At the present, the long period (from 3 up to 12 months) to form roots from rhizome cuttings of Posidonia oceanica is the major cause of transplant failure. To promote earlier rooting, the effects of different concentrations (5 and 10 mg/l) of two auxins, namely indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and α-naphtalen aetic acid (NAA), and the time of collection on rooting of plagiotropic and orthotropic cuttings of P. oceanica were tested. Rooting, survival and growth of cuttings were assessed 1 month after planting in a mesocosm. Results demonstrated that the use of auxin was essential to achieve root initiation within the observation period. Irrespective of plant source and collection time, IBA and NAA (5 mg/l) treatments increased the rooting capacity in cuttings. The highest rooting success (i.e. percentage of the survived cuttings that rooted) obtained was 33%. Results also revealed that the survival rate and percentages of cuttings with leaf growth and emergence of new leaves on their terminal shoot were influenced by the collection time × plant source interaction, but were unaffected by the auxin treatment. Orthotropic cuttings taken in November and February showed the highest survival rate (100%). No differences in survival among months were detected for plagiotropic cuttings. In May and July, more plagiotropic cuttings survived (80±7 and 75±6%) compared to orthotropic cuttings (58±7 and 51±4%). Overall, more plagiotropic cuttings showed leaf elongation compared to orthotropic ones, but the inverse was observed in November. A higher percentage of cuttings with emergence of new leaves was observed in the plagiotropic type as compared to the orthotropic one, and in general February and November were the best months for leaf production (28±4 and 38±7%). Finally, the percentage of cuttings that had changed leaf growth orientation (from orthotropic to plagiotropic) was significantly higher in November (63±13%) compared to the other months and tended to be higher in cuttings treated with the auxins compared to controls. These preliminary findings indicate that exposure to IBA or NAA (5 mg/l) was effective in stimulating rooting in P. oceanica without inhibiting plant growth. Therefore, this simple pre-planting practice should be beneficial in restoration attempts. Based on the trend observed, rhizomes should be prepared preferably in late autumn–winter and then planted into restoration stands to achieve a prompt rooting response and the best survival rate. Clearly, future work is needed to maximize the rooting success of cuttings.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to unveil the potential of some of the unexplored remote sensing techniques for mangrove studies. The paper deals with the classification of an Earth Observing–1 Hyperion image of the mangrove area of Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha, India into mangrove floristic composition classes. Out of 196 calibrated bands of the image, 56 were found to be highly uncorrelated and contained maximum information; therefore, these 56 bands were used for classification. Amongst the three full–pixel classifiers tested in the investigation, Support Vector Machine produced the best results in terms of training pixel accuracy with overall precision of 96.85 %, in comparison to about 70–72.0 % for the other two classifiers. A total of five mangrove classes were obtained – pure or dominant class of Heritiera fomes, mixed class of H. fomes, mixed Excoecaria agallocha with Avicennia officinalis, mixed class of fringing Sonneratia apetala and class comprising of mangrove associates with salt resistant grasses. Post–classification field data also established the same. Pure or dominant classes of H. fomes occupied more than 50 % of the total mangrove vegetation in the forest blocks of the National Park. Spectral profile matching of image pixels with that of insitu collected canopy reflectance profile revealed good match for H. fomes (pure or dominant stands). Red–edge index, which was a preferred criterion for matching was notably correlated in case of H. fomes and E. agallocha. The outcomes indicated the efficacy of hyperspectral canopy reflectance library for such kind of work. It is hoped that the methodology presented in this paper will prove to be useful and may be followed for producing mangrove floristic maps at finer levels.  相似文献

Kelp and other seaweeds are traditionally used in many parts of the world as a soil amendment on arable fields. Seaweeds contain biochemical compounds that can act as plant growth regulators in terrestrial plants. In a low-intensity arable grassland in northwest Scotland an organic fertilizer, kelp (Laminaria digitata) has been used for hundreds of years, due to its anticipated positive effect as a soil conditioner and provider of plant nutrients. In this study the effects of kelp on germination and rooting of crops and native plants from this area were investigated in soil-free media. Germination was studied by incubation in the presence of kelp solutions. Rooting of plant cuttings was assessed after a pulse treatment with kelp solutions, and indole-3 acetic acid (IAA) as a reference plant