The purpose of this study was to assess certain physiological responses of Lemna minor L. (duckweed) and Allium cepa L. (onion) to aquatic mercury at low concentrations. Following a 96-h exposure of plants to nutrient medium contaminated with known levels of mercuric chloride (HgCl(2)), 0.001 to 4 mg litre(-1) (0.0007 to 2.95 mg Hg litre(-1)) or methyl mercuric chloride (MeHgCl(2)), 0.0001 to 0.1 mg litre(-1) (0.0007 to 0.07 mg Hg litre(-1)), the physiological endpoints measured were the growth of fronds (Lemna minor) or roots (Allium cepa), and catalase and peroxidase activities in both plant assays. The EC(50) for HgCl(2) on the basis of the growth curve of Lemna minor was found to be 2.1 mg litre(-1). HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) were lethal to L. minor at concentrations of 4 and 0.01 mg litre(-1), respectively. The range of low concentrations that accelerated growth as well as enzymic activities in L. minor was 0.004 to 0.04 mg litre(-1) for HgCl(2) and 0.001 mg litre(-1) for MeHgCl(2). HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) induced maximum enzymic activity in Lemna fronds at concentrations of 0.008 and 0.0005 mg litre(-1), respectively. In Allium roots, catalase activity was accelerated at all the concentrations of HgCl(2) (0.001-2 mg litre(-1)) and MeHgCl(2) (0.0001-0.1 mg litre(-1)) tested. The activity of peroxidase was, however, accelerated by HgCl(2) at concentration range 0.01-1.0 mg litre(-1), or by MeHgCl(2) at 0.001 mg litre(-1). The concentrations of HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) that induced the highest enzymic activity in Allium roots were 0.05 mg litre(-1) and 0.001 mg litre(-1), respectively.  相似文献

In the hydroblasting of ships' boiler tubes, a wastewater high in nitrite (as high as 1200 mg litre(-1)) is produced by the US Navy. This research has evaluated the use of a suspended-growth biological system to treat this wastewater by denitrification. Two biological treatment configurations were evaluated (direct denitrification versus nitrification/denitrification) with nitrification/denitrification producing better nitrite removal efficiencies (54 to 62% versus 40%, respectively). The introduction of metals (cadmium, chromium, lead, copper and iron) in concentrations typical for this wastewater did not inhibit the nitrite removal efficiencies. The influent metal concentrations ranged from 0.02 mg litre(-1) for cadmium to 22 mg litre(-1) for iron and the metal removal efficiencies ranged from 4.8% for cadmium to 50% for copper. Increasing sludge age resulted in improved nitrite removal efficiencies (52%, 57% and 74% for sludge ages of 4, 6 and 8 days, respectively). The resulting biokinetic constants were similar to those reported by others for lower influent concentrations of nitrite or nitrate (Ygs=0.02 mg/mg; Ygn=0.16 mg/mg; Yb=0.8 mg/mg; and b=0.006 h(-1)).  相似文献

To simulate runoff from agricultural lands, atrazine was applied to aquatic enclosures (112 m(3)) on 1 June 1983 at a concentration of 0.1 mg litre(-1). Thirty-five days later the nominal concentration was increased to 0.155 mg litre(-1). Treated enclosures became clearer with Secchi disc readings of 3.6 m compared to non-treated controls (2.9 m). Less than 5% of the first atrazine addition disappeared during the first 35 days and little effect on biological activity was observed. However, with the second enrichment the rate of loss of atrazine was rapid (t(1/2) = 150 days), ammonium, calcium, dissolved inorganic carbon and nitrate levels were higher, while oxygen, chlorophyll, dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon concentrations were lower in the treated enclosures. These water quality changes cannot be explained by herbicide-water chemistry interactions alone, thereby suggesting an indirect effect as a consequence of atrazine inhibition on photosynthesis and possibly other microbial processes.  相似文献

