The 7Be activity concentrations measured from 1996 to 1998 at four high-altitude stations, Jungfraujoch—Switzerland, Zugspitze—Germany, Sonnblick—Austria and Mt. Cimone—Italy, were analyzed in combination with a set of, meteorological and atmospheric parameters such as the tropopause height, relative and specific humidity and also in conjunction with 3D back-trajectories in order to investigate the climatological features of 7Be. A frequency distribution analysis on 7Be activity concentrations revealed the existence of two concentration classes around 1.5 and 6 mBq m−3 and a transition class between the two modes of the distribution at 3–4 mBq m−3. Cross-correlation analysis performed between 7Be and a number of meteorological and atmospheric parameters at the first three stations showed a strong negative correlation with relative humidity (−0.56, −0.51, −0.41) indicating the importance of wet scavenging as a controlling mechanism. Also, the positive correlation with the height of 3-days back-trajectories and tropopause height (+0.49/+0.43, +0.59/+0.36, +0.44/+0.38) shows that downward transport from the upper or middle to lower troposphere within anticyclonic conditions plays also an important role. Trajectory statistics showed that low 7Be concentrations typically originate from lower-altitude subtropical ocean areas, while high concentrations arrive from the north and high altitudes, as is characteristic for stratospheric intrusions. Although the 7Be activity concentrations are highly episodic, the monthly means indicate an annual cycle with a late-summer maximum at all stations. The correlation coefficients calculated for monthly means of the 7Be and atmospheric data suggest that the main predictor controlling the seasonality of the 7Be concentrations is tropopause height (+0.76, +0.56, +0.60), reflecting more vertical transport from upper tropospheric levels into the lower troposphere during the warm season than during the cold season.  相似文献

The influence of two intensive low-altitude atmospheric-dust intrusions on the activity levels of 137Cs and 40K as well as atmospheric particle matter (PM10) concentrations in the lower atmosphere of the Canary Islands are analysed here. These two events took place at the beginning of January 2002 and March 2004, respectively. 3D atmospheric back-trajectories indicated that the main source of dust material involved in the considered atmospheric intrusions came from NW Africa. A consequence of these dust intrusions was the major increase of PM10 concentrations in the lower atmosphere. Both episodes were characterised by having weekly averages of PM10 concentration surpassing 150 μg m−3, higher than the daily PM10 limit value established by the EC/1999/30 directive for PM10 from 2005. Similarly, during these two events, both 137Cs and 40K activities increased by a factor of 6 and 13 as well as 13 and 14, respectively, over the basal values calculated for each radionuclide and time period (0.59±0.02 and 0.88±0.07 μBq m−3 as well as 12±6 and 24±8 μBq m−3).  相似文献

During a one-year period, from November 1998 upto October 1999, the atmospheric activity concentrations of the short-lived (222Rn)-progeny (218Po, 214Pb, 214Po) were measured every 4 h in the open air, using α-spectrometry. The concentration data of short-lived radon progeny together with meteorological variables (relative humidity, air temperature, and wind speed) were used for a comprehensive regression analysis of daily time variation of radioactivity in the air. The seasonal concentration pattern of all short-lived radon progeny shows the same trend for diurnal variation with higher values at night and early morning hours compared with lower values at noon and in afternoon. The activity concentrations were observed to be higher during the winter months (November–January) than in other seasons. The mean activity concentrations of 218Po, 214Pb and 214Po within the whole year were found to be 6.7±0.8, 4.9±0.5 and 4.4±0.3 Bq m−3, respectively. Also, within that time period, approximately 120 samples were analysed to determine the concentrations of the long-lived radon decay product 210Pb and the cosmogenic radionuclide 7Be using a single-filter technique. The course of 210Pb air concentration is characterized by higher values in autumn/winter season and lower values in spring/summer season. The seasonal concentration pattern of 7Be reaches regular maximum values in the spring to early summer months. The annual average concentration values of 210Pb and 7Be have been found to be 0.37±0.06 and 2.0±0.09 mBq m−3, respectively. A mean aerosol mass concentration of 36.6±6.2 μg m−3 was also determined during the measurements of the long-lived radionuclides. The majority of attached 210Pb and 7Be were observed at lower aerosol mass concentrations while small fractions of attached activities were found to be associated with the higher mass concentrations.  相似文献

