Information on how cosolvents affect sorption of ionizable chemicals by soils with heterogeneous variable-charge mineral surface domains is sparse. In this study, the effect of soil-solution pH in methanol/water solutions on sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by variable-charge soils with a range of hydrophilic (f Hphilic) and hydrophobic (f Hphobic) sorption domains was characterized. PCP sorption by 10 variable-charge soils was measured as a function of apparent pH (pH app) and methanol volume fraction (fc8) decreased log-linearly with increasing fc, but the slope of the relationship was less for anionic PCP. The empirical solvent-sorbent interaction term for anionic PCP (alpha i) was inversely correlated with f Hphilic (r2=0.82), which is consistent with methanol-induced increases in anion exchange. For neutral PCP, the empirical term (alpha n) was positively correlated with f Hphobic (r2=0.84), supporting methanol-induced increases in solution and sorbent hydrophobicity. Sorption of PCP by two soils with varying f Hphilic in the pH app range from 3 to 8 at fc相似文献

Sorption of 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) on four typical Greek agricultural soils, with distinct texture, organic matter content and cation exchange capacities, was compared by using sorption isotherms and the parameters calculated from the fitted Freundlich equations. The sorption process of 3,4-DCA to the soil was completed within 48–72 h. The 3,4-DCA sorption on all soils was well described by the Freundlich equation and all sorption isotherms were of the L-type. The sandy clay loam soil with the highest organic matter content and a slightly acidic pH was the most sorptive, whereas the two other soil types, a high organic matter and neutral pH clay and a low organic matter and acidic loam, had an intermediate sorption capacity. A typical calcareous soil with low organic matter had the lowest sorption capacity which was only slightly higher than that of river sand. The 3,4-DCA sorption correlated best to soil organic matter content and not to clay content or cation exchange capacity, indicating the primary role of organic matter. The distribution coefficient (K d) decreased with increasing initial 3,4-DCA concentration and the reduction was most pronounced with the highly sorptive sandy clay loam soil, suggesting that the available sorption sites of the soils are not unlimited. Liming of the two acidic soils (the sandy clay loam and the loam) raised their pH (from 6.2 and 5.3, respectively) to 7.8 and reduced their sorption capacity by about 50 %, indicating that soil pH may be the second in importance factor (after organic matter) determining 3,4-DCA sorption.  相似文献

Sorption of naphthalene and phenanthrene by soil humic acids   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
Humic acids are a major fraction of soil organic matter (SOM), and sorption of hydrophobic organic chemicals by humic acids influences their behavior and fate in soil. A clear understanding of the sorption of organic chemicals by humic acids will help to determine their sorptive mechanisms in SOM and soil. In this paper, we determined the sorption of two hydrophobic organic compounds, naphthalene and phenanthrene by six pedogenetically related humic acids. These humic acids were extracted from different depths of a single soil profile and characterized by solid-state CP/MAS 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Aromaticity of the humic acids increased with soil depth. Similarly, atomic ratios of C/H and C/O also increased with depth (from organic to mineral horizons). All isotherms were nonlinear. Freundlich exponents (N) ranged from 0.87 to 0.95 for naphthalene and from 0.86 to 0.92 for phenanthrene. The N values of phenanthrene were consistently lower than naphthalene for a given humic acid. For both compounds, N values decreased with increasing aromaticity of the humic acids, such an inverse relationship was never reported before. These results support the dual-mode sorption model where partitioning occurs in both expanded (flexible) and condensed (rigid) domains while nonlinear sorption only in condensed domains of SOM. Sorption in the condensed domains may be a cause for slow desorption, and reduced availability and toxicity with aging.  相似文献

