The diets of three piscivorous bird species from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, were monitored for 14 mo from April 1986 to September 1987. Regurgitated pellets from Phalacrocorax varius (pied cormorant), P. melanoleucos (little pied cormorant) and Sterna bergii (crested tern) were collected monthly and prey items were identified from otoliths, spines and whole-fish remains. Otolith weight to fish length and weight relationships were used to aid in calculation of diet composition. Sepia sp. was the commonest prey of P. varius and P. melanoleucos; Sterna bergii took few Sepia sp. In order of decreasing importance, the teleosts Sillago maculata, Apogon fasciatus and Leiognathus moretoniensis were the next most common prey in all diets. P. melanoleucos has previously been reported to eat primarily crustaceans. The size ranges of fish prey were 18 to 452 mm for P. varius; 25 to 246 mm for P. melanoleucos; and 33 to 226 mm for Serrna bergii. The three species had similarly narrow diets. There was a significant rank correlation between the diet of P. varius and the by-catch of the prawn trawlers. This, together with observations of feeding behaviour, the similarity of the diets and the benthic and benthopelagic nature of most prey species, suggests that in Moreton Bay the three bird species are primarily dependent on food from fishery discards. The population of about 350 P. varius possibly consumes 13.7% of the total fish by-catch. The relationships between the fishery and the piscivorous birds in discussed in relation to size of bird populations and its possible dependence on the fishery.  相似文献

This study examines the feeding habits of Paromola cuvieri (Risso, 1816) and Geryon longipes A. Milne Edwards, 1881, the only two common deep-sea brachyuran crabs inhabiting the bathyal mud assemblages in the Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranean). Samples were obtained by bottom trawls at depths between 360 and 1871 m during 1983 to 1992. Both species had highly diverse diets, but very low feeding activity, as reflected by the high proportion of empty stomachs. Both characteristics may be important factors enabling deepsea crabs to adapt to bathyal zones, where trophic resources are scarce. The most important food items found in P. cuvieri were fish remains (teleost, sharks) and benthic decapods (Monodaeus couchii, Munida tenuimana). Scavenging activity plays an important role in this species. The diet of G. longipes included a broad range of benthic invertebrates. In the upper middle slope, the bivalve Abra longicallus, decapods (Calocaris macandreae and Monodaeus couchii), echinoderms and polychaetes were the dominant prey, with epibenthic peracarids as a secondary resource. On the lower middle slope, the incidence of decapod crustaceans (C. macandreae, Pontiphilus norvegicus) and peracarids in the diet declined. Small macrobenthic prey (glycerids, cumaceans or amphipods) were rare in the diet of both species, in accordance with the large size of the crab specimens studied. The absence of preferred prey items and the lack of food items of an optimum size on the lower slope may contribute to the progressive decline in abundance of P. cuvieri and G. longipes with increasing depth.  相似文献

Hermit crabs are an obvious, common and abundant feature of global shallow water environments but almost nothing is known of their ecology at their extreme latitudinal ranges, the Arctic and southern South America. In this study, we report the first investigation on hermit crabs and their use of a key resource, gastropod shells, in a subpolar and a polar environment—amongst the most rapidly changing places on earth. Hypothesised low levels of richness were confirmed by surveys—only Pagurus pubescens was found in western Spitsbergen and only three pagurids were found in northern Norway. At the northern-most of their extent, hermit crabs were fairly common but Arctic abundances (1–5 m−2) were an order of magnitude lower than in many warm temperate or tropical localities. Along the open coast of Spitsbergen, the occurrence of P. pubescens was infrequent and very patchy, but it was more abundant in the fjords. In Isfjorden, the largest studied fjord, the population of P. pubescens was mainly represented by small individuals. Spitsbergen P. pubescens used few shell types and >87% just occurred in Margarites or Buccinum shells. The proportion of the gastropod shells, used by P. pubescens, which were damaged, was high and increased with shell size. These hermit crabs are at the edge of the range for both their species and Anomura. The extremes of their location are reflected by: They probably represent the least rich assemblage, with the lowest and most patchy typical abundances reported to date and are amongst the smallest individuals using the least diverse and most damaged gastropod shells.  相似文献

