Juveniles of the dendrobranchiate decapod Penaeus indicus take up radiolabelled zinc from solution at all exposure concentrations studied from 5.6 to 100 g l–1, with an uptake rate constant of 0.045 l g–1 day–1 at 15 salinity and 25°C. Over the first 10 days of zinc exposure, the new zinc taken up is added to the existing zinc content of the prawn with no significant excretion; over this period the rate of accumulation of radiolabelled zinc is a measure of the absolute zinc uptake rate from solution. Over the next 10 days of zinc exposure to 10 g Zn l–1, however, zinc is excreted at about half the rate of uptake resulting in a raised body concentration of zinc. Moulting had no significant effect on the accumulation of zinc. Newly accumulated zinc is distributed to all organs with the highest proportions of body content being found in the exoskeleton, followed by the muscle, the hepatopancreas and the antennal organs. Radiolabelled zinc is subsequently lost from all organs. Unlike caridean shrimps or prawns (pleocyemate decapods), therefore, penaeids (dendrobranchiate decapods) do not show regulation of zinc body concentrations to a constant level over a range of dissolved zinc bioavailabilities by matching zinc excretion to zinc uptake. Nevertheless, unlike amphipod crustaceans, P. indicus does excrete some of the zinc newly accumulated from solution after a time delay. Unlike their caridean counterparts, penaeid prawns inhabiting anthropogenically contaminated coastal waters with raised zinc bioavailabilities can be expected to contain raised body concentrations of zinc.Communicated by J.P. The spermatozoa of both Ascidiella aspersa and Ascidia mentula have architectural features characteristic of ascidian spermatozoa that have previously been described. They have an elongated head (7 µm long for A. aspersa and 4 µm long for A. mentula), a single mitochondrion that is applied laterally to the nucleus and lacks a midpiece. The acrosome of A. aspersa spermatozoa is a flattened vesicle, about 200 nm×100 nm×40 nm (length, width and height). The acrosome of A. mentula spermatozoa consists of multiple vesicles; they are about 50 nm×50 nm×40 nm (length, width and height). During spermiogenesis in both species, several proacrosomal vesicles (50–70 nm in diameter) appear in a blister at the future apex of the spermatid. In A. aspersa, these vesicles fuse with each other to form a single acrosomal vesicle, while in A. mentula these vesicles do not fuse with each other, and form multiple acrosomal vesicles. In A. aspersa spermatozoa, calcium ionophore A23187 induces the acrosome reaction in which membrane fusion between the acrosomal apical membrane and the overlying sperm plasma membrane occurs along the peripheral margin of the acrosome, resulting in the release of a hybrid, membrane-bound, small vesicle. In A. mentula, multiple acrosomal vesicles disappear by releasing small vesicles after treatment with the calcium ionophore A23187; this also appears to be an acrosome reaction. Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to describe spermatogenesis and the morphology of mature sperm and sperm storage organs in five sibling species of Capitella, three species in the related genus Capitomastus, and one species in the genus Capitellides. These capitellids lack a well-developed testis, but young males have a few specialized regions of the peritoneum in the eighth setiger, where germ cells proliferate and spermatogonia are released into the coelom, and spermiogenesis is completed. Mature sperm are stored in the central regions of paired genital ducts (coelomoducts), which lie between the seventh and eighth setigers. The cells forming the walls of the coelomostome and central region of the duct are ciliated and have large glycogen deposits. The lumenal borders have extensive microvilli and there is evidence that they secrete glycogen-containing materials into the duct. All species have modified primitive sperm with a conical acrosome, elongated nucleus, and long middle piece extending along the proximal portion of the flagellum. A single ring-shaped mitochondrion encircles the centriolar region of the middle piece and the cytoplasm is filled with glycogen. The sperm of all nine species differ significantly in the lengths of their middle pieces, acrosomes and especially in their nuclear lengths. The nuclear lengths have a twofold range among the sibling species of Capitella and Capitomastus. Subtle differences in the shape and volume of the acrosomal vesicle and acrosomal space characteristic of the Capitella sibling species seem to correlate with a basic division of these species into those with diploid chromosome numbers of 20 or 26. Spermiogenesis, the number of sperm produced, and the method of sperm storage are appropriate for efficient sperm utilization in fertilization. No evidence indicates that spermatophores are formed and transferred between individuals and the method of sperm transfer is not understood. The differences in the dimensions and acrosome morphology of mature sperm, and the previously demonstrated specializations in the egg envelopes in the Capitella sibling species, are characteristic features of the reproductive isolation that exists among these capitellid species.  