Field burning of crop residues incorporates resulting chars into soil and may thus influence the environmental fate of pesticides in the soil. This study evaluated the influence of pH on the sorption of diuron, bromoxynil, and ametryne by a soil in the presence and absence of a wheat residue-derived char. The sorption was measured at pHs approximately 3.0 and approximately 7.0. Wheat char was found to be a highly effective sorbent for the pesticides, and its presence (1% by weight) in soil contributed >70% to the pesticide sorption (with one exception). The sorption of diuron was not influenced by pH, due to its electroneutrality. Bromoxynil becomes dissociated at high pHs to form anionic species. Its sorption by soil and wheat char was lower at pH approximately 7.0 than at pH approximately 3.0, probably due to reduced partition of the anionic species of bromoxynil into soil organic matter and its weak interaction with the carbon surface of the char. Ametryne in its molecular form at pH approximately 7.0 was sorbed by char-amended soil via partitioning into soil organic matter and interaction with the carbon surface of the char. Protonated ametryne at pH approximately 3.0 was substantially sorbed by soil primarily via electrostatic forces. Sorption of protonated ametryne by wheat char was also significant, likely due not only to the interaction with the carbon surface but also to interactions with hydrated silica and surface functional groups of the char. Sorption of ametryne by char-amended soil at pH approximately 3.0 was thus influenced by both the soil and the char. Environmental conditions may thus significantly influence the sorption and behavior of pesticides in agricultural soils containing crop residue-derived chars.  相似文献

The sorptive behavior of the experimental herbicide quinmerac (7-chloro-3-methyl-quinoline-8-carboxylic acid) was investigated in soils of different organic carbon content. Distribution coefficients are low (Kd = 0.03 - 12 mL g−1) and are mainly determined by the soil organic carbon content. The adsorption mechanism operating in neutral to slightly acid agricultural soils is supposed to be cation bridging with the anionic form of quinmerac. Under acid conditions (pH 5.2) the predominating sorption mechanism is hydrophobic interaction. Therefore soil pH and cationic composition are also major factors determining the sorptive capacity of soils for quinmerac.

Adsorption kinetics, equilibrium adsorption and desorption isotherms were determined in batch experiments. Sorption kinetics were investigated at various times from 15 min to 96 hours. A two-step sorption behavior with time was found for the anionic form indicating two types of sorption mechanisms or sorption sites. Equilibrium for the first type was reached at a time-scale of minutes and for the second type after 24 hours. Adsorption isotherms were determined for two soil/solution ratios 1/5 and 1/3. Alteration of the adsorbent concentration exerted a strong influence on the adsorption isotherms. An increase of sorption was found with increasing adsorbent concentration. Under natural soil conditions sorption is therefore expected to be higher compared to the batch experiments. Desorption isotherms were obtained using the consecutive desorption method. Desorption hysteresis was not observed which indicates weak interactions. Implications of the results for the movement of quinmerac under field conditions and for models describing transport are discussed.  相似文献

Sorption of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dipropyl phthalate (DPP) to two soil materials that vary in organic matter content was investigated using miscible displacement experiments under saturated flow conditions. Generated breakthrough curves (BTCs) were inversely simulated using linear, equilibrium sorption (LE), nonlinear, equilibrium sorption (NL), linear, first-order nonequilibrium sorption (LFO), linear, radial diffusion (LRD), and nonlinear, first-order nonequilibrium sorption (NFO) models. The Akaike information criterion was utilized to determine the preferred model. The LE model could not adequately describe phthalate ester (PE) BTCs in higher organic matter soil or for more hydrophobic PEs. The LFO and LRD models adequately described the BTCs but a slight improvement in curve-fitting was gained in some cases when the NFO model was used. However, none of the models could properly describe the desorptive tail of DPP for the high organic matter soil. Transport of DPP through this soil was adequately predicted when degradation or sorption hysteresis was considered. Using the optimized parameter values along with values reported by others it was shown that the organic carbon distribution coefficient (K(oc)) of PEs correlates well with the octanol/water partition coefficient (K(ow)). Also, a strong relationship was found between the first-order sorption rate coefficient normalized to injection pulse size and compound residence time. A similar trend of timescale dependence was found for the rate parameter in the radial diffusion model. Results also revealed that the fraction of instantaneous sorption sites is dependent on K(ow) and appears to decrease with the increase in the sorption rate parameter.  相似文献

