Sand shrimp, Crangon septemspinosa Say, are important to the trophic dynamics of coastal systems in the northwestern Atlantic. To evaluate predatory impacts of sand shrimp, daily energy requirements (J ind.–1 day–1) were calculated for this species from laboratory estimates of energy losses due to routine (RR), active (RA), and feeding (RSDA) oxygen consumption rates (J ind.–1 h–1), coupled with measurements of diel motile activity. Shrimp used in this study were collected biweekly from the Niantic River, Connecticut (41°33N; 72°19W) during late spring and summer of 2000 and 2001. The rates of shrimp energy loss due to RR and RA increased exponentially with increasing temperature, with the magnitude of increase greater between 6°C and 10°C (Q10=3.01) than between 10°C and 14°C (Q10=2.85). Rates of RR doubled with a twofold increase in shrimp mass, and RSDA was 0.130 J h–1+RR, irrespective of shrimp body size. Shrimp motile activity was significantly greater during dark periods relative to light periods, indicating nocturnal behavior. Nocturnal activity also increased significantly at higher temperatures, and at 20°C shifted from a unimodal to a bimodal pattern. Laboratory estimates of daily metabolic expenditures (1.7–307.4 J ind.–1 day–1 for 0.05 and 1.5 g wet weight shrimp, respectively, between 0°C and 20°C) were combined with results from previous investigations to construct a bioenergetic model and make inferences regarding the trophic positioning of C. septemspinosa. Bioenergetic model estimates indicated that juvenile and adult shrimp could meet daily energy demands via opportunistic omnivory, selectively preying upon items of high energy content (e.g. invertebrate and fish tissue) and compensating for limited prey availability by ingesting readily accessible lower energy food (e.g. detritus and plant material).Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at Communicated by J.P. Weekly samples were collected near Kingston, Jamaica in 27 m vertical hauls, using 200 and 64µm mesh plankton nets, from July 1985 to January 1987. Thirtytwo copepod species were identified; nauplii and all copepodite stages were enumerated. Total copepod abundance ranged from 2.56 to 87.3 × 104 m–2. The annual abundance cycle was bimodal with peaks in October–November and May–June corresponding to the rainy seasons. Mean annual copepodite biomass was 0.15 g AFDW m–2 ranging from 0.03 to 0.41 g AFDW m–2. Mean generation time (from egg to adult) at 28°C was 19.5 d for the common speciesCentropages velificatus, Paracalanus aculeatus, andTemora turbinata. Isochronal development was demonstrated for copepodites ofP. aculeatus andT. turbinata, but not forC. velificatus. Mean daily specific growth rates (G) were 0.63, 0.63, and 0.48 d–1 forC. velificatus, P. aculeatus, andT. turbinata, respectively. In general, daily specific growth rates decreased in the later copepodite stages. Thus, it is postulated that growth of later stages and egg production may be food limited. Annual copepodite production was estimated as 419 kJ m–2 yr–1, while annual exuvial production and naupliar production were 35 and 50 kJ m–2 yr–1, respectively. Egg production was estimated as 44% (184 kJ m–2 yr–1) of the total copepodite production. Thus, mean total annual copepod production was 688 kJ m–2 yr–1. This estimate is within the range of copepod production estimates in coastal temperate regions.  相似文献

The daily abundance of aloricate ciliates at Lime Cay, Jamaica, a shallow neritic site, ranged from 29 to 118 × 106 m–2 (0.97 to 3.93 × 106 m–3) between November 1985 and November 1986. Biomass was converted to kilojoules (1 kcal=4.1855 kJ) assuming 42% carbon, 20.15 kJ (g dry wt)–1, and 20% cell shrinkage. Biomass ranged from 0.40 to 3.00 kJ m–2 (13.3 to 100 J m–3; 0.28 to 2.08µg C l–1) with an annual mean of 1.11 kJ m–2 (36.8 J m–3; 0.764µg C l–1). Nanociliates (<20µm equivalent spherical diameter, ESD) dominated abundance, but microciliates (> 20µm ESD) dominated biomass.Strombidium, Strobilidium, Tontonia andLaboea species were conspicuous taxa. Annual production estimates of the aloricate assemblage, based on literature growth rates, ranged from 404 kJ m–2 yr–1 (37 J m–3 d–1) to 1614 kJ m–2 yr–1 (147 J m–3 d–1). A compromise estimate of 689 kJ m–2 yr–1 (i.e., 63 J m–3 d–1) is comparable to other estimates from tropical and subtropical regions. A model of annual energy flow through 11 planktonic compartments suggests the total ciliate assemblage (aloricates and tintinnines) to be as productive as metazoan herbivores and metazoan carnivores.  相似文献