Three years of hourly atmospheric radon measurements at Sado Island (Japan) are discussed and compared with corresponding measurements at Gosan (South Korea), and Hok Tsui (China). In conjunction with back trajectory analysis, Sado radon data are used to characterise the seasonal variability in fetch regions of air masses subject to extremes of terrestrial influence. In winter, fetch regions of air masses that have experienced the greatest terrestrial influence covered southern Siberia; in summer, the terrestrial fetch was dominated by Japan; throughout the remaining months the terrestrial fetch encompassed the Korean Peninsula and far eastern China. Summer radon data are then used to estimate the radon flux from central Honshu (23.5 mBq m?2 s?1), which varied regionally between 10.6 and 47.9 mBq m?2 s?1. The Sado radon record reported here completes a 4-site, multi-year dataset of hourly radon concentrations across East Asia and the central Pacific (spanning 16° of latitude), which constitutes a unique evaluation tool for transport and mixing schemes of atmospheric and chemical transport models.  相似文献

A few copper and gold smelters in Chile are behind a large fraction of global arsenic emissions, raising concerns for increased concentrations of arsenic in PM10 in Central and Northern Chile. This concern is amplified by the fact that Northern Chile soils and rivers in general are characterized by a high arsenic content. A monitoring and modeling study has been performed to quantify the regional impact of the smelter emissions. Measured atmospheric arsenic concentrations from 2.4 to 30.7 ng m−3 were found at seven rural stations, located tens to hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest smelter. Analyses of topsoil and subsoil samples taken from PM10 monitoring stations revealed levels up to 291 mg kg−1, the highest values found in the northern Atacama desert in Chile. An absolute principal component analysis of selected trace elements in PM10 shows that the regional impact of anthropogenic smelter emissions on airborne arsenic concentrations is more important than the effect of soil dust resuspension. The dominance of the smelter emissions is larger in Central Chile than in the northern parts. The impact of resuspended soil dust on airborne arsenic levels in rural areas was estimated not to exceed 5 ng m−3. The model calculations support the dominant role of anthropogenic emissions and give spatial and temporal variations in atmospheric concentrations consistent with the monitored levels at five of the seven stations. At two of the northernmost stations indications were found of unidentified sources other than the smelters and the resuspended soil dust, contributing to about 5 ng m−3 of total arsenic levels. The study confirms that a strong control or elimination of arsenic emissions from the smelters would lead to arsenic in PM10 levels in Northern and Central Chile comparable to non-polluted areas in other countries.  相似文献

We have developed a modelling system for predicting the traffic volumes, emissions from stationary and vehicular sources, and atmospheric dispersion of pollution in an urban area. This paper describes a comparison of the NOx and NO2 concentrations predicted using this modelling system with the results of an urban air quality monitoring network. We performed a statistical analysis to determine the agreement between predicted and measured hourly time series of concentrations at four permanently located and three mobile monitoring stations in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in 1996–1997 (at a total of ten urban and suburban measurement locations). At the stations considered, the so-called index of agreement values of the predicted and measured time series of the NO2 concentrations vary between 0.65 and 0.82, while the fractional bias values range from −0.29 to +0.26. In comparison with corresponding results presented in the literature, the agreement between the measured and predicted datasets is good, as indicated by these statistical parameters. The seasonal variations of the NO2 concentrations were analysed in terms of the relevant meteorological parameters. We also analysed the difference between model predictions and measured data diagnostically, in terms of meteorological parameters, including wind speed and direction (the latter separately for two wind speed classes), atmospheric stability and ambient temperature, at two monitoring stations in central Helsinki. The modelling system tends to overpredict the measured NO2 concentrations both at the highest (u⩾6 m s−1) and at the lowest wind speeds (u<2 m s−1). For higher wind speeds, the modelling system overpredicts the measured NO2 concentrations in certain wind direction intervals; specific ranges were found for both monitoring stations considered. The modelling system tends to underpredict the measured concentrations in convective atmospheric conditions, and overpredict in stable conditions. The possible physico-chemical reasons for these differences are discussed.  相似文献

