Four different methods were used in the control conditions of laboratory to estimate the ingestion rate of a female meiobenthic harpacticoid copepod Amonardia normani: (1) reduction of algal biomass, (2) the quantification of total pigments in fecal pellets, (3) the gut fluorescence method, (4) the percentage of assimilation and the total egestion rate. The food used during all experiments was the diatom Nitzschia constricta in an axenic condition at the concentration of 0.13 μg Chl-a mL?1 at stationary growth phase. All experiments were made at 20 °C and 30 salinity. All tested methods excepted the quantification of total pigments in fecal pellets resulted in similar estimatives. The gut fluorescence method indicated that during the day gut contents are smaller than during the night but the gut passage time was faster, resulting in similar ingestion rates during the day and the night. The reduction of algal biomass and the percentage of assimilation and the total egestion rate also indicated similar ingestion rates in the day and in the night. The daily ingestion rate represents 107 % of female carbon weight per day (903 ng C cop?1day?1).  相似文献

Variabilities in the responses of several South African red and green macroalgae to direct grazing and the responses of one green alga to cues from grazers were tested. We used two feeding experiments: (1) testing the induced responses of three red and one green algae to direct grazing by mesograzers and (2) a multi-treatment experiment, in which the direct and indirect effects of one macrograzer species on the green alga Codium platylobium were assessed. Consumption rates were assessed in feeding assays with intact algal pieces and with agar pellets containing non-polar extracts of the test algae. Defensive responses were induced for intact pieces of Galaxaura diessingiana, but were not induced in pellets, suggesting either morphological defence or chemical defence using polar compounds other than polyphenols. In contrast, exposure to grazing stimulated consumption of Gracilaria capensis and Hypnea spicifera by another grazing species. In the multi-treatment experiment, waterborne cues from both grazing and non-grazing snails induced defensive algal traits in C. platylobium. We suggest that inducible defences among macroalgae are not restricted to brown algae, but that both the responses of algae to grazers and of grazers to the defences of macroalgae are intrinsically variable and complex.  相似文献

The re-use of faecal pellets in the water column before sinking to the seafloor is known as an important pathway in marine food webs. Especially planktonic copepods seems to be actively use their faecal pellets. Since benthic copepods (order Harpacticoida) live in the vicinity of their pellets, it remains unclear how important these pellets are for their feeding ecology. In the present study a laboratory experiment was conducted to analyse the importance of faecal pellets for the feeding ecology of the harpacticoid Paramphiascella fulvofasciata and its grazing pressure on two diatom species (Seminavis robusta, Navicula phyllepta). By quantifying the amount and volume of the produced faecel pellets in different treatments, it was tested to what extent the food source and the lack of faecal pellets would influence the production of faecal pellets. We found that the grazing pressure of P. fulvofasciata depended on the diatom density since only a top-down effect could be found on the smaller Navicula cells during its initial exponential growth phase. The grazer had a negative effect on the diatom growth and controlled the cell density to about 4,000 cells/cm2. In spite of the fact that the addition of faecal pellets did not show a significant positive effect on the assimilation of diatoms, the removal of faecal pellets strongly promoted the pellet production. Especially when grazing on Navicula the harpacticoid P. fulvofasciata produced significantly more and smaller faecal pellets when the pellets were removed. This outcome illustrates the need for faecal pellets of this harpacticoid copepod when grazing on the diatom Navicula. Apart from its selection for smaller diatom cells, it was suggested that the colonisation of heterotrophic bacteria enriched these pellets. This study is the first to indicate that trophic upgrading occurs on faecal pellets and not only on the initial autotrophic food sources per se.  相似文献

Environmental and ecological degradation can be monitored by biological indicators such as plants, yet little research has been done using subterranean organisms such as collembola, especially in cities. Collembola, a soil fauna group, can be used to assess soil quality and to decipher assembly rules of soil organisms in cities. Here, we review 75 articles on soil collembola in an urban context. We found that soil properties and landscape characteristics influenced soil communities. There is a need for more connectivity between green urban spaces to allow the dispersion of collembola. Little information is available on the assembly of collembola communities, on biotic interactions and on dynamics of colonisation.

