Summary The degree to which lekking and non-lekking male manakins select display sites in order to maximise proximity to females was examined by contrasting movements of females with male dispersion. Data on female visiting patterns, male courtship disruption, and mating skew were also collected over three successive breeding seasons. For the five lek-breeding species, female home-ranges were 3–7 times larger than those of adult males. Female movements were concentrated around leks, fruiting places and stream bathing sites. None of the females monitored by radio-tracking expanded her normal range in order to visit males on leks. On the contrary, feeding bouts of females frequently preceded a visit to potential mates at neighboring leks. Despite small sample sizes, significant correlations were found between female home-range size and male clustering (distances between neighboring leks and distances between neighboring males), as predicted by the female choice model and the hotspot model. Adult and immature male home-range sizes were not significantly correlated with male dispersion or female ranges. On the other hand, males and females of the only non-lekking species exhibited similar use of space and home-range size. Male settlement at sites with high levels of female traffic showed that the hotspot model is adequate to explain differences in male dispersion among sympatric lekking species. Comparisons with other studies suggest that apparent female choice could be overidden by past and present male-male interactions or female mate-comparison tactics. In fact, both the hotspot model and the attractiveness hypothesis appear to shape male dispersion on leks: males appear to settle under hotspot conditions with despotic rules generated through bias in female choice or male-male interference. It is proposed that the evolution of leks is ecologically motivated by the spatio-temporal distribution of trophic resources, initially leading to a dispersed male-advertisement polygyny. Following this, a foraging ecology that promotes high mobility by females and the magnetic effect of mating skew in particular males may have favored clustering on exploded leks. Later, the development of male-male interference and the increasing female home-range size could have led to the evolution of classical leks. 相似文献

Summary We studied 13 ruff leks in a small region on the island of Gotland (Sweden) to investigate the effect of lek size on the costs and benefits of lekking for individual males. Male ruffs occur in two behaviourally and morphologically distinct forms, independents (residents plus marginals) and satellites, whose costs and benefits we have assessed separately. These ruff leks had from 1–10 resident (territory-holding) males and were visited daily by satellites, marginals and females from 5–25 May, when most copulations occurred. We used the average number of independent males, counted during censuses taken every 5 min during 2-h observation periods at each lek, as an index of mean lek size. Per independent male, the numbers of both satellites and females increased significantly with mean lek size. Female arrival rate and attendance (total female-minutes) also increased significantly with mean lek size as did the average per capita rate of mating success for resident males (that of satellites was not quite significant). Thus, the dispersion of both of these male categories did not appear to fit an ideal free distribution with respect to mating success. In addition, the number of independent-independent fights per independent and the rate of satellite-resident dyad formation per resident increased significantly with mean lek size. These results suggest that ruffs on larger leks enjoy higher mating success than those on smaller leks but also that costs increase with lek size. We suggest that independent males distribute themselves so as to maximize their own net benefits and that this factor can account for both the occurrence of ruff leks and the variation in their size.

Summary Sex pheromone communication in the nine European species of small ermine moths (Yponomeuta) is reviewed in regard to the potential role of pheromones in the speciation process. Six of the nine species studied (viz.,Y. evonymellus, Y. cagnagellus, Y. padellus, Y. irrorellus, Y. plumbellus, andY. vigintipunctatus) use a mixture of (E)-11-and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate in different ratios as primary pheromone components, with combinations of tetradecyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate and the corresponding alcohols of the acetates as additional pheromone components. Analysis of (Z)- to (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate ratios produced by individual females of these species demonstrated significant variation among females of all species. However, the ranges of ratios produced byY. cagnagellus, Y. irrorellus, andY. plumbellus, sharing the same host-plant species, spindle tree, did not overlap. Niche separation of all six species mentioned required consideration of at least one additional pheromone component or of temporal aspects. The remaining three species,i.e. Y. malinellus, Y. mahalebellus andY. rorellus, have pheromones that differ qualitatively.Biosynthetic routes to the pheromone components identified are proposed on the basis of fatty acid pheromone precursors found in the pheromone glands. A phylogenetic tree for the genus is constructed based on allozyme frequency data and changes in pheromone composition are superimposed on this tree. We suggest that the ancestral ermine moth pheromone is a mixture of (Z)-11- and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and the corresponding alcohols, and a scenario of how present-day patterns evolved is outlined. The pheromone differences among the three species using spindle tree as their host-plant might have evolved throughreproductive character displacement upon secondary contact between populations that had already diverged genetically in allopatry. Pheromone differences within the so-calledpadellus-complex (includingY. cagnagellus, Y. mahalebellus, Y. malinellus, Y. padellus, andY. rorellus) in which species might have originated sympatrically, may have evolved byreinforcing selection as these species still hybridise and produce viable offspring when confined in cages. The role of pheromones in reproductive isolation amongYponomeuta species is emphasised by (1) the function of pheromone components of some of the species as behavioural antagonists to other species, (2) the cross-attraction under experimental conditions between allochronic species with similar pheromones, and (3) the formation of hybrids in the laboratory between species that are isolated in nature by pheromone differences. 相似文献

