In a controlled environment experiment, using Cd spiked soil, lettuce plants were grown under a range of DTPA levels and were subsequently harvested to determine levels of phytoaccumulation. Cadmium phytoaccumulation significantly increased with increasing soil Cd level (P < 0.05) but unexpectedly decreased with increasing DTPA levels, despite the fact that solubility of Cd was increased in the soil. Cadmium translocation (from root to shoot) increased after DTPA application. Lettuce growth was inhibited by both Cd and DTPA (at and above 10 and 500 mg kg?1 respectively), as a result of higher Cd mobility and subsequent toxicity which was caused by DTPA higher dosages. Metal solubility in the soil (ranged between 2.8 and 26.5 mg kg?1) was found to be significantly higher (P < 0.01) as compared to control with increasing DTPA levels even after 3 months of DTPA application. Cadmium tissue concentration in all DTPA treatments was less than in the corresponding control treatment, indicating a negative effect of DTPA application on Cd uptake. In conclusion, lettuce was an unsuitable plant species for Cd accumulation, at least when associated with a DTPA chelator. 相似文献

To seasonally evaluate littoral contamination, toxicity and quality values of sediments from the Gulf of Cádiz, we measured chemical concentrations and conducted toxicity tests in winter and summer and linked these results by means of multivariate analysis. Sediment samples were subjected to two separate, replicated sediment toxicity tests (Microdeutopus gryllotalpa amphipod survival, and Ruditapes philippinarum clam reburial), and to comprehensive sediment chemistry analyses (grain size, organic carbon, 14 heavy metals, and the surfactant linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS)). Only sediments associated with an untreated urban discharge were toxic and related to high levels of surfactant LAS, Ag, and Pb. Multivariate analysis indicated that variables and chemicals associated with geochemical matrix and background levels (specific surface, Fe, Zn, Cu, V, Ni, and Co), chemicals associated with untreated urban discharge sources, and toxicity effects showed no seasonal variability. Only copper concentrations showed seasonal differences, being toxic during the winter and not toxic during summer. Multivariate analysis permits us to derive sediment quality values (SQVs); in terms of concentrations at or below which biological effects were not measured (mg kg(-1) dry sediment), are: LAS, 2.6; lead, 66.8; silver, 0.78; copper, 69.6. 相似文献

This paper presents the contribution to population exposure (PE) of regional background fine primary (PPM2.5) and secondary inorganic (SIA) particulate matter and its impact on mortality in Europe during 1997–2003 calculated with a chemistry transport model. Contributions to concentrations and PE due to emissions from shipping, Western (WEU), Eastern (EEU), and Northern Europe are compared.WEU contributes about 40% to both PPM2.5 and SIA concentrations, whereas the EEU contribution to PPM2.5 is much higher (43% of total PPM2.5) than to SIA (29% of total SIA). The population weighted average concentration (PWC) of PPM2.5 is a factor of 2.3 higher than average (non-weighted) concentrations, whereas for SIA the PWC is only a factor 1.6 higher. This is due to PPM2.5 concentrations having larger gradients and being relatively high over densely populated areas, whereas SIA is formed outside populated areas. WEU emissions contribute relatively more than EEU to PWC and mortality due to both PPM2.5 and SIA in Europe.The number of premature deaths in Europe is estimated to 301 000 per year due to PPM2.5 exposure and 245 000 due to SIA, despite 3.3 times higher average SIA concentrations. This is due to population weighting and assumed (and uncertain) higher relative risk of mortality for PPM2.5 components (2.8 times higher RR for PPM2.5). This study indicates that it might be more efficient, for the health of the European population, to decrease primary PM emissions (especially in WEU) than to decrease precursors of SIA, but more knowledge on the toxicity of different PM constituents is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. 相似文献