The herbicide imazaquin has both an acid and a basic ionizable groups, and its sorption depends upon the pH, the electric potential (psi0), and the oxide and the organic carbon (OC) contents of the soil. Sorption and extraction experiments using 14C-imazaquin were performed in surface and subsurface samples of two acric oxisols (an anionic "rhodic" acrudox and an anionic "xanthic" acrudox) and one non-acric alfisol (a rhodic kandiudalf), treated at four different pH values. Imazaquin showed low to moderate sorption to the soils. Sorption decreased and aqueous extraction increased as pH increased. Up to pH 5.8, sorption was higher in subsurface than in surface layers of the acric soils, due to the positive balance of charges resulted from the high Fe and Al oxide and the low OC contents. It favored electrostatic interactions with anionic molecules of imazaquin. For the subsurface samples of these highly weathered soils, where psi0 was positive and OC was low, it was not possible to predict sorption just by considering imazaquin speciation and its hydrophobic partition to the organic domains of the soil. Moreover, if Koc measured for thesurface samples were assumed to represent the whole profile in predictive models for leaching potential, then it would result in underestimation of sorption potential in subsurface, and consequently result in overestimation of the leaching potential.  相似文献

The sorption behaviour of a new wheat hybridising agent (clofencet, 2-4-(chlorophenyl)-3-ethyl-2,5-dihydro-5-oxopyridazine-4-carboxylic acid) was investigated in batch equilibrium experiments and compared to that of two other organic acids (2,4-D and salicylic acid). Sorption coefficients Kd for the three compounds were determined in 18 Cambisols and Ferralsols. Kd values for clofencet were 0.3-9.4 l/kg for Cambisols and 2.1-68 l/kg for Ferralsols. Sorption of clofencet was strongly related statistically to that of salicylic acid. Sorption of clofencet and salicylic acid decreased exponentially with increasing solution pH in Cambisols whereas a bell-shaped curve was obtained for the sorption of salicylic acid in Ferralsols. Sorption of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) was not statistically related to the pH of the different soils. Positively charged oxide surfaces were shown to play a significant role in the sorption of clofencet and salicylic acid. The use of simple correlation and multiple linear regressions suggested that the main sorption mechanisms of clofencet in soils were likely to be ligand exchange on oxide surfaces and, to a lesser extent, cation bridging. Differences in the sorption behaviour of clofencet/salicylic acid and 2,4-D might be attributed to the possibility of the two former compounds forming bidentate complexes with metals.  相似文献

Evaluation of the potential environmental risk posed by metals depends to a great extent on modeling the fate and mobility of metals with soil-solution partitioning coefficients (Kd). However, the effect of biological cycling on metal partitioning is rarely considered in standard risk assessments. We determined soil-solution partitioning coefficients for 5 metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Co and Ni) at 46 forested sites that border the Precambrian Shield in central Ontario, where soil pHaq varied from 3.9 to 8.1. Foliage from the dominant tree species and forest floor samples were also collected from each site to compare their metal levels with Kd predictions. Analogous to other studies, log Kd values for all metals were predicted by empirical linear regression with soil pH (r2=0.66-0.72), demonstrating that metal partitioning between soil and soil solution can be reliably predicted for relatively unpolluted forest mineral soils by soil pH. In contrast, whereas the so-called bioavailable water-soluble metal fraction could be predicted from soil pH, metal concentrations in foliage and the forest floor at each site were not consistently related to pH. Risk assessment of metals should take into account the role of biota in metal cycling and partitioning in forests, particularly if metal bio-accumulation and chronic toxicity in the food chain, rather than metal mobility in soils, are of primary concern.  相似文献

In situ chemical oxidation is a commonly applied soil and groundwater remediation technology, but can have significant effects on soil properties, which in turn might affect fate and transport of organic contaminants. In this study, it was found that oxidation treatment resulted mainly in breakdown of soil organic matter (SOM) components. Sorption of naphthalene and phenanthrene to the original soils and the KMnO4-treated soils was linear, indicating that hydrophobic partitioning to SOM was the predominant mechanism for sorption. Desorption from the original and treated soils was highly resistant, and was well modeled with a biphasic desorption model. Desorption of residual naphthalene after treating naphthalene-contaminated soils with different doses of KMnO4 also followed the biphasic desorption model very well. It appears that neither changes of soil properties caused by chemical oxidation nor direct chemical oxidation of contaminated soils had a noticeable effect on the nature of PAH-SOM interactions.  相似文献

