The population biology and life strategies of Chlorophthalmus agassizii were studied in the Ionian Sea (eastern–central Mediterranean) using the data collected during the experimental trawl surveys carried out from 1995 to 2000. Depth-related trends of both density and size were found. With depth the former decreased while the latter increased. A typical bigger–deeper phenomenon was detected: young-of-the-year individuals occur on the shelf during autumn–winter months and move towards bathyal bottoms as they grow. The sampled population was made up of several size–age groups. The maximum age of 8 years was identified by means of otolith readings. The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated from the age–length key (L =189.04±5.401 mm; k=0.24±0.021; t o=−1.20±0.132; φ′=3.94) and modal progression analysis (L =218.33±18.397 mm; k=0.164±0.028; t o=−1.694±0.171; φ′=3.89). Reproduction of this monoecious fish was observed during summer–early autumn. Considering the female portion of the gonad, the size at attainment of 50% maturity was 115 mm TL. The corresponding age is within the third year of life. The simultaneous occurrence of oocytes in different development stages was shown in the ovary. Both the asynchronous ovary and oocyte size distribution indicate that C. agassizii spawns more than once during a reproductive season (batch spawner). Functional fecundity (on average 3,018 hydrated oocytes) was between 37 and 69% of the absolute fecundity and increased significantly with the individual size. Since adult specimens are mostly distributed on the slope, eggs and larvae develop in epipelagic waters and migrate in-shore where juvenile forms recruit on the shelf. Juveniles migrate ontogenetically towards deeper bottoms and after 2–3 years start to reproduce annually within a life span greater than 10 years.  相似文献

Potential fecundity in Loligo vulgaris reynaudii was estimated to be about 17 000 eggs, calculated as the total number of discernible oocytes in the ovary and oviduct. Squid were observed to spawn up to 8140 eggs over a 36 h period in captivity. First estimations of actual fecundity are therefore between 8000 and 17 000 eggs. Factors complicating a more accurate estimation of actual fecundity in this species include difficulties with aquarium maintenance, their behaviour of spawning over a protracted period and in multiple sites, and atretic oocytes observed in both developing and mature ovaries. Detailed morphological and histological analysis of gonads collected at regular intervals over a complete spawning season will allow a more precise calculation of actual fecundity. Fungiacyathus marenzelleri (Vaughan, 1906) is a deep-water solitary coral, cosmopolitan in distribution that is found at depths of 300–6,328 m. This study examined gametogenesis, inter-annual variability and reproductive periodicity of F. marenzelleri collected from Station M (34°50′N, 123°00′W) in the northeast Pacific at a depth of 4,100 m. Samples were collected (May, June, October 1996; August 1998; February, June 2001; and June 2002) and histologically processed with spermatogenic stage, oocyte size and fecundity measured. Four stages of spermatogenesis were identified and all males contained multiple stages of sperm development in each seasonal sample. Three stages of oocyte development were identified; previtellogenic (<28–150 μm), vitellogenic (150–300 μm) and late vitellogenic (300–400 μm). Comparison of mean oocyte diameters among sampling dates showed there were no inter-annual variations or seasonal differences. Overall, fecundity was 1,290 (±407) oocytes polyp−1, and with no significant differences between sample months. Fecundity was not polyp-size dependent. This study shows a similar quasi-continuous mode of reproduction to this species examined from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, but the fecundity is reduced by 50%. The reproductive output may fluctuate in relation to the input of organic material at this site, as shown by non-significant trends in the oocyte size-frequency and fecundity data. A quasi-continuous output of gametes would promote successful fertilisation and wide dispersal of the lecithotrophic larvae.  相似文献

The diel reproductive periodicity of Carangidae is poorly known but appears to be highly variable between species. Some species spawn during the day, others are believed to spawn at night, and it is demonstrated here that round scad, Decapterus punctatus, spawn at dusk. We collected D. punctatus in the eastern Gulf of Mexico during three April cruises (1995, 1996, and 1997). Based on histological criteria, size at 50% maturity was 113 mm fork length (FL) for males and 128 mm FL for females. The gonad-somatic index (GSI) of mature males was significantly different between hours and appeared to show diel periodicity. Diel periodicity was also observed in changes in female GSIs, whole oocyte diameters, and ovarian histology. The average GSI of mature females fluctuated two-fold between day and night, and the size distribution of whole oocytes in some fish was bimodal (at 0.3-0.4 and 0.7-0.8 mm diameter) at dusk rather than unimodal during most of the diel cycle. Histological preparations revealed that these rapid changes in ovarian GSIs and oocyte size distributions were the result of final oocyte maturation. Germinal vesicle migration was observed from 0900 to 1400 hours eastern standard time (EST), germinal vesicle breakdown was evident as early as 1100 hours EST, and ovulation occurred as early as 1800 hours EST. Spawning frequency (approximately every 5 days) was similar whether calculated from the proportion of females with hydrated oocytes during the afternoon or from the proportion of females with postovulatory follicles during the morning. Batch fecundity correlated with fish size and ranged from 5,500 to 34,700 hydrated eggs per individual. These findings do not support published hypotheses that young-of-the-year D. punctatus reproduce before their first winter or that D. punctatus reproductive output is bimodal within a year.  相似文献

