The response of a natural phytoplankton assemblage to different concentrations of Zn(2+) was evaluated by means of a static laboratory bioassay. Aliquots of surface water, taken in autumn from a non-polluted point of the Reconquista River (Buenos Aires, Argentia), were incubated in mineral nutrient media containing 2.5, 10 or 25 mg litre(-1) of Zn(2+) (as zinc chloride). The comparative structure and dynamics of the communities were followed through periodic physico-chemical and biological analyses of samples taken during 24 days of incubation. Under the experimental conditions of the bioassays, the existence of several Zn(2+) tolerant algal species was shown: the most important of them were Chlorella vulgaris Beij. (Chlorophyceae, Chlorococcales), Nitzschia palea (Kütz.) Smith and Gomphonema parvulum (Kütz.) Kütz. (Bacillariophyceae). It was also demonstrated that the algal responses to Zn(2+) were selectively concentration dependent: at 2.5 and 10 mg litre(-1) a stimulatory effect was observed in the diatoms; at 25 mg litre(-1), diatom toxicity occurred. In contrast, Chlorophyceae growth was stimulated at the maximal Zn level. In general, the diversity, richness and equitability of the community were adversely affected by Zn in a concentration-dependent fashion.  相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope Phytoplankton, as a first step in trophic cascades of lakes, can be a good indicator of trophic states, considering that every environmental change affects this community and many species of this community are sensitive to changes, and that they response very quickly. In this study, we tried to assess and predict the trophic state of Lake Skadar according to phytoplankton data.Methods Water samples were collected using Ruttner sampling bottle. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, ph, conductivity and transparence were measured in situ using portable equipment. Nutrients and chlorophyll a were measured using standard spectrophotometric methods. A determination of phytoplankton species was performed using relevant keys and the counting of cells was performed using sedimentation methods.Results and Discussion The species composition of Lake Skadar revealed 95 taxa, with Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae being represented best. According to an average chlorophyll a concentration of 5.9 µg/l, Lake Skadar belongs to the mesotrophic level of the trophic scale. Developed prediction equation for chlorophyll a revealed a good prediction (R2=0.71) and the parameter Secchi depth was primarily correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Trophic state indices derived from chlorophyll a and transparency, were close together, but both were below the phosphorous index. Values of trophic state indices rank the Lake Skadar as being mesotrophic. This study also showed that indices of diversity based on phytoplankton are weak indicators of trophic status and that they can well characterize only differences between assemblages and associations. According to calculated saprobic indices (ranging from 1.5 to 2.15), Lake Skadar is on betamesosaprobic level of saprobity, which means that it is moderately polluted with organic compounds. Conclusions Total phosphorus is not the main limiting factor for the phytoplankton community in Lake Skadar. Disagreements between chlorophyll and the transparency index, on the one hand, and the total phosphorus index, on the other, suggest that the phytoplankton in Lake Skadar is probably limited by other factors than phosphorus, such as nitrogen, toxic substances or intense zooplankton grazing. According to the majority of investigated parameters and indices derived from phytoplankton data, Lake Skadar is mesotrophic, with tendencies toward eutrophic levels during the summer period. Recommendations and Outlook Long-term monitoring is required for a better estimation of state and the conditions of Lake Skadar. Further studies on factors influencing the phytoplankton community, especially zooplankton grazing and toxic substances, which were not included in this study, should be continued in the future to improve the efficiency of phytoplankton usage in estimating the ecological and trophic conditions of Lake Skadar.  相似文献

Reservoirs are an important source of water supply in many densely populated areas in southeast China. Phytoplankton plays an important role in maintaining the structure and function of these reservoir ecosystems. Understanding of seasonal succession in phytoplankton communities and its driving factors is essential for effective water quality management in drinking-water reservoirs. In this study, water samples were collected monthly at the surface layers of riverine, transitional, and lacustrine zones from May 2010 to April 2011 in Tingxi Reservoir, southeast China. The phytoplankton showed distinct seasonal shifts in community structure at both taxonomic and functional levels. Cyanophyta was the dominant group in summer, especially species of Raphidiopsis in May and Aphanizomenon in June, and cyanobacterial dominance was promoted by both warmer conditions and excessive nutrients loading. Cyanophyta was gradually replaced by Cryptophyta (e.g., Chroomonas caudata) in abundance and by Bacillariophyta (Fragilaria sp. or Synedra sp. and Melosira sp.) in biomass with decreasing temperature. It appeared that seasonal shifts in phytoplankton composition were closely related to climate, nutrient status, and hydrology in this reservoir. Our partial RDA results clearly showed that water temperature and nutrients (TN and TP) were the most critical factors driving phytoplankton community shift in the abundance and biomass data, respectively. Further, with the global warming, cyanobacterial blooms may increase in distribution, duration, and intensity. In our study, the abundance and biomass of cyanobacteria had significant and positive correlations with temperature and phosphorus. Therefore, a stricter limit on nutrient input should be a priority in watershed management to protect drinking water from the effects of cyanobacterial blooms, especially in high-temperature period.  相似文献

