Garden black ants,Lasius niger L., in a laboratory colony, attacked three species of live ladybirds found near their nest, killing the smaller two species. A second colony was offered artificial diets containing crushed ladybirds of two species, and the ants' choice of feeding site noted. Both the diets were aversive compared to control, but that containing 7spot,Coccinella septempunctata L., was more aversive than the diet containing 2spot,Adalia bipunctata L. The implications of this lesser protection for 2spots in terms of the chemical defence of the species are discussed. 相似文献

Indirect evidence suggests that Stenoteuthis oualaniensis is a multiple spawner, a reproductive strategy not reported previously for squid. After spawning once, S. oualaniensis apparently continues to feed, grow, and mature additional oocytes before spawning again. Squid were caught by jigging at night in waters around the main Hawaiian Islands during four cruises from 1981 to 1987. All females from 200 mm mantle length (ML) to at least 318 mm ML were sexually mature, indicating that considerable growth takes place after reaching sexual maturity. Size-frequency analyses of ovarian oocytes revealed continuous egg production throughout adult life. Mature ova are stored in the oviducts, but oviduct fullness is unrelated to body size, indicating repeat spawning. 相似文献

Biomarkers have a number of different uses in risk assessment, including (1) a variety of applications as dosimeters, (2) as an aid in quantifying inter-individual variability in susceptibility; and (3) as intermediate effect parameters that can help the analyst predict outcomes that are difficult to measure directly. This paper focuses primarily on applications of the first and second types, which are most frequently found in assessing risks from inorganic compounds. 相似文献

Summary Polyterritorial polygyny in passerine birds, i.e., when already-paired males attract females in secondary territories, has been explained by male deception. Secondary females are assumed to make a poor choice, because they lack information about males' pairing status. To date, the deception hypothesis has focused mainly on the hole-nesting pied flycatcher. In this study of polyterritorial wood warblers, an open-nesting species, secondary females did not differ in number of fledged young compared with females of monogamous males, and they fledged even more young than primary females. Nest predation influenced the allocation of paternal care. Almost half of the secondary females had exclusive male assistance because nests of primary females were preyed upon. 相似文献

Varied concentrations of PbCl2 and CdCl2 in the germinating media reduced the total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents in primary leaves of Amaranthus lividus seedlings (168 h old). When chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents were measured separately, greater loss of chl b than chl a under the identical conditions of heavy metal treatment was observed In addition, the loss of total chlorophyll was more than carotenoids under the same magnitude of heavy metal treatment. The effect of heavy metal treatment at germination stage was further studied on chlorophyll accumulation in primary leaves in relation to the activities of 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) and chlorophyllase. The activities of ALAD gradually diminished in response to both the heavy metals in a concentration-guided manner, while the activities of chlorophyllase did not exhibit any significant change. 相似文献

Anchovy feeding activity (based on samples collected around the South African coast between 1986 and 1988) seems to peak twice daily, with the major peak between 17:00 and 19:00 hrs. Mean daily consumption in the field was estimated at 3.45% of body wt d-1. Since the various food types available to anchovy differ in their caloric values, this figure might be expected to vary according to the type of diet available to the fish. To obtain a diet energetically equivalent to that measured in the field anchovy feeding exclusively on phytoplankton would need to consume the equivalent of 5.8% of their body wt d-1 and those feeding on zooplankton 3.5 to 4.5% of the body wt, while fish feeding on their own eggs would require only 2.5% of their body wt daily. Feeding on eggs at peak spawning on the spawning grounds —where there is limited alternative food (i.e., zooplankton) available — seems adequate to support reproduction. In selection at the population level, cannibalistic fish benefit from homeostatic self-regulation. 相似文献