相似文献

The cytoplasm of Crassostrea angulata (collected from the Atlantic coast of Northern Spain, Galiza, between 1992 and 1993) spermatogonia contains a few proacrosomal dense vesicles and intermitochondrial round granulo-fibrillar dense bodies. In primary spermatocytes, large cytoplasmic spaces appear occupied by large round and more scattered granulo-fibrillar dense bodies which are intermingled with cord-like dense structures and are in close association with mitochondria and the rough endoplasmic reticulum. As a result of Golgian activity, the number of dense proacrosomal vesicles increases and a flagellum arises from the centrioles. During the second meiotic division, several round dense bodies surrounding cord-like dense structures as well as dense proacrosomal vesicles, were observed between chromosomes. During spermiogenesis, no Golgian activity was noticed, and only the rough endoplasmic reticulum was observed in close association with proacrosomal vesicles. Similar results were observed for Ostrea edulis (collected from the Atlantic coast of southern Portugal, Algarve, between 1992 and 1993). Spermatozoa of both species are of the aquasperm type, and although their ultrastructure is quite similar, silver and phosphotungstic acid-chromic acid stainings enabled us to clearly distinguish both species at the ultrastructural level. The different morphological aspects of spermatogenesis in the Pteriomorphia and the use of silver and PTA stainings in the Mollusca are reviewed and discussed.  相似文献

In Dolioletta gegenbauri and Doliolum nationalis, collected in 1987 in the bay of Villefranche-sur-mer (French Mediterranean Sea), spermiogenesis is essentially the same. Early spermatids have a round head, a flagellum arising from a single centriole with short microtubules at 45° to its base, several mitochondria, and an acrosome 50 nm thick and 250 nm long with its long axis parallel to the plasma membrane. The acrosomal contents are dense, with a central denser plate. The nuclear envelope next to the acrosome is thickened and concave. In elongating nuclei, strands of chromatin become oriented parallel to the length of the nucleus and then twist helically. Although the mitochondria surround the nucleus, they remain relatively short and do not fuse into a single mitochondrion as in sperm of other tunicates. In very late doliolid spermatids, the acrosome undergoes exocytosis, and exposes fibrous material that stays associated with the tip of the sperm; no acrosomal tubule forms. Exocytosis at this stage may be triggered by fixation. If so, exocytosis probably occurs naturally at some time before fusion of sperm and egg. Sperm have elongate heads (1 m×10 m), with the anterior two-thirds of the nucleus surrounded by mitochondria. Spermiogenesis in doliolids, compared to that in other tunicates, is most like that in solitary members of the class Ascidiacea, except that in the latter the sperm mitochondria fuse and the acrosome appears incapable of exocytosis. In contrast, previous work has shown that salps (class Thaliacea) and colonial didemnid ascidians have an acrosomeless sperm with a spiral mitochondrion, while the class Appendicularia has a sperm with a midpiece, a compact head and an acrosome capable of exocytosis and acrosomal tubule formation. By outgroup comparison with echinoderms and acraniates, appendicularian sperm are plesiomorphic within the Tunicata. Thus, gamete morphology indicates that (1) solitary ascidians and doliolids had a common ancestor, (2) the popular idea that doliolids gave rise to appendicularians is incorrect, and (3) the Thaliacea are polyphyletic, doliolids having arisen very early from the ascidian lineage and salps having arisen later.  相似文献

