Inbreeding has negative effects on individual and population performances. Therefore, enhancement of offspring genetic diversity is believed to play a major role in shaping mating systems. However, no study has clearly separated the direct effect of having multiple partners from the indirect effect of having more outbred offspring on the resulting reproductive success of individuals in the wild. In this study, we report significant associations between both multiple mating and within-individual genetic diversity of offspring, and an increased reproductive success of wild female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Specifically, we found that females with a higher number of mates also have more outbred offspring (within-individuals), and that both of these characteristics increased their reproductive success expressed in terms of offspring surviving when combining all freshwater juvenile stages. Our findings also indicate that determinants of fitness are different among sexes as within-individual offspring genetic diversity was not a strong predictor of male reproductive success, while the number of mates was important. We also show that females mated with more outbred males than on average, which potentially increased their chances of producing outbred offspring. These results therefore suggest that there could be more important indirect genetic benefits of multiple mating for females than for males.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献

Stocking Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. in the Meuse river system is unsuccessful, since hardly any adults return upstream. To investigate problems during seaward migration, individual salmon smolts were tracked in the Dutch part of the river Meuse, using the Nedap Trail® system. The study included a comparison for two seasons, one with high (2010) and one with low (2011) discharge conditions. Cultivated smolts (Loire-Allier strain, n = 100 per year) were implanted with telemetry tags and released in the tributary Roer in March, at the beginning of the natural smolt run. The study area was split into four river sections each characterized by different conditions: tributary Roer, main river Meuse extensively dammed, main river Meuse free flowing and the estuary. Mortalities differed considerably between sections. In the free flowing river Meuse the mortalities were relatively low (10 and 25 %). Mortalities were high in the tributary (44 and 45 %), the dammed river (46 and 49 %) and in the estuary (89 and 90 %). Only 2 and 3 % of the smolts escaped into the North Sea. Results are discussed in relation to environmental factors light and discharge and the presence of man-made obstacles: weirs, hydropower plants and a sea lock. A lack of current and delays at man-made obstacles result in disorientation of fish, a higher risk of predation and disturbance of the smolt run timing. Mortality causes must decrease for sustaining a salmon population in the Meuse.  相似文献

Baltic salmons were caught from two Latvian rivers during the spawning seasons of 2010 and 2011 for the determination of seventeen 2,3,7,8-chlorine-substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A partially automated clean-up procedure was used for sample preparation, followed by capillary gas chromatography hyphenated to high-resolution mass spectrometry. The concentrations of PCDD/F&;PCB-TEQ ranged from 6.6 to 18.2?ng?kg?1 fresh weight and this confirms the previous reports of relatively high concentrations of PCDD/Fs, and especially of dioxin-like PCBs in Baltic wild salmon, in most samples exceeding maximum recommended levels (MRLs) in toxicity equivalency quotients (PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ) of the World Health Organization (WHO 1998) according to EC COMMISSION REGULATION No 1881/2006. The results suggest that high consumption of Baltic wild salmon could entail the risk of exceeding the TDI for adults and teenagers. Extra care must be taken when Baltic wild salmon is included in childrens's diet to avoid exceedance of the recommended TDI of 4?pg?kg?1 body weight for this group.  相似文献

