A series of experiments is presented that model the generation of internal gravity waves in the ocean by the forcing of turbulent eddies in the surface mixed layer.The experimental setup consists of a shallow mixed upper layer and a deep continuously stratified lower layer. A source of turbulence is dragged through the upper layer. Internal waves can freely propagate in the lower layer. The internal waves are measured using synthetic schlieren to determine the frequencies of the generated waves. Consistent with other studies, it is found that the characteristic frequencies of internal waves generated by turbulence are an approximate constant fraction of the buoyancy frequency.  相似文献

An experimental program was conducted to investigate vertical oil dispersion of surface oil spills under non-breaking regular waves. The variation in oil concentration caused by oil dispersion in a water column was studied to determine the vertical oil dispersion profile. The experiments were performed using different waves characteristics for different volumes of oil spill to evaluate the variation in oil concentration at three depths at two sampling stations. The correlations between oil concentration and the main parameters of wave characteristics, oil spill volume, sampling depth, and distance of sampling stations to spill location were assessed. The results revealed that the trend of variation in oil concentration versus wave steepness is linear. The results obtained from experimental measurements indicated that the oil concentrations at mid-depth were 44–77 % and the concentrations near the flume bed were 12–33 % of the concentration near the water surface.  相似文献

Gravity currents descending along slopes have typically been studied in quiescent environments, despite the fact that in many geophysical settings there is significant externally driven motion. Here we investigate how the head of a gravity current is influenced by interfacial internal waves at the pycnocline of a two-layer ambient water column. Our experimental measurements show that larger amplitude internal waves, interacting with the gravity current, reduce both the mass transport by the gravity current and its thickness. These results suggest that the ambient internal wave field should be considered when estimating transport by gravity currents in geophysical settings with strong internal waves, such as lakes and the coastal ocean.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to investigate the generation of internal waves induced by a barotropic tidal flow over continental shelf/slope topography in a two-layer stratified fluid. The interaction of the barotropic tide with the continental slope resulted in the formation of both linear and nonlinear waveforms, ranging from a linear wave of depression to a highly nonlinear internal bolus. The type of wave response was strongly dependent on the tidal forcing intensity and the position of the density interface relative to the shelf depth. Based on the values of the internal Froude number and the layer depth ratio, we delineate four distinct generation regimes, each with a distinct wave response.  相似文献

Rates of oxygen consumption and ammonium nitrogen excretion were measured on the solitary and/or aggregate generations of ten species of oceanic salps collected by SCUBA divers during cruises in the Atlantic Ocean (1982–1985). Species that were visibly more active had higher metabolic rates than did less active species. Rates were 1.5 to 2 times lower and O:N ratios were lower when salps were held before incubation than when incubation began at the time of collection. Respiration rate showed a better relationship to length than to weight, suggesting that metabolic activity may be connected mainly with swimming. O:N ratios were between 13 and 28 for most species and generations, but higher and more variable in Pegea spp. Exretion of urea was low or undetectable. In this paper we examine the characteristics of near-inertial internal Poincaré waves in Lake Michigan (USA) as discerned from field experiments and hydrodynamic simulations. The focus is on the determination of the lateral and vertical structure of the waves. Observations of near-inertial internal wave properties are presented from two field experiments in southern Lake Michigan conducted during the years 2009 and 2010 at Michigan City (IN, USA) and Muskegon (MI, USA), respectively. Spectra of thermocline displacements and baroclinic velocities show that kinetic and potential baroclinic energy is dominated by near-inertial internal Poincaré waves. Vertical structure discerned from empirical orthogonal function analysis shows that this energy is predominantly vertical mode 1. Idealized hydrodynamic simulations using stratifications from early summer (June), mid-summer (July) and fall (September) identify the basin-scale internal Poincaré wave structure as a combination of single- and two-basin cells, similar to those identified in Lake Erie by Schwab, with near-surface velocities largest in the center of the northern and southern basins. Near-inertial bottom kinetic energy is seen to have roughly constant magnitude over large swathes across the basin, with higher magnitude in the shallower areas like the Mid-lake Plateau, as compared with the deep northern and southern basins. The near-bottom near-inertial kinetic energy when mapped appears similar to the bottom topography map. The wave-induced vertical shear across thermocline is concentrated along the longitudinal axis of the lake basin, and both near-bottom velocities and thermocline shear are reasonably explained by a simple conceptual model of the expected transverse variability.  相似文献