The activity of the natural radionuclide tracers 7Be and 210Pb has been determined in bulk aerosol samples collected over 2-day intervals for nearly five full years at Summit, Greenland. Year-round sampling was conducted in three campaigns; summer 1997 to summer 1998, summer 2000 to summer 2002, and summer 2003 to present. As in previous summer campaigns at Summit, and a year-round investigation at Dye 3, variations in the activities of the tracers on short time scales were strongly correlated despite the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere source of 7Be and the continental surface source of 222Rn (precursor of 210Pb). This behavior is attributed to boundary layer dynamics exerting the dominant control on activities in air just above the ice sheet. Aerosols and associated species are depleted from the boundary layer above the snow when a strong inversion limits exchange with the free troposphere. Episodic weakening of the inversion allows ventilation of the boundary layer. This cycle drives simultaneous decreases and increases in the radionuclide tracers. The correlation between 7Be and 210Pb on seasonal and annual bases was found to be stronger than at Dye 3, and the average activity of 7Be was lower at Summit despite the higher elevation (3.0 versus 2.5 km). These observations indicate that the boundary layer at Summit is more effectively isolated than at Dye 3. The activity of 7Be at Summit peaked in June or July all 5 years, closely following the seasonality of stratospheric injection of 7Be into the Arctic troposphere (based on seasonality of the 10Be/7Be ratio previously measured at Alert, NWT). This suggests that when the boundary layer at Summit is replenished by ventilation, it receives air reflecting the composition of the mid and upper troposphere.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the possible effects of heatwave phenomena on background O3 concentrations, the average summer O3 concentrations at the high mountain station of Mt. Cimone (MTC—2165 m a.s.l.) have been analyzed. In particular, at this baseline station unusually high O3 concentrations were recorded during August 2003, when an intense heatwave (the “August heatwave”) affected Europe. During this heatwave, the highest O3 concentrations were recorded at MTC in connection with air masses coming from continental Europe and the Po basin boundary layer as shown by three-dimensional air mass back-trajectory and mixing height analyzes. However, high O3 concentrations were also recorded in air masses coming from the middle troposphere (above 3000 m a.s.l.), thus suggesting the presence of O3-rich atmospheric layers over Europe. This could be due to the large extension of the mixing layer which favoured the transport of high concentrations of O3 and its precursors to altitudes that would usually be in the free troposphere. Other than from traffic and industrial activities, a contribution to the high O3 concentrations recorded at MTC during the August heatwave could derive from fires in the North of Italy, as suggested by a well-documented episode and supported by in situ CO2 measurements used as non-conventional tracer for fire emissions.  相似文献

Improvements in measurement technology are permitting development of a more detailed scientific understanding of the cycling of mercury in the global atmospheric environment. Critical to advancing the state of knowledge is the acquisition of accurate measurement of speciated mercury (gaseous and particulate) at ground research stations in a variety of settings located around the globe. This paper describes one such research effort conducted at TVA's Look Rock air quality monitoring site in Tennessee—a mountain top site (813 m elevation) just west of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the largest National Park in the eastern US and it receives environmental protection under a variety of US statutes. Gaseous and particle mercury species along with some additional trace gases were measured at Look Rock during two field studies totaling 84 days in the spring and summer of 2004. Average results for the entire sampling period are: gaseous elemental mercury Hg(0): 1.65 ng m−3, reactive gaseous mercury RGM: 0.005 ng m−3, particulate mercury Hg(p): 0.007 ng m−3. Literature review indicates that these levels are within the range found for other rural/remote sites in North America and worldwide. Reactive and particulate mercury comprised together less than 1%, on average, of total airborne mercury at Look Rock. When compared to the global background mercury literature, the Look Rock measurements demonstrate that the atmospheric mercury levels in the vicinity of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are clearly dominated by the global atmospheric pool, not by local or regional sources.  相似文献

