The bioavailability of 2,3,7,8-TCDD from municipal incinerator fly ash to freshwater fish was determined. It was observed that carp exposed to fly ash containing all 22 TCDD isomers, or the solvent extract of the fly ash, retain only 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Exposures with fly ash appears to follow a dose response relationship for bioconcentration, however, the bioavailability of 2,3,7,8-TCDD was not directly related to the level of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in fly ash for two fly ash samples studied.  相似文献

Simplified thermal formation experiments have been conducted using dioxin-free fly ash as a catalyst with many kinds of combustible samples such as newspaper, kerosene, paraffin, PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene) and PVC. Chlorine sources were PVC, NaCl and HCl. The combustion of samples containing chlorine in the absence of dioxin-free fly ash produced dioxins at a low level although HCl was present in the gas stream. On the other hand, the combustion of samples without chlorine with dioxin-free fly ash increased dioxins formation to a level around 10 times higher than that upon heating dioxin-free fly ash alone. This result is considered to be due to the presence of metal chloride in the fly ash and hydrocarbons in the gas stream. The combustion of samples containing either an organic or inorganic chlorine source or using a HCl stream with dioxin-free fly ash increased dioxin level dramatically.  相似文献

A low cost and eco-friendly technology to bioremediate toxic metals associated with fly ash dumps that contaminate ground and surface water in and around fly ash settling ponds, was investigated. The impact of augmentation of fly ash tolerant bacterial strains, isolated from Typha latifolia growing naturally on fly ash dumps, was studied for metal extractability. It was observed that most of the bacterial strains either induced the bioavailability of Fe, Zn and Ni or immobilized Pb, Cr, Cu, Cd in the fly ash. However, there were few exceptions also. In case of Ni, eight strains enhanced metal mobility, while others caused metal immobilization. The findings also suggest that metal solublization and immobilization are specific to bacterial strains. While induced bioavailability of metals by bacteria may be used to accelerate the phytoextraction of metals from fly ash by hyper accumulator plants, immobilization of metals can check their migration to water reservoirs and reduce the human suffering in affected areas. Thus, bacteria serve the dual purpose and may result in the microbe- assisted phytoremediation of contaminated sites.  相似文献

Fly ash extracts were fed to male hamster (single dose), male rat (single dose and multiple dose), pregnant and lactating female rat (multiple dose). The retention of four isomers, 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 2,3,7,8-TCDF, 1,2,3,7,8-PnCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF, was studied in the liver of the adults, foetuses and liver of the sucklings.

Liver retention was structure dependent and different for both species. Transportation of the isomers via the mother milk was 50–100 times more effective than via the placenta.

After a single intravenous dose of fly ash extract to male rats the elimination of these four isomers was studied in the liver, during a period of 10 days. Elimination rates for 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PnCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF were in the same range. Pharmacokinetic calculations were done on both tetra congeners, to obtain information about the validity of the published Ke values in the multiple dose experiments with male rats.

For 2,3,7,8-TCDF the Ke value was applicable, but for 2,3,7,8-TCDD the validity of the Ke could not be determined.  相似文献

The involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been implicated in the toxicity of various pesticides. Our study was designed to investigate the induction of oxidative stress by cypermethrin; a Type II pyrethroid in rat liver and kidney. In addition, the protective role of sesame oil against the toxicity of cypermethrin was investigated. Animals were divided into four equal groups; the first group used as control while groups 2, 3 and 4 were treated with sesame oil (5 mL/kg b.w), cypermethrin (12 mg/kg b.w) and the combination of both sesame oil (5 mL/kg b.w) plus cypermethrin (12 mg/kg b.w), respectively. Rats were daily administered with their respective doses for 30 days by gavage. Repeated oral administration of cypermethrin was found to reduce the level of glutathione (GSH) and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes. While, the level of TBARS was elevated indicating the presence of oxidative stress. The activities of LDH, AST and ALT were decreased in the liver extract while increased in the plasma of the cypermethrin-treated group. Also, the levels of urea and creatinine were significantly increased after treatment with cypermethrin. Liver and kidney injury was confirmed by the histological changes. In conclusion, the administration of sesame oil provided significant protection against cypermethrin-induced oxidative stress, biochemical changes, histopathological damage and genomic DNA fragmentation.  相似文献