Chemical and biological responses to simultaneous additions of acid, aluminium and lime were investigated in contiguous 250m-reaches of a chronically acidic stream in Wales. Treatments were applied for 24 h, and from the upstream end were as follows: zone A-untreated, pH 5.0, 0.37 mg litre(-1) filterable Al; zone B-acidified to pH 4.5, 0.40 mg Al litre(-1) (47% of Al attributed to release from the stream bed due to acid additions); zone C-acidified to pH 4.5 and Al dosed to 0.67 mg litre(-1); zone D-dosed with limestone slurry, resulting in pH 7.2, 0.13 mg Al litre(-1). In all reaches, the chemistry of the interstitial water at depths of 0.15 and 0.3 m never fell below pH 5.5, with corresponding decreases in Al and increases in base cation concentrations. Brown trout, Salmo trutta, and crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, held in the stream showed decreases in plasma [Na(+)] and haemolymph [Na(+)], respectively, in all acidic zones (A, B, C): these responses were mitigated by liming (zone D). Thus both chronic and simulated episodic levels of pH and dissolved Al were sub-lethally toxic to test species of aquatic fauna. This experiment also demonstrates a stream bed source/sink of Al, and the availability of a possible refuge from acidic surface waters within the substratum.  相似文献

There is some evidence from southern Britain that shallow groundwaters in non-carbonate lithologies may be affected by acidic deposition. To investigate this, interstitial water profiles down to 12 m have been obtained from unsaturated sands or semi-consolidated sandstones from the Folkestone Beds (Lower Greensand) of Surrey and the Sherwood Sandstone of the West Midlands. The pH of the interstitial waters generally increased with depth and reflected an increase in the base saturation of the exchange complex. Beneath the highly acidic surface soil horizons (pH 3.0-3.5), interstitial waters with a pH of 4.0-4.5 were found down to depths of several metres. The pH progressively increased to around pH 5.5 because of base cation desorption and the weathering of silicate minerals. High concentrations of aluminium (10-20 mg litre(-1)) and other metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, Be) were found in the interstitial water in the upper unsaturated zone. Most metal concentrations were strongly pH-dependent but also reflected the geochemical characteristics of the parent sands or sandstones. H+ and trace element concentrations were slightly higher beneath areas of afforestation than beneath heathland. The downward fluxes of solutes have been estimated using rainfall-derived chloride as a non-reactive solute. The profiles retain a record of 10-20 years input allowing the past inputs from SO4 and other species to be estimated using solute/chloride ratios. Cation exchange sites are probably depleted over a period of decades and there can be a significant decrease in the unsaturated zone pH as a result of increased or sustained acidic deposition. The shallow groundwater environment (0-15 m) in non-carbonate terrains is therefore a sensitive environment where high metal concentrations may be generated and may ultimately lead to water quality problems in shallow water supplies.  相似文献

The effect of the oil-spill dispersant Corexit 9527 on egg-hatching rate of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) was studied by using an innovated flow-through bioassay technique. This bioassay method relies on the fact that M. rosenbergii fertilized eggs when detached from the mother prawn were able to hatch artificially. The flow-through system generated a stable and good water quality environment for hatching the eggs successfully. The Corexit 9527 had a pronounced effect on hatching rate of the M. rosenbergii eggs. In the control, the hatching rate of the eggs was 95.55% +/- 1.74%. However, it was reduced drastically with increasing concentrations of Corexit 9527. A 100% inhibition of egg hatchability was found when the level of Corexit 9527 was higher than 250 mg litre(-1). The EC(50) and the EC(95) values estimated by the probit method were 80.4 +/- 5.5 mg litre(-1) and 193.5 +/- 39.9 mg litre(-1) respectively (P = 0.05). The recommended safety level of Corexit 9527 for M. rosenbergii in Malaysian estuarine waters is below 40 mg litre(-1).  相似文献

