Photographic samples were taken every 5 m along two 40 m transects on mostly rock face at Signy Island, Antarctica, during the austral winter of 1991. Dense and taxonomically rich communities of benthos occurred at most of the sublittoral study locations. These communities, however, varied significantly with substratum type, substratum profile and depth. Algae were generally the largest occupiers of space, but the area of substratum colonised by animal taxa increased whenever the profile approached vertical. Shallower than 15 m, disturbance effects, largely from ice, restricted community development to a high degree, but the frequency of disturbance at 25 m appeared to maintain high diversity by preventing domination of the assemblage by a few competitively superior taxa. Bryozoans, and to a lesser extent sponges, were the most abundant animal phyla. Among the bryozoans, species with an encrusting growth form occurred at the shallowest depths followed by encrusting massive/folaceous species and, at 40 m, the erect flexible forms. The ratio of encrusting to erect bryozoan species changed rapidly over the 0 to 50 m depth zone, from exclusively encrusting at 0 to 5 m to approaching 1 at 50 m. The erect bryozoans studied, from the shallow sublittoral to 290 m, could be classified as encrusting massive (foliaceous), erect flexible or erect rigid forms. There was some suggestion, despite the overlap between groups and considerable intra-group variation, that encrusting massive forms were abundant in the shallowest water, followed by erect flexible forms and then erect rigid forms with increasing depth. Some species which occurred as encrusting massive/foliaceous forms in deeper water occurred mostly in encrusting form only in shallow water (<15 m).  相似文献

Extracts from marine sponges collected along the French coast of Mediterranean in 1983 have been tested for antibacterial and antifungal activities. The distribution of antimicrobial activities against five classes of microorganisms (5 Gram-positive and 5 Gram-negative terrestrial bacteria, 10 marine bacteria, 15 human pathogenic fungi and 5 phytopathogenic fungi) among 28 species of marine demosponges is reported. Antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (77%) is much more frequent than against Gram-negative bacteria (53%). Activity against marine bacteria and yeast is less frequent (32%). Those sponges which contain a large quantily of symbiotic bacteria display a weak antifungal activity.  相似文献

Thirty species of temperate-zone sponges representative of all orders of the Demospongiae have been tested for antibacterial activity. The results indicate the following: that a higher percentage of temperate than tropical species produced active extracts (87% as opposed to 58%); that sponge extracts more frequently inhibited the growth of marine bacteria than they did non-marine bacteria (76.5% compared to 56%); that 46.5% of the extracts tested inhibited growth of Gram-negative bacteria while only 6.5% inhibited growth of Gram-positive bacteria. There is no obvious correlation between incidence of antibacterial activity and latitude of occurrence, systematic group or growth form of the sponge. It is suggested that antibacterial agents produced by sponges may have a role in enhancing the efficiency with which sponges retain bacterial food.  相似文献

The relationship between sponge size, habitat and shape was studied in the encrusting sponge Crambe crambe (Schmidt, 1862), which is distributed widely throughout the shallow Mediterranean littoral. Examination of sponge patches in shaded and well-illuminated habitats showed that the degree of peripheral irregularity of the edges of a patch is directly related to patch size. This relationship is valid only for sponges of >100 mm2 in area. Photophilic and sciaphilous sponges display different growth forms. The pattern of growth is interpreted in terms of competition for space. The directional growth of sciaphilous sponges may be due to the presence of dominant neighbours that are good space competitors, and the irregular growth of photophilic sponges to the absence of such neighbours.  相似文献

The common Caribbean starfish Oreaster reticulatus (Linnaeus) feeds on sponges by everting its stomach onto a sponge and digesting the tissue, leaving behind the sponge skeleton. In the San Blas Islands, Republic of Panama, 54.2% of the 1549 starfish examined from February 1987 to June 1990 at eight sites were feeding, and 61.4% of these were feeding on sponges, representing 51 species. Sponges were fed on disproportionately heavily in comparison to their abundance, which was only 9.7% of available prey. In feeding choice experiments, 736 pieces of 34 species of common sponges from a variety of shallow-water habitats, and also 9 ind of a coral, were offered to starfish in individual underwater cages. Acceptance or rejection of sponge species was unambiguous for 31 of the 34 species, and there was a clear relationship between sponge acceptability and sponge habitat. Starfish ate 16 of 20 species that normally grow only on the reefs, but only 1 of 14 species that live in the seagrass meadows and rubble flats surrounding the reefs. The starfish live in the seagrass meadows and rubble flats, and avoid the reefs, and so the acceptable reef sponges are generally inaccessible until a storm fragments and transports them into starfish habitat. After Huricane Joan washed fragments of reef sponges into a seagrass meadow in October 1988, starfish consumed the edible species. When the seagrass meadow was experimentally seeded with tagged reef sponge fragments in June 1994, O. reticulatus consumed edible species and accumulated in the area seeded. Reef sponges that were living in a seagrass meadow, from which O. reticulatus had been absent for at least 4 yr (from 1978 to 1982), were eliminated when the starfish migrated into the area, and the sponges have been unable to recolonize up to June 1994. O. reticulatus feeding and habitat preferences appear to restrict distributions of many Caribbean reef sponge species to habitats without O. reticulatus and may have exerted significant selective pressure on defences of those sponges that live in O. reticulatus habitats.  相似文献

