Larval fishes likely use a variety of settlement cues to locate and navigate toward the habitats they will inhabit as juveniles. Information about the morphology and state of development of the sensory organs of larval stages of fishes provides insight into their capabilities at the time of settlement. The peripheral olfactory organ of wild-caught late-stage larvae and early juveniles and some adults of 14 species of the Caribbean reef fishes wrasses (Labridae), parrot fishes (Scaridae) and damselfish (Pomacentridae) were examined using scanning electron microscopy and compared in terms of settlement specificity. Ages in days after hatching and days post-settlement were determined from the otoliths. Morphology of the nares and the olfactory epithelium are described for these species by stage. The separation of the anterior and posterior nares occurred before settlement in the labrids but in some specimens of scarids this separation was not complete by the time of settlement. Densities of ciliated and microvillous receptor cells and non-sensory ciliated epithelial cells were calculated. Densities of ciliated receptor cells ranged from 0.389 μm−2 in a specimen of Thallasoma bifasciatum to 0.0057 μm−2 in Bodianus rufus and of microvillous receptor cells from 0.038 μm−2 in a Clepticus parrae juvenile to 0.266 μm−2 in a juvenile Doratonotus megalepis. Densities of non-sensory cilia, also associated with high olfactory ability, were also high. The olfactory organ in wrasses is well developed prior to settlement and is comparable to that of adult fishes. The possible role of olfaction in larval schooling, reef cue detection and orientation toward habitat at settlement is discussed.

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated in the restricted Bizerte Lagoon in 2002 and 2004. The 2002 study, carried out at one station from January to October, showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. High growth rates (0.9–1.04 day−1), chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations (6.6–6.8 μg l−1) and carbon biomass (392–398 μg C l−1) were recorded in summer (July), when several chain-forming diatoms had intensively proliferated and dominated the carbon biomass (74%). In 2004, four stations were studied during July, a period also characterized by the high proliferation of several diatoms that made up 70% of the algal carbon biomass. In 2004, growth rates (0.34–0.45 day−1) and biomass of algae (2.9–5.4 μg Chl a l−1 and 209–260 μg C l−1) were low, which may be related to the lower nutrient concentrations recorded in 2004. Microzooplankton >5 μm were mainly composed of heterotrophic dinoflagellates and ciliates. Microzooplankton biomass peaked during summer (2002 320–329, 2004 246–361 μg C l−1), in response to the enhanced phytoplankton biomass and production. The grazer biomass was dominated by ciliates (71–76%) in July 2002 and by heterotrophic dinoflagellates (52–67%) in July 2004. Throughout the year and at different stations, microzooplankton grazed actively on phytoplankton, removing 26–58% of the Chl a and 57-84% of the primary production. In 2002, the highest grazing impact was observed on the large algae (>10 μm) during the period of diatom dominance. These results have a significant implication for carbon export to depth. Indeed, the recycling of most of the diatom production by the microbial food web in the upper water column would reduce the flux of material to the seafloor. This should be considered when modeling the carbon cycling in coastal environments and under conditions of diatom dominance. During both studies, ciliates had higher growth rates (0.5–1.5 day−1) and a higher carbon demand (165–470 μg C l−1 day−1) than dinoflagellates (0.1–0.5 day−1, 33–290 μg C l−1 day−1). Moreover, when grazer biomass was dominated by ciliates (in July 2002), herbivory accounted for 71–80% of the C ingested by microzooplankton while it accounted only for 14–23% when dinoflagellates dominated the grazer biomass (in July 2004). These results suggest that, in contrast to findings from open coastal waters, ciliate species of the restricted Bizerte Lagoon were more vigorous grazers of the large algae (diatoms) than were dinoflagellates.  相似文献

