Six diel TCO2 cycles determined by infrared (IR) photometry from five drift stations occupied between 24 February and 16 March 1979 in the mixed layer of the northwestern Caribbean Sea are examined. Comparison of TCO2 variation with coincident salinity and O2 variation demonstrated that TCO2 often co-varied with these independently measured variables. During five diel cycles TCO2 variation was characterized by nocturnal production and diurnal consumption. The inverse, diurnal production of CO2, occurred downstream from Misteriosa Bank, whose corals apparently contributed to a water mass having a twofold increase of POC and a sixfold larger population of heterotrophic nanoplankters. For the five diel studies carried out in waters with balanced or nearly blanced heterotrophic and phototrophic components of the nanoplankton, CO2 consumption at constant salinity always occurred between 06.00 and 09.00 hrs. Net uptake often continued through 15.00 hrs, but not always in the absence of significant salinity changes. At constant salinity net O2 evolution never exceeded 0.5 mol l-1 h-1 while net CO2 uptake consistently averaged 3 mol l-1 h-1 for an apparent net production of 36 mg C m-3 h-1, which greatly exceeds the O2 changes and open ocean 14C estimates from the literature. Diurnal consumption was apparently balanced by nocturnal production of CO2 so that no significant net daily change in TCO2 was observed. Departures from theoretical PQ and RQ and the possibility of nocturnal variations in formaldehyde and carbonate alkalinity imply that chemotrophs, both methane producers and methane oxidizers, play a significant role in CO2 cycling. This could be through the metabolism of the nonconservative gases CH4, CO, and H2, and a link between chemotrophy and phototrophy through these gases is hypothesized. These open system measurements were subject to diffusion and documentable patchiness, but temporal TCO2 changes appear to indicate the net direction of microbiological activity and join a growing body of literature showing dynamic variation in CO2 and O2 that exceeds estimates by 14C bottle assays of carbon fixation.  相似文献

Phytoplankton standing crop (chlorophyll a) and primary productivity were recorded, and zooplankton biomass was estimated in the two large bays of Australia, the Great Australian Bight on the south coast (December, 1965) and the Gulf of Carpentaria on the north coast (December, 1968). In the Gulf of Carpentaria, the phytoplankton standing crop (average, 27.3 mg chlorophyll a m-2) and primary productivity (average, 133.1 mg C m-2 h-1), as well as zooplankton biomass (average, 305.3 mg wet weight m-3) are much higher than in the Great Australian Bight (12.1 mg chlorophyll a m-2, 18.2 mg C m-2 h-1, 7.1 mg wet weight m-3, respectively). The unexpectedly low productivity values in the Great Australian Bight are attributable to environmental conditions of this bay, which obtains neither replenishment of nutrients from the land nor receives upwelling of deep water.  相似文献

A new method is presented for measuring the rate of release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) produced by natural populations of marine phytoplankton. The method has been field-tested using natural populations of estuarine, coastal, and oceanic phytoplankton. Problems associated with the necessity for long incubation times, high initial activity of the inorganic 14C added to the sample, and self-absorption are overcome. Improved sensitivity is obtained by utilizing a large portion of the sample filtrate, Results from sampling at different times of day and for different lengths of incubation suggest that these problems should be reexamined in terms of both the percent and rate of relase of DOM from natural populations of phytoplankton. The rate of release of DOM from natural populations of marine phytoplankton decreases seaward. Phytoplankton in Georgia (USA) estuaries release <1 to 40 mg C m-3 day-1, in southeastern USA coastal waters from 0 to 19 mg C m-3 day-1, and in the westernmost Sargasso Sea from 0 to 2 mg C m-3 day-1. The percent of photoassimilated carbon released as DOM increases seaward. The percents are less than 7% in the Georgia estuaries, generally less than 13% in southeastern USA surface coastal waters, generally less than 21% for these coastal waters below the surface, and less than 44% for the westernmost Sargasso Sea. The results of this study and of other studies suggest that the measurement of primary productivity in estuarine and nearshore coastal waters is not seriously in error because of the absence of measurements on the rate of release of DOM from such phytoplankton. However, the estimation of primary-productivity values for oceanic waters is underestimated in some cases by about 50%.Contribution No. 595 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA and Contribution No. 224 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA.Extracted in part from a dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Georgia in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.  相似文献