During a study of midwater fish feeding in the oligotrophic North Pacific gyre in August 1978, nine specimens of a tropical-subtropical myctophid, Ceratoscopelus warmingii, were found to have been feeding on mats of diatoms, Rhizosolenia spp. Chemical analyses of the intestinal contents of several additional specimens showed significantly elevated levels of diatom degradation products. Therefore, C. warmingii, although known to feed on zooplankton, appears to be adapted for occasional herbivory. Such an adaptation is exceptional within a major ecological group of oceanic fishes that was previously thought to be exclusively carnivorous. Like omnivorous and herbivorous fishes in general, C. warmingii has a longer intestine than other myctophid species. As an adaptive response to competition from a diverse fish fauna in a low-productivity environment, occasional herbivory by C. warmingii runs counter to the theoretical expectation by expanding rather than narrowing the range of potential food types.  相似文献

Sternoptyx diaphana Hermann is a non-migrating hatchetfish inhabiting the mesopelagic zone between 300 and 1500 m in temperate to tropical oceanic regions. An analysis is presented of the diet of this species, collected from 5 oceanic faunal provinces—the Pacific Subantarctic, and 4 subregions of the North Atlantic Ocean. Stomach analyses of 20 to 40 mm specimens revealed considerable intra-trawl (fish to fish), intraregional (Station to station), and inter-regional variation in size and composition of the diet. Generic composition of stomach contents differed noticeably from region to region, with the highest degree of faunal affinity being only 38%. The dominant food items both in terms of biomass and abundance also varied inter-regionally, with fish, euphausiids, or decapods predominant by weight; and euphaussids, copepods, or amphipods most prevalent by number. Differences in size distribution of food items from region to region were also noted. S. diaphana from regions of cooler overlying water masses fed on fewer but larger prey items, and diet was less diverse than that of fish from warmer waters. The diet consists primarily of omnivorous and carnivorous prey, and there is evidence that larger specimens feed on larger food items. The broad size-distribution and taxonomic spectrum of the prey, features of functional morphology, and low density as inferred from trawl catches, indicate that S. diaphana is a predator of limited pursuit capability. Feeding strategy appears to involve capture of the nearest available prey within its immediate vicinity.  相似文献

Studies of reef fish herbivory have mainly focused on the impacts and behaviour of adults of tropical species. In this study, the ontogenetic shifts in home range, aggression, feeding rate, diet and gut morphology in juveniles and adults of two temperate territorial damselfishes, Parma microlepis and Parma unifasciata, were determined. Both P. microlepis and P. unifasciata juveniles under 80 mm TL exhibited no aggressive chases towards conspecifics or other species, while above 80 mm TL aggressive chase frequency increased in conjunction with an increase in home range, defended as a territory. Ontogenetic diet shifts, characterised by an increase in herbivory (P. unifasciata: juveniles: 64% plant material, adults: 95% plant material; P. microlepis: juveniles: 43% plant material, adults: 67% plant material) were observed for both species. The ratio of digestive tract length to body length, which often accompanies a switch to herbivory, increased significantly with ontogeny for both species. Compared to tropical confamilial grazers, these temperate damselfish species feeding rates were lower, and they had larger territories which were not as strongly defended (fewer aggressive chases).  相似文献