growth regulator. Germination percentage of Plantago lanceolata, Trifolium repens and Avena strigosa seeds increased significantly when incubated with 0.05% kelp solutions. Total root weight and the individual weight of roots produced in cuttings of Vigna radiata and P. lanceolata were significantly increased when exposed to a 0.5% solution of kelp. Plant vigour, assessed visually, decreased significantly for P. lanceolata exposed to kelp at concentrations of 0.5 and 5.0% indicating the presence of a threshold level for an inhibitory effect of kelp at these concentrations, which may be due to high salinity. The results confirmed the presence of plant growth regulators in kelp, and indicates that amendment with kelp may potentially affect plant community composition. The threshold levels where some plants responded negatively to kelp amendment were close to or lower than the theoretical concentrations of kelp in soil water at field conditions with the current doses used on the machair, indicating that care should be taken in either administering kelp at the appropriate dose or leaching out salt before application.  相似文献

We determined the temporal evolution of amylase, cellulase, laminarinase and protease in the digestive gland and crystalline style of cockles Cerastoderma edule held over 9 to 12 d in the presence and absence of food. Cockles were fed a constant diet of 1.5 mm3 l−1 of Tetraselmis suecica for 9 to 12 d and were then starved for 6 to 8 d in late summer (September 1992) and in winter (January 1993). Feeding increased the dry weight and total cellulase, laminarinase and protease activities of the digestive gland irrespective of season, whereas amylase activity remained unchanged. In winter (i.e. when cockles are metabolically weak) the response was faster and stronger, especially for protease. An additional experiment in September starved cockles for 20 d before resuming feeding. In agreement with the seasonal differences, the presence of food after prolonged starvation induced a rapid and marked increase in protease in the digestive gland of the cockles. In winter, the possible effects of the biochemical composition of food on their enzymatic response were tested by feeding two groups of cockles with the same ration of T. suecica but harvested at different growth phases. A compensatory induction of cellulases occurred in cockles fed on T. suecica with a lower carbohydrate content. In the crystalline style, the protein level and carbohydrase fell during the first day of feeding and increased during the first day of subsequent starvation. These results indicate that the release of enzymes from the style prevails over the incorporation of enzymes during the early stages of feeding, whereas the opposite occurs during starvation. DNA sequence diversity of octopods was investigated using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase III gene (mtCOIII). DNA was obtained from ethanol- or formalin-fixed tissue of 15 specimens belonging to Octopus mimus Gould, 1852, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 and Scaeurgus unicirrhus d'Orbigny, 1840, from coastal waters of the Mediterranean (France), the southwestern Atlantic (Brazil), the Caribbean (Costa Rica) and the southeastern/tropical Pacific (north Chile/Costa Rica). A 612 bp fragment of the mtCOIII gene was sequenced and aligned to the orthologous sequences available from northeastern Pacific Octopus species. Possible phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed. The mtCOIII gene tree revealed two main clusters, one comprised O. rubescens, O. dofleini and O. californicus, while the other included all O. vulgaris specimens, O. bimaculatus, O. bimaculoides and O. mimus. With one exception all South American haplotypes including O. bimaculatus and O. bimaculoides appeared as the sister group of the Mediterranean haplotype of O. vulgaris, indicating that most of the South American O. vulgaris specimens investigated would not belong to the recently redescribed species O. vulgaris restricted to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. The treatment of O. mimus as a species distinct from Mediterranean O. vulgaris is supported by a high nucleotide divergence of 12.7%. Pigment contents, proteins and net photosynthesis were investigated in fully developed leaf of 1-year-old seedlings of six mangroves (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora apiculata) and mangrove associates (Caesalpinia bonduc, Cerbera manghas, Derris heterophylla, Thespesia populnea), collected from Bhitarkanika, located on the east coast of India. Large variations in the photosynthetic rates (PN) among the six species were observed, ranging from 10.16 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1 in C. bonduc to 15.28 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1 in R. apiculata. The total leaf protein content ranged from 12.09 mg g-1 dry wt in T. populnea to 51.89 mg g-1 dry wt in B. gymnorrhiza. The chlorophyll a/b ratio was typically about 3.0 in all the studied species, except C. bonduc (2.8). Photosynthetic rates and chl a/b ratio in the leaves were found to be correlated. Analysis of chlorophyll and xanthophyll