Abstract The solubility products (Ksp) of 1:1 complexes of glyphosate, [N‐(phosphonomethyl)glycine], with Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+, were determined in buffered (pH 7.0) distilled water, moist Ottawa sand, sandy loam and clay loam soils, each adjusted to 0.02 M with respect to KNO3. The Ksp values decreased in the order of Mg ? Ca > Mn > Zn > Cu > Fe, regardless of the medium in which they were determined. The constants measured in Ottawa sand were similar to those in water, but those in the forestry soils depended upon the type of metal ion involved. The values for the Mg, Ca, Mn and Zn complexes were about 2 to 3 times lower in sandy loam soil than those in water, but those in clay loam were about 3 to 10 times lower. The Ksp of the Cu and Fe complexes were similar to those in water regardless of the soil type used. In a bioassay experiment using tomato plants, immersed in the saturated solutions of the complexes or planted in the sand and soils containing saturated solutions of the complexes, no mortality occurred although slight inhibition in growth was observed in all cases. The most soluble complexes of Mg and Ca caused the most reduction in plant height, while the least soluble complex of Fe caused little growth inhibition. The Zn, Cu and Mn complexes caused some growth inhibition depending on their Ksp values. The larger the solubility product, the greater the concentration of glyphosate ion in solution, and the greater the growth inhibition. In a similar experiment using white spruce seedlings, growth inhibition was insignificant over the 12‐d bioassay period. 相似文献

We aimed to understand relationships of the weather as biometeorological and hospital admissions due to diseases of arteries and veins by subtypes, which have been scarcely studied, in a national setting in recent years. This is an ecological study. Ten percent of daily hospital admissions from the included hospitals (n?=?1,618) across Germany that were available between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2011 (n?=?5,235,600) were extracted from Statistisches Bundesamt, Germany. We identified I70-I79 Diseases of arteries, arterioles and capillaries and I80-I89 Diseases of veins, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes by International Classification of Diseases version 10 as the study outcomes. Daily weather data from 64 weather stations that covered 13 German states including air temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover, radiation flux and vapour pressure were obtained and generated into physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). Two-way fractional-polynomial prediction was plotted with 95 % confidence intervals. For most of the subtypes from diseases of arteries and veins, hospital admissions slightly peaked in spring and dropped when PET was at 10 °C. There were no other large differences across 12 months. Admissions of peripheral vascular diseases, arterial embolism and thrombosis, phlebitis and thrombophlebitis, oesophageal varices and nonspecific lymphadenitis peaked when PET was between 0 and ?10 °C, while others peaked when PET was between 0 and 10 °C. More medical resources could have been needed on days when PETs were at ?10 to 10 °C than on other days. Adaptation to such weather change for health professionals and the general public would seem to be imperative. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope
As a consequence of flood events, runoff and remobilized sediments may cause an increase of ecotoxicologically relevant effects from contaminant reservoirs. Aquatic and terrestrial organisms as well as cattle and areas of settlement are exposed to dislocated contaminants during and after flood events. In this study, the impacts of two flood events triggered by intense rain at the rivers Neckar and Rhine (Southern Germany) were studied. Effects in correlation to flood flow were assessed at the river Neckar using samples collected at frequent intervals. River Rhine suspended particulate matter (SPM) was sampled over a longer period at normal flow and during a flood event. Three cell lines (H4L1.1c4, GPC.2D.Luc, RTL-W1) were used to compare Ah receptor agonist activity in different biotest systems. Water and sediment samples were collected in the lower Paraná delta at four sites with different levels of exposure to pollution to evaluate the anthropogenic impact through chemical analyses and mortality bioassays. Individual polychlorinated biphenyls, chlorinated pesticides, aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals were measured in waters, porewaters and sediments. The same three phases were also subjected to toxicity assays with straight-hinged juveniles of Corbicula fluminea. Concentrations of several pollutants were above levels recommended for the protection of aquatic life: in waters, Zn, Cu and Cr were 1.6-4.9 times higher, whereas in the sediments Cr was 1.8-3.6, and benzo(a)pyrene was 2.8-5.6 times higher. Pollutant concentrations followed a clear geographic pattern with highest values in the densely populated area of the Reconquista and Luján rivers, lower levels in the San Antonio, and lowest loadings in the remote Paraná de las Palmas. This gradient was adequately matched by the pattern of mortality rates of C. fluminea early juveniles, which were highest in the Reconquista-Luján (40-93%) and lowest (and not significantly different from the control) in the Paraná (3.3-23%). Mortality rates also increased from surface waters (3.3-53%), to porewaters (12-73%), to sediments (23-93%). Although toxicity was probably mainly due to dissolved contaminants, agreement between chemical and biological evidence of pollution was best for the sediment compartment, whereas porewater and surface water showed a higher degree of variability. 相似文献