Acute toxicity of ammonia was determined for cultured larval, postlarval, and wild adult lobsters (Homarus americanus) in 1988. Ammonia tolerance was found to increase with ontogenetic development. Based on 96-h LC50 values of 58 mg l–1 NH4 + + NH3 l–1 seawater (0.72 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage I larvae, 87 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (1.7 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage II larvae, 125 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.13 mg NH3) for Stage III larvae, 144 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.36 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage IV postlarvae, 377 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (5.12 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 5°C and 219 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (3.25 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 20°C, recommendations for safe levels of total ammonia and un-ionized ammonia were calculated using an application factor of 0.1. Effects of ammonia on osmoregulatory capacity were studied on postlarvae and adults. Ability of postlarvae and adults to hyper-regulate in low-salinity media decreased after exposure to ammonia. In postlarval lobsters, osmoregulatory capacity was significantly affected in ammonia concentrations exceeding 32 mg l–1. Osmoregulatory capacity in adult lobsters (5 and 20°C) was affected at 150 mg l–1. In postlarval lobsters, a minimum exposure time of 12 h was required to impair osmoregulatory capacity. The decrease in hemolymph osmotic pressure was caused by lower hemolymph sodium concentrations. The presence of ammonia in the external medium could markedly affect the Na+/NH4 + transport mechanism by permanently, temporarily, or partially impairing the transport sites for sodium.  相似文献

Fishes were trawled from Albatross Bay, on the west coast of Cape York, north Queensland (12°45S; 141°30E) during 4 yr, from August 1986 to April 1989. Penaeids were the first or second most important prey item by dry weight in 14 of the 34 penaeid-eating fish species, and in 12 of the species by frequency of occurrence. Eighteen species of Penaeidae were identified in fish stomachs. The five commercially important species comprised over 70% by dry weight of all the penaeids eaten by all the fishes;Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus semisulcatus andP. merguiensis comprised 22, 28 and 11%, respectively. Commercially unimportant penaeids comprised 85% by numbers of all penaeids eaten. Larger fishes ate larger penaeids, mainly commercially important species, while smaller fishes ate smaller penaeids, mainly commercially unimportant species. All penaeid-eating fishes also ate some teleost prey and many were primarily piscivorous. Most penaeid-eating fish species took more benthic prey than bentho-pelagic and pelagic prey combined. The fishes with the strongest predation impact on commercially important penaeids wereCaranx bucculentus and four species of elasmobranchs. The highest impact on commercially unimportant penaeids was made by several species of smaller but abundant fishes. An overall annual estimate of 2950 t yr–1 of commercially important penaeids is eaten by all fishes, a much higher figure than the average 870 t yr–1 taken by the fishery. This study highlights the need for accurate measurement of the abundance of penaeid predators as well as analyses of their diets when assessing the impact of predators on prawn stocks.  相似文献