Grazing and faecal pellet production by the copepods Calanus helgolandicus and Pseudocalanus elongatus, feeding on the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi, were measured under defined laboratory conditions, together with the chemical characteristics and sinking rates of the faecal pellets produced. Ingestion rates of both copepods were equivalent at comparable cell concentrations, the relationship between ingestion rate (I, cells copepod-1 h-1) and food concentration (C, cells ml-1), being I=0.558C for both species. P. elongatus produced a larger number of smaller faecal pellets than C. helgolandicus, but egested a larger volume of material per individual. Only between 27 and 50% of the ingested coccolith calcite was egested in the faecal pellets, and it is possible that acid digestion in the copepod gut is responsible for these considerable losses. Average sinking rates of faecal pellets containing E. huxleyi coccoliths, produced by both species, were >100 m d-1. The implications of the quantitative laboratory estimates for the vertical flux of inorganic carbon are considered using recently studied shelf-break and oceanic E. huxleyi blooms in the N. E. Atlantic as examples.  相似文献

Faecal pellets were collected in 1988 from copepods which had fed in situ or in laboratory experiments, using screened natural seawater as food, at two stations off the coast of Labrador and one in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The chemical composition of the pellets and of particulate material in profiles and in laboratory food were measured in terms of particulate carbon, carbohydrate (soluble and insoluble), protein and lipid. Faecal pellet composition was somewhat similar in all experiments at the first two stations, where the compositions of particulate material in situ and copepod species assemblages were also similar. At the third station the compositions of faecal pellets and particulate material were slightly different from those at the other stations and the copepod species composition varied between sampling times. Faecal pellets at the first two stations had very low levels of soluble carbohydrate, while concentrations in the food were generally high, suggesting that it was efficiently metabolized by copepods, although it might have been absent because of sloppy feeding or release, after passage through the gut, in soluble form or from faecal pellets. Comparisons of POC: biogenic silica ratios in food and faecal pellets, calculated using data presented elsewhere (Head 1992; Mar. Biol. 112: 583–592), suggested that at these stations, where food concentrations were high (chlorophyll concentrations>8 gl-1), copepods may have been assimilating carbon rather inefficiently.  相似文献

This study investigates the changes in soil microbial populations as vegetational succession progress from abandoned farmland to climax forest in the Ziwuling Forest, which is located in the northern part of the Loess Plateau, China. Different organic C and total extractable N between the fumigated and non-fumigated soils were assumed to be released from soil microorganisms. Soil microbial C was calculated using Kec = 0.38 and microbial N was calculated using Ken = 0.45. The released P was converted to microbial biomass P using Kep = 0.40. Soil bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes increased as the vegetational succession progressed. Microbial C was of the highest amount in farmland. Microbial C, N, and P generally increased from abandoned land to climax community. The results indicated significant (P < 0.05) diversities of soil microbial biomass under different vegetation. There was a significant correlation between microbial biomass and soil nutrients. Knowledge about soil microbial populations is important for forecasting vegetational succession and determining the ecological condition of the environment.  相似文献

Goal and Scope

Products based on fatty acids (including acetic acid) are known in plant protection since more than 100 years to control several harmful organisms. In the following decades, however, they lost their importance due to the rapid development of ‘modern’ chemical pesticides. In the meantime some trials were run to control weeds with relatively high doses. The knowledge on its ecotoxic effects on soil microorganisms as a part of the soil fertility, however, is still incomplete.

