A study of the homogeneity between putative stocks of Phocoena phocoena in the North Sea and inner Danish waters was performed using isozyme electrophoresis. Two polymorphic systems, mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM) were used in the analysis. A two-locus homogeneity test showed an effect of season and locality on the genotypic distribution. This led to a division of the total sample into season and into the two localities, the inner Danish waters (IDW) and the North Sea. The samples were then compared to the Hardy-Weinberg expectations where a deficit in heterozygotes was observed in the North Sea sample in both systems and at the Pgm locus in the total sample, indicating a mixing of sub-populations. A hierarchical contingency table analysis, also based on the genotypic distribution, showed a combined effect of season and locality and only an insignificant effect of sampling period, thus supporting the division into season and locatily. The seasonal effect is further supported by earlier observations of a seasonal migration of harbour porpoises out of the Baltic in winter. A significant difference was observed between the two supposed sub-populations, IDW-summer and North Sea-summer samples, based on the genotypic distribution. This could also be a reflection of the sample sizes. On the basis of samples obtained from Canada, West Greenland and Holland a preliminary study of the population structure on a larger scale, comprising the North East and North West Atlantic, was performed. The results so far accord well with the hitherto accepted sub-populations of P. phocoena in the North Atlantic. 相似文献

In the North Atlantic, 14 regional subpopulations have been proposed for the harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758). To what degree these populations experience genetic interchange is relatively unknown, particularly on
the larger scale of the North Atlantic as a whole. With the recent completion of several regional genetic studies on population
structure of the harbor porpoise in the North Atlantic, came the opportunity to combine datasets in an effort to broaden the
geographic scope of focus. Three datasets comprised of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences, representing the Northeast
and Northwest Atlantic regions were pooled and reanalyzed to examine the degree of trans-Atlantic exchange among harbor porpoise
populations, and to examine the evolutionary history of the species in the North Atlantic. The movement of harbor porpoises
across the Atlantic appears to occur at a low level. Genetic variability in the Northeast Atlantic is significantly lower
than in the Northwest Atlantic, and may indicate a more recent recolonization for the Northeast Atlantic. The star phylogeny
of northeastern haplotypes, with a number of rare haplotypes closely related to the most abundant type, indicates a recent
population expansion. A disjunction in haplotypic frequencies between the Northeast and Northwest Atlantic probably occurs
east of Greenland, but the exact location and source of the disjunction has yet to be determined.

The movements of nine harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena (L.), in the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine were tracked using satellite telemetry. Transmitters were attached to the porpoises
in August 1994 and 1995 after they were captured near Grand Manan Island at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Tracking periods
ranged from 2 to 212 d (mean 50 ± 65 d). Porpoises exhibited a high degree of individual variation in movement patterns; five
moved out of the Bay of Fundy into the Gulf of Maine. The porpoise with the longest tracking period moved extensively throughout
the Gulf of Maine. These data suggest that seasonal movement patterns of individual harbour porpoises are discrete and are
not temporally coordinated migrations. Porpoises that moved out of the Bay of Fundy into the Gulf of Maine did so following
the 92 m isobath, which may represent an important movement corridor. The movement of porpoises from the Bay of Fundy into
the Gulf of Maine supports the hypothesis that harbour porpoises from these two regions comprise a single population at risk
of entanglement in both Canadian and US fisheries.

Incidental mortality of harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena, from captures in fishing gear has been documented consistently as severe in some European waters. Since fishing effort varies
greatly among regions, management units must be defined for more effective conservation of this species. In this study, analysis
of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction fragments was performed to investigate the population structure of harbour porpoises
in the Baltic Sea, the joint Kattegat–Skagerrak Seas and off the west coast of Norway. Mitochondrial DNA of 65 harbour porpoises
collected from three regions was analysed with nine restriction enzymes. Analysis of the heterogeneity in the frequency distribution
of haplotypes among provisional subpopulations revealed significant differences, which supports the recognition of three different
subpopulations and thus three separate management units. Furthermore, indices of haplotypic diversity (range: 0.211 to 0.628)
and nucleotide diversity (range: 0.070 to 0.168) of these provisional subpopulations were much lower than for western North
Atlantic subpopulations, which is consistent with the view that harbour porpoises in European waters, particularly in the
Baltic Sea, are depleted.

