Two species of small gastropods (<6 mm in length), Amphissa acutecostata (Philippi, 1844) and Gymnobela subaraneosa (Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1896), widely distributed in the northeast Atlantic, were found in large numbers in the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic). Except for some aspects of taxonomy and distribution, as well as some data on larval development, the biology of these species is unknown. This study describes basic aspects of the life-history strategies of both species. Histological studies showed that oocyte and sperm development in both species was similar to the gametogenetic patterns observed in other deep-sea gastropods. In females, oogonia proliferated in the germinal epithelium and developed into previtellogenic oocytes (30–40 m), which grew into vitellogenic primary oocytes. Vitellogenic oocytes were covered by a thin layer of follicle cells involved in the vitellogenic processes. The maximum size for mature oocytes was 99.06 m for A. acutecostata and 114.82 m for G. subaraneosa. In A. acutecostata most of the volume of the ovary was occupied by previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes, whereas in G. subaraneosa most of the volume was filled by large vitellogenic oocytes. Both species showed quasi-continuous production of oocytes. The oocyte size-frequency diagrams suggested a continuous release of a small number of oocytes throughout the year for A. acutecostata, and asynchronous periodic spawning events for G. subaraneosa. Gonad development and gametogenesis could be strongly affected by presence of parasites in one of the populations of G. subaraneosa.Communicated by J.P. Thorpe, Port Erin  相似文献

The chaotic physical and chemical environment at deep-sea hydrothermal vents has been associated with an ecosystem with few predators, arguably allowing the habitat to provide refuge for vulnerable species. The dominance of endemic limpets with thin, open-coiled shells at north Pacific vents may support this view. To test their vulnerability to predation, the incidence of healed repair scars, which are argued to reflect non-lethal encounters with predators, were examined on the shells of over 5,800 vent limpets of Lepetodrilus fucensis McLean (1988) that were collected from 13 to 18 August 1996. Three vent fields on the Juan de Fuca Ridge at ca. 2,200 m depth were sampled, two within 70 m of 47°56.87′N 129°05.91′W, and one at 47°57.85′N 129°05.15′W with the conspicuous potential limpet predators, the zoarcid fish Pachycara gymninium Anderson and Peden (1988), the galatheid crab Munidopsis alvisca Williams (1988), and the buccinid snail Buccinum thermophilum Harasewych and Kantor (2002). Limpets from the predator-rich vent were most often scarred, a significant difference created by the high incidence of scars on small (<4 mm long) limpets in this sample. Collected with the limpets were small (median shell diameter 4.4 mm) buccinids. They, rather than the larger, more conspicuous mobile fishes and crabs are argued to be the shell-damaging predator. Deep-sea squids, Moroteuthis ingens and Gonatus antarcticus, were collected in the slope waters off the Falkland Islands and their reproductive systems preserved and investigated onshore. Changes in oocyte length-frequencies at maturation and spawning, and their fecundity were studied. These squids, as well as many other species, are characterised by a synchronous oocyte growth and ovulation. Oviducts are not used for ripe egg accumulation and consequently the universal scale of Lipinski (1979) cannot be applied to assign female maturity. M. ingens spawns near the bottom; its fecundity is 168–297 thousand eggs. Maximum egg size is 1.8–2.7 mm. G. antarcticus spawns midwater; its fecundity is 10–25 thousand eggs. Egg size is 3.2–3.3 mm. In M. ingens spawning takes place in the austral autumn and winter, in G. antarcticus—in austral winter. Our data and the literature data show that the so-called “synchronous ovulation” probably occurs in all deepwater squids. This pattern is very rare among fish, but is quite common among benthic octopods that brood their egg masses.  相似文献

Specimens of alvinellid polychaetes (Alvinella pompejana Desbruyères and Laubier, 1980 andA. caudata Desbruyères and Laubier, 1986) and their tubes were sampled from deep-sea hydrothermal vents at 13°N from the manned submersible Nautile during the Hydronaut cruise (October to November 1987) on the East Pacific Rise. Samples were subjected to bacterial analysis aboard the mother ship Nadir to detect bacteria involved in the nitrogen and sulphur cycles, in non-specific heterotrophic processes, and displaying resistance to selected heavy metals. Cultures were incubated at different temperatures under atmospheric and in situ (250 atm) pressures. Bacterial growth was observed in enrichment cultures for most metabolic types screened. Heavy-metal-resistant bacteria were also detected in many samples. No filamentous bacterial form was observed in the cultures. The results demonstrate a high metabolic diversity in episymbiotic flora, indicating that the worm (A. pompejana orA. caudata), its tube and its epiflora represent a complex micro-ecosystem.  相似文献

Deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems host both symbiotic and non-symbiotic invertebrates. The non-symbiotic vent fauna is generally assumed to rely on free-living chemoautotrophic bacteria as their main food source but other sources such as detritus have recently been suggested to be a part of the invertebrate diets. Little is known about how food availability influences the distribution of vent organisms on a small scale. In addition, the feeding ecology and role of small, often numerically dominant invertebrates, the meiofauna is poorly understood at vents. In this study, we used stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis to investigate the role of particulate detritus in the diets of macro- and meiobenthic invertebrates within three vent assemblages at Axial Volcano, Juan de Fuca Ridge, and Northeast Pacific. Particulate organic matter of a detrital origin became more important in the diet of invertebrates in assemblages typically associated with low-hydrothermal flow intensities. Meiobenthic species occupied several different feeding guilds and trophic levels in the assemblages investigated. We conclude that small-scale spatial variability in food sources is an important feature of vent food webs and that spatial patterns observed here and elsewhere are shaped by variations in hydrothermal discharge.  相似文献

The germination of ten plant species from the Iberian Peninsula was assessed along a water deficit gradient between -0. 1652 (moist) and -0.4988 MPa (dry) of osmotic potential, created by addition of increasing concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) to distilled water in which plants were grown hydroponically. The level and rate of germination of Daucus carota and Thapsia villosa significantly decreased with decreasing psi. Seeds of Dactylis glomerata and Dittrichia viscosa had positive germination responses to low osmotic potentials; germination of Epilobium hirsutum was not affected by osmotic potential. Germination of Medicago arabica, Cynosurus cristatus, Cistus ladanifer and Cistus albidus, was no favored by the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG). Germination of Foeniculum vulgare and Thapsia villosa was inhibited by PEG.  相似文献

The deep sea supports a diverse and highly endemic invertebrate fauna, the origin of which remains obscure. Little is known about geographic variation in deep-sea organisms or the evolutionary processes that promote population-level differentiation and eventual speciation. Sequence variation at the 16 S rDNA locus was examined in formalin-preserved specimens of the common upper bathyal rissoid Frigidoalvania brychia (Verrill, 1884) to examine its population genetic structure. The specimens came from trawl samples taken over 30 years ago at depths of 457-1,102 m at stations in the Northwest Atlantic south of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. Near the upper boundary of its bathymetric range (500 m), extremely divergent haplotypes comprising three phylogenetically distinct clades (average uncorrected sequence divergence among clades ~23%, ~3% within clades) were found at stations separated by a maximum distance of ~80 km, suggesting the presence of high levels of intraspecific divergence or the possibility of morphologically cryptic species. Only one of these clades was found at two stations in the mid- to lower part of F. brychia's depth distribution (800-1,100 m), suggesting lower clade diversity with increasing depth, although among-sample divergence, with a single exception, was minimal. One station was genetically divergent from all others sampled, containing a unique suite of haplotypes including two found only at this site. Steep vertical selective gradients, major oceanographic changes during the late Cenozoic, and habitat fragmentation by submarine canyons might have contributed to an upper bathyal region that is highly conducive to evolutionary change.  相似文献

In-situ measurement of chemolithotrophic and some heterotrophic microbial activities were made in the immediate vicinity of actively discharging hydrothermal vents of the Galápagos Rift region at depths of 2 500 to 2 600 m. The CO2-assimilation or chemosynthesis productivity in the emitted vent waters, freshly mixed with oxygenated ambient seawater of 2°C, was minor compared to the bacterial biomass produced within the subsurface vent system prior to emission. Uptake of acetate and glucose indicated the presence of mixotrophic or facultatively chemolithotrophic bacteria in the emitted vent waters in agreement with isolations. Demonstration of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase in cultures of thiobacilli isolated from these vent water supports the notion that chemoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are one of the sources of primary production in the form of particulate organic carbon for filtering organisms in the deep sea hydrothermal environment. The rates of bacterial metabolic activities in emitted vent water are too low for the amount of invertebrate biomass and the rate of its growth and maintenance. Therefore, the larger portion of chemosynthetic sustenance of deep sea vent ecosystems appears to be based on symbiotic associations between bacteria and invertebrates and on surface attached bacteria.  相似文献