spectra suggested: (1) variations in different forms and amounts of carotenes as well as xanthophylls and (2) the presence of high amounts of near-UV-absorbing substances in leaves, particularly in the two mangroves (B. gymnorrhiza, R. apiculata) and a mangrove associate (T. populnea), which appears to be an adaptive feature. Estimation of the chl a/b ratios in isolated thylakoids yielded a low value of 1.8 for R. apiculata and >2.6 for other species. The total protein/chlorophyll ratios in thylakoids varied considerably from 3.14 (D. heterophylla) to 10.88 (T. populnea) among the mangrove associates and from 16.09 to 18.88 between the members of the Rhizophoraceae. The chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios in thylakoids of the six species were more or less similar. The absorption spectra for washed thylakoids of C. manghas and D. heterophylla exhibited absorption characteristics typical for C3-plant thylakoids. However, thylakoids isolated from R. apiculata, B. gymnorrhiza, C. bonduc and T. populnea exhibited an unusual increase in absorption in the blue region (380-410 nm) of the absorption spectrum. The presence of high-absorbing (in the short-wavelength, near-UV region) pigments appears to be closely associated with the thylakoids in R. apiculata and T. populnea. Our results, therefore, suggest a wide range of variation, not only in protein and pigment contents of photosynthetic tissues, but also in the spectral characteristics and composition of the pigments in mangrove species. An understanding of the nature of these pigments in mangroves and their associates, under their natural conditions and especially in relation to eco-physiological adaptations, is necessary, not only in relation to conservation, but also to allow propagation under different salinity conditions.  相似文献

The in vitro study was carried out to examine the toxicity of four commercially used pesticides (phorate, mancozeb, chlorpyrifos, and endosulfan) at the recommended dose (1X) and higher field doses (1.5X, 2X, 2.5X, and 3X) on plant growth-promoting activities of Burkholderia sp. strain L2, isolated from pesticide-treated rhizosphere of Lycopersicon esculentum. At the recommended dose, level of toxicity of all the pesticides to phosphate solubilization activity and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production was less detrimental as compared to exceeding doses. At maximum dose rate of each pesticide, the percentage decrease in phosphate solubilization and IAA production over control was found in order of chlorpyrifos < mancozeb < endosulfan < phorate. Present study proves that Burkholderia sp. strain L2 could be used as a potential microbial inoculant in the agricultural soil having persistent pesticide residues.  相似文献

Hydrolytic enzyme activities were determined in tissue extracts of the two North Sea ctenophores Pleurobrachia pileus and Beroe gracilis. The following activities were measured in field samples and characterized according to their mean specific activities and their pH optima: protease, aminopeptidase, amylase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, -glucosidase, chitinase, carboxylesterase, phosphatase. Many of the enzyme activities are correlated, indicating their control by the same factors (i.e. nutritional conditions). Differences found between the phosphatase activities and the apparent lack of the chitinolytic system in B. gracilis reflect the differences in body composition and food specialization in both ctenophores, respectively. The low amylase and -glucosidase activities in both ctenophores agree with the low carbohydrate content of their prey. In spite of high carboxylesterase activities, no lipolytic activity was detected in either of the ctenophores. In a laboratory feeding experiment with P. pileus, the enzyme activities increased but did not reach the activities found in the field samples. In B. gracilis, seasonal variations of some enzyme activities are discussed in relation to the seasonal abundance of its prey, P. pileus.  相似文献

In this study we examined how the variation in the distribution of six species of seabird trematodes was influenced by human activities along the subarctic Barents Sea coast of northern Norway. This was done by comparing the prevalence of the parasites in two species of intermediate host (Littorinasaxatilis and Littorina obtusata) on seashores near fishing industry complexes, fish farms and at control sites. In L. saxatilis there were higher prevalences at sites influenced by human activities for three out of five trematode species (Microphallus piriformes,  M. similis, Cryptocotyle lingua) which have gulls (Larus spp.) as their predominant final hosts, while in L. obtusata, only  M. similis was more common at sites with human activity. For  M. pygmaeus, a trematode which has the common eider (Somateria mollissima) as its most predominant final host, the prevalence in L.saxatilis tended to be higher at sites with fishing industry, but differences were not significant. No such tendency was found in L. obtusata for this trematode. The overall prevalence in L. obtusata was lower than in L.