In July 2012, a ship-board double-platform line-transect survey was conducted to assess harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) abundance in the Kattegat, Belt Seas and the Western Baltic. A total of 826 km of track lines were surveyed between the 2nd and 21st of July 2012, and 169 observations were made by the primary observers, comprising a total of 230 porpoises. Fifty-seven observations were identified as duplicate sightings observed by both tracker and primary observers and were used to correct for availability and perception bias of the primary detections. Using Mark–Recapture Distance Sampling analysis, we produced a model using the half-normal key function, including sightability as the only covariate to estimate the density and abundance of harbour porpoise within the 51,511 km2 survey area. Estimated detection probability on the transect line, known as g(0), was at 0.571 (±0.074; CV = 0.130). Using a point independence model of the detection function, the abundance of harbour porpoises within the survey area was estimated at 40,475 animals (95 % CI 25,614–65,041, CV = 0.235) with an associated density of 0.786 animals km?2 (95 % CI 0.498–1.242, CV = 0.235) and an average group size of 1.488 animals. These results reflect densities obtained during the SCANS surveys in 1994 and 2005, indicating no significant population trend in the area. However, it should be noted that the survey area covers more than one population and that results are therefore not necessarily reflecting local population trends. Until proper population borders are obtained, the abundance estimate provides baseline data for future monitoring and is an important input to the assessment of the conservation status of harbour porpoises in the area. 相似文献

Relatively few insects have invaded the marine environment, and only five species of sea skaters, Halobates Eschscholtz (Hemiptera: Gerridae), have successfully colonized the surface of the open ocean. All five species occur in the
Pacific Ocean, H. germanus White also occurs in the Indian Ocean, whereas H. micans Esch- scholtz is the only species found in the Atlantic Ocean. We sequenced a 780 bp long region of the mitochondrial cytochrome
oxidase subunit I gene (COI) for a total of 66 specimens of the five oceanic Halobates species. Our purpose was to investigate the genetic variation within species and estimate the amount of gene flow between
populations. We defined 27 haplotypes for H. micans and found that haplotype lineages from each of the major oceans occupied by this species are significantly different, having
sequences containing five to seven unique base substitutions. We conclude that gene flow between populations of H. micans inhabiting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean is limited and hypothesize that these populations have been separated
for 1 to 3 million years. Similarly, there may be limited gene flow between H. germanus populations found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and between H. sericeus populations inhabiting the northern and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, we discuss our findings in relation
to recent hypotheses about the influence of oceanic diffusion on the distribution and population structure of oceanic Halobates spp.

Nitrogen fixation in the euphotic zone of the ocean was measured by C2H2 reduction and 15N2 incorporation associated with Trichodesmium sp. and also with Richelia intracellularis occurring within the cells of Rhizosolenia styliformis var. longispina, and R. cylindrus. The vertical distribution of N2 fixation activity, N2-fixing species, particulate matter and dissolved nutrients was measured. The effects of light intensity, sample concentration, length of incubation, and nutrient enrichment on the rates of C2H2 reduction were determined. Estimates of the importance of N2 fixation in adding previously uncycled nitrogen to the euphotic zone are given. 相似文献

The Keratoisidinae are a poorly known, but phenotypically diverse group of deepwater corals. Recent developments in deepwater trawling in the southwest Pacific have provided many more specimens of bamboo corals. Two sub-regions of the mitochondrial genome were sequenced to test genetic relationships among specimens collected over a wide geographical range (27–50° S): a sub-region of the large-subunit rRNA (16S rRNA), characterized by a highly variable insertion/deletion (INDEL#2) region; and a non-coding region between COII and COI. Based on DNA haplotypes, 14 species of Keratoisidinae were recognized among 88 specimens from deep water in the southwest Pacific Ocean. The common haplotypes also appeared in specimens collected in the northwest Pacific Ocean and may indicate that some bamboo coral species are widespread in the Pacific, or that the mitochondrial markers are insensitive to recent speciation events. Many specimens were taken from flat bottom areas and, contrary to assumptions, the bamboo corals are not endemic to seamounts. The closure of some seamounts to trawling will protect bamboo corals from extinction, but not from local depletion.Communicated by M.S. Johnson, Crawley 相似文献