The genetic basis of morphological traits in social insects remains largely unexplored. This is even true for individual body size, a key life-history trait. In the social insects, the size of reproductive individuals affects dispersal decisions, so that small size in queens is often associated with reduced dispersal, and large size with long-range dispersal and independent colony founding. Worker size is connected to division of labour when workers specialize in certain tasks according to their size. In many species, variation in worker size has been shown to increase colony performance. In this study, we present the first evidence of an additive genetic component to queen size in ants, using maternal half sib analysis. We also compared intra-colony size variation in colonies with high (queen doubly mated) versus low (queen singly mated) genetic variability. We found a high and significant heritability (h2=0.51) for queen size in one of the two study years, but not in the other. Size variation among queens was greater in colonies headed by a doubly mated queen in one of the study years, but not in the other. This indicates that genetic factors can influence queen size, but that environmental factors may override these under some circumstances. The heritability for worker size was low (h2=0.09) and non-significant. Increased genetic diversity did not increase worker size variation in the colonies. Worker size appeared largely environmentally determined, potentially allowing colonies to adjust worker size ratios to current conditions.Communicated by J. Heinze  相似文献

Stereological methods applied to reproductive cycle of Tapes rhomboides   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A population of Tapes rhomboides (Pennant) in the Bay of St. Malo, France, was studied for one and a half years (July 1984–October 1985) to determine spawning frequency and fecundity under natural conditions, using the techniques of qualitative histological staging, condition index calculation and quantitative stereology. Spawning took place twice a year, in late May and in July/September. There was an extended winter resting period. Gonad development and oocyte production were positively correlated with female body size. The annual fecundity in a 40 mm clam was about 5x105. Stereological techniques provided accurate information on oocyte dynamics within a gonad and the relationship with atretic processes. Each oocyte generation from the onset of the cycle to the winter resting stage was spawned eventually if conditions were suitable, or the oocytes were resorbed. Atresia of oocytes was seen throughout the reproductive period, but especially after the spring spawning and at the end of the summer.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Antipathes fiordensis Grange, a species endemic to south-western New Zealand, was followed from April 1994 to May 1995. Ten colonies were individually tagged in Doubtful Sound and sampled on a monthly basis in order to determine their reproductive activity. The fecundity of each of the five tagged female colonies was determined by estimating the total number of polyps per colony from photographs of each colony and by planimetry, the proportion of gravid polyps per colony, and the mean number of oocytes per gravid polyp. In addition, 56 colonies were sampled in March 1995 to estimate the sex ratio, height at sexual maturity, and mean sizes of females and males. A. fiordensis was found to be a dioecious species which, in the absence of gonads in the polyps, has no obvious external morphological differences between the sexes. Broadcast spawning of gametes is the likely mode of reproduction. Gametogenesis began in November 1994 and was highly synchronous within and between colonies, with spawning occurring in March 1995. The sex ratio in adults was 1:1. Colonies reached sexual maturity between the heights of 70 and 105 cm which, based on existing estimates of growth rate, corresponds to a minimum age for sexual maturity of about 31 yr. The largest oocytes measured ranged from 100 to 140 μm in size. Female colonies produced between 1.3 and 16.9 million oocytes, with the larger colonies dominating the reproductive output of the population. Oogenesis in polychaetes has, in most species, two main phases: a coelomic phase during which vitellogenesis occurs, and an ovarian phase. Details of the latter are known in very few species. Efficient reproduction requires coordination between these two phases of oocyte differentiation. The ovaries of Cirratulus cirratus (O. F. Müller) occur 2/segment throughout the fertile region of the body; 5 main stages of oocyte differentiation can be recognised on them: stem cells, oogonia, premeiotic oocytes, early oocytes and terminal oocytes. A quantitative study of the composition of the ovary throughout the reproductive cycle shows that the ovary size is approximately constant, but that the percentage of cells in the terminal oocyte stage is reduced to zero prior to spawning. This stage in oocyte differentiation is therefore a critical one, at which oogenesis may be arrested. The ovary alternates between a proliferative phase when the terminal oocytes are present, and a non-proliferative phase when they are absent. The overall rate of germ cell production for each ovary is low, less than 1 cell/ovary/day, and the, ovary tissue turnover time is greater than 2 years. A qualitative model describing the production of oocytes is presented, and the implications of the low rate of germ cell production are discussed. A low rate of germ cell proliferation, as in Cirratulus cirratus, implies that the rate of oocyte output into the coelom will be controlled by factors influencing the later stages of ovarian oocyte differentiation.  相似文献

