The whelk Buccinum undatum L. in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence has a distinct annual reproductive cycle. The ovary and pallial oviduct of the female, and the seminal vesicle of the male, show parallel development, whereas the testis has an inverse cycle. Thus, at the end of winter when the ovary, pallial oviduct and seminal vesicle reach maximal size, the testis is small and undeveloped, whereas the reverse situation occurs in summer. This is the first report of a totally inverse relationship between the ovary and testis for a marine invertebrate. This unusual pattern is due to the long-term storage of sperm in the seminal vesicle of the male prior to copulation. There is no resting period at the end of oogenesis, but rather renewed ovarian development starts shortly after gamete release. By contrast, in the testis after transfer of sperm to the seminal vesicle at the end of spermatogenesis, there is a distinct period of phagocytosis. Mating begins in mid-May, reaches a peak during June and terminates prior to July. Egg laying begins in late May, reaches a peak in mid-June to mid-July and can continue until late August. Examination of the incidence of individuals with food in their stomachs showed that feeding activity is maximal in late autumn through to early spring and decreases sharply coincident with the onset of breeding in late May.  相似文献

There is accumulating evidence that maternal hormones may play a role in offspring sex adjustment, but little is known about the costs of such hormone-mediated mechanisms. Recent studies have reported sex-specific effects of hormones on offspring viability. Specifically, we previously found that elevating the plasma androgen level in mothers results in a male-biased offspring primary sex ratio, but it affects the viability of sons negatively and daughters positively in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata; Rutkowska and Cichoń, Anim Behav, 71:1283–1288, 2006). In this study, we studied further fitness consequences of exposure to elevated yolk androgen levels in zebra finches. We measured growth rate and cellular immune response of nestlings that hatched from eggs laid by females injected with testosterone during egg laying and nestlings of unaffected control females. We found that sons of testosterone-treated females grew slower in comparison to sons of control females. The significant interaction between experimental group and offspring sex indicates that sons of testosterone-treated mothers suffered impaired immune responsiveness while daughters seemed to benefit from elevated androgen level in terms of enhanced immune responsiveness. We found no effects of androgens on offspring performance at adulthood—neither fecundity of females nor attractiveness of males was affected. We conclude that the benefits of biasing sex ratio towards males by increasing androgen level in the yolk may be limited due to negative effects on male offspring performance early in life.  相似文献

Previously we reported that there are subfamily differences in drone production in queenless honey bee colonies, but these biases are not always explained by subfamily differences in oviposition behavior. Here we determine whether these puzzling results are best explained by either inadequate sampling of the laying worker population or reproductive conflict among workers resulting in differential treatment of eggs and larvae. Using colonies composed of workers from electrophoretically distinct subfamilies, we collected samples of adult bees engaged in the following behavior: true egg laying, false egg laying, indeterminate egg laying, egg cannibalism, or nursing (contact with larvae). We also collected samples of drone brood at four different ages: 0 to 2.5-h-old eggs, 0 to 24-h-old eggs, 3 to 8-day-old larvae, and 9 to 14-day-old larvae and pupae. Allozyme analyses revealed significant subfamily differences in the likelihood of exhibiting egg laying, egg cannibalism, and nursing behavior, as well as significant subfamily differences in drone production. There were no subfamily differences among the different types of laying workers collected from each colony, suggesting that discrepancies between subfamily biases in egg-laying behavior and drone production are not due to inadequate sampling of the laying worker population. Subfamily biases in drone brood production within a colony changed significantly with brood age. Laying workers had significantly more developed ovaries than either egg cannibals or nurses, establishing a physiological correlate for the observed behavioral genetic differences. These results suggest there is reproductive conflict among subfamilies and individuals within queenless colonies of honey bees. The implications of these results for the evolution of reproductive conflict, in both queenright and queenless contexts, are discussed.  相似文献

Experimental manipulations have revealed positive effects of litter reduction on offspring mass in small mammals, but little is known about this trade-off in large mammals. We examined the determinants of natural litter size variation and quantified the effects of litter size, maternal characteristics, and litter composition on yearling mass using 24?years of data on marked brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Sweden. Infanticide by adult males is a major cause of cub-of-the-year mortality, leading to litter size reductions. Litter size (n?=?265) at den emergence ranged from one to four cubs (average, 2.7) and increased with maternal age. Litter size, however, appeared independent of maternal size, population density, interlitter interval, study area, or previous litter sex ratio. Yearling body mass increased with maternal body size but was independent of litter sex ratio. Litter size and yearling mass were negatively correlated, mostly because singletons were about 30?% heavier than yearlings from litters of two to four cubs. In reduced litters, survivors were on average 8?% heavier as yearlings than individuals from intact litters, suggesting that sibling competition reduces growth. Trade-offs between litter size and yearling mass in bears appear similar in magnitude to those found in small mammals.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was used to examine whether a decrease in the width of sutures is the basis for shrinking of the test in echinoids under conditions of low food availability and whether the body condition of sea urchins is likely to be retained when shrinking occurs. This experiment was performed with H. erythrogramma specimens collected in January 1987 from Pt. Lillias in Corio Bay, Australia. Suture widths in the test and gonad volume were significantly less (relative to body volume) in Heliocidaris erythrogramma (Val.) in the low food treatment than the high food treatment after 4 mo. These results imply that sea urchins which shrink may have a poorer body condition and be less able to reproduce than sea urchins that do not shrink. A comparison of the expected to the observed changes in suture width showed that a decrease in suture width is involved in the shrinking of the test in H. erythrogramma and may be of sufficient magnitude to fully explain the observed reduction in test size. This suggests that the amount a sea urchin may shrink under low food conditions is constrained by the degree to which the sutures can be reduced in width.  相似文献