The uptake and depuration of the water-sol‐uble fraction (WSF) of hydrocarbons of crude petroleum by Atlantic salmon (Salmosalar) has previously been examined in terms of whole muscle. The hypothesis that the tainting WSF in the muscle was retained primarily by adipocytes has been investigated by the isolation of adipocytes and the subsequent analysis for hydrocarbons in adipocytes. After 96 h exposure of market-sized Atlantic salmon to 0.2 ppm WSF, adipocytes isolated from the belly flap region of the muscle tissue accumulated 14.3 times more WSF (59.4 ppm) than the dorsal white muscle (4.2 ppm), while 54% of the tainting WSF in the dorsal white muscle was found to be stored in associated adipocytes. When returned to clean seawater, WSF accumulated in the dorsal white muscle was released much faster than that in the adipocytes. These results indicated that the loose association of WSF with the nonlipid portion of white muscle, mainly muscle cells and intercellular fluid, is responsible for the rapid discharge of WSF from the dorsal muscle tissue in the early stages of depuration. After 4 d of depuration, the adipocytes became the principal storage site of residual WSF in white muscle and the depuration of WSF from muscle tissue then reflected the release of WSF from adipocytes in the muscle tissue. After 20 d of depuration, 10.7 ppm of tainting WSF in the form of high molecular weight aromatic hydrocarbons (mainly C4-benzenes, naphthalene and alkylated naphthalenes) were still present in adipocytes, while in the dorsal white muscle only a trace of total WSF was detected. Increases in the number of aromatic rings and the alkylations on the rings enhanced the accumulation and retention of individual hydrocarbons in both adipocytes and white muscle. From these studies we conclude that it is the adipocytes in the muscle tissue which control the actual accumulation and release of hydrocarbons in the whole muscle tissue of Atlantic salmon. Patterns of space use provide key insights into how animals exploit local resources and are linked to both the fitness and distribution of individuals. We studied territory size, mobility, and foraging behavior of young-of-the-year Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in relation to several key environmental factors in Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick, Canada. The 50 study fish were all multiple central-place foragers (i.e., alternated among several sit-and-wait foraging stations) and showed great variability in territory size and the total distance traveled within the territories. Territory size increased with the mean distance traveled between consecutive foraging stations, the number of stations visited, and the mean foraging radius. Fish also varied greatly in how much of the total travel distance was associated with foraging at a station (14.8–91.8%) versus switching among stations (4.6–84.3%). As predicted, fish in slow-flowing waters, where drifting prey were scarce, used larger multiple central-place territories than individuals in faster, more productive waters. Interestingly, however, the most mobile fish did not inhabit slow-running waters as predicted but were found at intermediate (optimal) water current velocities. Hence, our study suggests that among some multiple central-place foragers, increased mobility may not only serve to increase prey encounter rate but may reflect an attempt to patrol territories in favorable habitats. Further studies are needed to determine the generality and the ultimate benefits of multiple central-place space use among stream-dwelling fish and other animals.  相似文献

Understanding how plant life history affects species vulnerability to anthropogenic disturbances and environmental change is a major ecological challenge. We examined how vegetation type, growth form, and geographic range size relate to extinction risk throughout the Brazilian Atlantic Forest domain. We used a database containing species‐level information of 6,929 angiosperms within 112 families and a molecular‐based working phylogeny. We used decision trees, standard regression, and phylogenetic regression to explore the relationships between species attributes and extinction risk. We found a significant phylogenetic signal in extinction risk. Vegetation type, growth form, and geographic range size were related to species extinction risk, but the effect of growth form was not evident after phylogeny was controlled for. Species restricted to either rocky outcrops or scrub vegetation on sandy coastal plains exhibited the highest extinction risk among vegetation types, a finding that supports the hypothesis that species adapted to resource‐limited environments are more vulnerable to extinction. Among growth forms, epiphytes were associated with the highest extinction risk in non‐phylogenetic regression models, followed by trees, whereas shrubs and climbers were associated with lower extinction risk. However, the higher extinction risk of epiphytes was not significant after correcting for phylogenetic relatedness. Our findings provide new indicators of extinction risk and insights into the mechanisms governing plant vulnerability to extinction in a highly diverse flora where human disturbances are both frequent and widespread. Summary This paper documents differences in seasonal time of river ascent and descent, and instream behavior of adult wild and sea-ranched Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of the Norwegian River Imsa stock during the period 1981–1989. Wild fish use River Imsa as a nursery, and at an age of 2 years most of them migrate to the sea as smolts. The sea ranched fish are hatchery reared offspring of the River Imsa stock and are released as smolts at the mouth of the river. They are thus deprived of juvenile river life and a downstream smolt migration. Wild and sea ranched salmon feed for 1 or more years in the Norwegian Sea before homing as spawners. Both groups returned simultaneously to coastal Norway, but sea ranched fish ascended the river later and descended sooner after spawning than wild fish. All wild females and almost all wild males (96.2%) spawned in the river, whereas 13.5% and 36.7%, respectively, of the mature sea-ranched females and males left the river unspawned. The annual number, but not the proportion, of unspawned fish increased with increasing density of adult salmon in the river. Unspawned females were medium sized and small (45–70 cm); unspawned males were medium sized and large (50–90 cm). Independent of the density of spawners in the river, sea ranched fish moved up- and downstream the river more often than wild fish. More than 20% of the sea-ranched salmon and less than 1% of the wild salmon passed a trap 100 m above the river outlet more than once in each direction during the same spawning reason. Moreover, sea-ranched salmon were about twice as often seriously injured during spawning as wild fish. Lack of juvenile experience from the river may be the main reason for the behavioral differences between sea-ranched and wild fish. Offprint requests to: B. Jonsson  相似文献