Sponge-feeding fishes of the West Indies   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
In an analysis of the stomach contents of 212 species of West Indian reef and inshore fishes, sponge remains were found in 21 species. In eleven of these, sponges comprised 6% or more of the stomach contents; it is assumed that these fishes feed intentionally on sponges. Sponges comprise over 95% of the food of angelfishes of the genus Holacanthus, over 70% of the food of species of the related genus Pomacanthus, and more than 85% of the food of the filefish, Cantherhines macrocerus. Lesser quantities of sponges are ingested by the remaining fish species. Fishes that feed on sponges belong to highly specialized teleost families, suggesting that this habit has evolved in geologically late time. The small number of fish species that concentrate on sponges as food suggests that the defensive characters of sponges—mineralized sclerites, noxious chemical substances, and tough fibrous components—are highly effective in discouraging predation. The two sponges most frequently eaten by fishes have a low percentage of siliceous spicules relative to organic matter, but among the 20 next most frequently consumed species no striking correlation occurs with respect to spicule content. Color and form of the sponge show no special correlation with frequency of occurrence in fish stomachs. Three species of fishes appear to concentrate on one species of sponge, but in these cases over 60% of the food taken consists of a variety of other organisms. Those fishes, more than half of whose diet consists of sponges, tend to sample a wide variety of species. No strong evidence is provided by our data that fish predation is a significant factor in limiting sponge distribution in the West Indian region.  相似文献

The association of sponges with microorganisms has been accepted to be a common feature of the phylum Porifera. Herein we describe the association between filamentous Archaea and three Mediterranean species of sponges from the family Axinellidae (Porifera: Demospongiae). Axinella damicornis, A. verrucosa and Axinella sp. harbor a high concentration of filamentous Archaea in the collagen that surrounds the siliceous spicules that form their skeleton. These Archaea have been found in every axinellid specimen studied, regardless of their environment and collection time. The morphology of the filaments has been studied using transmission electron microscopy, and they all show similar characteristics. Their nature has been determined by in situ hybridization experiments and by PCR amplification and sequencing of their 16S DNA. Each sponge species contains a single filamentous archaeal phylotype. The Archaea of the three sponges are closely related to each other and to the marine "group 1" crenarchaeotes. Our findings suggest that this newly described association could be defined as a symbiosis, where biochemical and/or metabolic relationships between the sponge hosts and their symbionts remain to be determined.  相似文献

A periodical survey of the growth of an intertidal encrusting sponge Halichondria okadai was conducted on a rocky intertidal shore on the Izu Peninsula, southern Japan. The area covered by each of 16 marked sponges was monitored, and the fusion and fission of specimens were recorded from June 1995 to June 1998. During the investigation, 15 of the original specimens managed to survive accompanying fusions or fissions and only one colony completely disappeared. Ten fusions and 23 fissions were observed in total. The maximum death rate during a semilunar period was 16.7% and cumulative mortality throughout the study period was 46.1%, indicating that the mortality of H. okadai is lower than that of other species previously reported. There was no particular seasonal pattern in the occurrences of fusion, fission and death of sponges. However, fissions were frequently observed in the latter half of the study period and were sometimes followed by fusions or death of specimens. Positive growth rates were often observed during warmer months, and specimens showed little growth or regression in winter. Seasonal patterns in surface area were thought to be related to seasonality in reproductive activity.  相似文献