Anchovy feeding activity (based on samples collected around the South African coast between 1986 and 1988) seems to peak twice daily, with the major peak between 17:00 and 19:00 hrs. Mean daily consumption in the field was estimated at 3.45% of body wt d-1. Since the various food types available to anchovy differ in their caloric values, this figure might be expected to vary according to the type of diet available to the fish. To obtain a diet energetically equivalent to that measured in the field anchovy feeding exclusively on phytoplankton would need to consume the equivalent of 5.8% of their body wt d-1 and those feeding on zooplankton 3.5 to 4.5% of the body wt, while fish feeding on their own eggs would require only 2.5% of their body wt daily. Feeding on eggs at peak spawning on the spawning grounds —where there is limited alternative food (i.e., zooplankton) available — seems adequate to support reproduction. In selection at the population level, cannibalistic fish benefit from homeostatic self-regulation. 相似文献

Summary Spring territories of 17 adult capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) cocks were 10–79 ha in extent; they varied inversely in size with the relative proportion of mature forest within them. The number of resident cocks at leks increased with the amount of mature forest within a 1 km radius of each lek center. Leks in two areas (n=46) were regularly spaced with mean distances to nearest neighbors of 1.98 and 2.07 km, corresponding to the territorial space occupied by adult cocks of adjoining leks. In one area with intensive logging, interlek distance increased with decreasing amounts of mature forest between them. Spring home ranges of 18 adult females averaged 51.3 ha±8.2 SE. The spatial relationships did not fit recent models of interlek spacing based on female spacing behavior. Instead, the results suggested that spacing of leks may be related to the territorial requirements of males. 相似文献

To showcase the importance of genotype × environment interactions and the presence of predation risk in the experimental assessment
of boldness in fish, we investigated boldness in terms of feeding behavior and refuge use in two genetically different populations
of juvenile carp (Cyprinus carpio) in two replicated experimental conditions in ponds and laboratory tanks. The populations were expected to exhibit genetic
differences in boldness due to differential evolutionary adaptation to low-predation-risk pond aquaculture conditions. Boldness
was measured in variants of open-field trials with and without implementation of additional predation risk-stimuli by angling
on feeding spots. Without explicit implementation of risk, genotypes adapted to low-risk environments, i.e., domesticated
mirror carp behaved consistently bolder than their less domesticated scaled conspecifics in the pond environment, but not
in the laboratory environment. When we implemented artificial risk-stimuli by angling on previously safe feeding spots, boldness
differences among genotypes also emerged in the laboratory environment, indicating strong genotype × environment effects on
boldness behavior of carp. The expected genetic basis of boldness differences among genotypes was clearly supported in the
pond environment, while the laboratory study revealed these patterns only under inclusion of explicit risk-stimuli. Our study
thus underscores that boldness may involve both a basal component that is expressed independently of obvious predation risk
(e.g., in open fields) and a component revealed in relation to explicit predation risk, and both dimensions may respond differently

Summary The importance of active mate choice as a component of sexual selection remains controversial, despite recent studies identifying traits that correlate with male mating success. We analyzed the sampling sequences of individual female Guianan cock-of-the-rock, providing quantitative documentation of active female choice in this lekbreeding species. We compared observed sampling patterns with null models of random female movement and of movement weighted by the observed distribution of male success. The courts actually visited by individual females were significantly more clumped and centrally located than predicted by computer simulations of either random or weighted movement. Contrary to simplified hypotheses of female choice, hen cock-of-the-rock were not limited either to sequential comparisons or to threshold decision rules when selecting mates. Instead, they repeatedly sampled a subset of potential mates, using the pool-comparison tactic. Within this pool, females preferentially mated with the males ranked highest in terms of total courtship visits received, and rejected low-ranking males. Our results suggest complex interactions between patterns of female sampling and male dispersion in lek mating systems, and also provide insights into the constraints on female sampling in lek species. 相似文献

