The genetic population structures of Atlantic northern bluefin tuna ( Thunnus thynnus thynnus) and albacore ( T. alalunga) were examined using allozyme analysis. A total of 822 Atlantic northern bluefin tuna from 18 different samples (16 Mediterranean, 1 East Atlantic, 1 West Atlantic) and 188 albacore from 5 samples (4 Mediterranean, 1 East Atlantic) were surveyed for genetic variation in 37 loci. Polymorphism and heterozygosity reveal a moderate level of genetic variability, with only two highly polymorphic loci in both Atlantic northern bluefin tuna ( FH* and SOD- 1*) and albacore ( GPI- 3* and XDH*). The level of population differentiation found for Atlantic northern bluefin tuna and albacore fits the pattern that has generally been observed in tunas, with genetic differences on a broad rather than a more local scale. For Atlantic northern bluefin tuna, no spatial or temporal genetic heterogeneity was observed within the Mediterranean Sea or between the East Atlantic and Mediterranean, indicating the existence of a single genetic grouping on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. Very limited genetic differentiation was found between West Atlantic and East Atlantic/Mediterranean northern bluefin tuna, mainly due to an inversion of SOD- 1* allele frequencies. Regarding albacore, no genetic heterogeneity was observed within the Mediterranean Sea or between Mediterranean and Azores samples, suggesting the existence of a single gene pool in this area. 相似文献

One of the consequences of ultraviolet radiation exposure in anthozoans possessing photosynthetic endosymbionts (i.e., zooxanthellae) is production of reactive oxygen species that can damage cellular components, especially lipids and photosynthetic membranes. It is well known that carotenoids are potent antioxidants that can mitigate oxygen radical damage, but the origin of these compounds in zooxanthellate anthozoans is obscured because they can potentially originate from endosymbionts, heterotrophic feeding by the host, or a combination thereof. We used Aiptasia pallida, a common Caribbean anemone, to investigate the effects of exogenous food sources, ultraviolet-A radiation (UVA, 320–400 nm), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) on carotenoid levels in zooxanthellate anthozoans. Anemones were exposed to one of three simulated light treatments in the laboratory for 38 days: PAR (60% below ambient)/UVA (similar to ambient), PAR/low UVA (42% below ambient), and low PAR (98.4% below ambient)/no UVA. In addition, anemones were either fed a carotenoid-rich diet of Artemia salina nauplii, or starved. Carotenoids identified in A. pallida included peridinin, diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin and -carotene. While a diet of Ar. salina nauplii had no effect on the carotenoid composition of A. pallida, a two-way analysis of variance revealed that anemones exposed to ambient UVA levels had significantly greater diatoxanthin concentrations relative to the total xanthophyll pool [diato:(diato+diadino)] after 10 days of exposure. This difference among treatments was not present at 20 days, but reappeared as an effect due to starvation rather than UVA at days 30 and 38. These results suggest that carotenoids in A. pallida are not influenced by exogenous feeding and that photoprotective xanthophyll cycling is sensitive to stresses such as UVA and starvation.Communicated by P.W. We conducted grazing experiments with the three marine cladoceran genera Penilia, Podon and Evadne, with Penilia avirostris feeding on plankton communities from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean, Spain), covering a wide range of food concentrations (0.02–8.8 mm3 l–1, plankton assemblages grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels), and with Podon intermedius and Evadne nordmanni feeding on the plankton community found in summer in Hopavågen Fjord (NE Atlantic, Norway, 0.4 mm3 l–1). P. avirostris and P. intermedius showed bell-shaped grazing spectra. Both species reached highest grazing coefficients at similar food sizes, i.e. when the food organisms ranged between 15 and 70 µm and between 7.5 and 70 µm at their longest linear extensions, respectively. E. nordmanni preferred organisms of around 125 µm, but also showed high grazing coefficients for particles of around 10 µm, while grazing coefficients for intermediate food sizes were low. Lower size limits were >2.5 µm, for all cladocerans. P. avirostris showed upper food size limits of 100 µm length (longest linear extension) and of 37.5 µm particle width. Upper size limits for P. intermedius were 135 µm long and 60 µm wide; those for E. nordmanni were 210 µm long and 60 µm wide. Effective food concentration (EFC) followed a domed curve with increasing nutrient enrichment for P. avirostris; maximum values were at intermediate enrichment levels. The EFC was significantly higher for P. intermedius than for E. nordmanni. With increasing food concentrations, the clearance rates of P. avirostris showed a curvilinear response, with a narrow modal range; ingestion rates indicated a rectilinear functional response. Mean clearance rates of P. avirostris, P. intermedius and E. nordmanni were 25.5, 18.0 and 19.3 ml ind.–1 day–1, respectively. Ingestion rates at similar food concentrations (0.4 mm3 l–1) were 0.6, 0.8 and 0.9 g C ind.–1 day–1.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe 相似文献