The role played by the urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula, in the formation and persistence of barren areas dominated by encrusting coralline macroalgae is yet to be fully elucidated. This study, carried out in the NW Mediterranean (43° 30′N, 10° 20′E) between February 2005 and April 2006, investigated how the loss or density decrease in one or both urchin species influences the recovery of erect macroalgal stands (dominated by filamentous forms) at the margins of barren areas. At a depth of 4–6 m, three barren patches were assigned to each of the following treatments: (1) control (natural densities of A. lixula and P. lividus); (2) 50 % of the natural density of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (3) total removal of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (4) 50 % of the natural density of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (5) total removal of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (6) 50 % of the natural densities of both A. lixula and P. lividus; (7) total removal of both A. lixula and P. lividus. The effects of the herbivore treatments were evaluated either in the presence or the absence of encrusting corallines. The partial or total removal of A. lixula, P. lividus or both favored the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The presence of encrusting corallines reduced the development of these macroalgae. The results of this study suggest that a moderate decrease in the density of just one of the two species can decrease the ability of the herbivore assemblage to control the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The extent of barren areas appears, therefore, to be regulated by the outcome of density-dependent interactions between the two species of sea urchins.  相似文献

Ethyl acetate, chloroform, butanol, and methanol extracts from the aerial part of Peganum harmala were tested for antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the solid medium technique. Oxacillin, amoxicillin, ticarcillin, cefotaxim, and amphotericin were used as control agents. The antiviral activity was evaluated against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) strain AD-169 (ATCC Ref. VR 538) and Coxsackie B virus type 3 (CoxB-3) using a cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction assay. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using two tests: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging and ammonium thiocyanate methods. Among tested extracts; the chloroform extract displayed a higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. The butanol extract demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity. The methanol extract showed significant antiviral activity against CoxB-3 virus. The chloroform extract may be an important source of bactericidal compounds against Gram-positive bacteria.  相似文献

The diet of cavity sponges on the narrow fringing reefs of Curaçao, Caribbean was studied. The origin and resources of the bulk food of these sponges, i.e., dissolved organic matter (DOM), were identified using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. We found that phytoplankton and its derived DOM from the adjacent open sea and from reef overlying water is not the main source of food for most of the sponges examined nor is bacterioplankton. Interestingly, dual stable isotope signatures (δ13Corg, δ15Norg) and fatty acid biomarkers appoint coral mucus and organic matter derived from crustose coralline algae (CCA) as probable food sources for encrusting sponges. Mucus-derived DOM may contribute up to 66% to the diet of examined sponges based on results of dual isotope mixing model analysis. The contribution of CCA (as purported representative for benthic algae) was smaller with values up to 31%. Together, mucus- and CCA-derived substrates contributed for 48–73% to the diet of sponges. The presence of the exogenous fatty acid 20:4ω6 in sponges, which is abundant in coral mucus of Madracis mirabilis and in CCA, highlights these reef-derived resources as sources of nutrition for DOM feeding cavity sponges. The relatively high concentrations of exogenous 20:4ω6 in all sponges examined supports our hypothesis that the bulk of the food of the cavity sponge community is reef-derived. Our results imply that cavity sponges play an important role in conserving food and energy produced within the reef.  相似文献

This article reports for the first time the antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer activities of vilangin synthesised from embelin isolated from Embelia ribes berries. E. ribes is widely used as traditional herbal medicine in India. E. ribes is used as appetiser, carminative, anthelmintic, alexiteric, laxative and alterative. This plant is also used to treat tumour, ascites, bronchitis, mental diseases, dyspnoea, heart diseases, urinary discharges, jaundice, hemicrania, and worms in wounds. Here the major compound, embelin, was isolated from the fruits of E. ribes. Vilangin was synthesised by condensation of embelin with formaldehyde in acetic acid solution. The biological activity of vilangin is unknown so far. Hence, we studied antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer activities of vilangin. The minimum inhibitory concentration value of vilangin was 62.5 μg/mL against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhimurium. The radical scavenging activity was maximum at 1,000 μg/mL. Ferric reducing antioxidant power assay of vilangin showed a twofold higher value compared to the standard. Vilangin showed 61.95 % of cytotoxic activity in vitro against A549 lung adenocarcinoma cancer cell line at a dose of 500 μg/mL with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 400 μg/mL. Vilangin can thus be further tested as a new drug.  相似文献

Extracts from marine sponges collected in French Polynesia and along the Brittany coast (France) have been tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity. The bioactity is concentrated in Dendrilla sp., Homaxinella trachys, Hyrtios eubamma, Verongia aerophoba and Phakellia ventilabrum. The compound responsible for the activity of H. eubamma has been identified as puupehenone, while that of P. ventilabrum is due to a new sesquiteprenoid isonitrile. This study forms part of the Thèse 3e cycle of Ph. Massive specimens of Cliona viridis, collected off the coast of Blanes (North-Western Mediterranean Sea) in January 1987, were exposed to different light (natural day-night irradiance/constant darkness) and substrata (calcareous/siliceous) conditions to assess their influence on growth, survival and attachment rates. Sponges cultured under natural irradiance displayed higher growth rates with increasing temperature; those cultured in the dark did not respond to increased temperature, but adapted faster to laboratory conditions. Differences in growth rates between these two culture conditions are ascribed to the presence of a healthy symbiotical zooxanthellae population on individuals cultured under conditions of natural irradiance. Attachment rates of the cut sides of the sponges which were in direct contact with the substratum, also increased with increasing temperature, whilst sponge survival was not significantly dependent on temperature. The chemical nature of the substratum clearly affected survival rates, which were higher on calcified than on siliceous substrata.  相似文献