Colonies ofPyrosoma atlanticum were collected by submersible in October 1988 in the Caribbean Sea, and testes were studied by electron microscopy. Spermatogonia, spermatocytes and early spermatids have two centrioles. The proximal centriole subsequently disappears, its remains apparently persisting in the spermatozoon as dense material adjacent to the distal centriole, which gives rise to the axoneme. At the tip of early spermatids are several 50 nm proacrosomal vesicles, which disappear leaving no trace in early elongating spermatids. The spermatozoon lacks an acrosome and has a head 35µm long. The head is differentiated into a bulbous posterior portion 5µm long × 1µm wide, a thinner anterior portion 25µm long tapering from a width of 0.7µm to a width of 0.4µm, and a very thin anterior extension 5µm long × 0.5µm wide. At the start of elongation, the anterior extension begins to form just lateral to the proacrosomal vesicles as a spiral projection comprising part of the nucleus, covered by a thin sheath of cytoplasm. This sheath of cytoplasm undergoes a complex differentiation. Ultimately, the nucleus in the anterior extension is overlain by two membrane-bound sheaths of cytoplasm connected by a spiral flange of cytoplasm. Between these two sheaths is a spiral space, open to the exterior through a subterminal pore near the sperm tip. In early spermatids the mitochondria fuse into a single mitochondrion, which remains lateral to the nucleus. The cristae become modified late in spermatogenesis. Throughout elongation of the spermatid there are patches of dense material between the nucleus and mitochondrion. A manchette of microtubules transiently encircles the thin anterior portion of the nucleus during the last phase of elongation. A manchette is not present during most of elongation. In the spermatozoon the mitochondrion, which has reticulate cristae, spirals a few times about the nucleus and extends from the junction between the bulbous portion and the thinner anterior portion of the nucleus to the junction between the thinner anterior portion and the nuclear extension. Spermatogenesis inP. atlanticum, compared to that in other tunicates, most closely resembles that in colonial ascidians, and supports the majority view that pyrosomes arose from aplousobranch ascidians that lost their attachment to the substratum. Pyrosome sperm are more highly derived than doliolid sperm, which have an acrosome that is probably capable of exocytosis. When salp and pyrosome sperm are compared, both are highly derived, but neither shares any apomorphies with the other that it does not share with at least one other tunicate order. Thus, sperm morphology does not support the majority view that pyrosomes gave rise to doliolids and neither confirms nor denies the idea that pyrosomes are intermediate between aplousobranch ascidians and salps. Therefore, it is likely that the class Thaliacea is polyphyletic, with doliolids arising very early from the ascidian lineage and with salps and pyrosomes arising somewhat later.  相似文献

Ultrastructural comparison between the sperm of the dorippid crabNeodorippe astuta (Fabricius, 1793) and the portunidPortunus pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1766) from Queensland, Australia, supports placement of dorippids with portunids and their relatives in the heterotreme section of the Eubrachyura (the Heterotremata - Thoracotremata or the Oxyrhyncha - Cancridea - Brachygnatha assemblage) and not withRanina ranina (in the Archaeobrachyura or the Oxystomata). Similarities between spermatozoa ofN. astuta and ofP. pelagicus (and other Eubrachyura) andR. ranina include: the large spherical, multi-layered, capsule-bound acrosome vesicle; the electron-dense operculum capping the vesicle; an invaginated core, or perforatorium; concentric zonation of the contents of the vesicle; a layer of cytoplasm, between the acrosome vesicle and the nucleus, which contains mitochondria (mostly degenerating) and lattice-like lamellar complexes or membrane remnants; a diffuse nucleus which is bounded externally by a combined nuclear and plasma membrane and cups the scanty cytoplasm and the large acrosome vesicle; and lateral arms into which the chromatin extends. Characteristic eubrachyuran features of theN. astuta sperm absent fromR. ranina are the long perforatorium (short and conical with a unique subacrosomal chamber inR. ranina) extending almost to the operculum; presence in the perforatorium of longitudinally arranged convoluted tubules; a zone of acrosomal rays forming the outer part of an inner dense zone; the presence of a thickened ring surrounding the basal part of the perforatorium; and, basally, two centrioles (absent fromR. ranina but also from some eubrachyurans). The sperm ofN. astuta is more similar to that ofP. pelagicus than to that of other investigated Brachyura. A heterotreme status ofN. astuta is thus unequivocally supported. Both species lack the posterior median process seen in the nucleus of majids andR. ranina.  相似文献