Data on nitrate nitrogen were collected weekly during 1984 from 136 sites on streams in upland Wales. Mean nitrate concentrations in summer (0.02 to 1.5 mg litre(-1)) were significantly lower (P<0.001) than in winter (0.02 to 1.26 mg litre(-1)), particularly at sites with mature conifers (>30 years old). Mean concentrations increased significantly with the average age of conifers on each catchment (P<0.001), and with increasing areal cover by trees over 30 years old (P<0.001). Nitrate concentrations increased significantly with stream total hardness (P<0.001), possibly reflecting nitrogen mineralisation in soils of higher base status. Concentrations also increased with stream chloride (P<0.001), which is predominantly atmospherically derived, implying that increased nitrate occurred where general atmospheric inputs of solutes were increased. After accounting for variation in hardness, residual nitrate concentrations still increased with the average age of the conifers (P<0.001), and with catchment cover by mature trees (P<0.001). We infer that some additional nitrate under older conifers is thus independent of catchment sources associated with increasing hardness. Two possibilities are increased inputs and decreased retention of nitrogen within the ecosystem of maturing conifer forest. Residual nitrate after accounting for variations in chloride also increased significantly with conifer age (P<0.01) and cover (P<0.01), a pattern implying that some sources of nitrate may also be independent of increased sea-salt deposition. We allude to the possibility that additional nitrogen deposition adds to nitrogen throughputs from maturing forests, and we discuss the potential ecological role of additional nitrogen in runoff.  相似文献

Clopyralid, picloram, 2,4-D and a mixture of 2,4-D plus picloram, (Tordon 202C) were added to the water of 1 m square enclosures in a prairie wetland in Saskatchewan, Canada to produce concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 mg active ingredient litre(-1). Effects on the submersed macrophytes, Potamogeton pectinatus and Myriophyllum sibiricum, were monitored by taking repeated measurements of plant weight, flower and tuber production and inspecting for injuries at 30 and 60 days after application. Clopyralid did not inhibit weight gain (growth) in either species, but stimulated growth and flowering by M. sibiricum at 0.01 mg litre(-1) and tuber production by P. pectinatus at both rates. The low rate of 2,4-D stimulated flowering by M. sibiricum and tuber production by P. pectinatus, whereas the high rate inhibited growth of M. sibiricum and injured both species. Picloram did not affect growth of either species, but injured M. sibiricum at both concentrations and inhibited flowering at 0.1 mg litre(-1). Tordon 202C at 0.1 mg litre(-1) caused reduced growth and flowering in M. sibiricum and injured both species; 0.01 mg litre(-1) also injured M. sibiricum. Mortality resulted only from Tordon 202C and 2,4-D. Field data are lacking to assess the extent to which submerged macrophytes in prairie ponds are exposed to harmful concentrations of herbicide from aerial spraying, drift from ground application, runoff or wind erosion of soil.  相似文献

The current status of global marine pollution by TBT (tributyltin), TPT (triphenyltin) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was examined by determining their concentrations in squid livers. TBT and TPT concentrations in squid livers were higher in coastal waters than in open oceans. The highest values of TBT and TPT of 279 and 519 ng g(-1), respectively, were detected off Japan. TBT concentrations were higher in the northern hemisphere than those of the southern hemisphere organisms. TPT was not detected in squid livers collected in the southern hemisphere. The variation in TBT and TPT concentrations between the northern and the southern hemisphere was greater than those recognized for PCBs distribution in the world oceans. This global distribution pattern of TBT, TPT and PCB seemed to reflect their usage (amount, period and manner of utilization). Approximate TBT concentrations in seawater estimated from bioaccumulation factor in the squid liver were 0.1-5.8 ng litre(-1) in waters around Japan, tr-0.8 ng litre(-1) in oceanic waters in the northern hemisphere, and tr-0.4 ng litre(-1) in the southern hemisphere oceans.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation and toxicity of zinc in Cladophora glomerata from two populations in the River Roding, Essex, UK, were examined in experimental laboratory flowing-water channels. Plants were subjected to zinc concentrations ranging from 0 to 4.0 mg litre(-1) at current velocities of 20-33 cm s(-1) for up to 3 h. Zinc in algal tissue was then quantified and toxicity was assessed by the ability of the alga to grow in a recovery medium after the experimental treatment. There was little difference in zinc bioaccumulation between Cladophora from the site showing mild organic pollution and that from the site subjected to considerable inputs from urban and motorway runoff. Uptake of zinc increased with increasing concentration in the test solution and was linear and proportional up to 0.4 mg litre(-1). Three stages of uptake were identified with the most dramatic accumulation occurring in the first 10 min. Experimental concentration factors ranged from 1.9-5.2 x 10(3), which were in agreement with those previously obtained in the field. Cellular damage was evident in Cladophora subjected to 0.4 mg litre(-1) zinc, and this increased with increasing zinc concentration, thus leading to the conclusion that, at times, the levels of zinc found in the river could be potentially damaging.  相似文献

