The formicine ant Polyrhachis lama is a social parasite, exploiting its ponerine host ant species Diacamma sp. In most social parasitic associations, the parasitic species are closely related to their host species group, evolving directly from independent ancestors of the host species. However, in the Polyrhachis lama– Diacamma sp. association, the associated species belong to different ant subfamilies. Based on preliminary field surveys, we had presumed that P. lama might have given up its reproductive division of labour, i.e. workers would be able to produce males as well as workers and females parthenogenetically. In this study, this hypothesis was disproved: Polyrhachis lama workers cannot be fertilized and are only able to produce males. In the host–parasite association originating from nests possessing a P. lama queen, workers penetrate surrounding Diacamma sp. nests, carrying brood for rearing within these satellite nests. In this peculiar way, a single P. lama colony is able to exploit several Diacamma sp. colonies simultaneously. 相似文献

In social insects, the postembryonic development of individuals exhibits strong phenotypic plasticity in response to the environment, thus generating the caste system. Different from eusocial Hymenoptera, in which queens dominate reproduction and inhibit worker fertility, the primary reproductive caste in termites (kings and queens) can be replaced by neotenic reproductives derived from functionally sterile individuals. Feedback regulation of nestmate differentiation into reproductives has been suggested, but the sex specificity remains inconclusive. In the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, we tested the hypothesis that neotenic reproductives regulate worker-reproductive transition in a sex-specific manner. With this R. flavipes system, we demonstrate a sex-specific regulatory mechanism with both inhibitory and stimulatory functions. Neotenics inhibit workers of the same sex from differentiating into additional reproductives but stimulate workers of the opposite sex to undergo this transition. Furthermore, this process is not affected by the presence of soldiers. Our results highlight the reproductive plasticity of termites in response to social cues and provide insights into the regulation of reproductive division of labor in a hemimetabolous social insect. 相似文献

The potential for reproductive conflict among colony members exists in all social insect societies. For example, queens and
workers may be in conflict over the production of males within colonies. Kin selection theory predicts that in a colony headed
by a multiply-mated queen, worker reproduction is prevented by worker policing in the form of differential oophagy. However,
few studies have demonstrated that workers actually lay eggs within queenright colonies. The purpose of this study was to
determine if workers laid male eggs within unmanipulated queen-right colonies of the polyandrous social wasps Vespula maculifrons and V. squamosa. We focused our analysis on an unusual brood pattern within colonies, multiple egg cells. We were primarily interested in
determining if individuals reared in these irregular circumstances were queen or worker offspring. To address this question,
we genotyped 318 eggs from eight V. maculifrons and two V. squamosa colonies . No worker‑reproduction was detected in any of the queenright colonies; all of the eggs found in multiple egg cells were consistent
with being queen‑produced. However, the frequency of multiple egg cells differed among colonies, suggesting that queens vary
in the frequency of errors they make when laying eggs within cells. Finally, we suggest that workers may not be laying eggs
within queenright colonies and that worker reproduction may be controlled through mechanisms other than differential oophagy
in polyandrous Vespula wasps. 相似文献

Termite soldiers are the most specialized caste of social insects in terms of their morphology and function. Soldier development
requires increased juvenile hormone (JH) titer and the two molts via a presoldier stage. These molts are accompanied by dramatic
morphological changes, including the exaggeration and regression of certain organs. Soldiers of the most apical termitid subfamily
Nasutitermitinae possess not only a horn-like frontal tube, called the nasus, for the projection of defensive chemicals from
the frontal gland reservoir but also regressed mandibles. Although candidate genes regulating soldier mandibular growth were
reported in a relatively basal termite species, the regulatory mechanisms of mandibular regression remain unknown. To clarify
these mechanisms, we performed morphological and histological examinations of the mandibles during soldier differentiation
in Nasutitermes takasagoensis. Mandibular size reduced dramatically during soldier differentiation, and mandibular regression occurred just prior to the
presoldier molt. Spotted TUNEL signals were observed in regressing mandibles of presoldiers, suggesting that the regression
involved programmed cell death. Because soldiers of N. takasagoensis possess exaggerated organs (nasus and frontal gland), the present results suggest that JH-dependent regressive mechanisms
exist in the mandibles without interfering with the formation of the exaggerated organs. 相似文献