The report includes quantitative and qualitative data on the phytoplankton from the First Canadian Transpacific Oceanographic Cruise from March to May 1969. Nanoplanktonic species (<20 m) were numerically dominant and, together with nertic diatoms, made up the larger portion of the biomass at all stations outside the Western Subarctic and Alaskan Gyres, where Denticulopsis seminae predominated. The nanoplankton consisted mainly of haptophycean, dinophycean and cryptophycean flagellates. Tropical oceanic dinoflagellates and diatoms were abundant in the net samples from Station 17 in the warm Kuroshio current but absent from Stations 24–27 in the Western Subarctic Gyre, Stations 2, 37–39 in the Alaskan Gyre, in which cold water oceanic species predominated, and Stations 31 and 33, south of the Aleutians. Organochlorines and heavy metals in the harbour seal Phoca vitulina from the German North Sea Coast 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Samples of various tissues and organs from healthy, sick and dead harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) from the North German Waddensea collected during the years 1974–1976 were analysed for copper, zinc, total mercury, cadmium lead, and organochlorine pesticide residues (PCB, DDT, Lindane and Dieldrin). The investigations were carried out in order to increase our knowledge about the actual degree of heavy metal and organochlorine pesticide accumulation in these animals. The study was also directed towards a comparison of healthy and sick young seals and those found dead for a possible relation between the condition and concentration of polutants in the organs. There was great variation within all series of compounds investigated, but in general the analytical data obtained indicated that high amounts of heavy metals and organochlorine pesticides can be present even in young seals. An age-specific increase in the mercury and cadmium content in liver samples could be demonstrated. The results are compared with data published by British and Dutch authors for other North Sea regions, and with a few exceptions, no significant differences can be established: cadmium (kidney) and DDT (blubber) contents in areas off the British coast are usually higher than corresponding values for seals from the German coast. There was no clear evidence that the concentrations of any of the compounds investigated had negative effects on the health of the seals. However, possible combined effects cannot be excluded. 相似文献

Specimens of the abyssal grenadier Coryphaenoides armatus (Hector, 1875), from the western North Atlantic and eastern North Pacific Oceans were compared electrophoretically at 27 presumptive gene loci. At 6 of the 7 polymorphic loci there were only minor differences in allelic frequencies but a nearly fixed difference was found at one locus, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. Eastern North Pacific grenadiers typically have a narrower interorbital space, a shorter dorsal interspace, more soft rays in the 1st dorsal fin (9–10 versus 8–9) and more pelvic fin rays (21–23 versus 18–21) than grenadiers from the western North Atlantic (as well as grenadiers from the eastern South Pacific, which were included in the biometric analysis). There is an apparent disjunction in the distribution of C. armatus in the eastern Pacific at the Gulf of Panamá which coincides with the change of morphology. It is suggested that North Pacific grenadiers comprise a subspecies, C. armatus variabilis Günther, 1878, which is morphologically distinct from the subspecies C. armatus armatus (Hector, 1875) of the other areas. 相似文献

Patterns of species structure are described for the larval fish assemblage in the North Pacific Central Gyre. About 30,000 larvae, primarily of mesopelagic fish species, were identified for 7 cruises. Samples were collected using Isaacs-Kidd plankton trawls on 6 cruises over a 4 1/2 year period; stratified samples were taken with an opening/closing bongo net on one late-summer cruise. Data on absolute and relative abundances, size ranges and summertime depth distributions of over 150 species of larvae are presented. The depth distribution and abundance of the ichthyoplankton are compared to those of the total zooplankton community. The larval assemblage is also examined with respect to the known adult mesopelagic fish assemblage. Seasonal changes in ichthyoplankton species structure occur but, within seasons, species structure is remarkably constant from year to year. Despite seasonal changes in species abundance and rank order of abundance, a constant cumulative frequency structure was found to exist in the ichthyoplankton, both between seasons and between years. The implications of this result are discussed in light of similar findings in a terrestrial community and with respect to possible mechanisms of regulation. 相似文献