The relative biomass of autotrophs (vascular plants, macroalgae, microphytobenthos, phytoplankton) in shallow aquatic ecosystems is thought to be controlled by nutrient inputs and underwater irradiance. Widely accepted conceptual models indicate that this is the case both in marine and freshwater systems. In this paper we examine four case studies and test whether these models generally apply. We also identify other complex interactions among the autotrophs that may influence ecosystem response to cultural eutrophication. The marine case studies focus on macroalgae and its interactions with sediments and vascular plants. The freshwater case studies focus on interactions between phytoplankton, epiphyton, and benthic microalgae. In Waquoit Bay, MA (estuary), controlled experiments documented that blooms of macroalgae were responsible for the loss of eelgrass beds at nutrient-enriched locations. Macroalgae covered eelgrass and reduced irradiance to the extent that the plants could not maintain net growth. In Hog Island Bay, VA (estuary), a dense lawn of macroalgae covered the bottom sediments. There was reduced sediment-water nitrogen exchange when the algae were actively growing and high nitrogen release during algal senescence. In Lakes Brobo (West Africa) and Okeechobee (FL), there were dramatic seasonal changes in the biomass and phosphorus content of planktonic versus attached algae, and these changes were coupled with changes in water level and abiotic turbidity. Deeper water and/or greater turbidity favored dominance by phytoplankton. In Lake Brobo there also was evidence that phytoplankton growth was stimulated following a die-off of vascular plants. The case studies from Waquoit Bay and Lake Okeechobee support conceptual models of succession from vascular plants to benthic algae to phytoplankton along gradients of increasing nutrients and decreasing under-water irradiance. The case studies from Hog Island Bay and Lake Brobo illustrate additional effects (modified sediment-water nutrient fluxes, allelopathy or nutrient release during plant senescence) that could play a role in ecosystem response to nutrient stress.  相似文献

Effects of pulp mill chlorate on Baltic Sea algae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The long-term effects of pulp mill chlorate on different algal species of the Baltic Sea were studied in land-based model ecosystems simulating the littoral zone. Brown algae (Phaeophyta) exhibited an extraordinarily high sensitivity to chlorate and pulp mill effluents containing chlorate. All brown algal species ceased growth or showed major signs of toxicity at all concentrations tested, down to microgram per litre levels. EC50 levels for growth of Fucus vesiculosus were about 80-100 microg ClO3- litre(-1). Blue-green algae (Cyanophyta) were not deleteriously affected nor were green algae (Chlorophyta). The perennial and annual species of red algae (Rhodophyta) were also unaffected by the effluents. Diatoms did not show any sensitivity and phytoplankton (fresh- and brackish water) were particularly insensitive. A phanerogam, Zostera marina was also unaffected by the treatments.  相似文献

The distribution of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) and P fractions in sediment cores and the relationship between them were studied in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Lake Taihu). Sediment cores were collected from four sites, characterized by different degrees of eutrophication in June 2004. Sediment P was fractionated into Fe/Al-P, Ca-P, organic P (OP), inorganic P (IP) and total P (TP). The former two species made the largest contribution to the sediment P pool. Results show that trophic status and hydrological conditions have great impact on the APA of the sediments. The order of the APA in sediments was conjectured to be: macrophyte dominated lake>transitional lake>algal dominated lake. APA profiles follow a similar downcore decreasing trend. There was a positive relationship between the APA and the TP, IP. The multiple linear regression equation of the APA and P fractions is: APA=-97+0.768TP-0.985Fe/Al-P.  相似文献