Methods

Under laboratory conditions two agricultural soils were treated with different dosages of two products based on acetic acid and pelargonic acid (=nonanoic acid) as well as with a biocidal reference compound (e.g. dinitrophenol herbicide). The applied dosages were related to the concentrations in soil reached after simulated penetration of practical field amounts into upper soil layers. In some cases green manuring was simulated by adding lucerne meal to the soil. During the incubation for several weeks biomass-related microbial activities (dehydrogenase activity, substrate-induced shortterm respiration) as well as the mineralization of carbon and nitrogen (including nitrification) were measured.

Results and Conclusion

As compared to ‘normal’ pesticides (e.g. the reference compound) the effects of both test substances on soil microorganisms showed different behaviour. Nearly none of the effects typical for strongly biocidal compounds, namely a dose-related inhibition of microbial biomass combined with a stimulated mineralization (especially of nitrogen), occurred with the fatty acid products. Depending on the marked input of organic carbon by the higher dosages of fatty acid products and their rapid decomposition, especially of acetic acid, an increase of biomass-related parameters and of carbon mineralization combined with a reduction of the available nitrate content (e.g biological nitrogen immobilization) occurred for several weeks. By combining the results of the soil with that of lucerne meal-amended soil ‘real effects’ can be distinguished from those depending on the decomposition of the introduced carbon. In comparison with the strongly biocidal reference compound the two fatty acid products not only caused little microbiological-ecotoxicological impacts on the soil, but often stimulated important microbiological parameters for some time.

Recommendation and Perspective

As result of the trials we recommend an extended microbiological-ecotoxicological test spectrum especially for those plant protection products (pesticides) which should be applied at high dosages or if they contain higher amounts of well decomposable organic substances. This is necessary to distinguish dose-related enhanced biocidal activities induced by biocidal effects (including the subsequent mineralization of the killed microorganisms) from ‘real’ stimulations directly produced by the substrate.  相似文献

Echinoderms are major predators of anemones in temperate ecosystems. The fate of two algae, zooxanthellae and zoochlorellae, after their host anemone (Anthopleura elegantissima Brandt) was consumed by the leather star Dermasterias imbricata Grube was determined in experiments conducted in July and August 2004. Productivity, photosynthetic pigments, and mitotic index (percent of cells dividing) were used as indicators of algal health; algae released after leather stars consumed their host were compared with algae freshly isolated from anemones. Two types of waste products contained algae: pellets resulting from extraoral digestion, and feces. Zooxanthellae and zoochlorellae isolated from these waste products were photosynthetic, although to different extents. For algae from feces and pellets, light-saturated photosynthetic rates (P max) were 85 and 13%, respectively, of P max of freshly isolated zooxanthellae; and were 20 and 46%, respectively, for zoochlorellae. The photosynthetic pigments and mitotic index (percent of dividing cells) were not altered by the feeding activities of the leather star. These results show that algae released by seastar predation on their hosts remain viable, and are hence available for establishing symbioses in A. elegantissima and other potential hosts.  相似文献

The green alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) is a common macrophyte in the northern Baltic Sea, where it forms drifting mats during summer. We studied the effect of its stage of decomposition on the density, diversity, and resource usage of associated meio- and macrofauna. We hypothesised that mobile species would show small variation in food preferences among decomposition stages, while high variation was expected in stationary species, as reflected in their stable isotope signatures. The assemblage structure of the fauna differed between the 3 studied algal degradation stages, Green (attached, healthy), Degraded (attached, but starting to decay), and Drift (detached, decaying). C/N ratios were highest in green algae and decreased in decaying algal stages. Variation in stable isotope ratios of stationary and mobile species supported our resource use hypothesis. The decomposition stage of C. glomerata significantly affected the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of both the alga and its main grazer species. Higher invertebrate diversity in the more decaying stages was probably facilitated by decomposer microbes adding resource types and by the proximity of the detached algal mats to the sediment.  相似文献