Relative gut length, Zihler’s index, and relative gut mass were measured in four species of prickleback fishes and the effects of ontogeny, diet, and phylogeny on these gut dimensions were determined. Of the four species, Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus shift to herbivory with growth (>45 mm SL), whereas X. atropurpureus and Anoplarchus purpurescens remain carnivores. A. purpurescens belongs to a carnivorous clade, and the three other species belong to an adjacent, herbivorous clade. Gut dimensions were compared in three feeding categories of the four species: (1) small, wild-caught juveniles representing the carnivorous condition before two species shift to herbivory; (2) larger, wild-caught juveniles representing the natural diet condition of the two carnivores and the two species that have shifted to herbivory; and (3) larger, laboratory-raised juveniles produced by feeding a high-protein artificial diet to small juveniles until they have reached the size of the larger, wild-caught juveniles. Comparisons of gut dimensions in categories (1) versus (2) tested for an ontogenetic effect, in (2) versus (3) for a dietary effect, and within each category for a phylogenetic effect. C. violaceus and X. mucosus increased gut dimensions with increase in body size and did not change ontogenetic trajectory in gut dimensions on the high-protein artificial diet, suggesting that they are genetically programmed to develop relatively large guts associated with herbivory. X. atropurpureus increased its gut dimensions with increase in size similar to its sister taxon, X. mucosus, suggesting a phylogenetic influence, but decreased gut dimensions on the high-protein artificial diet, suggesting phenotypic plasticity. Nevertheless, X. atropurpureus displayed a larger gut than A. purpurescens, further evidence that it evolved in an herbivorous clade. A. purpurescens possessed a relatively small gut that was little affected by ontogeny or diet. Ontogeny and phylogeny more than diet appear to influence gut dimensions in the four species, thus favoring genetic adaptation over phenotypic plasticity as the major force acting on digestive system features in the two prickleback clades.  相似文献

The amount of artificial habitat (termed ??artificial reef??, AR) in marine systems is rapidly increasing, yet the effect of most types of AR on reef communities remains unknown. We examined the role of well-established vessel-reefs in structuring coral reef fish assemblages by comparing assemblages on 7 World War II wrecks (>65?years old) to those on interspersed coral patch reefs of comparable size in a tropical lagoon. Fish abundance, species richness, diversity and feeding guild structure on wrecks were similar to natural reefs; however, species composition differed between the two reef types (R?=?0.189?C0.341, average dissimilarity: 67.3?C68.8?%). Despite being more species-rich and diverse, fish assemblages on larger wrecks were less similar to assemblages on their adjacent natural reefs than smaller wrecks. Wrecks may also have affected fish abundance on adjacent natural reefs, with reefs adjacent to larger wrecks supporting higher abundances than reefs adjacent to smaller wrecks. Our results indicate that increases in vessel-reef habitat may not greatly affect reef fish assemblage parameters, but may affect the relative abundances of particular species.  相似文献

Diets of 15 species of demersal and pelagic fishes on the upper continental slope (420 to 550 m) were determined, based on samples taken every two months over 13 mo (April 1984 to April 1985) off eastern Tasmania. The calorific contribution of each prey item to the diets was determined. The fish could be divided into four trophic categories: pelagic piscivores, epibenthic piscivores, epibenthic invertebrate feeders and benthopelagic omnivores. Dietary overlap between the groups was low. The pelagic piscivores Apogonops anomalus, Trachurus declivis, Brama brama, Lepidopus caudatus and Macruronus novaezelandiae primarily consume the shelf-break myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris; their diet is narrow, with a large overlap between species. The epibenthic piscivores Deania calcea and Genypterus blacodes both take a greater variety of prey, but have little dietary overlap. The fish feeding on epibenthic invertebrates, Coelorinchus sp. 2 and Centriscops humerosus, obtain most of their energy from benthic Crustacea and Ophiuroidea, supplemented with Lampanyctodes hectoris; the diet is broad, with little overlap. Among the benthopelagic omnivores (Cyttus traversi, Coelorinchus sp. 4, Lepidorhynchus denticulatus, Neocyttus rhomboidalis, Helicolenus percoides, Epigonus denticulatus and E. lenimen), most diets are broad and show slight overlap. All but E. denticulatus consume significant quantities of Lampanyctodes hectoris as well as Crustacea, particularly Polychaeta, Euphausiacea and Pyrosoma atlanticum. Seasonal changes in diet occurred in G. blacodes, T. declivis, Lepidopus caudatus, Coelorinchus sp. 4, Lepidorhynchus denticulatus, H. percoides, E. denticulatus and E. lenimen; these were related to changes in abundance of particular prey species, not to alterations in feeding habits. Only three species, Lepidopus caudatus, Coelorinchus sp. 2 and H. percoides, showed significant diel feeding periodicity. Ontogenetic dietary changes were evident in Cyttus traversi, Coelorinchus sp. 2, Lepidorhynchus denticulatus and H. percoides. Cyttus traversi and H. percoides progressively changed from crustaceans to fish as their size increased. The diets of size classes within species showed little overlap, except for Lepidorhynchus denticulatus, which eats chiefly euphausiids and Lampanyctodes hectoris at all sizes. In addition to describing the diets and trophic relationships of 90% of the fish biomass, the results emphasize the importance to the entire fish community of mesopelagic food resources, particularly Lampanyctodes hectoris. Many benthopelagic species undertake extensive vertical migrations in search of prey, thus playing a major role in the transport of energy from midwater regions to the benthos of the continental slope.  相似文献