We report on sorption isotherm of phenanthrene (Phe) for river floodplain soil associated with carbonaceous materials, with particular attention being devoted to the natural loading of Phe. Our sorption experiments with original soil samples, size, and density sub-fractions showed that the light fraction had the highest sorption capacity comparable to low rank coals. In addition, the light fraction contributed most for the sorption of Phe in total soil samples. Koc values for all fractions were in the same range, thus indicating that coal and coal-derived particles in all samples are responsible for the enhanced sorption for Phe. Sorption was strongly nonlinear and the combined partitioning and pore-filling model gave a better fit than the Freundlich sorption model. In addition, the spiked PAHs did not show the same behavior as the naturally aged ones, therefore the accessibility of indigenous background organic contaminants was reduced when coal and coal-derived particles are associated with the soils.  相似文献

The sorption and desorption of heterocyclic organic compounds in a complex multisolute system to a natural clayey till was investigated. The composition of the solutes reflect a simplified composition of an aqueous phase in contact with coal tar. Sorption was studied for two ratios (s:l) of clayey till (solid) to aqueous phase (liquid). The effect of the complex mixture of solutes on sorption of the four heterocyclic compounds: benzofuran, dibenzofuran, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene is evaluated by comparison with their sorption measured in single-solute systems. Sorption of the four compounds is affected by the complex mixture, with sorption decreases for all four compounds at high s:l ratio indicating competitive sorption. The effect on sorption of the individual compounds is not related to solubility or hydrophobicity of the compounds. Freundlich-type isotherms are observed for all compounds in the high s:l-ratio experiments, but for the most hydrophobic compounds isotherms are close to linear. The sorption of N-compounds and benzofuran is apparently influenced by cation exchange and dipole–dipole attraction to clay minerals. At high concentrations a dramatic increase in the sorption of the most strongly sorbing compounds is observed in the low s:l-ratio experiment. The dramatic increase in sorption appears to be a result of multimolecular layer sorption or condensation on surfaces in the clayey till at high surface density of organic compounds, and the data are fitted by BET (Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller) type 2 isotherms. The increase may or may not be induced by the presence of N-heterocyclic compounds sorbed by cation exchange and dipole–dipole attraction. The desorption of the compounds was studied for the low s:l ratio where multimolecular layer formation apparently had occurred. Partially irreversible sorption, hysteric Langmuir type desorption with isotherms of very high Kl coefficient, or behaviour reflecting dissolution of a condensed phase is observed.  相似文献

Carbendazim sorption-desorption in Vietnamese soils   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Four Vietnamese soils (denoted AG, CT, ST and TG) which differed with respect to pH (pH 2.9-5.4), clay (17-50%) and organic matter (0.3-9.8%) content, were selected for sorption and desorption studies of carbendazim using the batch equilibration technique. Sorption increased with increasing organic carbon (OC) and clay content. Kd values for carbendazim sorption on AG, CT, ST, TG soils at initial concentration of 20 microg/g were 12.5, 127, 8.1 and 9.6 ml/g, respectively. The OC partition coefficients (Koc) for AG, CT, ST and TG were 1140, 1300, 2700 and 960 ml/g, respectively. Carbendazim was strongly sorbed and the binding was less reversible in the acid sulfate soil (CT), than in the other soils. The CT soil had both the highest OC content (9.8%) and the highest clay content (49.8%). The influence of pH on carbendazim sorption was studied in the ST and CT soils. Sorption of carbendazim by the sandy ST soil (OC 0.3%; clay content 26.3%) increased as the pH decreased, while sorption of carbendazim by the CT soil decreased as pH decreased.  相似文献