Individual particles from coal- and oil-fired power plants were analyzed by scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer to investigate size, morphology, and composition. Samples were collected on filters by dichotomous sampler in the fine ( <2.5 μm aerodynamic diameter) and coarse (2.5 to 5–10 μm) fractions. In both fractions coal fly ash particles were predominantly ( > 95%) smooth, mineral spheres. No cenospheres (perforated hollow spheres) were detected, and almost 90% of the mass concentrations occurred in the coarse fraction. Sulfur as lared as a surface layer on the mineral core; the abundances of Fe and S were highly variable. The Al/Si ratio was fairly constant for most of the spheres but not for the relatively few Fe-rich or non-spherical coal fly ash particles. Over 90% of the mass of oil fly ash occurred in the fine fraction. The size distribution of chemical and morphological properties of individual oil fly ash particles was found to be trimodal. Oil fly ash particles smaller than 0.7 μ (geometric diameter) were non-spherical and relatively pure in sulfate, and 90% of such particles were smaller than 0.5 μm; V or Ni could be detected in 50% to 60% of such particles larger than 0.3 μm. Those particles in the 0.7–3 μm range of geometric diameters were predominantly spherical and of mineral composition, highly variable in Al, Si, P, Ca, Ti and Fe; 50–60% of them contained detectable amounts of V or Ni. We performed experiments on two different matrices with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as precursor to Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD)/F. A municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) and a model fly ash were spiked in two different ways. The experiments demonstrated a three times higher formation potential of the trichlorophenol to PCDD on MSWI fly ash compared with the model fly ash used. For both fly ashes the PCDD yield was higher when gaseous trichlorophenol was fed continuously compared to mixing the fly ashes prior to the experiments with the total amount of the precursor. Despite dilution of the fly ashes tenfold with an inactive matrix the conversion of the chlorophenol was very high.  相似文献

The isomer dependent bioavailability of PCDDs and PCDFs from municipal incinerator fly ash to freshwater fish was determined. It was observed that carp exposed to fly ash in a continuous flow exposure readily accumulated select isomers of PCDDs and PCDFs. A preference for greater retention of isomers substituted in the 2, 3, 7 and 8 positions was observed. The Bioavailability Index (ratio of contaminant level in fish to level in fly ash) decreased with increasing degree of chlorination.  相似文献

Adsorption of arsenic(V) onto fly ash: a speciation-based approach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Arsenic (As) poses a significant water quality problem and challenge for the environmental engineers and scientists in the world. The large volume of coal fly ash produced around the world is a potentially significant anthropogenic source of arsenic. Currently the leaching behavior of arsenic from fly ash is not well understood. Batch methods were used in this study to investigate arsenic leaching using a raw ash, and arsenic adsorption using a clean, washed ash. Experimental results indicated that pH had a significant effect on arsenic leaching or adsorption. Between pH 3 and 7, less arsenic was in the dissolved phase. When pH was less than 3 or greater than 7, increasing amounts of arsenic were leached or desorbed from fly ash. The leaching and adsorption behavior of arsenic was interpreted with the speciation of surface sites and arsenic. In a new approach, a speciation-based model was developed to quantify the arsenic adsorption as a function of pH and surface acidity parameters. This work is important in offering insight into the leaching mechanism of arsenic from coal fly ash, and providing a robust model based upon specific, measurable parameters to quantify arsenic adsorption by other solid media in addition to fly ash.  相似文献

Calcination is the second step in a washing-calcination-conversion system in which treated municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash and bottom ash can be reused as raw material in the cement industry and can decompose or stabilize hazardous compounds, reduce residue amounts, and alter residue characteristics. In this research, only fly ash is discussed. Chloride reduction is important if treated fly ash is to be reused in cement; however, the relationship between washed fly ash properties and chloride reduction by calcination is not well understood. This study used washed residues of three types of fly ash-raw fly ash (RFA) from the boiler or economizer of an incineration system, fly ash collected in a bag filter injected with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) for acid removal (CaFA), and fly ash collected in a bag filter injected with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) for acid removal (NaFA)-in calcination experiments with varying temperature (400-1100 degrees C) and atmosphere (100% nitrogen [N2] at 25 mL/min or 10% oxygen [O2] [90% N2] at fluxes of 25, 50, and 75 mL/min). From the perspective of chloride reduction, heating to 1000 degrees C with 1-hr heating time, 1-hr holding time, and an atmosphere of 10% O2/90% N2 was most suitable for calcination. Under these conditions, chloride levels were reduced by 91, 52, and 96% in washed residues of RFA, CaFA, and NaFA, respectively. Among the washed residues, the weight of the washed residue of NaFA decreased the most.  相似文献

实验研究了铁屑粉煤灰组合处理含磷废水的除磷效果.通过单因素实验,考查了铁屑粉煤灰质量比、反应时间、pH值和投加量对除磷效果的影响.实验结果表明,该法除磷的最优条件为铁屑和粉煤灰的质量比为2∶1,反应时间为20 min,pH值为6,投加量为20 g/L.在最优实验条件下磷的去除率达到了97.5%.对比了该法和粉煤灰吸附法与传统铁屑法的除磷效果.与单一粉煤灰吸附法和传统铁屑法除磷的结果相比较,铁屑粉煤灰组合除磷的方法具有明显优势.  相似文献

