Selective redox degradation of chlorinated aliphatics by Fenton reaction in pyrite suspension was investigated in a closed system. Carbon tetrachloride (CT) was used as a representative target of perchlorinated alkanes and trichloroethylene (TCE) was used as one of highly chlorinated alkenes. Degradation of CT in Fenton reaction was significantly enhanced by pyrite used as an iron source instead of soluble Fe. Pyrite Fenton showed 93% of CT removal in 140 min, while Fenton reaction with soluble Fe(II) showed 52% and that with Fe(III) 15%. Addition of 2-propanol to the pyrite Fenton system significantly inhibited degradation of TCE (99% to 44% of TCE removal), while degradation of CT was slightly improved by the 2-propanol addition (80-91% of CT removal). The result suggests that, unlike oxidative degradation of TCE by hydroxyl radical in pyrite Fenton system, an oxidation by the hydroxyl radical is not a main degradation mechanism for the degradation of CT in pyrite Fenton system but a reductive dechlorination by superoxide can rather be the one for the CT degradation. The degradation kinetics of CT in the pyrite Fenton system was decelerated (0.13-0.03 min−1), as initial suspension pH decreased from 3 to 2. The formation of superoxide during the CT degradation in the pyrite Fenton system was observed by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The formation at initial pH 3 was greater than that at initial pH 2, which supported that superoxide was a main reductant for degradation of CT in the pyrite Fenton system.  相似文献

The white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor degraded trichloroethylene (TCE), a highly oxidized chloroethene, and produced 2,2,2-trichloroethanol and carbon dioxide as the main products of degradation, based on the results obtained using [13C]-TCE as the substrate. For a range of concentrations of TCE between 2 and 20 mg l(-1), 53% of the theoretical maximum chloride expected from complete degradation of TCE was observed. Laccase was shown to be induced by TCE, but did not appear to play a role in TCE degradation. Cytochrome P-450 appears to be involved in TCE degradation, as evidenced by marked inhibition of degradation of TCE in the presence of 1-aminobenzotriazole, a known inhibitor of cytochrome P-450. Our results suggested that chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde) was an intermediate of the TCE degradation pathway. The results indicate that the TCE degradation pathway in T. versicolor appears to be similar to that previously reported in mammals and is mechanistically quite different from bacterial TCE degradation.  相似文献

The fate of chlorinated ethenes in a large contaminant plume originating from a tetrachloroethene (PCE) source in a sandy aquifer in Denmark was investigated using novel methods including compound-specific carbon and chlorine isotope analysis and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) methods targeting Dehaloccocoides sp. and vcrA genes. Redox conditions were characterized as well based on concentrations of dissolved redox sensitive compounds and sulfur isotopes in SO(4)(2-). In the first 400 m downgradient of the source, the plume was confined to the upper 20 m of the aquifer. Further downgradient it widened in vertical direction due to diverging groundwater flow reaching a depth of up to 50 m. As the plume dipped downward and moved away from the source, O(2) and NO(3)(-) decreased to below detection levels, while dissolved Fe(2+) and SO(4)(2-) increased above detectable concentrations, likely due to pyrite oxidation as confirmed by the depleted sulfur isotope signature of SO(4)(2-). In the same zone, PCE and trichloroethene (TCE) disappeared and cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) became the dominant chlorinated ethene. PCE and TCE were likely transformed by reductive dechlorination rather than abiotic reduction by pyrite as indicated by the formation of cDCE and stable carbon isotope data. TCE and cDCE showed carbon isotope trends typical for reductive dechlorination with an initial depletion of (13)C in the daughter products followed by an enrichment of (13)C as degradation proceeded. At 1000 m downgradient of the source, cDCE was the dominant chlorinated ethene and had reached the source δ(13)C value confirming that cDCE was not affected by abiotic or biotic degradation. Further downgradient (up to 1900 m), cDCE became enriched in (13)C by up to 8 ‰ demonstrating its further transformation while vinylchloride (VC) concentrations remained low (<1 μg/L) and ethene was not observed. The correlated shift of carbon and chlorine isotope ratios of cDCE by 8 and 3.9 ‰, respectively, the detection of Dehaloccocides sp genes, and strongly reducing conditions in this zone provide strong evidence for reductive dechlorination of cDCE. The significant enrichment of (13)C in VC indicates that VC was transformed further, although the mechanism could not be determined. The transformation of cDCE was the rate limiting step as no accumulation of VC occurred. In summary, the study demonstrates that carbon-chlorine isotope analysis and qPCR combined with traditional approaches can be used to gain detailed insight into the processes that control the fate of chlorinated ethenes in large scale plumes.  相似文献

