Brood desertion is a life history strategy that allows parents to minimize costs related to parental care and increase their future fecundity. The harvestman Neosadocus maximus is an interesting model organism to study costs and benefits of temporary brood desertion because females abandon their clutches periodically and keep adding eggs to their clutches for some weeks. In this study, we tested if temporary brood desertion (a) imposes a cost to caring females by increasing the risk of egg predation and (b) offers a benefit to caring females by increasing fecundity as a result of increased foraging opportunities. With intensive field observations followed by a model selection approach, we showed that the proportion of consumed eggs was very low during the day and it was not influenced by the frequency of brood desertion. The proportion of consumed eggs was higher at night and it was negatively related to the frequency of brood desertion. However, frequent brood desertion did not result in higher fecundity, measured both as the number of eggs added to the current clutch and the probability of laying a second clutch over the course of the reproductive season. Considering that harvestmen are sensitive to dehydration, brood desertion during the day may attenuate the physiological stress of remaining exposed on the vegetation. Moreover, since brood desertion is higher during the day, when egg predation pressure is lower, caring females could be adjusting their maternal effort to the temporal variation in predation risk, which is regarded as the main cost of brood desertion in ectotherms. 相似文献

Costs and benefits of brood desertion in female kentish plovers,Charadrius alexandrinus 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Female kentish plovers Charadrius alexandrinus typically desert their broods after the chicks hatch, i.e. 1–4 weeks before the chicks fledge or become independent. In this paper we investigate the costs and benefits of desertion for females. Desertion incurs a cost for females: following desertion chick survival in broods is lower (0.95 +- 0.02 day–1) than before the female deserts (0.98 +- 0.01 day–1). We investigated several possible causes for reduced brood survival by comparing characteristics of broods before and after desertion (controlling for differences in brood age). After desertion males increased the time they spent foraging and they tended to reduce time spent brooding chicks. Increased mortality of chicks may occur in deserted broods because following desertion (1) males spend less time alert in vigilance behaviour than before desertion, (2) they attend the chicks from greater distances, and (3) they show greater distraction display distances (in response to human intruders). Growth or development of chicks, measured by weight gain and tarsus length, was not different before and after desertion. Females gain two potential benefits from desertion: (1) they may remate and produce a second brood within the same breeding season or (2) they may enhance their probability of surviving to breed in a subsequent season. At least 27% of female kentish plovers that deserted remated and renested in the same season in this study. In contrast, we found no evidence that brood desertion increased the survival of females: there was no difference in local survival rate (return rate) for females deserting before or after 6 days brood age. These results clearly demonstrate that female kentish plovers that desert their offspring prior to fledging incur costs, but we suggest that there is a trade-off with the potential benefits gained by remating and making a second breeding attempt in the same season. 相似文献

The effects of the permanent removal of the canopy-forming alga Fucus serratus was studied in terms of both functioning and diversity on a mid–low rocky shore ecosystem in the south-west English Channel (48°N 43.686′, 3°W 59.282′). Ecosystem functioning was examined as net or gross primary productivity (NPP or GPP) and respiration (Resp) measured through CO2 fluxes. Diversity was examined as number and composition of species. Measurements were performed in situ, during emersion times, without altering target assemblages. The experiment was designed with two treatments [control (C) or canopy removed (CR)] and five replicates, and was conducted over an 18-month period (from February 2006 to August 2007) to integrate the seasonal variability. The mean GPP and Resp were severely reduced in CR treatment compared to control throughout the survey. The mean NPP was not affected at first, due to the development of opportunistic green algae, but was drastically reduced after 9 months of experiment. The canopy removal affected neither the number of species nor their distribution among trophic groups, and the algal community was only slightly affected. The abundance and biomass of mobile invertebrates, however, were greatly reduced in the absence of canopy. This indicates an important effect of the dominant alga on the higher trophic levels of the community. At this tidal level, the canopy did not seem to affect the community by dampening the environmental stress but by providing food, habitat or both. 相似文献