A newly described species of shrimp, Rimicaris exoculata Williams and Rona, 1986, dominates the megafaunal community at two hydrothermal vent sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Behavioral observations and gut-content analyses indicate, that these shrimp ingest large amounts of sulfide particles from black smoker chimneys. We found no evidence for chemoautotrophic endosymbionts in R. exoculata, based on analyses of morphology, stable isotopes, lipopolysaccharides, and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) activity. Instead we suggest that the shrimp, are normal heterotrophs, grazing on free-living microorganisms associated with black smoker chimneys. We infer that high bacterial productivity is required to sustain populations of R. exoculata at these vent sites.  相似文献

Many species experience reproductive interference defined as interspecific mating interactions that reduce the fitness of individuals in at least one of the species. We examined reproductive interference among three cryptic amphipod species that co-occur in the vegetated zone of lakes. Because these animals form precopulatory pairs and males commonly have indiscriminant mating behavior, we predicted that (1) there would be interspecific pairing, (2) interspecific pairing would be more common when conspecifics were rare, and (3) interspecific pairing would be more common in species combinations where males are larger than females. Using color phenotypes to distinguish species, a novel discovery reported here, we conducted experiments to evaluate patterns of interspecific pairing. In a no-choice experiment (i.e., amphipods had access to mates of only one species), we observed a low rate (5 %) of interspecific pairing and 80 % of these cases involved males that were larger than females. In a second experiment where individuals had access to conspecific mates at varying relative abundance, only 0.04 % of the pairs observed were between heterospecifics, suggesting that the interspecific pairing observed in the no-choice experiment was an artifact of not having access to conspecific mates. Our results suggest that at least one sex has sufficient species-recognition abilities to circumvent the formation of interspecific pairs; therefore, reproductive interference may be minimal in these species.  相似文献

研究采用析因实验设计,探讨了培养基的水源、培养温度和生长pH等因素对喷口细菌生长繁殖的影响,初步探索了常压下东太平洋某海底喷口周围微氧耐压细菌的生长条件。样品培养10d后,对培养液中细菌量进行显微计数,实验数据用SPSS11.0统计软件中的方差分析程序进行处理。统计结果显示:在标准大气压下,从研究样品中获得最多细菌数的较优培养条件为:培养基水源为单蒸水;生长pH为7.60;培养温度为50℃。在该条件的培养液中细菌平均浓度达2.596×10个/mL。研究结果为进一步认识、鉴定与开发利用深海喷口周围细菌资源打下了基础。  相似文献

The present study examined the mode and timing of reproduction of poorly understood deep-water octocorals and the environmental factors that may influence their reproductive patterns. Data on reproductive characteristics of the octocoral Drifa glomerata (Alcyonacea: Nephtheidae) collected between 2004 and 2007 at ca. 100–330 m depth off Newfoundland and Labrador (eastern Canada) were compared among years, months and depth ranges. No male gonad was ever observed during the study. The ratio of fertile colonies possessing large pinkish polyps with oocytes/planulae was >50% throughout the year. The number of brooded planula larvae within a single fertile polyp varied between 1 and 10 for a total of approximately 40–3,000 in a whole colony. The size of oocytes and/or planulae was consistently greater in the polyps than in the branchlets, indicating that the development pathway of oocytes to planulae is from the branchlets to the polyps. Although larval production seemed to persist year round, the onset of major planulation events occurred in December–January of two consecutive years, when large mature planulae were released in correlation with the first increase of photoperiod and maximum temperature at 150 m. A second peak in planulation between April and early June followed the phytoplankton bloom. Seasonal trends were more apparent in colonies from <200 m, and the planula index varied among sampling depths and years. Larval release in a live colony under laboratory conditions occurred between January and June 2008, closely following predictions based on field samples.  相似文献