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is considered a reliable technology to treat groundwater contaminated with high concentrations of organic contaminants. An ISCO oxidant, persulfate anion (S(2)O(8)(2-)) can be activated by ferrous ion (Fe(2+)) to generate sulfate radicals (E(o)=2.6 V), which are capable of destroying trichloroethylene (TCE). The property of polarity inhibits S(2)O(8)(2-) or sulfate radical (SO(4)(-)) from effectively oxidizing separate phase TCE, a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). Thus the oxidation primarily takes place in the aqueous phase where TCE is dissolved. A bench column study was conducted to demonstrate a conceptual remediation method by flushing either S(2)O(8)(2-) or Fe(2+) through a soil column, where the TCE DNAPL was present, and passing the dissolved mixture through either a Fe(2+) or S(2)O(8)(2-) fluid sparging curtain. Also, the effect of a solubility enhancing chemical, hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD), was tested to evaluate its ability to increase the aqueous TCE concentration. Both flushing arrangements may result in similar TCE degradation efficiencies of 35% to 42% estimated by the ratio of TCE degraded/(TCE degraded+TCE remained in effluent) and degradation byproduct chloride generation rates of 4.9 to 7.6 mg Cl(-) per soil column pore volume. The addition of HPCD did greatly increase the aqueous TCE concentration. However, the TCE degradation efficiency decreased because the TCE degradation was a lower percentage of the relatively greater amount of dissolved TCE by HPCD. This conceptual treatment may serve as a reference for potential on-site application.  相似文献

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is a technology used for groundwater remediation. This laboratory study investigated the use of the oxidant sodium persulfate for the chemical oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) at near ambient temperatures (10, 20 and 30 degrees C) to determine the influence of pH (pH=4, 7 and 9) on the reaction rate (i.e., pseudo-first-order rate constants) over the range of temperatures utilized. TCE solutions (60 mg l(-1); 0.46 mM) were prepared in phosphate buffered RO water and a fixed persulfate/TCE molar ratio of 50/1 was employed in all tests. Half-lives of TCE degradation at 10, 20 and 30 degrees C (pH 7) were 115.5, 35.0 and 5.5h, respectively. Maximum TCE degradation occurred at pH 7. Lowering system pH resulted in a greater decrease in TCE degradation rates than increasing system pH. Radical scavenging tests used to identify predominant radical species suggested that the sulfate radical (SO(4)(.-)) predominates under acidic conditions and the hydroxyl radical (.OH) predominates under basic conditions. In a side by side comparison of TCE degradation in a groundwater vs. unbuffered RO water it was demonstrated that when the system pH is buffered to near neutral pH conditions due to the presence of natural occurring groundwater constituents that the TCE degradation rate is higher than in unbuffered RO water where the system pH dropped from 5.9 to 2.8. The results of this study suggest that in a field application of ISCO, pH should be monitored and adjusted to near neutral if necessary.  相似文献

Tetrakis-(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin cobalt was identified as a highly-active reductive dechlorination catalyst for chlorinated ethylenes. Through batch reactor kinetic studies, degradation of chlorinated ethylenes proceeded in a step-wise fashion with the sequential replacement of Cl by H. For perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), the dechlorination products were quantified and the C2 mass was accounted for. Degradation of the chlorinated ethylenes was found to be first-order in substrate. Dechlorination trials with increasing catalyst concentration showed a linearly increasing pseudo first-order rate constant which yielded rate laws for PCE and TCE degradation that are first-order in catalyst. The dechlorination activity of this catalyst was compared to that of another water-soluble cobalt porphyrin under the same reaction conditions and found to be comparable for PCE and TCE.  相似文献