From May 1977 to February 1979, the use of sponges and ascidians by Cryptodromia hilgendorfi was studied in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. The aim was to investigate patterns of seasonal use, cap making behaviour, cap turnover, the effect of intraspecific interactions on cap life and the effect of movement of crabs between hosts on background matching. C. hilgendorfi uses 12 (of 16 available) species of sponge and 3 species of ascidians to construct caps, which are carried by the crabs using their last two pairs of legs. Cap area increases non-linearly with crab size, and caps are normally two to three times as large as the crabs. Cap making behaviour is described. It occurs during intermoult periods, with females making most of their caps at night. Caps decrease in size with time, but conceal the crabs which commonly occupy exposed sites on sponges. Cap life is independent of crab size, differs between different cap species and is influenced by the presence of other crabs who can dislodge caps through aggressive behaviour. Caps are made from the sponge Suberites carnosus more often than from other available sponges. S. carnosus caps also decay less rapidly than caps made from other sponges. Use of sponge and ascidian species varies seasonally, with Halichondria sp. and S. carnosus being used in all months. C. hilgendorfi exhibits a preference for certain sponges. The majority of crabs carried caps which matched their host sponge or ascidian, but mis-matches varied seasonally with a winter peak following the breeding season. Young C. hilgendorfi settle only on S. carnosus sponges and disperse from this host to other species in the environment. Males and females differ in their rate of discovery of new hosts. Males, despite their greater mobility, find new hosts slower than females. It is hypothesized that males occupy “home ranges” which females do not. Crabs frequently move between sponges, mostly at night. Sponges and ascidian species grow in intimate association with each other, and sponge crabs act a selective asexual propagation mechanism. Depending upon the nature of the interactions between sponge and ascidian species (co-operative or competitive) and whether competitive hierarchies or networks are involved, the sponge crabs may have either stabilizing or destabilizing effects on the sponge community. 相似文献

In freshwater ecosystems, rotifers and cladocerans are ideal prey for fish larvae whereas copepods, due to their purported low growth rate and predatory tendency, are not. We recently isolated the parthenogenetic Elaphoidella grandidieri (Gueme et Richard, 1893) a benthic freshwater harpacticoid, from a fish farm in the State of Morelos, central Mexico and tested its potential as a live prey organism for larval vertebrates. Population growth and life table demography experiments were conducted, in 100 ml recipients with 50 ml of test medium on a diet of Scenedesmus acutus at a density of 1.0 X 10(6) cell ml(-1); the former on live algae alone while the latter on live algae as well as detritus. We also conducted experiments to document the prey preference for this copepod by the larval Ameca splendens (Pisces: Goodeidae) and Ambystoma mexicanum (Amphibia: Ambystomatidae), fed the rotifer Plationus patulus, the ostracod Heterocypris incongruens, and the cladocerans Moina macrocopa and Daphnia pulex. Elaphoidella grandidieri is relatively easy to maintain under laboratory conditions, reaching densities (copepodites and adults) of more than 10,000 l(-1). The generation time ranged between 30-45 days, depending on the diet. The net reproductive rate was as high as 60 nauplii female(-1) day (1). Population growth rates ranged between 0.03 and 0.11 d(-1), live algae being the superior diet compared to detritus. Both predators showed no preference for E. grandidieri, but in the absence of alternate prey they consumed 80% of the harpacticoids offered. The data have been discussed in relation to the potential of E. grandidierias live food for aquaculture. 相似文献

Role of surface chemical signals in egg cannibalism and intraguild predation in ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary. The eggs of some ladybirds are known to be toxic to intraguild ladybird predators. However, this defence is of little value
if the eggs are killed before their toxicity becomes apparent. The results presented in this paper indicate that chemicals
on the surface of the eggs of two species of ladybirds signal the relative risk of cannibalism and intraguild predation. In
Adalia bipunctata and Coccinella septempunctata, 87% of the chemicals are alkanes. Each species of ladybird is less reluctant to eat their own eggs than those of the other
species. This asymmetry is to be expected because there is a greater risk to ladybirds from intraguild predation than cannibalism.
Similar alkanes to those on the surface of the eggs of A. bipunctata are present in tracks left by larvae and on the elytra of the adults of this species. Those in the larval tracks deter females
from ovipositing in patches of prey already being attacked by their larvae and those on the elytra are used in mate recognition.
That different context dependent messages could be signalled by similar chemicals is an example of semiochemical parsimony.

To better understand the attractiveness of host tree, Chinese white pines (Pinus armandi Fr.) to Chinese white pine beetle (Dendroctonus armandi Tsai and Li), the antennal responses of D. armandi to the host volatile, as well as the pure enantiomers and racemates of some monoterpenes, were examined using an electroantennogram
(EAG). EAG responses of male and female D. armandi to blended volatiles extracted from the host and some synthetic terpenes (α-phellandrene, (−)-β-pinene, (+)-α-pinene, (−)-α-pinene,
(−)-camphene, β-myrcene, (S)-(−)-limonene, (+)-camphene and (R)-(+)-limonene) showed significant variation due to different compound concentrations and sex of the beetles. EAG responses
to extracted blended volatiles were significantly greater in females than in males, but the EAG response was not always proportional
to the volatile concentration. At lower concentrations, females responded strongly to α-phellandrene and males to (−)-β-pinene,
while at higher concentrations, females responded most strongly to α-phellandrene and males to (+)-α-pinene. Females were
significantly responsive to (−)-α-pinene, α-phellandrene and (−)-camphene, while males were more responsive to (S)-(−)-limonene, (+)-α-pinene and (R)-(+)-limonene. The EAG responses of the female D. armandi to the volatile oil were significantly higher than that of the males, and the infested pine volatiles could evoke higher
EAG response. Most of the test compounds elicited similar responses, which suggested that several of the compounds may be
used in combination by D. armandi in habitat and/or host community location at the Qinling forest ecosystem. 相似文献