Previous research on gametic incompatibility in marine invertebrates suggests that for highly dispersive marine invertebrate species, barriers to fertilization among closely related taxa are often incomplete and sometimes asymmetric. The nature of these barriers can dramatically affect the patterns of gene flow and genetic differentiation between species, and thus speciation. Blue mussels, in the genus Mytilus, are genetically distinct in allopatry yet hybrids are present wherever any two species within the group co-occur. The present study sampled M. edulis (L.) and M. trossulus (Gould) in May and June 2001 from the East Bay section of Cobscook Bay, Maine, USA (latitude 44°56′30″N; longitude 67°07′50″W), where the two species are sympatric. Gamete incompatibility was investigated in a series of laboratory fertilizations carried out in July 2001. The proportion of fertilized eggs typically exceeded 80% at sperm concentrations of 103–104 ml?1 among intraspecific matings (n=18), but was <30% even at sperm concentrations in excess of 105–106 ml?1 for interspecific matings (n=13). Further analysis indicated that approximately 100- to 700-fold higher sperm concentrations were required to achieve 20% fertilization in interspecific matings relative to intraspecific matings, indicating strong barriers to interspecific fertilization. The proportion of fertilized eggs did not follow this general pattern in all matings, however. The eggs from two (out of five) M. edulis females were almost as receptive to M. trossulus sperm as they were to M. edulis sperm. In contrast, the eggs from all M. trossulus females (n=3) were unreceptive to M. edulis sperm, suggesting that fertilization barriers between these species may be asymmetric. Given the experimental design employed in this study, the results are also consistent with a strong maternal or egg effect on the level of interspecific gamete compatibility in M. edulis. 相似文献

The nature and speed of intraspecific genetic differentiation between the Artemia population native to San Francisco Bay (SFB) and populations resulting from introduction of SFB material into Vietnam (Vinh Chau, VC) have been investigated from a multidisciplinary perspective using reproductive characters, allozymes and mitochondrial DNA. Rapid divergence between SFB and VC Artemia is evident from an analysis of five reproductive traits at the temperatures of 26°C and 30°C. The VC strain seems to be better adapted to high temperature, as gauged by the significantly higher reproductive output displayed compared with SFB Artemia. Analysis of variance confirms the existence of a strong genetic component involved in the determination of encystment. Allozyme analysis (20 loci) of the same strains reveals considerable genetic differences between samples, cultured at the above temperatures. Combined probability values for tests of allele frequency homogeneity pooled over all polymorphic loci, at 30°C as well as between temperatures, are 0.015 and 0.026, respectively. In addition, cluster analysis shows evidence of differentiation of Vietnamese Artemia from the wild (SFB) stock as early as within a year after inoculation. Mitochondrial DNA RFLP markers show similar patterns of genetic differentiation to those seen with allozymes and reproductive traits. However, unlike allozymes, there is strong evidence of a reduction in haplotype diversity from 40.6% in SFB Artemia to 10.5% in the established VC strain. Although genetic drift could account for much of the depletion in gene diversity, firm indications are obtained of selective forces shaping the gene pool in the tropical conditions of Vietnam. The brine shrimp is an invaluable genetic system for fine-scale studies of microevolutionary divergence, and multidisciplinary studies are likely to be of both fundamental and practical value for such inquiries.Communicated by O. Fish belonging to the genus Macroramphosus are distributed throughout the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Some authors consider this genus monotypic, Macroramphosus scolopax being the only valid species. Other authors consider (based on several morphological and ecological characters) that another
species (Macroramphosus gracilis) exists and occurs frequently in sympatry with the first one. Intermediate forms are also reported in literature. In this
paper, using the mitochondrial control region and the nuclear first S7 intron markers, we failed to find genetic differences
between individuals considered to belong to both species as well as the intermediate forms. Our results suggest that in the
northeastern Atlantic, Macroramphosus is represented by a single species, M. scolopax, with different morphotypes interbreeding in the sampling areas. 相似文献

