Analyses of individual content of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) were carried out for all larval stages of Pagurus bernhardus and Carcinus maenas, and for newly metamorphosed crabs. Maximum range in total larval development is 12.8 to 165.8 g C, 3.2 to 35.1 g N, and 1.9 to 24.9 g H in P. bernhardus and 3.1 to 43.2 g C, 0.7 to 10.1 g N, and 0.4 to 6.3 g H in C. maenas. From these data energy equivalents were calculated. Maximum range in total larval life is 0.43 to 6.38 J ind. -1 in P. bernhardus and 0.1 to 1.49 J ind. -1 in C. maenas. There is a 32.4% mean loss of energy in P. bernhardus megalopa development; this seems to describe the normal developmental pattern in this stage. Biomass was determined as fresh and dry weight respectively. In Yemen, off the northwestern coast in the Gulf of Aden, the coralline algae Hydrolithon rupestre (Foslie) Penrose 1996 and H. murakoshii Iryu and Matsuda 1996 have been observed to overgrow and kill living Porites lutea Milne-Edwards and Haime, 1860. Similarly, Hydrolithon onkodes (Heydrich) Penrose and Woelkerling 1992 and H. rupestre were observed overgrowing Stylophora pistillata (Esper, 1797). Competitive interactions between P. lutea and H. murakoshii were monitored from 2006 to 2009 at two sites and showed an average linear growth of 8.3 (±1.9 SD) mm?year?1 over the coral. The small polyps of S. pistillata and P. lutea combined with putative chemical compounds produced by Hydrolithon spp. are likely to allow the coralline overgrowth. Although corallines can locally kill coral tissues, the CCA/coral interactions do not seem to affect the overall live coral cover at the study sites.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of cytogenetic analyses carried out on Porichthys plectrodon using conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding and silver staining techniques. A diploid chromosome count of 2n=44 was observed, consisting of 8 metacentric, 10 submetacentric, 6 subtelocentric and 20 acrocentric chromosomes. Differences in length made it possible to identify homologous chromosomes within the metacentric group. Constitutive heterochromatin was distributed as large pericentromeric blocks in pairs 1 and 2, while the rest of the chromosomes were marked in centromeric regions, some more conspicuously than others. One pair of small-sized acrocentric NOR-bearing chromosomes (21) was identified by the nucleolar regions located terminally on their short arms.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

An analysis of the horizontal and the vertical zonation of the Antarctic Isopoda, combined with knowledge of the geological history of Antarctica and isopod phylogeny, revealed that the isopod family Serolidae and subfamily Arcturinae are likely to have evolved from ancestors that inhabited a cold-temperate Gondwanian province. Antarctic species of other families, such as the Munnopsidae, Nannoniscidae, Desmosomatidae and Ischnomesidae, are likely to have evolved from deep-sea ancestors. It is deduced that emigration of South Patagonian species into the Southern Ocean, although possible, probably did not occur very often. Evolutionary phenomena such as continental-drift vicariance, radiation of species on the continental shelf of Antarctica, and active migration, including submergence and emergence mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

The results of a year-long study in which epibenthic invertebrates were collected monthly from seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) meadows along the Caribbean coast of Panamá and the Panamá Canal Zone are described in this paper. Differences in species composition and abundance among sites were primarily due to the proximity of surrounding habitats, especially coral reefs, which contain a number of species that utilize the seagrass meadows. In contrast to many previous characterizations of tropical marine habitats, important seasonal fluctuations in both species number and abundance took place at each of the sites. Data on breeding activity among several species of decapod crustaceans indicate year-round reproduction, although considerable seasonal differences occur in the percentage of ovigerous females. These interspecific differences in observed reproductive output may be explained by differences in life-cycle length, a factor not often considered in discussions of seasonal breeding patterns in tropical marine invertebrates. Overall species composition was qualitatively similar to that reported in comparable studies of tropical and subtropical seagrass meadows elsewhere, although caridean shrimp and xanthid orab species were reduced in number and total abundance were much lower than in previous studies.  相似文献

