Summary. Two Ceratosoma species, C. trilobatum and C. gracillimum (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Opistobranchia), collected along the South China Sea coast, have been studied in order to investigate their defensive strategies. Both species contain four typical sponge furanosesquiterpenoids, probably with a dietary origin. The tissue distribution of these compounds has been studied by 1H-NMR analysis and preliminary bioassays have been carried out in order to evaluate the ecological role of the isolated metabolites. The main sesquiterpene component in both species was (–)-furodysinin (2), which showed significant feeding-deterrent and ichthyotoxic properties in bioassays with freshwater organisms. The work has been performed studying a very limited number of molluscs that prevented the realization of ecologically relevant experiments. However, the almost exclusive presence of compound 2 in the crude extract of the mantle glands concentrated in the dorsal horn of C. gracillimum strongly supports the defensive role of that dorsal protuberance, which probably acts as a defensive lure attracting potential predators to the part of the animal that contains the distasteful chemicals. 相似文献

In this article, the mathematical assumptions of a number of commonly used ecological regression models are made explicit, critically assessed, and related to ecological bias. In particular, the role and interpretation of random effects models are examined. The modeling of spatial variability is considered and related to an underlying continuous spatial field. The examination of such a field with respect to the modeling of risk in relation to a point source highlights an inconsistency in commonly used approaches. A theme of the paper is to examine how plausible individual-level models relate to those used in practice at the aggregate level. The individual-level models acknowledge confounding, within-area variability in exposures and confounders, measurement error and data anomalies and so we can examine how the area-level versions consider these aspects. We briefly discuss designs that efficiently sample individual data and would appear to be useful in environmental settings. 相似文献

Summary. An evolutionary scenario incorporating recent advances in phylogenetic research begins with an opisthobranch-pulmonate common
ancestor that was herbivorous and had some diet-derived chemical defense. The Nudibranchia and their closest relatives, the
Notaspidea, form a lineage the ancestors of which had switched to feeding upon sponges and deriving protection from metabolites
contained in them. Subsequently there have been repeated shifts in food and defensive metabolites, and trends are evident
in the ability to detoxify, sequester and utilize metabolites from food, as well as to synthesize defensive compounds de novo. The Notaspidea display a minor adaptive radiation that foreshadows a more extensive one in the various lineages of nudibranchs.
This review emphasizes changes that have occurred within the Holohepatica, or dorid nudibranchs (order Doridacea). Their sister-group,
the Cladohepatica, consists of three other orders, Dendronotacea, Arminacea, and Aeolidiacea, in which there has been a shift
from sponges to Cnidaria as food. The Dendronotacea often feed upon Octocorallia, which combine spicules, chemical defense,
and stinging capsules and thereby suggest a transition from feeding on sponges. A previous diet of Octocorallia is suggested
by the defensive use of prostaglandins in the dendronotacean Tethys fimbria, which eats crustaceans. A shift to bryozoans in some Arminacea is accompanied by use of different metabolites. Dorid nudibranchs
evidently began as sponge-feeders, but some lineages have shifted to a variety of other food organisms, and others have specialized
in the kind of sponges they feed on and how they do it. There have been shifts to bryozoans (Ectoprocta) and ascidians (Chordata:
Urochordata) that track metabolites rather than the taxonomy of the food. There is a crude correlation between the genealogy
and the defensive metabolites of the sponge-feeding dorids. De novo synthesis is well documented in this order and the metabolites are appropriately positioned so as to have an adaptive effect.
The hypothesis that the capacity for de novo synthesis was acquired by gene transfer across lineages is rejected, partly on the basis of different chirality of metabolites
in the nudibranchs and their food organisms. Instead it is proposed that there has been a preadaptive phase followed by evolution
in a retrosynthetic mode, with selection favoring enzymes that enhance the yield of end products that are already present
in the food.