This is the second of a two-part series describing the sorption kinetics of hydrophobic organic chemicals. Part I “The Use of First-Order Kinetic Multi-Compartment Models” is published in issue 1 of this journal, pp. 21–28. Sorption kinetics of chlorinated benzenes from a natural lake sediment have been investigated in gas-purge desorption experiments. Biphasic desorption curves, with an initial “fast” part and a subsequent “slow” part, were found for all tested chlorobenzenes. From these results first-order sorption uptake and desorption rate constants were calculated with a two-sediment compartment model, which is presented in the first paper. In three sets of experiments the sorption uptake period and sediment/water ratio were varied. Rate constants are not influenced by these experimental conditions, which supports the partitioning concept for the sorption of hydrophobic organic chemicals in sediments.  相似文献

Abstract

The adsorption isotherms of fenuron (l, l‐dimethyl‐3‐phenylurea) on three smectites (SWy and SAz montmorillonites and SH hectorite) differing in their layer charge (SH<SWy<SAz) and saturated with several inorganic and organic cations were determined. The isotherms and sorption parameters from Freundlich equation indicate low adsorptivity on inorganic clays, but medium sorption in organoclays (OCls). Fenuron adsorption on homoionic smectites increases with decreasing layer charge and hydratation power of the inorganic exchangeable cation (except Fe3+), indicating that fenuron adsorbs as neutral molecule on uncharged siloxane surface by hydrophobic bonding, with some contribution of polar bond (fenuron C=O group and water associated to exchangeable cation). In the case of Fe3+‐saturated smectite fenuron protonation, provided by the interlayer acidic environment, promotes further sorption of fenuron as cationic form. The sorption on organoclays is enhanced via hydrophobic interaction with organocations, which is favoured for high layer charge and basal spacing and organocation saturation close to CEC. Quaternary alkylamonium is more efficient in high layer charge smectite, whereas primary alkylammonium is more efficient in medium charge smectite. The low values of the maximum sorption obtained with homoionic inorganic and organic smectites (100 and 5000 μmol/Kg) represent one fenuron molecule for each 2000–200 exchange sites and indicate that fenuron sorption is mainly associated to the outer exchange sites. This low adsorptivity of fenuron, as consequence of its high water affinity (high water solubility) would suggest high mobility of fenuron in natural soil and water systems.  相似文献

Sorption of ametryn and imazethapyr in 25 soils from Pakistan and Australia was investigated using the batch method. The soils varied widely in their intrinsic capacities to sorb these herbicides as shown by the sorption coefficients, Kd, which ranged from 0.59 to 47.6 for ametryn and 0.02 to 6.94 for imazethapyr. Generally the alkaline soils of Pakistan had much lower Kd values of both herbicides than the soils of Australia. Both soil pH and soil organic carbon (SOC) were correlated significantly with the sorption of ametryn, whereas only soil pH was strongly correlated with imazethapyr sorption. No correlation was found between Kd values of the herbicides and the clay contents of the soils. Multiple regression analysis showed that Kd values were better correlated (r2=0.94 and 0.89 for ametryn and imazethapyr, respectively) if SOC and pH were simultaneously taken into account. The study indicated that sorption of these herbicides in the alkaline soils of Pakistan was low and consequently there is considerable risk of groundwater contamination.  相似文献

Study of sorption kinetics of some ionic liquids on different soil types   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the present contribution sorption kinetics experiments under static conditions were utilized in three selected ionic liquids cations (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides) study with five type of soil, differing in total organic carbon (TOC) content. The experimental results indicate the sorption capacity growth with increase in TOC content and hydrophobicity of ionic liquid cation. The obtained kinetic sorption parameters as well as distribution coefficients (Kd) were used to estimate the sorption properties of the soil types towards the ionic liquids in question. The Gibbs free energy values indicate that ionic liquid cations sorption on soils could be generally considered as a physical adsorption with exothermic effect. But the values of −dG for studied cations sorption on soil with very high of TOC content in soil (45%) may testify to nature of chemical adsorption. Sorption of the analyzed compounds occurs probably by means of hydrogen bonds, electrostatic and π  π interaction with the organic matter and the clay minerals of the soils.  相似文献