The assessment of relevant spatial scales at which ecological processes occur is of special importance for a thorough understanding
of ecosystem functioning. In coastal ecosystems, the variability of trophic interactions has been studied at different spatial
scales, but never at scales from centimetres to metres. In the present study, we investigated the link between habitat structure
and small-scale variability of food web functioning on intertidal boulder field ecosystems. Two microhabitats, boulder-top
and boulder-bottom, were considered, and the trophic ecology of invertebrate consumers was studied using stable isotope tracers.
We found for two of the main suspension feeders of northern Atlantic rocky shores (the sponges Halichondria panicea and Hymeniacidon sanguinea) consistent 15N enrichment for individuals sampled under boulders, suggesting that these consumers relied on different trophic resource
according to the microhabitat inhabited, at a centimetre scale. The high δ15N signatures found underneath boulders suggested higher use of highly decomposed organic matter in this microhabitat. The
isotopic difference between the two microhabitats decreased in higher trophic level consumers, which likely foraged at a spatial
scale including both microhabitats. Finally, our results reveal that in highly heterogeneous habitats such as boulder fields,
trophic interactions are likely to vary strongly in space, which should be considered in future researches. The link between
habitat physical structure and food web variability might also contribute to the high biological diversity characterizing

The midlittoral zone at Paitilla Beach, Panama, Is occupied by a group of organisms closely associated with Tetraclita stalactifera panamensis. Upon death, this cirripede provides housing for a number of species bound by common substrata and interacting with each other due to their close physical proximity; the faunistic group associated with each barnacle qualifies then, as a small, well-defined community which represents a subsample of the more comprehensive midlittoral community dominated by T. stalactifera panamensis. In patches where it is abundant, T. stalactifera panamensis occupies 28% of the surface area available. It has a relative abundance of only 1% of the specimens found in the zone, but all the other 95 species (with an average of 26, 810 individuals/m2) identified from the area are associated either with the parietal canals, or the external or internal surfaces of T. stalactifera panamensis tests. Each one of these structures represents a habitat which provides surface for attachment, shelter, or both, to 37 species of polychaetes, 32 of mollusks, 20 of crustaceans, 3 of actiniarians, 2 of pycogonids, 2 of sipunculans and an unknown number of tanaid, nemertean and turbellarian species. The single most diverse space-niche is represented by the parietal canals (H=0.783), occupied mostly by polychaetes. dead barnacles harbor an average of 131 individuals per test, which compose a fauna of higher diversity (H=0.678) than that associated with live barnacles (H=0.163). The latter contain 53 specimens per test on the average. Although there is considerable overlapping of species associated with the different T. stalactifera panamensis space-niches, mollusks are clearly more abundant on internal surfaces, polychaetes in parietal, canals; Balanus spp. on external surfaces, and anemones at the base of the parapet on the external surfaces of the tests. Over 220 species of macro-invertebrates were identified from the rocky intertidal at Paitilla. Most of the species are concentrated in the lower (157 species, 1824 specimens/m2) and midlittoral (96 species, 26, 810 specimens/m2) intertidal zones. Splash zone is depauperate (6 species, 1578 specimens/m2). Of the entire fauna identified from the intertidal, 73 species (33%) occur in more than one zone and 147 (67%) are restricted to a particular belt. This last category of zone-restricted species breaks down into 42% for the lower intertidal, 17% for the midlittoral, 6% for the intermediate zone, and 2% for the splash zone. 相似文献

Parental care may be costly to parents because it decreases resources allocated to self-maintenance and may thus reduce survival and future reproductive success. An inter-sexual conflict may exist in animals with obligatory bi-parental care, such as birds of prey, in which females incubate and brood, whereas males provision food for their families. We analysed 29 years of data (1981–2009) from a study population of Tengmalm’s owls Aegolius funereus in western Finland to examine the occurrence and timing of brood desertion and sequential polyandry, and recorded a total of 1,123 monogamous and 12 polyandrous females. These data were supplemented with the 29-year nationwide Finnish ringing data, which included 11,590 monogamous and 20 polyandrous females. The 12 polyandrous females started egg-laying in their two nests at intervals of 54–68 days (mean 60 days), thus deserting their first broods when the age of oldest young averaged 21 days. Thirty-two polyandrous females re-mated and raised a second brood at a median distance of 4.5 km (range 1–196 km). These females produced 79% more eggs, 93% more hatchlings and 73% more fledglings than did females that laid simultaneously but remained monogamous. Our results show that not only males, but also females of altricial species with bi-parental care can increase their fitness by deserting their first brood when it will be cared for by the males. Earlier studies have shown that male owls can increase their lifetime reproductive success by simultaneous polygyny, and we suggest that an inter-sexual “tug-of-war” over bi-parental care exists in Tengmalm’s owls. 相似文献