Measurements of primary productivity, chlorophyll a, incident solar radiation, phosphate-P, silicate-Si, nitrate-N, nitrite-N, ammonium-N, temperature and salinity were made in the Marginal Ice Zone of the Chukchi Sea in summer 1974. Low to moderate levels of primary productivity (0.07 to 0.97 g C m-2 half-day-1) were observed; primary productivity exceeded 3 g C m-2 half-day-1 at two stations. Surface primary productivity was nitrogen-limited at most stations. Mean chlorophyll a concentration in the photic zone varied from 0.4 to 17.8 mg m-3. Higher concentrations and significant subsurface accumulation of chlorophyll a, reaching 40 mg m-3, were observed in July at stations near the ice-edge than those in open water. No chlorophyll maximum was noted in September, when values ranged from 0.4 to 2.2 mg m-3. It is postulated that the contribution of sea-ice algae to the total chlorophyll content can be substantial, but that the stay of these cells in the water column may not be long. Non-linear regression estimates from solar radiation and chlorophyll-specific primary productivity data showed a maximal photosynthetic rate of 18 mg C mg chlorophyll a -1 half-day-1, an optimal light intensity of 54 langleys half-day-1, and markedly reduced primary productivity at moderately higher light intensities. These features indicate that phytoplankton was shade-adapted.  相似文献

While it is known that Antarctic sea ice biomass and productivity are highly variable over small spatial and temporal scales, there have been very few measurements from eastern Antarctic. Here we attempt to quantify the biomass and productivity and relate patterns of variability to sea ice latitude ice thickness and vertical distribution. Sea ice algal biomass in spring in 2002, 2003 and 2004 was low, in the range 0.01–8.41 mg Chl a m−2, with a mean and standard deviation of 2.08 ± 1.74 mg Chl a m−2 (n = 199). An increased concentration of algae at the bottom of the ice was most pronounced in thicker ice. There was little evidence to suggest that there was a gradient of biomass distribution with latitude. Maximum in situ production in 2002 was approximately 2.6 mg C m−2 h−1 with assimilation numbers of 0.73 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Assimilation numbers determined by the 14C incubations in 2002 varied between 0.031 and 0.457 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Maximum fluorescence quantum yields of the incubated ice samples in 2002 were 0.470 ± 0.041 with E k indices between 19 and 44 μmol photons m−2 s−1. These findings are consistent with the shade-adapted character of ice algal communities. In 2004 maximum in situ production was 5.9 mg C m−2 h−1 with an assimilation number of 5.4 mg C (mg Chl a)−1 h−1. Sea ice biomass increased with ice thickness but showed no correlation with latitude or the time the ice was collected. Forty-four percent of the biomass was located in bottom communities and these were more commonly found in thicker ice. Surface communities were uncommon.  相似文献

In situ measurements of community respiration were made at two stations in Castle Harbor, Bermuda, during April and May, 1971. Total community respiration was 20.67 and 19.11 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at Stations 1 and 2, respectively, in April. In May, respiration increased with water temperature to 26.99 and 24.56 ml O2 m-2 h-1. Significant differences (P<0.05) existed between stations and sampling periods. Bacterial respiration was estimated from sediment treatment with streptomycin-SO4. Values ranged from 7.71 to 8.72 ml O2 m-2 h-1 in April and May, respectively. No significant difference existed between sampling periods or stations. No detectable chemical O2 demand of the sediment, determined by a formalin treatment, was found. Total community respiration was further compartmentalized into macrofaunal, meiofaunal, and microfaunal-microfloral components. Both the macrofaunal and meiofaunal respiration was negligible compared to that estimated for the microfaunal-microfloral component.Contribution No. 2708 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Contribution No. 552 from the Bermuda Biology Station. Diel changes in phytoplankton photosynthetic efficiency in Brackish waters   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
From 18 to 23 September 1974, investigations on the diel changes in phytoplankton were carried out in the Baltic Sea. Every 4 h, water samples were collected from 2 and 15 m, and PO4, chlorophyll a, temperature, salinity, pH, phytoplankton composition and phytoplankton light photosynthesis relationship were determined. Continuous measurements of surface irradiance and some estimations of zooplankton were also made. P B (photosynthesis per unit chlorophyll a at low light levels of 2·10-2 cal cm-2 min-1) revealed only random variation during the sampling period, i.e., 1.0 to 1.6 mg C (mg chlorophyll a)-1 h-1. P m B (Light-saturated photosynthesis per unit of chlorophyll a) displayed pronounced diel fluctuations with the highest value of about 6 mg C (mg chlorophyll a)-1 h-1 around noon, and the lowest value of about 2.5 mg C (mg chlorophyll a)-1 h-1 during the night, during which latter period the value of P m B was more or less constant. Reasons for the diel fluctuations are discussed, and an equation which describes these fluctuations is proposed. Using this equation, the daily phytoplankton production estimated in incubators by a previously described method can be corrected for the time of day at which samples are collected.  相似文献

