The nutritional status of needles from Sitka spruce, Norway spruce and Scots pine in a total of 108 stands was assessed. There was little evidence of nutritional deficiency, although potassium levels were frequently quite low. Analysis of some heavy metals (lead and copper) failed to reveal any likely toxicity problems. Sulphur, nitrogen and iron levels in/on the foliage were all related to various measures of sulphur and nitrogen pollution, determined using improved deposition models that take into account cloud deposition and the seeder-feeder mechanism. The analysis strongly suggested that direct air pollution has a greater effect on sulphur, nitrogen and iron foliar analyses than indirect pollution (wet deposition). The relationships were identified for levels of pollution that were generally lower than those seen in traditional gradient studies.  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition and canopy exchange processes in heathland ecosystems   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
The aims of the present study were to determine canopy exchange processes and to quantify total atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen in heathland. The study was carried out in dry inland heath vegetation, dominated by Calluna vulgaris, in two nature reserves in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Atmospheric deposition was determined with throughfall-stemflow measurements, adapted for low vegetation. Throughflow measurements (sum of throughfall and stemflow) in artificial Calluna canopies showed co-deposition of SOx and NHy upon heathland vegetation. In the real Calluna canopy, a significant part of the deposited ammonia/ammonium was directly assimilated by the Calluna shoots, especially in wet periods. The concentrations of potassium, calcium and magnesium in throughflow, after passage through the Calluna canopy, increased significantly compared with bulk precipitation. The amount of cations lost from the canopy were in good agreement with the observed ammonium uptake by the Calluna. A field experiment demonstrated that losses of the above-mentioned cations can be doubled by application of ammonium sulphate. It was shown that interception deposition is an important component of the atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen upon Calluna heathland; bulk precipitation amounted to only c. 35-40% of total atmospheric input. Total atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen in the investigated heathlands was 1.5-2.1 (27-33 kg S ha(-1) yr(-1)) and 2.1-3.1 kmolc ha(-1) yr(-1) (30-45 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1)), respectively. It is concluded that the present atmospheric nitrogen deposition is a continuous threat for the existence of heathlands in Western Europe.  相似文献

Analysis of Acer pseudoplatanus L. (sycamore) tree rings using ICP-MS was used to assess the impact of metal deposition on trees growing in the vicinity of a metal refinery at Prescot, north-west England compared to a reference site at Croxteth 6 km distant receiving minimal deposition. No difference in tree growth between sites was recorded. Large reductions in Cu and Cd deposition since the late 1970s was accompanied by a steep decline in Cd concentrations in the outer rings in trees close to the refinery. A similar reduction in Cu concentrations was less apparent due to a tendency for Cu to increase in the outer rings. Zinc and Ni were higher in xylem at Prescot compared to Croxteth. There was no trend in Zn concentrations at either site although Ni concentrations increased in trees close to the refinery after 1982. Manganese concentrations in xylem were much higher at Prescot; Mn levels declined until the late 1970s and then increased slightly in later years interspersed by large concentration peaks within individual years during the 1980s. There was little change in Mn concentrations in trees at Croxteth during this period. Calcium, Mg and Sr concentrations remained steady or declined slightly in rings formed since 1965 in trees at Croxteth. Concentrations of Ca, Mg and Sr were higher in rings formed prior to the mid 1970s in trees at Prescot, but declined steadily after this period, although peaks in concentrations of each element were recorded in individual years during the 1980s. Phosphorous concentrations in rings increased towards the cambium at Croxteth, although P levels decreased in rings formed after 1982 at Prescot. No difference in K concentrations between sites was recorded. Lead concentrations in xylem at both sites declined steadily in rings formed after 1970, although concentrations were higher at the reference site. Analysis of individual sycamore tree rings appears to record short-term changes in pollution episodes, with little lateral movement of elements occurring. It is suggested that changes in element concentrations in trees close to the refinery are a result of reduced metal deposition combined with increased soil acidity due to reduced buffering capacity of metal ions in rainfall.  相似文献

A field study near the copper smelter of a large industrial complex examined air pollution effects on vegetation and soil parameters in Cama?ari (northeast Brazil). Close to the smelter, soil pH-value was lower and total acidity as well as organic carbon contents were higher compared with a site far from the source and two reference sites. The acidification of top soil particularly and the drastically enhanced plant-available copper concentrations were caused by atmospheric deposition. High sulphur and copper deposition significantly reduced microbial biomass and altered functional diversity of soil microorganisms (arylsulphatase and xylanase). Large accumulations of sulphur, arsenic and copper were detected in mango leaves (Mangifera indica) growing downwind from the smelter suggesting potential food chain-mediated risk.  相似文献