Chlorophyll a, freshweight biomass, ash-free dry weight, cell numbers, species richness, community carbon uptake and species-specific carbon uptake were used to monitor the impact of atrazine (2 chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) on an in situ, enclosed periphyton community. Atrazine concentrations ranging from 0.08 to 1.56 mg litre(-1) were used during the 2 years of study. In both 1982 and 1983, there was a shift from a chlorophyte- to a diatom-dominated community. In 1982 the cyanobacterium Cylindrospermum stagnale and the chlorophyte Tetraspora cylindrica developed isolated colonies in the 1.56 mg litre(-1) treatment, indicating resistance to atrazine at this concentration. After atrazine exposure, community productivity was reduced by 21% to 82% in the low to high exposures, respectively. After day 21 productivity returned to control levels. It was shown, using track autoradiography, that the productivities of the larger algae Mougeotia sp., Oedogonium sp., Tolypothrix limbata and Epithemia turgida were the most affected, with reductions of 74.3% to 93.1% that of the controls. All the biotic measures indicated reduced growth after herbicide exposure.  相似文献

The microscopic green alga, Chlorella pyrenoidosa was grown in settled and activated sewage under two different culture systems, batch and semi-continuous. Good growth was obtained in both types of wastewater and the algal production was comparable to and even higher than that found in commercial Bristol medium. The semi-continuous culture supported more growth than the batch system. There was a close relationship between algal growth and the amount of nutrient removed from both settled and activated sewage. A more rapid drop in NH(4)(+)-N was found in settle rather than activated sewage. The NH(4)(+)-N of settled sewage dropped from its initial 27 to 5 mg litre(-1) in both culture systems. On the other hand, the NO(3)(-)-N of activated sewage started to decrease from Day 2 onwards and the final NO(3)(-)-N concentration was less than 1 mg litre(-1) (over 90% removal efficiency). The amount of total inorganic nitrogen being reduced due to algal culture was similar in both types of sewage. The changes of phosphate content followed the same trend in both sewage, the P concentration increased slightly in the first two days then decreased, especially in the semi-continuous cultures. The final ortho-P in the sewage treated by Chlorella in semi-continuous culture was less than 5 mg litre(-1) (about 62% reduction). Such removal efficiency was slightly lower than those reported in previous studies. In general, the semi-continuous algal culture appeared to be a more suitable and efficient way for wastewater treatment than the batch system. With respect to the total reduction of wastewater inorganic N and P by means of Chlorella cells, there was no significant difference between settled and activated sewage.  相似文献

The antifouling herbicide Irgarol 1051 has been detected in recent years in numerous estuaries, marinas, harbors and coastal areas, and in some harbors on Lake Geneva, but so far only a few studies have investigated the ecotoxicological effects of this compound on microalgae. The purpose of this study was to assess the ecotoxicological impact of Irgarol 1051 on the algal communities of Lake Geneva, and to compare its phytotoxicity to that of the common triazine herbicide, atrazine. We investigated the response of phytoplanktonic and periphytonic algal communities and single-species isolates collected from the lake, to the PS II inhibitor Irgarol 1051 (growth, proxy of photosynthetic activity and community structure). A short-term bioassay was developed based on in vivo fluorescence, together with nanocosm experiments with natural algal communities, and single-species tests on algal strains isolated from the lake. The toxicity of Irgarol 1051 towards periphyton and phytoplankton was shown to be higher than that of atrazine. Indications of the tolerance induced by this triazine in the algal communities of Lake Geneva, suggests that even at the levels of contamination reported in some parts of the lake, Irgarol 1051 is already exerting selection pressure. Information about sensitivities, selection and tolerance from laboratory experiments are used to explain the observations in natural microalgal communities from the lake.  相似文献

Drawing reliable conclusions on changes in the trophic state of various subareas of the Baltic Sea is problematic, in large part because the monitoring of productivity parameters exhibiting high natural variability is based on sparse sampling. This emphasizes the importance of long-term data sets. Here we present a 30-year chlorophyll alpha data set from the western Gulf of Finland. The trophic state of the study area showed an increasing trend in the 1970s and 1980s manifested mainly as strengthened vernal blooms. This trend did not continue in the 1990s, and the seasonal phytoplankton biomass maxima since then has begun to show some bias toward the late summer. The changes in seasonal maxima of phytoplankton blooms probably reflect i) decreased availability of N suppressing the magnitude of the vernal bloom, which increases the P reserves for the summer, and ii) enhanced internal P loading, which further increases the summer P reserves.  相似文献

