For 41 days between 25 May 1996 and 27 March 1997, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and peroxypropionyl nitrate (PPN) have been measured by electron capture gas chromatography at Santa Rita near Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, where light-duty vehicles used either ethanol or a gasoline–MTBE blend. Daily maximum concentrations ranged from 0.19 to 6.67 ppb for PAN and 0.06 to 0.72 ppb for PPN. Linear regression of maximum PPN vs. maximum PAN yielded a slope of 0.105±0.004 (R2=0.974). Diurnal variations of ambient PAN often followed those of ozone with respect to time of day but not with respect to amplitude. This was reflected in the large relative standard deviations associated with the study-averaged PAN/ozone concentration ratio, 0.037±0.105 (ppb/ppb, n=789) and the maximum PAN/maximum ozone concentration ratio, 0.028±0.015 (ppb/ppb, range 0.005–0.078, n=41). On several days PAN accounted for large fractions of the total ambient NOx in the late morning and afternoon hours, e.g., PAN/NOx⩽0.58 and PAN/(NOx–NO) ⩽0.76 on 27 March 1997. The amount of PAN lost by thermal decomposition (TPAN) was comparable in magnitude to that present in ambient air. The ratios TPAN/(PAN+TPAN) were up to 0.53, 0.67 and 0.64 during the warm afternoons of 25, 26 and 27 March 1997, respectively. The highest calculated value of TPAN was 5.6 ppb on 27 March 1997. On that day the 24 h-averaged value of TPAN (1.01 ppb) was nearly the same as that of PAN (1.09 ppb). Using computer kinetic modeling (SAPRC 97 chemical mechanism) and sensitivity analysis of VOC incremental reactivity, we ranked VOC present in Porto Alegre ambient air for their importance as precursors to PAN and to PPN. Using as input data the averages of VOC concentrations measured in downtown Porto Alegre during the ca. 1 yr period March 1996–April 1997, we calculated that the most important precursors to PAN and PPN were the SAPRC 97 model species ARO2 (which includes the aromatics xylenes, trimethylbenzenes, ethyltoluenes, etc.), which accounted for ca. 17% of the total PAN and total PPN formation potentials. Overall, the results indicate a major role for aromatics and alkenes and a minor role for acetaldehyde and ethanol as precursors to peroxyacyl nitrates in the Porto Alegre urban area.  相似文献

During the continuous monitoring of atmospheric parameters at the station Cape Point (34°S, 18°E), a smoke plume originating from a controlled fire of 30-yr-old fynbos was observed on 6 May 1997. For this episode, which was associated with a nocturnal inversion and offshore airflow, atmospheric parameters (solar radiation and meteorological data) were considered and the levels of various trace gases compared with those measured at Cape Point in maritime air. Concentration maxima in the morning of 6 May for CO2, CO, CH4 and O3 amounted to 370.3 ppm, 491 ppb, 1730 ppb and 47 ppb, respectively, whilst the mixing ratios of several halocarbons (F-11, F-12, F-113, CCl4 and CH3CCl3) remained at background levels. In the case of CO, the maritime background level for this period was exceeded by a factor of 9.8. Differences in ozone levels of up to 5 ppb between air intakes at 4 and 30 m above the station (located at 230 m above sea level) indicated stratification of the air advected to Cape Point during the plume event. Aerosols within the smoke plume caused the signal of global solar radiation and UV–A to be attenuated from 52.4 to 13.0 mW cm−2 and from 2.3 to 1.3 mW cm−2, respectively, 5 h after the trace gases had reached their maxima. Emission ratios (ERs) calculated for CO and CH4 relative to CO2 mixing ratios amounted to 0.042 and 0.0040, respectively, representing one of the first results for fires involving fynbos. The CO ER is somewhat lower than those given in the literature for African savanna fires (average ER=0.048), whilst for CH4 the ER falls within the range of ERs reported for the flaming (0.0030) and smouldering phases (0.0055) of savanna fires. Non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) data obtained from a grab sample collected during the plume event were compared to background levels. The highest ERs (ΔNMHC/ΔCH4) have been obtained for the C2–C3 hydrocarbons (e.g. ethene at 229.3 ppt ppb−1), whilst the C4–C7 hydrocarbons were characterised by the lowest ERs (e.g. n-hexane at 1.0 and n-pentane at 0.8 ppt ppb−1).  相似文献