A systematic effort was made to assess the emission of methane from paddy fields using closed chamber technique. Methane emission measurements were performed over a year during the Kharif (wet season), Rabi (dry season), and fallow periods. Various soil parameters like redox potential, organic carbon and ferrous ion were determined to evaluate their control on methane emissions. Diurnal measurement of the flux showed a minimum (0.44?mg?m?2?h?1) in the morning (8?a.m.), which increased gradually to a value of 1.16?mg?m?2?h?1 till the evening due to the rise in soil temperature. The seasonally integrated flux (E SIF) for CH4 was calculated. The E SIF for methane during Kharif and Rabi crops were found to be 5.97?g?m?2 and 2.59?g?m?2, respectively. It was observed that the methane flux was maximum during flowering and fertilizer application stages for both paddy cropping seasons. The redox potential was low and the ferrous ion was higher during flowering and tiller stages. The methane emission was higher at E AIF) was calculated for methane to make a budget estimate of methane emission from rice cultivated under rain fed drought prone water regime.  相似文献

Measurements of total, chemical and biological oxygen consumption were made at 5 stations situated between 22 and 35 m in Lindåspollene, Norway. The results from each station did not reveal any clear seasonal variation, but the pooled data showed highest values in September, and lowest in January. Problems concerning interpretion of results of biological and chemical O2 consumption obtained by a poisoning technique (using formaldehyde) are discussed. The time-weighted mean of the annual total O2 consumption based on all stations was 10.67 ml m-2 h-1 or 92.2 l m-2 year-1. This corresponds to a consumption of 34.5g C m-2 year-1 (respiratory quotient=0.7), or 34 to 37% of the net annual primary production of phytoplankton.  相似文献

Primary production at Antarctic coastal sites is contributed from sea ice algae, phytoplankton and benthic algae. Oxygen microelectrodes were used to estimate sea ice and benthic primary production at several sites around Casey, a coastal area in eastern Antarctica. Maximum oxygen export from sea ice was 0.95 mmol O2 m−2 h−1 (~11.7 mg C m−2 h−1) while from the sediment it was 6.08 mmol O2 m−2 h−1 (~70.8 mg C m−2 h−1). When the ice was present O2 export from the benthos was either low or negative. Sea ice algae assimilation rates were up to 3.77 mg C (mg Chl-a)−1 h−1 while those from the benthos were up to 1.53 mg C (mg Chl-a)−1 h−1. The contribution of the major components of primary productivity was assessed using fluorometric techniques. When the ice was present approximately 55–65% of total daily primary production occurred in the sea ice with the remainder unequally partitioned between the sediment and the water column. When the ice was absent, the benthos contributed nearly 90% of the primary production.  相似文献

It is now possible to divide particulate primary production into algal and heterotrophic components without physical separation. This depends on two innovations, the introduction of isotope in the form of labelled dissolved product(s) of primary production and the employment of a data analysis specifically designed for tracer kinetic incorporation experiments. The 14C technique described by Steemann Nielsen (1952) is inapplicable in the analyses of certain classes of systems and kinetic tracer incorporation experiments must be employed instead. We show that measurement of PDOC production rate requires such kinetic tracer analyses. Measurements made in the laboratory on water taken from 2 m depth in South West Arm of the Port Hacking estuary showed that: (1) the steady-state rate of PDOC production was 0.10 to 0.13 mg C.m-3.h-1; (2) the rate of PDOC incorporation into microheterotroph particulate organic carbon was 0.10 to 0.12 mg C.m-3.h-1; (3) the rate at which PDOC was respired to CO2 was 0.001 to 0.003 mg C.m-3.h-1. (4) the PDOC makes up only about 0.1% of the total dissolved organic carbon. The size class of particles associated with PDOC production differed from the size class responsible for uptake of PDOC. More than 50% of the PDOC production was associated with particles having a nominal diameter range of 20 to 63 m, while this fraction was responsible for <10% of the incorporation.  相似文献