Relationships between community structure and environmental factors were sought through multivariate analysis (quantification analysis and correspondence analysis) of data obtained in a benthic macrofauna survey of a rocky low-tide platform located at Usujiri, southern Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 21 species were found. However, their annual mean abundance was dominated by only a few species. Three dominant species of the platform (Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula andSeptifer virgatus) accounted for an average of 92% of total abundance. Three environmental factors with associated species groups were examined. Among them, micro-topographic characteristics and wave action defined the main correspondence variables.L. brevicula was a characteristic member of the boulder and sheltered field.S. virgatus was the dominant species of sloped surfaces.C. challengeri, S. virgatus, andMytilus edulis were characteristic of ledge or bench environments. Finally,C. challengeri was characteristic of nip and high wave-exposure environments, given its exclusive appearences in these locations. However, as the degree of exposure depends on the scale of wash through the platform, it is directly limited by the microtopographic properties of low-tide platforms. Specific environmental influences such as exposure and height above the datum-plane were rather disapparent. Any overall effects on the community structure were synthesized by those of microtopography. After complete consideration, it was concluded that the community structure of the macrobenthos in this low-tide platform was found to be primarily under the influence of microtopographic characteristics. 相似文献

We characterized the structure and functioning of the food web associated to an intertidal rocky shore in the harbour of Brest
(Western Brittany, France), through a seasonal δ13C and δ15N survey. The dominance of benthic-derived organic matter, and particularly resuspended sediment, in the local pool of suspended
organic matter, is highlighted. This benthic-derived organic matter dominates the diet of filter-feeders, including a certain
degree of selectivity displayed by various taxa belonging to this trophic group. The food web structure appeared very stable
temporally, which suggested the dominance of mixed diets, rather than the consumption of pure sources. It was constituted
of 4 trophic levels, including a large diversity of predators, likely favoured by the diversity of microhabitats that characterize
this intertidal habitat. From our results, the trophic functioning of this peri-urban rocky shore community does not appear
functionally simplified as previously reported for other anthropized and/or artificial rocky ecosystems. We suggest that the
topological complexity of rocky habitats, including a diversity of microhabitats, might be responsible of the important animal
diversity, in spite of the anthropogenic disturbances characterizing this peri-urban area. 相似文献

Quantitative data on plants and animals from 20 transects of the eulittoral zone in 8 fjords of sub-arctic east Iceland were analysed by a number of classification and ordination techniques. Field work was carried out during two periods of spring tides in June and July 1987. The study was restricted to gently sloping stable bedrock, but transects were otherwise randomly chosen. Species composition was strongly influenced by the relative position of the transects along the length of the fjords. Species richness increased from heads towards mouths. Increased temperature fluctuations towards inner parts of fjords are suggested as an explanation for these patterns, while salinity is unlikely to be a critical factor. The analyses also indicate that degree of exposure, as measured both by a physically derived index and by a simple biological index, is an important factor in structuring these eulittoral communities, although affecting species richness only slightly, if at all. Classification of transects results in a number of community types which, however, are not well defined. A classification based on the presence/absence of three canopy-forming fucoids yields groups of transects differing in species composition and in degree of exposure. The rocky eulittoral communities of the fjords of eastern Iceland resemble those of northern Norway, but differ in that several key species of the latter communities are missing, probably largely due to the isolation of Iceland. 相似文献

A comparison of macrofaunal and meiofaunal distribution and standing stock across a rocky shore,with an estimate of their productivities 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In 1984 and 1985 algal, macrofaunal and meiofaunal standing stocks were estimated on a exposed rocky shore along the west coast of False Bay, South Africa, using comparable, area-based sampling techniques. The shore supported a rich growth of algae, particularly in summer, when a maximum standing crop of 403 g m-2 was recorded in the low shore. In winter, the largest component of macrofaunal biomass comprised the filter-feeding barnacle Tetraclita serrata, which attained 75 g m-2 in the middle balanoid; but as a result of late recruitment and high mortality of this species, the summer shore was dominated by herbivorous gastropods, particularly Patella cochlear, which attained a maximum biomass of 66 g m-2 on the low shore. Meiofaunal numbers and biomass were closely correlated to the distribution of algal turfs and associated trapped sediments. Numerically, the most important components of the meiofauna were nematodes and copepods, while the biomass was more evenly shared among foraminifera, minute gastropods, copepods and insect larvae. Numbers and biomass peaked in the lower balanoid during winter (1.9×106 individuals, or 8.5 g m-2). Macrofauna:meiofauna numbers and biomass ratios are presented for each zone and the distribution patterns discussed in relation to the conditons in each. Numerically, meiofauna exceed macrofauna by an overall ratio of 1:391, with values ranging from 1:556 in the lower balanoid to 1:18 in the Littorina zone. Macrofaunal biomass exceeds that of meiofauna in all zones by an overall ratio of 10:1, but values range from 2.1:1 in the upper balanoid to 48:1 in the middle balanoid. By incorporating turnover ratios extrapolated from the literature, mean annual productivity ratios have been calculated. These indicate that macrofauna account for 75% of total secondary production and meiofauna for 25%. Failure to incorporate meiofauna in analyses of energy flow on rocky shore ecosystems would thus lead to considerable errors. The possible trophic role of meiofauna in such systems is discussed. 相似文献