Heavy metal pollution is a common environmental problem all over the world. The purpose of the research is to examine the applicability of bagasse fly ash (BFA)—an agricultural waste of sugar industry used for the synthesis of zeolitic material. The zeolitic material are used for the uptake of Pb(II) and Cd(II) heavy metal. Bagasse fly ash is used as a native material for the synthesis of zeolitic materials by conventional hydrothermal treatment without (conventional zeolitic bagasse fly ash (CZBFA)) and with electrolyte (conventional zeolitic bagasse fly ash in electrolyte media (ECZBFA)) media. Heavy metal ions Pb(II) and Cd(II) were successfully seized from aqueous media using these synthesized zeolitic materials. In this study, the zeolitic materials were well characterized by different instrumental methods such as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, XRF, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopic microphotographs. The presence of analcime, phillipsite, and zeolite P in adsorbents confirms successful conversion of native BFA into zeolitic materials. Seizure modeling of Pb(II) and Cd(II) was achieved by batch sorption experiments, isotherms, and kinetic studies. These data were used to compare and evaluate the zeolitic materials as potential sorbents for the uptake of heavy metal ions from an aqueous media. The Langmuir isotherm correlation coefficient parameters best fit the equilibrium data which indicate the physical sorption. Pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion model matches best which indicates that the rate of sorption was controlled by film diffusion. The column studies were performed for the practical function of sorbents, and breakthrough curves were obtained, which revealed higher sorption capacity as compared to batch method. Synthesized zeolitic material (CZBFA and ECZBFA), a low-cost sorbent, was proven as potential sorbent for the uptake of Pb(II) and Cd(II) heavy metal ions.  相似文献

This study identified material with high phosphorus sorption suitable for bioretention filter media. Materials examined were fly ash, two expanded shales, peat moss, limestone, and two common Oklahoma soils--Teller loam and Dougherty sand. The peat moss was a phosphorus source, while the two soils, limestone, and one expanded shale had only modest sorption capacity. One expanded shale and the fly ash had significant phosphorus sorption. Fly ash is unsuitable for use in a pure form, as a result of its low permeability, but phosphorus sorption on the sand was increased significantly with the incorporation of small amounts of fly ash. Column leaching experiments found that the sand with 2.5 and 5% fly ash and the better expanded shale had linear, non-equilibrium transport retardation factors of 272, 1618, and 185, with first-order rate coefficients of 0.153, 0.0752, and 0.113 hour(-1), respectively. Desorption experiments showed that the phosphorus sorption on the sand/fly ash mixture is largely nonreversible. Transport simulation assuming a 1-m-deep sand/fly ash treatment layer, with 5% of the watershed area, showed that the sand/fly ash filter media could effectively treat 1 mg/L influent for 12 years in a paved watershed and 34 years in a grassed watershed before exceeding Oklahoma's scenic rivers' phosphorus criterion of 0.037 mg/L. The toxicity and toxic potential of fly ash were assessed, using rainbow trout yolk sac fry. In contrast to fly ash itself, extracts of fly ash were extremely toxic, producing typical toxicopathological features of TCDD-intoxication. By comparison with earlier experiments using pure 2,3,7,8-TCDD, the toxic potential of fly ash was roughly estimated to be 75–125 ng.g?1 toxic aequivalents TCDD. Obviously, this toxic potential is attributable for a minor part to 2,3,7,8-TCDD and for the greater part to the other chlorinated dioxin congeners and the dibenzofurans, present in fly ash.  相似文献

Fly ash is a particulate substance containing metal oxides, carbon and other microelements. In this study, fly ashes with different quantities of carbon and minerals prepared by a thermal process in the laboratory were used as adsorbents to investigate the contribution of precipitation and adsorption to the removal of aqueous Cu(II). Experimental results showed that the specific surface area of fly ash increased linearly with the quantity of carbon. The specific surface areas of the carbon and mineral fraction were 60 m2/g and 0.68 m2/g, respectively. The specific adsorption capacities of carbon ranged from 2.2 to 2.8 mg Cu/g carbon, while those for mineral were only about 0.63 to approximately 0.81 mg Cu/g mineral. Consequently, the carbon fraction in fly ash was important in the removal of Cu(II) at pH 5. However, Cu(II) removal owing to precipitation increases with a decreasing carbon fraction and the contribution of copper precipitation was estimated to be approximately 23% to approximately 82% of total removal, depending on the carbon fraction of fly ash.  相似文献
