Following observations of mass spawning of hermatypic corals on the Great Barrier Reef in 1981 and 1982, spawning dates were successfully predicted and documented at five reefs on the Central and Northern Great Barrier Reef in 1983. During the predicted times, 105 species from 36 genera and 11 families were observed to spawn. Of these, 15 species were shown to have an annual gametogenic cycle. All but two of the species observed during mass spawnings shed gametes which underwent external fertilization and development. Synchronous spawning was observed both within and between the five reefs studied, which were separated by as much as 5° of latitude (500 km) or almost a quarter of the length of the Great Barrier Reef. The mass spawning of corals took place on only a few nights of the year, between the full and lastquarter moon in late spring. Maturation of gametes coincided with rapidly rising spring sea temperatures. Lunar and diel cycles may provide cues for the synchronization of gamete release in these species. The hour and night on which the greatest number of species and individuals spawned coincided with low-amplitude tides. Multispecific synchronous spawning, or mass spawning, of scleractinian and some alcyonacean corals represents a phenomenon which is, so far, unique in both marine and terrestrial communities.  相似文献

We compared densities, distributions and size frequencies of massive corals in the genus Porites on five relatively exposed, mid-shelf reefs (50 km offshore) in the central Great Barrier Reef with those on a sheltered inshore reef (10 km offshore). Data included various transect and mapping studies between 1984 and 1990, estimates of size-dependent damage from the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci, estimated densities of herbivorous sea urchins (potential predators of juveniles), and observations of size-specific effects of tropical cyclones. Assemblages of Porites spp. on mid-shelf reefs were dominated by small colonies (2 to 10 cm diam) established either from planula larvae or from small tissue remnants that had survived A. planci predation in the early to mid-1980s. Large colonies (up to 10 m diam) were scarce, except for localized aggregations on terraces at the base of reef slopes (6 to 12 m deep). Extensive space suitable for settlement by coral larvae can be attributed to recurrent cyclones and A. planci outbreaks. Despite low sea urchin predation, the slowly growing Porites juveniles are likely to die from overgrowth by numerous, much faster growing corals. On the sheltered inshore reef, the coral community was dominated by very large (>5 m diam) Porites colonies, several centuries old; recruitment was mainly by fragmentation of large colonies; there was little space available for settlement, and probabilities of juvenile mortality from grazing urchins were high. Differences in settlement and early survival of Porites spp. are exacerbated by different regimes of storm damage. A model is proposed that links wave climate with the size and age reached by corals before dislodgement by storm waves, and which is consistent with observed densities and size-frequency distributions of Porites in sheltered and exposed areas.  相似文献

The hemolymph of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus was hyperosmotic during 20-10-20 S and 30-10-30 S diurnal cycles. The hemolymph became isosmotic at 26 S and hyposmotic at 28 S in the 10-30-10 S diurnal cycle. Hemolymph Na+ was hyperionic to seawater throughout all cycles. Hemolymph Cl- was hyperionic below 24 S and either isionic or hypoionic from 24 to 30 S. Hemolymph K+ concentrations were hyperionic below 26 S and either isionic or hypoionic from 26 to 30 S. Hemolymph Mg++ values were hypoionic over the experimental salinity range (10 to 30). Hemolymph ninhydrin-positive substances (NPS) levels were directly related to ambient salinity.  相似文献

Tridacna gigas (L.) populations were sampled from 13 locations throughout the west Pacific in 1990–1991 and screened for allozyme variation at seven polymorphic loci. Significant genetic differences were found between the few large stocks of T. gigas remaining in the world. Cluster analysis identified two major regional groups of populations: a Central Pacific group consisting of Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, and a West Pacific group comprising all other populations. Within the latter group, the Great Barrier Reef populations were significantly differentiated from those in the Solomon Islands. The main routes of gene flow did not run parallel with known major surface currents as might be expected, but crossed them. Gene exchange was limited east-west between the Central and West Pacific groups and the GBR and the Solomon Islands. The lack of correspondence between the major surface currents and the routes of gene flow suggests that the genetic structure of T. gigas reflects historical patterns of migration that no longer occur, rather than presentday dispersal. These findings raise fundamental questions concerning the origin and maintenance of genetic diversity in Pacific faunas, and have important implications for the mariculture and conservation of T. gigas.  相似文献