Prior residency advantages have been explained by an asymmetry between the ‘owner’ and the ‘intruder’ in fighting ability (resource-holding potential) or motivation (value asymmetry (VA)). Here, we tested for the extent of prior residence effects in individually tagged Atlantic salmon juveniles being released in two bouts (4 days apart) during spring along a natural stream, and recaptured 3 months later. A prior residency advantage was detected both in terms of body growth, energy density and male gonad size. As we controlled for effects of initial body size, which correlates with dominance, these findings are in accordance with the VA hypothesis. The growth advantage of first arrivals also increased with local shelter abundance in the stream, which can be expected if a higher resource value of the habitat results in a higher defence motivation. We also found a prior residence effect on spatial distribution, with the second arrivals within each release site being recaptured further downstream. No effect on apparent survival rates was found. The observed reduced growth and energy density may have fitness consequences for the second arrivals, both in terms of lower winter survival rates and later age at maturity. For mature male parr, both decreased body and gonad growth may give an additional disadvantage through reduced fertilization rates during breeding. These costs may help to explain the tendency for stationary behaviour of stream salmonids, as the potential benefits of moving into less crowded areas would be reduced by the risk of becoming an intruder. Prior residence effects may therefore have influenced the evolution of movement behaviour in these organisms.  相似文献

Stenobrachius leucopsarus, the most abundant species of myctophid fishes off Oregon, USA, has a bimodal distribution at night, with a peak of abundance in the upper 100 m composed of diel vertical migrants, and another peak at 300 to 500 m composed of fish that did not migrate the night they were caught. We compared the feeding habits of these two groups of fish in an attempt to learn if deep fish migrated to surface waters. Low similarity of diets, differences in the rank order of common prey, and similar states of stomach fullness and digestion of prey suggest that fish captured in deep water at night probably did not feed exclusively in shallow water on previous nights. They probably fed in deep water. The similarity in food habits between deep and shallow fish is most readily explained by daytime feeding by fish in deep water and by broad vertical distributions of prey.  相似文献

Summary I investigated the effect of restricted food and social dominance on nocturnal migratory activity (Zugunruhe) in dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) in late fall and winter. Highly restricted food tended to increase Zugunruhe in both dominant and subordinate members of pairs, however, subordinates showed significantly more migratory activity than dominants or solitary controls. Further, subordinate birds continued Zugunruhe after dominants and solitary controls had ceased this activity for the remainder of the winter. From mid-December through mid-January when birds had access to food ad lib, migratory activity decreased significantly. These results indicate that toward the end of fall migration, migratory behavior is subject to ecological and social conditions that influence the probability of overwinter survival. Presumably, such a system enables these birds to minimize the distance of migration; at the same time, they are able to track a relatively unpredictable, temperate, winter environment by prolonging migration if necessary.  相似文献

