The animal-habitat relationships and seasonal dynamics of the benthic macroinfauna were investigated from November 1986 to October 1988 in the Great Sippe-wissett salt marsh (Massachusetts, USA). Total macrofaunal abundance varied seasonally, displaying a peak in late spring and early summer, then declining sharply during late summer and recovering briefly in fall before collapsing in winter. Three macroinfaunal assemblages were found in the marsh, distributed along gradients of environmental factors. These included a sandy non-organic sediment assemblage, a sandy organic sediment assemblage and a muddy sediment assemblage. The species groups characteristic of unstable sandy non-organic sediments included the polychaetes Leitoscoloplos fragilis, Aricidea jefreyssi, Magelona rosea and Streptosyllis verrilli, the oligochaete Paranais litoralis, and the crustacean Acanthohaustorius millsi. Sandy organic sediments were characterized by the polychaetes Marenzelleria viridis, Capitella capitata, Neanthes succinea, N. arenaceodonta, Polydora ligni and Heteromastus filiformis, the oligochaete Lumbricillus sp., and the mollusc Gemma gemma. In muddy sites, the polychaete Streblospio benedicti and the oligochaetes Paranais litoralis and Monopylephorus evertus were the dominant species. Secondary production of benthic macroinfauna in each of these habitats was estimated. The highest values of biomass and production were recorded in the sandy organic sediments. Secondary production was estimated to be 1850 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy organic areas, but only 281 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy non-organic areas and 113 kJ m-2 yr-1 in muddy areas. This results in an area-weighted average production of 505 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the unvegetated areas of the marsh. The Great Sippewissett salt marsh has an area of 483800 m2, the total secondary production of the macroinfauna for the whole unvegetated area of the marsh was estimated as 4651 kg dry wt yr-1, expressed as somatic growth. This production value seems consistent with production data obtained for other intertidal North Atlantic environments.  相似文献

Influence of predation on infaunal abundance in Upper Chesapeake Bay,USA   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The importance of predators in controlling the densities of infaunal (>0.5 mm) organisms was investigated in the mesohaline region of the Upper Chesapeake Bay (USA) using field experiments. The role of predators in controlling infaunal density and community characteristics varied with habitat type, season (i.e., predator abundance) and developmental or successional stage of the community. Few infaunal species were adversely affected by predator exclusion. Species that increased greatly in abundance in the absence of predators (e.g. Eteone heteropoda, Streblospio benedicti, Nereis succinea, and juvenile Macoma balthica and Mya arenaria) lived near the sediment-water interface and had major population pulses from fall through spring. Species whose abundances increased moderately or were not affected by predator exclusion were deeper burrowing organisms (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis and adult Mya arenaria), or were relatively small organisms (e.g. Paraprionospio pinnata, Scolecolepides viridis and Peloscolex gabriellae) whose principal predators could be other members of the infauna. Competition did not appear to be an important factor controlling infaunal density in these experiments. This work is Contribution No. 973 of the Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

The hypothesis that drifting red algal mats inhibit settlement of planktonic larvae was tested in a field experiment in 1986. Substratum free of algae (caged boxes) was compared with substratum covered with algae (natural substratum and open boxes). Whereas settling densities of 1500 to 5500 ind. m-2 of the bivalves Macoma balthica, Cardium glaucum and Mya arenaria were observed in sediment without algal cover, no recruits of the same species were found beneath the algae during the period of peak settlement (June to July). The same difference was observed for the polychaete Nereis diversicolor, although in this case occasional individuals were found beneath the algae. The results demonstrate that algae mats may be efficient inhibitors of larval settlement to benthic soft-substratum communities. It is concluded that algae act as a larval filter.  相似文献