Senescence in wild populations was long considered negligible but current evidence suggests that it is widespread in natural populations of mammals and birds, affecting the survival and reproductive output of older individuals. In contrast, little is known about reproductive senescence in species with asymptotic growth that can keep increasing their reproductive output as they grow older and larger. Using a cross-sectional study, we tested age-related decline in fecundity and relative allocation to reproduction in five wild populations of an annual killifish, Nothobranchius furzeri (Cyprinodontiformes). We did not detect any decline in absolute female egg production over their short lifespan in the wild. Relative fecundity (egg production controlled for female body mass) tended to decrease with age. This effect was driven primarily by a single population that survived 17 weeks, almost twice as long as the median persistence of the other four study populations. There was no decrease in relative ovary mass while in males, relative testes mass actually increased with age. Intra-population variation in relative ovary mass increased in older females suggesting heterogeneity in individual trajectories of female reproductive allocation. Overall, we demonstrate that annual killifish do not experience significant age-related decline in reproductive functions during their very short lifespan in the wild despite the marked deterioration of gonad tissue detected in captivity. 相似文献

Studies of the selective advantages of divorce in socially monogamous bird species have unravelled extensive variation among
different lineages with diverse ecologies. We quantified the reproductive correlates of mate retention, mate loss and divorce
in a highly philopatric, colonially breeding biparental seabird, the Australasian gannet Morus serrator. Estimates of annual divorce rates varied between 40–43% for M. serrator and were high in comparison with both the closely related Morus bassanus and the range of divorce rates reported across monogamous avian breeding systems. Mate retention across seasons was related
to consistently higher reproductive success compared with mate replacement, while divorce per se contributed significantly
to lower reproductive output only in one of two breeding seasons. Prior reproductive success was not predictive of mate replacement
overall or divorce in particular. These patterns are in accordance with the musical chairs hypothesis of adaptive divorce
theory, which operates in systems characterised by asynchronous territorial establishment. 相似文献

Dispersers are expected to assess breeding habitat quality before settlement. Although cues reflecting habitat quality are
well studied, social cues have not been as well evaluated. In this paper, we studied breeding habitat selection during 3 years
in a natural population of blue tits, Cyanistes caeruleus, breeding in nest-boxes. Our aim was to investigate if this species used conspecific density and/or reproductive success
of con- and heterospecifics (i.e., social cues) in settlement decisions. The patterns observed were consistent with the idea
that juveniles, when dispersing from their natal patches, did not react to any of the cues that we tested. In contrast, breeders
that dispersed seemed to respond to both conspecific mean patch reproductive success (PRS) and breeding density of the settlement
patch in the year of dispersal, their response differing according to their own reproductive success. Indeed, failed breeders
moved to areas with high PRS and low density relative to source patches, while successful breeders behaved the opposite. The
comparison between juveniles and adults might be modulated by the limited time available to juveniles to gather information
on PRS and density at the end of the dispersing year. Adults lacking these time constraints, however, seemed to rely on these
conspecific cues although limited by their own quality. Additionally, breeders were more likely to be immigrants in patches
with relatively low breeding success and density the previous year, suggesting that settlement is influenced by multiple cues,
which may reveal information on different aspects of habitat and be available at different moments. Collectively, our results
support the importance of social cues for blue tits’ settlement. 相似文献

Cavia aperea and Galea musteloides) and domestic ( Cavia aperea f. porcellus) guinea pigs, which summarizes general rules for many group-living mammals. It is shown that social interactions have consequences
not only for the individuals' reproductive success but also for their degrees of stress and welfare. The way in which individuals
interact is controlled not only by the present environment but also by the previous social experiences which they have gathered
during their behavioral development. Furthermore, the study of ontogeny does not begin at birth, because prenatal social factors
acting on pregnant females can also affect the way in which the offspring will interact when adult. In addition, to understand
the genesis of interactions between domesticated animals implies knowledge of the behavioral and physiological changes which
occurred during the process of domestication. Finally, understanding the social interactions among individuals of the wild
ancestor of the domesticated form requires knowledge of how their behavior patterns were brought about by natural selection
during the process of social evolution. 相似文献

In social insects, biogenic amines are thought to play regulatory roles in the transition between reproductive states in females.
To determine the effect of dopamine on the reproductive development of workers in primitively eusocial societies, isolated
workers of the paper wasp Polistes chinensis were supplied with oral dopamine. Ovarian development was accelerated in dopamine-fed workers as compared to control workers
of the same age fed only sucrose solution. Oral dopamine increased brain levels of dopamine and its metabolite ( N-acetyldopamine). Brain levels of tyramine or octopamine were also increased by dopamine application in one of two colonies;
levels of the tyramine metabolite N-acetyltyramine were unchanged. These results indicate that dopamine plays a gonadotropic role in isolated workers in the
primitively eusocial wasp, similar to the gonadotropic role previously reported for juvenile hormone. This is the first study
to report effects of dopamine on ovarian development in workers of the paper wasp. 相似文献