This study was undertaken in 1981 to determine whether there were major variations in potential rates of nitrogen fixation on apparently bare coralline substrate from reefs across the continental shelf of the central Great Barrier Reef. Nitrogen fixation, measured as rates of ethylene production (nmol cm-2h-1), was significantly lower on substrata from two inner-shelf reefs, (0.46 and 1.07) than on two middle-shelf reefs (2.10 and 2.97) and on two outer-shelf reefs (3.20 and 3.81). By contrast, algal biomass (mg cm-2) on experimental substrate was significantly higher on inner-shelf reefs (80.8 and 59.4) than on middleshelf (27.1 and 23.8) and outer-shelf reefs (26.4 and 22.4). The rate of nitrogen fixation was positively correlated with the proportion of bare substratum and significantly higher concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen were found in waters over the reefs than in water flowing onto those reefs. The abundance of algal-grazing fishes was reported previously to be significantly lower on inner-shelf reefs. It is suggested that this cross-shelf variation in the activity of algal-grazing fishes may be a determinant of the observed cross-shelf variations in potential nitrogen fixation.Contribution No. 233 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Nitrogen excretion rates of demersal macrozooplankton were measured together with nitrogen concentrations in the water column and sediments in lagoons of Heron Reef and One Tree Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, during August and November 1991. Excretion rates increased with body weight, and weight-specific excretion rates of the demersal macrozooplankton were comparable to those of pelagic zooplankton and meiofauna in the Great Barrier Reef. Values of demersal macrozooplankton abundance from previous studies and excretion rates from this study were combined to estimate fluxes of ammonium from demersal macrozooplankton in coral reef lagoons. The estimated fluxes in the water column and sediments were 12 M NH4 m-2 d-1 and 34 M NH4 m-2d-1, respectively. These fluxes were compared with reported fluxes of ammonium in coral reef lagoons in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The estimated flux from the demersal macrozooplankton in the water column was 29 and 9% of those reported for microheterotroph regeneration and phytoplankton utilization, respectively. It was 10% of the reported advective flux during periods of low advection and 13% of the maximum efflux from sediments computed from diffusion models. The estimated flux from the demersal macrozooplankton in the sediments exceeded those reported for meiofauna, and was 5 to 32% and 2 to 13% of those reported for ammonification and utilization in sediments, respectively. The potential importance of demersal macrozooplankton in mediating sediment-water column exchanges in the absence of diffusive effluxes and when they swarm is discussed.  相似文献

The roles of copepod sensory systems in the recognition of food were investigated using the Bugwatcher, a video-computer system designed to track and describe quantitatively the swimming patterns of aquatic organisms. The swimming behavior of the copepodPseudocalanus minutus in the presence of phytoplankton is characterized by a decrease in average swimming speed and an increase in pause behaviors compared to its swimming behavior in filtered seawater. Copepods exposed to chemosensory stimulation alone (filtered phytoplankton exudate) exhibited an increase in average swimming speed and an increase in the number of burst swimming behaviors. When exposed to a novel, non-food chemosensory stimulus (morpholine), no change in swimming behavior was observed unless the copepods had been conditioned to this odor in the presence of phytoplankton. Copepods exposed to mechanosensory stimulation alone (plastic spheres) exhibited a decrease in swimming speed and an increase in pause behaviors. When exposed to both forms of stimulation simultaneously (phytoplankton exudate and plastic spheres), a further decrease in swimming speed and increase in pause behaviors occurs, yielding a swimming pattern similar to that found in the presence of phytoplankton. Colonies of the soft coral Lobophytum pauciflorum (Ehrenberg, 1834) (Coelenterata: Octocorallia: Alcyonacea: Alcyoniidae), some of which were heavily overgrown by the algae Ceranium flaccidum (Kuetzing) Ardissone and Enteromorpha sp., and other minor epizoites, were collected at Taylor Reef (17°50S; 146°35E) in the Great Barrier Reef. Overgrown colonies contained the diterpene 2-epi-sarcophytoxide as the major secondary metabolite, while conspecific colonies with clean polyparies contained two diterpenes in approximately equal amounts: 14-hydroxycembra-1,3,7,11-tetraene and 15-hydroxycembra-1,3,7,11-tetraene. By contrast, twenty conspecific pairs of overgrown and clean colonies of other alcyoniid soft corals collected from Pelorus Channel, Palm Island Group (18°34S; 146°29E), showed no chemical differences within in the pairs. Cultures of a common species of Ceramium [C. codii (Richards) Mazoyer] were incubated with different concentrations of nine soft-coral-derived diterpenes and significant algal growth inhibition was observed in many cases. It appears that terpenoids from soft coral may contribute to the lack of epizoic organisms on soft-coral polyparies.  相似文献