Benthic filter feeding macrofauna organisms may be an important factor linking sediment and water column. Transport of water and concomitantly of suspended matter is directly related to the size of the benthic filter feeding population. This paper aims to determine the potential for water transport by the bivalve Mya arenaria along a coastal stretch of roughly 100 km length in the southern Baltic Sea. Quantification of population filtration rates specific to the area is based on distribution, abundance and biomass of M. arenaria and calculated according to previously published filtration rate–biomass relations. Calculated rates range up to >8 m3 m–2 day–1 (at 5–20 m water depth in sandy sediment) with the potential to locally process a volume of water equivalent to the water column within <1 day. Data from 1991–2002 at one site suggest that the area-specific potential population filtration rate remains remarkably constant in time despite changes in population structure of M. arenaria. The related impact on pore water exchange within the permeable sediment associated with the leakage of water from the gape of M. arenaria valves is discussed.Communicated by L. Mussel bed community structure of two intertidal mytilids, Septifer virgatus (Wiegmann) and Hormomya mutabilis (Gould), whose beds were contiguous vertically on a rocky intertidal shore (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan), was compared between 1982 and 1983. In the upper S. virgatus bed, crustaceans and bivalves were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. There were three barnacle species representative of the epizoans, two isopods and one amphipod as mobile fauna, and two bivalves as infauna. The lower H. mutabilis bed supported virtually no epizoans or mobile fauna. Infaunal free-ranging polychaetes and sipunculids were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. The H. mutabilis bed contained a much greater amount of sediment than did the S. virgatus bed, and the interstices among individual H. mutabilis and among their byssal threads were filled with sediment. The biomass of six of nine species dominant in the S. virgatus bed was negatively correlated with the amount of sediment. Recruitment of these faunal assemblages into artificial mussel clumps was examined in mussel enclosure experiments, and a negative sediment effect in H. mutabilis clumps was detected for one isopod and one limpet species. Factors causing the differences between two mussel bed communities are discussed, focusing on the effects of sediment.  相似文献