Atmospheric ammonia mixing ratios and the main inorganic ions NH4+, NO3 and SO42− of size-resolved particles in the range from 0.05 to 10 μm were measured at an urban site in Münster, Germany. High mixing ratios of ammonia with a median of 5.2 ppb and a maximum of 50 ppb were detected. The mass fraction of submicron particles was much higher during the day than at night. At night, a greater particle mass and an increased presence of particulate nitrate was measured. Recurring patterns of particle distribution were distinguished and their characteristics analysed. In half of the measurements, the accumulation mode was clearly dominating, which is an indication of aged aerosol. In some measurements, higher concentrations of fine particles were found indicating particle formation. In these cases, a smaller particle mass and about four times greater ratios of ammonia versus ammonium concentrations were observed. These data show that ammonia contributes considerably to the formation of secondary particulate material.  相似文献

Comparisons were made between the predictions of six photochemical air quality simulation models (PAQSMs) and three indicators of ozone response to emission reductions: the ratios of O3/NOz and O3/NOy and the extent of reaction. The values of the two indicator ratios and the extent of reaction were computed from the model-predicted mixing ratios of ozone and oxidized nitrogen species and were compared to the changes in peak 1 and 8 h ozone mixing ratios predicted by the PAQSMs. The ozone changes were determined from the ozone levels predicted for base-case emission levels and for reduced emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). For all simulations, the model-predicted responses of peak 1 and 8 h ozone mixing ratios to VOC or NOx emission reductions were correlated with the base-case extent of reaction and ratios of O3/NOz and O3/NOy. Peak ozone values increased following NOx control in 95% (median over all simulations) of the high-ozone (>80 ppbv hourly mixing ratio in the base-case) grid cells having mean afternoon O3/NOz ratios less than 5 : 1, O3/NOy less than 4 : 1, or extent less than 0.6. Peak ozone levels decreased in response to NOx reductions in 95% (median over all simulations) of the grid cells having peak hourly ozone mixing ratios greater than 80 ppbv and where mean afternoon O3/NOz exceeded 10 : 1, O3/NOy was greater than 8 : 1, or extent exceeded 0.8. Ozone responses varied in grid cells where O3/NOz was between 5 : 1 and 10 : 1, O3/NOy was between 4 : 1 and 8 : 1, or extent was between 0.6 and 0.8. The responses in such grid cells were affected by ozone responses in upwind grid cells and by the changes in ozone levels along the upwind boundaries of the modeling domains.  相似文献

The mixing ratios of surface ozone at two rural/remote sites in Thailand, Inthanon and Srinakarin, have been measured continuously for the first time. Almost identical seasonal variations of O3 with dry season maximum and a wet season minimum with a large seasonal amplitude are observed at both sites during 1996–1998. At Inthanon, the monthly averaged O3 mixing ratios range 9–55 ppb, with the annual average of 27 ppb. The ozone mixing ratios at Srinakarin are in the similar range, 9–45 ppb with annual average of 28 ppb. Based on trajectory analysis of O3 data at Inthanon, the long-range transport of O3 under Asian monsoon regime could primarily explain the low O3 mixing ratios of 13 ppb in clean marine air mass from Indian Ocean during wet season but only partly explain the relatively low O3 mixing ratios, 26 ppb or less, in continental air mass from northeast Asia either in wet or dry season. The highest O3 mixing ratios are found in air masses transported within southeast Asia, averaged 46 ppb in dry season. The high O3 mixing ratios during the dry season are suggested to be significantly due to the local/sub-regional scale O3 production triggered by biomass burning in southeast Asia rather than long-range transport effect.  相似文献