The striking ability of territory owners to repel intruders has generated a number of theoretical explanations as well as experimental studies in many animal species. However, effects of individual habitat preferences on territorial defence have rarely been studied. From the territory value hypothesis, we predicted that owners of preferred habitats should invest more resources in defence than owners of non-preferred habitats. We tested this prediction with young territorial brown trout in a two-stage experiment. First, trout were allowed to choose individually between gravel and a uniform bright substrate. As expected, they showed a significant (79%) preference for gravel. However, there was considerable variation between individuals in substrate preference, with a few fish preferring the bright substrate. Half of the tested fish were then transferred to a gravel substrate and the rest to a bright substrate, manipulating habitat type in relation to preference. Territory owners were then staged against size-matched intruders whereupon contest aggression was observed and the winner of each contest determined. Overall, owners won most of the contests. Satisfied owners won 86% and owners of less preferred territories, 74% of the contests. Furthermore, more satisfied owners attacked sooner and were more aggressive relative to the intruders. We conclude that brown trout show individual variation in habitat preference, which appears to be linked with their investment in territorial defence. These results suggest that understanding and modelling of animal contests could benefit from considering how territorial defence is influenced by individual habitat preference and specialisation. Ultrasonic, depth-sensitive transmitters were used to track the horizontal and vertical movements, for up to 48 h, of 11 adult (136 to 340 kg estimated body mass) North Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus Linnaeus). Fish were tracked in October 1995, September and October 1996, and August and September 1997 in the Gulf of Maine, northwestern Atlantic. The objective was to document the behavior of these fish and their schools in order to provide the spatial, temporal, and environmental information required for direct (i.e. fishery-independent) assessment of adult bluefin tuna abundance using aerial surveys. Transmitters were attached to free-swimming fish using a harpoon attachment technique, and all fish remained within the Gulf of Maine while being followed. Most of the bluefin tuna tagged on Stellwagen Bank or in Cape Cod Bay (and followed for at least 30 h) held a predominately easterly course with net horizontal displacements of up to 76 km d−1. Mean (±SD) swimming depth for all fish was 14 ± 4.7 m and maximum depth for individuals ranged from 22 to 215 m. All but one fish made their deepest excursions, often single descents, at dawn and dusk. In general, adult bluefin tuna spent <8% of their time at the surface (0 to 1 m), <19% in the top 4 m, but >90% in the uppermost 30 m. Mean (±SD) speed over ground was 5.9 km h−1, but for brief periods surpassed 20 to 31 km h−1. Sea surface temperatures during tracking were 11.5 to 22.0 °C, and minimum temperatures encountered by the fish ranged from 6.0 to 9.0 °C. Tagged bluefin tuna and their schools frequented ocean fronts marked by mixed vertebrate feeding assemblages, which included sea birds, baleen whales, basking sharks, and other bluefin schools. Recent studies have shown that large fuel loads in small birds impair flying ability. This is the first study to show how migratory fuel load affects flying ability, such as velocity and height gained at take-off in a predator escape situation, in a medium-distance migrant, and whether they adjust their take-off according to predator attack angle. First-year robins (Erithacus rubecula) were subjected to simulated attacks from a model merlin (Falco columbarius), and take-off velocity and angle were analysed. Robins with a wing load of 0.19 g cm−2 took off at a 39% lower angle than robins with a wing load of 0.13 g cm−2, while velocity remained unaffected. The robins did not adjust their angle of ascent in accordance with the predator's angle of attack. Since many predators rely on surprise attacks, a difference in flight ability due to varying fuel loads found in migrating robins can be important for birds' chances of survival when actually attacked. The circadian rhythm of swimming activity and the role of the daily illumination cycle in the synchronization of this rhythm were studied in individual juvenile pink salmon. Sixty eight percent of all fish examined (n=38) were day-active when exposed to a 12 h L:12 h D cycle; the remaining fish were nocturnally active. One half of the fish tested under laboratory conditions of continuous, constant light intensity (LL) and constant temperature showed unambiguously endogenous activity rhythms with circadian periods for up to 10 d. The remaining fish were arrhythmic. Mean period length of the free-running activity rhythms for diurnal fish in LL shortened with constant light intensity increasing from 6 to 600 lx, as predicted by the circadian rule. In contrast, mean free-running period for nocturnal fish did not vary significantly with similarly increasing constant light intensity. Mean swimming speed (activity level) of both diurnal and nocturnal fish increased significantly with increasing light intensity. This is suggestive of a positive photokinetic response. When subjected to a phase-delayed LD cycle, the fish resynchronized their daily rhythms of activity with this new LD cycle after only one transient cycle in most instances. Hence, the timing of the daily activity rhythms appeared to occur through the direct masking action of the illumination cycle on activity, rather than through entrainment of an endogenous circadian system.  相似文献

Naturally spawned and fertilized eggs of Atlantic halibut,Hippoglossus hippoglossus L., were analysed for protein, free amino acids (FAA), ammonium ions and energy content. The chemical composition was found to be size-dependent but varied little during egg development. Ammonium ions did, however, accumulate during the late embryonic stage, and the trend in FAA content was downward during the same period. Rates of O2 uptake and NH3 excretion followed exponential patterns. A total of 1µmol O2 was consumed and 120 nmol NH3 excreted between the time intervals of fertilization and 1 d post hatch. Derived O:N ratios indicated that the dominant portion of the energy metabolism was lipid- or carbohydrate-based during the mid-development period but switched to FAA as hatch was approached.Correspondence should be addressed to: Zoological Laboratory, University of Bergen, Allégt. 41, N-5007 Bergen, Norway  相似文献

Herring (Clupea harengus L.) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) fed frozen-thawed zooplankton for 7 days assimilated more than 90% of the dry matter in the zooplankton consumed. Less than 5% of the total lipid ingested, largely wax esters, was excreted in the faeces. Faecal lipids from both the herring and the trout, especially the latter, were rich in wax esters and free fatty alcohols. Faecal fatty alcohols were enriched in 22:1 and deficient in 16:0 and 16:1 alcohols compared to zooplankton fatty alcohols. The growth of rainbow trout fed frozen-thawed zooplankton over 3 months was about one-half of that of trout fed commercial pellets. The fish fed on zooplankton appeared normal and were more pigmented than the fish fed on commercial pellets.  相似文献