The biology of a population of the cardinalfish Apogon rueppellii has been studied over several years (1977–1983) in the Swan Estuary in south-western Australia, using ramples collected monthly from the shallows by beach seine and from various depths by otter trawl. While the life cycle of this species typically lasts for one year, at the end of which time the mean length is 50 to 60 mm, some individuals survive for a further year and attain lengths up to 104 mm. A. rueppellii shows a marked tendency to move offshore into deeper water during the winter months. This tendency is more pronounced in the 1+ than in the 0+ year class and in larger than smaller 0+ individuals. An inshore movement of A. rueppellii in the spring is followed by spawning and by oral brooding by the males, which leads to the recruitment of large numbers of a new 0+ year class on to the banks during the summer. The offshore movement is correlated with changes in salinity and temperature. The larger catches taken by otter trawl during the day than at night indicate that A. rueppellii exhibits a diel pattern of activity. Mean fecundity ranged from 70 in the 45 to 49 mm size class to 345 in the 90 to 94 mm size class. Measurements of fecundity and the number of oral-brooded eggs demonstrated that the majority of the eggs released by the female are collected and incubated by the males. Copepods are ingested in relatively greater amounts by small than by large A. rueppellii, whereas the reverse situation occurs with larger crustaceans, polychaetes and small fish. The presence of greater amounts of copepods in the diet during the day and of amphipods at night probably reflects the diel activity patterns of the prey.  相似文献

Juvenile queen conch (Strombus gigas L.) occur in discrete aggregations within seemingly uniform seagrass beds throughout the Exuma Cays, Bahamas, suggesting that the aggregations occupy ecologically unique sectors of the habitat or that conch gain fitness by aggregated distribution. To examine the structure of a juvenile aggregation and to determine the underlying mechanisms which affect juvenile conch distribution, we axamined density, size composition, growth, survivorship, and movement patterns within a typical tidal-flow field nursery over a 14 mo period (August 1989 to September 1990). At the beginning of the study in August 1989, the conch population occupied 16.7 ha, with densities>0.2 juvenile conch m-2. The aggregation formed an ellipse, with longitudinal axis parallel to the main axis of the tidal current. Surveys conducted every 2 mo showed that conch density in the aggregation center remained constant while all other zones had lower densities which varied with time. In areas of high population density within the aggregation, several mass migrations of juveniles (20 to 99 conch m-2) occurred in early 1990. Tagged juveniles transplanted to zones outside the aggregation had high growth rates but suffered higher losses than individuals transplanted to the aggregation center. A tethering experiment confirmed the hypothesis that predator-induced mortality is significantly higher outside than inside the conch aggregation. Our results suggest that the queen conch aggregation occupied only a portion of the habitat that is optimal for feeding and growth. Aggregations could be maintained by differential mortality over a site; however, predation rates are probably density-dependent. Gregariousness, observed in translocation experiments, may provide an active mechanism for maintaining aggregated distribution and reducing mortality in conch nurseries. The ecological significance of aggregations should be considered in fisheries management and stock enhancement programs with queen conch.  相似文献

Summary On the basis of a family reconstitution study (Krummhörn, Germany, 18th und 19th centuries) it is shown how in one marriage cohort (1720–1750), family land ownership correlates with systematic fitness differentials. Farmers have a greater long-term fitness, on the average, than members of non-peasant population, and farmers possessing better than average wealth achieve a greater long-term fitness than farmers with medium-sized or small landholdings. The proximate causes herefore are to be found in both the varying patterns of marital fertility and in the differences in the marital and migration habits of the children from the various social groups. That is why the number of live births or even the number of surviving children is not the best estimate of a person's genetic contribution to the next generation of the local population. This can be shown by using a new algorithm for the assessment of long-term fitness differentials.  相似文献

The roundnose grenadierCoryphaenoides rupestris Gunnerus, 1765 occurs benthopelagically in the deepest parts of the Norwegian Deep, i.e., at depths >300 m in the Skagerrak. Based on studies of distribution carried out in the years 1984 to 1987, it appears that the concentrations contitute a largely self-sustaining population. From age-readings using transverse otolith sections, the population appears to consist of at least 50 to 60 age-groups and to include a very high proportion of old fish. Population growth-curves in terms of length and weight revealed that females grow comparatively fast for a longer time and attain greater asymptotic sizes than males. Maximum lengths appear however to be lower in the Skagerrak than in waters to the west of Scotland, and the length/weight data indicate that the weight at a given length (weight at length) of large individuals is less than reported from other areas. The major spawning season is in late autumn, probably extending into early winter. Fifty per-cent of females and males become mature for the first time at Age 10 and 8 yr, respectively. Corresponding pre-anal lengths are 11 and 8.5 cm.  相似文献

A prominent lateral-line system found in 10 mm long larvae of the deep-sea fish Cataetyx memorabilis Meyer-Rochow (1970) is not present in the adults. Size and height of larval lateral-line papillae measured in stereo pairs of electron micrographs are compared with light microscopy of sectioned material. Lateral-line papillae are separated from each other by 3 to 7 myomeres (0.5 to 1 mm). A papilla is 50 m wide and approximately 15 m high. The 7 or 8 sensory hairs, which are about 30 to 40 m long, are not embedded in a jellylike transparent substance. Behavioural and taxonomical consequences of the findings are discussed.  相似文献