Canopy scale emissions of isoprene and monoterpenes from Amazonian rainforest were measured by eddy covariance and eddy accumulation techniques. The peak mixing ratios at about 10 m above the canopy occurred in the afternoon and were typically about 90 pptv of α-pinene and 4–5 ppbv of isoprene. α-pinene was the most abundant monoterpene in the air above the canopy comprising ≈50% of the total monoterpene mixing ratio. Measured isoprene fluxes were almost 10 times higher than α-pinene fluxes. Normalized conditions of 30°C and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 were associated with an isoprene flux of 2.4 mg m−2 h−1 and a β-pinene flux of 0.26 mg m−2 h−1. Both fluxes were lower than values that have been specified for Amazon rainforests in global emission models. Isoprene flux correlated with a light- and temperature-dependent emission activity factor, and even better with measured sensible heat flux. The variation in the measured α-pinene fluxes, as well as the diurnal cycle of mixing ratio, suggest emissions that are dependent on both light and temperature. The light and temperature dependence can have a significant effect on the modeled diurnal cycle of monoterpene emission as well as on the total monoterpene emission.  相似文献

During the course of one year (March 2004–March 2005), PM2.5 particulate nitrate concentrations were semi-continuously measured every 10 min at a Madrid suburban site using the Rupprecht and Patashnick Series 8400N Ambient Particulate Nitrate Monitor (8400N). Gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, O3, HCHO, HNO2) were simultaneously measured with a DOAS spectrometer (OPSIS AR-500) and complementary meteorological information was obtained by a permanent tower. The particulate nitrate concentrations ranged from the instrumental detection limit of around 0.2 μg m−3, up to a maximum of about 25 μg m−3. The minimum monthly average was reached during August (0.32 μg m−3) and the maximum during November (3.0 μg m−3). Due to the semi-volatile nature of ammonium nitrate, peaks were hardly present during summer air pollution episodes. A typical pattern during days with low dispersive conditions was characterized by a steep rise of particulate nitrate in the morning, reaching maximum values between 9 and 14 UTC, followed by a decrease during the evening. On some occasions a light increase was observed at nighttime. During spring episodes, brief diurnal nitrate peaks were recorded, while during the autumn and winter episodes, later and broader nitrate peaks were registered. Analysis of particulate nitrate and related gaseous species indicated the photo-chemical origin of the morning maxima, delayed with respect to NO and closely associated with secondary NO2 maximum values. The reverse evolution of nitrate and nitrous acid was observed after sunrise, suggesting a major contribution from HNO2 photolysis to OH formation at this time of the day, which would rapidly produce nitrate in both gaseous and particulate phase. Some nocturnal nitrate maxima appeared under high humidity conditions, and a discussion about their origin involving different possible mechanisms is presented, i.e. the possibility that these nocturnal maximum values could be related to the heterogeneous formation of nitrous and nitric acid by the hydrolysis of NO2 on wet aerosols.  相似文献