While the benthic infauna of the North Sea has been studied intensively over the past decades, few studies have focused on the larger mobile epifauna. Studies carried out to date have described the distribution of epifaunal communities over the whole of the North Sea, but variability within the identified communities, which occurs on a much smaller scale, has so far remained unstudied. This is the first study to describe seasonal and annual variability of an epifaunal assemblage in the German Bight area, where environmental conditions are highly variable. The benthic community was sampled with a 2 m beam trawl from 1998 to 2001. The echinoderms Ophiura albida and Asterias rubens and the crustacean Pagurus bernhardus were the dominant species caught throughout the study period. Overall the species composition of the catches was relatively consistent, while abundances of dominant species fluctuated considerably between sampling periods. Differences between sampling periods were not only influenced by the abundances of dominant species, but also by less dominant species such as Ophiura ophiura, Astropecten irregularis, Corystes cassivelaunus, Crangon crangon and Aphorrahis pespelicani. The abundances of these species varied annually and seasonally in the assemblage. Clear differences between summer and winter in the species composition, abundance and biomass were identified. Annual and seasonal changes were most likely linked to migratory movements of epifauna into and out of the area under investigation. Temporal changes in species composition and abundance correlated best with water temperatures, while the spatial distribution of the total biomass over the whole sampling period was correlated with sediment characteristics. Anthropogenic influences such as fishing activity and chronic large-scale eutrophication are thought to have influenced the community on a long-term basis, but have been considered unlikely causes for the short-term variability described by this study.Communicated by J.P. The structure, diversity and temporal distribution of the infaunal polychaetes associated with Cymodocea nodosa meadows were studied in Tenerife (Canary Islands). The samples were collected monthly throughout a year, to depths of 13–16 m. The sediment was extracted by means of PVC cores, in which four layers were separated (i.e. 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–20 cm and 20–30 cm). A total of 1,167 polychaete specimens, belonging to 69 taxa were collected, representing one of the most dominant groups in the benthic assemblage throughout the entire year. The most common families were Syllidae, Paraonidae and Spionidae, both in terms of abundance and species richness. The dominant species were Streptosyllis bidentata, Aricidea assimilis and Exogone parahomoseta mediterranea, representing also the only constant species throughout the year. The highest values of species richness, diversity, equitability and abundance of polychaetes occurred in September. The multifactorial analysis of abundances (i.e. cluster analysis and non-metric, multi-dimensional scaling) indicated temporal segregation of the samples from July, August and September (i.e. the warmest months) with respect to those from the rest of the year, due to structural differences in the assemblage. Polychaete species have been found to a depth of up to 30 cm in the sediment. Nevertheless, most of them (89%) occurred in the upper 5 cm of the sediment, with an increase of specimens in deeper layers in February (i.e. due to sporadic episodes of higher hydrodynamics). To compare the vertical distribution of polychaetes, additional core samples were collected in two seagrass meadows (i.e. C. nodosa and Ruppia cirrhosa) at Ebros Delta (NW Mediterranean); these were separated into five layers (i.e. 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–15 cm, 15–20 cm, 20–25 cm). The results obtained for the R. cirrhosa meadow (98% of the polychaetes within the upper 5 cm) agree with those for the Canarian C. nodosa meadow, while the polychaetes reached up to 15 cm depth in the Mediterranean C. nodosa meadow (i.e. ~39% between 0 and 5 cm, ~41% between 5 and 10 cm, ~20% between 10 and 15 cm). Our results indicated that the structural characteristics of the assemblages appeared to be more strongly controlled by the combined characteristics of the sediment (i.e. lack of oxygen, granulometry and degree of compaction) than by the seagrass species building the meadow.Communicated by O. Three functionally different macrofaunal species (the filter- and/or surface deposit-feeding polychaete Hediste diversicolor, and the suspension-feeding bivalves Mya arenaria and Cerastoderma glaucum) were introduced as single- and two-species treatments into microcosms containing sandy sediment with a natural meiofaunal community. H. diversicolor is a burrowing species building a system of galleries, C. glaucum lives actively near the sediment surface acting as a biodiffuser and M. arenaria buries deeply and leads a sessile lifestyle. It is shown that H. diversicolor extended the vertical distribution of meiofauna into deeper sediment layers compared to the control and non-Hediste treatments. The response of the nematode community varied significantly among treatments and was dependant on the macrobenthic species composition but not on the species number. Nematode assemblages in all treatments with the polychaete, both in monoculture and with either bivalve, differed significantly from those recorded in other treatments and were more similar than replicates within any other single treatment. H. diversicolor also appeared to have stimulated nematode species diversity. The present study demonstrated that the impact of macrobenthic assemblages on meiofauna is not a simple summation of individual species effects but is species specific.  相似文献

The upper temperature tolerance range for Trichomya hirsuta L. is described for acclimation temperatures of 10° to 32°C at 30% S. Changes in thermal resistance with time are described along with the incipient lethal temperatures. The eurythermicity for the species is 240.7 C°-squared. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature is 35.1°C. Definition of the incipient sublethal temperature is given, and is equal to 32°C. Diet effects are shown not to be significant in short-term lethal experiments, but indicate that unfed mussels reduce their resistance after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Size was also shown to have no effect on resistance and tolerance. A comparison of the tolerance triangle of T. hirsuta with those of the temperate species Mytilus edulis and Mya arenaria revealed that the 24-h LT50 minus 2.2 C° approximates the incipient lethal temperature. The eurythermicities of the temperate species are Mytilus edulis, 363 C°-squared; and Mya arenaria, 415 C°-squared.  相似文献

After a formerly grazed salt marsh was released from cattle grazing, changes in plant species composition were monitored for 20 yr, using vegetation maps and permanent plots. Three areas, differing in age and nutrient status were compared. The number of plant species and plant communities decreased.Elymus athericus (Elytrigia pungens) became dominant in most plant communities after 5–20 yr on the oldest and most productive salt marsh. In younger areas it took more time forE. athericus to become dominant. At least 7 cm of clay seemed to be a prerequisite for this plant species to increase in dominance. The results from monitoring over decades are discussed in view of the knowledge on succession over centuries as derived from a chronosequence.  相似文献