Parent–offspring conflict theory predicts the evolution of offspring solicitation signals that can influence the amount and/or the duration of parental investment. Short-term effects of offspring solicitation signals on parental food provisioning have been widely demonstrated, but persistent effects of offspring signals on the maintenance of parental care have been rarely studied. Also, the relation between the amount of care provided to the brood and how it is distributed among individual offspring within a brood is not well enough understood. Here, we investigated in the European earwig (Forficula auricularia) the effects of offspring condition-dependent chemical signals on the maintenance of maternal care among broods and the distribution of maternal food within broods. Mothers were isolated from their brood for 3 days and continuously exposed to chemical signals extracted from broods of experimentally manipulated nutritional state. After re-introducing mothers to their brood, a range of maternal behaviours were quantified. We found that earwig mothers groomed their offspring significantly more after exposure to chemical extract from high-food brood in comparison with mothers exposed to extract from low-food brood, which in turn displayed significantly more aggressive behaviour. Furthermore, we manipulated offspring individual nutritional condition within the brood to evaluate the effect of offspring state on the within-brood food distribution. Within broods, poorly fed individuals received significantly more food than well-fed individuals, probably due to scramble competition. These results show that earwig nymphs express multi-component condition-dependent signals and behaviours differentially affecting maternal care provisioned to the brood and the distribution of care within broods.  相似文献

Red coral (Corallium rubrum, L. 1758) is an over-exploited Mediterranean gorgonian. The gonadal development cycle of this gorgonian is examined at the Costa Brava (NW Mediterranean) taking into account for the first time colony size, depth and spatial horizontal variability. This study compares the gonad development and fertility in two colony size classes (colonies <6-cm height, and >10-cm height, both at 40–45-m depth), and two populations at different depths (16–18-m depth, and 40–45-m depth, both consisting of <6-cm high colonies) in a 15-month period. The fertility of seven size classes (<2 cm to >12 cm high colonies, in 2 cm intervals) was examined in the deep population, where large colonies were present. Furthermore, reproductive output was compared in 6 populations (distributed along more than 70-km coastline) one month before spawning (June). Red coral was found to be dioecious and gonochoric with a sex ratio of 1:1, which differs from other NW Mediterranean populations. On the other hand, fertility of different size classes indicates that small colonies of 2-cm height already produce gonads, which is in line with previous studies. Female and male polyp fertility and sperm sac size increase significantly with colony size [sperm sac diameter: 476±144 μm (mean±SD) and 305±150 μm in the >10-cm and <6-cm height colonies, respectively), whereas no significant effect on oocyte diameter was found (oocyte diameter: 373.7±18.7 μm). Depth staggered spawning, that is, an earlier release of gonads in the shallow populations, was observed in summer 2003, coinciding with the highest temperature gradient between shallow and deep water during the study period. Colonies of <6-cm height were significantly less fertile than colonies >12 cm, thus the recommendation of this study is that a minimum height should be incorporated into fishing regulations. The six studied populations at the Costa Brava showed a comparable reproductive potential, which demonstrates little variability within the homogenous population structure and range of size classes (due to overharvesting) found at the Costa Brava. The study of reproductive output is an important tool for ecosystem management, and this work recommends basing specific exploitation laws for distinctive populations on colony size, which is found to have a larger effect on reproductive potential than mesoscale variability. Summary Seasonal variation in mean hind tibia length and mean testes length is investigated in the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria (L.). There is a cycle in mean hind tibia length and mean testes length over a season. The body size curve peaks later than the testes length curve, showing that there is no fixed relationship between the two variables. The causes of variation in testes size and its influence on copula duration are experimentally examined. Increasing the number of Drosophila eaten per day leads to increased mature testes length. Males with larger testes copulate for longer than males with smaller ones, and smaller males copulate for longer than do larger males. While testes shrivel with successive copulas, copula duration remains constant. The more females a male is prepared to copulate with in a day (up to five), the longer he copulates with each. The shrinkage of the testes of males collected throughout a day suggests that males copulate with an average of 4 females per day. Traditionally, evolutionary ecology and conservation biology have primarily been concerned with how environmental changes affect population size and genetic diversity. Recently, however, there has been a growing realization that phenotypic plasticity can have important consequences for the probability of population persistence, population growth, and evolution during rapid environmental change. Habitat fragmentation due to human activities is dramatically changing the ecological conditions of life for many organisms. In this review, we use examples from the literature to demonstrate that habitat fragmentation has important consequences on oviposition site selection in insects, with carryover effects on offspring survival and, therefore, population dynamics. We argue that plasticity in oviposition site selection and maternal effects on offspring phenotypes may be an important, yet underexplored, mechanism by which environmental conditions have consequences across generations. Without considering the impact of habitat fragmentation on oviposition site selection, it will be difficult to assess the effect of fragmentation on offspring fitness, and ultimately to understand the impact of anthropogenic-induced environmental change on population viability.  相似文献