Monthly samples were collected in oceanic waters off Discovery Bay, Jamaica, in 60- and 200-m vertical hauls, using 200- and 64-m mesh plankton nets, from June 1989 to July 1991. Length-weight regressions were derived for twelve genera of copepods (R2=0.79 to 0.97). For eight occasions spanning the study period, biomass estimates generated from these length-weight regressions differed by only 3% from direct weight determinations. The mean ash content of copepods was 7.1%, and the energy density was 20.8 kJ g-1 ash-free dry weight (AFDW). Mean annual biomass of the total copepod community in the upper 60 m was 1.83 mg AFDW m-3 (range 1.14 to 2.89 mg AFDW m-3), and for the 200-m water column was 0.96 mg AFDW m-3 (range 0.12 to 1.99 mg AFDW m-3). Estimates of generation times for five common taxa ranged from 16.1 to 33.4 d. None of the taxa investigated displayed isochronal development; in general, stage duration increased in later copepodite stages. Weight increments showed a significant decrease in later copepodite stages, but with strong reversal of the trend from stage 5 to adult female in most species. Daily specific growth rates also declined in later copepodite stages, and ranged from 1.49 d-1 in stage 1–2 Paracalanus/Clausocalanus spp. to 0.04 in stage 5-female of Oithona plumifera. Progressive food limitation of somatic copepodite growth and egg production is postulated. Naupliar production was 50.4 to 59.5% of copepodite production, and egg production was 35.1 to 27.7% of copepodite production in the 60-and 200-m water columns, respectively. Total annual copepod production, including copepodites, nauplii, eggs and exuviae, was 160 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the upper 60 m and 304 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the upper 200 m. Secondary production of the copepod community in oceanic waters off Discovery Bay approaches 50% of the corresponding value in tropical neritic waters.  相似文献

The -N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase, EC 3.2.1.52) from prawn (Penaeus vannamei) was purified by extraction with 30% ethanol solution and ammonium sulfate fractionation, then chromatographed on Sephadex G-100 followed by DEAE-cellulose (DE-32) columns. The purified enzyme determined to be homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and SDS-PAGE. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was 1,560 U mg–1. Enzyme molecular weight was determined to be 105,000 Da; it contained two subunits of the same mass (45,000 Da). The pI value was calculated to be 4.8 by isoelectric focusing. The optimum pH and optimum temperature of the enzyme for the hydrolysis of pNP--D-GlcNAc (enzyme substrate) were determined to be pH 5.2 and 45°C, respectively. The behavior of the enzyme during hydrolysis of pNP--D-GlcNAc followed Michaelis–Menten kinetics, with Km=0.254 mM and Vm=9.438 M min–1, at pH 5.2 and 37°C. The stability of the enzyme was investigated, and the results showed that the enzyme was stable in a pH range from 4.2 to 10.0 and at temperatures <40°C. The effects of metal ions on the enzyme were also studied. Li+, Na+ and K+ had no influence on enzyme activity. Mg2+, Ca2+ and Mn2+ activated the enzyme, while Ba2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+ Cu2+, Fe3+ and Al3+ showed various degrees of inhibitory effects on the enzyme.Communicated by O. The life-history of the crown-of thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) includes a planktotrophic larva that is capable of feeding on particulate food. It has been proposed, however, that particulate food (e.g. microalgae) is scarce in tropical water columns relative to the nutritional requirements of the larvae of A. planci, and that periodic shortages of food play an important role in the biology of this species. It has also been proposed that non-particulate sources of nutrition (e.g. dissolved organic matter, DOM) may fuel part of the nutritional requirements of the larval development of A. planci as well. The present study addresses the ability of A. planci larvae to take up several DOM species and compares rates of DOM uptake to the energy requirements of the larvae. Substrates transported in this study have been previously reported to be transported by larval asteroids from temperate and antarctic waters. Transport rates (per larval A. planci) increased steadily during larval development and some substrates had among the highest mass-specific transport rates ever reported for invertebrate larvae. Maximum transport rates (J max in) for alanine increased from 15.5 pmol larva–1 h–1 (13.2 pmol g–1 h–1) for gastrulas (J max in=38.7 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 47.4 pmol g–1 h–1) to 35.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (13.1 pmol g–1 h–1) for early brachiolaria (J max in just prior to settlement=350.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 161.1 pmol g–1 h–1) at 1 M substrate concentrations. The instantaneous metabolic demand for substrates by gastrula, bipinnaria and brachiolaria stage larvae could be completely satisfied by alanine concentrations of 11, 1.6 and 0.8 M, respectively. Similar rates were measured in this study for the essential amino acid leucine, with rates increasing from 11.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (or 9.4 pmol g–1 h–1) for gastrulas (J max in=110.5 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 94.4 pmol g–1 h–1) to 34.0 pmol larva–1 h–1 (or 13.0 pmol g–1 h–1) for late brachiolaria (J max in=288.9 pmol larva–1 h–1 or 110.3 pmol g–1 h–1) at 1 M substrate concentrations. The essential amino acid histidine was transported at lower rates (1.6 pmol g–1 h–1 at 1 M for late brachiolaria). Calculation of the energy contribution of the transported species revealed that larvae of A. planci can potentially satisfy 0.6, 18.7, 29.9 and 3.3% of their total energy requirements (instantaneous energy demand plus energy added to larvae as biomass) during embryonic and larval development from external concentrations of 1 M of glucose, alanine, leucine and histidine, respectively. These data demonstrate that a relatively minor component of the DOM pool in seawater (dissolved free amino acids, DFAA) can potentially provide significant amounts of energy for the growth and development of A. planci during larval development.  相似文献

