The influence of environmental variables and habitat on growth and survival of juvenile gadoid species in the Atlantic has been clearly demonstrated; conversely, in the North Pacific little is known about the habitat and ecology of juvenile Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus Tilesius). The hypothesis that density of young-of-the-year (YOY) Pacific cod in nearshore habitats is predicted by shallow depth and the presence of eelgrass and macroalgae was tested in a variety of nearshore habitats adjacent to commercial fishing grounds near Kodiak Island, AK. From 10 to 22 August 2002, a beach seine and small-meshed beam trawl were used to capture YOY Pacific cod (n = 254) ranging from 42 to 110 mm fork length. Depth, water temperature, salinity, sediment grain size, and percent cover by emergent structure (i.e. tube-dwelling polychaetes, sea cucumber mounds, macroalgae) were measured prior to fishing. Density of YOY Pacific cod was highest in areas of moderate depth (15–20 m) and positively and linearly related to percent cover by sea cucumber mounds and to salinity. No previous studies have documented fish utilizing sea cucumber mounds as habitat. Furthermore, eelgrass and macroalgae were inconsequential to cod distribution. Diets consisted mainly of small calanoid copepods, mysids, and gammarid amphipods and were significantly related to cod length and depth. This work provides important information on previously undocumented factors that affect distribution and feeding of YOY Pacific cod, which ultimately influence growth and survival in this species.  相似文献

Two positive sea-surface temperature anomalies occurred in the Arabian Gulf in short sequence. Between May and August 1996 and 1998, sea-surface temperatures in the southern Arabian Gulf were elevated by 2°C above average. The consequences for coral fauna, coral diseases and coral regeneration were studied in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) between Jebel Ali and Ras Hasyan. In 1996, coral death was widespread, affecting primarily the genus Acropora. In Acropora-dominated areas, live coral cover was reduced from 90% to about 26% in 1996, while in 1998 only a reduction from 26% to 22% of the remaining coral cover occurred. In the study area, all six Acropora species suffered total mortality in 1996, thus the coral fauna was reduced from 34 species to 27. The nearest areas with surviving Acropora were 30 km to the east (Deira) and 20 km to the west (Al Jazira). Massive coral species suffered negligible mortality, and slowly increased in space cover. The Acropora overkill turned 7.9 km2 (19.7% of total coral-covered area) of previously lush coral gardens into a dead framework that was increasingly bioeroded. Acropora recruitment only started in 1998, average recruit size in 1999 was 7Dž cm, and recruits were rare. Prior to the mass mortality event, coral diseases were common and seasonal (14LJ% of corals, mainly Acropora, affected in summer, in winter 7Lj%, mainly massives), after the mortality event seasonality was lost and infection remained below winter levels (6LJ%, only massives infected). In fish, overall species richness decreased from 95 to 64 species in point counts, but frequency only decreased in one species (Pseudochromis persicus). Guild structure changed inasmuch as herbivores and planktivores increased, and invertivores decreased, although differences were not statistically significant. The most abundant family, both prior to and after the coral mass mortality, was Lutjanidae. It appears that even though much of the coral was dead, the maintenance of structural complexity allowed the fish assemblage to avoid a similar catastrophic change to that experienced by the coral assemblage.  相似文献

In order to examine the variation in migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, we measured otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis in 5 yellow eels and 20 silver eels collected in the coastal waters of the Amakusa Islands during the spawning migration season. Three migratory types categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. Estuarine eels were dominant (52%), sea eels were the second most abundant (28%), followed by river eels (20%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels that inhabit the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area, although similar analyses should be made over the wide-range geographic distribution of this species, to provide better estimates of the reproductive contributions by different migratory patterns of the population.  相似文献