There is a growing concern that persistent organic pollutants like organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) can impair fetal growth and affect birth size. However, currently available epidemiological evidence is inconclusive. In this case-control study, we examined the association between exposure to hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and its isomers (α-HCH, β-HCH and γ-HCH), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and birth size. We recruited 60 infant-mother pairs, comprising of 30 term, small for gestational age babies with their mothers (Case group), and another 30 term, appropriate for gestational age babies with their mothers (Control group). This study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Delhi, India, between March, 2009 and February 2010. Organochlorine pesticides were estimated in maternal blood, cord blood, placenta and breastmilk samples, using gas–liquid chromatography. Transplacental and transmammary transfer of OCPs was assessed by correlating the maternal blood OCP levels with those in cord blood and breastmilk by simple linear regression. The birthweight, crown heel length, head circumference, mid-arm circumference and ponderal index of the neonates was correlated with OCP levels in the maternal blood, cord blood, placenta and breastmilk. The OCP estimates were compared between samples of the case and control group. There was a significant (P < 0.001) transplacental transfer of all OCPs, however the transmammary transfer was insignificant for most OCPs except α-HCH. The OCP levels in the case group were higher than the control group; these were significantly more for t-HCH in cord blood and breastmilk; β-HCH in maternal blood, cord blood and breastmilk; DDE in placenta and DDT in breastmilk. There was a significant negative correlation between birthweight and t-HCH levels in maternal blood (P = 0.022), cord blood (P < 0.001), placenta (P = 0.008) and breastmilk (P = 0.005); β-HCH in cord blood (P < 0.001) and placenta (P = 0.020); γ-HCH in placenta (P = 0.045); and DDT (P = 0.009). Length at birth had a significant negative correlation with t-HCH in cord blood (P = 0.014) and breastmilk (P < 0.001); β-HCH in cord blood (P = 0.016) and breastmilk (P = 0.012); DDE in placenta (P = 0.016); and DDT in breastmilk (P = 0.006). Similarly, OCP levels were also found to be negatively correlated with head circumference, ponderal index and chest circumference in neonates. We conclude that prenatal exposure to some OCPs could impair the anthropometric development of the fetus, reducing the birthweight, length, head circumference, chest circumference and ponderal index.  相似文献

Within 2 years of trace gas measurements performed at Arosa (Switzerland, 2030 m above sea level), enhanced ozone mixing ratios were observed during south foehn events during summer and spring (5–10 ppb above the median value). The enhancements can be traced back to ozone produced in the strongly industrialized Po basin as confirmed by various analyses. Backward trajectories clearly show advection from this region during foehn. NOy versus O3 correlation and comparison of O3 mixing ratios between Arosa and Mt. Cimone (Italy, 2165 m asl) suggest that ozone is the result of recent photochemical production (+5.6 ppb on average), either directly formed during the transport or via mixing of air processed in the Po basin boundary layer. The absence of a correlation between air parcel residence times over Europe and ozone mixing ratios at Arosa during foehn events is in contrast to a previous analysis, which suggested such correlation without reference to the origin of the air. In the case of south foehn, the continental scale influence of pollutants emission on ozone at Arosa appears to be far less important than the direct influence of the Po basin emissions. In contrast, winter time displays a different situation, with mean ozone reductions of about 4 ppb for air parcels passing the Po basin, probably caused by mixing with ozone-poor air from the Po basin boundary layer.  相似文献

Experiments were performed at Summit, Greenland (72°34′ N, 38°29′ W) to investigate hydroxyl mixing ratios in the sunlit surface snowpack (or firn). We added a carefully selected mixture of hydrocarbon gases (with a wide range of hydroxyl reactivities) to a UV and visible light transparent flow chamber containing undisturbed natural firn. The relative decrease in mixing ratios of these gases allowed estimation of the lower limit mixing ratio of hydroxyl radicals in the near-surface firn pore spaces. Hydroxyl mixing ratios in the firn air followed a diurnal cycle in summer 2003 (10–12 July), with peak values of more than 3.2×106 molecules cm−3 between 13:00 and 16:00 local time. The minimum value estimated was 1.1×106 molecules cm−3 at 20:00 local time. Results during spring of 2004 showed lower, but rapidly increasing, peak hydroxyl mixing ratios of 1.1×106 molecules cm−3 in the early afternoon on 15 April and 1.5×106 molecules cm−3 on 1 May. Our firn hydroxyl estimates were similar to directly measured above-snow ambient levels during the spring field season, but were only about 30% of ambient levels during summer.  相似文献