在两种N水平下(低N 10 mg.L-1和常N 30 mg.L-1),采用水培方法比较了分蘖盛期C3植物水稻(O ryzasativa)和C4植物稗草(Echinochloa crusgalli)在CO2浓度升高(550μmol.mol-1)和CO2浓度未升高(350μmol.mol-1)条件下的根系生长变化。结果表明,常N水平下高浓度CO2显著增加水稻和稗草的根干重、根体积、根总长和根直径,水稻对CO2浓度升高的响应强于稗草;低N胁迫时,高浓度CO2显著增加稗草的根干重、根体积和根总长,而对水稻生长无明显促进作用。在两种N水平下,高浓度CO2均显著降低水稻和稗草根系N含量,而C含量上升不明显,导致C/N比值显著增加。高浓度CO2显著降低水稻和稗草单位根重根毛数,这可能是CO2浓度升高条件下根系活力显著降低的形态学原因之一。  相似文献

No differences in development time and mortality were detected between starved and fed laboratory raised megalopa of Pagurus bernhardus. The average time of development in 138 megalopa was determined as 7.3±0.1 (95% CI) days. During megalopa development P. bernhardus loses about 7% in dry weight (DW), 17% in carbon (C), 6% in nitrogen (N) and 17% in hydrogen (H). During development C/N ratio and individual energy content descend about 14 and 22% respectively. Weight specific energy content decreases by 17% in the first 3 d and remains constant at 12.3±0.3 (95% CI) J·(mg DW)-1 thereafter. About another 25% in individual energy content was lost by molting to crabs. The measured compounds do not follow a steady decrease. The possibility is discussed that a period of low energy cost (about the first half of development) alternates with times of higher energy expenditure mainly based on lipids. A fixed physiological program different from starvation capability is indicated for P. bernhardus megalopae. By comparing megalopae hatched in two different seasons and years reference is given to the variability in growth pattern.  相似文献

Biodegradation experiments of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were studied with mixed bacteria culture under aerobic conditions. An easy‐to‐handle clean‐up procedure was developed for PAH and their metabolites simultaneously as well as a gc‐ms‐method to identify and quantify these compounds.

Anthracene and dibenzothiophene are completely degradable in an aqeous system, whereas biodegradation of benzo(k)fluoranthene and benzo(h)quinoline is possible only in an oil‐in‐water‐system with dodecane as cosubstrate. No degradation of nitronaphthalene was observed in aqueous systems. New metabolites are 2,3‐dihydroxybenzothiophene, hydroxybenzothiophenecarbonic acid and benzothiophenequinone for dibenzothiophene and hydroxyfluoranthenic acid for benzo(k)flouranthene. Whereas the former metabolites are degradable under the experimental conditions, the latter accumulates during the degradation experiment.

The results are important for microbiological wastewater treatment, since knowledge of biodegradation processes is indespensable for the successful treatment of PAH‐containing wastewater.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the potential of the earthworm Eiseniella tetraedra (Savigny, 1826) as a bioindicator for cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) exposure. The importance of earthworms in metal pollution monitoring is widely recognized in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, the levels of Cd and Pb in soils and earthworm tissues were studied at two locations, Polur Falls and a riverside area located in Abali, in the Elburz Mountains in Iran. At both locations the concentration of Cd and Pb in earthworms was higher than in the surrounding soils and a significant difference was found between the two stations, the latter probably attributable to the (1) amount of pesticides that are used for crop treatment in Abali and (2) presence there of clay, which is known to be rich in Cd. Data indicate that E. tetraedra is an efficient bioaccumulator of Cd and Pb and might act thus serve as a bioindicator of exposure.  相似文献