The diet of the portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator (L.) in soft-bottom areas of the Ría de Arousa (Galicia, north-west Spain) was studied by analysis of stomach contents, and by comparison of habitats of contrasting abundance, composition and diversity of prey communities. Monthly samples were taken from July 1989 to June 1990 (N=3747) in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) raft-culture areas and central channel zones. Ninety-two food items were identified: crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes, ophiuroids and fishes were the dominant prey. The raft epifauna and the mussels constituted the dominant group of prey in the raft areas and inner channel station (the epifaunal crab Pisidia longicornis comprised 30 to 52% of the diet), whereas the benthic macroinfauna was the dominant food component in the mid-outer channel (polychaetes constituted 32% of the diet). In the epifaunal community, diet selection for P. longicornis was positive and for amphipods was negative, whereas within the infauna diet selection for bivalves and ophiuroids was positive and for polychaetes negative or neutral. The seasonal importance of P. longicornis and M. galloprovincialis varied in the diet of L. depurator parallel to seasonal activities connected with mussel culture (seeding, thinning, harvesting) that determine the availability of prey from the rafts. Major changes in the composition of the diet related to the life history of L. depurator occurred during ontogeny. In the raft zones, consumption of mussels and fishes increased with increasing body size, while the consumption of Natantia, non-decapod crustaceans, gastropods, polychaetes Pectinariidae and plants decreased with increasing crab size. Maximum consumption of P. longicornis was by L. depurator individuals of intermediate size (15 to 44 mm carapace width). Stomach fullness (measured as dry weight of food) increased with increasing body size, but with negative allometry. During the late pre-moult and early post-moult periods L. depurator did not consume any food; maximum stomach fullness was recorded for the late post-moult and intermoult stages. Female food consumption decreased during egg incubation. Food consumption was greater in autumn and winter than at other seasons; this appears to be related to seasonal changes in reproduction and moulting.  相似文献

Standing crop, population size, and species diversity of the macrobenthic organisms in an estuarine channel were studied before and after dredging. A new suction-corer which sampled an area 0.1 m2 to a depth of 30 cm was used in order to insure the inclusion of large, deep-dwelling animals. Eleven months after dredging, biomass and number of species and specimens had not recovered to pre-dredging levels. Colonization began with relatively large, swiftly moving forms such as the errant polychaete Nereis succinea and the crab Neopanope texana sayi. Stations in silt and mud regions recovered more slowly than those in sandier sediments. Most of the dominant and subdominant species had not recovered 11 months after dredging, and the previously abundant polychaetes Notomastus latericeus and Clymenella torquata had virtually disappeared. Only relatively uncommon lamellibranchs such as Tellina agilis, Lyonsia hyalina and Mulinia lateralis increased after dredging. Distribution of sediment types changed as the result of modified tidal velocities in the channel. Mud and silt were removed by the dredge, exposing the sand underneath, and sandy stations became muddier as the result of lowered current velocities. Marked changes in species composition reflected this change in sediment character. Eleven months after dredging no evidence of succession was found, but colonization had begun. Values of all three parameters studied were reduced to small fractions of pre-dredging levels, although species diversity in sandy sediments exceeded pre-dredging levels.  相似文献

A life table was constructed for Mya arenaria from Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, based on schedules of age-specific fecundity and mortality determined under natural conditions. Mortality rates decrease with size and age in this species, with the period of maximum mortality occurring during the summer months. Mortality rates during the fall and winter were considerably lower, perhaps due to the inactivity of natural predators. The survivorship curve for M. arenaria approximates the Type 3 curve of Deevey (1947). Mean life expectancy is low in recently-settled clams, peaks when the individual reaches 30.0 to 34.9 mm (1 year of age) and remains fairly high for most of the remainder of life. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r max) is very high: 4.74. This enormous rate of potential increase is offset by high rates of larval mortality in the plankton. Unlike the reproductive values of most animals studied, those in M. arenaria peak late in life, well after the know age of first reproduction. This is probably the result of increased fecundity with age. The implications of this work in the area of resource management are discussed.  相似文献

