary The calls of male field crickets attract sexually receptive females. In Gryllus integer, males differ from one another in their durations of uninterrupted calling (calling bout lengths). Tape recordings of the calls of 50 wild-caught males revealed that 14 males spent most of their calling time in short bouts (Fig. 1A), 18 in both short and long bouts (Fig. 1B), and 18 in long bouts (Fig. 1C). Re-recordings of 32 males after 3 weeks showed that calling bout lengths of individual males are stable with time (age) (Fig. 2). Three phonotaxis experiments investigated whether calling bout lengths of males affect female preferences. They demonstrated that (1) females can discriminate among conspecific males on the basis of calls alone; (2) females are preferentially attracted to males with long calling bout lengths; and (3) calling bout length is the specific factor responsible for preferential attraction. These results precisely identify a criterion that females use to discriminate among potential mates of their own species.  相似文献

Summary An individual's rank in a dominance hierarchy is often based on size or weight, especially in insects. Foundresses of the social wasp, Polistes annularis, vary greatly in size as measured by wing length, dry weight, fat weight, and residue weight after fat has been extracted. Females that emerged from the same nest are much more similar in size to each other than they are to females that emerged from other nests. Within nests however queens are usually larger than their subordinates. Queens that emerged from one nest may be smaller than subordinates that emerged from another nest. We found no evidence of a group of females that are forced into being subordinates because of inadequate feeding as larvae. Females are also probably not attempting to begin new nests with females as different in size as possible from themselves since means and variances of winglength of females on new nests do not differ from those of all females emerging from that natal nest.  相似文献

Summary Population density affects the dynamics of mate acquisition and the opportunity for sexual selection in natural populations of the seed bug, Neacoryphus bicrucis Say (Hemiptera : Lygaeidae). The opportunity for sexual selection and the intensity of directional sexual selection on body length increased as the population density declined within a season for a population in a small, disjunct patch of host plant, Senecio anonymus. In a larger, dispersed population, both measures of selection were greater in host plant patches of low rather than high adult density when the population was sampled at peak density. Under conditions of higher density, males were more likely to share plants, larger males were less likely to monopolize patches of host plant to which females were attracted for mating, and smaller males were more likely to mate in the presence of large males. Thus, resource defense polygyny collapsed under high density, obviating the advantage of size in territory control, and resulted in scramble competition among males for mates. The population exhibited significant additive genetic variation for body length. This suggests that natural selection acting on other components of fitness favors smaller size or that the direction of sexual selection on size fluctuates between generations in response to the between-year variation in population density. Thus, strong sexual selection appears to impose a significant genetic load.  相似文献

Feeding rates and growth of the free-living brackish water nematode Chromadorita tenuis (G. Schneider, 1906) was studied throughout its life cycle. Populations were fed with the pennate diatom Nitzschia palea var debilis (Kütz.) Grunow in the laboratory at 18°C in agar plates based on seawater of 6 S. On the average, during the first day after hatching they ingest 1 g of cell contents, equal to 20 times the body weight, and the body weight increased from 3.6 to 6.9 ng C. During the entire 12.5 d of juvenile life the weight increased 40 times, whereas the weight only doubled during adult life, which is almost entirely devoted to reproduction. Adult virgins are larger than mated females. The large size of adult virgins indicates that about 50% of the gonad energy might be transferred to somatic growth. The size-frequency distribution of adult body lengths of a laboratory grown population as compared to four wild populations shows that the food offered to the laboratory population was of a poor quality.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproductive biology of the common shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) were studied in Port Erin Bay, Isle of Man, Irish Sea. Size at sexual maturity was determined from the proportions of ovigerous females and of females with maturing ovaries. The size at which 50% of females are mature is estimated (±95% confidence intervals) as 12.5±0.48 mm carapace length. Based on the proportions of ovigerous females and of mature females, the main breeding season was from January to June. Mean ovarian dry weights indicated two broods (winter and summer), with females bearing winter broods (WB) having higher gonad indices than those with summer broods (SB). WB females with non-eyed eggs and with eyed eggs differed in the regression of ovarian dry weight on carapace length, indicating preparation for laying a second brood. In both broods the moult stages of berried females were related to egg stage. Moulting will occur following the release of the brood. During embryonic development, mean egg length and egg volume were larger in all stages, and the mean dry weight of individual eggs of all stages heavier, in WB than in SB; there was no difference in egg number, however. Consequently, reproductive investment, the proportion of female weight devoted to egg production, was 67% higher in WB (0.20±0.04) than in SB (0.12±0.03). There is a significant effect of egg volume on brood weight, but not on egg number. In both broods, egg number was a negatively allometric function of female body size in non-eyed eggs and an isometric function of female body size in eyed eggs. Brood mortality during incubation was higher in SB (17%) than WB (10%). Differences in the reproductive variables and investment between the two broods of C. crangon are discussed in the light of reproductive strategies and life history.Communicated by J.P. Summary Seasonal variation in mean hind tibia length and mean testes length is investigated in the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria (L.). There is a cycle in mean hind tibia length and mean testes length over a season. The body size curve peaks later than the testes length curve, showing that there is no fixed relationship between the two variables. The causes of variation in testes size and its influence on copula duration are experimentally examined. Increasing the number of Drosophila eaten per day leads to increased mature testes length. Males with larger testes copulate for longer than males with smaller ones, and smaller males copulate for longer than do larger males. While testes shrivel with successive copulas, copula duration remains constant. The more females a male is prepared to copulate with in a day (up to five), the longer he copulates with each. The shrinkage of the testes of males collected throughout a day suggests that males copulate with an average of 4 females per day. The costs of sperm production are thus shown to have a significant influence on the copula duration.Offprint requests to: P.I. Ward at the second address  相似文献