Ultra-fine particle number concentrations were measured over Siberia during two large-scale airborne measurement campaigns in April and September 2006. During both campaigns, an aircraft flew between Novosibirsk and Yakutsk, collecting every 200 km vertical profiles up to 7 km. This dataset was completed by 5 years of monthly profiles above Novosibirsk. Particle number concentration was measured in the size ranges 3–70 and 70–200 nm, along with other tracers. Free troposphere (FT) particle concentrations (N3–200) varied between 60 and 460 cm?3, inferior to boundary layer concentrations (100–7000 cm?3). In April, high concentrations of ~500 cm?3 were observed in a polluted air mass recently uplifted at 5–6 km altitude over eastern Siberia, with no sign of significant new particle formation. In September, particle concentrations decreased with altitude, but with a steeper gradient in N70–200 compared to N3–70, the latter accounting for 90% of the total particle concentration in the free troposphere at 6–7 km altitude. Because ultra-fine particles presumably have short lifetimes, these observed particles could have been formed in situ in the clean Siberian atmosphere. Two cases of possible nucleation with high concentration and N3–70/N70–200 ratios are reported for the September campaign, in the upper troposphere and in cloud outflow in the mid-troposphere. In the seasonal analysis, a FT N3–70 maximum is found in July–August between 6 and 7 km altitude, with N3–70 accounting for ~90% of N3–200 supporting the hypothesis of in situ formation in the FT. A secondary FT maximum of N3–70 was identified later in autumn. In the boundary layer, seasonally maximum N3–70 concentrations were found over Novosibirsk in May and September, but not in summer, possibly due to scavenging by precipitations and a large condensational sink from biomass burning aerosols. Our dataset has a limited size resolution and no speciation capability; more investigation is thus required to understand the conditions leading to in situ nucleation processes in the Siberian air shed.  相似文献

Causes for the unusually high and seasonally anomalous ozone concentrations at Summit, Greenland were investigated. Surface data from continuous monitoring, ozone sonde data, tethered balloon vertical profiling data, correlation of ozone with the radionuclide tracers 7Be and 210Pb, and synoptic transport analysis were used to identify processes that contribute to sources and sinks of ozone at Summit. Northern Hemisphere (NH) lower free troposphere ozone mixing ratios in the polar regions are ∼20 ppbv higher than in Antarctica. Ozone at Summit, which is at 3212 m above sea level, reflects its altitude location in the lower free troposphere. Transport events that bring high ozone and dry air, likely from lower stratospheric/higher tropospheric origin, were observed ∼40% of time during June 2000. Comparison of ozone enhancements with radionuclide tracer records shows a year-round correlation of ozone with the stratospheric tracer 7Be. Summit lacks the episodic, sunrise ozone depletion events, which were found to reduce the annual, median ozone at NH coastal sites by up to ∼3 ppbv. Synoptic trajectory analyses indicated that, under selected conditions, Summit encounters polluted continental air with increased ozone from central and western Europe. Low ozone surface deposition fluxes over long distances upwind of Summit reduce ozone deposition losses in comparison to other NH sites, particularly during the summer months. Surface-layer photochemical ozone production does not appear to have a noticeable influence on Summit's ozone levels.  相似文献

Even though dry deposition and air–water exchange of semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) are important for surfaces in and around the urban areas, there is still no generally accepted direct measurement technique for dry deposition. In this study, a modified water surface sampler (WSS) configuration, including a filter holder and an XAD-2 resin column, was employed to investigate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) dry deposition in an urban area. The measured total (particle+dissolved) PAH fluxes to the WSS averaged to be 34 960±16 540 ng m−2 d−1. Average particulate PAH flux, determined by analyzing the filter in the WSS, was about 8% of the total PAH flux. Temporal flux variations indicated that colder months (October–April) had the highest PAH fluxes. This increase could be attributed to the residential heating as well as meteorological effects including lower mixing height. A high volume air sampler was concurrently employed to collect ambient air concentrations. The average total (gas+particle) atmospheric PAH concentration (456±524 ng m−3) was within the range of previously measured values at different urban locations. PAH concentrations in urban areas are more than two orders of magnitude higher than those measured in pristine areas and this result may indicate that urban areas have major source sectors and greater deposition rates are expected near to these areas. The average contribution of particle phase was about 10% in total concentration. Simultaneous particulate phase dry deposition and ambient air samples were collected in this study. Then, particulate phase apparent dry deposition velocities were calculated using the fluxes and concentrations for each PAH compound and they ranged from 0.1 to 1.2 cm s−1. These values are in good agreement with previously reported values.  相似文献

The role of vertical atmospheric transport (VAT) for a winter ozone episode (January 1988) in the Alps, observed both on the mountain crest (3580 m asl) and in the lee of the Alps (209 m asl), is investigated. Numerical simulations were carried out with a doubly nested mesoscale model (14 km horizontal resolution), characterised by a refined orography scheme. A comparison between the modelled vertical profiles with features observed in the aerological soundings over Payerne indicated that the model is able to reproduce the fold in the Alps down to 650 hPa. Frictional processes are found to be responsible for the fragmentation of the lower parts of the fold when it is advected over the mountains, thus enhancing ozone concentrations at the mountain crest with likely cross-tropopause mixing. Vertically propagating gravity waves and strong mesoscale vertical winds (nordfoehn) are responsible for the further downward transport of ozone-rich air to the lower troposphere. This mechanism leads to ozone concentrations up to 70 ppb(v) in the leeside. The study is important because tropospheric ozone trends in the lee of the Alps have been inferred, in the past, from ozone peaks associated with such nordfoehn conditions. It is now shown that nordfoehn may entrain air which has been recently exchanged across the tropopause.  相似文献