Foliage dust contains heavy metal that may have harmful effects on human health. The elemental contents of tree leaves and foliage dust are especially useful to assess air environmental pollution. We studied the elemental concentrations in foliage dust and leaves of Acer pseudoplatanus along an urbanization gradient in Vienna, Austria. Samples were collected from urban, suburban and rural areas. We analysed 19 elements in both kind of samples: aluminium, barium, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphor, sulphur, strontium and zinc. We found that the elemental concentrations of foliage dust were significantly higher in the urban area than in the rural area for aluminium, barium, iron, lead, phosphor and selenium. Elemental concentrations of leaves were significantly higher in urban than in rural area for manganese and strontium. Urbanization changed significantly the elemental concentrations of foliage dust and leaves and the applied method can be useful for monitoring the environmental load.  相似文献

In a Scots pine forest the throughfall deposition and the chemical composition of the soil solution was monitored since 1984. (Inter)national legislation measures led to a reduction of the deposition of nitrogen and sulphur. The deposition of sulphur has decreased by approximately 65%. The total mineral-nitrogen deposition has decreased by ca. 25%, which is mainly due to a reduction in ammonium-N deposition (−40%), since nitrate-N deposition has increased (+50%). The nitrogen concentration in the upper mineral soil solution at 10 cm depth has decreased, leading to an improved nutritional balance, which may result in improved tree vitality. In the drainage water at 90 cm depth the fluxes of NO3 and SO42− have decreased, resulting in a reduced leeching of accompanying base cations, thus preserving nutrients in the ecosystem. It may take still several years, however, before this will meet the prerequisite of a sustainable ecosystem.  相似文献

The use of dendrochemistry for monitoring historical changes in trace metal deposition and mobilisation of metals in soils is evaluated. In experimental studies, mobilisation of trace metals in surface soil following deliberate acidification was recorded in sugar maple (Acer saccharum) tree-rings with minimal lateral movement between rings. Furthermore, positive correlations between wood (3 year section 1993-95) and foliar chemistry (mean concentration 1993-95) were found for Cd and Zn, but not for Cu and Ni, showing that mobility up the tree bole differs between metals. Even so, substantial lateral movement of elements between rings occurs in some species. Stable Pb isotope ratios in tree-rings were used to show that sacred fir (Abies religeosa) is not a useful monitor of Pb deposition because Pb accumulates in the heartwood. Numerous sophisticated analytical techniques are now used in dendrochemical studies, including laser ablation sampling in conjunction with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry that enable the multi-element analysis of extremely small tree-rings with low detection limits. Clearly, not all tree species are suitable for dendrochemical studies, but if careful sampling strategies are used and suitable tree species are chosen, the chemical analysis of tree-rings can provide information concerning historical changes in soil and atmospheric trace metal levels unavailable from any other source.  相似文献

The EMEP/MSC-W routine model for long-range atmospheric transport of sulphur and nitrogen includes a correction for the unresolved sub-grid-scale deposition in emission grid-squares. A constant fraction of the emissions is assumed to be directly deposited inside the first grid-square. Experiments have been performed to estimate the effects of using factors which vary with emission height and meteorological conditions. Results indicate that the constant local deposition factor used for sulphur dioxide in the routine model, is an overestimate, in particular for high-level emission sources. The change in annual deposition caused by the new local deposition factor for sulphur dioxide, is most clearly seen as a decreased deposition in the grid-squares with the largest emissions such as due for the former German Democratic Republic. The amount of this decrease strongly depends on the source height distribution. With the presently available emission data, a decrease of maximum 36% can be expected in individual grid squares. In grid-squares dominated by transboundary deposition, the increase is typically lower than 10%.  相似文献

Dry deposition of gases and particles to forests is influenced by factors influencing the turbulent transport, such as wind speed, tree height, canopy closure, LAI, etc. as well as by factors influencing surface condition, such as precipitation, relative humidity, global radiation, etc. In this paper, an overview of these factors is given and it is shown which are the most important determining temporal and spatial variation of dry deposition of sodium and sulphur. Furthermore, it is evaluated how well current deposition models are able to describe the temporal and spatial variation in dry deposition. It is concluded that the temporal variation is not modelled well enough, because of limited surface-wetness exchange parameterisations. The influence of forest characteristics are modelled reasonably well, provided enough data describing the forests and the spatial variation in concentration is available. For Europe these data are not available. The means to decrease the atmospheric deposition through forest management is discussed.  相似文献