Shortfinned squid species of the genus Illex support commercial fisheries throughout the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Previous identification of interspecific and intraspecific populations by morphological and size-at-maturity studies have not provided conclusive results. We analysed morphometric body and beak variables (24 characters) in three species of the genus (I. coindetii, I. illecebrosus and I. argentinus), using a geographic and seasonal series of 33 populations for 1,500 specimens of I. coindetii, I. illecebrosus and I. argentinus. Residuals of the regression between each morphometric body and beak variable and mantle length were used as input in a stepwise discriminant analysis. Species discrimination by body and hectocotylus characters required at least eight variables and resulted in high correct-classification percentages for I. coindetii and I. argentinus (75% and 90%, respectively), whereas the best identification resulted from beak characters (83% correctly classified). Size of the suckerless basal arm, sucker-bearing length and beak lateral wall discriminated best among I. coindetii from northern Iberia, northwest Iberia (year-1996) and Ireland in the Atlantic and western Mediterranean versus middle and eastern Mediterranean samples. Canadian shelf and American samples were discriminated from Canadian slope I. illecebrosus. Winter/shelf and winter/slope samples of I. argentinus seemed to form a single biological group separated from Falkland Island, 46°S/autumn spawners and 46°S/1996 specimens along the Patagonian Shelf. No significant sexual or maturity polymorphism was obtained. Discriminant analysis optimised population diagnosis on a morphometric basis of interest in fisheries strategies. The spatial distribution and population structure of two dominant ice-associated copepods, Drescheriella glacialis and Paralabidocera antarctica, were studied during winter at nine locations in east Antarctic fast ice. These species accounted for at least 90% of the total metazoan abundance at each location. Abundances were high, reaching 175 individuals l-1 (190,000 m-2) for D. glacialis and 660 l-1 (901,000 m-2) for P. antarctica. These abundances were probably partly supported by the high biomass of ice-algae (Pearson correlation coefficient, r=0.75), as indicated by chlorophyll-a concentrations (1.7-10.1 µg l-1). The population structures of each species suggested very different life-history strategies. All developmental stages of D. glacialis were isolated from the ice cores, including females with egg sacs, supporting the hypothesis that this species reproduces in the sea ice during winter. This strategy might assist D. glacialis in leading a continually colonising existence, whereby it responds opportunistically to the availability of favourable habitat patches. The populations of P. antarctica were composed primarily of nauplii (>99%), consistent with past observations of a synchronised life cycle for this species. The strong coupling of the developmental cycle of P. antarctica to the growth and decay of sea ice suggests that local extinctions might occur in areas where ice break-out is unpredictable.  相似文献

The loliginid squids Loligo pealei LeSueur and L. plei Blaineville (both recently proposed for reclassification as Doryteuthis) are commercially important, similar in appearance, and sympatric throughout much of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. To investigate possible cryptic speciation and population structure, we examined samples (collected from 1995 to 1997) of both species for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in PCR products of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase (subunit I). RFLP haplotypes were further characterized by direct sequencing. In North American waters, cryptic speciation was rejected by the far greater nucleotide sequence divergence between species (~14%) versus within species (<1%). Each species displayed about a dozen RFLP haplotypes, but only three of their respective haplotypes were found among 90% of L. pealei specimens (n=356) and 97% of L. plei specimens (n=431). For L. pealei, a genetic break existed between the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean; among sample units within each population, gene flow was consistent with panmixia. The phylogeography of L. pealei is likely a consequence of the eastward currents of the Florida Straits, the elevated temperatures of those surface waters, and the restriction of this species to the continental shelf. For L. plei, a genetic break existed between longitudes 88°W and 89°W, with the northwestern Gulf of Mexico and the northeastern Gulf-Atlantic Ocean comprising separate populations; among sample units within each population, gene flow fit an isolation-by-distance model. If the genetic break found for L. plei represents resident populations separated by nearshore physical parameters (e.g. effects of the Mississippi River and the sediment boundary at longitude 88°W), the lack of structure within the Gulf for L. pealei might be due to its distribution farther from shore. However, the two populations of L. plei probably represent annual recolonization from the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and from the eastern Caribbean Sea, whereas the populations of L. pealei probably are permanent residents within their respective regions.  相似文献

The bivalve Macoma balthica migrates twice during the benthic part of its life cycle. During the spring migration (May-June), the newly settled spat (0-group) migrates to the nurseries in the high intertidal. Seven to nine months later, the bivalves migrate back to the low tidal flats and the subtidal (winter migration, 1-group). Both 0- and 1-group M. balthica use byssus threads for active pelagic migrations. As many M. balthica disappear during these migrations, we examined experimentally the importance of predation on 0- and 1-group M. balthica. Laboratory experiments using a circular aquarium determined predation rates on buried (no current) and drifting (current) 0- and 1-group M. balthica by several fish species (plaice, flounder, goby and whiting) and the shore crab. Under illuminated conditions, more M. balthica were consumed when migrating than when buried, whereas there was no difference between experiments in conditions of darkness. For the 0-group, predation rates on migrating and buried M. balthica in the dark were lower than in the light. The stomachs of pelagic fish in the Wadden Sea and Oosterschelde estuary did not contain M. balthica during winter migration. In the Wadden Sea, 1-group M. balthica primarily migrated at night. In conclusion, enhanced predation on drifting, as compared to buried, M. balthica may be the mechanism that explains enhanced mortality during migration in light, and may explain why M. balthica mainly migrates at night in the field. As we found no M. balthica in stomachs of pelagic fish, we do not know whether predation on byssus drifting M. balthica exists in the field. There are, however, some indications for fish predation on infaunal polychaetes during pelagic migrations.  相似文献

