A research project recently completed on behalf of the UK Environment Agency, has collected data and sampled leachates from EU landfills that have received imports of MSOR and MBT wastes. Results are presented for sanitary analyses, heavy metals, and an extensive range of trace organic substances, from sites containing MBT wastes that have received different degrees of composting pre-treatment. Leachates produced from MSOR wastes have a very high polluting potential, but biological pre-treatment of these wastes can avoid the peak acetogenic phase of decomposition, and produce leachates similar to, or weaker than, those from conventional methanogenic landfills. Effective MBT processes can also significantly reduce concentrations of trace organics, and of ammoniacal-N in leachates. However, further research is needed to examine the relative importance of nitrification/denitrification processes, generation of stable, organically based nitrogen forms, and other routes during MBT processing, in order that appropriate reactions to remove nitrogen can be encouraged and optimised.  相似文献

Legislation in some parts of the world now requires municipal solid waste (MSW) to be processed prior to landfilling to reduce its biodegradability and hence its polluting potential through leachate and fugitive emission of greenhouse gases. This pre-processing may be achieved through what is generically termed mechanical–biological-treatment (MBT). One of the major concerns relating to MBT wastes is that the strength of the material may be less than for raw MSW, owing to the removal of sheet, stick and string-like reinforcing elements during processing. Also, the gradual increase in mobilized strength over strains of 30% or so commonly associated with unprocessed municipal solid waste may not occur with treated wastes. This paper describes a series of triaxial tests carried out to investigate the stress–strain–strength characteristics of an MBT waste, using a novel digital image analysis technique for the determination of detailed displacement fields over the whole specimen. New insights gained into the mechanical behavior of MBT waste include the effect of density on the stress–strain response, the initial 1-D compression of lightly consolidated specimens, and the likely reinforcing effect of small sheet like particles remaining in the waste.  相似文献

Within the scope of an investigation for the German Federal Environment Agency (“Umweltbundesamt”), the basics for the estimation of the methane emissions from the landfilling of mechanically and biologically treated waste (MBT) were developed. For this purpose, topical research including monitoring results regarding the gas balance at MBT landfills was evaluated. For waste treated to the required German standards, a methane formation potential of approximately 18–24 m3 CH4/t of total dry solids may be expected. Monitoring results from MBT landfills show that a three-phase model with differentiated half-lives describes the degradation kinetics in the best way. This is due to the fact that during the first years of disposal, the anaerobic degradation processes still proceed relatively intensively. In addition in the long term (decades), a residual gas production at a low level is still to be expected. Most of the soils used in recultivation layer systems at German landfills show a relatively high methane oxidation capacity up to 5 l CH4/(m2 h). However, measurements at MBT disposal sites indicate that the majority of the landfill gas (in particular at non-covered areas), leaves the landfill body via preferred gas emission zones (hot spots) without significant methane oxidation. Therefore, rather low methane oxidation factors are recommended for open and temporarily covered MBT landfills. Higher methane oxidation rates can be achieved when the soil/recultivation layer is adequately designed and operated.Based on the elaborated default values, the First Order Decay (FOD) model of the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, 2006, was used to estimate the methane emissions from MBT landfills. Due to the calculation made by the authors emissions in the range of 60,000–135,000 t CO2-eq./a for all German MBT landfills can be expected. This wide range shows the uncertainties when the here used procedure and the limited available data are applied. It is therefore necessary to generate more data in the future in order to calculate more precise methane emission rates from MBT landfills. This is important for the overall calculation of the climate gas production in Germany which is required once a year by the German Government.  相似文献

The waste-LCA model EASEWASTE quantifies potential environmental effects from biological treatment of organic waste, based on mass and energy flows, emissions to air, water, soil and groundwater as well as effects from upstream and downstream processes. Default technologies for composting, anaerobic digestion and combinations hereof are available in the model, but the user can change all key parameters in the biological treatment module so that specific local plants and processes can be modelled. EASEWASTE is one of the newest waste LCA models and the biological treatment module was built partly on features of earlier waste-LCA models, but offers additional facilities, more flexibility, transparency and user-friendliness. The paper presents the main features of the module and provides some examples illustrating the capability of the model in environmentally assessing and discriminating the environmental performance of alternative biological treatment technologies in relation to their mass flows, energy consumption, gaseous emissions, biogas recovery and compost/digestate utilization.  相似文献