Mechanically produced abrasion particles and resuspension processes are responsible for a significant part of the PM10 emissions of road traffic. However, specific differentiation between PM10 emissions due to abrasion and resuspension from road pavement is very difficult due to their similar elemental composition and highly correlated variation in time. In this work Mobile Load Simulators were used to estimate PM10 emission factors for pavement abrasion and resuspension on different pavement types for light and heavy duty vehicles.From the experiments it was derived that particle emissions due to abrasion from pavements in good condition are quite low in the range of only a few mg·km?1 per vehicle if quantifiable at all. Considerable abrasion emissions, however, can occur from damaged pavements. Resuspension of deposited dust can cause high and extremely variable particle emissions depending strongly on the dirt load of the road surface. Porous pavements seem to retain deposited dust better than dense pavements, thus leading to lower emissions due to resuspension compared to pavements with a dense structure (e.g. asphalt concrete). Tyre wear seemed not to be a quantitatively significant source of PM10 emissions from road traffic. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the trace elements, Pb, Cd, and Cr in honey samples from eight different regions from the state of Paraná (Brazil), using slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Chemometric analysis (principal component analysis (PCA)) was applied to classify honey samples according to their levels of the trace elements Pb, Cd, and Cr, which is also related to the geographical origin of honey samples. The mean concentration for the elements followed the order Pb?>?Cr >?>?Cd. The mean values were 200?±?76, 88?±?14, and 4.1?±?4 ng g?1 for Pb, Cr, and Cd, respectively. It could be verified that honey samples are geographically separated, especially with regard to Pb and Cd contents. Thus, honey can be considered a bioindicator of environmental contamination, suggesting possible contamination in soil, water, and air. This contamination can be related to natural or anthropogenic sources present in the study regions. 相似文献

Terraces are traditional engineered ecosystems that affect the hydro-geological equilibrium, slope stability, and local communities. The aims of this paper are (i) identifying environmental factors that affect terrace stability in the Amalfi Coast, (ii) defining agriculturalists’ observations on environmental changes within that system and (iii) exploring potentiality of these observations to better define conservation strategies. All available data on physical and ecological factors recognized to affect the terrace system were collected and analyzed. Interviews were conducted with agriculturalists to obtain long-term observations on environmental factors that interact with this system. Landslides are more frequent where rainfall is high and during winter. Fires have an uneven annual distribution, with higher frequency during summers. Agriculturalists detailed complex interactions among environmental factors, economic elements, and terraces. These observations represent a valuable resource for defining causes and effects of abandonment and for better addressing conservation strategies.

Food consumption has been widely reported to be the main source of human exposure to PCBs. A total of 47 samples of food products on sale in supermarkets in the United Kingdom were thus analyzed for PCBs to determine residual levels in oil and oil-based products. The objective was to compare the measured levels of total PCBs (ΣPCBs) in food products to those reported in various environmental compartments. Combined extraction and online clean up was achieved using Accelerated Solvent Extraction? (ASE) to recover target analytes for analysis by GC-MSD (gas chromatography mass spectrometry). Σ PCBs (ng/g) in each product were in the ranges of 4.73–44.38 edible oil; 1.40–6.18 mayonnaise; 1.21–6.25 salad cream; 1.28–5.64 seafood sauce, and 0.97–15.08 exotic dressing. The level of human exposure to PCBs in all products was < 1 μg/kg body weight/day when considering a 70 kg male or 57 kg female, possibly reflecting the reported decline of PCBs in the environment. 相似文献