Many bacteria live in close association with sponges. Within these consortia, molecules of communication such as quorum-sensing and hormone-like molecules may occur in order to regulate the partnership. Of particular interest, bacterial N-acyl-l-homoserine lactones (AHLs) were screened in supernatants from Suberites domuncula-associated bacteria using an E. coli bioluminescent reporter system. These sponge-associated bacteria were beforehand isolated on several media supplemented or not with a sponge extract to attempt to isolate sponge-specific bacteria. Out of 81 AHL-producing bacteria, three strains requiring sponge extract to grow were selected for AHL characterization. The in vitro produced AHLs, that is, in bacterial culture supernatants, were identified as N-(3-butanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone and N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone and quantified using LC–ESI–MS/MS. The in vivo production of AHLs by sponge-associated bacteria has also been demonstrated in a healthy host for the first time: N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, N-(3-hexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, and N-(3-heptanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone. This AHL production in sponges may suggest a potential role of these molecules between sponge-associated bacteria and/or between sponge-associated bacteria and the sponge.  相似文献

Summary One aspect of behavioral ecology that has received considerable attention, especially by students of social insects, is the relative amount of energy invested by parents in the rearing of male versus female offspring. Sexual selection theory makes predictions about how individuals should allocate their total investment in the sexes. To test these predictions we must accurately quantify the relative cost incurred by a parent in the production of an average individual of either sex. Body weight ratios are the most common estimate of cost ratio, but the correspondence between offspring body weight and energetic investment on the part of the parent has rarely been determined. Calliopsis (Hypomacrotera) persimilis is a solitary, ground-nesting bee whose natural history makes it particularly convenient for studies of investment patterns and foraging behavior. Each day females construct and provision from 1 to 6 cells in linear, closely-spaced series. Each cell is provisioned with pollen from Physalis Wrightii flowers, which is collected on two or three foraging trips. However, the temporal sequence in which two- and three-trip foraging bouts occur is not random. Females invariably begin each day provisioning cells with three trips worth of pollen and usually switch to provisioning the latter cells of the day with just two trips worth of pollen. The sex of the offspring within the same co-linear series of cells also varies non-randomly — female offspring predominate in the first cells of each series and male offspring in the latter cells. The correspondence between the number of foraging trips to provision a cell, the total time spent foraging, and offspring sex was determined for 36 cells. The data indicate a close, though not absolute, relationship between the number of foraging trips and the sex of the offspring: males usually received two trips of pollen, though some received three, whereas female offspring invariably received three trips worth of pollen. A number of potential estimates of the relative cost of female and male offspring production were calculated. Estimates of the cost ratio based on the amount of time spent foraging, adult dry body weight, and pollen ball dry weight all give similar values. Female offspring receive an energetic investment of from 1.3 to 1.5 times that of males. These results support the use of adult dry body weight ratios in the estimation of cost ratios.  相似文献

Summary Changes in the density of beech scale infestation (Cryptococcus fagisuga) of a mature beech stand (Fagus sylvatica) were investigated after gap-cutting in limed and unlimed areas bordering on the gaps and in untreated areas over a 5-year period. Parallelly the concentrations of sucrose, protein amino acids, and procyanidins were examined in the inner and outer bark of non-infested beech trees and beeches infested by beech scale.Irrespective of liming in the areas bordering on the gaps the proportion of beech trees with increasing beech scale infestation was significantly higher, the proportion of beeches with diminishing infestation was significantly lower than in the untreated control areas. Trees with the same infestation tendency occurred in clusters.Physiological defence reactions in the inner and outer bark of the infested beech trees were registrated as an increase in the procyanidin content and a decrease in the protein amino acid content. A change in the outer bark—inner bark—ratio of the infested beech trees showed a transfer of compounds between the inner and outer bark. During the period of observation long-lasting shifts occurred in the pattern of compounds of the bark irrespective of actual infestation intensity.  相似文献