Fine structural analysis of living tissue of the sclerosponges Ceratoporella nicholsoni (Hickson) and Stromatospongia norae Hartman, collected near Discovery Bay, Jamaica, between 1984 and 1986, was carried out using transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). The thick dermal membrane of these sponges is covered by exopinacocytes having a T shape in sections perpendicular to the surface. A dense, complex glycocalyx is produced at the surface of these cells. Choanocyte chambers are diplodal and unusually small. The inhalant and exhalant canals of both species are characterized by the presence of valvules, made by transverse lamellipodial processes of the endopinacocytes lining them. An abundant and diversified bacterial community occupies almost 20% of the mesohyl. A single layer of active basopinacocytes lines the mesohyl at the interface between the living tissue and the aragonitic skeleton. Basopinacocytes are presumed to be precursors of the irregular fibrillar organic matrix found in the aragonitic skeleton. Sclerocytes and spongocytes are abundant in the vicinity of the siliceous spicules. Typical lophocytes releasing smooth collagen fibrils are common in the dermal membrane as well as in the choanosome where they can be grouped in bundles. Uniquely, C. nicholsoni elaborates rough intercellular fibrils characterized by periodically spaced thickenings. The endolithic algae Ostreobium sp. is present in the most apical zones of the aragonitic skeleton, but does not seem to interfere with its development. The striking micromorphological resemblances between both species are discussed and compared to demosponges.Contribution no. 472 from the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, University of the West Indies, Discovery Bay, Jamaica, West Indies  相似文献

Previous studies on the rocky intertidal shores of the Bay of Panama indicate that for many sessile and mobile organisms holes and crevices are important refuges from consumers. To study the dynamics of these hole-dwelling species assemblages, we devised a method allowing repetitive, non-destructive sampling and species manipulations in artificial holes. These are fiberglass sleeves with flanges at the outer edge that are inserted into receptacles made of quick-setting concrete. Predator and herbivore manipulations include: fences excluding slow-moving benthic consumers, bars across hole mouths restricting entry of large fishes and homogeneous (shelterless) surfaces created around a treatment decreasing abundance of small crabs. This design has withstood the rigors of two wet seasons in Panama. Results from two sites in Panama indicate that colonization occurs rapidly (6–7 months) in holes established in mid dry season. Encrusting fleshy algae (Ralfsia sp.) and ephemeral green algae (Cladophora spp.) colonize first and are succeeded by encrusting species of coralline algae, bryozoans and colonial tunicates and by erect fleshy red algae. Where consumers are present, encrusting corallines predominate; without consumers, bryozoans, tunicates and erect algae are more abundant. Zonation patterns develop within the holes, with the desiccation/heattolerant Ralfsia sp. dominating at the outer edges. With increasing deph, encrusting coralline algae, bryozoans and colonial tunicates reach their respective peak abundances. In contrast to the high variability observed among naturally occurring holes, replicates of each treatment tend to be similar. Between-treatment and between-site comparisons are less so. The naturally-occurring high level of small-scale patchiness is thus presumably due to variation in recruitment and in the local (microspatial) consumer regime. Substratum heterogeneity is therefore directly and indirectly important in maintaining a high local diversity in this community. As in other studies, consumers or disturbances are key factors in regulating patterns of community structure. More experiments of longer duration are necessary to ascertain the relative importances of consumers/disturbance and competition in controlling such assemblages.  相似文献