Sonic anemometer turbulence measurements were made at Summit, Greenland during summer 2004 and spring 2005. These measurements allow for the characterization of the variability of the atmospheric boundary layer at this site by describing seasonal and diurnal changes in sensible heat flux and boundary layer stability as well as providing estimates of mixing layer height. Diurnal sensible heat fluxes at Summit ranged from −18 to −2 W m−2 in the spring and from −7 to +10 W m−2 in the summer. Sustained stable surface layer conditions and low wind speeds occured during the spring but not during the summer months. Unstable conditions were not observed at Summit until late April. Diurnal cycles of convective conditions during the daytime (0700–1700 h local time) were observed throughout July and August. Boundary layer heights, which were estimated for neutral to stable conditions, averaged 156 m for the spring 2005 observations. Comparisons of the boundary layer characteristics of Summit with those from South Pole, Antarctica, provide possible explanations for the significant differences in snowpack and surface-layer chemistry between the two sites.  相似文献

Micrometeorological measurements and ambient air samples, analyzed for concentrations of NH3, HNO3, NH4+, and NO3, were collected at an alpine tundra site on Niwot Ridge, Colorado. The measured concentrations were extremely low and ranged between 5 and 70 ng N m−3. Dry deposition fluxes of these atmospheric species were calculated using the micrometeorological gradient method. The calculated mean flux for NH3 indicates a net deposition to the surface and indicates that NH3 contributed significantly to the total N deposition to the tundra during the August–September measurement period. Our pre-measurement estimate of the compensation point for NH3 in air above the tundra was 100–200 ng N m−3; thus, a net emission of NH3 was expected given the low ambient concentrations of NH3 observed. Based on our results, however, the NH3 compensation point at this alpine tundra site appears to have been at or below about 20 ng N m−3. Large deposition velocities (>2 cm s−1) were determined for nitrate and ammonium and may result from reactions with surface-derived aerosols.  相似文献

To better understand the current physical and chemical properties of East Asian aerosols, an intensive observation of atmospheric particles was conducted at Gosan site, Jeju Island, South Korea during 2005 spring. Total suspended particle (TSP) samples were collected using pre-combusted quartz filters and a high-volume air sampler with the time intervals ranging from 3 h to 48 h. The kinds and amount of various organic compounds were measured in the samples using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Among the 99 target compounds detected, saccharides (average, 130 ± 14 ng m?3), fatty acids (73 ± 7 ng m?3), alcohols (41 ± 4 ng m?3), n-alkanes (32 ± 3 ng m?3), and phthalates (21 ± 2 ng m?3) were found to be major compound classes with polyols/polyacids, lignin and resin products, PAHs, sterols and aromatic acids being minor. Compared to the previous results reported for 2001 late spring samples, no significant changes were found in the levels of their concentrations and compositions for 4 years, although the economy in East Asia, especially in China, has sharply expanded from 2001 to 2005. During the campaign at Gosan site, we encountered two distinct dust storm episodes with high TSP concentrations. The first dust event occurred on March 28, which was characterized by a predominance of secondary organic aerosols. The second event that occurred on the next day (March 29) was found to be characterized by primary organic aerosols associated with forest fires in Siberia/northeastern China. A significant variation in the molecular compositions, which was found within a day, suggests that the compositions of East Asian aerosols are heterogeneous due to multi-contributions from different source regions together with different pathways of long-range atmospheric transport of particles.  相似文献