Stable hydrogen isotopes of two chlorinated solvents, trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), provided by five different manufacturers, were determined and compared to their carbon and chlorine isotopic signatures. The isotope ratio for delta2H of different TCEs ranged between +466.9 per thousand and +681.9 per thousand, for delta13C between -31.57 per thousand and -27.37 per thousand, and for delta37Cl between -3.19 per thousand and +3.90 per thousand. In the case of the TCAs, the isotope ratio for delta2H ranged between -23.1 per thousand and +15.1 per thousand, for delta13C between -27.39 per thousand and -25.84 per thousand, and for delta37Cl between -3.54 per thousand and +1.39 per thousand. As well, a column experiment was carried out to dechlorinate tetrachloroethylene (PCE) to TCE using iron. The dechlorination products have completely different hydrogen isotope ratios than the manufactured TCEs. Compared to the positive values of delta2H in manufactured TCEs (between +466.9 per thousand and +681.9 per thousand), the dechlorinated products had a very depleted delta2H (less than -300 per thousand). This finding has strong implications for distinguishing dechlorination products (PCE to TCE) from manufactured TCE. In addition, the results of this study show the potential of combining 2H/1H analyses with 13C/12C and 37Cl/35Cl for isotopic fingerprinting applications in organic contaminant hydrogeology.  相似文献

Modeling of cometabolic kinetics is important for better understanding of degradation reaction and in situ application of bio-remediation. In this study, a model incorporated cell growth and decay, loss of transformation activity, competitive inhibition between growth substrate and non-growth substrate and self-inhibition of non-growth substrate was proposed to simulate the degradation kinetics of phenol and trichloroethylene (TCE) by Pseudomonas putida. All the intrinsic parameters employed in this study were measured independently, and were then used for predicting the batch experimental data. The model predictions conformed well to the observed data at different phenol and TCE concentrations. At low TCE concentrations (<2 mg l(-1)), the models with or without self-inhibition of non-growth substrate both simulated the experimental data well. However, at higher TCE concentrations (>6 mg l(-1)), only the model considering self-inhibition can describe the experimental data, suggesting that a self-inhibition of TCE was present in the system. The proposed model was also employed in predicting the experimental data conducted in a repeated batch reactor, and good agreements were observed between model predictions and experimental data. The results also indicated that the biomass loss in the degradation of TCE below 2 mg l(-1) can be totally recovered in the absence of TCE for the next cycle, and it could be used for the next batch experiment for the degradation of phenol and TCE. However, for higher concentration of TCE (>6 mg l(-1)), the recovery of biomass may not be as good as that at lower TCE concentrations.  相似文献

Transformation of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (1,1,2,2-TeCA) by Fe(II) in 10% cement slurries was characterized using a batch reactor system. 1,1,2,2-TeCA was completely converted to trichloroethylene (TCE) within 1h in all experiments, even in controls with cement that did not include Fe(II). Therefore, complete degradation of 1,1,2,2-TeCA depends on the behavior of TCE. The half-life of TCE was observed to be 15d when concentrations of Fe(II) and 1,1,2,2-TeCA were 98mM and 0.245mM, respectively. The kinetics of TCE removal was observed to be dependent on Fe(II) dose, pH and initial substrate concentration. Pseudo-first-order rate constants linearly increased with Fe(II) dose up to 198mM when initial target concentration was 0.245mM. Pseudo-first-order kinetics generally described the degradation reactions of TCE at a specific initial concentration, but a modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was necessary to describe the degradation kinetics of TCE over a wide range of initial concentrations. A surface reaction of TCE on active solids, which were formed from Fe(II) and products of cement hydration appears to control observed TCE degradation kinetics.  相似文献

Stable carbon isotopic analysis, in combination with compositional analysis, was used to evaluate the performance of an iron permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for the remediation of ground water contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE) at Spill Site 7 (SS7), F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. Compositional data indicated that although the PRB appeared to be reducing TCE to concentrations below treatment goals within and immediately downgradient of the PRB, concentrations remained higher than expected at wells further downgradient (i.e. >9 m) of the PRB. At two wells downgradient of the PRB, TCE concentrations were comparable to upgradient values, and delta13C values of TCE at these wells were not significantly different than upgradient values. Since the process of sorption/desorption does not significantly fractionate carbon isotope values, this suggests that the TCE observed at these wells is desorbing from local aquifer materials and was present before the PRB was installed. In contrast, three other downgradient wells show significantly more enriched delta13C values compared to the upgradient mean. In addition, delta13C values for the degradation products of TCE, cis-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride, show fractionation patterns expected for the products of the reductive dechlorination of TCE. Since concentrations of both TCE and degradation products drop to below detection limit in wells within the PRB and directly below it, these downgradient chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations are attributed to desorption from local aquifer material. The carbon isotope values indicate that this dissolved contaminant is subject to local degradation, likely due to in situ microbial activity.  相似文献