Competitive countermarking occurs when animals compete to ensure that their scent marks are in the top-most position and more recently deposited than those of rivals. Because it takes a great deal of time and energy, and perhaps dominant or territorial status, to patrol the area and rapidly countermark rivals' marks, assessors may use the presence of countermarks as a reliable cue of the signaler's competitive ability. Selection on assessors, therefore, should favor the evolution of mechanisms to determine which scent is the countermark. Sexual selection theory predicts that females select high-quality males with whom to mate; therefore, females should mate preferentially with countermarking males. We examined the role of countermarking in intra-male competition and female mate choice in the pygmy loris. In experiment 1, we found that males deposit significantly more urine when countermarking other males' urine, but countermark female urine no more than control stimuli. In experiment 2, we exposed females to the urine of two males for several weeks. One male always deposited his urine first, whereas the second male always deposited his urine later and on top of the first male's urine. When reaching peak estrus, females were given a simultaneous choice test between the two males, and showed a significant preference for the countermarking male with regard to: (1) her location and orientation to the male, (2) her chemosensory interest in the male and his cage, and (3) her affiliative socio-sexual behaviors. These results are consistent with predictions from the competitive countermarking hypothesis, and demonstrate that chemosignals play a profound role in governing female reproductive behavior in the species. 相似文献

Summary The thick-legged first instar soldiers of the gall-forming aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae Pass. are able to protect the aphids in the gall from being eaten by a range of insect predators. In artificial galls, the soldier aphids were able to kill first instar ladybirds Adalia bipunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), early third instar hoverfly larvae Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) corollae (Fab.) (Diptera: Syrphidae), and first-third instar Anthocoris nemoralis (Fab.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Almost all the aphids that attacked the predators were themselves killed. The soldiers were also able to kill predators introduced into natural galls. Experiments were devised in which individuals of Anthocoris minki, which is the most important insect predator of the gall generations of Pemphigus at the study site, were free to enter and leave the gall: the soldiers were effective both in preventing the predator's access to the gall and in killing those predators that did manage to get in. In galls with experimentally manipulated numbers of soldiers and non-soldiers, it was clearly shown that it is the soldiers alone that kill the predators (Anthocoris minki and 1st instar Adalia bipunctata) (see Table 3). Even though many soldiers may die during these encounters, the selective advantage of killing the predators is high, since observations show that individual A. minki can pass through more than one instar inside a gall and kill all the aphids therein. The aphids were not observed to attack conspecific aphids from other galls or the cohabiting aphid Chaitophorus leucomelas Koch. The primary role of the soldier caste is therefore the defence of the aphid colony against predators. 相似文献

Neighbour–stranger discrimination occurs when individuals respond with more aggression to strangers than to territorial neighbours—a
phenomenon termed the “dear enemy phenomenon” (DEP). We investigated the DEP with male and female root voles (Microtus oeconomus Pallas 1776) using field dyadic arena tests conducted in enclosures where we could test for the effects of familiarity (familiar
versus stranger), ownership (resident versus intruder status) and resource-holding potential (body mass) on territorial behaviours.
The results showed that males put more effort into territorial defence than females, and males could discriminate between
neighbours and strangers. In males, aggressiveness was influenced by a significant two-way interaction between treatment and
ownership. Male residents were more aggressive towards stranger intruders than towards neighbour intruders, while male intruders
were less aggressive towards stranger residents than towards neighbour residents. In females, neither treatment nor ownership
status had a significant effect on aggressiveness. Familiar males performed more social behaviours but less non-social behaviours
than stranger males. Furthermore, there was a clear dominance hierarchy between residents and intruders in stranger dyads,
with the male territory holders dominating the intruder in pairwise interactions. To our knowledge, these results demonstrate
for the first time DEP in a small mammal with a known pedigree and present the first evidence for “prior resident advantage”
in voles. We argue that both ownership status and familiarity status affect how much an individual invests in territory defence.
The benefits of neighbour–stranger discrimination for male root voles and the absence of neighbour–stranger discrimination
in female root voles are discussed. 相似文献