In a previous paper, we reported that juvenile barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) trapped during the autumn migratory season and tested in modified Emlen funnels under overcast conditions can use magnetic information for compass orientation, although they did not orient toward the expected migratory direction. To further investigate this behaviour, in the present paper, we report the results of two series of displacement experiments performed on juvenile barn swallows belonging to two different roost sites [Massaciuccoli Lake (ML) and Terzo Cavone (TC)] and tested using the same protocol as that previously adopted. On the whole, the outcome of the ML and TC experiments was quite different with respect to (a) the degree of bird activity within the funnel (substantially lower for TC) and (b) the effect of the experimental displacement on the directional preferences of the tested subjects (not detectable in TC, while evident in ML swallows). Taken together, these results suggest that migrating swallows could react differently to the experimental tests depending on the roost site where they were caught. Indeed, TC swallows, trapped in southern Italy, close to the seacoast, and characterized by fairly large amounts of fat stores, mainly broke off their migratory activity or reoriented their directional preferences toward inland sites, possibly in search of more profitable habitats. On the other hand, ML swallows, trapped about 660 km to the north and characterized by lower amounts of fat stores, apparently tried to compensate for the experimental displacement.

Previous studies have found strong evidences for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) egg retention in fjords, which are caused by the combination of vertical salinity structure, estuarine circulation, and egg specific gravity, supporting small-scaled geographical differentiations of local populations. Here, we assess the variability in egg specific gravity for selected local populations of this species, that is, two fjord-spawning populations and one coastal-spawning population from Northern Norway (66–71°N/10–25°E). Eggs were naturally spawned by raised broodstocks (March to April 2009), and egg specific gravity was measured by a density-gradient column. The phenotype of egg specific gravity was similar among the three local populations. However, the associated variability was greater at the individual level than at the population level. The noted gradual decrease in specific gravity from gastrulation to hatching with an increase just before hatching could be a generic pattern in pelagic marine fish eggs. This study provides needed input to adequately understand and model fish egg dispersal.  相似文献

Summary During their first 1–2 years of life, juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are stream-dwelling, and feed upon drifting invertebrates. They move upstream from a holding position to intercept individual prey items; the distance moved (attack distance) is an increasing, but decelerating, function of prey size. Since the fish are presumably more visible to predators during such feeding excursions, prey size and risk are associated variables. The effect on attack distance of the presentation of a model predator (a photograph of a rainbow trout) was examined in the laboratory. Attack distances are shortened following presentation of a predator; this is particularly true when the prey are large (Fig. 1). The extent of the reduction of attack distance is directly related to predator presentation frequency, although there appears to be a minimum level to which it will decline (Fig. 2). Hungry fish and fish in the presence of a competitor (simulated by a mirror) are less responsive to the predator, suggesting a trade-off of energetic requirements and risk (Fig. 3 and Table 3). The effect of predation risk should be to reduce the relative proportion of large prey in a juvenile coho's diet, and its net rate of energy intake.  相似文献

Information about the genetic population structure of the Atlantic spotted dolphin [Stenella frontalis (G. Cuvier 1829)] in the western North Atlantic would greatly improve conservation and management of this species in USA waters. To this end, mitochondrial control region sequences and five nuclear microsatellite loci were used to test for genetic differentiation of Atlantic spotted dolphins in the western North Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico (n=199). Skin tissue samples were collected from 1994–2000. Significant heterozygote deficiencies in three microsatellite loci within samples collected off the eastern USA coast prompted investigation of a possible Wahlund effect, resulting in evidence for previously unsuspected population subdivision in this region. In subsequent analyses including three putative populations, two in the western North Atlantic (n=38, n=85) and one in the Gulf of Mexico (n=76), significant genetic differentiation was detected for both nuclear DNA (R ST=0.096, P≤0.0001) and mitochondrial DNA (Φ ST=0.215, P≤0.0001), as well as for all pair-wise population comparisons for both markers. This genetic evidence for population differentiation coupled to known biogeographic transition zones at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, evidence of female philopatry, and preliminary support for significant genetic differences between previously documented morphotypes of Atlantic spotted dolphins in coastal and offshore waters all indicate that the biology and life history of this species is more complex than previously assumed. Assumptions of large, panmictic populations might not be accurate in other areas where S. frontalis is continuously distributed (e.g., eastern Atlantic), and could have a detrimental effect on long-term viability and maintenance of genetic diversity in this species in regions where incidental human-induced mortality occurs.