The effect of predation on artificial reef juvenile demersal fish species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There is a concern that artificial reefs (AR) may act purely as fishing aggregation devices. Predators attracted to ARs can influence the distribution and abundance of prey fish species. Determining the role of predators in AR is important in advancing the understanding of community interactions. This paper documents the effects of predation on fish assemblages of AR located near a coastal lagoon fish nursery. The Dicentrarchus labrax is a very opportunistic species preying on juveniles (0+ and 1+ age classes) of several demersal fish species on the ARs. Reef prey and sea bass abundance were negatively correlated. The mean numbers of prey per sea bass stomach increased with the increase of reef fish prey abundance, suggesting that predation has a significant influence, resulting in a decrease in prey abundance. Prey mortality (4–48%) of demersal reef fish associated species depends on bass density. Prey selection was related both with prey abundance and vulnerability. Results showed that D. labrax predation on AR-fish associated species can increase prey natural mortality. However, the role of bass predation on the ecological functioning of exploited ARs is not clear. There may be increases in local fishing yields due either to an increase in predator biomass through aggregation of sea bass attracted to ARs or to greater production. In contrast, predation on juveniles of economically important reef fish preys, especially the most frequent and abundant (Boops boops), can contribute to a decrease in recruitment to the fishery. Our results indicate that inter-specific interactions (predator–prey) are important in terms of conservation and management, as well as for the evaluation of the long-term effects of reef deployment. Thus, it is necessary to consider ecological interactions, such as predation, prior to the development and deployment of artificial habitats as a tool for rehabilitation.  相似文献

The availability of different forms of nitrogen in coastal and estuarine waters may be important in determining the abundance and productivity of different phytoplankton species. Although urea has been shown to contribute as much as 50% of the nitrogen for phytoplankton nutrition, relatively little is known of the activity and expression of urease in phytoplankton. Using an in vitro enzyme assay, urease activities were examined in laboratory cultures of three species: Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle. Cultures of P. minimum and T. weissflogii were grown on three nitrogen sources (NO3m, NH4+, and urea), while A. anophagefferens was grown only on NO3m and urea. Urease was found to be constitutive in all cultures, but activity varied with growth rate and assay temperature for the different cultures. For A. anophagefferens, urease activity varied positively with growth rate regardless of the N source, while for P. minimum, urease activity varied positively with growth rate only for cultures grown on urea and NH4+. In contrast, for T. weissflogii, activity did not vary with growth rate for any of the N sources. For all species, urease activity increased with assay temperature, but with different apparent temperature optima. For A. anophagefferens, in vitro activity increased from near 0-30°C, and remained stable to 50°C, while for P. minimum, increased in vitro activity was noted from near 0-20°C, but constant activity was observed between 20°C and 50°C. For T. weissfloggii, while activity also increased from 0°C to 20°C, subsequent decreases were noted when temperature was elevated above 20°C. Urease activity had a half-saturation constant of 120-165 wg atom N lу in all three species. On both an hourly and daily basis, urease activity in A. anophagefferens exceeded nitrogen demand for growth. In P. minimum, urease activity on an hourly basis matched the nitrogen demand, but was less than the demand on a daily basis. For T. weissflogii, urease activity was always less than the nitrogen demand. These patterns in urease activity in three different species demonstrate that while apparently constitutive, the regulation of activity was substantially different in the diatom. These differences in the physiological regulation of urease activity, as well as other enzymes, may play a role in their ecological success in different environments.  相似文献