A series of laboratory experiments was undertaken in a stratified two-layer fluid to investigate the energetics of the interaction between an internal solitary wave (ISW) and triangular obstacles, as well as to determine the partitioning of ISW energy and its subsequent dynamics. The ISW energy was dissipated as a result of internal breaking and turbulent mixing induced by wave instability. Tests involving different combinations of triangular obstacles in various heights and intervals and ISW of different amplitudes were performed. The wave features resulting from the interaction of an ISW and double obstacles were found to differ from those of single obstacle. The incident energy of an ISW was either reflecting back from the obstacles, dissipated through turbulent mixing, or transmitted over the double obstacles. Reduction in wave energy increased as the intervals between obstacles reduced. For two obstacles in different heights, energy dissipation was greater in the case with a higher obstacle ahead of a lower one. However, the overall performance was dependent on the relative height of the obstacles, relative water depth of the upper and bottom layer, in addition to the intervals between the obstacles.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of the abundant larger copepods, both adults and late copepodites, were observed day and night in the upper 500 m of the North Pacific central gyre in early November, 1971. Densities of the copepodites usually equalled or exceeded those of the adults. Copepod species with maximum densities at or above 100 m (Calanus spp., Nannocalanus minor f. major, Undinula darwini, and Euchaeta rimana) usually had no ontogenetic or diel migration. Neocalanus spp. and Haloptilus longicornis exhibited ontogenetic but not diel migrations. Nannocalanus minor f. minor, Aetideus acutus, Euchaeta media, Scolecithrix spp. and Pleuromamma spp., had both ontogenetic and diel migrations. Adults and copepodites of E. media and Pleuromamma spp. usually had their night modes at the same depth, but the daytime modes were at progressively deeper depths for progressively older stages. Daytime modes for adults and copepodites of A. acutus and Scolecithrix bradyi were at the same depth, but the nighttime modes were at shallower depths for progressively older stages. Night modes of all these migrators were usually in the mixed layer (75 m), where primary production rates were maximal. Congeners usually had similar migratory behavior, but competition probably has been a significant determinant of vertical distribution, since congeners, particularly sibling species, consistently had different depths of maximum occurrence during both day and night.  相似文献

Relatively little overlap exists in faunal assemblages in the oceanic waters found north of, and over the reef-like structure south of, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA. To better understand the mechanisms influencing the zoogeography of these animals, metabolic-temperature patterns have been characterized for both larvae and adults of animals collected in waters north and south of Cape Hatteras and from the Caribbean Sea. Southern affinity species from north of Cape Hatteras are the most metabolically labile of the groups, based on seasonal and laboratory-acclimated studies. Adults having a northern affinity found north of Cape Hatteras are metabolically depressed at high temperatures, whereas species from the reef area and the Caribbean are metabolically depressed at low temperatures. Metabolic rates of first stage zoea of crabs from the reef area are depressed at lower temperatures than larvae of the same stage of other species of crabs from the Cape Hatteras region or the Caribbean Sea.Supported by Grant NSF GB 7435 from the National Science Foundation. This paper presents the experimental results of impulsive waves caused by subaerial landslides. A wide range of effective parameters are considered and studied by performing 120 laboratory tests. Considered slide masses are both rigid and deformable. The effects of bed slope angle, water depth, slide impact velocity, geometry, shape and deformation on impulse wave characteristics have been inspected. The impulse wave features such as amplitude, period and also energy conversation are studied. The effects of slide Froude number and deformation on energy conversation from slide into wave are also investigated. Based on laboratory measured data an empirical equation for impulse wave amplitude and period have been presented and successfully verified using available data of previous laboratory works.  相似文献