␣saxatilis. This indicates that the vulnerability to trematode infection differs between the two snail species depending on the variation in the distribution patterns in the intertidal zone. Gulls tend to concentrate in areas near fishing industry and fish farms to feed on fish offal, which leads to an increase in the transmission between hosts, and to a higher level of parasite infection, locally. The pattern of settlement over time of three broadcast spawning coral species (Cyphastrea serailia, Acanthastrea lordhowensis, and Goniastrea australensis) from the Solitary Islands (30°00′S; 153°20′E) was studied in 1995 and 1996 in order to determine the maximum length of time these larvae could remain in the water column and still retain the ability to settle and metamorphose. Larvae were maintained in aquaria and the number which had settled on biologically-conditioned tile pairs was monitored every 5 to 10 d. While the majority of larvae settled quickly after becoming competent, some larvae survived and settled for extended periods after spawning. Competency periods ranged from 26 d for C. serailia to 56 d for G. australensis and 78 d for A. lordhowensis. These data greatly extend the known competency periods for larvae of broadcast-spawning corals and indicate the potential for transport of broadcast-spawned coral larvae over large distances. Medium to long-distance larval dispersal of the species studied provides a mechanism for their widespread distribution in subtropical regions, on reefs which are often widely spaced and relatively isolated. The abundance, biomass and distribution of Solenicola setigera, a colonial heterotrophic protist found only with the centric chain-forming diatom Leptocylindusmediterraneus, are reported for four major ocean basins. The distribution is cosmopolitan, and abundances and biomass are usually low (<500 colonies l−1); however, in the summer of 1993, we observed a major biomass component (range = 5 to 31 μg C l−1) in the surface waters of the North Atlantic attributable to S. setigera. These colonies of S. setigera were exceptionally large, and unusual in possessing high abundances of Synechococcus sp., a normally solitary cyanobacterium, embedded in the matrix covering the cells.  We examined the genetic identities of 49 individuals of four species of eels in the genus Anguilla Shaw, A. anguilla, A. japonica, A. reinhardti and A. rostrata, using the random(ly) amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR technique. We used 15 random decamer primers. Out of the 22 148 amplification products detected, 454 markers were evaluated using Nei's distance coefficient, two numerical methods (neighbor-joining, UPGMA), and phylogenetic analysis using parsimony (PAUP). Both numerical and parsimony methods were congruent and confirmed the specific status of all four examined Anguilla species. In all dendrograms, all individuals of each of the species clustered together within four closed groups with highly significant bootstrap values (between 97 and 100%). Additionally 1 to 18 species-specific monomorphic diagnostic fragments were detected in three of the species; none were detected in A. anguilla. Mean interspecific genetic distances ranged from 0.384 to 0.559, with the minimum between A. anguilla and A. rostrata and the maximum between A. anguilla and A. reinhardti. Individuals collected at one locality and belonging to a single species did not cluster together, and neither were any diagnostic monomorphic fragments found for individuals of single localities. This probably reflects a random dispersal of larvae in ocean currents before they reach coastal waters. Among all possible species pairs, only the two Atlantic species were consistently clustered in all dendrograms, with highly significant bootstrap values (100%). Additionally, we detected ten diagnostic markers for this pair of eel species. From RAPD data, we suggest a phylogram which was routed by the descending analysis method: A. reinhardti appears to have been the first species to diverge from a putative common ancestor of the four eel species. Later, A. japonica separated from the hypothetical ancestor of the Atlantic species, which then split recently into A. anguilla and A. rostrata. The close relationship of A. anguilla and A. rostrata is indicated by their low genetic distance (GD = 0.384) and a high degree of shared RAPD fragments (SF = 71.2%); this compares with the following means for all other species pairs: ( = 0.531,  = 44.2%). An efficient in vitro mass multiplication protocol was developed for selected species of screw pine (Pandanus fascicularis Lam., P. furcatus Roxb.). The protocol could be successfully used for large scale production of planting materials leading to cultivation and making bio-fences or green belts in coastal areas, wetlands for protection and preventing soil erosion. This will facilitate the replenishment of the bio resource and also provide good breeding space for various fauna associated with it. For developing the tissue culture protocol, shoot tips and tillers from the mature plants were used as the explants. Surface sterilization with 0.1 % mercuric chloride for 1 min. Yielded good fraction (65 %) of contamination free