Human-induced eutrophication, resulting in algal blooms and increased water turbidity, is an alarming problem in aquatic systems.
Here, we experimentally tested the impact of algal turbidity on parental care, egg fanning, and time in the nest, in the sand
goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, a fish with uniparental male care. We allowed males to care for their eggs in either clear water or water made turbid by
planktonic algae. In the early brood cycle, males fanned their eggs less in turbid than in clear water, but this difference
disappeared later. Despite decreased care, egg survival was higher in turbid conditions, indicating that early fanning may
partly be redundant for egg survival and perhaps used more as courtship. Males also spent more time out of their nest in turbid
water, perhaps as a means to encounter additional females under conditions of low visibility. 相似文献

Intertidal rocky shores are characterized by vertical zonation that results from the interplay between environmental conditions, organism physiology, and species interactions. Metabolism of intertidal organisms is highly variable between species and it changes with vertical position along the intertidal gradient. The present study aimed to quantify the carbon metabolism of nine intertidal rocky shore gastropods, in order to clarify their respective roles in carbon production during emersion and immersion. The influences of monthly temperature variation and tidal level were tested for each species. Analyses were performed in the laboratory using the infrared gas analyzer method for measuring aerial respiration rates, and the dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity technique for measuring aquatic respiration rate and calcification. Hourly carbon fluxes were calculated for the mean annual temperature of 13 °C measured in both air and underwater in the study area. Respiration rates were similar for emersion (8–25 μmol CO2 g AFDW?1 h?1) and immersion (10–23 μmol DIC g AFDW?1 h?1). For all species, underwater respiration fluxes were more influenced by monthly temperature variation than by air fluxes, probably as an adaptation to the rapid changes occurring during emersion. Calcification was an important factor influencing annual carbon fluxes for all studied species; every species showed different calcification rates according to its size and position on the intertidal zone. Annual carbon emissions were calculated using the mean immersion/emersion time of each species. Intertidal gastropod carbon emission was primarily influenced by body biomass and their vertical position within the intertidal zone. 相似文献

The littoral zone of temperate rocky shores is normally dominated by perennial macroalgae (e.g. Fucus, Ascophyllum, Laminaria), but nutrient enrichment and/or permanently decreased wave action may lead to structural community changes from dominance
of perennials to increased amounts of annual opportunistic species (mainly green algae). Macroalgal biomass, diversity and
production as well as relationships between the two latter were studied using Solbergstrand’s rocky shore mesocosms in SE
Norway in connection with a long-term experimental manipulation of nutrient addition and wave action (high and low levels
of both factors applied in a crossed way to eight outdoor basins). After more than 2 years of experimental treatment, the
total standing stock of macroalgae was larger in low nutrient than in high nutrient treatments as well as in high wave compared
to low wave treatments (in autumn only). For macroalgal functional groups, bushy and filamentous brown and filamentous red
algae were generally favoured by low nutrient concentrations, while annual filamentous and sheet-like green algae were stimulated
by the nutrient enrichment. There was only one significant interaction between nutrient enrichment and wave action (for brown
filamentous algae in autumn) and also only one significant main effect of the wave treatment (for bushy brown algae in autumn).
Surprisingly, the high nutrient treatments supported a higher diversity of macroalgae, whereas the low nutrient treatments
generally showed higher production rates. Moreover, significantly negative correlations were found between macroalgal diversity
and primary productivity in both summer and autumn. This study shows that it is the biological components of the communities
subjected to external forcing (nutrient addition or decreased wave action) that regulate production and this contradicts the
common misperception that resource production in natural systems simply can be fast-forwarded by fertilization. The negative
relationships between diversity and productivity, although a consequence of unexpected results for diversity and production,
are also novel and hint towards species identities having more important functional consequences than general species dominance
patterns and the amount of species per se. These results also emphasise the context dependency of findings within the field
of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. 相似文献