Using transmission electron microscopy, spermatozoa from a member of the Tridacnidae, or giant clams, are described for the first time and compared with spermatozoa of other bivalves, especially other heterodonts. The acrosomal vesicle of Tridacna maxima (Röding, 1798) is short (0.37?μm), blunt-conical, and exhibits a prominent basal ring. A narrow apical elaboration of the nucleus, the nuclear peg, projects deep into the basal invagination of the acrosomal vesicle. Aside from this specialization, the nucleus is a solid elongate-cylindrical structure (7.66?μm) that exhibits several small irregular lacunae. Four or occasionally three round-ovate mitochondria surround a pair of orthogonally-arranged, triplet-substructure centrioles. The proximal centriole is connected to a small indentation of the nuclear base by a thin layer of granular pericentriolar material, whereas the distal centriole is anchored to the plasma membrane by nine terminally-forked satellite fibres. The 9?+?2 pattern axoneme of the tail is continuous with the distal centriole. Comparison with other bivalves indicates a very close relationship between tridacnids and cardiids based on sperm ultrastructure. Specifically, the presence of a nuclear peg links Tridacna spp. with the cardiid genus Cerastoderma, but further information on the many unstudied genera is required to test the exact nature of this relationship. The sperm ultrastructure provides additional support for the recently proposed hypothesis that the Tridacnidae may be no more than a specialized subfamily of the Cardiidae.  相似文献

Simultaneous hermaphroditism with outcrossing, a previously unconfirmed sexual system in decapod crustaceans, is documented in the shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni (Gibbes), using time-lapse video observations on mating in pairs of “female-phase” (FP) individuals. Copulations between FPs resulted in successful spawning and development of embryos. However, female-phase hermaphrodites maintained in isolation were unable to self-fertilize spawned eggs. All smaller individuals possessed characters typical of caridean males, including male gonopores, appendices masculinae, ejaculatory ducts, and cincinnuli on the first pleopods. However, the gonad of these male-phase (MP) individuals was an ovotestis with an undeveloped ovarian portion. FPs, which spawn eggs and incubate embryos, also had male gonopores and an ovotestis terminating in ejaculatory ducts containing sperm. In FPs, male pleopod characters were absent or reduced, and a female incubatory character, expanded pleopod flanges, showed a greater relative size. Smaller size classes of the population were composed only of MPs while larger size classes consisted of both MPs and FPs. “Transitionals,” individuals with MP characters but an ovotestis containing vitellogenic oocytes, were rare and overlapped completely in size with FP and larger MP individuals. It is suggested that not all MPs transform into FP hermaphrodites. Social interactions may mediate MP change into FP hermaphrodites in L. wurdemanni. An ecological survey was carried out to determine the sediment concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish and shrimp including tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus×O. nilotica), grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), gei wai shrimp (Metapenaeus ensis) and caridean shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponensis) in the traditional tidal shrimp ponds (gei wais) of Mai Po Nature Reserve, Hong Kong. The sediments collected from the landward sites contained higher nutrient contents, as well as zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) than those collected from the seaward sites, but vice versa for lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg). However, the concentrations of all metals were exceptionally high in the two sites located outside the reserve, suggesting that waters from Deep Bay might be the possible source of metal contamination affecting the reserve. All metals studied seemed to accumulate in the viscera of fish. Body size was the determining factor for the accumulation of heavy metals in caridean shrimp and gei wai shrimp but not fish. Concentrations of the metals studied in tissues of grey mullet and gei wai