Habitat associations are an integral part of coral reef community structure. Commonly, one organism lives in such close association within or near another that a spatial refuge occurs, whereby one of the organisms provides protection to the other. This is often the result of defenses of the host deterring an associate organism’s consumers. In Moorea, French Polynesia, the range and abundance of the brown macroalga, Turbinaria ornata, have increased drastically since 1980 such that dense aggregations of this macroalga are a dominant component of the backreef habitat. Turbinaria ornata is both mechanically and chemically defended from herbivores. Other species of macroalgae grow within aggregations of Turbinaria and may benefit from these defenses. This study investigates whether aggregations of Turbinaria create a refuge from herbivory for associate macroalgae. When Turbinaria aggregations were removed experimentally, there was a significant increase in the number of associate algal species. Moreover, an herbivory assay using the palatable local alga Acanthophora spicifera identified herbivory as the mechanism for lower diversity on bommies lacking Turbinaria aggregations. The local increase in algal richness due to the refuge from herbivory afforded by Turbinaria may be an important contribution to macroalgal and community dynamics on reefs in Moorea, French Polynesia.  相似文献

Trapezia ferruginea appears to depend entirely on its coral host (Pocillopora spp.) for shelter and food. Field and laboratory experiments have shown that the brightly colored crabs move between colonies at night. Analysis of movements in crabs randomly distributed among randomized Pocillopora damicornis colonies under laboratory conditions showed that after 6 days there was a significant increase in the number of heterosexual pairs (P<0.001) and a significant correlation between the number of crabs and the size of colonies (P=0.003), as well as between the size of crabs and the size of colonies (P=0.020) — conditions which are also observed in the field. No such correlations were obtained (P>0.05) in a similar experiment where very intense predation by carnivorous fishes was present. This host selection by adults appears to be elicited by the lack of a suitable partner and the inadequate size of their established territory in the colony.  相似文献

Grazing pressure on macroalgae in littoral communities may vary with algal species, the age of an algal individual and grazer identity. Previous studies on alga–grazer interactions have shown that grazer preference for an algal species may release another one from interspecific competition. We measured the impacts of four common grazer taxa and the natural grazer guild on macroalgal communities at both their colonization and adult stages, and compared the impacts to grazer exclosures. The grazer effects were stronger on colonizing than on adult macroalgae; grazers did not reduce the total density of adult algae. Grazers both feed on propagules and indirectly facilitate other algae, depending on the grazer or algal species. Hydrobia species increased the settlement of spores of the red alga Ceramium tenuicorne. Similarly, the gastropod Theodoxus fluviatilis tended to facilitate one crustose algal species, but decreased the propagule density of annual filamentous algae, suggesting a preference for one species to the advantage of another. Effects of crustacean mesograzers on the studied macroalgae were weak. These results indicate that northern Baltic macroalgae are limited to grazing mainly during their colonization stage.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of body size, feeding strategy and depth distribution on the trophic resource partitioning among the 26 dominant fish consumers in a fish assemblage on the central Mediterranean shelf-break. The fish assemblage was structured in two major trophic guilds: epibenthic and zooplanktonic feeders, according to the position of each predator along the benthos–plankton gradient. Within each main guild, the species were segregated along a prey-size or fish-size gradient into five further guilds. Fish size and prey size were strongly correlated, indicating that the prey-size niche can be well explained by predator size. Fish consumers showed a significant negative correlation between the similarity in prey type and the similarity in depth distribution; most species with similar trophic preferences segregated along the depth dimension. The only predators overlapping in both food and depth preferences were those with a more specialist trophic behavior. These results suggest that fish body size and depth preferences are the two main niche dimensions, explaining a large part of the coexistence between the Mediterranean shelf-break fish consumers.  相似文献