A two-dimensional individual-based model coupled with fish bioenergetics was developed to simulate migration and growth of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) in the western North Pacific. In the model, fish movement is controlled by feeding and spawning migrations with passive transport by simulated ocean current. Feeding migration was assumed to be governed by search for local optimal habitats, which is estimated by the spatial distribution of net growth rate of a sardine bioenergetics model. The forage density is one of the most important factors which determines the geographical distributions of Japanese sardine during their feeding migrations. Spawning migration was modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN) with an input layer composed of five neurons that receive environmental information (surface temperature, temperature change experienced, current speed, day length and distance from land). Once the weight of the ANN was determined, the fish movement was solved by combining with the feeding migration model. To obtain the weights of the ANN, three experiments were conducted in which (1) the ANN was trained with back propagation (BP) method with optimum training data, (2) genetic algorithm (GA) was used to adjust the weights and (3) the weights of the ANN were decided by the GA with BP, respectively. BP is a supervised learning technique for training ANNs. GA is a search technique used in computing to find approximate solutions, such as optimization of parameters. Condition factor of sardine in the model is used as a factor of optimization in the GA works. The methods using only BP or GA did not work to search the appropriate weights in the ANN for spawning migration. In the third method, which is a combined approach of GA with BP, the model reproduced the most realistic spawning migration of Japanese sardine. The changes in temperature and day length are important factors for the orientation cues of Japanese sardine according to the sensitivity analysis of the weights of the ANN. 相似文献

In the eastern United States, land-use and climate change have likely contributed to declines in the abundance of Neotropical migrant birds that occupy forest interiors, but the mechanisms are not well understood. We conducted a nest-predation experiment in southern Appalachian Mountain forests (North Carolina, U.S.A.) during the 2009 and 2010 breeding seasons to determine the effects of exurban development and temperature on predator presence and the average number of days until eggs in an artificial nest were disturbed by predators. We baited artificial nests with quail (Excalfactoria chinensi) eggs and monitored them for 18 days. We used clay eggs, track plates, and motion-triggered cameras to detect and identify nest predators. The average number of days a nest was undisturbed decreased as mean temperature increased and, to a lesser extent, as the density of buildings increased. Nests on the ground were more often depredated than those in trees, likely due to increased predation by opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and other carnivores. Raccoons (Procyon lotor), opossums, corvids (Corvus brachyrhynchos and Cyanocitta cristata), chipmunks (Tamias striatus), black bears (Ursus americanus), and domestic cats (Felis catus) were the most commonly detected predators. Presence of these predators did not vary as a function of mean temperature. Domestic cats and corvids were detected more frequently in plots with high rather than low densities of buildings. Forest-interior specialists and Neotropical migrants often nest in cool, high-elevation areas with low housing density. These bird species, especially those that nest on the ground, may be most vulnerable to increased nest predation if temperature and exurban development increase at higher elevations as anticipated. 相似文献

Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed) is an aggressively invasive herbaceous perennial that causes substantial economic and environmental damage in the United Kingdom (UK). As such, it is of considerable concern to councils, environmental groups, private landowners and property developers. We construct a 3D correlated random walk model of the development of the subterranean rhizome network for a single stand of F. japonica. The formulation of this model uses detailed knowledge of the morphology and physiology of the plant, both of which differ in the UK to that of its native habitat due to factors including a lack of predation and competition, longer growth seasons and favourable environmental conditions in the UK. Field data obtained as a part of this study are discussed and used in the model for parameterisation and validation. The simulation captures the field data well and predicts, for example, quadratic growth in time for the stand area. Furthermore, the role of a selection of parameters on long-term stand development are discussed, highlighting some key factors affecting vegetative spread rates. 相似文献

Summary Nest defence responses of experimentally naive and revisited willow tits (Parus montanus) towards a predator model were studied near Oulu, northern Finland, in 1988–1989. Intensity was measured with three variables in 228 trials at 90 nests. Two hypotheses explaining the temporal changes in the nest defence behavior were examined. In naive birds the nest defence intensity was positively correlated with the brood age, supporting the parental investment hypothesis. The number of previous trials did not cause additional variation in nest defence behavior in comparison between naive and revisited birds. Similarly, experiences in a previous breeding attempt did not affect the nest defence behavior during the course of the subsequent brood. Thus, the temporal increase in multiply visited nests was not due to the birds becoming familiar with the nest threat, i.e., no support was found for the so-called positive reinforcement hypothesis. We think that methodological problems in avian nest defence studies can hide the adaptive significance of the behavior, not explain it.