shrimp were found to be safe for human consumption. Concentrations of Cr in tilapia whole body (0.68–1.10 mg kg−1 wet weight) were close to or over the guideline value of 1 mg kg−1 set by the Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Regulations of Hong Kong. Tilapia flesh and small caridean shrimp collected from gei wais were contaminated by Cr and Pb but still fit for human consumption. Caution is required if large caridean shrimp is to be consumed in large amounts continuously because the concentration of Pb exceeded the maximum permitted concentration (6 mg kg−1). The rather high Cr concentrations in tilapia whole body should not be overlooked as the fish will serve as a food source for migratory birds visiting the site.  相似文献

Male red frog crabs, Ranina ranina, were collected year round in 1990 and 1991 off Hachijojima for histological study of the reproductive system and cycle. The testis containing the lobules and seminiferous ducts is surrounded by connective tissue. The seminiferous duct connects to the anterior end of the vas deferens, which can be histologically divided into three portions similar to one another in appearance. It was surrounded by fibrous connective tissue, muscle fibrils and columnar epithelium. Muscle fibrils were absent in the anterior portion. Multiple sperm masses were not formed in the vas deferens and ejaculatory duct, but the sperm mass was covered with a capsule composed of two layers. The outer layer of the capsule was periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive, but the inner layer was negative. Both layers were Alcian Blue negative, except the vacuoles in the outer layer that were stained blue. The small round androgenic gland was attached to the posterior end of the vas deferens of the coxa of the eighth thoracic appendage. The ejaculatory duct was distinguishable from the vas deferens by the absence of columnar epithelium and the presence of thick longitudinal muscle fibers. Spermatogenesis was histochemically examined. The acrosomal vesicle appeared to be derived from PAS-positive vesicles in the cytoplasm of the spermatid at the early stage of spermiogenesis. The arms were positive to the Feulgen reaction and the subacrosomal region was negative to PAS. Seasonal changes in reproductive cycle were inconspicuous histologically and microscopically. Sperm were always present in the testis and vas deferens throughout the year and occupied 5.1 to 19.6% of testis observed in cross sections. The minimum size of maturity is less than 39 mm carapace length, but the minimum size capable of successful mating was estimated to be ca. 55 mm.  相似文献

Pronounced sperm dimorphism is reported for the first time in the prosobranch order Vetigastropoda. Using transmission electron microscopy, it is demonstrated thatZalipais laseroni Kershaw (Trochoidea: Skeneidae) produces uniflagellate euspermatozoa (eupyrene, fertile sperm) and multiflagellate paraspermatozoa (oligopyrene, infertile sperm). Euspermatozoa show the following features: (1) a conical acrosomal vesicle; (2) a long tubular, helically coiled nucleus; (3) a short midpiece (mitochondrial sleeve surrounding a 3µm-long electron-dense rod); (4) a chambered body (? fused centrioles) continuous with the dense rod of the midpiece; (5) a flagellum (characterized by an electron-dense sheath surrounding and partly obscuring the central pair of tubules). Paraspermatozoa are composed of an elongate head (lacking an acrosomal complex), a short midpiece (centriolar rods interspersed with mitochondria), and a posterior tuft of flagella. The head consists of a rodshaped anterior body and a condensed nuclear remnant — the latter lodged in a shallow invagination of the anterior body. Multiple flagella are attached via centriolar rods to a layer of dense material lining the nuclear remnant membrane. During paraspermatozoan development, the nucleus partially degenerates, then condenses, while the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), apparently assisted by the Golgi complex, is responsible for production of numerous, electron-dense secretory vesicles. These vesicles subsequently fuse to form the elongate, anterior body of the head region. The ability of at least one line of trochoid gastropods to produce an oligopyrene, multiaxonemal paraspermatozoon, suggests that the Caenogastropoda (with this feature) might have been derived from the Vetigastropoda rather than from any other archaeogastropod source.  相似文献