This study summarizes observations made on more than 140 species obtained in Southern Chile and on many others collected from the Juan Fernández Islands to the Antarctic Peninsula from 1962 to 1980. The total number of the Magellanic Bryozoa including the author's records and those of the literature reaches 195. These species are: 15 Ctenostomata (7.69%), 46 Cyclostomata (23.59%) and 134 Cheilostomata (68.72%). Seven species are described as new: Arachnopusia admiranda sp. nov., Celleporella chiloensis sp. nov., Electra pilosissima sp. nov., Hippoporina chilota sp. nov., Parasmittina pluriavicularis sp. nov., Smittina ectoproctolitica sp. nov. and Smittina molarifera sp. nov. Typical characteristics of the Magellanic bryozoan fauna are: the Cyclostomata amount to 50% of all the subantarctic and antarctic species, with two endemic families Calvetiidae and Pseudidmoneidae; the Cheilostomata show a low endemism at the generic level compared to the antarctic group; the hippothoan fauna is very diversified with four species having tatiform ancestrulae. The zoarial diversity and the polymorphism of the Magellanic Bryozoa are qualitatively and quantitatively different from that of the Antarctic. Thus the encrusting species make up the main bulk of this bryozoan fauna with at least 110 spp. From a bryozoogeographical point of view the Magellanic Region comprises the following parts that could be considered as provinces: (a) Magellanic: including the southern tip of South America south to Lat. 40°S, plus the Patagonian Shelf and the Falkland Islands. (b) Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island. (c) Kerguelen and the nearby archipelagos in the Indian Sector of the Austral Ocean. 相似文献

Specimens of 21 species of dorid nudibranchs were collected off Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in 1984, and extracts were assayed against a variety of test organisms (bacteria, fungi, crustacean nauplii, a fish and a mammal). Antimicrobial activity was present in extracts of 80% of the 21 species assayed and in each of the five families investigated (Chromodorididae, Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae, Dorididae, and Dendrodorididae). This result adds the families Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae and Dendrodorididae to those with species known to possess such activity. Extracts of 18 of the 21 species possessed ichthyotoxins. This result adds the families Aegeridae, Dorididae and Dendrodorididae to those with species known to possess such activity. Further, extracts of 10 species (of 13 species tested) were toxic to mice and two of these 10 were toxic to Artemia sp. nauplii. 相似文献

Mantle surfaces of the dorid nudibranchs Rostanga arbutus and Jorunna sp. were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and two specialized structures are described. These are caryophyllidia and mantle rim organs; the latter being described for the first time. Caryophyllidia occur in large numbers (several thousand) uniformly distributed over the entire upper surface, while the mantle rim organs, numbering only 40 to 60, are restricted to the upper mantle margin. Caryophyllidia are minute (40 to 50 m diam), erect tubercles supported internally by 4 to 7, vertical, calcareous spicules which emerge in a crown surrounding an apical knob. Caryophyllidia display a high level of spicular organization and incorporate a complex muscle system at their base. The apical knob is formed from specialized epidermis capping a sub-epithelial ganglion. The highly organized structure of the caryophyllidium indicates its potential importance as a new character in dorid taxonomy and phylogeny. Analyses of two-state phenotypic change are common in ecological research. Some examples include phenotypic changes due to phenotypic plasticity between two environments, changes due to predator/non-predator character shifts, character displacement via competitive interactions, and patterns of sexual dimorphism. However, methods for analyzing phenotypic change for multivariate data have not been rigorously developed. Here we outline a method for testing vectors of phenotypic change in terms of two important attributes: the magnitude of change (vector length) and the direction of change described by trait covariation (angular difference between vectors). We describe a permutation procedure for testing these attributes, which allows non-targeted sources of variation to be held constant. We provide examples that illustrate the importance of considering vector attributes of phenotypic change in biological studies, and we demonstrate how greater inference can be made than by evaluating variance components with MANOVA alone. Finally, we consider how our method may be extended to more complex data. 相似文献