The gut contents of three intertidal patellid limpets were analysed by collecting foraging specimens on a breakwater on the Tyrrhenian coast (central Italy) between May 1988 and October 1989. The three species coexist there showing a different, but partially overlapping zonation: Patella aspera dominates the infralittoral fringe; the majority of P. caerulea inhabits the lower midlittoral, while P. rustica is most abundant in the upper midlittoral. The algae present on slivers of substratum over which each limpet collected was moving were identified. Moreover, floristic surveys were made along the shore in order to characterize the algal cover of the different zonal belts. The floristic study revealed that the basic elements of algal communities typical of western Mediterranean rocky shores are present in the study area. The algae found on the slivers under the foraging limpets were generally representative of the algal community typical of the same zone. There was a marked difference between the diets of P. rustica and P. aspera due to the fact that the first species forages on a few low lying epilithic and endolithic Cyanophyceae, while P. aspera feeds on a large number of species belonging to all the main algal classes and life forms considered, including frondose epilithics and epiphytics. The diet of P. caerulea resembles that of P. aspera in algal heterogeneity, but is dominated by Cyanophyceae as in P. rustica. A detailed analysis of the differences between gut contents of each limpet species and the relative slivers showed an obvious general correspondence, but revealed also that the diets of the three species do not completely reflect the availability of algae. These findings suggest that the basic diet segregation mechanism between the three populations is their zonal separation. However, the difference in gut contents of heterospecific limpets foraging in the same zone suggests the existence of supplementary morphy-functional or behavioural mechanisms for diet segregation between the three species.  相似文献

We report the results of a detailed investigation on the trophoecology of two dominant meiofaunal species at the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano (HMMV), a deep-sea cold methane-venting seep. Analyses of fatty acids (FAs) and their stable carbon isotopes were used to determine the importance of chemosynthetic nutritional pathways for the dominant copepod species (morphologically very similar to Tisbe wilsoni) inhabiting the volcano’s centre and the abundant nematode Halomonhystera disjuncta from the surrounding microbial mats. The strong dominance of bacterial biomarkers (16:1ω7c, 18:1ω7c and 16:1ω8c) coupled with their individual light carbon isotopes signatures (δ13C ranging from ?52 to ?81‰) and the lack of symbiotic relationships with prokaryotes (as revealed by molecular analyses and fluorescent in situ hybridisation) indicated that chemosynthetically derived carbon constitutes the main diet of both species. However, the copepod showed a stronger reliance on the utilisation of methanotrophic bacteria and contained polyunsaturated FAs of bacterial origin (20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3 with isotope signatures δ13C < ?80‰). Instead, the FA profiles of H. disjuncta suggested that sulphide-oxidising bacteria constituted the main diet of this nematode. Therefore, HMMV can be regarded as a persistent deep-sea cold seep, allowing a chemosynthesis-based trophic specialisation by the dominant meiofaunal species inhabiting its sediments. The present investigation, through the determination of the fatty acid profiles, provides the first evidence for trophic specialisation of meiofauna associated with sub-habitats within a cold seep.  相似文献

Waterbirds are known to disperse invertebrate propagules that survive gut passage, but there is very little information about how the probability of dispersal changes at different times of the annual cycle when birds move in different directions, or how it is affected by changes in diet. We studied internal transport of brine shrimp Artemia cysts by migratory waders in the Odiel saltworks in south-west Spain. Viable cysts of parthenogenetic Artemia were abundant in the faeces and regurgitated pellets of redshank Tringa totanus, pellets of spotted redshank T. erythropus, and faeces of black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa during spring and/or autumn migrations in 2001–2002, but were not recorded during winter. Godwits did not produce pellets, and spotted redshank faeces were not sampled. Significant correlations between the number of cysts in a pellet or faecal sample and the proportion of that sample constituted by Artemia adults suggested that most cysts were ingested while in the ovisacs of gravid females. The proportion of cysts destroyed during digestion increased when accompanied by harder food items or grit, and when fewer cysts were ingested. The median number of intact cysts was higher in redshank faeces than in their pellets, but cysts extracted from pellets were more likely to hatch. A higher proportion of redshank pellets contained Artemia cysts in spring than in autumn, but more redshank migrated through the area in autumn. Significantly fewer cysts were recorded in redshank pellets in winter than in spring or autumn. Our results confirm that there is potential for long-distance dispersal of Artemia cysts via waders during both northwards (spring) and southwards (autumn) migrations.  相似文献