Habitat selection by the hydrothermal vent limpet, Lepetodrilus fucensis, in Northeast Pacific hydrothermal vent ecosystems, may influence its reproductive output, as it occupies habitats with varying physico-chemical conditions that reflect the availability of nutritional resources. Histological techniques were used to determine size at first reproduction, gametogenesis, reproductive output, and fecundity in relation to shell length (SL), through examination of the gonads of male and female L. fucensis, collected from five different hydrothermal vent habitat types with different temperature anomalies and hydrothermal fluid flow vigour: vigorous (VIG), diffuse (DIF), tubeworm bushes (TWB), peripheral (PER), and senescent areas (SEN). Both male and female L. fucensis exhibited early maturity, with the first reproductive event occurring at 3.8 and 3.9 mm shell length, respectively. All stages of gamete development were present in the gonads of males and females, suggesting continuous gametogenesis and asynchronous reproduction in this species. Gametogenic maturity of limpets did not vary among actively venting habitats (VIG, DIF, TWB, and PER), but was significantly lower in males and females from SEN habitats. Mean oocyte diameter was largest in females from VIG habitats, and smallest in females from SEN habitats, than in those from the other habitats (DIF, TWB, and PER). Females from actively venting habitats also had greater actual fecundity than those from senescent habitats. While the gametogenic pattern of L. fucensis appears phylogenetically constrained, selection of actively venting habitats by L. fucensis maximizes its reproductive output. The multiple feeding strategies of L. fucensis may allow for a constant supply of energy to be allocated to reproduction in any habitat except senescent vents. Early maturity, high fecundity, and continuous production of gametes suggest a reproductive strategy characteristic of an opportunistic species, and may be contributing to the extremely abundant populations of L. fucensis observed in the Northeast Pacific vent ecosystem.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of spiny lobster, Panulirus penicillatus, was studied based on 2,068 lobsters, ranging from 34.28 to 131.60 mm carapace length (CL), sampled in Taitung coastal waters from September 2003 to December 2004. The overall sex ratio approximated 1:1 (χ2 = 0.02, P > 0.05), but the monthly sex ratios in 2004 showed significant differences and males were predominant in sizes larger than 80 mm CL. Reproductive activity, assessed using histology, a gonadosomatic index and percentage of ovigerous females, indicated that the mature females could be found in every month and that the major spawning occurred from May to September. The presence of re-developing/re-ripe ovaries by month and size-specific spawning time suggest that larger mature females (>60 mm CL) spawn at least three times a year while smaller new mature females spawn at least once a year. For females, the estimated sizes at 50% physiological and functional maturity were (mean ± SE) 56.46 ± 0.56 mm CL and 66.63 ± 1.07 mm CL. The estimated sizes at functional maturity were between 72 and 74 mm CL for males. The number of eggs per spawning event (brood size, BS) was related to CL by the equation Y BS = 2.4 × 10-3CL4.18 (r 2 = 0.902, n = 12). Female lobsters with CL ranging from 60 to 80 mm made the greatest contributions to egg production because of their high brood size and active reproductive activity. A minimum legal size should be established for the fishery to protect egg production potential of lobster population in the southeastern coastal waters off Taiwan.  相似文献