Observations were made of the chromosomes of the burrowing barnacle Trypetesa lampas (Hancock). A method of squash preparation was used, which incorporated staining the material in a solution of 2% orcein in 45% acetic acid. The diploid number of chromosomes of T. lampas was found to be 12 and the haploid number 6, in both males and females. No obvious chromosomal mechanism of sex determination was found. There was, therefore, no cytogenetic confirmation of Kühnert's view (1934) that the sex of the larva is predetermined genetically. During mitosis in the females and embryos of Trypetesa lateralis Tomlinson and Kochlorine floridana Wells and Tomlinson, the diploid number of chromosomes was found to be about 14. The numbers of chromosomes in the 3 species of Acrothoracica studied were approximately half those observed in all 12 species of Thoracica and all 5 species of Rhizocephala previously investigated.  相似文献

The Papnash pond is an oldest pond of Bidar, Kamataka state. It is situated at 77 degrees-32 longitude and 17 degrees-55 latitude, located 551 m above mean sea level. It has been used daily for bathing and washing of clothes by large number of pilgrims. The samples were collected fortnightly during October 1999 to September 2000 to analyze physico-chemical and biological status of water, such as temperature, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, chloride, organic matter, nitrite, phosphate, sulphate and algal flora. Variations in physico-chemical parameters were noted. The results also revealed that the pond water was hard, alkaline and polluted. Episodes of hypoxia are common in the marine environment, and their ecological effects depend, in part, on their severity and duration. Many species of decapod crustaceans reside in areas with fluctuating oxygen regimens. Physiological mechanisms enhance the ability of these crustaceans to cope with acute episodes of hypoxia. Southern king crab, Lithodes santolla, fishery is important in the south of South America, and some data describe fishing zones with low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (3.5 mgO2 l−1, i.e., 8.3 kPa). Our main objective was to evaluate the effect of dissolved oxygen level on respiratory metabolism, nutritional physiology, and immunological condition of L. santolla juveniles. Individual animals were exposed for 10 days to different oxygen tensions (2.1, 4.2, 8.5, 12.7, and 21.1 kPa) to quantify the oxygen consumption rate; thereafter, blood oxyhemocyanin (Hc), protein concentration, as well as hemocytes, were sampled. Freeze-dried animals were dissected, and digestive gland metabolites (glycogen, protein, glucose, cholesterol, acylglycerol, and lactate) and digestive enzyme activity (general protease, trypsin, and chymotrypsin), as well as gill lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, were quantified. In the present study, Lithodes santolla showed a critical oxygen tension between 4 and 9 kPa, indicating that this crab species is more sensitive to DO than other crustacean species. Protein and Hc concentrations followed a similar pattern to that of oxygen consumption. Digestive gland glycogen and protein concentration did not change after 10 days at different oxygen exposures, but glucose, cholesterol, and acylglycerol concentrations decreased linearly and proportionally to the available oxygen in the water. As in other decapods, chymotrypsin showed over 90% of the total quantified proteases activity. Chymotrypsin activity together with total proteases and trypsin was not affected by the environmental oxygen tension. Gill LDH and digestive gland lactate followed a similar increase at lower environmental oxygen tension but dropped sharply at the lowest tension (2.1 kPa). Dissolved oxygen affected also the immune system through reduction of hemocytes. This could provide a critical window for opportunistic pathogens to become established when crabs are exposed to hypoxic conditions. L. santolla juveniles show a moderate tolerance to low oxygen availability by modifying the concentration of hemolymph proteins, mainly OxyHc, some digestive gland metabolites, and by activating the anaerobic metabolism. This allows L. santolla juveniles to inhabit temporarily low oxygen zones in the deep ocean and suggests an advantage for culture conditions.  相似文献

Summary The sex pheromone of the grain aphid,Sitobion avenae (Fab.), is identified as (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, for which specific olfactory cells are located in the secondary rhinaria of the male antenna. The related (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol was not produced by females in significant amounts (ca 10,000-fold less than the nepetalactone), although cells in the male antenna were found that responded specifically to this compound. Behavioural activity in the linear track ol-factometer showed attraction of males to the nepetalactone, but not to the nepetalactol.  相似文献