Dehalogenation of trichloroethene (TCE) in the aqueous phase, either on palladium catalysts with hydrogen as the reductant or on metallic iron, was associated with strong changes in delta13C. In general, the delta13C of product phases were more negative than those of the parent compound and were enriched with time and fraction of TCE remaining. For dehalogenation with iron, the delta13C of TCE and products varied from -42/1000 to +5/1000. For the palladium experiments, the final product, ethane, reached the initial delta13C of TCE at completion of the dehalogenation reaction. During dehalogenation, the carbon isotope fractionation between TCE and product phases was not constant. The variation in delta13C of TCE and products offers a new monitoring tool that operates independently of the initial concentration of pollutants for abiotic degradation processes of TCE in the subsurface, and may be useful for evaluation of remediation efficiency.

The effects of H(2)O(2) and O(3) on the decomposition of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) by gamma-rays (gamma-rays) were investigated in this work. The combined gamma-rays/O(3) process showed a synergistic effect and enhanced the removal of TCE and PCE compared with gamma-rays alone, but, the gamma-rays/H(2)O(2) process did not increase the removal. This interesting result was successfully identified by an electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy/spin-trapping method that can quantify hydroxyl radicals, which is directly related to the efficiency of TCE and PCE decomposition. For gamma-rays/H(2)O(2) system, there was no difference of hydroxyl radical production between gamma-rays alone and gamma-rays/H(2)O(2). This indicates gamma-rays cannot activate H(2)O(2) to produce hydroxyl radicals and this causes no increase of TCE and PCE removals. To the contrary, the production of hydroxyl radicals was obviously increased in the case of gamma-rays/O(3) process. This suggests additional hydroxyl radicals are produced from the reaction of O(3) with the irradiation products of water such as hydrated electrons, hydrogen atoms, etc. and this accelerates the removal of TCE and PCE.  相似文献

Various clean-up technologies have been developed for the removal and/or destruction of trichloroethene (TCE) in the subsurface. Surfactant-aided soil washing followed by photodegradation could be a promising approach to such a task. The modelling of TCE photodegradation by UV in Brij 35 surfactant micelles is therefore investigated. Two stages of TCE degradation are observed in surfactant Brij 35 systems. A lag phase is observed at the commencement of the degradation, but the duration of the lag phase is significantly reduced as the initial pH increases. As the overall decay of TCE is also found to be faster at higher pH levels, it is suggested that the free radical reaction is dominant at high pH levels, and the formation of lag phases is mainly due to the deficiency of free radicals at lower pH levels. Since the period of the lag phase gradually decreases with the increase of initial pH level, and the two pseudo first-order reaction constants (one for the lag phase and one for the subsequent fast decay) for TCE decay in both stages are also pH dependent, a non-steady-state mathematical model is developed for the prediction of TCE photodegradation in Brij 35 solutions, in which the remaining fraction of TCE (C/C0) in the system can be determined at any instant by using a simple parameter of the initial system pH.  相似文献

The biosorprion and biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was investigated. The experimental results showed that at 25°C the adsorption equilibrium of TCE at concentrations from 10 mg/L to 200 mg/L could be described by the Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption could complete within 15 min. Results indicated that glucose could serve as a co-substrate and enhance TCE biodegradation through co-metabolism. The TCE biodegradation conformed to the first-order reaction kinetic, and the rate constant was 0.3212 day−1 at 25°C. In addition, results also indicated that TCE could serve as the sole substrate and be biodegraded under aerobic condition. No intermediate products such as DCE and VC were accumulated during the degradation.  相似文献