The sexuality, reproductive mode, and timing of reproduction of Pocillopora verrucosa from the Republic of Maldives, Indian Ocean, were assessed using serial histological sections. These showed that P. verrucosa is an annual simultaneous hermaphrodite, with gonads arranged in two opposing arcs of alternating testes and ovaries, six gonads in each arc. No planulae were observed in any dissection or histological analysis carried out, therefore making brooding unlikely. Broadcast spawning is inferred from the disappearance of mature gametes from samples collected between late March and April 1991. Mean oocyte size at spawning was 53.5 m and mean potential fecundity was 7300 ooctyes cm-2yr-1. The reproductive pattern of P. verrucosa in the Maldives is compared to that of the same species in different locations, the short breeding season in March to April occurring earlier in the Maldives than in Red Sea populations. The maximum mean oocyte diameter found in Maldivian specimens was much smaller than elsewhere. The year-to-year variation in numbers of oocytes/polyp within single colonies, and the variation between colonies within the population was significant (p<0.01). Therefore, it is possible that fecundity is not a good variable to use when monitoring stress on coral reefs unless larger numbers of estimates can be routinely made. Some colonies contained immature oocytes at spawning that were not released and continued to grow to approximately twice the size of the spawned oocytes that were presumed to be mature. These unspawned oocytes were oosorbing, and were characterised by the presence of zooxanthellae and large numbers of vacuoles in their cytoplasm. This gradual expansion and oosorption of unspawned oocytes has not been documented previously for corals.  相似文献

We investigated the growth and reproductive biology of the penaeid shrimp Trachysalambria curvirostris in Tokyo Bay, Japan, by monthly bottom-trawl surveys from May 2002 to December 2004. We also examined oogenesis in T. curvirostris by histological observation of the ovary. Females grew faster and attained a larger body size for age than males. The growth rate was high in summer and low in winter and was likely to be associated with seasonal changes in water temperature. The carapace length (CL) at which 50% of females contained vitellogenic oocytes was estimated to be 17.0 mm. The reproductive season extended from May to October. Young-of-the-year appeared in October and could be traced across the months on CL histograms to the following September or October, indicating a 1-year life cycle. This extended reproductive season, together with our observation of asynchronous development of oocytes in the ovary, suggests that multiple spawning by individual females may occur during the reproductive season. Postovulated oocytes were not found among the samples we collected during the daytime, suggesting that final oocyte maturation and spawning occur at night. Cortical crypts in the cytoplasm of the oocyte, considered to be a general feature of oogenesis in penaeid shrimps, were not found in T. curvirostris, even in oocytes undergoing germinal vesicle breakdown. This result implies that the cortical reaction after spawning of T. curvirostris may be different from that of other penaeid shrimps.  相似文献

This study investigates the reproductive strategy, an important component in the estimation of stock reproductive potential, in Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) herring (Clupea harengus), an iteroparous, extreme capital spawner, through the estimation of fecundity over a period of 3 years including two complete maturation cycles and three spawning seasons. NSS herring have an ‘optimistic’ strategy, with almost all adult herring caught in August being in the vitellogenic stage of ovary development, despite overwintering energy levels not being determined at this time. Fecundity in the summer, i.e., more than half a year before spawning in spring (February–April), was also much higher than could be supported by an individual’s concurrent energy levels. Consequently, fecundity was later reduced through atresia with the majority of this occurring before overwintering. The total reduction and the length of the time period in which the reduction took place appeared to vary between years. During the spawning season, atresia was mostly prevalent in small first-time spawners <180 g and several individuals aborted ovary development at this time. Final fecundity varied between years with a difference of up to 18% and was linked to annual variations in condition. In conclusion, this extensive field study has demonstrated that each individual herring can display a suite of size-specific reproductive tactics to fine-tune oocyte production in response to fluctuating levels of planktonic prey.  相似文献

Reproduction in the sea pen Pennatula phosphorea Linnaeus 1758 was investigated in a population located in southern Loch Linnhe, west Scotland. This was accomplished through analysis of trends in oocyte size-frequency distribution and fecundity over a 12-month period. Pennatula phosphorea is dioecious and the study population exhibited a sex ratio of 1:1. Oogenesis in female P. phosphorea is characterised by the maintenance of a large pool of small oocytes throughout the year of which a small proportion (<30%) mature synchronously and are broadcast-spawned during the summer months of July and/or August. Although spawning occurs annually, the duration of oogenesis exceeds 12 months. Initial oocyte generation is best described as ‘quasi-continuous’ as it may be suppressed during winter. The timing and periodicity of oogenesis and spawning may be related to seasonal environmental cues and it is proposed that annual spawning constitutes a brief and synchronous event. Fecundity is high in P. phosphorea, typically up to 50 oocytes per polyp and 40,000 oocytes per colony in medium to large colonies. Although mean polyp fecundity increased with colony size (axial rod length) there was no seasonal fluctuation in this measure of relative fecundity. Since only a small proportion of oocytes present are spawned each year, the present study advises caution when making inferences regarding the seasonal output of viable oocytes, especially on occasions where the definition of fecundity or the details of the oogenic cycle of a species are unclear. Pennatula phosphorea produces large oocytes (>500 μm), indicative of the production of lecithotrophic larvae; this may confer certain advantages with respect to larval longevity and survival.  相似文献