A study was made of the pigment composition and ultrastructure of a unicellular cyanophyte living in symbiosis with colonial didemnid ascidians and encrusting sponges collected from the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in 1981–1984. The ascidians were Trididemnum tegulum Kott and T. clinides. Kott; the sponges were Prianos aff. melanos de Laubenfels, Spirastrella aff. decumbens Ridley and an unidentified brown fleshy sponge (BFS). This cyanophyte seems to be identical with Synechocystis trididemni Lafargue et Duclaux. A phycoerythrin containing both phycourobilin and phycoerythrobilin chromophores was shown to be present; the urobilin was carried on and subunits, no subunit was found. A second phycoerythrin possessing only erythrobilin chromophores was also present. In thin-sections the cells showed no central DNA-containing nucleoid, and an unusual thylakoid arrangement with some thylakoids having greatly expanded lumens forming pseudo-vacuoles in the centre of the cell. Freeze-fracture showed 11 to 12 nm particles on both PF (protoplasmic face) and EF (exoplasmic face) faces of thylakoids. In many ways, the ultrastructure resembled that of the chlorophyll-b containing prokaryote Prochloron spp.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, inorganic nutrients, and related factors were measured throughout a productive season in a small coastal inlet of the Arctic Ocean. Significant production was confined to 5 m for a very limited time period beacause of both light and nutrient limitations. Maximum chlorophyll was 8.2 mg Chl a m-3 and maximum gross and net photosynthesis rates were 830 and 550 mg C m-2 d-1. Annual gross and net photosynthesis is estimated at about 12 and 9 g C m-2 respectively. The effect of light stimulation on assimilation is described, sources of coastal zone nutrient enrichment are considered, and discrepancies between gross and net photosynthesis are discussed with reference to the growth characteristics of the phytoplankton population.Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Brown and cherry colour morphs of the heteronemertean Lineus torquatus Coe, 1901 from the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan were compared using allele frequencies at 18 isozyme loci. These morphs shared no common alleles at 9 of the 18 loci. The observed genetic differences are strong evidence that the brown and cherry colour morphs, which occur sympatrically, are different species. Nei's genetic distance between these species (D=1.135) is considerably higher than typical D values for congeneric animal species. As with much previous work on nemerteans, intraspecific allozymic variability in both species was high, with mean expected heterozygosity values 0.286±0.049 and 0.159±0.051 for L. torquatus (brown) and L. torquatus (cherry) species, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

The hepatopancreatic extracts of Euphausia superba Dana and E. crystallorophias Holt and Tattersall collected from the Antarctic. Ocean during January 1985, are most effective in hydrolysing substrates containing (13)--glucosidic linkages. Three enzymes appear to be involved in the depolymerization of (13)--D-glucans in the euphausiid diet: (1) an exo-(13)--D-glucanase, (2) an endo-(13)--D-glucanase and (3) a -D-glucosidase. The glucanases have a pH optimum of 5.4, a temperature optimum of 50°C and are optimally extracted in bistripropane buffer, pH 7.2. Levels of (13)-D-glucanase in laboratory-cultured E. superba are inversely affected by food availability, and activities double after starvation for 12 d. The increase is due mainly to higher activities of exo-acting glucanases. -Amylase and endo-(14)--D-glucanase (cellulase) activity are also present in the extracts in addition to glycosidase activity against a range of p-nitrophenyl substrates (-and -D-glocose, - and -D-galactose, -D-xylose, - and -D-mannose). Digestive activity against several acidic polysaccharides, including the acidic mucilage polysaccharide of the ice diatom Stauroneis amphioxys, is minimal and is not induced when the polysaccharide is present in the diet of E. superba. These results indicate that some, but not all, components of the algal material in the euphausiid diet can be hydrolyzed and assimilated.  相似文献