Relative body size (carapace width) and weapon size (chela length) were used as indicators of resource holding potential (RHP) in the agonistic behaviour of male shore crabs, Carcinus maenas (L.). Weapon size was found to be a more reliable predictor of the outcome of pairwise fights than body size. Crabs with longer chelae than their opponents were more likely to win fights than crabs with relatively larger bodies. Body size had less influence on the outcome of fights. Relative body and weapon size did not influence initiation of contests but did affect the likelihood of winning; however, this was significant only for weapon size. Winning crabs had heavier claws with greater surface area than losing crabs. There was no relationship between relative size and fight duration. The frequency of cheliped display increased with chela length and win- ners performed significantly more displays than losers. Seasonal changes in gonald size and stages of gametogenesis in the black abalone Haliotis cracheroidii were related to changes in environmental parameters. H. cracheroidii showed an annual reproductive cycle terminating in a synchronized spawning in late summer. Gametogenesis was initiated immediately after spawning. Gametes were present in the gonad through the winter months. Gametogenesis was initiated a second time in the spring months. Maximal gonad growth (to a gonad index of 20%) occurred during summer months prior to spawning. Changes in gonad size andperiods of initiation of gametogenesis revealed no apparent correlation with changes in seasonal water temperature. Changes in gonad size showed no apparent relation to change in day length. Total polysaccharide levels in foot tissue changed seasonally, indicating that food availability is probably not a factor in directly regulating gonad growth. Gonad index data for the chiton Katharina tunicata (collected over a 10 year period) showed no apparent correlation to seasonal change in water temperature.  相似文献

The investment made by a reproducing organism in its offspring can be affected by both extrinsic (environmental) and intrinsic (female condition) factors. The purpose of this study, conducted between December 1990 and June 1992, was to examine the influence of organic additions to sediment, and female age and size, on patterns of offspring investment and performance in the opportunistic polychaete Capitella sp. I (cf. Capitella capitata Farbricius). Sediment treatments were composed of marsh mud enriched with sewage or algae, or spiked with #2 fuel oil. All three of these additions are associated with opportunistic responses in Capitella sp. I populations in the laboratory and field. As a means of comparison,effects of sewage additions were also examined on the spionid Streblospio benedicti Webster. Organic additions to mud had no detectable effect on the C or N content of embryos in either species. However, sewage had a positive effect on juvenile performance in Capitella sp. I. Juveniles produced by adult Capitella sp. I in the sewage treatment grew 2 times larger (in 2 wk) than juveniles produced by adults in the mud treatment when these juveniles were raised in the same sediment type (mud). Such effects may facilitate opportunistic responses in Capitella sp. I offspring by reducing time to first reproduction. In addition to treatment sediment effects, maternal age and size had a strong influence on patterns of offspring investment in Capitella sp. I. The material investiment measured in collected embryos declined with maternal age in the oil and sewage treatments. The C:N ratio of embryos increased with maternal age for Capitella sp. I except in the algae treatment, which showed no effect of maternal age. Juvenile growth decreased with maternal age in the sewage treatment for Capitella sp. I. Maternal size appeared to have a positive effect on embryo investment in the mud and oil treatments, where reproducing worms were smallest. Previous studies of Capitella sp. I have documented a broad range of environmentally induced responses in growth and fecundity.The results of this study emphasize the importance of maternal environment, age, and size effects on the relationship between offspring investment and performance.Such effects may have profound consequences for the dynamics of populations and the fitness of individuals. We examined the relationship between lactation performance and infant growth in a captive population of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) that varied in both maternal and litter size. Though common marmosets display a typical primate pattern of dilute milk and relatively slow infant growth rates (factors associated with low daily lactation investment and minimal maternal size effects), we hypothesized that the marmoset's small body size would make lactation investment more sensitive to maternal size than is true for larger-bodied primates. Smaller mothers rearing twins had lower milk fat, lower gross energy in milk samples collected in mid to late lactation and lower nursing-bout frequencies than did large mothers nursing twins. Lactation performance and maternal behavior did not differ between large and small mothers when rearing singletons, with a single exception: small mothers had a lower gross energy in mid-lactation milk samples. Relative growth rates in twins but not singletons were affected by maternal size, such that small mothers supported more growth per infant when rearing singletons while large mothers supported more growth per infant when rearing twins. Among the larger mothers, only, older mothers supported somewhat, though not significantly, less growth per infant, regardless of litter size. Twin infants of small mothers appeared to respond to below-optimal levels of milk yield by initiating maternal carrying less often. The relative energy intake of mothers was similar regardless of litter or maternal size. Small mothers rearing twins drew more heavily on reserves, reflected in a linear weight loss during lactation; however, the reserves drawn upon were inadequate to meet the lactation demand, resulting in lower milk energy output. In addition, small mothers rearing twins were more likely to be ill and less likely to be fertile in the year following lactation than were large mothers of twins or mothers of any size rearing singletons.  相似文献