In landfill, high temperature levels come from aerobic reactions inside the waste surface layer. They are known to make anaerobic processes more reliable, by partial removal of easily biodegradable substrates. Aerobic biodegradation of the main components of biodegradable matter (paper and cardboard waste, food and yard waste) is considered. In this paper, two models which take into account the effect of moisture on aerobic biodegradation kinetics are discussed. The first one (Model A) is a simple, first order, substrate-related model, which assumes that substrate hydrolysis is the limiting step of the process. The second one (Model B) is a biomass-dependant model, considering biological growth processes. Respirometric experiments were performed in order to evaluate the efficiency of each model. The biological oxygen demands of shredded paper and cardboard samples and of food and yard waste samples prepared at various initial water contents were measured. These experimental data were used to identify model parameters. Model A, which includes moisture dependency on the maximum amount of biodegraded matter, is relevant for paper and cardboard biodegradation. On the other hand, Model B, including moisture effect on the growth rate of biomass is suitable to describe food and yard waste biodegradation.  相似文献

This paper discusses the mechanisms involved in the compression of domestic waste, and how the resulting compression behaviour may be modelled. Reference is made to experimental data illustrating the effect of gas content and pore water pressure on bulk density and drainable porosity, and a theoretical model able to reproduce some but not all features of the data is presented.  相似文献

The distribution and impacts of different nitrogen pollutants are inextricably linked. To understand the problem fully, the interactions between the different pollutants need to be taken into account. This is particularly important when it comes to abatement techniques, since measures to reduce emissions of one nitrogen pollutant can often lead to an increase in another. This project represents a step towards greater understanding of these issues by linking together new and existing nitrogen flux models into a larger framework. The modelling framework has been constructed and some of the nitrogen flows between fields, farms and the atmosphere have been modelled for a UK study area for typical farm management scenarios.  相似文献

Modelling municipal solid waste generation: a review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this paper is to review previously published models of municipal solid waste generation and to propose an implementation guideline which will provide a compromise between information gain and cost-efficient model development. The 45 modelling approaches identified in a systematic literature review aim at explaining or estimating the present or future waste generation using economic, socio-demographic or management-orientated data. A classification was developed in order to categorise these highly heterogeneous models according to the following criteria--the regional scale, the modelled waste streams, the hypothesised independent variables and the modelling method. A procedural practice guideline was derived from a discussion of the underlying models in order to propose beneficial design options concerning regional sampling (i.e., number and size of observed areas), waste stream definition and investigation, selection of independent variables and model validation procedures. The practical application of the findings was demonstrated with two case studies performed on different regional scales, i.e., on a household and on a city level. The findings of this review are finally summarised in the form of a relevance tree for methodology selection.  相似文献

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is often used for the solidification/stabilization (S/S) of waste containing heavy metals and salts. These waste components will precipitate in the form of insoluble compounds on to unreacted cement clinker grains preventing further hydration. In this study the long term effects of the presence of contaminants in solidified waste is examined by numerically simulating cement hydration after precipitation of metal salts on the surface of cement grains. A cement hydration model was extended in order to describe pore water composition and the effects of cement grain coating. Calculations were made and the strength development predicted by the model was found to agree qualitatively with experimental results found in literature. The complete model is useful in predicting the strength and leaching resistance of solidified products and developing solidification recipes based on cement.  相似文献

Modelling the biochemical degradation of solid waste in landfills   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper describes the concept of a generic spatially distributed numerical model that has been developed to contain and link sub-models of landfill processes in order to simulate solid waste degradation and gas generation in landfills. The model includes the simulation of the transport of leachate and gases, and the consolidation of the solid waste. The structure of the model consists of linked discrete constant volume elements. The paper outlines the theoretical background that provides the framework to contain the numerical procedures that make up the model. Details are also given of the approach to the modelling of the chemistry and microbiology of solid waste degradation.  相似文献

The interaction of parameters determining the potential emissions of two different mechanically-biologically pretreated municipal solid wastes (MBT wastes) is elucidated in this work. The origins of the wastes are Germany and Sweden. By means of lab-scale experiments, increased stabilisation through composting is preferably determined by a decrease in respiration activity. Concurrently, the stabilisation is verified for the leachates by a decrease in COD, DOC, and BOD(5). Total organic carbon content reflects stabilisation less accurately. FT-IR and thermal analytical methods add valuable information about the state of degradation, especially when several distinct thermal parameters are taken into account. Mobility of Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn produced by a batch leaching test with deionized water is reduced by the pretreatment of both materials. Mobility of copper unambiguously increased. A principle component analysis (PCA) of membrane fractionated leachates indicates an affinity of Cu to mobile humic acids or dissolved organic carbon. High Cr, Zn, and Ni contents in the solid co-occur with high contents of solid humic acids. To a lesser extent, this is also true for solid Cd, Cu, and Pb contents. Due to differences in required landfilling conditions, actual emissions and after-care phase length will depend on whether each waste is landfilled in Germany or Sweden.  相似文献