Characterisation of the leachate originating from the Ano Liosia landfill (situated in Attica region, Greece) as well as assessment on the quality of the local aquifer were carried out. The experimental results showed that most of the parameters examined in the leachate samples such as colour, conductivity, TS, COD, NH3–N, PO4–P, SO4 2–, Cl, K+, Fe and Pb were found in high levels. The organic load was quite high since the COD concentrations were in the range of 3250–6125mgL–1. In addition, the low BOD/COD ratio (0.096–0.195), confirmed that the majority of this organic matter is not easily biodegradable. The groundwater near the landfill site was characterised as not potable and not suitable for irrigation water, since most of the physical and chemical parameters examined – such as colour, conductivity, DS, hardness, Cl, NH3–N, COD, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Fe, Ni and Pb exceeded the permissible limits given by EE, EPA and the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, this study presents the application of the hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) model for the determination of the yearly leakage from the base of the landfill after the final capping.  相似文献

Constructing realistic energy budgets for Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is hampered by the lack of data on the metabolic costs associated with swimming. In this study respiration rates and pleopod beating rates were measured at six current speeds. Pleopod beating rates increased linearly with current speed, reaching a maximum of 6 beats s–1 at 17 cm s–1. There was a concomitant linear increase in respiration rate, from 1.8 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 3 cm s–1 to 8.0 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 17 cm s–1. The size of the group tested (50, 100 and 300 krill) did not have a significant effect on pleopod beating rates or oxygen consumption (ANCOVA, F=0.264; P>0.05). The cost of transport reached a maximum of 75 J g–1 km–1 at 5 cm s–1, and then decreased with increasing current speed to 29 J g–1 km–1. When considered in light of energy budgets for E. superba, these data indicate that the cost of swimming could account for up to 73% of total daily metabolic expenditure during early summer.Communicated by G.F. This investigation was carried out to determine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the Kirkgeçit and Ozancik hot springs. The study areas are located northeast and southwest of the town of Çan, Çanakkale. During the investigation, geological maps of the hot springs and its surroundings were prepared, and hot waters and rock samples were collected from the study sites. The Paleogene–Neogene aged andesite, trachyandesite, andesitic tuff, silicified tuff and tuffites form the basement rocks in the Ozancik hot spring area. In the Kirkgeçit hot spring area, there are Lower Triassic aged mica and quartz schists at the basement rocks. The unit is covered by limestones and marbles of the same age. They are overlain by Quaternary alluvial deposits. A chemical analysis of the Kirkgeçit hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (1200.2 mg L–1), Cl (121.7 mg L–1), HCO3 (32.5 mg L–1), Na+ (494 mg L–1), K+ (30.2 mg L–1), Ca2+ (102 mg L–1), Mg2+ (15.2 mg L–1), and SiO2 (65.22 mg L–1). Chemical analysis of the Ozancik hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (575 mg L–1), Cl (193.2 mg L–1), HCO3 (98.5 mg L–1), Na+ (315 mg L–1), K+(7.248 mg L–1), Ca2+ (103 mg L–1), Mg2+ (0.274 mg L–1), and SiO2(43.20 mg L–1). The distribution of ions in the hot waters on the Schoeller diagram has an arrangement of r(Na++K+)>rCa2+>rMg2+ and r(SO4 2–)>rCl>r(HCO3 ). In addition, the inclusion of Fe2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Hg2+ in the hot water samples indicates potential natural inorganic contamination. The water analysis carried out following the ICPMS-200 technique was evaluated according to the World Health Organisation and Turkish Standards. The use and the effects of the hot water on human health are also discussed in the paper.  相似文献