This study devised a staging system for, and monitored, the gonad development of the limpet species Patella vulgata and Patella ulyssiponensis on the South West coast of Ireland using histological techniques. Maturation began in the males of both species in January
and in the females it began in March. There was no statistical difference in gonad development between sexes and between species.
Spawning in the male P. vulgata occurred from September to December 2003 and in September and October 2004. In female P. vulgata spawning occurred from October to December 2003, no spawning of females was observed in 2004. In male P. ulyssiponensis spawning occurred in November and December 2003 and from September 2004 to December 2004. Spawning was observed from November
2003 to January 2004 and in September 2004 in female P. ulyssiponensis. Sex ratios also varied between the species and between months sampled. Nevertheless more males were observed in both species. 相似文献

Allozyme variation of 10 populations of Linckia laevigata at 8 polymorphic loci and 13 populations of Tridacna crocea at 6 polymorphic loci were analyzed to compare genetic variability and genetic affinities among reefs in Palawan, Philippines. Two to five populations were sampled from each of four regions: the shelf reefs in (1) northern Palawan and (2) southern Palawan and the offshore reefs in (3) the Kalayaan island group (KIG) in the South China Sea and (4) the Tubbataha shoals in the Sulu Sea. Heterozygosity was highest in populations of L. laevigata from the south shelf of Palawan and populations of T. crocea from the Tubbataha shoals of the Sulu Sea. The lowest heterozygosity estimates were from the reefs of the KIG in the South China Sea, for both species. Overall F ST values for both species were significant, with an estimated average number of effective migrants per generation (N EM) of 4.85 (~5 individuals) for L. laevigata and 3.54 (~4 individuals) for T. crocea. Within-region comparisons showed NEM ranging from 6.29 to 92.34 for L. laevigata and from 3.40 to 6.30 for T. crocea. The higher gene flow among L. laevigata populations relative to T. crocea is consistent with the greater dispersal potential of the former species. Finer scale genetic structuring was evident in T. crocea populations. For both species, the Tubbataha reefs in the Sulu Sea have higher genetic affinity with the populations from the southern shelf of Palawan, while the reefs in the KIG had higher affinity with the northern Palawan shelf reefs. The north and south shelf populations have the least genetic affinity. Genetic patchiness among reefs within regions suggests the importance of small-scale physical factors that affect recruitment success in structuring populations in small island and shoal reef systems in Palawan. 相似文献

Tentacles of the sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, are covered with hair bundles. Hair bundles were deflected by water jets to test whether they are mechanoreceptors. Electrophysiological recordings confirm that deflections of hair bundles induce transients in membrane current. In a different species of anemone, hair bundle mechanoreceptors are known to change shape and responsiveness according to the activity of chemoreceptors that bind prey-derived compounds including N-acetylated sugars. In Nematostella, hair bundles significantly elongate upon exposure to NANA, an N-acetylated sugar. Based on a bioassay in which discharged nematocysts are counted in gelatin-coated test probes touched to tentacles, we find that NANA shifts vibration dependent discharge of basitrich nematocysts to lower frequencies overlapping those produced during swimming by known prey including planktonic crustaceans. Furthermore, we find for the first time that vibration detection extends at least 2.5 cm beyond the tentacle tips. Thus, Nematostella likely employs its hair bundles to detect swimming movements of nearby prey. 相似文献