Onchidoris muricata (Müller) and Adalaria proxima (Alder and Hancock) are sympatric, potentially competing species of dorid nudibranchs, which preferentially graze the cheilostome polyzoan Electra pilosa (L.). O. muricata is small and lays small eggs which hatch as poorly-developed planktotrophic veliger larvae. A. proxima is larger and reproduces by means of larger eggs which hatch, as well-developed lecithotrophic larvae, that can metamorphose within approximately 24 h of release. A. proxima larvae can feed in the plankton, but do not require extrinsic nutrition to undergo complete development. Both species spawn in February–april, and have a strictly annual life-cycle. Comparisons of the calorific content of spawn have shown that A. proxima apportions a greater number of calories to reproduction, but that O. muricata makes a greater relative effort. A. proxima shown considerable individual variability in reproductive effort, which fails to correlate with, body size or rate of spawning. A more deterministic situation applies to O. muricata, because body size and fecundity follow an allometric relationship. It appears that there is a threshold of absolute energy required to support the lecithotrophic larval strategy in nudibranchs, and that this is not attained by the smaller species, O. muricata. A. proxima thus appears to have both reproductive strategies open to it, and to have adopted lecithotrophy in order to offset the unpredictability of energy available for reproduction.Communicated by J. India and Canada share a common heritage in natural resources management. Both have a colonial background, settlers and indigenous peoples; there is a history of management agencies with utilitarian attitudes, and a history of treating public lands as commodities for commerce rather than as resources for local livelihoods. This historical context guided the overall goal of this study, which was policy development for the sustainable use of mountain environments. Interviews, workshops and seminars were held with local people and resource management professionals in a comparative case study in two regions; the Kullu area in Himachal Pradesh, India and the Arrow Lakes area in British Columbia, Canada. The paper is organized around two main objectives of the work relating to the successes and failures of mountain environment resource management policies and the development of criteria for assessing and monitoring sustainability in mountain environments, in particular, criteria for examining relevant crosscultural dimensions of sustainable development in these environments. By way of conclusion the paper considers further ways in which traditional resource policy development and implementation is being challenged by changing values and priorities; ecosystems management with people; and co-management and public participation. 相似文献

Early spermatids of the dendrobranchiate shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846) have a spherical nucleus with large patches of heterochromatin, surrounded by a cytoplasmic mass that contains the conspicuous proacrosomal vesicle. The highly polarized mid spermatid mainly consists of the nuclear region, displaying a discontinuous nuclear envelope, and a large proacrosomal vesicle located at the opposite side of the cell. The most recent spermiogenic transformations primarily concern elongation of the proacrosomal vesicle to form a tapering spike. This results in the typically tack-shaped sperm of natantian decapods. The initial steps of spermiogenesis in the two studied dendrobranchiates prove to be parallel to reptant spermiogenesis in some respects, namely rupture of the nuclear envelope, chromatin decondensation and differentiation of electron-dense regions within the proacrosomal vesicle content. Specifically, whereas the anteriormost condensation gives rise to the operculum in brachyurans, in dendrobranchiates it becomes the apical portion of the spike. Despite an unquestionable morphological similarity between the sperm of carideans and dendrobranchiates, spermiogenesis in both groups displays meaningful differences. Spermatids of caridean shrimps lack a distinct proacrosomal vesicle. In the course of spermiogenesis, the spike arises from aggregated cytosolic materials; hence it is not membrane-bound. Unlike in other decapods, caridean sperm do not undergo a conventional acrosome reaction, since exocytotic events are not involved in this process. The above arguments suggest that, in the Decapoda, separation into three sperm classes is more suitable than the two traditionally accepted classes. The dendrobranchiate and reptant sperm types share a number of spermiogenic and functional features, while the caridean sperm type appears to represent an independent evolutive line with regard to sperm development and function. 相似文献