The sponge Tetilla sp. (Tetractinomorpha: Tetillidae) is a common species in the eastern Mediterranean. This sponge inhabits four different habitat types differing in wave impact and irradiance levels. Two of these habitats (a shallow cave and deep water) are characterized by relatively calm water, whereas the other two (shallow exposed site and tide pools) are in turbulent water with high energy flow. The present study examined the influence of physical (depth, illumination and water motion) and biotic factors on morphology, skeletal plasticity and reproductive traits among the four spatially separated populations. Sponges from tidal pools had significantly larger body volume than sponges from deep water and from shallow caves (ANOVA: tidal-deep P<0.0001; tidal-shallow caves P<0.05). Sponges from exposed habitats were significantly larger than deep-water sponges (ANOVA: P=0.01). In addition, individuals from tide pools and from the exposed habitat had a significantly higher proportion of structural silica than sponges from the calmer deep water and from the cave sites. Oxea spicules in sponges from the calm habitats were significantly shorter than in those from the tidal pools and the exposed habitats. The percentage of spicules out of a sponges dry weight in individuals transplanted from deep (calm) to shallow (turbulent) water significantly increased by 21.9±12.9%. The new spicule percentage did not differ significantly from that of sponges originally from shallow water. Oocyte diameter differed significantly between habitats. The maximal size of mature eggs was found in deep-water sponges in June (97±5 m). In the shallow habitats, a smaller maximal oocyte diameter was found in the cave, in May (56.5±3 m). Furthermore, oocyte density in shallow-water sponges was highest in May and decreased in June (with 88.2±9 and 19.3±9 oocytes mm–2, respectively). At the same time (June), oocyte density of deep-water sponges had just reached its maximum (155±33.7 oocytes mm–2). The difference in oocyte size and density between deep- and shallow-water individuals indicates an earlier gamete release in the shallow sponge population. The results suggest that plasticity in skeletal design of this sponge indicates a trade off between spicule production and investment in reproduction.Communicated by O. We estimated the broad-sense heritability of larval size in 20 full-sib families of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin, 1791) grown in laboratory culture in August and September 1991. The goal was to compare scallops with other bivalves which have been shown to have significant heritabilities for larval growth. Secondly, we estimated the lipid content of occytes from female parents, since this is hypothesized to affect larval growth and survival. Finally, we estimated the among-family variation in mortality from 4 to 21 d as a test of possible genetic variation for viability among larval scallops. Significant genetic variation (h2=1.10 to 1.24) was estimated for larval shell length at 4, 14, and 21 d. There was a significant correlation (r=0.66) between larval size at 4 d and lipid content of oocytes, but only when two females with high levels of lipid oocyte–1 were excluded as outliers. There was no correlation between larval size at 14 and 21 d and lipid content of oocytes. Mortality among families from 4 to 21 d was high (69 to 97%), and was significantly different among families. These results indicate that there is significant heritability for larval growth which is largely independent of the lipid content of the oocytes. A high heritability for larval growth may indicate that this trait is only weakly correlated with fitness.  相似文献

Samples of Benthosema pterotum (Alcock) were obtained from the Arabian Sea (1976, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984), off Mozambique (1978) and from the Bay of Bengal (1979). The sexual maturity stages are described. For females, the size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for assessing maturity. Mature and spawning fish were found in all seasons. Samples from November 1983 differed from all others in having very few mature females. A few apparently spent fish were observed in July to August 1979 and November 1983. Some females mature at 25 mm and males at 20 mm, whereas others can still be immature at 45 and 40 mm, respectively. Of the total number of stations, four had significantly more males than females, twelve significantly more females, and forty-seven displayed no difference in the sex ratios. The vertical migration of the mature and spawning fish did not differ significantly from that of other individuals. Batch fecundity ranged from ca. 200 to 3 000 eggs fish ranging from 27 to 52 mm, relative fecundity from ca. 2 000 to 7 000 eggs g-1 maternal dry weight. There are indications that B. pterotum spawns only once, but no firm conclusions could be drawn.  相似文献