Atmospheric Hg transfer to the forest soil through litterfall was investigated in a primary rainforest at Ilha Grande (Southeast Brazil) from January to December 1997. Litter mass deposition reached 10.0 t ha−1 y−1, with leaves composing 50–84% of the total litter mass. Concentrations of Hg in the total fallen litter varied from 20 to 244 ng g−1, with higher concentrations during the dry season, between June and August (225 ± 17 ng g−1), and lower concentrations during the rainy season (99 ± 54 ng g−1). This seasonal variability was reflected in the Hg flux through litterfall, which corresponded to a Hg input to the forest floor of 122 μg m−2 y−1, with average Hg deposition of 16.5 ± 1.5 μg m−2 month−1 during and just after the dry season (June–September) and 7.0 ± 3.6 μg m−2 month−1 in the rest of the year. The variability in meteorological conditions (determining atmospheric Hg availability to foliar scavenging) may explain the pulsed pattern of Hg deposition, since litterfall temporal variability was generally unrelated with such deposition, except by a peak in litterfall production in September. Comparisons with regional data on Hg atmospheric deposition show that litterfall promotes Hg deposition at Ilha Grande two to three orders of magnitude higher than open rainfall deposition in non-industrialized areas and approximately two times higher than open rainfall deposition in industrialized areas in Rio de Janeiro State. The observed input suggests that atmospheric Hg transfer through litterfall may explain a larger fraction of the total Hg input to forest soils in Southeast Brazil than those recorded at higher latitudes.  相似文献

A new technique using ground-based FTIR spectroscopy has been developed to investigate the vertical distribution of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere. Complementary measurements of atmospheric emission and solar absorption over the infrared region have been carried out sequentially to determine the amounts of carbon monoxide in the lower and upper atmosphere. The method is based on the fact that the two techniques of remote sensing are inherently sensitive to the carbon monoxide amount in different regions of the atmosphere. The measurements have been made under summertime conditions at a northern mid-latitude rural setting with a relatively pollution-free atmosphere. The total zenith column amount was determined to be 1.84×1018 molecules cm-2±7% which was based on the solar absorption measurement. From the analysis of the thermal emission spectrum, which is sensitive to carbon monoxide only in the lower troposphere, a zenith column amount of 1.01×1018 molecules cm-2±10% was estimated for the first 4.8 km of the atmosphere; this corresponded to an average carbon monoxide mixing ratio of 118 ppbv. Comparing the results of the two measurements indicated that a zenith column amount 8.3×1017 molecules cm-2±20%, or an average mixing ratio of 66 ppbv, was present in the free troposphere above an altitude of 4.8 km. These results are consistent with those reported for other northern mid-latitude locations using various in situ and solar absorption measuring techniques.  相似文献

From 1 May to 25 May 2001, the BAB II campaign was carried out at the motorway BAB (656) near Heidelberg. Atmospheric concentrations of particulate matter and gases were measured together with the meteorological conditions. This paper is focused on the particulate matter measured upwind and downwind from the motorway at ground level. In order to determine the source contribution from the motorway traffic, it was necessary to measure upwind and downwind simultaneously due to variations in background concentrations. The particle number contribution from the motorway was found to be 35,000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 20 nm and 5000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 70 nm. Bimodal size distributions were observed on the downwind side, whereas the upwind side showed unimodal size distributions. For particulate mass, it can be estimated that the contribution from the motorway to the PM1 concentrations is in a range 0.6–1.3 μg m−3 for the chosen measurement sites approximately 60 m from the road at a height of 6 m. The soot measurements showed diurnal variation; however, the upwind downwind difference was not measured. Correlation factors showed good correlation between total particle number and number of particles with diameters below 80 nm, CO and NO. There was no correlation between particle number and PM10, which is due to the observation that particle number was dominated by the 20 nm particles.  相似文献

Atmospheric aerosol particulate matter was directly collected in the free troposphere over the Japan Sea coast between 1992 and 1994 using an aircraft-borne nine-stage cascade impactor (particle size range: 0.1–8 μm). The water-soluble components in the aerosol particulate matter were analyzed by ion chromatography. Particulate sulfate and ammonium were detected in most of the samples and their size distributions showed noticeable peaks below the 1 μm particle size range. Water-soluble calcium (Ca2+) was detected in half of the samples; the size distribution showed that the maximum particle size was larger than 1 μm. Highly concentrated Ca2+ in larger particles was possibly due to transport of Kosa aerosols from the Asian continent in the free troposphere. The concentration of fine particulate sulfate and ammonium tended to increase whenever Ca2+ was detected, which suggests possible mixing of Kosa aerosols and non-Kosa aerosols during long-range transport of air masses containing Kosa particles.  相似文献