Catches obtained at regular intervals by beach seining, gill netting and otter trawling at ten, four and six sites, respectively, have been used to determine the contribution of the different species and life-cycle categories of fish to the ichthyofauna of the large Swan Estuary in temperate south-western Australia between February 1977 and December 1981. These data were also examined to investigate the influence of site, season and year on the densities of the more abundant species. A total of 630 803 fish, representing 36 families and 71 species, were caught in the shallows using beach seines during this 5 yr study. Although the majority of these species were marine teleosts that were caught infrequently (marine stragglers), representatives of 7 of the 15 most abundant species were marine teleosts which entered the estuary regularly, and in large numbers (marine estuarine-opportunists). Of the remaining 8 most abundant species in the shallows, 7 completed their life cycle within the estuary (estuarine species) and 1 (Nematalosa vlaminghi) was anadromous, feeding for a period at sea and spawning in the upper reaches of the estuary. The contribution of individuals of the marine estuarine-opportunist category to catches in the shallows declined from nearly 95% in the lower estuary, to 17% in the middle estuary and 6% in the upper estuary. The estuarine and anadromous groups made a considerable contribution to the catches in both the middle and upper estuaries. By contrast, the contribution of freshwater species was small and even in the upper estuary accounted for only 0.2% of the catch. Site within the estuary generally influenced the catches of individual species to a greater extent than either season or year, or the interactions between these factors. When seasonal effects were strong, they could be related to summer spawning migrations into the upper estuary (Nematalosa vlaminghi, Amniataba caudavittatus), spring immigrations into the lower estuary (Mugil cephalus), or winter movements into deeper and more saline waters (Apogon rueppellii). Annual variations in the density of Torquigener pleurogramma were related to marked annual differences in the recruitment of the 0+age class.  相似文献

Natural diets of vertically migrating zooplankton in the Sargasso Sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The feeding preferences of three common diel vertically migrating zooplankton were investigated from December 1999 to October 2000 at the U.S. JGOFS Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series Study (BATS) station in the Sargasso Sea. Gut content analysis of the copepods Pleuromamma xiphias (Giesbrecht) and Euchirella messinensis (Claus) and of the euphausiid Thysanopoda aequalis (Hansen) indicated that all three species fed on a wide variety of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and detrital material. Diet changes generally reflected seasonal trends in phytoplankton community structure. However, species-specific feeding preferences and differences in feeding selectivity among the three species were evident, and in general agreement with feeding habits predicted from the analysis of mouthpart morphology. The euphausiid T. aequalis fed equally on more different food types compared to both copepod species. The copepod P. xiphias consumed a diverse assemblage of phytoplankton from late winter through the summer (78-93% of gut items, by number, were phytoplankton) and based its diet more strongly on carnivorous feeding in autumn and early winter (31% and 61% of gut items were phytoplankton, respectively). E. messinensis showed the greatest feeding specialization, with a strong preference for pennate diatoms in winter and spring and for coccolithophorids during late summer and fall (constituting 67-93% of gut items by number). All three species consumed diatoms more than other phytoplankton taxa, even though diatoms form only a small fraction of the phytoplankton biomass in the Sargasso Sea. Although the majority of gut items identified were phytoplankton cells, the relative biomass contribution of these small cells may be lower than that of zooplankton and detritus. Zooplankton on which the three species primarily preyed were protozoans and crustaceans, but also included other metazoans such as chaetognaths and cnidarians. Marine snow was also an important component of the diet in all three species, with typically >50% and rarely <20% of the gut content being olive-green debris. Marine snow from larvacean houses was found in the guts of all three species, while E. messinenis appeared to selectively consume marine snow aggregates enriched with bicapitate Nitzschia spp. Large cyanobacteria (>4 µm in diameter) found in guts were also likely consumed with marine snow. The species-specific differences in the diets of these three migrating species suggest that an individual species approach is important in determining how feeding habits affect the structure of pelagic food webs and carbon cycling in the sea. The cobblerCnidoglanis macrocephalus (Valenciennes) is an endemic marine and estuarine catfish from southern Australia. Conflicting views on the degree of isolation of the estuarine populations underscore general questions about genetic divergence in coastal species. Although estuaries are widely recognized as ecologically important, little work has been done on their role in favouring genetic divergence. In order to estimate the extent of genetic subdivision among nearshore marine and estuarine populations, electrophoretic variation of enzymes was examined in seven marine and six estuarine populations of cobbler from sites spanning 1500 km along the southwest Australian coastline. Among all populations, the mean standardized variance in allelic frequencies (F ST) for six polymorphic loci was 0.277, a high value comparable to those of other shallow-water teleosts whose life-history characteristics and habitat preferences restrict their dispersal capability. The pattern of genetic identities between populations showed divergence between west and south coast sites. Within these regional groups, however, there was substantial heterogeneity, much of which was associated with estuaries. Among all six estuarine sites, the averageF ST was 0.333, 40% higher than the value of 0.237 for the marine sites. Low estimates of the genetically effective number of migrants suggest population subdivision between marine and estuarine environments and between similar habitat types. This study indicates the importance of habitat in affecting the connectedness of populations, even in apparently open marine systems.  相似文献