Species-specific rates of photosynthetic carbon uptake (P), chlorophyll a content and P versus irradiance (P-I), have been measured for cells of Pyrocystis noctiluca and P. fusiformis isolated from natural populations collected in the euphotic zone within and below the surface mixed layer in the Sargasso Sea. These same measurements and the assay for ribulose bis-phosphate carboxylase (RuBP-Case), have been made for cultures of P. noctiluca in a 12 h L: 12 h D photoperiod at 9 different constant or at changing light intensities. In nature chl a cell-1 was constant throughout the euphotic zone. The photosynthetic capacity (Pmax), of cells captured below the surface mixed layer was lower by a factor of 10 compared with cells collected from the surface mixed layer. The Pmax for P. noctiluca collected and incubated within the surface mixed layer was the same as for cell cultures grown under high light, non nutrient-limiting conditions, suggesting that photosynthesis in the natural system was not nutrient limited. In laboratory cultures under constant low light intensities, chl a cell-1 increased by a factor of 5 while both Pmax and RuBPCase activity decreased by a factor of ca 4 compared with high light intensities. In changing light intensities both Pmax and RuBPCase activities were decreased by factors of 4 during low light intervals while chl a cell-1 approached a constant intermediate value. The change in chl a cell-1 in response to prolonged exposure to constant low light intensities was first order with a rate constant of 0.33 d-1. For all irradiance conditions in culture, the P-I dependence could be described by the simple Michaelis-Menten formula. The ratio of Pmax to KI, (the light intensity where P=Pmax/2) was a constant with a Coefficient of Variation of 12%: The constancy of this ratio, the parallel changes in RuBPCase activity with Pmax and the constant chl a cell-1 in the Sargasso Sea imply that for P. noctiluca and presumably P. fusiformis in nature, a dark enzymatic step rather than changes in photosynthetic pigment concentrations may regulate the photosynthetic capacity in the changing photic environment.Contribution no. 1141 from McCollum-Pratt Institute and Department of Biology, The Johns Hopkins University. Laboratory simulation of light-focusing by water-surface waves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A laboratory system has been developed to simulate wave-induced irradiance fluctuations that occur in the top few metres of the sea under sunny surface conditions. A principle of operation is that the fluctuations are produced after refraction of light by water waves generated in the tank. Simulated irradiance consists of repetitive high-amplitude flashes resulting from a lens-effect of the waves. Statistical properties of flashes are similar to those recorded at sea. In our laboratory simulation, the flashes that exceed an amplitude level of 1.5 (where is the time-averaged irradiance) have a mean frequency of about 230 min-1, and a typical duration of 5 to 20 ms. The frequency of the flashes decreases exponentially with increasing amplitude level. The system simulates timeaveraged irradiance comparable to full sunlight at shallow depths (800 mol quanta m-2 s-1 over the visible spectral region), and provides light with a reasonable spectral composition. The simulation method was designed for studying responses of phytoplankton, but applications involving optical aspects can also be foreseen.  相似文献

Several tissues (e.g. kidney, blood, digestive gland) in oceanic cephalopods which do not exhibit in vivo bioluminescence, luminesce when homogenized in the presence of air or when simply exposed to air in a vial (blood). The source of the luminescence appears to be a luciferin: treatment of kidney homogenates and blood with a photophore extract presumably containing luciferase resulted in a 20-fold increase in light production. Luminescence was also found in the renal fluid, which may be the source of luminescent clouds produced by squids. The variability in luminescence found in some tissues of cephalopods appeared to be related to feeding. Luminescence was also detected in the digestive glands of midwater octopods.  相似文献

The production of bacterioplankton in tropical waters is shown to be a major food source for filter feeders. Since this production greatly exceeds autotrophic production by phytoplankton, the external energy source is believed to be soluble organic material transported from temperate latitudes. In the latter environment this material is produced as part of excessive autotrophic production, but its destruction by bacteria is inhibited at low temperature. The organic material is transported by global circulation to warm tropical waters, where it is utilized to form particulate organic aggregates which serve as food for filter feeders.  相似文献