Although the genetic structure of many populations of marine organisms show little deviation from panmixia, in those marine species with limited larval dispersal, patterns of microgeographic genetic differentiation may be common. The octocoral Briareum asbestinum should show local population differentiation because colonies reproduce asexually by fragmentation, most matings occur between colonies in very close proximity, and the sexually produced larvae and sperm appear to disperse only short distances. Variability in secondary chemistry of individual B. asbestinum colonies from different populations in close proximity also suggests local population differentiation. We determined the genetic composition of local populations by surveying allozyme variation of three shallow and two deep populations within a 300 m2 area at San Salvador Island, Bahamas and at a site 161 km away on Little San Salvador, Bahamas in July 1990. As B. asbestinum occurs as either an erect branching form or an encrusting mat often at the same sites, we sampled both morphs to examine the extent of genetic exchange between them. Five of 21 loci were polymorphic and most populations showed a deficit of heterozygotes. Allele frequencies differed significantly between morphs at each site where they occurred together. The mean genetic distance (D=0.065) between morphs is consistent with the interpretation that the two morphs are genetically isolated. Despite the close spatial proximity of the San Salvador populations, both the branching and encrusting morphs showed significant genetic heterogeneity among neighboring populations. Similarly, pooled allelic frequencies for samples collected from the islands of San Salvador and Little San Salvador differed significantly at 1 locus for the branching morph and at 3 out of 5 loci for the encrusting morph.  相似文献

This article describes ecological and biological differences between two morphs of the Red Sea fire coral Millepora dichotoma. The species is divided into two main morphs: branching and encrusting, which were found to differ both in color and morphology. Each morph has two or more sub-morphs. A total of 372 M. dichotoma colonies were examined in a census at two study sites in the Gulf of Elat. Colony size and abundance of the two morphs were found to differ significantly between sites. Experimental examination of each morph's morphological plasticity revealed different growth rates and difference in growth plasticity between the branching and the encrusting morph. Most of the fragments from the branching colonies (94%) attached to experimentally placed Plexiglas substrate, compared with much less attachment by the encrusting fragments (11%). The growth form of the branching morph on the Plexiglas switched to encrusting, spreading over and covering the substrate. When the new encrusting colony reached the edge of this substrate, it started to produce tips, and returned to growth in the classic branching form. The encrusting morph did not change its growth form. Following attachment of the original fragments of the branching morph to the substrate, 8.1% of them produced new tips. When the original branches were removed, after converting to encrusting growth form, 19% of the fragments produced new tips. The capsule size of nematocysts of the two morphs was also significantly different (t-test, P<0.05). Molecular data (ITS region) clearly demonstrate that these two M. dichotoma morphs differ considerably. Molecular evidence (srRNA) from the symbiotic zooxanthellae also shows a different pattern of clades in the hosts. The ecological, biological and molecular data thus attest to the two morphs being distinguishable. Contrary to previous reports, we consequently suggest that the two morphs of M. dichotoma found in the Gulf of Elat are actually two distinct species.Communicated by O. ● All 1,4-naphthoquinone hybrids exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. ● Presence of a hydroxyl group on aromatic B-ring of juglone was crucial for activity. ● Juglone can cause DNA damage by producing ROS and downregulation of RecA. ● Juglone has the potential to become a disinfectant. The diverse and large-scale application of disinfectants posed potential health risks and caused ecological damage during the 2019-nCoV pandemic, thereby increasing the demands for the development of disinfectants based on natural products, with low health risks and low aquatic toxicity. In the present study, a few natural naphthoquinones and their derivatives bearing the 1,4-naphthoquinone skeleton were synthesized, and their antibacterial activity against selected bacterial strains was evaluated. In vitro antibacterial activities of the compounds were investigated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Under the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ≤ 0.125 μmol/L for juglone (1a), 5,8-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (1f), and 7-methyl-5-acetoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (3c), a strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus was observed. All 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives exhibited a strong antibacterial activity, with MIC values ranging between 15.625 and 500 μmol/L and EC50 values ranging between 10.56 and 248.42 μmol/L. Most of the synthesized compounds exhibited strong antibacterial activities against S. aureus. Among these compounds, juglone (1a) showed the strongest antibacterial activity. The results from mechanistic investigations indicated that juglone, a natural naphthoquinone, caused cell death by inducing reactive oxygen species production in bacterial cells, leading to DNA damage. In addition, juglone could reduce the self-repair ability of bacterial DNA by inhibiting RecA expression. In addition to having a potent antibacterial activity, juglone exhibited low cytotoxicity in cell-based investigations. In conclusion, juglone is a strong antibacterial agent with low toxicity, indicating that its application as a bactericidal agent may be associated with low health risks and aquatic toxicity.  相似文献

A series of sixteen 2-oxo-3-(arylimino) indolin-1-yl)-N-aryl acetamide derivatives were synthesized, characterized by physical and spectral data (IR, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and mass spectrometry), and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against various pathogenic microorganisms. Some of the synthesized compounds showed promising antibacterial and antifungal activities, the best being 2-(3-(4-chlorophenylimino)-2-oxoindolin-1-yl)-N-(3-methoxyphenyl) acetamide.  相似文献