With large influx of freshwater that decreases sea-surface salinities, weak wind forcing of <10 m s−1 and almost always warm (>28°C) sea-surface temperature that stratifies and shallows the mixed layer leading to low or no nutrient injections into the surface, primary production in Bay of Bengal is reportedly low. As a consequence, the Bay of Bengal is considered as a region of low biological productivity. Along with many biological parameters, bacterioplankton abundance and production were measured in the Bay of Bengal during post monsoon (September–October 2002) along an open ocean transect, in the central Bay (CB, 88°E) and the other transect in the western Bay (WB). The latter representing the coastal influenced shelf/slope waters. Bacterioplankton abundances (<2 × 109cells l−1) were similar to those reported from the HNLC equatorial Pacific and the highly productive northern Arabian Sea. Yet, the thymidine uptake rates along CB (average of 1.46 pM h−1) and WB (average of 1.40 pM h−1) were less than those from the northwestern Indian Ocean. These abundances and uptake rates were higher than those in the oligotrophic northwestern Sargasso Sea (<7 × 108 cells l−1; av 1.0 pM h−1). Concentrations of chlorophyll a (chl a), primary production rates and total organic carbon (TOC) were also measured for a comparison of heterotrophic and autotrophic production. In the WB, bacterioplankton carbon biomass equaled ∼ 95% of chl a carbon than just 31% in the CB. Average bacterial:primary production (BP:PP) ratios accounted for 29% in the CB and 31% in the WB. This is mainly due to lower primary productivity (PP) in the WB (281 mg C m−2 d−1) than in the CB (306 mg C m−2 day−1). This study indicates that bacteria–phytoplankton relationship differs in the open (CB) and coastal waters (WB). Higher abundance and contrastingly low bacterial production (BP) in WB may be because of the riverine bacteria, brought in through discharges, becoming dormant and unable to reproduce in salinities of 28 or more psu. Heterotrophic bacteria appear to utilize in situ DOC rather rapidly and their carbon demand is ∼50% of daily primary production. It is also apparent that allochthonous organic matter, in particular in the western Bay, is important for meeting their carbon demand.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass and production in the upwelling region of NW Africa and relationships with hydrographic parameters were studied. During the cruise of Atlor VII carried out in November 1975 in the upwelling region of NW Africa, measurements of chlorophyll a and primary production as derived from 14C uptake experiments were made at a total of 40 stations. Biomass and production showed the higher values on the shelf in the area of Banc d'Arguin and north of Cap Blanc. Production estimates in this area ranged between 1.4 and 3.2 g C m-2 d-1. There was a marked minimum in biomass and production at Lat. 21 ° N, in the zone of maximum upwelling intensity. With the exception of this minimum, the productive area coincided with the zone where surface temperature was lower than 18 ° C (indicating dominance of upwelled Central Waters) and nutrients were detectable in the upper layers. In the poorer offshore area there was a distinct subsurface chlorophyll maximum. The results are compared with those of previous cruises and some features of the seasonal cycle in the studied area are discussed.  相似文献

The rate of oxygen evolution by the tropical marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium thiebautii was recorded at different times during the day in samples collected in 1992 from the Bahama Islands and the NE Caribbean Sea. This cyanobacterium is unique in that it is the only non-heterocystous diazotroph capable of N2-fixation in daylight. Oxygen evolution was measured under conditions of natural day/night (LD, N=50), constant light (LL, N=14), and constant dark (DD, N=2×14). Photosynthesis vs intensity (P-I) relationships were calculated at various times of day, and the following parameters were used for further evaluation: photosynthesic capacity (P max, 66 to 91 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), initial slope of the P-I curve (, 0.23 to 0.27), dark respiration (R, 12 to 27 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), and the intensity at which O2 consumption is compensated by O2 production (I c, 78 to 160 Em-2 s-1). All means showed large standard deviations (for some parameters more than 200%). In some cases, these variations could be explained with a sinusoidal 24-h time course, but only the compensation point showed a significant daily variation (p0.001) in both LD and DD. The fact that the time course of I c typical for natural conditions remains rhythmic under constant dark conditions strongly suggests a circadian regulation. Few circadian rhythms have been observed in prokaryotes, and this appears to be the first observation of such a rhythm in a cyanobacterium which fixes N2 in daytime.  相似文献