The kinetics and mechanism for degradation of omethoate (OMT) by catalytic ozonation with Fe(III)-loaded activated carbon (Fe@AC) were investigated in this study with focus on identification of degradation byproducts. The rate constants of OMT reacting with ozone and hydroxyl radical (OH) were determined to be 0.04 and 5.3 × 108 M?1 s?1 at pH 7.5 and 20 °C, respectively. OMT was predominantly degraded by OH in the catalytic ozonation with Fe@AC. The high-molecular-weight degradation byproducts identified were O,O,O-trimethyl phosphoric ester (TMP), pyrrolidin-2-one, N-methyl-2-sulfanylacetamide, 2-(methylthio)acetamide, O,O,S-trimethylthiophosphate (STMP), and N-methyl-2-(methylthio)acetamide. Besides, low-molecular-weight organic acids and inorganic anions were also detected and quantified, including formic, acetic and oxalic acids as well as nitrate, sulfate and phosphate ions. In the catalytic ozonation, TMP and phosphate were two major P-containing byproducts resulting from OMT degradation. The toxicity of OMT solution gradually decreased during the catalytic ozonation, indicating that Fe@AC is a safe catalyst for OMT removal by ozone in water.  相似文献

We report the first measurements of the mixing ratios of acetic (CH3COOH) and formic (HCOOH) acids in the air filling the pore spaces of the snowpacks (firn air) at Summit, Greenland and South Pole. Both monocarboxylic acids were present at levels well above 1 ppbv throughout the upper 35 cm of the snowpack at Summit. Maximum mixing ratios in Summit firn air reached nearly 8 ppbv CH3COOH and 6 ppbv HCOOH. At South Pole the mixing ratios of these acids in the top 35 cm of firn air were also generally >1 ppbv, though their maximums barely exceeded 2.5 ppbv of CH3COOH and 2.0 ppbv of HCOOH. Mixing ratios of the monocarboxylic acids in firn air did not consistently respond to diel and experimental (fast) variations in light intensity, unlike the case for N oxides in the same experiments. Air-to-snow fluxes of CH3COOH and HCOOH apparently support high mixing ratios (means of (CH3COOH/HCOOH) 445/460 and 310/159 pptv at Summit and South Pole, respectively) in air just above the snow during the summer sampling seasons at these sites. We hypothesize that oxidation of carbonyls and alkenes (that are produced by photo- and OH-oxidation of ubiquitous organic compounds) within the snowpack is the source of the monocarboxylic acids.  相似文献

The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead in 149 muscle samples of eight freshwater fish species (European eel, bream, common carp, European catfish, roach, perch, pike and pikeperch) from five different French fishing areas from contaminated and control sites were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after microwave digestion under pressure. No significant correlation was found between the condition factor (CF), based on the length–mass relationship, and As, Cd and Pb levels in all the samples analysed, but a positive correlation was detected between CF and Hg levels (P < 0.0001, R = 0.49). Positive correlations with body length were only found for Hg in roach (P < 0.05, R = 0.32) and Pb in bream (P < 0.05, R = 0.48) and correlations with both body weight and length were also found for Hg in pike (P < 0.05, R = 0.90 and 0.86) and Cd in European eel (P < 0.01, R = ?0.35 and ?0.37). The average content and the standard deviation in fish muscle samples was 0.007 ± 0.012, 0.102 ± 0.077, 0.142 ± 0.097 and 0.035 ± 0.053 mg kg?1 of wet mass for Cd, As, Hg and Pb, respectively. Significant differences were established between groups of predatory fish and non-predatory fish for Hg and Pb, and between control and contaminated sites in the whole selection and also within feeding guilds, i.e. the values of Hg in the benthophagic fish were significantly different between these sites. Finally, these results were also compared for each species with previous French and European studies.  相似文献

Diurnal variations on a time scale of minutes of the mixing ratios of methanol were measured using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) technique during 67 days throughout the time span from November 1996 to July 1998 together with benzene and other volatile organic compounds at the western outskirts of Innsbruck, Austria. Comparison with the course of the mixing ratio of benzene, which served as marker for traffic emissions, as well as the observation of a seasonal variation allowed to distinguish between different sources for methanol release into the troposphere. Strong evidence for methanol removal via deposition on dew-wetted surfaces is obtained from the comparison of meteorological data with methanol mixing ratios. The mean volume mixing ratio of total methanol was 7.5 nmol mol−1. Mixing ratios ranged from 0.03 up to 45 nmol mol−1.  相似文献