Nereid polychaetes (Nereis vexillosa and Platynereis bicanaliculata) attach pieces of drift algae to their tube surfaces. The presence of permanent algal cover increases the predictability of the food supply for at least the herbivores (including the nereids) and the deposit feeders, and modulates the temperature and salinity stresses of the marine intertidal soft-bottom environment. However, it may affect the access of organisms to the oxygenated water layers above the sediment surface. This is true for polychaetes that live head downwards in vertical tubes. It is suggested that the attachment behavior of the nereid polychaetes increases the ability of the plant to colonize habitats both temporally and spatially.  相似文献

Sterol composition of three Baltic Sea mussels (Mytilus edulis, Cardium glaucum, Mya arenaria) was compared with the sterol composition of three biologically closely related mussels from the Black Sea (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Cardium edule, Mya arenaria). The qualitative sterol composition of the mussels studied was similar, but some quantitative differences were found.  相似文献

Specimens of Chlamys opercularis, Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Scrobicularia plana and Mya arenaria were exposed to both gradual (sinusoidal) and abrupt (square-wave) salinity fluctuations and measurements made of osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the hemolymph and where applicable in the mantle fluid. In both sinusoidal and square-wave regimes fluctuating between 100 and 50% seawater (100%=ca. 32 S), the hemolymph Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and osmotic concentrations followed the concentrations of the external medium in Chlamys opercularis. The hemolymph and mantle fluid osmotic Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations of Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium as long as the molluscs' shell valves remained open. There were no changes in the ionic or osmotic concentrations of the hemolymph or mantle fluid of any of these species during periods of shell-valve closure. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations of wedged-open Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, C. gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium. Hemolymph Ca2+ concentrations showed a damped response in C. gigas and Mytilus edulis. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations of Mya arenaria fluctuated in a similar manner to the external medium, but were damped. Wedged-open Mytilus edulis exposed to fluctuating salinity and supplied with a constant supply of 10 mM Ca2+ showed greater changes in hemolymph ionic and osmotic concentrations than M. edulis exposed to the same salinity fluctuation without a constant Ca2+ supply. Chlamys opercularis and Modiolus modiolus survived in a 50% seawater minimum sinusoidal salinity fluctuation for 10 days; wedged-open M. modiolus survived only 3 days. Burrowing had no effect on the osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ or Ca2+ concentrations of the hemolymph of Mya arenaria or S. plana exposed to fluctuating salinities. All of the species studied were shown to be osmoconformers.  相似文献

A grazing experiment was started in 1984 and 1989 respectively, in two parts of a dune grassland in the nature reserve ‘Zwanenwater’, North Holland; a third part with similar geology and topography was used as a control area and not grazed. An evaluation of the effects of grazing on vegetation patterns, species composition, vegetation structure and humus form was made with the help of vegetation maps from 1986 and 1992 as well as field surveys. Dense tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria increased over the period 1986–1992 in the grazed areas, and especially in the non-grazed area (increase in area to 20 %, 22 % and 50 %, respectively). Open communities decreased in the grazed areas, but are still prevalent, while in the ungrazed area they virtually disappeared, with the result that the present percentage areas are 53 %, 38 % and 17 %. Field survey data were classified by TWINSPAN producing four vegetation types. These occur more or less equally in grazed and ungrazed areas, albeit with different percentage areas: (1) open vegetation dominated byCorynephorus canescens; (2) open vegetation characterized byKoeleria macrantha; (3) heathland dominated byEmpetrum nigrum; and (4) tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria. Within a vegetation type, species composition was only marginally affected by grazing regime. Within the open communities the number of species, vegetation height, vegetation cover and soil organic horizons were not affected by grazing. In the tall-grass communities the number of species was significantly larger and the height of the vegetation significantly lower in the area grazed since 1984. In the heathland community the number of species and cover of the moss layer were significantly higher in the 1984 area and ectorganic and endorganic horizons significantly thicker in the ungrazed area. It is suggested that these effects are the result of an increased availability of light, but possibly also of a decreased stock of organic matter and nutrients, due to a decreased input of litter and accelerated rates of decomposition. Nomenclature: Van der Meijden et al. (1992) for phanerogams; Corley et al. (1981) for mosses; Grolle (1983) for hepatics.  相似文献