Photodegradation of gaseous α-pinene by a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) in a spiral reactor was investigated under various gaseous reaction media and residence time, and their respective effects on types and biodegradability of the intermediates were studied. Analysis of carbon amounts showed that about 33% and 43% of total carbon were converted to soluble organic carbon in the air medium with a relative humidity (RH) of 35-40% at empty bed residence times (EBRTs) of 18 and 45 s. Based on the identified intermediates by GC/MS and IC, a photodegradation pathway was proposed by the combined roles of photolysis, OH. photooxidation and O? photooxidation. Biodegradability to active sludge, toxicity to Chlorella vulgaris and 96-well microplates showed that α-pinene could be largely converted to more biodegradable and less toxic compounds through photodegradation in the air reaction medium with a RH of 35-40% at an EBRT of 18s, in which the initial concentration was 600 mg m?3. Therefore, VUV photodegradation could be applied as an effective pre-treatment method for detoxification and biodegradability improvement under the optimized photodegradation conditions. Such results supported the potential use of VUV photodegradation to improve the removal capacity of conventional biological treatments for hydrophobic and poorly biodegradable compounds. 相似文献

Altamira Cave (north of Spain) contains one of the world's most prominent Paleolithic rock art paintings, which are threatened by a massive microbial colonization of ceiling and walls. Previous studies revealed that exchange rates between the cave and the external atmosphere through the entrance door play a decisive role in the entry and transport of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) and nutrients to the interior of the cave. A spatial-distributed sampling and measurement of carrier (CO2) and trace (CH4) gases and isotopic signal of CO2 (δ13C) inside the cave supports the existence of a second connection (active gas exchange processes) with the external atmosphere at or near the Well Hall, the innermost and deepest area of the cave. A parallel aerobiological study also showed that, in addition to the entrance door, there is another connection with the external atmosphere, which favors the transport and increases microorganism concentrations in the Well Hall. This double approach provides a more complete knowledge on cave ventilation and revealed the existence of unknown passageways in the cave, a fact that should be taken into account in future cave management. 相似文献

In order to provide reliable pollutant and meteorological exposure estimates for an epidemiological study of asthmatics residing in two Houston neighborhoods, a dedicated three-tier air monitoring system was established. This consisted of fixed site ambient air monitoring at the center of each study area, a mobile van performing simultaneous indoor and outdoor measurements at selected residences of study participants, and a limited amount of direct personal monitoring for half of the participants. Monitored pollutants Included all criteria pollutant gases, as well as aeroallergens, aldehydes, TSP, and IP. Laboratory analyses provided concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, and trace elements. Continuous measurements of several meteorological parameters also were obtained. Intensive quality assurance and data validation efforts resulted in a high percentage of valid data for most pollutants. Ozone was the only measured pollutant that exceeded the NAAQS during the six-month (May to October) study period. The monitoring scheme allowed important pollutant concentration differences to be detected between day and night, between Indoors and outdoors, and among various indoor environments. The use of these monitoring data in combination with personal activity and household characteristics data to generate estimates of personal exposures for the epidemiological analysis will be described in a subsequent paper. 相似文献

Integrative assessment of coastal pollution in a Ría coastal system (Galicia, NW Spain): correspondence between sediment chemistry and toxicity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Elutriate embryo-larval bioassays with sea-urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) and ascidians (Ciona intestinalis) were conducted concurrently with trace metal analyses as part of an integrative assessment of sediment pollution at Ría de Pontevedra (Galicia, NW Spain). High metal contents in sediments were found in localised areas from the inner part of the estuary indicating a clear anthropogenic influence. In particular, very high Cu, Zn and Pb levels were found at sites P2 and P3, which were also the most toxic to the embryo-larval bioassays. Sediment quality guidelines were used to help in the ecological interpretation of sediment chemistry data and to identify pollutants of concern. Cu and Zn in P3 were consistently above the effects range median (ERM) values, which seem to be good predictors of toxicity to sea-urchin and ascidian embryos. A toxic unit approach, based on published EC(50) values and metal levels in elutriates, was used to assess the harmful ecological effects associated to sediment chemistry. Toxicity detected in P3 may be explained on the basis of the toxic unit model; however, the high toxicity detected at P2 may be attributable not only to the metals quantified in the analyses but also to unmeasured organic pollutants. Multidimensional scaling applied independently to the toxicology and chemistry data resulted in a good agreement between both types of configurations. Moreover, the Mantel test revealed a significant correlation (r(M)=0.481; p=0.019) between metal concentrations and toxicity data profiles, supporting the correspondence between configurations. 相似文献