With the introduction of producer responsibility legislation within the UK (i.e., waste electrical and electronic equipment directive and end-of-life vehicles directive), specific recycling and recovery targets have been imposed to improve the sustainability of end-of-life products. With the introduction of these targets, and the increased investment in post-fragmentation facilities, automated material separation technologies are playing an integral role within the UK's end-of-life waste management strategy. Post-fragmentation facilities utilise a range of purification technologies that target certain material attributes (e.g., density, magnetism, volume) to isolate materials from the shredded waste stream. High ferrous prices have historically meant that UK facilities have been primarily interested in recovering iron and steel, establishing processing routes that are very effective at removing these material types, but as a consequence are extremely rigid and inflexible. With the proliferation of more exotic materials within end-of-life products, combined with more stringent recycling targets, there is therefore a need to optimise the current waste reclamation processes to better realise effort-to-value returns. This paper provides a background as to the current post-fragmentation processing adopted within the UK, and describes the development of a post-fragmentation modelling approach, capable of simulating the value-added processing that a piece of automated separation equipment can have on a fragmented waste stream. These include the modelling of the inefficiencies of the technology, the effects of material entanglement on separation, determination of typical material sizing and an appreciation for compositional value. The implementation of this approach within a software decision-support system is described, before the limitations, calibration and further validation of the approach are discussed.  相似文献

Mechanical–biological treatment (MBT) processes are increasingly being adopted as a means of diverting biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill, for example to comply with the EU Landfill Directive. However, there is considerable uncertainty concerning the residual pollution potential of such wastes. This paper presents the results of laboratory experiments on two different MBT waste residues, carried out to investigate the remaining potential for the generation of greenhouse gases and the flushing of contaminants from these materials when landfilled. The potential for gas generation was found to be between 8% and 20% of that for raw MSW. Pretreatment of the waste reduced the potential for the release of organic carbon, ammoniacal nitrogen, and heavy metal contents into the leachate; and reduced the residual carbon remaining in the waste after final degradation from ~320 g/kg dry matter for raw MSW to between 183 and 195 g/kg dry matter for the MBT wastes.  相似文献

Incorporation of organic waste amendments to a horticultural soil, prior to expected risk periods, could immobilise mineral N, ultimately reducing nitrogen (N) losses as nitrous oxide (N2O) and leaching. Two organic waste amendments were selected, a fresh green waste (FGW) and green waste compost (GWC) as they had suitable biochemical attributes to initiate N immobilisation into the microbial biomass and organic N forms. These characteristics include a high C:N ratio (FGW 44:1, GWC 35:1), low total N (<1%), and high lignin content (>14%). Both products were applied at 3 t C/ha to a high N (plus N fertiliser) or low N (no fertiliser addition) Vertisol soil in PVC columns. Cumulative N2O production over the 28 day incubation from the control soil was 1.5 mg/N2O/m2, and 11 mg/N2O/m2 from the control + N. The N2O emission decreased with GWC addition (< 0.05) for the high N soil, reducing cumulative N2O emissions by 38% by the conclusion of the incubation. Analysis of mineral N concentrations at 7, 14 and 28 days identified that both FGW and GWC induced microbial immobilisation of N in the first 7 days of incubation regardless of whether the soil environment was initially high or low in N; with the FGW immobilising up to 30% of available N. It is likely that the reduced mineral N due to N immobilisation led to a reduced substrate for N2O production during the first week of the trial, when soil N2O emissions peaked. An additional finding was that FGW + N did not decrease cumulative N2O emissions compared to the control + N, potentially due to the fact that it stimulated microbial respiration resulting in anaerobic micro sites in the soil and ultimately N2O production via denitrification. Therefore, both materials could be used as post harvest amendments in horticulture to minimise N loss through nitrate-N leaching in the risk periods between crop rotations. The mature GWC has potential to reduce N2O, an important greenhouse gas.  相似文献

Mechanical–biological treatments (MBTs) of urban waste are growing in popularity in many European countries. Recent studies pointed out that their contribution in terms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other air pollutants is not negligible. Compared to classical removal technologies, non-thermal plasmas (NTP) showed better performances and low energy consumption when applied to treat lowly concentrated streams. Therefore, to study the feasibility of the application of NTP to MBTs, a Dielectric Barrier Discharge reactor was applied to treat a mixture of air and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), to simulate emissions from MBTs. The removal efficiency of MEK was linearly dependent upon time, power and specific input energy. Only 2–4% of MEK was converted to carbon dioxide (CO2), the remaining carbon being involved in the formation of byproducts (methyl nitrate and 2,3-butanedione, especially). For future development of pilot-scale reactors, acting on residence time, power, convective flow and catalysts will help finding a compromise between energy consumption, desired abatement and selectivity to CO2.  相似文献