Slices from the hepatopancreas of various oceanic curstaceans incorporated radioactivity into wax esters from 14C glucose and 14C aspartic acid to a lesser extent and from 14C palmitic acid to a much greater extent. Radioactivity was incorporated from 14C palmitic acid into both fatty acid and fatty alcohol moieties of wax esters, the percentage of total radioactivity present in alcohol moieties being greater in deep-living than in shallow-living species. Cell-free preparations from the hepatopancreas but not from muscle, supplemented with ATP and reduced pyridine nucleotides, incorporated radioactivity from 1-14C palmitoyl Coenzyme A into both fatty alcohol and fatty acid moieties of wax esters. Incorporation into fatty alcohol was NADPH- rather than NADH-specific. Preparations from deep-living species had a greater percentage of total radioactivity in the fatty alcohol moieties of wax esters than preparations from shallow-living species. We conclude that the level of wax esters in a given species is correlated with the rate at which the species biosynthesises these lipids de novo; deep-living species have higher rates of wax ester biosynthesis and higher levels of wax esters than shallow-living species. The results support the thesis that wax esters in oceanic crustaceans are derived largely from the animals' internal biosynthetic activities, presumably in response to particular biochemical and/or physiological requirements, rather than from their diets.  相似文献

Phytoplankton growth dynamics were investigated throughout the photic zone at three stations in the North Central Pacific Gyre south of the Hawaiian Islands. Ambient nutrients, vertical light profiles, phytoplankton biomass, and primary production were measured. Photosynthetically active radiation, measured with a submarine quantaspectrophotometer, illustrates vertical variations in photic spectral quality and is presented as incident quanta flux of visible light. Primary production was determined throughout the photic zone under conditions where the samples were collected, injected with 14C, and incubated under entirely in situ conditions to eliminate preincubation perturbation and to ensure representative response to both light quality and quantity. Oceanic phytoplankton activity is described as a continuous function of incident light under the prevailing low nutrient conditions, and the important rate constants are calculated based upon field data from oligotrophic regions. The vertical profiles of phytoplankton activity and incident quanta flux are analyzed in terms of a substrate-limited system according to the equqtion A (z) = A max (q ((z)q o) [K + (q ((z)) – q (o], where q(z) is the quanta flux at a given depth, and A(z) is the phytoplankton assimilation number at that depth. This is done on the rationale that systematically declining levels of quanta flux, vertically, represent corresponding declines in the availability of substrate for the photochemical processes of photosynthesis. Comparison of data from isolated oceanic regions with those from a station located 15 miles off Oahu show that although large differences in the phytoplankton parameters are evident throughout the entire photic zones of these regions, the hyperbolic A(z)-q(z) relationship describes the data fairly well in both cases. The comparison suggests that this relationship may apply to the general case of an oligotrophic water column. Ecological niche theory predicts segregation mechanisms that mitigate potential competition between closely related organisms. However, little is known outside the breeding season, when central-place foraging animals may move on larger scales. This study tested for segregation mechanisms within the same 2007 inter-breeding period on three neighboring populations of avian predators from the southern Indian Ocean: Eastern Rockhopper Penguins Eudyptes filholi from Crozet and Kerguelen and Northern Rockhopper Penguins E. moseleyi from Amsterdam. Using state-of-the-art geolocation tracking and stable isotope analysis techniques, we quantified and compared the ecological niches in time, space, and diet. The three populations showed large-scale movements over deep oceanic waters near the Subantarctic Front, with generally little individual variation. The two neighboring populations of Eastern Rockhopper Penguins showed strikingly distinct distribution in space, while foraging in similar habitats and at the same trophic level (crustacean-eaters). In contrast, Northern Rockhoppers showed marked spatial overlap with birds of the sibling Eastern species, but their temporal delay of two months enabled them to effectively avoid significant overlap. Our results highlight parsimonious mechanisms of resource partitioning operating at the population level that may explain how animals from neighboring localities can coexist during the nonbreeding period.  相似文献