explants. Explants inoculated in MS solid medium supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP, 2.5 mg/l) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA, 0.5 mg/l), induced 2–3 shoot buds in 5 weeks. These buds either individually or along with the explant portion, sub-cultured to fresh media containing the same hormonal combinations, resulted induction of 5–6 shoot buds in 4 weeks. Repeated subcultures of shoot buds in the same medium produced 8–10 shoot buds in every 4 weeks. Shoot elongation was achieved (~ 3 cm) by transferring the shoot clusters or individual shoots to basal medium, and the elongated shoots were rooted in vitro or ex vitro. Root induction in shoots (87.4 %) was achieved in MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Rooted shoots were established in paper/polythene cups filled with fine sand, which subsequently recorded 85 % establishment under the shade-net house with proper irrigation. Plants grown in poly-bags were later successfully established in different field conditions and recorded 100 % survival.  相似文献

Allozyme variation was used to investigate the genetic structure of the coral reef fishes Stegastes nigricans, Epinephelus merra and Acanthurus triostegus around New Caledonia. Each species was sampled from each of three sites in the ≃1000 km circumference of the lagoon of New Caledonia. Allelic variation was recorded for each species at 14, 13 and 17 loci, respectively, and heterozygosity diversity (H s) was 0.082, 0.065 and 0.116, respectively. Analysis of genetic differentiation between sites produced inconsistent results between species, with spatial heterogeneity in two species (S. nigricans, F st  = 0.038; A. triostegus, F st = 0.049) and homogeneity in one species (E. merra, F st = 0.000). Hydrological and climatic data from the lagoon suggest that the eastern and western sides of the lagoon are isolated, since they lie in water masses of different origin. This may explain the genetic differentiation and restricted gene flow found at a local scale for S. nigricans and A. triostegus. Homogeneity in populations of E. merra is discussed in relation to its low genetic diversity and its reproductive behaviour. Received: 23 April 1997 / Accepted: 25 September 1997  相似文献

The relative contribution of dissolved nitrogen (ammonium and dissolved free amino acids DFAAs) to the nitrogen budget of the reef-building coral Pocillopora damicornis was assessed for colonies growing on control and ammonium-enriched reefs at One Tree Island (southern Great Barrier Reef) during the ENCORE (Enrichment of Nutrient on Coral Reef; 1993 to 1996) project. P. damicornis acquired ammonium at rates of between 5.1 and 91.8 nmol N cm−2 h−1 which were not affected by nutrient treatment except in the case of one morph. In this case, uptake rates decreased from 80.5 to 42.8 nmol cm−2 h−1 (P < 0.05) on exposure to elevated ammonium over 12 mo. The presence or absence of light during measurement did not influence the uptake of ammonium ions. Nitrogen budgets revealed that the uptake of ammonium from concentrations of 0.11 to 0.13 μM could completely satisfy the demand of growing P. damicornis for new nitrogen. P. damicornis also took up DFAAs at rates ranging from 4.9 to 9.8 nmol N cm−2 h−1. These rates were higher in the dark than in the light (9.0 vs 5.1 nmol m−2 h−1, P < 0.001). Uptake rates were highest for the amino acids serine, arginine and alanine, and lowest for tyrosine. DFAA concentrations within the ENCORE microatolls that received ammonium were undetectable, whereas they ranged up to 100 nM within the control microatolls. The contribution of DFAAs to the nitrogen budget of P. damicornis constituted only a small fraction of the nitrogen potentially contributed by ammonium under field conditions. Even at the highest field concentrations measured during this study, DFAAs could contribute only ≃11.3% of the nitrogen demand of P.␣damicornis. This contribution, however, may be an important source of nitrogen when other sources such as ammonium are scarce or during periods when high concentrations of DFAAs become sporadically available (e.g. cell breakage during fish-grazing).  We assessed the efficacy of tetracycline, calcein and strontium chloride for validating the periodicity of otolith growth-increments in eight species of tropical marine gobies (family Gobiidae). We compared the number of fishes in which the otoliths were successfully marked when each of these chemicals was administered by intraperitoneal injection or immersion bath at a range of doses and immersion times. All three chemicals could produce a detectable mark in the otoliths of five reef-flat gobies, Asterropteryx semipunctatus, Amblygobius bynoensis, Istigobius goldmanni, Valenciennea muralis and Amblygobius phalaena; however, tetracycline injection at 50 mg kg−1 is recommended because it produced a brighter otolith mark than calcein and is cheaper and quicker to detect than strontium chloride. Calcein immersion treatment of 125 mg l−1 for 24 h was the most successful treatment for two estuarine gobiids, Favonigobius reichei and Glossogobius biocellatus. No treatment produced a detectable mark in the otoliths