The uptake rates of the three nitrogen compounds ammonium, nitrate, and urea were measured in the oligotrophic North Central Pacific Gyre in August–September 1985. The measurements were performed by using 15N-labelled substrates and incubating for short-time periods (3 to 4 h) under simulated in situ conditions. Ambient concentrations of the nitrogenous nutrients were generally below 0.10 mol l-1. The average total daily nitrogen uptake rate, integrated over the euphotic zone, was 12.5 mmol N m-2 d-1. Diel studies in the upper water mass resulted in a calculated phytoplankton growth rate of 1.3 d-1. Ammonium was the dominating nutrient, accounting for on the average 54% of the total nitrogen uptake, while urea uptake represented 32% and nitrate 14%. Ammonium uptake rates at a coastal station off the Hawaiian Islands were very close to the rates found at the oceanic station. Organisms <3 m dominated the nitrogen assimilation, being responsible for about 75% of the ammonium uptake. The nitrogen uptake rates in this study seem to be higher than those found by earlier investigations in the area, but correlated well with other productivity measurements performed during the same cruise. 相似文献

We studied the genetic structure of the Mediterranean killifish Aphanius fasciatus. Analysis of the sequence variation in a 372-bp portion of the mitochondrial control region in 623 fish from 27 sampling sites along the species’ distributional range (Tyrrhenian coast, Sardinia, Sicily, Adriatic coast, Malta, Tunisia, and Greece) yielded 120 distinct haplotypes. Most of the haplotypes are unique, and only 15 % are shared among different populations. The high F ST value (=0.80) suggests a strong population genetic structuring. The phylogenetic analysis based on Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony, and the median-joining network show a sharp separation of the Southeastern Sicilian populations (belonging to the Hyblean region) and of the fluvial Tunisian population of Rio Melah from the others. The Adriatic, the Eastern Sicilian, and the Greek populations are well differentiated, while the group of populations from the Central-Western Mediterranean does not show a clear pattern of differentiation. Our findings indicate that the current genetic structuring of A. fasciatus reflects historical geographical patterns occurring within the Mediterranean basin from the Late Miocene to the Pleistocene. The presence of divergent evolutionary entities in the Hyblean region and the Tunisian Rio Melah supports their inclusion as target areas for the conservation of A. fasciatus. 相似文献

Strategies to reduce, halt, and reverse global declines in marine biodiversity are needed urgently. We reviewed, coded, and synthesized historical and contemporary marine conservation strategies of the Kitasoo/Xai'xais First Nation in British Columbia, Canada to show how their approaches work. We assessed whether the conservation actions classification system by the Conservation Measures Partnership was able to encompass this nation's conservation approaches. All first-order conservation actions aligned with the Kitasoo/Xai'xais First Nation's historical and contemporary marine conservation actions; hereditary chief management responsibility played a key role. A conservation ethic permeates Kitasoo/Xai'xais culture, and indigenous resource management and conservation existed historically and remains strong despite extreme efforts by colonizers to suppress all indigenous practices. The Kitasoo/Xai'xais's embodiment of conservation actions as part of their worldview, rather than as requiring actions separate from everyday life (the norm in nonindigenous cultures), was missing from the conservation action classification system. The Kitasoo/Xai'xais are one of many indigenous peoples working to revitalize their governance and management authorities. With the Canadian government's declared willingness to work toward reconciliation, there is an opportunity to enable First Nations to lead on marine and other conservation efforts. Global conservation efforts would also benefit from enhanced support for indigenous conservation approaches, including expanding the conservation actions classification to encompass a new category of conservation or sacredness ethic. 相似文献