Transbranchial potentials (TP) and sodium or chloride fluxes were measured in an apparatus designed for the simultaneous perfusion of eight isolated gills of Uca rapax. In anterior gills perfused with U. rapax–saline (US) the TP varied almost linearly from-7.5 to +10 mV inside, and in posterior gills from +2 to-8.5 mV (inside), on exposure to salinities ranging from 8.7 through 52, i.e. 25 to 150% seawater (100%=34.6 S). Sodium influx and efflux in anterior gills exposed to US, 8.7 or 43.3 S (0.7 to 4.0 mmol h–1 g–1 dry wt) were always greater than in posterior gills (0.5 mmol h–1). The chloride fluxes were slightly smaller than sodium fluxes in anterior gills, while in the posterior gills the chloride influx (2.8 to 4.6 mmol h–1) was always larger than chloride efflux (0.6 to 1.1 mmol h–1) or the sodium fluxes. At least three ion-transport mechanisms may be present in these gills: (1) an internal ( = basolateral), ouabain-sensitive Na+, K+ pump, restricted to anterior gills; (2) a furosemide-sensitive Na+, K+, 2Cl (plus water) transporter, apparently restricted to posterior gills, and (3) a Na+ exchanger (and possibly other as yet unidentified ion transporters, as suggested by large increases of the chloride influxes caused by amiloride), probably located on the apical membranes of the epithelial cells of both gill types. The differential selectivity of the gills of U. rapax for sodium or chloride may limit the transbranchial movements of either ion, without a reduction of the overall permeability of these crabs.Communicated by N.H. In the marine green alga Ulva rigida C. Agardh, nitrate reductase (NR) is synergetically induced by blue light and nitrate. The present study examines the effect of blue light and a large NO 3 pulse (0.3 mM) on relevant variables of NO 3 -assimilation such as NO 3 -uptake, intracellular NO 3 -storage, NR activity, in vivo NO 3 -reduction rate and NO 2 and NH 4 + -accumulation. Nitrate uptake started immediately upon addition of NO 3 , suggesting the presence of a constitutive carrier, however in the first 1.5 to 2 h, periods of net NO 3 efflux were frequent. After this time, NO 3 -uptake and intracellular NO 3 -accumulation proceeded linearly with time, suggesting the existence of a different NO 3 -uptake mechanism, which seems to be inducible. Our results indicate that in vivo NO 3 -reduction is not exclusively dependent on the potential NR activity. In U. rigida, during the first 2 h after a NO 3 pulse (300 M) there were clear indications that the induction state of the NO 3 -carrier limits the reduction rate of NO 3 . Once the induction of the NO 3 -transporter had been completed (1.5 to 2 h), the NO 3 -assimilation pathway reached a steady state, NO 3 -uptake rate, NO 3 -reduction rate and NO 2 and NH 4 + -accumulation being linear with time. Since the reduction of NO 3 leads mainly to the accumulation of NH 4 + , we conclude that, after the NO 3 -reduction itself, NH 4 + -fixation into carbon skeletons is the limiting step in the assimilation of NO 3 by U. rigida under blue light.  相似文献

An annual energy budget was constructed for individual adult barnacles (Balanus glandula Darwin) for the first year after settlement. The production of body tissue, egg, shell, aquatic and aerial respiration, molting and faecal production was determined and consumption was derived from the summation of these budget items. To provide an estimation of the accuracy of the budget equation, energy budgets were constructed for three small groups of barnacles (n=40) kept under laboratory conditions, in which the budget items, including consumption, were determined independently. The results of the laboratory energy budgets indicated that consumption values derived from the summation methods for the three groups of barnacles were 7.4% higher and 16.2 and 15.6% lower than those determined by actual feeding experiments. The average consumption, assimilation and production of individual barnacles were estimated to be 699.5, 647.3 and 159.6 cal year–1, respectively. B. glandula has an exceptionally high assimilation efficiency (92.5% from the annual budget and 99.3% from the laboratory budgets) but a low gross production efficiency (22.8%) and net production efficiency (24.7%). A very large proportion of energy (67.4%) was lost in respiration. The second most important budget item was egg production (12.3%); followed in decreasing order by: shell production (6.6%)> production of body tissue (3.9%)>molting (2.3%).This paper was presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, San Francisco, 1977, and received the Award for Excellence for the best student paper.  相似文献