A dual-isotope method was developed to measure grazing rates and food preferences of individual species of heterotrophic dinoflagellates from natural populations, collected from the Slope, Gulf Stream, and Sargasso Sea and from a transect from Iceland to New England, in 1983. The isotope method measures the grazing rates of microzooplankton which cannot be separated in natural populations on the basis of size. Tritiated-thymidine and 14C-bicarbonate were used to label natural heterotrophic and autotrophic food, respectively. Nine oceanic dinoflagellate species in the genera Protoperidinium, Podolampas, and Diplopsalis fed on both heterotrophic and autotrophic food particles with clearance rates of 0.4 to 8.0 l cell-1 h-1, based on 3H incorporation, and 0.0 to 28.3 l cell-1 h-1, based on 14C incorporation. Two dinoflagellate species, Protoperidinium ovatum and Podolampas palmipes, fed only on 3H-labelled food particles. Several species of dinoflagellates fed on bacteria (<1 m) which had been prelabelled with 3H-thymidine. The clearance rates of heterotrophic dinoflagellates and ciliates were similar and within the range of tintinnid ciliate clearance rates reported in the literature. As heterotrophic dinoflagellates and ciliates can have comparable abundances in oceanic waters, we conclude that heterotrophic dinoflagellates may have an equally important impact as microheterotrophic grazers of phytoplankton and bacteria in oceanic waters.Partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, OCE-81-17744  相似文献

Distribution, density, and feeding dynamics of the pelagic tunicate Salpa thompsoni have been investigated during the expedition ANTARKTIS XVIII/5b to the Eastern Bellingshausen Sea on board RV Polarstern in April 2001. This expedition was the German contribution to the field campaign of the Southern Ocean Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics Study (SO-GLOBEC). Salps were found at 31% of all RMT-8 and Bongo stations. Their densities in the RMT-8 samples were low and did not exceed 4.8 ind m−2 and 7.4 mg C m−2. However, maximum salp densities sampled with the Bongo net reached 56 ind m−2 and 341 mg C m−2. A bimodal salp length frequency distribution was recorded over the shelf, and suggested two recent budding events. This was also confirmed by the developmental stage composition of solitary forms. Ingestion rates of aggregate forms increased from 2.8 to 13.9 μg (pig) ind−1 day−1 or from 0.25 to 2.38 mg C ind−1 day−1 in salps from 10 to 40 mm oral-atrial length, accounting for 25–75% of body carbon per day. Faecal pellet production rates were on average 0.08 pellet ind−1 h−1 with a pronounced diel pattern. Daily individual egestion rates in 13 and 30 mm aggregates ranged from 0.6 to 4.8 μg (pig) day−1 or from 164 to 239 μg C day−1. Assimilation efficiency ranged from 73 to 90% and from 65 to 76% in 13 and 30 mm aggregates, respectively. S. thompsoni exhibited similar ingestion and egestion rates previously estimated for low Antarctic (~50°S) habitats. It has been suggested that the salp population was able to develop in the Eastern Bellingshausen Sea due to an intrusion into the area of the warm Upper Circumpolar Deep Water  相似文献