The majority of studies on ecological speciation in animals have investigated the divergence caused by biotic factors like
divergent food sources or predatory regimes. Here, we examined a system where ecological speciation can clearly be ascribed
to abiotic environmental gradients of naturally occurring toxic hydrogen sulfide (H 2S). In southern Mexico, two genera of livebearing fishes (Poeciliidae: Poecilia and Gambusia) thrive in various watercourses with different concentrations of H 2S. Previous studies have revealed pronounced genetic differentiation between different locally adapted populations in one
species ( Poecilia mexicana), pointing towards incipient speciation. In the present study, we examined female reproductive life-history traits in two
species pairs: Gambusia sexradiata (from a nonsulfidic and a sulfidic habitat) and Gambusia eurystoma (sulfide-endemic), as well as P. mexicana (nonsulfidic and sulfidic) and Poecilia sulphuraria (sulfide endemic). We found convergent divergence of life-history traits in response to sulfide; most prominently, extremophile
poeciliids exhibit drastically increased offspring size coupled with reduced fecundity. Furthermore, within each genus, this
trend increased with increasing sulfide concentrations and was most pronounced in the two endemic sulfur-adapted species.
We discuss the adaptive significance of large offspring size in toxic environments and propose that divergent life-history
evolution may promote further ecological divergence through isolation by adaptation. 相似文献

In many social taxa, reproductively dominant individuals sometimes use aggression to secure and maintain reproductive status.
In the social insects, queen aggression towards subordinate individuals or workers has been documented and is predicted to
occur only in species with a small colony size and a low level of queen–worker dimorphism. We report queen aggression towards
reproductive workers in the ant species Aphaenogaster cockerelli, a species with a relatively large colony size and a high level of reproductive dimorphism. Through analysis of cuticular
hydrocarbon profiles, we show that queens are aggressive only to reproductively active workers. Non-reproductive workers treated
with a hydrocarbon typical for reproductives are attacked by workers but not by queens, which suggests different ways of recognition.
We provide possible explanations of why queen aggression is observed in this species. 相似文献

Social interactions may shape brain development. In primitively eusocial insects, the mushroom body (MB), an area of the brain associated with sensory integration and learning, is larger in queens than in workers. This may reflect a strategy of neural investment in queens or it may be a plastic response to social interactions in the nest. Here, we show that nest foundresses—the reproductive females who will become queens but are solitary until their first workers are born—have larger MBs than workers in the primitively eusocial sweat bee Augochlorella aurata. Whole brain size and optic lobe size do not differ between the two groups, but foundresses also have larger antennal lobes than workers. This shows that increased neural investment in MBs precedes social group formation. Larger MBs among foundresses may reflect the increased larval nutrition provisioned to future queens and the lack of social aggression from a dominant queen upon adult emergence. 相似文献

The sympatric neotropical termites Nasutitermes corniger and Nasutitermes ephratae are clearly distinguishable based on morphology, nest architecture, defensive secretion composition, and molecular markers.
However, given the extensive ecological, geographical, and behavioral overlap of these closely related species, the potential
for interbreeding may exist. To explore this possibility, heterospecific pairs were formed experimentally to examine courtship
and colony-establishment behaviors, and reproductive potential. Courtship and nest construction behavior occurred in heterospecific
pairs in a similar manner to that of conspecific pairs. Survival of pairs depended upon the species of the female partner.
N. ephratae females paired with N. corniger males produced as many offspring as conspecific pairs. N. corniger females mated to N. ephratae males, however, produced significantly fewer offspring at 60 days post-establishment than the reciprocal cross or conspecific
N. ephratae or N. corniger pairs. This was also the only pairing in which any aggression was observed. Heterospecific pairs and groups formed in mate
choice mesocosms, suggesting that species recognition between these two termites is not an important aspect of mate choice.
Overall, species mismatch tolerance and hybrid offspring viability are high. The present data, together with previous evidence
from defensive secretions and isozyme analysis, suggest that hybridization may periodically occur in nature, and that reproductive
barriers between these two species may be incomplete. Hybridization could provide a rare but important source of genetic diversity
and may ensure mating opportunities for the more abundant sex of alates in each species. 相似文献

The honeybee has been the most important insect species for study of social behavior. The recently released draft genomic
sequence for the bee will accelerate honeybee behavioral genetics. Although we lack sufficient tools to manipulate this genome
easily, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that influence natural variation in behavior have been identified and tested for their
effects on correlated behavioral traits. We review what is known about the genetics and physiology of two behavioral traits
in honeybees, foraging specialization (pollen versus nectar), and defensive behavior, and present evidence that map-based
cloning of genes is more feasible in the bee than in other metazoans. We also present bioinformatic analyses of candidate
genes within QTL confidence intervals (CIs). The high recombination rate of the bee made it possible to narrow the search
to regions containing only 17–61 predicted peptides for each QTL, although CIs covered large genetic distances. Knowledge
of correlated behavioral traits, comparative bioinformatics, and expression assays facilitated evaluation of candidate genes.
An overrepresentation of genes involved in ovarian development and insulin-like signaling components within pollen foraging
QTL regions suggests that an ancestral reproductive gene network was co-opted during the evolution of foraging specialization.
The major QTL influencing defensive/aggressive behavior contains orthologs of genes involved in central nervous system activity
and neurogenesis. Candidates at the other two defensive-behavior QTLs include modulators of sensory signaling ( Am5HT
7
serotonin receptor, AmArr4 arrestin, and GABA-B-R1 receptor). These studies are the first step in linking natural variation in honeybee social behavior
to the identification of underlying genes. 相似文献