At least three general categories of environmental pressure - predation, resource distribution, and demographics - shape the costs and benefits of group-living for animals. Among the demographic factors that influence individual survival and reproduction, the composition of social groups can play an important role. Census data drawn from 26 populations of howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.) were used to determine if the composition of groups explained variation in their reproductive performance. Each group's reproductive performance was estimated by calculating the difference between the observed number of immatures and the number expected from its population average. Of four group structure variables tested, only one - the residual of the adult and subadult sex ratio - was a consistent correlate of reproductive performance across the howler monkey populations. Groups with a greater proportion of adult and subadult males contained more juveniles than expected from the population average. I propose that the survival or retention of immatures within howler monkey groups depends in part on the behavior of resident males. Of particular importance, the relative proportions of resident males and females were more informative than the absolute number of males or females. On this basis, I evaluate the possible role of males in protection from predation, conspecific aggression, and resource competition. The techniques used here can also be used to forecast major changes in demographic structure within populations.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the long-term fitness consequences of nestling size hierarchies in altricial birds. In this study, we investigated whether or not the size rank order of siblings influences subsequent breeding success in the little egret, Egretta garzetta. From a marking program allowing individual recognition of wild birds, we obtained data on the breeding success of 56 pairs comprising individuals for which the size rank order was known. The breeding success in these pairs was positively influenced by the age of the marked bird but negatively affected by the laying date of the pair and the size rank order of the marked individual. There was also a significant difference between breeding colonies. We suggest two main hypotheses for a link between size rank order of individuals and their breeding success and we discuss our results in relation to current hypotheses on the adaptive value of hatching asynchrony. A honeybee queen normally mates with 10–20 drones, and reproductive conflicts may arise among a colony’s different worker patrilines, especially after a colony has lost its single queen and the workers commence egg laying. In this study, we employed microsatellite markers to study aspects of worker reproductive competition in two queenless Africanized honeybee colonies. First, we determined whether there was a bias among worker patrilines in their maternity of drones and, second, we asked whether this bias could be attributed to differences in the degree of ovary activation of workers. Third, we relate these behavioral and physiological factors to ontogenetic differences between workers with respect to ovariole number. Workers from each of three (colony A) and one (colony B) patrilineal genotypes represented less than 6% of the worker population, yet each produced at least 13% of the drones in a colony, and collectively they produced 73% of the drones. Workers representing these genotypes also had more developed follicles and a greater number of ovarioles per ovary. Across all workers, ovariole development and number were closely correlated. This suggests a strong effect of worker genotype on the development of the ovary already in the postembryonic stages and sets a precedent to adult fertility, so that “workers are not born equal”. We hypothesize a frequency-dependent or “rare patriline” advantage to queenless workers over the parentage of males and discuss the maintenance of genetic variance in the reproductive capacity of workers.Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

Effects of the heavy metals zinc and cadmium on the free amino acid (FAA) pool of Gammarus pulex were studied at different metal concentrations and combinations as well as different exposure times. The dominant effect of these two metals was the reduction of most free amino acids and the whole FAA pool, except in the 10‐day low zinc and cadmium concentration exposures which resulted in a rise of free amino acid pool.

Among the free amino acids, the most sensitive to zinc exposure, were alanine, glutamic acid, arginine, and taurine; valine, leucine, asparagine, and isoleucine were among the most sensitive to cadmium. No predictable changes of individual free amino acids were shown in the mixed metals exposures. Elevation of taurine concentration was constant in seven of the eight treatments, it is suggested that this elevation may be related to the hepatopancreatic damage observed and induced synthesis of metallothioneins.  相似文献