The influence of abiotic factors on the establishment and success of invasive species is often difficult to determine for
most marine ecosystems. However, examining this relationship is critical for predicting the spread of invasive species and
predicting which habitats will be most vulnerable to invasion. Here we examine the mortality and physiological sensitivity
to salinity of adult colonies of the colonial ascidians Botryllus schlosseri and Botrylloides violaceus. Adult colonies of each species were exposed to abrupt changes in salinity (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 psu) in the laboratory.
Salinity ranges used in the laboratory corresponded with those of the field distributions of B. violaceus and B. schlosseri in the Great Bay Estuary, NH. Heart rate was used as a proxy for health to assess the condition of individual colonies. Heart
rates were monitored daily for approximately 2 weeks. Results revealed that both species experienced 100% mortality after
1 day at 5 psu and that their heart rates declined with decreasing salinity. Heart rates of B. schlosseri remained consistent between 15 and 30 psu and slowed at 10 psu. Heart rates of B. violaceus remained constant between 20 and 30 psu, but slowed at 15 psu. These laboratory results corresponded to the distribution
of these species in estuaries, indicating salinity is a key factor in the distribution and dominance of B. schlosseri and B. violaceus among coastal and estuarine sites. Furthermore, physiological differences to salinity were found between colonies of B. schlosseri in the Venetian Lagoon and colonies in Portsmouth Harbor, suggesting adaptation to environmental variables. 相似文献

Competitive interactions between germlings of Ascophyllum nodosum (L) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were studied both in the laboratory and on a shore of the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. Both intra- and interspecific competition were investigated by comparing the performance of algal germlings both in monocultures and mixed populations of the two species. The growth of germlings of both species reduced with increasing density. F. vesiculosus always grew faster than Ascophyllum and did best in mixed cultures, whereas Ascophyllum did least well when mixed with Fucus germlings. Clearly the adverse effects of F. vesiculosus on A. nodosum were greater than those of Ascophyllum cohorts. At the same total density, the survival and growth of Ascophyllum declined with an increasing proportion of Fucus germlings, implying that poor recruitment of A. nodosum results from strong competition with F. vesiculosus. However, under desiccation stress on the shore, F. vesiculosus enhanced the survival of A. nodosum at the early germling stage even though competition may occur again at the late stage. Thus, whether interactions between germlings take the form of competition or facilitation depends on the environmental conditions.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe 相似文献

In Japan, mass-production of sea urchin juveniles involves the culture of periphytic diatom films on plastic plates in 5- to 15-tonne tanks for the induction of larval metamorphosis. This study focused on the larval response of sea urchins, Pseudocentrotus depressus and Anthocidaris crassispina, to natural microbial films in the sea and diatom-based films formed in the tanks. The effect of diatoms and bacteria on larval metamorphosis was also examined using laboratory-cultured diatom-based films in the presence of germanium dioxide and antibiotics during film culture. Furthermore, the nature of the cue of the cultured diatom-based film was also investigated. Results showed that P. depressus and A. crassispina metamorphosed both on natural microbial films and diatom-based films in a tank. In the sea, the metamorphosis (%) of P. depressus increased gradually in accordance with the immersion period of film formed on glass slides, whereas the larval metamorphosis of A. crassispina had a bell-shaped response curve. In the tank, although the diatom-based films showed a low inducing activity for larval metamorphosis of A. crassispina, the metamorphosis of P. depressus larvae increased linearly in accordance with the diatom density. These results suggest that diatom-based films could promote the larval metamorphosis of P. depressus, but are less important in A. crassispina. In a simultaneous larval assay (May), P. depressus showed a higher percentage of metamorphosis than A. crassispina. We concluded that the former is more sensitive to diatom-based film than the latter and that this is due to differences in their natural habitats. For laboratory-cultured diatom-based film, both species of sea urchins showed a similar response, in which reduction in diatom and bacteria density resulted in a decrease in the original inducing activity. There seems to be a synergistic effect between diatom and bacteria in inducing larval metamorphosis. Films subjected to treatment with 0.1 N HCl were no longer inductive for either sea urchin, while those films treated with 40°C heat or EtOH (5% and 10% EtOH) showed a significant reduction in the inducing activity. Thus the surface-associated cues may be highly susceptible to the above treatments.Communicated by T. Ikeda, Hakodate 相似文献