燃料燃烧过程是大气污染物的重要来源之一,对人体健康、空气质量和气候变化产生非常重要的影响。以62台燃油锅炉(≤10.5 MW)的燃料特性分析数据和SO2排放实测数据为基础,通过统计分析方法,研究了燃油燃烧过程中燃油硫含量S和过量空气系数α对硫的转化率、SO2排放因子和排放浓度的影响,获得了基于燃料消耗量、燃料发热量的SO2排放因子EFCEFH以及SO2标态折算浓度CSO2与硫含量S间的关联式。结果表明,在过量空气系数α>1的燃油燃烧过程中,EFCEFHCSO2与燃油硫含量S呈现出显著的线性正相关性,而与过量空气系数α无关,其关系式分别为:EFC=18.86602×S,EFH=443.78751×S ,CSO2=1 509.28337×S;硫转化率η和基于燃料硫含量的SO2排放因子EFS则与燃油硫含量S和过量空气系数α无关,其平均值分别为96.3%和1.93 kg/kg。  相似文献

The iron content was studied in the epiphytic lichens Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. and Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf, in the terricolous lichens Cladina sp. and Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd., and in pine bark collected from 31 sites in Finland. There appeared to be differences between lichen species, epiphytes having generally higher concentrations. The iron content of H. physodes was highly significantly correlated (p<0.001) with its sulphur content, reflecting the relations of these elements in precipitation. The highly significant correlations between the iron and titanium contents indicated differences of the phorophytes. The iron/sulphur ratio of H. physodes on pine was 1.3 and on birch 1.4 and iron/titanium ratios were 10.4 and 11.3 respectively. The iron content of Cladina sp. showed highly significant parallel correlations (p<0.001) with its sulphur and titanium contents. The iron/titanium ratio decreased from 9.6 to 8.2 when the iron content increased by 95%, the sulphur content being equal. The iron/titanium ratio of Cladina sp. was nearly identical to that of P. furfuracea. The relation between iron and sulphur, and the fraction of soluble and insoluble iron in precipitation versus lichens and pine bark were considered. Emissions of a precursor of acidity in precipitation, sulphur dioxide (SO2), declined in the UK and the EU (15) by 71% and 72%, respectively, between 1986 and 2001, while nitrous oxide emissions declined by about 40%. Acidity in UK precipitation and the deposition of sulphate in precipitation halved during this period, but reductions were larger in the English Midlands than at the west coast and in high rainfall areas (>2000 mm). There is evidence that the smaller reductions in sulphur deposition in the west and south are due in part to shipping sources of SO2. Reductions in sulphur dry deposition (74%) are larger than in wet deposition (45%), due to changes in the canopy resistance to dry deposition. For reduced nitrogen, there has been a small (10%) reduction in emissions and deposition, while for oxidized nitrogen, a substantial reduction in emissions (40%) occurred but wet deposition of nitrate changed by less than 10%.  相似文献

This preliminary study investigated the effects of enhanced nitrogen (NH4NO3 at 48 kg ha(-1) y(-1)), sulphur (Na2SO4 at 50 kg ha(-1) y(-1)), acidified nitrogen and sulphur (H2SO4 + NH4NO3) at pre-stated doses (pH 2.5), and acidified nitrogen and sulphur deposition at double these doses on the ectomycorrhizal community associated with a 13-year-old Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) forest. Sulphur deposition had little impact on below ground ectomycorrhizal diversity, but stimulated sporocarp production. Nitrogen inputs increased below ground colonisation compared to acidified nitrogen and sulphur, largely due to an increase in Tylospora fibrillosa colonisation. Sporocarp production and ectomycorrhizal root colonisation by Lactarius rufus were reduced in the nitrogen treated plots. These observations suggest that nitrogen deposition to a young plantation may suppress ectomycorrhizal fungi producing large sporocarps. It is proposed that enhanced nitrogen deposition increases ectomycorrhizal nitrogen assimilation, consuming more carbon and leaving less for extrametrical mycelium and sporocarp development.  相似文献

As an indicator of environmental pollution, we collected tree rings and bark of linden (Tilia platyphyllos Scop.) from four sampling locations in Serbia. Mn and Pb were determined with a spectrochemical method that has an argon-stabilized U-shaped DC arc with aerosol supply as excitation source. Increased concentrations of Mn in linden tree rings and bark were found at the Debeli Lug location, where the Mn transfer factors were largest. The availability of Mn in soil and tree rings was greatly influenced by pH. Since 1950, Mn level decreased more noticeably on acidic soils. Higher concentrations of Pb were found in linden tree rings and bark at the locations Fru?ka Gora and Zemun. Proximity of the road to Novi Sad at both sites may be a possible reason for this. The Pb transfer factor was highest at Fru?ka Gora. The ratio of bioavailable elements in soil for Mn and Pb were also calculated. Close correlations between Mn and Pb concentrations in linden tree rings and the ratio of bioavailable elements in soil were seen at all four locations.  相似文献