The accumulation by oysters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from coal dust entering the estuarine environment has been postulated in the vicinity of coal transfer operations. Oysters Crassostrea virginica were exposed to coal dust plus 15 day leachate at concentrations of 10 mg litre(-1) and 1 mg litre(-1) coal dust for 28 days in a flow-through test system. Potential effects of the exposures were measured by comparing the uptake of PAH and the growth of the exposed animals versus control groups. Oysters sampled at 7, 14 and 28 days did not exhibit an increase in PAH body burden over control animals provided the guts were first purged of particulates. Even at the high test concentrations (10 mg litre(-1)), no effect of the exposure on shell growth was observed.  相似文献

Cost-effective and environmentally acceptable methods are needed to remediate munitions-contaminated soil. Some perennial grass species are tolerant of soil contaminants and may promote remediation because of their high water use and extensive fibrous root systems. The effects of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and its reduction product, 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene (4ADNT), on germination and early seedling development of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were determined. Tall fescue seeds were germinated in nutrient-free agar containing 0-60 mg TNT litre(-1) or 0-15 mg 4ADNT litre(-1). Germination decreased linearly as TNT concentration increased but was not significantly affected by 4ADNT at these concentrations. Concentrations less than 30 mg TNT litre(-1) or 7.5 mg 4ADNT litre(-1) had little effect on seedling growth and development. Higher TNT or 4ADNT concentrations substantially delayed seedling development, caused abnormal radicle tissue development, and reduced secondary root and shoot growth. Seedling respiration rates decreased linearly with increasing TNT concentration. Experiments indicate that tall fescue may be grown in soils that maintain soil solution concentrations of 30 mg TNT litre(-1) or less.  相似文献

When liming running waters, dosers must compensate for different flow and water qualities and for the downstream inflow from acid tributaries which creates mixing zones. At a certain point in the mixing zone, a constant or fluctuating chemical disequilibrium will appear due to transformation processes. In laboratory assays, over-saturated solutions of aluminium with ongoing active precipitation of aluminium have been found to be especially toxic to fish. Recent experiments in a mixing zone in the limed River Audna, Norway, have confirmed this phenomenon. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) smolts were exposed to acid and limed waters and mixtures of the two waters downstream from the point of connection. In the acid tributary (mean values: pH=4.8, Ca=1.3 mg litre (-1)), Ali 236 microg litre(-1)=), LT5) was 22 and 40 h for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, respectively. In the mixing zone (pH=4.8-6.5, Ca=1.2-3.2 mg litre(-1), Ali=50-240 microg litre(-1)), LT50 was 7 h for both species, masking the normal species difference in tolerance. Osmoregulatory failure and rapid gill lesions occurred in the mixing zone as an effect of the transformation of Al into high molecular weight precipitating species. This is the first documentation of the existence of such highly toxic mixing zones in nature, and the results clearly show that the mixing zone is even more toxic to fish than acid aluminium-rich waters.  相似文献

This paper describes the establishment and design of a scheme to denitrify industrial effluent with concentrations of N greater than 2000 mg litre(-1) to levels within the regulatory limits of the Zimbabwe Natural Resources Act which stipulates an upper limit of 10 mg litre(-1) of nitrate in effluent dumped in important catchment areas. The scheme was set up in 1978 and the data used in the discussion are for the year 1983, five years after the establishment of the scheme. The scheme consists of three impounding reservoirs in which effluent is held for at least 24 h in each case so that it undergoes biological denitrification at each stage. In some cases, the effluent is diverted after the second reservoir and is used to irrigate pastures on which dairy cattle are being grazed. In general, under this scheme, the N content of the effluent is within the regulatory limit by the time it enters the main river system, about 8 km away.  相似文献