of the coral-dwelling goby Gobiodon histrio. Adequate care in the preparation of otoliths was found to be essential for detection of the validation mark produced by tetracycline and calcein. Otolith microstructure and microchemistry were examined in juveniles of American (Anguilla rostrata) and European (A. anguilla) eels. Otolith increment width markedly increased from age 132 to 191 d (156 ± 18.9 d; mean ± SD) in A. rostrata and 163 to 235 d (198 ± 27.4 d; mean ± SD) in A. anguilla, both of which were coincident with drastic decreases in otolith Sr:Ca ratios, suggesting that metamorphosis from leptocephalus to glass eel began at those ages in each species. The duration of metamorphosis was estimated to be 18 to 52 d from otolith microstructure, for both species studied. Ages at recruitment were 171 to 252 d (206 ± 22.3 d; mean ± SD) in A. rostrata and 220 to 281 d (249 ± 22.6 d; mean ± SD) in A. anguilla. In these two species, positive linear relationships were found in ages between the beginning of metamorphosis and recruitment, suggesting that early metamorphosing larvae recruited at younger ages. Duration of the leptocephalus stage to recruitment in A. anguilla was about 40 d longer than that in A. rostrata. The geographical segregation between the two species in the Atlantic Ocean seems to be involved in the differences in the duration of the leptocephalus stage (age at metamorphosis). We document the distribution and abundance of seagrasses, as well as the intra-annual temporal patterns in the abundance of seagrasses and the productivity of the nearshore dominant seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) in the south Florida region. At least one species of seagrass was present at 80.8% of 874 randomly chosen mapping sites, delimiting 12,800 km2 of seagrass beds in the 17,000-km2 survey area. Halophila decipiens had the greatest range in the study area; it was found to occur over 7,500 km2. The range of T. testudinum was almost as extensive (6,400 km2), followed by Syringodium filiforme (4,400 km2), Halodule wrightii (3,000 km2) and Halophila engelmanni (50 km2 ). The seasonal maxima of standing crop was about 32% higher than the yearly mean. The productivity of T. testudinum was both temporally and spatially variable. Yearly mean areal productivity averaged 0.70 g m−2day−1, with a range of 0.05–3.29 g m−2 day−1. Specific productivity ranged between 3.2 and 34.2 mg g−1 day−1, with a mean of 18.3 mg g−1 day−1. Annual peaks in specific productivity occurred in August, and minima in February. Integrating the standing crop for the study area gives an estimate of 1.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum and 3.6 × 1010 g S. filiforme, which translate to a yearly production of 9.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum leaves and 2.4 × 1011 g S. filiforme leaves. We assessed the efficacy of rapid visual surveys for estimating abundance of seagrasses in south Florida by comparing these results to measures of leaf biomass for T. testudinum and S. filiforme. Our rapid visual surveys proved useful for quantifying seagrass abundance, and the data presented in this paper serve as a benchmark against which future change in the system can be quantified. Assimilation efficiencies (AEs) and physiological turnover-rate constants (k) of six trace elements (Ag, Am, Cd, Co, Se, Zn) in four marine bivalves (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin, Macoma balthica Linnaeus, Mercenaria mercenaria Linnaeus, and Mytilus edulis Linnaeus) were measured in radiotracer-depuration experiments. Egestion rates of unassimilated elements were highest during the first 24 h of depuration and declined thereafter. Significant egestion of unassimilated Co, however, continued for up to 5 d in Macoma balthica, Mercenaria mercenaria and Mytilus edulis. With the exception of the extremely low values for 110 mAg, 109Cd, and 65Zn in C. virginica, physiological turnover-rate constants (k) showed no general pattern of variation among elements, bivalve species or food types, and were relatively invariant. Values from  ≤0.001 to 0.1 d−1 were observed, but excluding those for Co, most values were  ≤0.04 d−1. In all four species, the AEs of Ag, Am, and Co were generally lower than those of Cd, Se, and Zn. The AEs of Ag, Cd, Se, and Zn in these bivalves are directly related to the proportion of each element in the cytoplasmic fraction of ingested phytoplankton, indicating that >80% of elements in a prey alga's cytoplasm was assimilated. C. virginica, Macoma balthica, and Mercenaria mercenaria assimilated ∼36% of the Ag and Cd associated with the non-cytoplasmic (membrane/organelle) fraction of ingested cells in addition to the cytoplasmic fraction. The ratio of AE:k, which is proportional to the consumer–prey trace-element bioaccumulation factor (concentration in consumer:concentration in prey) was generally greater for Cd, Se, and Zn than for Ag, Am, and Co. This ratio was lowest in Mytilus edulis, suggesting that this bivalve, the most widely employed organism in global biomonitoring, is relatively inefficient at accumulating important elements such as Ag, Cd, and Zn from ingested phytoplankton.