Understanding variation in physiological adaptations to thermal stress is vital when investigating intertidal species?? distribution patterns. The thermal sensitivities of two limpets, Cellana grata and C. toreuma, differed in accordance with their vertical distributions. Cardiac performance was maintained at higher temperatures (~47°C) for the high-zone C. grata than the mid-zone C. toreuma (~42°C). At 40°C, C. grata maintained regular heart function for ~4?h, while heart function of C. toreuma decreased rapidly. Heat shock protein expression revealed that C. toreuma had two constitutive isoforms, Hsp77 and Hsp72, and C. grata one inducible form, Hsp75, which was upregulated at 40°C, suggesting C. grata has a more effective heat shock response than C. toreuma. The temperature-adaptive differences in cardiac thermal tolerance and Hsp expression match observed differences in thermally induced mortalities with the onset of summer and may help predict differential effects of climate change on the two congeners. 相似文献

The importance of species interactions and recruitment variability was examined during the first year and a half of primary succession (1988–1989) on an exposed rocky seashore near Halifax, Nova Scotia. Previous work suggested that emergent rock on these shores is normally dominated by fucoid rockweeds because predatory whelks control the sessile animal competitors, mussels and barnacles, and because herbivorous littorinids control ephemeral algal competitors. Abundances of all species except seasonal ephemeral algae were very small throughout this experiment and we found no significant effects of carnivory, herbivory, plant-animal competition or plant-plant competition. A slight facilitation of Fucus recruitment is attributed to a thin mat of ephemeral, blue-green algae. Very few other studies have directly manipulated intertidal ephemeral algae. As primary succession may be very rare in this assemblage, these results may be specific to these circumstances, but they highlight the varying importance of species interactions with variable recruitment. In particular, it appears that variations in recruitment success may be important to community structure, even when recruitment is not limited by propagule supply. The scale of the study also provides insight into successional processes occurring after the recent, extensive ice-scour of exposed seashores in this region. 相似文献

This study reports on the distribution of polychaete assemblages along a depth gradient from 5 to 25 m, along a stretch of rocky coast near Otranto (South Adriatic sea, Italy). Three depths were sampled in May and November 2000. At each depth three sites (about 100 m apart) were sampled by scraping off three replicate quadrats of 20×20 cm. The experimental design enabled identification of across- and along-shore spatial patterns of variation of polychaete assemblages. A total of 4,168 specimens, belonging to 152 taxa were collected. Multivariate analysis showed that the polychaete assemblages differed significantly among depths with the clearest differences between the shallowest sites (5 m) and the deeper ones (15–25 m). A considerable source of variation among sites at each level of the shore was also exhibited by the analyses, with the greatest differences among sites within depths recorded at 5 m. The species most contributing to the differentiation of assemblages among depths and sites within each depth were identified. Some potential causes of the observed differences are hypothesized and discussed. Summary Data from a 15-month field study of the capped langur monkey, Presbytis pileata, in Bangladesh indicate that allomothering behavior is restricted to particular female-infant dyads. Primary allomothers were all parous adult females; nulliparous females rarely allo-mothered, Newborn infants were transferred from the mother to other females within a short time of birth, as reported for some other colobine species, but over the first 3 months of life each neonate's contact with nonmothers was largely restricted to a single allomother in each of five study groups. Capped langur mothers with newborn infants spent more time feeding when the infant was being allomothered than when it was in the mother's care. The model of allomothering as a selfish behavior by nulliparous or pregnant females used to enhance maternal skills at the expense of mothers is not supported by this study. Rather, allomothering may have adaptive significance as altruistic behavior among group females, in that it enables lactating females to increase feeding time. Capped langur allomothering is best interpreted as a low-cost behavior that can benefit recipients that may or may not be related.

Animals can attain fitness benefits by maintaining a positive net energy balance, including costs of movement during resource acquisition and the profits from foraging. Subterranean rodent burrowing provides an excellent system in which to examine the effects of movement costs on foraging behavior because it is energetically expensive to excavate burrows. We used an individual-based modeling approach to study pocket gopher foraging and its relationship to digging cost, food abundance, and food distribution. We used a unique combination of an individual-based foraging-behavior model and an energetic model to assess survival, body mass dynamics, and burrow configurations. Our model revealed that even the extreme cost of digging is not as costly as it appears when compared to metabolic costs. Concentrating digging in the area where food was found, or area-restricted search (ARS), was the most energetically efficient digging strategy compared to a random strategy. Field data show that natural burrow configurations were more closely approximated by the animals we modeled using ARS compared to random diggers. By using behavior and simple physiological principles in our model, we were able to observe realistic body mass dynamics and recreate natural movement patterns. 相似文献