Growth of sporelings of Hypnea cervicornis J. Agardh and H. chordacea Kuetzing in response to gradients of selected environmental factors has been investigated. The sporelings of H. cervicornis tolerated higher levels of the tested parameters (e.g. salinity and temperature) than those of H. chordacea. In all the treatments, the sporelings of H. cervicornis grew significantly faster than those of H. chordacea. Since the early 1980s, the eelgrass, Zostera marina L., population in the saline Lake Gevelingen, The Netherlands, is rapidly declining. An earlier study, in which long-term data on eelgrass coverage in this former estuary were correlated with several environmental variables, showed only one significant correlation: coverage was positively related to water column silicon levels. In addition, a negative correlation with salinity was observed, but this was not significant. In the present study, the effect of silicon and the effect of salinity on the development of Z. marina were investigated experimentally. Enhancement of dissolved silicon concentrations in the water did not stimulate Z. marina above-ground production or an increase in final above- and below-ground biomass. The highly significant correlation between eelgrass coverage and water column silicon levels, thus, remains to be explained. The results of the growth experiments did, however, demonstrate a clear effect of salinity on Z. marina growth. Plants cultured at 22 psu showed a higher production of shoots and leaves, resulting in more above-ground biomass, than plants grown at 32 psu. In addition, below-ground biomass was also higher at 22 psu. Measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence, performed with a PAM-fluorometer, indicated a reduction of photosynthesis in the high-salinity treatments. Thus, low salinity stimulates development of Z. marina from Lake Grevelingen. Eelgrass from such a historically estuarine area may be more sensitive to high salinities than other, more marine populations. Recovery of the autochthonous eelgrass population is expected to be favoured when the estuarine conditions of the seagrass area are re-established, or when restoration programmes are carried out with allochthonous ecotypes that are less sensitive to high salinities. The extant 40 bison (Bison bison) constituting the Texas State Bison Herd (TSBH; USA) are directly and exclusively descended from a bison herd assembled by Charles Goodnight in the 1880s, representing a historically and genetically valuable resource. The population currently suffers from low genetic variation, low heterozygosity, high calf mortality, and low natality rates compared with other closed bison populations. Population viability analysis using the VORTEX program previously indicated a 99% chance of population extinction within the next 41 years [J. Mamm. 85 (2004) in press]. We developed a stochastic simulation model to evaluate the genetic and demographic consequences of various management scenarios for the TSBH using genotypic data from 51 microsatellite loci and demographic information recorded over a 6-year period. Our results reveal that without the introduction of new genetic variation, approximately 37% of the representative microsatellite loci will become fixed as the TSBH continues to lose genetic variation at a staggering rate of 30–40% within the next 50 years. Furthermore, if the current trends in natality and mortality rates continue, our model indicates the TSBH faces a 99% chance of extinction in the next 51 years. With the importation of unrelated male bison into the TSBH, and under the assumption of increased fitness, the probability of population survival in the next 100 years increases to 100%, and the population will reach the approximate carrying capacity of 200 bison in 15–16 years. Furthermore, our model predicts increases in genetic diversity and heterozygosity of 24.7–48.4% and 17.5–36.5%, respectively, in the next 100 years following the addition of new genetic variation. We conclude that the importation of bison into the TSBH is necessary to prevent extinction and ensure long-term population survival.  相似文献

Caulerpa paspaloides (Bory) Greville were collected during the winter and summer (1978 to 1979) from the Florida Keys, USA. Thalli collected during the winter photosynthesized more efficiently at low light intensities (Ic<1, Ik=38 Exm-2xs-1) than did thalli collected in the summer (Ic=13, Ik=111 Exm-2xs-1). Summer thalli exhibited higher Pmax values (2.20 mgO2xg-1 dry wtxh-1) than winter thalli (1.70 mg O2xg-1 dry wtxh-1). Rates of rhizome elongation and frond initiation were strongly inhibited by winter temperatures. The maximum lethal temperature for summer thalli was 37° to 38°C as measured by both growth and photosynthesis. No evidence of nitrogen or phosphorus limitation was found. Relatively minor reductions in salinity (3S) resulted in significant increases in rhizome apex motality. Results indicate that low winter temperatures are responsible for reduced winter growth rates previously reported for the Key Largo population. Increased photosynthetic efficiency at low light intensities and preferential maintenance of rhizome elongation over frond initiation appear to allow this tropical macroalga to optimize growth and survival during the winter.  相似文献