The amounts of sixty elements in developing, maturing, senescent and wilting leaves, and in the wintering dead leaves attached to the branches, are reported for a beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest on mor Podzol in south Sweden, a site with no local sources of pollution or geological anomalies. The amounts (contents per leaf) of K (potassium), Rb (rubidium), Cs (caesium), Cu (copper) and P (phosphorus) were highest in young leaves, decreasing throughout the growing season and usually in the subsequent winter. The entirely opposite pattern with a continuous, mostly even increase of the amounts was measured with Be (beryllium), Ba (barium), Hg (mercury), Al (aluminium), Tl (thallium), Pb (lead), Bi (bismuth), V (vanadium), W (tungsten), As (arsenic), Sb (antimony), and Se (selenium). Amounts of rare-earth elements and some transition metals, such as Co (cobalt), Ti (titanium), and the actinides Th (thorium) and U (uranium) were more stable during the growing season, after an initial increase in early summer, but increased greatly in the winter. This winter increase in dead attached leaves has to be accounted for by uptake from long-distance transported constituents in dry and wet deposition. It was similar to deposition rate estimates using moss carpets from the same locality. A passive uptake was positively related to ionic charge and atomic mass. However, the amounts of several, mainly non-essential elements, such as Ni (nickel), Sc (scandium), Zr (zirconium), Cr (chromium), Ag (silver), and Cd (cadmium) were not much lower in the young or maturing leaves than in the wintered dead leaves of this deciduous (hardwood) forest and a proportion apparently originated from internal translocation in the trees. Seasonal fluxes or cycling of many of the scarce or rare elements reported here have never been studied before in forest ecosystems.  相似文献

The sulphur isotope composition of the epiphytic lichens, Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl and Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf, of the terricolous lichens, Cladina sp. and Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd., and of pine bark, at 31 sites in Finland, appeared to be dependent on lichen and tree species. The negative correlation of sulphur isotope composition with sulphur content was highly significant (P<0.001) in H. physodes and significant (P<0.01) in Pseudevernia furfuracea and Peltigera aphthosa. No correlation between the sulphur isotope composition and sulphur content was found for Cladina sp. and pine bark. The sulphur isotope compositions displayed statistically significant regional variation from south to north. Microenvironmental factors were considered, including phorophyte species and the chemical form of sulphur.  相似文献

A statistical Lagrangian atmospheric transport model was used to generate annual maps of deposition of sulphur and oxidised and reduced nitrogen for the UK at a 5×5 km2 resolution. The model was run using emissions for the year 2002. The model was compared with measurements of gas concentrations (SO2, NOx, HNO3 and NH3) and of wet deposition and aerosol concentrations of SO42−, NO3 and NH4+ from national monitoring networks. Good correlation was obtained, demonstrating that the model is capable of accurately estimating the mass balance and spatial distribution of sulphur and nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere. A future emissions scenario for the year 2020 was used to test the influence of shipping emissions on sulphur deposition in the UK. The results show that, if shipping emissions are assumed to increase at a rate of 2.5% per year, their relative contribution to sulphur deposition is expected to increase from 9% to 28% between 2002 and 2020. The model was compared to both a European scale and a global scale chemical transport model and found to give broad agreement with the magnitude and location of sulphur deposition associated with shipping emissions. Enforcement of the MARPOL convention to reduce the sulphur content in marine fuel to 1% was estimated to result in a 6% reduction in total sulphur deposition to the UK for the year 2020. The percentage area of sensitive habitats with exceedance of critical loads for acidity in the UK was predicted to decrease by 1% with the implementation of the MARPOL convention.  相似文献

At forested catchments at Lake G?rdsj?n on the Swedish west coast the deposition and runoff chemistry has been followed during the period 1979-1990 by throughfall and runoff measurements as well as by measurements of atmospheric concentrations. The 10-year means in throughfall and runoff are very similar for sulphur and the main seasalt ions sodium and chloride; for sulphur 26.1 and 27.6 kg ha(-1) yr(-1), for sodium 49 and 52 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) and for chloride 96 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) and 93 kg ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively. The actual flows are 100-200% higher than the wet deposition as collected in open bulk precipitation collectors indicating a very large input by dry deposition. One important question is to what extent the throughfall and runoff values can be used as measures of total deposition. We present results from studies at different experimental catchments illustrating the possibilities of using throughfall and runoff data as measures of atmospheric deposition of sulphur and seasalt.  相似文献