Analysis of growth rate in Mya arenaria using the Von Bertalanffy equation   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Field studies were conducted in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, to determine linear shell growth rates for Mya arenaria. These rates were then compared with those reported for the same species from other locations. Most shell deposition occurred from March through November of each year. Winter interruptions in growth were not as marked in the small clams as in the larger ones (>60.0 mm). Annual variations in growth were slight during the period 1973–1974. Growth of mature clams (>35.0 mm) slowed during the spawning season. No significant sexual dimorphism in mean annual growth rates was detected. Winter rings were shown to be a reliable method for determining age in clams from Gloucester. Age-size relationships, based on two independent measures of annual growth, winter rings and tagging experiments, were computed using the Von Bertalanffy growth equation. No well-defined latitudinal patcerns in growth could be established for M. arenaria.  相似文献

The coastline near the southern tip of Africa is characterized by large mobile dunes that are driven along wide beaches by strong winds throughout the year. This results in the blockage of the river mouths causing severe flooding of the low-lying farmland of the Agulhas Plain during the rainy winter season. Large parts of the driftsands were stabilized with the European dune pioneer species Marram grass (Ammophila arenaria), which has proved highly invasive along the North American west coast. In order to establish the potential invasiveness ofA. arenaria in South African coastal dune systems and its role in the succession of a large stabilization area, studies were carried out on De Mond Nature Reverve. Using aerial photos, maps and planting records, the vegetation of sites of various ages were sampled. By means of this chronosequence of stands, there is clear evidence that succession takes place at De Mond. Four communities are distinguished, varying from recent plantings ofA. arenaria to mature dune thicket or dune fynbos (heath) vegetation. These relate to four different stages of succession,A. arenaria occurring in reduced abundance in the older communities. After 50 years, formerA. arenaria areas are usually covered by dense dune scrub and in some places even in asteraceous dune fynbos. Succession is most rapid in sheltered, moist dune slacks, butA. arenaria remains vigorous in conditions favourable for its growht, i.e. on exposed, steep dune slopes with strong sand movement.A. arenaria does not appear to spread unaidedly at De Mond and has been successfully used for temporary dune stabilization.  相似文献

Food habits of two sympatric species-pairs of skates (Raja erinacea-R. ocellata and R. radiata-R. senta), which occur off the east coast of North America were investigated. Stomachs from over 1600 specimens of the 4 species were collected during winter, summer, and autumn of 1969 and the winter of 1970. Diets of R. erinacea and R. ocellata consisted largely of amphipods, decapod crustaceans and polychaetes. However, R. ocellata consumed relatively more fishes and polychaetes and less decapods than R. erinacea. These two skates ate many of the same species but in different proportions; R. ocellata tended to feed on infauna and R. erinacea tended to feed on epifauna. Food preferences of the two species may be correlated to the difference in shape of the mouth and number of tooth rows. R. radiata and R. senta both fed heavily on decapod crustaceans and euphausids, but polychaetes were relatively more important to R. radiata and mysids were relatively more important to R. senta. R. radiata had a very diversified diet and fed on both epifauna and infauna. The diet of R. senta was very restricted and consisted almost entirely of epifauna. Diets of the two species-pairs were similar, but isopods and bivalves were more important to the R. erinacea-R. ocellata pair and euphausids and mysids were more important to the R. radiata-R. senta pair. These differences may reflect differences in the benthic communities with which the species-pairs are associated. Amount of overlap in resource utilization of the pairs of skates was compared with that of some other congeneric organisms.Virginia Institute of Marine Science Contribution No. 727.  相似文献