Thin-layer chromatography showed that chlorophyll b was present in acetone extracts of 6 samples of suspended matter collected in February 1973 from the Central North Pacific Ocean. Pigment patterns showed the presence of green algae and diatoms through most of the euphotic zone down to 200 m. Abstract: Molecular tools are a standard part of many conservation studies and can be informative at many different levels of analysis, although there are inherent limitations and strengths of different genes or parts of genes to inform specific questions. Animal DNA barcodes, 600- to 800-base-pair segments of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I, have been proposed as a means to quantify global biodiversity. Although mitochondrial (mt) DNA has a long history of use at the species level, recent analyses suggest that the use of a single gene, particularly mitochondrial, is unlikely to yield data that are balanced, universally acceptable, or sufficient in taxonomic scope to recognize many species lineages. Mitochondrial and nuclear genomes have different patterns of evolution and modes of inheritance, which can result in very different assessments of biodiversity. The ramifications of choosing a particular definition of species (species concept) need to be carefully considered because current efforts have designated DNA barcodes as the universal species concept without demonstrating its superiority over preexisting concepts. The results of such a barcoding paradigm may include a failure to recognize significant portions of biodiversity or nuclear/mitochondrial mixed lineages and could spuriously focus conservation resources on populations with relatively minor mtDNA divergence. DNA barcodes are most likely to provide potentially useful information for groups that are already well studied, and such taxa do not constitute the majority of biodiversity or those in most need of research attention. DNA barcode-length sequences are an important source of data but, when used alone or out of context, may offer only a fraction of the information needed to characterize species while taking resources from broader studies that could produce information essential to robust and informed conservation decisions. 相似文献

The pteropod Clione limacina (Phipps, 1774) is an arcticboreal, circumpolar species, which is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and Subarctic Oceans; it also occurs in the North Pacific Ocean (in the Oyashio and neighbouring waters) and along the Atlantic coast of North America in the waters of the cold Labrador current to the Cape Hatteras region (35° N). The distribution of C. limacina larvae in the plankton of the Norwegian, Barents and White Seas, the Bear Island-Spitsbergen region of the Greenland Sea, the Newfoundland Grand Bank and the Flemish-Cap Bank region of the North-western Atlantic Ocean, and the Kurile-Kamchatka region of the North-western Pacific Ocean has been studied, and information from literature concerning the reproduction and larval occurrence of the species is summarized. Throughout its distributional are, spawning of C. limacina is characterized by the same general ecological pattern. This species breeds and spawns in all types of water masses occurring within the vertical range which it commonly inhabits — from surface layers to 500 m water depth. In all local populations of the species, the most intensive spawning is correlated with the spring/summer period of annual heating of the local waters, and the highest abundance parallels maximum growth of phytoplankton which serves as food for veligers and early polytrochous larvae. After the end of this period, spawning intensity in all local C. limacina populations declines sharply, but spawning continues at low intensity during the autumn/winter season, being practically continuous throughout the year. Distribution patterns of C. limacina larvae are determined by those of their parental forms (the parental forms spawn in the zones permanently inhabited). The earliest larval stages of C. limacina (veligers) are present predominantly in the upper 100 or 200 m water layer, i.e. in the zone of high phytoplankton abundance. Polytrochous larvae, after becoming predaceous feeders, are distributed throughout the whole water column from the surface to 500 m depth, similar to adult C. limacina. As with the adults, larvae are present (within the species' distribution area) in all types of water masses. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, in the course of the warming of the Arctic Ocean, the southern race of C. limacina (formerly a summer/autumn seasonal invader in the Norwegian Sea) has become a permanent component of the plankton fauna of the Norwegian and Barents Seas in regions influenced by the Norwegian-Northcape Current System. 相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Mytilus trossulus from the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic) and M. edulis from Swansea Bay, South Wales, UK, collected in 1991, was studied by restriction-enzyme analysis. These two species were more similar to each other in haplotype frequencies than either was to M. galloprovincialis from Britain. M. trossulus resembles M. edulis in having a high frequency of heteroplasmy restricted to males. However, in contrast to M. edulis where restriction-site heteroplasmy predominates, in M. trossulus heteroplasmic individuals possess two genomes which differ in length by up to 3 kilobases. 相似文献