Fatty acid biomarkers and stable isotope signatures were used to identify the sources of particulate and sedimentary organic matter and its input into the food web through the dominant consumer within the mangrove-dominated Rufiji estuary, Tanzania. Specific fatty acids were used to identify the preferred basal sources of dominant fauna (i.e. filter feeder bivalves, snails, crabs, shrimps, and three fish species), and their presence in the water and sediment samples in the estuary. Both fatty acid and stable isotope results revealed that food web in the Rufiji estuary depended on a variety of carbon sources (mangroves, allochthonous terrestrial inputs, macroalgae, and phytoplankton), contributing to a different degree into the diets of primary consumers and members of near-shore fish, but none of them were obligatory for the survival of these species. The δ15N values of major primary producers and consumers/predators revealed a trend for δ15N enrichment with increasing trophic level. The ratio of docosahexaenoic acid to eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA:EPA) decreased from pelagic to benthic feeding fish. This indicated that fish with different feeding modes derived their fatty acids from different primary sources of nutrition, and suggested that the DHA:EPA ratio may be a useful indicator of feeding mode.  相似文献

Two herbivorous species of the temperate labroid fish family Odacidae were examined for the presence of gut endosymbionts.Odax cyanomelas (Richardson) from southern Australia andO. pullus Schneider from New Zealand both feed on macroalgae, yet appear to lack obvious morphological specializations for herbivory. Specimens ofO. cyanomelas andO. pullus were collected in 1989 from Sydney, Australia, and Leigh, New Zealand, respectively. Both species were found to harbour dense concentrations of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes in their lower intestines. The various cell types present were examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Epifluorescence microscope counts were used to quantify the distribution and abundance of the microbiota along the gut ofO. cyanomelas. Major differences were observed in the composition of microbiota between the two species.O. cyanomelas contained spirilla, large rod-shaped bacteria, filamentous bacteria and two forms of trichomonad flagellates.O. pullus also harboured dense, large, rod-shaped bacterial populations, but lacked the other two large prokaryote categories found inO. cyanomelas, and contained diplomonad flagellates. The large rod-shaped bacteria found in both species resembled prokaryotes described from other herbivorous fish and termites.  相似文献

This study evaluated selection for shell size by three species of tropical intertidal hermit crabs, Clibanarius antillensis, C. sclopetarius, and C. vittatus, from species of shells which are frequently used in nature. Crab size and weight were strongly and significantly related to all measured parameters of the selected shells. The strength of these relationships (r2 values) depended neither on the crab nor on the shell variables taken into account. The relationships between crab size and the dimensions of the selected shells showed higher r2 values than the corresponding relationships with the shells that the crabs had occupied when they were collected (0.482–0.903 in comparison to 0.091–0.652, respectively), indicating that the crabs were occupying sub-optimal shells in nature. Negative allometry was frequently found in the relationships between crab and shell variables, indicating that large crabs select and use proportionally lighter shells than do small crabs. This negative allometry was stronger for the shells used in nature (except for C. antillensis), i.e. larger crabs tended to select heavier shells in the laboratory than in nature. Different allometric relationships were also recorded among the dimensions of shells used in nature and those selected by the hermit crabs in free-access experiments: as shell length increased, the selected shells were heavier and had larger apertures than the shells used in nature. The relationships between crab size and the length and weight of the selected shells did not depend on the species of crab or species of shell, but only on crab size. Therefore, analyses using these variables can be performed without taking the species of crab or shell into account, i.e. data from different crab or shell species can be pooled. The influence of crab and/or shell species was recorded only in the models fitted for aperture length and width, variables which were more related to shell architecture than did shell length or weight. In contrast, if crab weight is used as an independent variable, different crab or shell species can be analyzed together independently of the particular shell parameter. This indicates that crab weight may be less susceptible than crab shield length to shell morphological constraints. Finally, the results indicate that the preferred size of a given shell type chosen by a given hermit crab will depend more on crab size or weight, than on the crab or shell species under consideration, i.e. crab shell-size relationships are not species specific.Communicated by P.W. Partitioning of the food resources by two coexisting pufferfishes (Sphoeroides spengleri and S. testudineus) from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA, was investigated. Gut contents from 453 bandtail and 339 checkered puffers were analyzed. The diets of both species consisted of a variety of benthic prey, but only crustaceans and molluscs were important prey groups. While differences were found in the proportions of general prey categories eaten by these fishes, both species consumed substantial quantities of brachyuran crabs, bivalves, and gastropods. Specific identification of the prey items within these three food categories revealed additional differences in prey between the two puffer species. This partitioning of the food resources by bandtail and checkered puffers was found between both species overall, between overlapping size ranges, and between both species' most abundant size group. Differences in food habits between these two fishes illustrate that congeners with virtually identical mouth structure and complete spatial overlap can significantly partition the food resources.Contribution No. 78-58M from the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Center, Miami Laboratory, Miami, Florida, USA.  相似文献