Biomass consumption and CO2, CO and hydrocarbon gas emissions in an Amazonian forest clearing fire are presented and discussed. The experiment was conducted in the arc of deforestation, near the city of Alta Floresta, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The average carbon content of dry biomass was 48% and the estimated average moisture content of fresh biomass was 42% on wet weight basis. The fresh biomass and the amount of carbon on the ground before burning were estimated as 528 t ha?1 and 147 t ha?1, respectively. The overall biomass consumption for the experiment was estimated as 23.9%. A series of experiment in the same region resulted in average efficiency of 40% for areas of same size and 50% for larger areas. The lower efficiency obtained in the burn reported here occurred possibly due to rain before the experiment. Excess mixing ratios were measured for CO2, CO, CH4, C2–C3 aliphatic hydrocarbons, and PM2.5. Excess mixing ratios of CH4 and C2–C3 hydrocarbons were linearly correlated with those of CO. The average emission factors of CO2, CO, CH4, NMHC, and PM2.5 were 1,599, 111.3, 9.2, 5.6, and 4.8 g kg?1 of burned dry biomass, respectively. One hectare of burned forest released about 117,000 kg of CO2, 8100 kg of CO, 675 kg of CH4, 407 kg of NMHC and 354 kg of PM2.5.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to develop a statistical model to predict one day in advance both the maximum and 8 h (10 am–5 pm) average ozone for Houston (TX). A loess/generalized additive model (GAM) approach was taken to model development. Ozone data (1983–1991) from ten stations in the immediate Houston area were used in the study. The meteorological data came from the Houston International Airport. The models were developed using data for April through October for 1983–1987 and 1989–1990. Forecasts were developed for 1988 and 1991. The final model, which was multiplicative in nature, contained three interaction terms for the west/east and south/north wind components (average of hourly values from 8 pm to 5 am, 6 am to 9 am, and 10 am to 5 pm). Opaque cloud cover (averaged over the period 10  am to 5 pm), yesterday’s maximum ozone, today’s maximum temperature and morning mixing depth were also important variables in the model.Individual forecasts were generated for all ten stations in the Houston area using observed meteorology. In addition forecasts were produced for three measures of the network as a whole. The root-mean-square prediction error for the 8 h average forecasts ranged from 13.2 to 16.3 ppb (with R2 ranging from 0.66 to 0.73) for the individual stations and from 18.5 to 22.0 ppb (with R2 ranging from 0.61 to 0.68) for maximum ozone. A detailed examination was undertaken for a day on which the forecast was much too low.  相似文献

Chemical actinometry was used to measure nitrate photolysis rate coefficients, JNO3, on and in snowpack at Summit, Greenland. Sealed glass tubes containing nitrate and a hydroxyl radical trapping system were buried in snow and exposed for between 2 and 24 h. Average JNO3 values for 2-h midday exposures in early June on surface snow were 10–14×10−7 s−1. Averages over 24 h were 3.5–4.5×10−7 s−1. These values reflect the integrated photon flux and also any variation of the nitrate photolysis rate with temperature. Attenuation of JNO3 within the firn was 0.03–0.04 cm−1 for 24-h exposures and 0.08 cm−1 for a 2-h exposure. Different attenuation coefficients may relate to differential light penetration due to changes in sun angle over the course of 24 h.  相似文献