The shortterm (10–22 d) effect of Zn, Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni on the length growth of Mytilus edulis is studied. Significant reductions of growth rate was found at 0.3 g Hgl-1, 3 g Cul-1, 10 g Znl-1, and 10 g Cdl-1 added to the local sea water, while concentrations of up to 200 gl-1 of Pb and Ni had no effect on the growth. With exposure to Cu and Zn, there was a linear reduction in growth rate with increasing metal concentration up to about 6 g Cul-1 and 100 g Znl-1. Above these levels, growth stopped with Cu, while with Zn it was stabilized at about 20% of control growth. When Hg and Cd were added, a curvilinear relationship between growth and metal concentration is indicated. With Hg, growth rate is nearly zero above 3–4 g Hgl-1, while the growth rate was 50% of control after 10 d of exposure to 100 g Cdl-1. At 2 g Cdl-1 there was a significant stimulation of length increase. Observed EC50-values for growth were 0.3–0.4 g Hgl-1, 3–4 g Cul-1, 60 g Znl-1, and 100 g Cdl-1.  相似文献

The White Sea gastropod Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) was exposed to step-wise lowering or increase of the habitat salinity. The time allowed for acclimatization to the successive salinity levels was sufficient to complete non-genetic adaptation. In this way, the lower and upper salinity limits were extended. The tolerance limits obtained are assumed to be indicative of the capacity for non-genetic adaptation and to serve as a genotypical characteristic. The tolerance of specimens colleced from in situ conditions (mid littoral, 20 S) ranged between 14 and 34 S. After non-genetic adaptation, the lower tolerance value shifted to 6 S (adaptation limit), and the upper value to 76 S (final limit not reached). There is no reason for considering White Sea H. ulvae to represent a special physiological race of specimens from those on the coast of Great Britain.  相似文献

Common mussels, Mytilus edulis (shell length 19 to 21 mm, average dry weight 30 mg) were maintained for 6 weeks in sea water containing different concentrations of lead (0.005 to 5 mg · l-1). The lead concentration in the mussels' whole soft parts was analysed at different times during the experiment. A constant rate of lead uptake, linearly dependent on the lead concentration of the medium, was observed. Thus, the temporal change of the concentration factor is also linear (regression coefficient 149.9 daily). Rate of lead loss, measured after transferring the mussels into natural sea water, is linearly dependent on the original lead concentration in the soft parts. Rates of uptake and loss in large mussels (shell length 45 to 55 mm, average dry weight 750 mg) are less than those in small mussels (shell length 19 to 21 mm, average dry weight 30 mg). During a much more extended experimental period, adjustment to a steady state is expected to occur; rates of lead uptake and loss are then non-linear. Lead uptake by individual organs (kidney, gills, adductor muscle, digestive gland, foot, mantle with gonads) of large M. edulis (shell length 45 to 55 mm, average dry weight 750 mg) was analysed in 2 test series. In the test series medium, the mussels were kept in a seawater medium containing 0.01 mg. Pb.l-1. In the test series food, the mussels were kept in natural sea water but fed with the green algae Dunaliella marina containing lead (approximately 600 g.g-1 dry weight). The lead quantity given per mussel per day was about 2 g in both test series. Within 35 days, the mussels of test series medium took up 29% of the total amount of lead given, those of test series food took up 23.5%. In all organs, lead concentration increased, but rates of uptake differed; the kidney displayed by far the highest rate of uptake. With these physiological properties M. edulis is an ideal indicator organism for lead pollution in the marine environment. In order to better formulate an artificial shrimp diet, the protein composition of shrimp was assessed and the essential amino acids determined. Penaeus aztecus were treated to remove lipids, carbohydrates and other interfering substances, and the protein was hydrolyzed to its constituent amino acids. The amino acids were then quantitatively analyzed by gasliquid chromatography as their trimethylsilyl derivatives. The essential amino acids were then determined. Shrimp were injected with 14C-labeled glucose and analyses performed to determine which amino acids then exhibited radioactivity, i.e., were synthesized from the labeled glucose. Those amino acids which were not manufactured from the glucose were categorized as essential.  相似文献