Oxidative dechlorination of chlorinated solvents by permanganate is an emerging technology for remediation of groundwater contaminated with dissolved chlorinated contaminants. In this study, the enhancement of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by permanganate in aqueous solution in the presence of surfactant was evaluated through a continuous stir batch reactor system with the presence of permanganate as the limiting reagent and free phase TCE. The TCE degradation was determined by continuous monitoring the amount of chloride produced, which was then reverted to the rate of permanganate consumption. It was found that the chloride production, an indication of TCE degradation, followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics with respect to KMnO(4) in the presence of free phase TCE. When no surfactants were present, the observed pseudo-first-order rate constant (k(obs)) was 0.08-0.19 min(-1) and the half-life (t(1/2)) was 4-9 min for MnO(4)(-). When the surfactant concentration was less than its critical micelle concentration (CMC), the k(obs) values increased to 0.42-0.46 min(-1) and the t(1/2) reduced to 1.5-1.7 min for MnO(4)(-). As the surfactant concentration was greater than the CMC, the k(obs) values increased to 0.56-0.58 min(-1) and the t(1/2) reduced to 1.2-1.3 min. The preliminary results showed that combination of permanganate with a proper type of surfactant can speed up contaminant removal.  相似文献

Biodegradation of trichloroethene (TCE) near a Dense Non Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) can enhance the dissolution rate of the DNAPL by increasing the concentration gradient at the DNAPL-water interface. Two-dimensional flow-through sand boxes containing a TCE DNAPL and inoculated with a TCE dechlorinating consortium were set up to measure this bio-enhanced dissolution under anaerobic conditions. The total mass of TCE and daughter products in the effluent of the biotic boxes was 3-6 fold larger than in the effluent of the abiotic box. However, the mass of daughter products only accounted for 19-55% of the total mass of chlorinated compounds in the effluent, suggesting that bio-enhanced dissolution factors were maximally 1.3-2.2. The enhanced dissolution most likely primarily resulted from variable DNAPL distribution rather than biodegradation. Specific dechlorination rates previously determined in a stirred liquid medium were used in a reactive transport model to identify the rate limiting factors. The model adequately simulated the overall TCE degradation when predicted resident microbial numbers approached observed values and indicated an enhancement factor for TCE dissolution of 1.01. The model shows that dechlorination of TCE in the 2D box was limited due to the short residence time and the self-inhibition of the TCE degradation. A parameter sensitivity analysis predicts that the bio-enhanced dissolution factor for this TCE source zone can only exceed a value of 2 if the TCE self-inhibition is drastically reduced (when a TCE tolerant dehalogenating community is present) or if the DNAPL is located in a low-permeable layer with a small Darcy velocity.  相似文献

The objective of the laboratory study is to examine the conditions under which transition metal ions (e.g., ferrous ion, Fe2+) could activate the persulfate anion (S2O8(2)-) to produce a powerful oxidant known as the sulfate free radical (SO4-*) with a standard redox potential of 2.6 V. The SO4-* is capable of destroying groundwater contaminants in situ such as trichloroethylene (TCE). Experiments using Fe2+ as an activator under various molar ratios of S2O8(2)-/Fe2+/TCE in an aqueous system indicated that partial TCE degradation occurred almost instantaneously and then the reaction stalled. Either destruction of SO4-* in the presence of excess Fe2+ or the rapid conversion of all Fe2+ to Fe3+ limited the ultimate oxidizing capability of the system. Sequential addition of Fe2+ in small increments resulted in an increased TCE removal efficiency. Therefore, it appeared that Fe2+ played an important role in generating SO4-*. An observation of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) variations revealed that the addition of sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) to the ferrous ion activated persulfate system could significantly decrease the strong oxidizing conditions. It was hypothesized that the thiosulfate induced reducing conditions might convert Fe3+ to a lower valence state of Fe2+, making the Fe2+ available to activate persulfate decomposition. The sequential addition of thiosulfate (S2O3(2)-), after the initial stalling of ferrous ion activated persulfate oxidation of TCE, resulted in an improvement in TCE removal. The ferrous ion activated persulfate-thiosulfate redox couple resulted in fairly complete TCE degradation in aqueous systems in a short time frame. In soil slurry systems, TCE degradation was slower in comparison to aqueous systems.  相似文献