Photosynthetic, growth, and reproductive characters for colonies of the massive coral Montastraea faveolata were measured at 3-m-depth and 18-m-depth populations in the Florida Keys in 1993 to investigate reproductive behavior across depth. I tested the hypothesis that reproductive traits would exhibit depth-related decreases similar to those documented for photosynthetically derived energy availability and growth rate. Colonies at the 18 m site had significantly reduced access to photosynthetically derived energy compared to colonies at 3 m depth. Linear skeletal extension rates were also reduced at the deep site (mean±SE; 3 m: 6.13 mm year−1±0.35; 18 m: 3.44 mm year−1±0.36; P <0.001). Contrary to expectations, depth did not affect most reproductive characters. Reproductive allocation, the amount of lipid invested in reproduction, was similar between depths (3 m: 3.74 mg lipid cm−2±0.55; 18 m: 3.88 mg lipid cm−2±0.62; P <0.8). Reproductive effort, the proportion of total lipid invested in reproduction, was also similar between sites (3 m: 41.4%±4.7; 18 m: 47.3%±7.12; P <0.163). Colonies within a depth did differ significantly in many gametic characteristics including eggs per gonad, total egg area, spermary area, total gonad area, and male allocation (the proportion of total gonad area invested in spermary tissue), but only total egg area differed between depths, and this was greater at 18 m (3 m: 55.63 μm2×104±4.76; 18 m: 60.51 μm2×104±3.41; P <0.035). Colonies at the two sites had similar polyp fecundity (egg production per polyp); however, a difference in polyp density between sites (3 m: 5.56 polyps cm−2±0.21; 18 m: 4.87 polyps cm−2±0.15; P <0.028) resulted in a significant reduction in area fecundity (egg production per square centimeter) at the 18 m site (3 m: 554 eggs cm−2±27.9; 18 m: 422 eggs cm−2±31.0; P <0.045). Thus, there was a depth-related fecundity cost arising from a change in colony architecture (i.e. polyp spacing) rather than a direct effect of depth on the number of eggs produced per polyp. Egg production per gonad was positively correlated between 1993 and 1994 (r =0.540, P <0.05), indicating that other reproductive characteristics may also be stable between years. 相似文献

The genetic structure and phylogeography of the brown seaweed Sargassum horneri/filicinum complex in Japan were studied based on the mitochondrial cox3 haplotype. The cox3 haplotypes found were divided into three clades in a statistical parsimony network, among which there were large numbers
of steps. Contrary to the reported large amount of drifting S. horneri along the Japanese coast, the three clades were dividedly distributed on the Japanese coast: the northern Pacific, the central
Pacific, and western Japan. The western Japan S. horneri had haplotypes that were phylogenetically closer to those of S. filicinum than to the northern and central Pacific S. horneri populations. The S. filicinum populations were included within the western Japan clade and grouped together with the S. horneri samples from western Japan. Taken together with the unstable morphological diagnosis, this result suggests that S. filicinum should be reduced into a synonymy of S. horneri. The TMRCA analysis suggested that the divergence time of each clade may go back to the last interglacial period and a skyline
plot suggested that the last glacial maximum had only a small effect on the population size of S. horneri. The geographic subdivision of the three groups, in spite of a large amount of drifting mats, suggests a limited contribution
of drifting mats to gene flow on a large geographic scale. On a small geographic scale, a small number of haplotypes were
shared between S. horneri-type and S. filicinum-type populations. This result suggests that populations of these two types are partially, though not completely, isolated
from each other, possibly by selfing in S. filicinum-type populations or by a difference in peak reproduction. 相似文献

Spatio-temporal variability in settlement and recruitment, high mortality during the first life-history stages, and selection
may determine the genetic structure of cohorts of long-lived marine invertebrates at small scales. We conducted a spatial
and temporal analysis of the common Mediterranean Sea urchin Paracentrotus
lividus to determine the genetic structure of cohorts at different scales. In Tossa de Mar (NW Mediterranean), recruitment was followed
over 5 consecutive springs (2006–2010). In spring 2008, recruits and two-year-old individuals were collected at 6 locations
along East and South Iberian coasts separated from 200 to over 1,100 km. All cohorts presented a high genetic diversity based
on a fragment of mtCOI. Our results showed a marked genetic homogeneity in the temporal monitoring and a low degree of spatial
structure in 2006. In 2008, coupled with an abnormality in the usual circulation patterns in the area, the genetic structure
of the southern populations studied changed markedly, with arrival of many private haplotypes. This fact highlights the importance
of point events in renewing the genetic makeup of populations, which can only be detected through analysis of the cohort structure
coupling temporal and spatial perspectives. 相似文献