The Narim gold mine is located approximately 200km southeast of Seoul within the Sulcheon mineralised district in the Yeongnam massif, Korea. In this study, environmental geochemical analyses were undertaken for soil, sediment and water samples collected in April, September and November in 1998 from the Narim mine creek. The mine area consists mainly of granitic gneiss; however, mineral constituents of soil and sediment near the mine were mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, some pyrite and clay minerals. Also were found some pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, malachite, goethite, various hydroxide and unidentified secondary minerals. Generally, high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and sediment are correlated with a high proportion of secondary minerals. Hydrochemical compositions of water samples are characterised by relative significant enrichment of Na++K+ and alkali metals in the ground water, whereas the surface and mine waters are relatively enriched in Ca2++Mg2+ and heavy metals. Anion contents of the ground waters are typically enriched in HCO3 , NO3 and Cl, whereas the surface and mine waters are highly enriched in HCO3 and SO4 2–. The pH and EC values of the surface water from the non-mine creek are relatively lower compared with those of the surface water around the mine and waste dump. The range of D and 18O values (d parameters) of the water samples are shown in distinct two groups for the April waters of 10.1–13.1, and for the November waters of 5.8–7.9, respectively. This range variation indicates that two group water were composed of distinct waters because of seasonal difference. Geochemical modelling showed that mostly heavy toxic metals may exist largely in the form of free metal (M2+) and metal-sulphate (MSO4 2–), and SO4 2– concentration influenced the speciation of heavy metals in the mine water. These metals in the ground water could be formed of CO3 and OH complex ions. Using a computer program, saturation indices of albite, calcite, dolomite in mostly surface water show undersaturated and progressively evolved toward the saturation state, however, ground and mine waters are nearly saturated. The gibbsite, kaolinite and smectite are supersaturated in the surface and ground water, respectively. Calculated water-mineral reaction and stabilities suggest that the weathering of silicate minerals may be stable kaolinite. The clay minerals of K-illite and Na-smectite will be transformed to more stable kaolinite owing to the continuous reaction.  相似文献

We studied Na+/K+ ATPase activity and ultrastructure in gills of the hyper-hypo-regulating crab Chasmagnathus granulatus Dana, 1851 acclimated to different salinities: 10, 30 and 45, known to be hypo-, iso-, and hyper-osmotic to the hemolymph, respectively. After centrifugation of homogenates at 11,000 g, Na+/K+–ATPase activity was almost entirely found in the pellets from the posterior (6–8) and anterior (3–5) gills, whereas very little was detected in the supernatant liquid. Specific activity of gill 6 was 41.3, 30.2, and 28.2 µmol Pi h–1 mg prot–1 for crabs acclimated to 10, 30, and 45, respectively, the result for 10 being significantly higher than those at 30 and 45. Although the concentration of sodium at which the reaction rate is half-maximal (K M) was similar in the three acclimation salinities, only the enzyme from crabs acclimated to 10 was inhibited by high sodium concentration. Specific activity of gill 5 increased with the increment in external salinity (10.1, 15, and 18.1 µmol Pi h–1 mg prot–1 for 10, 30, and 45, respectively), the only significant difference being that between the extreme salinities. The epithelium thickness of the dorsal portion of gill 6 showed a variation among salinities: 21.7, 15.8 and 17.2 µm for 10, 30 and 45, respectively. There were significant differences in epithelium thickness between the 10 and the other salinities. In all three salinities, the ultrastructure of gill 6 epithelium showed a high density of mitochondria, estimated by their volume fraction (Vv m=0.307–0.355). These mitochondria were packed between extensive basolateral membrane interdigitations in ionocytes and pillar cells. Gill 5 showed three cell types: pillars which possess mitochondria packed between membrane folds only in their interdigitations with neighbouring cells; type-I cells 8.0 µm thick with low density of mitochondria (Vv m=0.088), and type-II cells, 9.9 µm thick and rich in mitochondria (Vv m=0.423), but lacking basolateral interdigitations. Vv m of type-I cells of gill 5 was significantly lower than those of type-II cells of the same gill and the ionocytes of gill 6. No significant difference in Vv m was detected between the latter cell types.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