Comparison of the life-histories of two species pairs of caridean decapods, each pair containing a polar and a more temperate-water species (Chorismus antarcticus (Pfeffer, 1887)/Pandalus montagui Leach, 1814 and Notocrangon antarcticus (Pfeffer, 1887)/ crangon crangon (Linnaeus, 1758), suggested that in each case the polar species was more of a K-strategist than was the temperate species. In particular there were striking differences in brood size, egg weight and maturity of the newly hatched larvae. Measurements of individual annual reproductive effort, RE, as g fresh weight eggs per g fresh weight female indicated that in both species pairs the RE of the polar K-strategist was significantly less than that of the comparable temperate water r-strategist. Results expressing RE as g total egg lipid per g fresh weight female were equivocal. These data are discussed in relation to available autecological information for Anterctic marine invertebrates and it is concluded that many features of the polar benthos are explicable in terms of a general evolution of typical K-strategies. The role of low temperature in the widespread evolution of K-strategies may be crucial; consideration of this leads to a re-appraisal of cold-adaptation.  相似文献

The whelk Buccinum undatum L. in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence has a distinct annual reproductive cycle. The ovary and pallial oviduct of the female, and the seminal vesicle of the male, show parallel development, whereas the testis has an inverse cycle. Thus, at the end of winter when the ovary, pallial oviduct and seminal vesicle reach maximal size, the testis is small and undeveloped, whereas the reverse situation occurs in summer. This is the first report of a totally inverse relationship between the ovary and testis for a marine invertebrate. This unusual pattern is due to the long-term storage of sperm in the seminal vesicle of the male prior to copulation. There is no resting period at the end of oogenesis, but rather renewed ovarian development starts shortly after gamete release. By contrast, in the testis after transfer of sperm to the seminal vesicle at the end of spermatogenesis, there is a distinct period of phagocytosis. Mating begins in mid-May, reaches a peak during June and terminates prior to July. Egg laying begins in late May, reaches a peak in mid-June to mid-July and can continue until late August. Examination of the incidence of individuals with food in their stomachs showed that feeding activity is maximal in late autumn through to early spring and decreases sharply coincident with the onset of breeding in late May.  相似文献

Feeding in relation to temporal changes in the depth distribution of predator and prey is described for 9 species of mesopelagic decapods from an examination of 268 foreguts. Intensive nighttime feeding appears to be the rule in all species. The smaller decapods Sergestes (Sergestes) atlanticus, Sergestes (Sergestes) sargassi and Sergestes (Sergestes) pectinatus exploit the smaller prey, principally copepods and to a lesser extent ostracods. Larger decapod species Sergestes (Sergestes) henseni, Sergestes (Sergestes) curvatus, Sergestes (Sergia) grandis, Systellaspis debilis, and Acanthephyra purpurea mainly prey on macrozooplankton and micronekton, i.e., chaetognaths, euphausiids, decapods and fish, but copepods also occur in the foreguts. Gennadas valens is exceptional for the high incidence of foraminiferal remains, and a predator-prey relationship seems probable. All 9 decapod species have mixed diets, and pronounced feeding preferences are not evident. However, a high incidence of “secondary” feeding or “dietary contamination” has been deduced from the frequent occurrence of remains of the copepods Pleuromamma spp. and Oncaea spp. in the foreguts of the larger decapod species. Direct feeding cannot have occurred, since the depth distributions of these copepods and decapods are disjunct by day and night. It is concluded that the remains of Pleuromamma probably represent the food of the larger prey such as chaetognaths etc. which are eaten by the decapods. The presence of Oncaea is speculatively attributed to a possible ectoparasitic relationship with the larger prey items, but confirmatory evidence is required. These anomalies suggest that caution must be exercised in deducing predator-prey relationships simply from gut contents without consideration of distributional factors.