Mortality rates of the coral reef fish Centropyge bicolor were based on the disappearance of known individual fish. Data were collected over three years from 1978 at four sites around Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia. To measure disappearance, membership of 36 harems (comprising about 150 fish at any one time) was determined at bimonthly intervals. Mortality rates varied significantly among the four study areas. A tenfold difference in mean mortality occurred between two of the areas. The ranking of areas according to mortality rate was similar for 1978–1979 and 1979–1980. The ranking of areas was again similar for 1980–1984 when mortality rates were determined from an additional census in June 1984. Average further life-expectancy of mature fish based on mortality rates varied from 1 yr in one study area to 5 to 13 yr in a different area.  相似文献

Wave exposure and habitat complexity have been used to explain variations in the distribution patterns and behavior of many reef fishes. This study analyzed the influence of both factors on density and foraging activity, and the influence of group size on foraging in three species of the genus Halichoeres (Labridae) on tropical rocky shores. It was shown that initial phases (IP) and terminal phases (TP) Halichoeres, were influenced by wave exposure, although foraging in Halichoeres brasiliensis TP was not influenced by wave exposure. The IP in all three species were positively associated with rugosity and algal cover while the TP was positively associated with depth. Habitat complexity also influences foraging in these species. Group size influenced foraging activity, except in H. brasiliensis TP. We also found variations in microhabitat patches used for foraging between species and differences in the stomach contents between species and phases, showing that functional roles change in response to ontogenetic shifts.  相似文献

The demersal fish fauna of Albatross Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, was sampled on seven cruises from August 1986 to November 1988, using a random stratified trawl survey. Four depth zones between 7 and 45 m were sampled during both day and night. The mean biomass of fish from all seven cruises was 297 kg ha–1 for days trawls and 128 kg ha–1 for night trawls. The overall mean catch rates were 922 kg h–1 for day trawls and 412 kg h–1 for night trawls. There were marked differences between cruises in both the biomass and catch rate. Approx 890 000 fish of 237 species were collected. Of these, 25 species comprised 82% of the total biomass and 74% of the overall catch rate. The dominant families were Leiognathidae, Haemulidae and Clupeidae, with Sciaenidae and Dasyatidae important at night.Leiognathus bindus was the most abundant species. Twenty-five species occurred in more than 50% of trawls, withCaranx bucculentus the most frequently caught (96% of all trawls). Thirty four species were predators on prawns; their absolute mean biomass was 50 kg ha–1 during the day and 39 kg ha–1 at night. The corresponding catch rates were 171 and 125 kg h–1. Multiple-regression analyses were used to discriminate the effects of diel, seasonal, depth and cruise patterns. Of the 31 most abundant species, 15 showed diel patterns of abundance; 11 species showed seasonal patterns of abundance; 23 species had differential depth distribution; and 13 species showed significant cruise-to-cruise variation in abundance. Cruise variations in abundance were tested against salinity, temperature, tidal exchange, plankton biomass and prawn abundances as well as periods (and lags) of total rainfall prior to sampling. Only total rainfall showed any significant correlation. Total rainfall over a period of 6 wk immediately prior to sampling showed significant positive correlations with the abundances of five species, with overall daytime catch rates, and with the suite of 34 prawn predators. Rainfall and river runoff into Albatross Bay were significantly correlated. In Albatross Bay, the complex of factors affecting fish abundances and the magnitude of between-cruise differences indicate that such tropical communities may be unpredictable and are not seasonally constant. The high catch rates in Albatross Bay relative to similar tropical areas elsewhere are discussed and attributed to the light exploitation of the Albatross Bay stocks. Other than a prawn fishery, there is no commercial trawling in Albatross Bay. Hence, the only fishing mortality is a result of by-catch from prawn trawling. The annual total of such fish by-catch is probably less than 10% of the estimated standing stock of 93 000 tonnes.  相似文献