For three spider crabs (Tiarinia cornigera, Micippaplatipes and Pugettia quadridens quadridens), patterns of algal utilization for decorating were compared with the dynamics of algae on an intertidal rocky shore reef where the crabs co-occurred. T. cornigera and P. quadridens quadridens were most abundant from autumn to spring when the dominant algae (Boodleacoacta, Sargassum hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera) occurred in high coverage, while M. platipes was most abundant from spring to autumn. Monthly change of algae used for decorating was not correlated with algae growing in the crab habitat for T. cornigera, but for M. platipes, it was positively correlated for two algal species, and for P. quadridens quadridens, negatively correlated for one algal species. Each species of the spider crabs used some algal species preferentially for decoration. Decorating preference experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that M. platipes and P. quadridens quadridens exhibited similar preference to their algal utilization in the field, whereas for T. cornigera, algal preference in the experiment differed from utilization in the field. Comparisons between materials used for decoration and gut contents revealed that T. cornigera and M. platipes used algal species differently for decorating and feeding, while P. quadridens quadridens used the same algal species for both decorating and feeding. Different tactics for camouflage are discussed in terms of algal utilizations by the three majid species. Received: 25 September 1999 / Accepted: 22 June 2000  相似文献

Surfaces from the habitat of adult Haliotis rubra were tested as inducers of larval settlement to determine the cues that larvae may respond to in the field. Settlement was high on the green algal species Ulva australis and Ulva compressa (Chlorophyta), the articulated coralline algae Amphiroa anceps and Corallina officinalis, and encrusting coralline algae (Rhodophyta). Biofilmed abiotic surfaces such as rocks, sand and shells did not induce settlement. Ulvella lens was also included as a control. Treatment of U. australis, A. anceps and C. officinalis with antibiotics to reduce bacterial films on the surface did not reduce the settlement response of H. rubra larvae. Similarly, treatment of these species and encrusting coralline algae with germanium dioxide to reduce diatom growth did not significantly reduce larval settlement. These results suggest that macroalgae, particularly green algal species, may play an important role in the recruitment of H. rubra larvae in the field and can be used to induce larval settlement in hatchery culture.  相似文献

Faecal pellet formation within the gut of Stage V and adult females of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus Claus involves (1) cyclical processes of digestion and (2) the contribution of parts of the gut epithelium to the pellets. During an experimental regime in which dim lighting was restricted to day-time and feeding to night-time (17.00 to 09.00 hrs), the copepods responded with cyclical changes in both the quantity of pellets they produced and the fine structure of the contents. During the feeding period, the contents showed changes in the relative amounts of materials originating from disintegrated cells of the digestive epithelium and those derived directly from the ingested food. The vacuolar B-cells of the gut contribute to the content of the pellets and the distal, necrotic N-cells appear to be involved in forming the peritrophic membrane which encloses each pellet. Cells of the gut epithelium which are broken down during feeding are all replaced during the non-feeding period. Other individuals were taken directly from the sea and in these, also, the cells of the gut broke down during feeding and contributed to the faecal pellets. The supply of epithelial cells may limit the duration of the feeding period.  相似文献