An instrument was developed for semi-continuous measurement of the size-distribution of submicron nitrate, ammonium, sulphate and chloride. Novel in the instrumentation is the size-classification, which is realised with a pre-separator that consists of a set of four parallel impactors. The cut-off diameters of the impactors are at 0.18, 0.32, 0.56 and 1.0 μm. Aerosols smaller than the associated cut-off size pass the respective impactor and arrive in the detector. The manifold with impactors contains two additional lines, one open line and one containing a filter that removes all aerosols. This latter line provides an on-line field-blank. The sample air-flow is automatically switched by wide-bore ball valves to one of the six sampling lines for a period of 20 min; a measuring cycle thus takes 2 h.Down-stream of the pre-separator the sampling and automated on-line analysis of the transmitted aerosol is accomplished with a “MARGA”. In this instrument steam condensation is used to grow the aerosol. The droplets formed are collected in a cyclone that drains to wet-chemical analysis systems. A wet-denuder between pre-separator and collector removes interfering gases, like nitric acid and ammonia. This enables artefact-free and thus representative semi-continuous measurement of the size-distribution of the semi-volatile (ammonium) nitrate. The novel MARGA-sizer was first used in a 1 week field-test. After modifications it was then deployed in a monitoring campaign of 2 months in the summer of 2002, at the top level of the meteo-tower of Cabauw in the centre of the Netherlands. The high location, 200 m, was chosen to obtain data on ammonium nitrate that are minimally affected by surface emissions of ammonia. The data coverage over the period was over 60%; failure of the instrumentation was mainly associated with spells of extreme solar heating of the tower and associated high temperatures inside. The average concentration of nitrate was 2.6 μg m−3, which was very similar to the value interpolated from data in the national network. The mass concentration of submicron nitrate was 2.0 μg m−3, of which 46% was in particles smaller than 0.32 μm. To put this in perspective: the concentration of submicron sulphate was similar to that of nitrate, while 53% was in particles smaller than 0.32 μm. The ion balance showed that the compounds were present as the fully neutralised salts. Quite large diurnal variations were observed for nitrate, with a surprising maximum in the afternoon. The size-distribution of the semi-volatile nitrate was rather constant over a daily cycle.  相似文献

A kinetic mechanism to predict secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the photo-oxidation of toluene was developed. Aerosol phase chemistry that includes nucleation, gas–particle partitioning and particle-phase reactions as well as the gas-phase chemistry of toluene and its degradation products were represented. The mechanism was evaluated against experimental data obtained from the University of North Carolina (UNC) 270 m3 dual outdoor aerosol smog chamber facility. The model adequately simulates the decay of toluene, the nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) conversion and ozone formation. It also provides a reasonable prediction of SOA production under different conditions that range from 15 to 300 μg m−3. Speciation of simulated aerosol material shows that up to 70% of the aerosol mass comes from oligomers and polymers depending on initial reactant concentrations. The dominant particle-phase species predicted by the mechanism are glyoxal oligomers, ketene oligomers from the photolysis of the toluene OH reaction product 2-methyl-2,4-hexadienedial, organic nitrates, methyl nitro-phenol analogues, C7 organic peroxides, acylperoxy nitrates and for the low-concentration experiments, unsaturated hydroxy nitro acids.  相似文献

Hourly measurements of baseline ozone at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ireland are observed when unpolluted air masses are advected to the station from across the North Atlantic Ocean. Monthly mean ozone mixing ratios in baseline air masses have risen steadily during the 1980s and 1990s reaching unprecedented levels during the early months of 1999. During the 2000s, baseline ozone mixing ratios have shown evidence of decline and stabilisation. Over the entire 20-year 1987–2007 period, the trend in annual baseline ozone has been +0.31±0.12(2−σ) ppb year−1 and is highly statistically significant. Trends have been highest in the spring months and lowest in the summer months, producing a significant increase in the amplitude of the seasonal cycle. Over the shorter 1995–2007 period, we demonstrate how the growth to peak in 1999 and the subsequent decline have been driven by boreal biomass burning events during 1998/1999 and 2002/2003. The 2000s have been characterised by relatively constant baseline ozone and CH4 levels and these may be a reasonable guide to future prospects, at least in the short term.  相似文献