The impact of conifer afforestation on stream-water chemistry was investigated in the acidified catchment of Loch Dee, SW Scotland. Long-term trends in stream-water chemistry were evaluated during a period of forest growth from age 6 to 17 years. A significant increase was observed for pH (0.2 units) and a significant decline for aluminium (0.05 mg litre(-1)), sulphate (1.2 mg litre(-1)) and nitrate (0.02 mg litre(-1)) concentrations. The long-term decrease in stream-water acidity was ascribed to the marked reductions in sulphur depositions during the 1970s and early 1980s. There was no evidence that this response had been attenuated by afforestation, the improvements in stream-water chemistry being of a similar magnitude to those recorded in nearby moorland lochs and exceeding that in an adjacent moorland-catchment stream. The lack of a clear forest acidification effect is consistent with deposition-model estimates which show the increased scavenging of occult and dry deposition by the growing forest to be small at this site (相似文献

The sulphite and sulphate concentrations in weathering products of limestone and in wet and total deposition samples were measured by the modified West-Gaeke method and by ion chromatography. The sulphite content in the weathering crust and in the runoff rainwater of two historical buildings in Belgium, was always much lower than the sulphate content. The maximum sulphite to sulphate ratio was 2.5%. The sulphite concentration in wet and total deposition samples was in the low or sub ppm range except during two misty periods when the sulphite concentration was 6.8 and 21 mg litre(-1). In those samples a high sulphate concentration was also found (nl. 57 and 137 mg litre(-1), respectively).  相似文献

This study examines the acute and chronic effects of the insecticide (S)-methoprene on the survival and reproduction of the freshwater cladoceran Moina macrocopa. In laboratory toxicity tests, the 24- and 48-h LC50 values for (S)-methoprene were 0.51 and 0.34 mg litre(-1), respectively. Survival, longevity and fecundity were reduced at 0.05 mg litre(-1) and higher concentrations. At 0.005 and 0.01 mg litre(-1), longevity and fecundity increased slightly as compared to control animals. If environmental concentrations of methoprene do not exceed 0.05 mg litre(-1), as is generally the case, application of this insecticide is unlikely to induce detrimental effects on natural cladoceran populations. The stimulatory effect of very low levels of methoprene on reproductive performance is consistent with the hypothesis of a regulatory role of juvenile hormone-like compounds in crustacean reproduction.  相似文献

Piggery effluent may contribute to the eutrophication of waterways, if it is not treated before disposal, because of high levels of phosphorus. Limes and red muds (a residue from bauxite refining) were used to remove phosphorus from piggery effluent (41 mg litre(-1) total P). Lime-based amendments were more effective than the red muds at removing phosphorus when compared at the same liquid: solid ratios. Based on laboratory data, the cost of treating effluent increased rapidly as the final required phosphorus concentration decreased to less than 4 mg litre(-1). Kiln dust was the cheapest amendment tested down to 2 mg litre(-1). Hydrated lime was able to clarify and flocculate the effluent to 1 mg litre(-1) within 60 min. The re-useability of all limes may be determined by a simple pH test. Red mud could be used to remove phosphorus when its pH was lowered to 6.0-6.5 and it is used at liquid:solid ratios <20:1.  相似文献

There is some concern that the antiozonant ethylenediurea (EDU), used for crop loss assessment due to ambient ozone (O3) may per se affect plant growth and yield. In view of this, and to provide knowledge for later field experiments, dose-response studies with EDU and O3 were carried out in greenhouses in winter and spring 1989, using radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cv. 'Cherry Belle' and 'Red Prince', grown in two different substrates. EDU was applied as a single or repeated soil drench in concentrations ranging from 300 to 800 mg litre(-1) in the first, and from 100 to 400 mg litre(-1) in the second trial. In the second experiment, plants were exposed to a chronic level of O3, mimicking ambient patterns, or to filtered air after the EDU-treatment. When applied in concentrations above 300 mg litre(-1), EDU reduced growth, thereby affecting the development of the thickened hypocotyl far more than the shoot growth that was partially stimulated by lower doses of EDU. Phytotoxic symptoms on the leaves, attributable to EDU, were observed at concentrations above 200 mg litre(-1), but complete protection from visible O3-injury was provided by a single application of EDU at a concentration as low as 100 mg litre(-1). Significant interactions on growth characters measured between O3-exposure and EDU application were observed only in one of the substrates. While these results demonstrate the need for careful dose-response studies prior to field assessments, they also provide evidence of a dosage that is effective in protecting radish from O3 damage without interfering with plant growth itself.  相似文献