A field project encompassing wet-only rainwater sampling was initiated as a bilateral Fiji/Australia activity. Normally, biweekly samples were collected, using a wet-only rainwater sampler, and analysed for H+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, NH4 +, Cl, NO3 , SO4 2–, PO4 3-, methane sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid and acetic acid. The pH of the rainwater ranged between 5.730 and 4.480 with an average value of 5.176, slightly lower than the pH of unpolluted rainwater saturated with atmospheric CO2(pH = 5.650). Na+and Clwere the major ions with average concentrations of 98.15 M and 109.57 M respectively. There is an excellent correlation between the cation sum (average 147.71 eq L-1) and the anion sum (average 142.12 eq L-1) attesting to the quality of the data generated. This paper presents the detailed results of the study for a relatively clean remote island site in Suva, Fiji, latitude 18° 09 S, longitude 178° 27 E, height 6 m, and outlines prospects for further work.  相似文献

A Southampton Water (England) population of Melinna palmata Malmgren was studied from July 1978 to March 1980. M. palmata is a gregarious sedentary polychaete living in muddy substratum. The distribution of the polychaete in Southampton Water was related to the silt content of the sediment. The species occurs in sediments of <60% silt, it is dioecious, and the gametes are shed during a prolonged breeding season throughout the year, with peaks in March and July. Mature oocytes measure between 180 and 240 m in diameter at spawning, and fertilization is external. Unshed oocytes are resorbed. Annual secondary ary production was 0.42 gC m–2yr–1 and the P:B ratio was 2.19.  相似文献

Swimming efficiency (the ratio of thrust power required to overcome hydrodynamic drag to net metabolic energy expenditure) was calculated for the vertically migrating euphausiid Euphausia pacifica swimming at speeds of 1–20 cm s–1 and at temperatures of 8° and 12°C. Efficiencies ranged from 0.014 to 2.8% at 8°C and 0.009 to 1.69% at 12°C. A comparison with efficiency in fishes 2–3 orders of magnitude larger in weight (efficiency range 10–25%) indicates that locomotion in E. pacifica is far less efficient, a probable result of the organism's small size (x=33.5 mg WW) and multiple-paddle mode of propulsion. Net cost of transport of E. pacifica is three to six times the cost of a hypothetical value for sockeye salmon. Low swimming efficiencies in zooplankton such as E. pacifica are responsible for the underestimation of zooplankton swimming costs. Multiple-paddle propulsion is less efficient than the undulatory mode of fishes.  相似文献

Primary production of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile was measured by lepidochronological analyses at 22 sites in the Mediterranean Sea (Corsica, France, Italy, Sardinia and Turkey), between 1983 and 1992, to determine spatial and temporal variations. Leaf production (blade and sheath) ranged from 310 to 1 540 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1, depending on site and depth. Rhizome production ranged from 24 to 120 mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1 (6% of average leaf production). At some sites the results obtained by lepidochronological analysis were consistent with earlier results obtained by classic methods (e.g. leaf-marking). While primary production per shoot (mg dry wt shoot–1 yr–1) displayed no significant differences between sites, primary production of the P. oceanica meadow (g dry wt m–2 yr–1) decreased with increasing depth at all sites studied. This decrease correlated with reduced density of the meadow (number of shoots per m2) with increasing depth. Past primary production was also extrapolated at three sites at the island of Ischia (Italy) for a period of 5 yr in order to determine interannual variations over a period of several years. While major variations were recorded for the surface stations (5 and 10 m depth), production remained stable at the deepest station (20 m depth). Given the large geographical scale of the study (location, depth range), it would appear that while P. oceanica production remains considerable, the values recorded in the literature on the basis of classical analyses (surface stations) represent maxima, and cannot be generalised for meadows as a whole.  相似文献