Lake Tasaul on the Black Sea coast is highly eutrophic, but not strongly contaminated (heavy metals, PAHs, and organochlorine pesticides). Cyanophytes dominate phytoplankton by 67–94% and form frequent algal blooms. High primary production (up to 270 mg Cass/m2.h) and algal biomass (maximum chlorophyll a concentration 417 μg/l) may be controlled by light, as Secchi depth is often below 1 m. The main tributary, Casimcea River, provides high quantities of suspended matter and about 3 tons TP/year and 660 tons TN/year. Based on chemical and biological analysis as well as fishery investigations, we provide recommendations for Lake Tasaul rehabilitation.  相似文献

A winter wheat field plot experiment was conducted on two types of paddy soils, from November, 2000 to June, 2001 to assess P losses to its surrounding watercourses by runoff in the Taihu Lake Region. Commercial NPK compound fertilizer and single superphosphate fertilizer were applied to furnish 0, 20, 80, and 160 kg P ha(-1). The experiments consisted of six replicates of each treatment in Changshu site and four replicates in Anzhen site, with a plot size of 5x6 m2 in a randomized block design. Results revealed that the average concentration of dissolved P (DP), particulate P (PP), and total P (TP) in runoff water during the winter season was 0.13, 0.90 and 1.04 mg P l(-1) respectively, from P20 plots in Anzhen site. While it was 0.67, 1.08 and 1.75 mg P l(-1) respectively, from P20 plots in Changshu site. The seasonal TP load (mass loss) from P20 plot ranged from a low of 290.88 g P ha(-1)season(-1) to a high of 483.54 g P ha(-1)season(-1), with a mean of 382.29 g P ha(-1)season(-1) in Anzhen, but from 444.92 to 752.21 g P ha(-1)season(-1), with a mean of 539.13 g P ha(-1)season(-1) in Changshu. Both in Anzhen and Changshu PP represented a major portion of the TP lost in runoff, the average PP/TP was about more than 80% in P0 and P20 plot, but it was decreased with the increase of P rate. The average seasonal P loads (DP, PP, and TP) in Changshu were greater than in Anzhen although runoff volume in Anzhen (45 mm season(-1)) was more than in Changshu (36 mm season(-1)). This was probably associated with the differences of soil physical and chemical properties between the two sites. Phosphate fertilizer rate significantly affected P concentrations and P loads by runoff. Both the mean concentrations and the average seasonal P loads from the P80 plots were lower than from the P160 plots, but obviously higher than from the P20 and P0 plots. There was no significant difference found between the P20 plots and the P0 plots both in Anzhen and Changshu sites. It indicated that P loads by runoff would be greatly increased in 5-10 years due to the accumulation of soil P if 20 kg P ha(-1) applied each wheat season in this area.  相似文献

Tropical rain forests play important roles in the global carbon cycle. We report a six-year eddy covariance carbon flux campaign in a primary tropical seasonal rain forest in southwest China. An unexpected seasonal pattern of net ecosystem carbon exchange was detected, with carbon lost during the rainy season and stored in the dry season. Strong seasonality of ecosystem respiration was suggested to primarily account for this seasonal pattern. The annual net uptake of CO2 by the forest varied from 0.98 to 2.35 metric tons of carbon per hectare between 2003 and 2008. 6-year averaged sink strength was 1.68 metric tons of carbon per hectare.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation and toxicity of zinc in Cladophora glomerata from two populations in the River Roding, Essex, UK, were examined in experimental laboratory flowing-water channels. Plants were subjected to zinc concentrations ranging from 0 to 4.0 mg litre(-1) at current velocities of 20-33 cm s(-1) for up to 3 h. Zinc in algal tissue was then quantified and toxicity was assessed by the ability of the alga to grow in a recovery medium after the experimental treatment. There was little difference in zinc bioaccumulation between Cladophora from the site showing mild organic pollution and that from the site subjected to considerable inputs from urban and motorway runoff. Uptake of zinc increased with increasing concentration in the test solution and was linear and proportional up to 0.4 mg litre(-1). Three stages of uptake were identified with the most dramatic accumulation occurring in the first 10 min. Experimental concentration factors ranged from 1.9-5.2 x 10(3), which were in agreement with those previously obtained in the field. Cellular damage was evident in Cladophora subjected to 0.4 mg litre(-1) zinc, and this increased with increasing zinc concentration, thus leading to the conclusion that, at times, the levels of zinc found in the river could be potentially damaging.  相似文献