The 71 species of horseshoe bat (genus Rhinolophus) use echolocation calls with long constant-frequency (CF) components to detect and localize fluttering insects which they seize in aerial captures or glean from foliage. Here we describe ground-gleaning as an additional prey-capture strategy for horseshoe bats. This study presents the first record and experimental evidence for ground-gleaning in the little-studied Blasius horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus blasii). The gleaning bouts in a flight tent included landing, quadrupedal walking and take-off from the ground. The bats emitted echolocation calls continuously during all phases of prey capture. Both spontaneously and in a choice experiment, all six individuals attacked only fluttering insects and never motionless prey. These data suggest that R. blasii performs ground-gleaning largely by relying on the same prey-detection strategy and echolocation behaviour that it and other horseshoe bats use for aerial hawking. We also studied the Mediterranean horseshoe bat (R. euryale) in the flight tent. All four individuals never gleaned prey from the ground, though they appeared to be well able to detect fluttering moths on the ground. It is not known yet whether ground-gleaning plays a role in Mehelys horseshoe bat (R. mehelyi). In a performance test, we measured the ability of these three European species of middle-sized horseshoe bats (R. euryale, R. mehelyi and R. blasii) to take-off from the ground. All were able to take flight even in a confined space; i.e. the willingness to ground-glean in R. blasii is not related to a superior take-off performance. In contrast to ground-gleaning bats of other phylogenetic lineages, R. blasii appears not to be a specialist, but rather shows a remarkable behavioural flexibility in prey-capture strategies and abilities. We suggest that the key innovation of CF echolocation paired with behavioural flexibility in foraging strategies might explain the evolutionary success of Rhinolophus as the second largest genus of bat.Communicated by T. Morphological and behavioural traits can serve as anti-predator defence either by reducing detection or recognition risks,
or by thwarting initiated attacks. The latter defence is secondary and often involves a ‘startle display’ comprising a sudden
release of signals targeting more than one sensory modality. A suggested candidate for employing a multimodal defence is the
peacock butterfly, Inachis io, which, by wing-flicking suddenly, produces sonic and ultrasonic sounds and displays four large eyespots when attacked. The
eyespots make small birds retreat, but whether the sounds produced thwart predator attacks is largely unknown. Peacocks hibernate
as adults in dark wintering sites and employ their secondary defence upon encounter with small rodent predators during this
period. In this study, we staged predator–prey encounters in complete darkness in the laboratory between wild mice, Apodemus flavicollis and Apodemus sylvaticus, and peacocks which had their sound production intact or disabled. Results show that mice were more likely to flee from sound-producing
butterflies than from butterflies which had their sound production disabled. Our study presents experimental evidence that
the peacock butterfly truly employs a multimodal defence with different traits targeting different predator groups; the eyespots
target birds and the sound production targets small rodent predators. 相似文献

Morpho-functional features potentially involved in defence mechanisms against fish predators (i.e. attachment tenacity, spine length, and test robustness and thickness) have been assessed in two Mediterranean sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula. All four morpho-functional features were significantly and positively related to individual size for both species of sea urchins. Test robustness (i.e. static load needed to break sea urchin tests) was significantly greater for A. lixula (from 3,450 to 15,000 g depending on size) than for P. lividus (1,180–11,180 g). Attachment tenacity (i.e. force needed to dislodge sea urchins from the rocky substrate) was greater in A. lixula (280–3,300 g) than in P. lividus (110–1,450 g), and the difference tended to decrease in relation to smaller sea urchin size. Spine length was greater in A. lixula (1.5–2.9 cm) than in P. lividus (0.5–2.3 cm), but the difference decreased for larger sea urchin size. Test thickness was slightly greater (but not significantly) in A. lixula (0.35–1.10 mm) than in P. lividus (0.12–0.90 mm). These results provide evidence that morpho-functional features of sea urchins could be involved in affecting predation rates by fishes upon P. lividus and A. lixula, with potential implications for the population structure and distribution patterns of the two sea urchins in shallow rocky reefs.Communicated by R.