Summary The sphecid wasp Sceliphron assimile Dahlbom builds mud cells whose volumes are positively correlated to maternal length, the relationship being highly significant for daughters (Fig. 1). However, small females build cells longer and wider in relation to their own body length than large females do (Fig. 3). Cell volume closely regulates the total weight of prey stocked per cell (Figs. 4, 10). Maternal length is directly related to prey size and inversely related to the number of prey stocked (Fig. 5). Female length, above a threshold of 19 mm, probably does not influence her chance of starting a nest (Fig. 6) but is strongly positively correlated to achieved fecundity. Large females have larger offspring and a higher proportion of daughters than small females do (Fig. 7), but this is largely controlled by maternal behaviour rather than by genetical mechanisms (Fig. 10). The results are in general agreement with those of Trivers and Hare (1976) for solitary wasps, but large progeny are cheaper to produce per unit weight than small ones, and for a given weight sons are cheaper to produce than daughters.  相似文献

Samples of antarctic euphausiids, Euphausia superba and Thysanoessa macrura were obtained during the MD 25 FIBEX expedition of the R. V. Marion Dufresne, in February 1981, to the southwest Indian Ocean. Individual and mean coefficients of condition (K m) were calculated from variations in weight as a function of total length and of carapace length. In E. superba, no significant differences were found as a function of sex or development stage in either total length and weight or carapace length and weight. In T. macrura, a significant allometric difference emerged in the wet weight of juveniles, males and females as a function of total length, and in wet weight as a function of carapace length between adults and subadults. In both E. superba and T. macrura, wet weight as a function of total length differed significantly among stations, and also between species, with a greater weight increase for T. macrura in summer. The coefficients of condition calculated for all wet weight-total length relationships showed that the morphologically different Group II males were heavier than Group I males and mature females. K m in T. macrura was higher for females than for juveniles or males, indicating a greater weight gain by the females. These differences probably reflect real differences in physiology and may affect the distribution of these two species.  相似文献

Spisula solidissima (Dillwyn, 1817) is a large, suspension-feeding bivalve, whose range extends from Nova Scotia to South Carolina. This species is harvested commercially. Shell length and age data were collected for this species from 1980 to 1994 during surveys of population size and structure. These data were used to examine the relationship between the growth rate of S.␣solidissima and intraspecific density. The null hypothesis was that density (represented by number of individuals per tow) would have no effect on rate of growth. A negative relationship would support the alternative hypothesis, that intraspecific competition had taken place. This analysis focused on the surfclam population offshore from the Delmarva Peninsula, USA because: (1) a major recruitment event occurred in 1977, (2) clam fishermen had reported “stunted” surfclams in that area, (3) a wide range of local densities were available to examine, and (4) the existence of a closed area within the study area set up an interesting contrast with areas left open to harvesting. Maps of surfclam abundance across the Delmarva region demonstrate that areas of highest density have generally remained in the same location through time. The results suggested that intraspecific competition has been important in structuring this population. Based on data from 1980 to 1992, shell length was significantly reduced at high density, and a significant interaction between age and density was observed. Growth modeling indicated decreased asymptotic lengths and growth rates with increasing density. In nine out of ten pairwise randomization tests, fitted von Bertalanffy growth curves, representing different densities, were significantly different from each other. High densities of clams have persisted in the area that was closed to harvesting for 11 years (1980 to 1991). In 1994, length at age was significantly less in this closed area compared to that in the surrounding area. This effect was apparent in clams from 3 to 17 years of age, and most pronounced in the cohort that recruited to the Delmarva region in high numbers in 1977. Lower growth rates within the closed area have management implications for the optimal duration of closures. Received: 16 May 1997 / Accepted: 7 October 1997  相似文献