Shells of the bivalve molluscs Chamelea gallina L. and Callista chione L. from the Bay of Trieste (northern Adriatic) were analysed for their oxygen and carbon isotopic composition. The main purpose of this study was to obtain detailed information on the biological behaviour and, particularly, on the growth rates and the settlement time of these two species. Isotopic measurements were carried out on "spot" samples collected from the umbo to the ventral margin of each shell. The results obtained from nine specimens of C. gallina (plus some 20 specimens studied only for the isotopic composition of their initial umbo and for the last section of their ventral edge) and from two specimens of C. chione allow the following conclusions: (1) the calcium carbonate of C. gallina shells is not deposited under isotopic equilibrium conditions with the environmental variables (temperature and oxygen isotopic composition of seawater); (2) this species usually initiates precipitation of carbonate during the springtime, although some late summer-early autumn generation also occurs; (3) the rate of calcium carbonate deposition decreases with increasing age, and the overall accretion rate is a rather slow one; (4) there is a negative correlation between the carbon isotopic composition and the size of each shell; (5) the mean growth rate of the shells can be easily evaluated according to the oxygen isotopic composition of the spot measurements; (6) the specimens of C. chione do not precipitate the calcium carbonate of their shells in isotopic equilibrium with environmental conditions; (7) their accretion rate is rather fast during the first years of their life and progressively and considerably reduced after about 5 years; (8) the carbon isotopic composition of these shells does not show the marked evolution towards more negative values shown by C. gallina, suggesting that neither respiratory CO2 nor carbon species derived from the oxidation of organic matter are systematically used for the precipitation of shell carbonate; and (9) a marked preference for the warmer half of the year is shown by the oldest specimen of C. chione (12 years).  相似文献

In response to a call from the US National Research Council for research programs to combine their data to improve sea turtle population assessments, we analyzed somatic growth data for Northwest Atlantic (NWA) loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from 10 research programs. We assessed growth dynamics over wide ranges of geography (9–33°N latitude), time (1978–2012), and body size (35.4–103.3 cm carapace length). Generalized additive models revealed significant spatial and temporal variation in growth rates and a significant decline in growth rates with increasing body size. Growth was more rapid in waters south of the USA (<24°N) than in USA waters. Growth dynamics in southern waters in the NWA need more study because sample size was small. Within USA waters, the significant spatial effect in growth rates of immature loggerheads did not exhibit a consistent latitudinal trend. Growth rates declined significantly from 1997 through 2007 and then leveled off or increased. During this same interval, annual nest counts in Florida declined by 43 % (Witherington et al. in Ecol Appl 19:30–54, 2009) before rebounding. Whether these simultaneous declines reflect responses in productivity to a common environmental change should be explored to determine whether somatic growth rates can help interpret population trends based on annual counts of nests or nesting females. Because of the significant spatial and temporal variation in growth rates, population models of NWA loggerheads should avoid employing growth data from restricted spatial or temporal coverage to calculate demographic metrics such as age at sexual maturity.  相似文献

The effects of the water-soluble fraction of dead leaves of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. on the growth of 8 species of micro-algae (pennate and centric diatoms, dinoflagellates, and a green flagellate) and a bacterium were studied on agar plates and in liquid culture. The extracts of leaves which had been dead from a few days to 2 wk inhibited growth and often killed cells in all test organisms. Extracts were lethal even at concentrations equivalent to as little as 0.25 mg dry leaf ml-1, but inhibition decreased when extracts were prepared from leaves aged in the laboratory for 35 d (loss of anti-bacterial activity) or 90 d (loss of anti-algal activity). Extracts of leaves which had aged and dried several months in the field had no effect, except at very high concentrations (13 mg dry leaf ml-1) when the lag phase of growth was prolonged several days in a culture of the chlorophyte Platymonas sp. The active fraction in eelgrass leaves may be important in controlling initial growth of micro-organisms on eelgrass detritus, and it could determine the composition and activity of the epiphytic community on living leaves.  相似文献

The habitat, density and growth rate for an intertidal population of Concholepas concholepas (Bruguière, 1789) were studied at Las Cruces, Chile (Lat. 33°30′S; Long. 71°38′W) during 1977–1978. The growth rate (3.67 mm month-1) was determined in a newly settled group, whose average length was 11.3 mm, and whose age was estimated at 3 months. The densities found ranged between 1.1 and 107.3 “locos” m-2. Based on these results, the time of settlement of C. concholepas was calculated; capsule deposition, maximum maturity and recruitment reported by other authors for different localities are discussed.  相似文献