Abstract

Earlier papers indicated that the first incident of green discoloration in oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and the mass mortality observed in 1986 along the Taiwan Erhjin Chi coastal area were caused by the higher contents of total copper and copper species (mainly bioavailable and free ion) in sea water. the copper in sea water would be sorbed by suspended matter and transferred to sediments, and the copper in the sediments would also be desorbed to sea water. Processes of copper adsorption and desorption are the major factors influencing the contents of total copper and copper species in sea water and sediments. in this study, the Erhjin Chi sediments were mixed with sea water by a shaker technique. When the mixture was shaken for one hour, analogous to tidal mixing in estuaries, only copper desorption from sediments was observed. If the shaking time is increased for more than 3 hours, the copper released from the sediments was resorbed to the remaining solid phases. the higher the contents of mud (91.71%) and total copper (701 mg kg?1) in sediments, the higher the copper desorption rate (1.86 ppm hr?1) and copper adsorption rate (0.50 ppm hr?1) were observed. in sediments containing lower mud (0.80%) and lower copper (43.5 mg kg?1), the copper desorption and adsorption rates were 0.83 ppm hr?1 and 0.22 ppm hr?1, respectively. the interactions among the total copper and copper species in sea water and sediments, chemical and ecological parameters, and copper bioaccumulation in oysters in the Erhjin Chi estuarine and coastal area are also discussed.  相似文献

The eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) reefs are affected at irregular times by extremely cold temperatures that occur principally during La Niña events. The effects of these low temperatures on the survival of reef fishes were experimentally assessed by determining the critical thermal minimum (CTM) of 15 reef fish species from Gorgona Island (ETP), and comparing these CTMs with the records of temperature during past La Niña events. Among species, mean CTMs ranged from 10.8°C to 16.3°C, which were lower than the coldest temperature recorded during the last La Niña event (18°C during La Niña 1998-1999). However, the observed ranges of CTM for two species (Thalassoma lucassanum and Eucinostomus gracilis) extended above 18°C. These results suggest that most of the reef fishes we studied are physiologically tolerant to the cold temperatures encountered during La Niña, though decreases in at least two populations may be expected as a result of the mortality of less tolerant individuals. Although tolerant to cold temperatures, reef fish populations may still experience negative changes during La Niña, because other determinants in population maintenance (e.g. reproduction and recruitment) are more temperature sensitive. The effects of other cold phenomena on reef fish survival are also discussed herein.  相似文献

An intertidal population of the fissiparous sea star Coscinasterias tenuispina (Lamarck, 1816) was sampled over a 1 year period at Ponta de Itaipu, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Gonadal indices revealed an annual reproductive cycle. Spawning occurred in the late winter and early spring between August and November. Pyloric caecal indices did not show a clear annual cycle or a reciprocal relationship with gonadal indices. The population appears to be sustained only by fission, as only males were found. Fission occurred throughout the year, but was most frequent in the winter (July, August and September). Incidence of fission was correlated with the occurrence of the extremely low tides during daytime that exposes many specimens to air. Austral winter tides are low by day and high by night, while the austral summer tides are low by night and high by day. The most extreme annual deviation in seawater temperature is about 5°C. Larval recruitment seems to be negligible, since very small individuals were not found.  相似文献

In April-May 1998, mass coral bleaching was observed in the lagoon of Rangiroa Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia. Six months later, the extent of bleaching-induced coral mortality was assessed at three sites. Corals in the fast-growing genus Pocillopora had experienced >99% mortality. Many large colonies of the slow-growing genus Porites (mean horizontal cross-sectional area 5.8 m2) had also died - a phenomenon not previously observed in French Polynesia and virtually unprecedented world-wide. At one site, 25% of colonies, or 44% of the pre-bleaching cover of living Porites, experienced whole-colony mortality. At the two other sites, recently dead Porites accounted for 41% and 82% of the pre-bleaching live cover. Mortality in Porites was negatively correlated with depth between 1.5 and 5 m. Using a 50-year dataset of mean monthly sea surface temperature (SST), derived from ship- and satellite-borne instruments, we show that bleaching occurred during a period of exceptionally high summer SST. 1998 was the first year in which mean monthly SSTs exceeded the 1961-1990 upper 95% confidence limit (29.4°C) for a period of three consecutive months. We suggest that the sustained 3-month anomaly in local summer SST was a major cause of coral mortality, but do not discount the synergistic effect of solar radiation. Recovery of the size-frequency distribution of Porites colonies to pre-bleaching levels may take at least 100 years.  相似文献