Eleven populations of the Pan-American sandy beach isopod Excirolana braziliensis, distributed from tropical (9°N) to temperate (39°S) sandy beaches in Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, were analyzed to determine latitudinal variations in: breeding and recruitment patterns, sex ratios, size of ovigerous females and of juveniles and length–fecundity relationships. E. braziliensis exhibited strong latitudinal patterns in all reproductive traits throughout its distribution range. Breeding and recruitment shifted from continuous to seasonal from tropical to temperate beaches, having a predominance of females at higher latitudes. In agreement with the latitudinal gradient hypothesis, ovigerous females inhabiting tropical sandy beaches (low latitudes) were smaller, became sexually mature at smaller sizes and had lower individual fecundity than on temperate beaches. Juveniles were also smallest at low latitudes. Between-ocean comparisons showed very similar reproductive characteristics for roughly the same latitude. These linked reproductive parameters suggest that the intensity of breeding effort is associated with the duration of the breeding season and geographically size-related characteristics of the species. Geographic variations in the breeding and recruitment seasons, as well as in individual fecundity, size structure of mature females and sex ratios, are proposed to have major consequences in explaining local variations in population demography. Our paper also reinforces the notion that sandy beach animals are highly plastic.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Direct observations of predation on 436 individuals of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) were carried out in infralittoral rocky bottoms (between 5 and 20 m deep) in three Mediterranean marine reserves. The predator guild was composed of six fish species, the sparids Diplodus sargus and D. vulgaris being the main predators, and the labrid Coris julis a major predator of juvenile sea urchins. Four species attempted but failed to open sea urchins. The scavenger guild was most rich in species, with 17 species observed. Predation was size-dependent; the size of predators increased with increasing size of the sea urchins. The presence of two feeding guilds is suggested, one composed of sparids (Diplodus spp.), able to kill juvenile and adult sea urchins, and the other composed of labrids (mainly C. julis), which feed on juvenile sea urchins. To avoid the extension of overgrazed, barren areas created by P. lividus populations, fisheries' regulations should focus on major sea-urchin predators, chiefly D. sargus, D. vulgaris and C. julis. The portunid crabScylla serrata (Forskål) is shown to migrate offshore to spawn. Records of 447S. serrata caught as bycatch by trawlers in the tropical waters of northern Australia were analysed with respect to area, depth, distance offshore and month of capture as well as the sex and size of the crabs and whether the females were ovigerous. The crabs were caught mainly in three areas that correspond to the tiger prawn trawl fishery, at between 10 and 60 m depth (mean 28.5 m), 3 to 95 km offshore (mean 17.9 km). Most (87%) of the crabs were captured in October and November, which suggests they move offshore in September and October. No crabs were reported from offshore by February. Over 97% of the crabs caught offshore were female, of these 61.5% were ovigerous. The size range of females (100–109 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) and males (120–129 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) caught was similar. The frequent occurrence in coastal waters of females that are larger than the modal size at spawning, as well as mature females with spent ovaries, suggests that many females return to the coast after spawning. Although some species of portunid crab are euryhaline, mature females of estuarine species migrate to the sea to spawn. The migration byS. serrata described here is far more extensive than would be required to reach sea water salinities; it probably provides a dispersal mechanism for larvae to enable the megalopa stage to recruit to habitats distant from those of the parents.  相似文献