A population of Cirratulus cirratus (O. F. Müller) was sampled from September 1966 to September 1968. The population is found intertidally in crevices at Cullercoats Bay, Northumberland (UK). Measurements of the sexual maturity and size of the animals have been made. The breeding season is not restricted, spawning occurs in the population asynchronously throughout the year. Ripe worms and worms that have just spawned are invariably present, but the majority of females are always at intermediate stages of oogenesis. Adult males, however, always contain active spermatozoa. Females, but not males, are devoid of coelomic gametes after spawning; a new generation of coelomic oocytes begin to accumulate in the coelom after 30 days. The growth of the coelomic oocytes is relatively slow, the coelomic phase of oocyte development takes between 1 and 2 years for completion. The coelomoducts which serve for the emission of the gametes are described. An interpretation of the female population structure based upon length and sexual maturity data suggests that most females survive to spawn 2 or 3 times, and some to spawn 4 or 5 times. They grow in length by about 2 cm in the period between successive spawnings. The reproduction of Cirratulus cirratus is compared with that of other annelid species breeding throughout the year, and this unusual mode of reproduction is discussed.  相似文献

Spawning pattern (assessed by seasonal changes in ovarian developmental stages) and type of fecundity (assessed by analysis of oocyte-size frequency distributions) of the round herring Etrumeus teres were studied in relation to ovarian growth and seasonal changes in the gonadosomatic (GSI), hepatosomatic (HSI) and liposomatic (LSI) index as well as the somatic condition of spawners (CS) in a spawning ground of southern Japan. Except for summer, mature and recently spawned ovaries occurred all year round. Oogonia and primary oocytes were present in all ovaries, and cortical alveoli stage (CA) oocytes occurred in all mature, hydrated and partially spent (PS) females (PS: females containing post-ovulatory follicles). Before hydration, a clutch of larger yolked oocytes, undergoing synchronous growth (range 0.7–1.1 mm), was present in mature ovaries which was completely separated from a more heterogeneous clutch of oogonia, primary and secondary oocytes (<0.150 mm) and oocytes in the CA stage (range 0.15–0.60 mm). As vitellogenesis progressed, the yolked clutch increased in size but the CA oocytes remained arrested. The latter entered into the secondary growth phase when hydration started in the advanced batch. Ovarian growth was isometric in all developmental stages, validating the use of GSI, which showed a consistent monthly evolution among years. Spawning stopped in summer (July and August) and peaked in winter and spring. HSI correlated positively with GSI on both a monthly mean basis (r = 0.76) and individual fish basis (liver weight explained 67–83% of the variability in ovary weight when females were grouped into 1-unit GSI intervals) suggesting a significant role of liver in vitellogenesis. LSI and CS also showed marked seasonal changes peaking from summer to middle autumn. Overall results suggest that E. teres is a multiple spawner with a group-synchronous ovarian development and indeterminate annual fecundity, with the three processes linked to an isometric growth of the ovary. We propose that such a reproductive pattern is an adaptation to produce batches of large pelagic eggs through a protracted spawning season.  相似文献

Temporal variations in protein, carbohydrate, and lipid levels were studied in a passive suspension feeder, the gorgonian Paramuricea clavata. The samples were collected every month for mature and immature colonies over a three-year period (1997–2000). The relationship between biochemical composition and reproductive output was examined on the basis of the 1998 and 1999 data. In female and male P. clavata colonies, the tissue displayed differences in lipid concentrations only in winter–spring, due to the high lipid levels attained by female colonies in this period. Immature colonies showed significant differences in lipid concentration only with respect to mature females in spring. There were clear seasonal trends in the lipid and carbohydrate levels in P. clavata, with maximum values in winter–spring [male lipid 212±75 SD μg mg−1 of organic matter (OM) and female lipid 274±103 SD μg mg−1 of OM; male and female carbohydrate 68±14 SD μg mg−1 of OM], coinciding with maximum food concentration/quality, and minimum values in summer–autumn (male and female lipid 155±57 SD μg mg−1 of OM; male and female carbohydrate 56±14 SD μg mg−1 of OM), coinciding with low food concentration/quality. The relationship between reproductive output and tissue concentrations of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins was not straightforward, although there was an evident overlap of the lipid accumulation and the gonadal development. The results of this study show that protein, carbohydrate, and lipid levels may provide a record of episodes in the ecological cycle bearing on the trophic aspects of the target species. The results indicate that information on seasonal biochemical levels may explain benthopelagic coupling processes, provided factors such as natural diet, feeding rates, reproduction, and growth are well understood.  相似文献