Balanus balanoides (L.) collected from an area with high heavy-metal run-off contained two different types of granule within the parenchyma cells of the prosoma. X-ray microprobe analysis shows one to be the familiar zinc granule made up of concentric layers and giving major peaks for phosphorus and zinc, and the other to be homogeneous and giving peaks for sulphur and copper. This latter granule is designated the copper granule. Whilst zinc granules are known to be composed of inorganic phosphate, various tests on copper granules in sections and in a granule-rich pellet have shown that the copper is probably complexed with organic matter. The tests also demonstrated the relatively, insoluble (inert) nature of these granules. Although zinc and copper granules were present together in the prosoma, atomic absorption analyses of whole bodies (prosoma+thorax) have shown the level of zinc (50.28 g/mg dry weight) to be much higher than that of copper (3.75 g/mg dry weight).  相似文献

Sediment-rejection rates of 22 Australian midshelf coral species were studied in situ between March and July 1988 at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Rejection rates of non-branching species were positively correlated with calice size and were faster for fine (63 to 250 m) than for coarse (500 to 1000 m) sediment at influxes of 200 mg/cm2. Increasing water turbulence was a more important influence on rejection rates for some species than for others. Most replicates of most species cleared all sediment in 2 d. Of those that did not, some Favia stelligera and Leptoria phrygia showed partial tissue death within 48 h, and Gardineroseris planulata showed partial tissue death within 6 d. Montipora aequituberculata, Porites lobata and P. lutea tolerated sediment for at least 6 d, and exhibited extensive tissue bleaching, but these tissues recovered after sediment removal. Sediment-rejection efficiency and sediment tolerance are not directly related, and wide interspecific differences may occur in both. These findings are correlated with differences in sediment-rejection mechanisms and with ecological distributions on the reef.  相似文献

Energy budgets were determined for small pieces (nubbins) of the coralsPocillopora damicornis, Montipora verrucosa andPorites lobata living at a water depth of 3 m on the fringing reef of Coconut Island, Kaneohe, Hawaii. The budgets were determined for three different types of day: an ideal day with no cloud and an in situ daily integrated irradiance at 3 m of 14.385 E m–2 d–1; a normal day with sporadic cloud cover and daily irradiance of 11.915 E m–2 d–1; and an overcast day with daily irradiance of 6.128 E m–2 d–1. On the ideal day, the energy fixed in photosynthesis was more than that required for respiration and growth of both zooxanthellae and animal components of the association, and there was a predicted loss of between 19.3 and 32.4% of the energy fixed. On a normal day, the total photosynthetic energy fixation was lower and the excess was between 12.1 and 27.9% of the energy fixed. On the overcast day, however, in bothPocillopora damicornis andPorites lobata energy expenditure exceeded photosynthetic energy fixation and the budget was in deficit. Estimates of rate of mucus secretion on an overcast day were derived and, when incorporated into the energy budget, it was predicted that all three species would have a deficit budget, necessitating the catabolism of lipid reserves. From published values for lipid storage in these species it was calculated that the reserves would last from 28 d inPocillopora damicornis to 114 d inM. verrucosa. A model is suggested in which corals draw upon their extensive lipid stores on days of sub-optimal light, replenishing the reserves again when daily light levels are high, and finally excreting the excess energy fixed, as mucus-lipid when the lipid stores are replete.  相似文献