The distribution and interactions of phytoplankton and 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated using canonical correspondence analysis in autumn in the Qinhuai River, Nanjing, China. Concentrations of PCBs in water and algal samples ranged from 33.78 to 144.84 ng/L and from 0.21 to 19.66 ng/L (0.06 to 3.04 ng/mg biomass), respectively. The predominant residual species of PCBs in water samples were tri- through hexachlorobiphenyls, and the predominant residuals in algae were tri-, tetra-, and heptachlorobiphenyls. The degree of eutrophication affected phytoplankton composition and PCB bioaccumulation, and led to sample site- and algal species specificity of PCB residues in the study area. Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Euglenophyta had strong capacities to take up PCBs, whereas Cyanophyta was less involved in the transfer of these compounds. Bioaccumulation of PCBs by algae may be affected by water quality, chlorination, phytoplankton composition, and the structure of the PCBs and the algal cell walls.  相似文献

湖泊富营养化是中国目前及今后相当长一段时期内的重大水环境问题,研究蓝藻水华治理的关键技术具有重要的生态和环境意义.2005年9月在南京玄武湖开展了化学除藻剂治理蓝藻水华的实验研究,除藻剂平均用量为26.87 g/m2,治理后实验区藻类总量下降了82.8%;水体各项理化指标得到一定改善,但停止洒药后部分指标回升;浮游动物未出现显著变化.实验结果表明,除藻剂可能在短时间内除抑蓝藻,但不能从根本上解决湖泊富营养化问题.  相似文献

Acidification can affect aquatic organisms directly through hydrogen ion toxicity, and indirectly through disrupted food web dynamics and altered abiotic conditions. Field populations from selected taxa were studied during the Little Rock Lake whole-basin acidification experiment to illustrate patterns whose timing suggests direct (i.e. immediate) or indirect (i.e. delayed or non-uniform) responses to pH change. As the treatment basin was acidified to pH 5.6, 5.2 and 4.7, immediate changes consistent with a direct pH response were observed for species representing several trophic levels. For other taxa (e.g. littoral invertebrates associated with filamentous algal mats, several species of pelagic zooplankton), indirect mechanisms induced by food web changes were more likely explanations for abundance patterns. The results presented here suggest that the responses of aquatic ecosystems to acidification involve a complex interplay between direct pH effects and subsequent indirect interactions.  相似文献

Several models of varying complexity have been used to predict pollutant concentrations in the higher levels of the food web from those in lower levels, but the role of the biomagnification process in aquatic food chains is still controversial. We used the fugacity-based approach to verify the transfer of PCBs through the pelagic food chain of Lake Iseo (N. Italy), sampling several zebra mussel specimens and some fish belonging of different trophic levels. The zebra mussel seems to be a suitable starting species for modelling the bioaccumulation process through the trophic web, not only because its physiological characteristics and population size do not change much with time (as do algae and zooplankton) but also because it takes up toxicants exclusively from the water, as shown by the application of two predictive trophic models commonly used. The data provided by one of those models were in good agreement with our experimental data on fish in Lake Iseo, that show a not negligible uptake from food for the top predator species (pike and perch) with an increase of about three times in comparison with the PCB levels measured in the zebra mussel specimens.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the toxicity of three organophosphorous pesticides, chlorpyrifos, terbufos and methamidophos, to three indigenous algal species isolated from local rivers and algal mixtures. The diatom Nitzschia sp. (0.30–1.68 mg L?1 of EC50 -the estimated concentration related to a 50% growth reduction) and the cyanobacteria Oscillatoria sp. (EC50 of 0.33–7.99 mg L?1) were sensitive to single pesticide treatment and the chlorophyta Chlorella sp. was the most tolerant (EC50 of 1.29–41.16 mg L?1). In treatment with the mixture of three pesticides, Chlorella sp. became the most sensitive alga. The antagonistic joint toxic effects on three indigenous algae and algal mixtures were found for most of the two pesticide mixtures. The results suggested that mixture of pesticides might induce the detoxification mechanisms more easily than the single pesticide. The synergistic interactions between terbufos and methamidophos to algal mixtures and between methamidophos and chlorpyrifos to Nitzschia sp. indicated methamidophos might act as a potential synergist. Differential sensitivity of three families of algae to these pesticides might result in changes in the algal community structures after river water has been contaminated with different pesticides, posing great ecological risk on the structure and functioning of the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献