The paper presents new applications of marked point processes in forestry. The tools are pair correlation functions and mark connection functions. Studies of the structures of even-aged pine forests in Siberia show a tendency of development from clustering in young stands towards random distribution in elder stands for the trunk positions. The tree tops as the movable parts of trees are still more regular in old forests. Furthermore, in Siberian fir forests interesting tendencies of attraction between members of several tree classes are detected. Finally, studies of the distribution of damaged trees in some central European forests show that there the damaged trees appear as singletons; dominating trees are preferentially damaged. 相似文献

黔西北土法炼锌及铅锌选矿厂对河流造成严重的重金属污染。河流沉积物中重金属的化学形态研究表明,同一采样点中不同重金属的形态分布和同一重金属在不同采样点中的形态分布均有较大差异。这可能与沉积物组分的不同亲和力,不同河段沉积物中粘土矿物、有机质、Fe Mn氧化物含量的不同以及人为活动(生活污水、选矿剂、矿渣等)的加入等有关,而碳酸盐岩地质背景的河床本身可能也有较大影响。潜在生态危害指数法研究表明,沉积物中重金属表现出强生态风险性,产生生态危害的主要重金属污染物是Pb,其后依次是Cd、Cu和Zn。 相似文献

The present paper deals with ecological aspects of the pulmonate gastropod Siphonaria lessoni (Blainville, 1824), a common member of fouling communities in Mar del Plata's port (38°0817 S, 57°3118 W). Populations on colonized panels of an experimental raft were studied during three annual cycles, to determine feeding habits, growth and various factors which restrict their distribution on floating substrata. Although S. lessoni is harmless as a fouling organism, its grazing on the algal belt clears a part of the substratum's surface, which is then quickly colonized by truly aggressive organisms such as Balanus amphitrite. 相似文献

In the course of systematic and ecological studies on algal flora of fresh water environment of three different agroclimatic zone of Uttar Pradesh revealed one hundred eighty two species represented by fifty-two genera inhabiting fresh water bodies having different physico-chemical properties. In both the regions members of order Conjugales were dominant and represented by ninety nine species belonging to fourteen genera. This is followed by Chlorococcales having fifty two species represented by nineteen genera and Chaetophorales with nine species of four genera only. In the central Uttar Pradesh a positive correlation was found between hydrogen ions concentration with temperature and species diversity, while in western Uttar Pradesh a highly positive correlation was found in electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids. 相似文献

In enumerating data for systematic and ecological studies on meiofauna, an unfortunate diversification exists in the methods used for observation, identification, preservation and curatorial treatment of various taxa. The application of transmission electron microscopy resin embedment techniques to whole, quantitative, extracted meiofauna samples is described here as a new method, which overcomes most of these problems. Slide-shaped resin blocks are produced by this method; they contain the mass-embedded meiofauna on one side and sand from the sample site on the other side; the latter can be used in studying sand-grain epigrowth of Protista, Fungi and Monera. Examples for the applicability of these slides to various meiobenthic studies are given for most taxa, but especially for Turbellaria, Annelida and Mystacocarida. Using this resin-slide technique, whole quantitative transects can be deposited as “ecotype material” in museums. 相似文献

We suggest that general systems theory provides a common philosophical basis for dialog between ecological and social scientists interested in studying the reciprocal interactions of humans and their environment. We (1) provide a synopsis of the ‘systems approach' as viewed from the biological and social sciences, respectively; (2) develop a conceptual framework for the explicit linking of ecological and social variables, and (3) draw upon game theoretic results of the Prisoner's Dilemma to represent human decision-making quantitatively in a model that simulates the tragedy of the commons. The model consists of 5 submodels that represent the ‘observers world' and each of 4 ‘participant's worlds.' The observer's-world represents the decision processes, either Optimize or Tit-for-Tat, by which each of 2 users decides to add or remove animals. The 4 perceived worlds represent hypothetical situations in which (1) persons A and B both add an animal; (2) A adds and B does not; (3) B adds and A does not, and (4) neither A nor B add an animal. Simulation results indicate that net worth of the community and of each person individually under Tit-for-Tat is more than double the net worth attained under Optimize. Replacement of the static payoff matrix assumed in game theory with a dynamic quantitative model illustrates how ‘norm-based' approaches to ecosystem management can outperform optimizing approaches based on predicted outcomes. Although ‘soft systems' techniques may better help decision-makers reach norm-based agreements on ecosystem management, quantitative models have more explanatory value, and if developed sufficiently such models could incorporate complex social dimensions that would enhance further their explanatory value. 相似文献