In the obligate mutualism between figs ( Ficus) and their specific pollinators (Chalcidoidea, Agaonidae), each species of fig wasp typically reproduces in figs of a single
host species. Host specificity is maintained largely because pollinators are attracted to tree-specific volatiles released
from their host figs, but whether the wasps can reproduce if they enter figs of non-host species is unclear. We investigated
the reproductive success of Ceratosolen emarginatus (associated with Ficus auriculata) and Ceratosolen sp. (associated with F. hainanensis) in atypical hosts by experimentally introducing foundresses into host and non-host figs. F. auriculata figs entered by Ceratosolen sp. were more likely to abort than if entered by C. emarginatus, but abortion of F. hainanensis figs was not affected by pollinator species. Single C. emarginatus foundresses produced more but smaller offspring in F. hainanensis than in their normal host. Conversely Ceratosolen sp. produced fewer but larger offspring in F. auriculata than in their normal host, probably as a result of having longer to develop. Mean style length differences, relative to the
lengths of the wasps’ ovipositors, may have dictated the number of offspring produced, with oviposition made easier by the
shorter styles in F. hainanensis figs. Our results imply that, in addition to morphological constraints and tree-specific volatiles, reduced reproductive
success in atypical hosts can be another factor maintaining host specificity, but for other species only behavioural changes
are required for host switching to occur. 相似文献

Evolution of caste is a central issue in the biology of social insects. Comparative studies on their morphology so far suggest
the following three patterns: (1) a positive correlation between queen–worker size dimorphism and the divergence in reproductive
ability between castes, (2) a negative correlation among workers between morphological diversity and reproductive ability,
and (3) a positive correlation between queen–worker body shape difference and the diversity in worker morphology. We conducted
morphological comparisons between castes in Pachycondyla luteipes, workers of which are monomorphic and lack their reproductive ability. Although the size distribution broadly overlapped,
mean head width, head length, and scape length were significantly different between queens and workers. Conversely, in eye
length, petiole width, and Weber’s length, the size differences were reversed. The allometries (head length/head width, scape
length/head width, and Weber’s length/head width) were also significantly different between queens and workers. Morphological
examinations showed that the body shape was different between queens and workers, and the head part of workers was disproportionately
larger than that of queens. This pattern of queen–worker dimorphism is novel in ants with monomorphic workers and a clear
exception to the last pattern. This study suggests that it is possible that the loss of individual-level selection, the lack
of reproductive ability, influences morphological modification in ants. 相似文献

In social insects, it is assumed that signals of the queen inform nestmates about her reproductive status. Thus, workers forego
their own reproduction if the queen signals high fertility. In hemimetabolous termites, little is known about reproductive
inhibition, but evidence exists for a royal-pair control. Workers of lower termites exhibit a high developmental flexibility
and are potentially able to become reproductives, but the presence of a fertile reproductive restrains them from reaching
sexual maturity. The nature of this control, however, remains unknown. Here, we report on qualitative differences in cuticular
hydrocarbon profiles between queens and workers of the basal drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. Queens were characterized by a shift to long-chained and branched hydrocarbons. Most remarkably, similar chemical patterns
are regarded as fertility cues of reproductives in social Hymenoptera. This might suggest that both groups of social insects
convergently evolved similar chemical signatures. The present study provides deeper insights into how termites might have
socially exploited these signatures from sexual communication in their cockroach-like ancestor.

During reproductive migration the electroreceptive African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Siluriformes), preys mainly on a weakly electric fish, the bulldog Marcusenius macrolepidotus (Mormyridae; Merron 1993). This is puzzling because the electric organ discharges of known Marcusenius species are pulses of a duration (<1 ms) too short for being detected by the catfishes' low-frequency electroreceptive system
(optimum sensitivity, 10–30 Hz; Peters and Bretschneider 1981). On the recent discovery that M. macrolepidotus males emit discharges lasting approximately ten times longer than those of females (Kramer 1997a) we determined behavioral
thresholds for discharges of both sexes, using synthetic playbacks of field-recorded discharges. C. gariepinus detected M. macrolepidotus male discharges down to a field gradient of 103 μV peak-peak/cm and up to a distance of 1.5 m at natural field conditions. In contrast, thresholds for female discharges were not reached
with our setup, and we presume the bulldogs eaten by catfish are predominantly male.