Benthic community respiration was measured in situ at 9 stations along the Gay Head-Bermuda transect from depths of 40 to 5200 m. Three methods were used; bell jar respirometers, grab respirometers, and free vehicle respirometers. Benthic community respiration rates spanned three orders of magnitude, decreasing from 21.5 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at 40 m in November to 0.02 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at 5200 m. Rates decreased two orders of magnitude between 40 and 1800 m and then significantly declined again between the continental rise (3650 m) and the abyssal plain stations. Predictive equations for benthic community respiration along the transect reflect a strong correlation with depth of water. Of lesser significance are the correlations with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, benthic animal biomass, surface primary productivity and sediment organic matter. Calculations show that annual benthic respiration can utilize 1 to 2% of the surface primary productivity. Of the 2 to 7% organic carbon fixed at the surface which supposedly reaches the bottom, only 15 to 29% is utilized by the benthic community at 2200, 3000, and 3650 m. The energy requirements of other biological components of deep-sea benthic communities, such as benthopelagic and macro-epibenthic animals, not included in these measurements, must also be considered in calculating a balance of carbon.Contribution from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  相似文献

Fiftysix experiments were run for 22 h on 200 μ-net zooplankton in non-filtered sea water. The equations of orthogonal regression lines between respiration, and mineral, total nitrogen, and phosphorus excretion rates have been computed for 14 stations in the upwelling Mauritanian area. Correlation coefficients are high: excretion values may be estimated from respiration values in order to follow the N and P flux through the Mauritanian zooplanktonic populations. O:N, O:P, N:P, mineral:total excretion ratios are calculated for each station and are not significantly different in the 3 areas of the upwelling area studied. On the average, 48% of excreted phosphorus is thoroughly oxidized into phosphate and needs 142.4 atoms in respiration per P atom. The remainder, excreted as organic phosphorus, requires the same amount of oxygen for its later mineralization. The O:P ratio thus obtained is close to the theoretical -276. Fiftyfour percent of the nitrogen excreted is mineral and the O:N-NH + 4 ratio shows a dominant carbohydrate and fat catabolism. The N:P ratio is constant, and close to 10 for both mineral and total excretion.  相似文献

In an attempt to evaluate CO2 changes as an index of net ecosystem metabolism, CO2 and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by infrared (IR) analysis and O2 by the Winkler method were followed over 12 diel cycles in a salt marsh, a simulated estuarine ecosystem, and the mixed layer of the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Each ecosystem exhibited replicable diel cycles, net production during the photoperiod, and a significant inverse correlation between CO2 and O2 changes. Daily rates of system production and respiration calculated from CO2, however, exceeded those from O2 by 1.5 to 3.5 fold in nearshore waters and by 2 to 6 fold in the open ocean. Net total system apparent production based on O2 and CO2, respectively, were 2 345 and 3 604 mg C m-3d-1 for the salt marsh, 348 and 625 mg C m-3d-1 for the estuarine ecosystem, and 53 and 306 mg C m-3d-1 for the oceanic ecosystem, both parameters exceeding 14C data in the literature for similar environments by one to two orders of magnitude. The IR CO2 productivity estimates are compatible with the diel cycles in DOC. In the marsh and Caribbean Sea, maxinium DOC concentrations were usually observed in the evening following a gradual accumulation during the photoperiod, while minimal values occurred in the early morning. In all ecosystems the average net release of DOC lagged CO2 uptake and O2 production and represented 22.7 and 43.3% of the carbon fixed as estimated from CO2 uptake and O2 production, respectively. If the consistently higher CO2 measurements are not a systematic error nor due to atmospheric diffusion, then diel variation in O2 and CO2 may not always be quantitatively coupled due in part to habitat-dependent factors such as the nonphotosynthetic incorporation of CO2 and chemosynthetic removal of O2.  相似文献

Phytoplankton species diversity was generally high throughout the year at two stations in the central Red Sea (Lat. 21°30N), and species of Mediterranean and Indian Ocean origin were represented, reflecting seasonal monsoonal influence. Low phytoplankton cell numbers accompanying high production rates suggest the significance of nanoplankton or picoplankton which were not enumerated. Production was high year-round, and averaged 390 gC m-2 yr-1, despite the virtual lack of nutrient additions from rainfall or land runoff or demonstrable upwelling. Highest nutrient levels followed the first seasonal peak of production. Biomass and production were seasonally bi- or tri-modal, with major peaks in December–February and June–August, 1977–1978. The first peak of production, populated by diatoms, occurred at the onset of seasonal stratification, but the second peak, populated by Trichodesmium spp., occurred at the height of seasonal stratification and lowest nutrient concentrations. There is no clear relationship between the timing of monsoon activity and the annual production cycle.  相似文献