Under natural conditions, sea bass eggs hatch in the open sea and young-of-the-year sea bass are found close to estuaries and enter brackish and even freshwater lagoons in the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic. The ontogeny of osmoregulation in the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (Linnaeus, 1758), was studied in different developmental stages, from hatching to large juveniles, exposed to a range of salinities at 17 °C. The experiments were carried out from March to August 1998 in southern France. The type of hyper-hypo-osmotic regulation did not change during development. All stages hyper-regulated at low salinity (under 10–11‰) and hypo-regulated at higher salinities. The acquisition of the full ability to hypo-regulate occurred in four steps. Osmoregulatory capacity was size- and age-dependent and reached its maximum for fish 17–26 mm long, 63–86 days after hatching. The iso-osmotic salinity was 10.2–11.6‰. Our results suggest that early development of osmoregulatory ability, and thus of salinity tolerance in sea bass, may provide an advantageous flexibility for the timing of migration towards low-salinity habitats. During three "Polarstern" cruises to the ice-covered Greenland Sea (spring 1997, summer 1994, autumn 1995) studies on the under-ice habitat (morphology, hydrography, ice-algal biomass) and on the macrofaunal, autochthonous under-ice amphipods (species diversity, abundance) were carried out in order to describe environmental controls and seasonal patterns in this community. In spring, the ice underside was rather smooth and whitish, while in summer melting structures and sloughed-off ice-algal threads were observed, in autumn detritus clumps accumulated in depressions at the ice underside. Only in summer, a thin layer of warm (up to -0.6°C) and less saline (as low as S=6.3) water was found at the ice-water interface above Polar Water. Integrated ice-algal biomass was highest during autumn (2.6 mg chl a m-2) and lowest during summer (1.2 mg chl a m-2). Four species of under-ice amphipods occurred in spring and summer (Apherusa glacialis, Onisimus glacialis, O. nanseni, Gammarus wilkitzkii), but only the last species was observed at the ice underside in autumn. A. glacialis and G. wilkitzkii were equally abundant in spring; A. glacialis dominated in summer. The highest total abundance of amphipods occurred during summer (31.9 ind. m-2), compared to lower abundances in spring and autumn (5.3 and 1.1 ind. m-2, respectively). A factor analysis revealed seasonal patterns in the data set, which mainly influenced A. glacialis, and species-specific relations between several environmental factors and the distribution of under-ice amphipods. Abundance of A. glacialis was closely related to the under-ice hydrography and ice-algal biomass, whereas the other amphipod species were more influenced by the under-ice morphology. It is therefore stated that the observed thinning of the Arctic sea ice and the resulting increased meltwater input and change in morphology of floes will have a profoundly adverse effect on the under-ice amphipods.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to sediment-associated tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTCl) were examined in the euryhaline European flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.). The effects were quantified by measuring the changes in sodium efflux; Na+/K+-ATPase activity; and the numbers, areas, and distribution of chloride cells in the gills of freshwater-adapted fish, following a rapid transfer to seawater. Following the transfer to seawater, the Na+/K+-ATPase activity and the sodium efflux were significantly increased in the control group but remained unchanged in the TBTCl-exposed group. The normal morphological changes to the gill epithelium associated with seawater adaptation, which involve chloride cell distribution, took place in the control group but were significantly inhibited or delayed in the TBTCl group. The results presented in this study lead to the conclusion that environmental concentrations of tri-n-butyltin chloride in sediments are capable of significantly disrupting both the physiological and the morphological components of iono-regulatory functions of an estuarine flatfish.  相似文献

The pinnotherid crab Pinnaxodes chilensis is a common commensal of the edible sea urchin Loxechinus albus along the Chilean coast. Several aspects of the reproductive biology of P. chilensis were examined between April and June 1999, along temperature and salinity gradients, at three sampling sites along the Chilean coast (23°45'S-39°24'S). Results demonstrated significant differences in egg number, egg volume, dry egg weight, and reproductive output of ovigerous females, between the studied populations of northern and central-southern Chile. Egg volume, egg dry weight, and reproductive output of females decreased from high to low latitudes, while egg number increased from high to low latitudes, exhibiting a clear trade-off with egg volume. It has been shown that changes in environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, salinity) along a latitudinal gradient, can generate clines in reproductive characteristics in both free-living and parasitic species.  相似文献