Prior studies of the hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), provided conflicting predictions about the dispersal ability and population structure of this highly specialized species. Analyses of morphological features associated with its larval shells revealed a feeding larval stage that might facilitate dispersal between ephemeral vent habitats. In contrast, an allozyme study revealed substantial genetic differentiation between samples taken from populations 2370 km apart on Galápagos Rift (Latitude 0°N) and the East Pacific Rise (13°N). To resolve the discrepancy between these studies, we examined allozyme and mitochondrial (mt) DNA variation in new samples from the same localities plus more recently discovered sites (9° and 11°N) along the East Pacific Rise. Although analysis of 26 enzyme-determining loci revealed relatively low levels of genetic variation within the five populations, no evidence existed for significant barriers to dispersal among populations. We estimated an average effective rate of gege flow (Nm) of 8 migrants per population per generation. Two common mtDNA variants predominated at relatively even frequencies in each population, and similarly provided no evidence for barriers to gene flow or isolation-by-distance across this species' known range. Larvae of this species appear to be capable of dispersing hundreds of kilometers along a continuous ridge system and across gaps separating non-contiguous spreading centers.  相似文献

The prodissoconch morphology of an unclassified mytilid from a hydrothermal vent on the Galápagos Rift indicates the presence of a planktotrophic larval stage with longrange dispersal capabilities. Recorded abyssal currents are probably sufficient to transport such larvae hundreds of kilometers. It is suggested that one or more aspects of the unusual biological or physico-chemical conditions (such as high microbial densities, elevated water temperatures, and hydrogen sulfide concentrations) encountered at vents, provide a stimulus to larval settlement. Such a behavioral response, perhaps coupled with a gregarious settling response, would provide a means of concentrating relatively sedentary organisms in and around these restricted, geographically isolated regions.  相似文献

Species endemic to deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems have disjunct distributions imposed by the island-like arrangement of their specialized habitats. Using allozyme electrophoresis, we examined genetic population structure of the hydrothermal vent amphipod Ventiella sulfuris Barnard and Ingram, 1990. Samples from five sites along the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and two along the Galapagos Rift were collected in 1990 and 1988, respectively. Variability, based on 12 enzyme loci, was relatively high (proportion of polymorphic loci whose most common allele not greater than 0.95 in frequency) =41.6%; (mean heterozygosity) =0.158] compared with shallow-water marine and freshwater amphipods, and similar to the deep-sea lysianassid Eurythenes gryllus. Genetic divergence among populations spread along a cöntiguous rift axis (i.e., EPR) was low [Nei's genetic distance (D) ranged from <0.001 to 0.018]. Genetic tructure analysis suggests that along a contiguous ridge axis migration occurs in a stepping stone manner and is unconstrained by distances as great as 1200 km (migration rate, , ranged from 1.9 to 67.8 ind. generation–1). However, genetic divergence between populations on disjunct ridge axes was extremely high (D ranged from 0.438 to 0.476). Most of the variance in gene frequencies was due to the differences between the major subpopulations inhabiting the two distinct ridge axes, EPR and Galapagos Rift. Apparently, very little migration and gene flow occur between these major subpopulations (M1). This level of genetic divergence may be sufficient to justity separation of EPR and Galapagos Rift populations at the species level. Futher analyses of morphological characters is required before taxonomic status can be assigned.  相似文献

Dirivultid copepods are among the most successful organisms at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, as this family includes 50 morphologically described species. We studied COI diversity of some species in various geographical areas and vent fluid regimes, in order to gain a better understanding of true species diversity, dispersal strategies, and evolution. DNA taxonomy revealed the same entities as described with morphological characters. No cryptic species were detected. With the help of COI analyses, it was possible to identify a new species and match the dimorphic sexes of another species. The geographical distance between vents, as well as the extreme physico-chemical environment, are thought to affect the gene flow of fauna. We could not detect any sequence differences within species among different geographical scales (up to 2,000 km) or different vent fluid regimes. We suggest that Dirivultidae have relatively high gene flow between vents and are able to disperse relatively easy along ridges. Further, they have a broad physiological tolerance and thus might not have undergone speciation in response to heterogeneity caused by vent fluids.  相似文献