To access the influence of a vegetation on soil microorganisms toward organic pollutant biogegration, this study examined the rhizospheric effects of four plant species (sudan grass, white clover, alfalfa, and fescue) on the soil microbial community and in-situ pyrene (PYR) biodegradation. The results indicated that the spiked PYR levels in soils decreased substantially compared to the control soil without planting. With equal planted densities, the efficiencies of PYR degradation in rhizosphere with sudan grass, white clover, alfalfa and fescue were 34.0%, 28.4%, 27.7%, and 9.9%, respectively. However, on the basis of equal root biomass the efficiencies were in order of white clover >> alfalfa > sudan > fescue. The increased PYR biodegradation was attributed to the enhanced bacterial population and activity induced by plant roots in the rhizosphere. Soil microbial species and biomasses were elucidated in terms of microbial phospholipid ester-linked fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant changes in PLFA pattern in planted and non-planted soils spiked with PYR. Total PLFAs in planted soils were all higher than those in non-planted soils. PLFA assemblages indicated that bacteria were the primary PYR degrading microorganisms, and that Gram-positive bacteria exhibited higher tolerance to PYR than Gram-negative bacteria did.  相似文献

The diet of cavity sponges on the narrow fringing reefs of Curaçao, Caribbean was studied. The origin and resources of the bulk food of these sponges, i.e., dissolved organic matter (DOM), were identified using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. We found that phytoplankton and its derived DOM from the adjacent open sea and from reef overlying water is not the main source of food for most of the sponges examined nor is bacterioplankton. Interestingly, dual stable isotope signatures (δ13Corg, δ15Norg) and fatty acid biomarkers appoint coral mucus and organic matter derived from crustose coralline algae (CCA) as probable food sources for encrusting sponges. Mucus-derived DOM may contribute up to 66% to the diet of examined sponges based on results of dual isotope mixing model analysis. The contribution of CCA (as purported representative for benthic algae) was smaller with values up to 31%. Together, mucus- and CCA-derived substrates contributed for 48–73% to the diet of sponges. The presence of the exogenous fatty acid 20:4ω6 in sponges, which is abundant in coral mucus of Madracis mirabilis and in CCA, highlights these reef-derived resources as sources of nutrition for DOM feeding cavity sponges. The relatively high concentrations of exogenous 20:4ω6 in all sponges examined supports our hypothesis that the bulk of the food of the cavity sponge community is reef-derived. Our results imply that cavity sponges play an important role in conserving food and energy produced within the reef.  相似文献

Artemia sp. shells were evaluated to determine their accuracy for tracing the passage of algal filaments through the gut of the damselfish Pomacentrus amboinensis Bleeker, 1868 (family Pomacentridae), an omnivorous coral reef fish. An automatic faeces-collection apparatus enabled the quantitative collection of markers and faeces in the laboratory. Defecation rates were similar for light and heavy doses of Artemia sp. shells and controls, indicating no detrimental effects of Artemia sp. shells on the gut throughput rate of P. amboinensis. In addition, similar rates and patterns of the passage of Artemia sp. shells and the algal markers Enteromorpha sp. and Lyngbya sp. indicated that Artemia sp. shells provide a reliable representation of the throughput rate of algal filaments. The mean throughput time of P. amboinensis was 4.6 h ±0.3 SE, with a modal recovery time of 4 h. Laboratory throughput estimates were validated by comparing the distribution patterns of Artemia sp. shells in the dissected gut of specimens administered markers in the laboratory and field. In addition, the retention of markers in the stomach of P. amboinensis suggested a likely site of prolonged processing. Received: 24 October 1996 / Accepted: 18 March 1997  相似文献

Thirty-six samples of benthic algae were collected from the continental shelf along the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The algae contain 82.8±143 ppm aliphatic hydrocarbons by dry weight and 11.8±22.7 ppm aromatic and polyolefinic hydrocarbons. The aliphatic constituents of red algae are composed almost entirely of n-C17 (70 to 95% of aliphatic weight); green algae have varying amounts of n-alkanes in the range of n-C15 to n-C19, with homologous series of odd carbon number n-alkenes. Phytadienes occur as high as 740 ppm dry weight in the green algae and do not appear to be related to time or place of collection or to presence of any petroleum pollutants. The single brown algal species contains predominantly n-C15. About 30% of the samples have hydrocarbons resembling degraded petroleum residues, but no petroleum pollution of recent origin was detected in any specimen.  相似文献