Female mate preference for dorsal fin length in male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) was investigated. In a dichotomous choice experiment using live males, females preferred males with longer dorsal fins to those with shorter dorsal fins. When the dorsal fin lengths of the two males were reversed by surgical manipulation, the females reversed their preference. To further examine this preference behaviour, a second dichotomous choice experiment was conducted using digitally modified male images that differed only in dorsal fin lengths. In this next experiment, females preferred male images with a longer dorsal fin than those with a shorter dorsal fin. In order to clarify the cost of possessing a long dorsal fin for males, the effect of dorsal fin length on swimming performance of males was also examined with a flow chamber. Male swimming performance was enhanced by surgically shortening the dorsal fin. The result of this study suggests that the long dorsal fin of male guppies is a costly handicap that may have evolved due to female mate choice.  相似文献

The local resource enhancement (LRE) model predicts that in cooperatively breeding species, sex ratios will be biased in favor of the more helpful sex. In this study, we assess the assumptions underlying the LRE model in a population of cooperatively breeding wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in Northern Botswana monitored over a 15-year period. In this population, litter size and pup survival to 1 year are strongly affected by pack size and the breeding female’s age, but adult males have a stronger and more linear effect on females’ reproductive performance than do adult females. This asymmetry in the benefits derived from male and female helpers is reflected in male-biased sex ratios in litters at the time pups emerge from the den. Sex ratio biases are most pronounced in the litters of the youngest mothers who live in significantly smaller packs than older females. The presence of potential rivals for the dominant female’s position depresses pup production at the time of emergence, suggesting that competition among females for breeding positions may also contribute to the selective forces affecting birth sex ratios.  相似文献

Two mark-recapture studies, regular population censuses, field observations, and laboratory culture were used to study the life history of the tropical marine gastropod Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, 1758 from Cape Maeda, Okinawa Island, from April 1984 to March 1986. In the field, the average rate of increase in shell length of marked juvenile snails was 1.0±0.3 mm wk-1 (N=13), with a maximum of 1.5 mm wk-1 (initial shell length 10.6 to 17.2 mm). In the laboratory, the maximum growth rate of juveniles was 3.0 mm wk-1 with food ad libitum. Snails with primordial teeth on the shells grew at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm wk-1 for about 2 wk. The adults continued to grow at a similar rate for an additional 3 to 6 wk, and ceased detectable growth when some females started spawning egg masses. In the littoral zone on Okinawa Island, snails reproduced throughout the year. Egg masses brooded by three females (shell length 17.4 to 21.3 mm) in the field contained 90 000 to 133 000 ova. In the laboratory, brooding periods of three females lasted 6,8, and 9 d. The estimated average frequency of spawning was 5 egg masses female-1 yr-1. The mean shell length of adult females (20.3 mm) was significantly larger than that of adult males (19.6 mm). The life-history strategy of C. annulus is characterized by rapid growth, high fecundity, and repeated spawning throughout the year.  相似文献

From 1979 to 1983 a population ofMeganyctiphanes norvegica was regularly found in a confined location in the northern Kattegat. The development of this pelagic population was followed over one complete year-cycle, and is discussed in light of published data on landlocked and oceanic populations. In the Kattegat,M. norvegica mature at the age of 9 to 12 months. Copulation starts in january, but fully developed spermatophores are present in males for at least 9 months. Spawning starts in April and continues until October with a marked peak in July. As only 10 to 15% of the gravid females belong to the II-group, it is concluded that recruitment is due to the I-group. Linear growth is fastest in spring and early summer, rises to a second maximum in October and stagnates during winter. The weight development shows some discontinuties caused by spawning or the accumulation of reserves towards winter. Weight decreases during winter. Growth in length and in weight runs largely parallel in both sexes, and can be closely correlated with the prevailing food supply. Diurnal vertical migration could be demonstrated. The results indicate a continuous development, which suggests the existence of an autonomous palagic population, a well suited subject for long-term investigation.  相似文献