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of sub-chronic exposure to benzo(a)pyrene on the antioxidant system and histology of rat epididymal sperm. Intraperitoneal administration of benzo(a)pyrene to male Wistar rats at doses between 1 and 100 µg/kg body weight for 60 days entailed a decrease in the weight of the epididymis (caput and cauda), seminal vesicle, and prostate, while the body weight was not affected. Epididymal sperm reserves were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. Indicators of lipid peroxidation were increased while activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in all three epididymal regions decreased. Recent studies of non-random paternity have suggested that sperm selection by females may influence male fertilization success. Here we argue that the problems originally encountered in partitioning variation in non-random mating between male competition and female choice are even more pertinent to interpreting patterns of non-random paternity because of intense sperm competition between males. We describe an experiment with the yellow dung fly, Scatophaga stercoraria, designed to partition variance in the proportion of offspring sired by the second male, P 2, between males and females, and to control for sperm competition. Large males were shown to have a higher P 2 than small males but P 2 was independent of the size of the female’s first mate. This result might suggest an absolute female preference for large males via sperm selection. However, large males have a higher constant rate of sperm transfer and displacement. After controlling for this effect of sperm competition, large males did not achieve higher paternity than small males. We argue that a knowledge of the mechanism of sperm competition is essential so that male effects can be controlled before conclusions are made regarding the influence of sperm selection by females in generating non-random paternity. Structural specializations of chelipeds used by caridean shrimp in two kinds of grooming activity are described. In general body grooming, the chelipeds, and in some species, the last walking legs, nip, pick or brush material from the exoskeleton. When the cleaning chelipeds are the second pair, the carpal segment is multisegmented, increasing distal flexibility which aids in grooming. Tufts of compound setae and setal chela locks are characteristic of cleaning chelae. In representatives from 13 of 15 caridean families surveyed, brushes of serrate setae surround the carpal-propodal joint of the first cheliped. This setal structure is used in the specific task of cleaning the chemotactile antennal flagellum. Cleaning brushes on the last walking legs of some species are involved in general body cleaning. Experiments on Heptacarpus pictus showed that when the cleaning chelipeds were ablated, body parts became fouled with epizoites and particulate debris in experimental shrimps, while control shrimps showed little fouling. Suggestions on the adaptive role of general body cleaning in these natant animals are discussed. A survey of cleaning characters in representatives from 15 caridean families suggest that such characters are rather constant within a family. A possible correlation between the taxonomic success of a family and the degree of development of general body cleaning is suggested.  相似文献

Two conflicting models for the organisation of assemblages of fish and decapods associated with seagrass over large spatial scales, make contradictory predictions about the relationship between density of seagrass shoots and abundance, or diversity, of animals. We tested the predictions of both models by sampling small lish and decapods associated with two species of seagrass (Zostera capricorni Aschers and Posidonia australis Hook) at up to 16 sites within several estuaries in New South Wales, Australia, for 1.5 yr (December 1988 to March 1990). Variation in density of Z. capricorni shoots explained very little of the variation in abundance of animals. However, abundance of one species, the grass shirmp Macrobrachium intermedium, was more closely related to the density of shoots during non-recruitment seasons, suggesting that predation or emigration of individuals after settlement was greater in sparse beds. The effect of variation in density of P. australis shoots was confounded with consistent distribution patterns of most fish and decapod species. As a result, data from P. australis did not provide good tests of the hypotheses. We conclude that density of seagrass shoots explained very little of the large-scale variation in abundance of associated fish and decapods. The data do, however, support the inodel which predicts that the abundance of animals among separate seagrass beds will follow the supply of new individuals to them.  相似文献