ABSTRACTSeven volcanic rocks samples were collected from Southern Qinghai to analyze chemical speciation and migration behavior of heavy metals by sequential chemical extraction procedure and column leaching test. The geo-accumulation index, ecological risk index and the risk assessment code were applied to assess the heavy metal pollution and potential environmental effects in this area. Results revealed that the total concentrations of heavy metals did not exceed the background values in soil of this area. Most of the samples produced acid rock drainage. The order of heavy metal migration and transformation sequence in the volcanic rocks of Zhiduo region was Cd?>?Pb?>?As?=?Cu?=?Zn?=?Mn based on the geo-accumulation index and Cd caused heavy pollution, which was also confirmed by the leaching test. Moderate potential ecological risk posed by heavy metals occurred in the study area based on the potential ecological risk index. Cd contributed to most of ecological risk while the remaining heavy metals (except As) exerted medium to high risks to the environment according to the risk assessment code evaluation results. In summary, volcanic rocks possessed potential risks to the surroundings due to potential release of heavy metals. Cd that caused the pollution should be paid special attention. 相似文献

A shift in the basic philosophy of nature developed by Francis Bacon, Renè Descartes, and Isaac Newton, has been suggested but for the most part rejected within mainstream science. It suggests the need for viewing nature as a deeply organic and connected system of relationships that is not necessarily or readily submissive to reductive thinking and analysis. Ecosystem design within the construct of a field called ecological engineering poses fundamental questions with respect to the philosophy of nature upon which our current scientific paradigm is predominantly based. In an effort to foster development of rigorous, quantitative methods for developing insight into complex ecosystem phenomena we propose systems and engineering ecology—an integrated science comprised of principles from environ theory, ascendency theory, exergy theory, emergy theory, ecological network analysis and ecological modelling, synthesized through the formal agency of systems science. We contend that ecological engineering will be limited in its robustness apart from development of rigorous systems-based sciences that are quantitative and incorporate the complex, emergent properties of ecosystem. We justify our proposed framework on the philosophical paradox of transferring aspects of traditional engineering design into ecological engineering and on the four causes of Aristotle. 相似文献

生态足迹是定量研究区域可持续发展的一种重要方法。为了定量评价湖南省可持续发展程度的动态变化,利用生态足迹理论,计算分析了湖南省1998--2006年间的生态足迹变化过程。结果表明,湖南省人均生态足迹由1998年的1.2441hm。上升至2006年的1.6377hm^2;人均生态承载力由1998年的0.4819hm^2减少为2006年的0.4556hm^2,人均生态赤字由1998年的0.7622hm0上升到2006年的1.1821hm0。生态赤字逐年提高,生态足迹与生态承载力之间的矛盾加剧,区域生态环境处于不安全状态。生态足迹供需结构分析表明,湖南省人均生态足迹供需存在严重的不平衡,其需求以草地、耕地是构成湖南省人均生态足迹的主要组成部分,分别占人均生态足迹的30.11%~37.34%以及29.83%-33.53%,其次是化石能源地(17.60%~22.85%)。而供给以耕地为主,占人均生态承载力的51.02%~53.23%。研究期间万元GDP生态足迹总体上呈下降趋势,表明湖南省的资源利用率不断提高。同时根据生态盈亏的影响因素,并结合湖南省经济发展现状和资源分布特点,探讨了降低和消除区域生态赤字的措施建议。 相似文献