A mathematical model can help waste planners to optimize waste management systems related to environmental protection. It can also help government bodies set guidelines and regulations, and evaluate prevailing strategies for handling and disposal of waste. In this paper, a technique to develop a mathematical model to correlate the generation rate of biomedical waste (contaminated with blood and body fluid) as a function of bed occupancy and type of ailment (in terms of seasonal changes) using data for two consecutive years from three different healthcare facilities is presented. The data exhibit different trends in biomedical waste generation rates and number of beds occupied in two different years. However, the seasonal variation in biomedical waste production rate remained nearly the same during these 2 years. The fixed trend in biomedical waste generation rate in two consecutive years could be due to similar seasonal illnesses pattern and social factors.  相似文献

Modelling leachate quality and quantity in municipal solid waste landfills.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The operational phase of landfills may last for 20 years or more. Significant changes in leachate quality and generation rate may occur during this operational period. A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the landfill leachate behaviour and distributions of moisture and leachate constituents through the landfill, taking into consideration the effects of time-dependent landfill development on the hydraulic characteristics of waste and composition of leachate. The model incorporates governing equations that describe processes influencing the leachate production and biochemical processes taking place during the stabilization of wastes, including leachate flow, dissolution, acidogenesis and methanogenesis. To model the hydraulic property changes occurring during the development stage of the landfills, a conceptual modelling approach was proposed. This approach considers the landfill to consist of cells or columns of cells, which are constructed at different times, and considers each cell in the landfill to consist of several layers. Each layer is assumed to be a completely mixed reactor containing uniformly distributed solid waste, moisture, gases and micro-organisms. The use of the proposed conceptual model enables the incorporation of the spatial changes in hydraulic properties of the landfill into the model and also makes it possible to predict the spatial and temporal distributions of moisture and leachate constituents. The model was calibrated and partially verified using leachate data from Keele Valley Landfill in Ontario, Canada and data obtained from the literature. Ranges of values were proposed for model parameters applicable for real landfill conditions.  相似文献

The paper aims at simulating the closed-system dynamic leaching of a cement-based monolith containing lead with the numerical reactive transport code HYTEC in a 3D-cylindrical geometry. The model considers, simultaneously, the chemical evolution of pore water, the progression of mineralogical alteration fronts, and the concomitant release of elements from the S/S waste. In good agreement with the experiment, element releases were found to be mainly controlled by either diffusion (Na, K, and, to a lesser extent, Cl), by surface dissolution (Ca, Si) or by a mixed evolution (Pb, SO4). All of the calculated mineralogical transformations take place in a thin layer beyond the monolith surface. Consequently, modelling of Ca, Si and SO4 releases was quite sensitive to the node size of the simulation grid and was improved by taking into account the increase of porosity and effective diffusion coefficient due to mineral dissolution in the leached layer. In agreement with experimental results, the deepest front corresponds under closed-system conditions to portlandite dissolution and calcium silicate hydrates CSH 1.8 transformation into CSH of lower Ca/Si ratio. A second, distinct and intermediate, front is made by ettringite dissolution. The network of CSH is globally preserved in the leached layer, complete dissolution occurring over a very small thickness only. Finally, hydrotalcite precipitation in the leached layer is expected by modelling due to pH drop.  相似文献

Mechanical-biological pre-treatment (MBP) of municipal solid waste (MSW) has gained evidence as a practice capable of accomplishing the requirements for environmental sustainable landfilling. In particular, MBP is effective in reducing the ammoniacal nitrogen content in the leachate. However, few data are available on the modifications of the nitrogen forms occurring during MBP and on the role played by processes such as nitrification and generation of refractory organic compounds. The dynamic transformations of nitrogen were investigated during the MBP. MSW was mechanically and biologically pre-treated; samples were collected at different stages of the process and analysed to investigate the evolution of nitrogen forms; batch and column leaching tests were performed as well. The results indicate that nitrification is negligible and volatilization can only partially explain the low ammoniacal nitrogen content in the leachate. Incorporation of ammoniacal nitrogen into a refractory organic form was assessed and is likely to play an important role. The maximum content of refractory organic nitrogen in the solid waste was achieved after about 60 days of aerobic pre-treatment; therefore, the minimal duration of the MBP should be about 8-9 weeks in order to optimize the ammoniacal nitrogen incorporation, unless the waste is characterized by a low C/N ratio.  相似文献