Summary Transmission and reception of high-frequency sound in the natural environment of bushcrickets (Tettigonia viridissima L.) was studied using the activity of an identified neuron in the insect's auditory pathway as a biological microphone. Different positions of the receiver within the habitat were simulated by systematic variation of the distance from a loudspeaker and the height above the ground. Attenuation and filtering properties of the habitat were investigated with pure-tone frequencies between 5 and 40 kHz. Sound attenuation in excess of the attenuation due to geometrical spreading alone increased with increasing frequency, distance between sender and receiver, and decreasing height within the vegetation (Figs. 2–4). The data also confirm the existence of two kinds of excess attenuation. The amount of amplitude fluctuations in the sound signals was investigated by analysing the variability of the neuronal responses at a given receiver position. Variability increased with decreasing bandwidth of a noise signal at some distance from the loadspeaker. The variability in the responses to pure tones increased with both increasing frequency and distance from the source (Fig. 7). In the selected habitat, the temporal pattern of the natural calling song of male T. viridissima was very reliably reflected in the activity of the recorded neuron up to a distance of 30 m at the top of the vegetation, and 15–20 m near ground level (Figs. 5, 8). The maximum hearing distance in response to the calling song was about 40 m. Environmental constraints on long-range acoustic communication in the habitat are discussed in relation to possible adaptations of both the signal structure and the behavior of the insects.Abbreviations excessive attenuation

Abstract: Evaluating logging systems to determine which are most compatible with the maintenance of biodiversity is of prime importance if tropical forests are to be managed in a sustainable way. Bats are model taxa for this purpose. Two different logging systems are used in the natural forest of the Victoria-Mayaro Forest Reserve in Trinidad: open range and periodic block. Open range is a continuous harvesting system and, in common with most methods used to log tropical forests worldwide, has few harvest controls other than girth limits for selected species. Periodic block is a polycyclic system, with felling based on ecological criteria assumed to be compatible with the maintenance of biodiversity. To compare the effects of periodic block and open-range systems on biodiversity, we determined bat species richness and abundance in each system and in primary forest. We caught bats in mist nets set at ground level and in the canopy and in harp traps. In total 1959 individuals representing 38 species were captured. Species richness was similar among primary forest and logged forest habitats, although bat diversity was lower in logged forest. The distributions of bat species abundance did not differ significantly between logged forest and primary forest. We found, however, that both logging systems lead to a decrease in gleaning animalivores and an increase in frugivores. The increase in frugivores was likely the result of an increase in the abundance of bat-dispersed pioneer fruiting plants in logged forest. Bats of periodic-block-managed forest were more similar to those of primary forest than those of forest logged using the open-range system, indicating that the periodic-block system is more compatible with the maintenance of bat diversity. Our results support the suggestion that the measured use of tropical forests can largely be compatible with biodiversity conservation. 相似文献

We present a model of error-prone female choice on leks, and investigate the effects of different degrees of error on the
distribution of mating success among males present at leks of different sizes. At higher levels of error, the best male is
predicted to gain a smaller share of matings, while low-ranking males gain a larger share. Males who are of high rank but
not the most desirable on the lek do best at intermediate levels of error, since the top-ranked male does not then claim all
the matings, but assessment is still sufficiently accurate for females to discriminate between high-ranking and low-ranking
competitors. The effects of error are shown to be more pronounced on larger leks, due to smaller expected differences in mating
value between males of adjacent ranks. This interaction between lek size and error suggests that observed negative relationships
between lek size and mating skew need not be attributed solely to intrasexual competition, as previously suggested, but could
also be a result of imperfect choice.

Summary Sexual selection through female mate choice was investigated in the lekking Jackson's widowbird by applying multivariate selection analysis to observational data from four leks. Males perform a stereotyped jump display on small display courts (dance rings) constructed by the males in open grassland. Females visit the lek solely for mating and nest on their own, away from the lek area. Few cases of interference during courtship and absence of position effects on mating success indicated that female choice within the leks was not pre-empted by male-male competition. In a set of 11 male traits with mating success as the dependent fitness measure, significant selection differentials (covariances) were found for the length of the conspicuous tail and the rate of the jump display, suggesting sexual selection of these traits. They also showed the largest selection gradients (partial effects) and thereby seem to be the cues on which females base their choice. The success of males in obtaining copulations appears to depend on two components: display rate and lek attendance affect the number of female visits, whereas tail length seems to primarily influence the chance of copulating with a visiting female. Tail length was positively related to a measure of body condition, which is of interest with regard to the suggestions that sexual ornaments may serve as indicators of male viability. 相似文献

Experimental evidence for the effects of chronic anthropogenic noise on abundance of Greater Sage-Grouse at leks 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Increasing evidence suggests that chronic noise from human activities negatively affects wild animals, but most studies have failed to separate the effects of chronic noise from confounding factors, such as habitat fragmentation. We played back recorded continuous and intermittent anthropogenic sounds associated with natural gas drilling and roads at leks of Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). For 3 breeding seasons, we monitored sage grouse abundance at leks with and without noise. Peak male attendance (i.e., abundance) at leks experimentally treated with noise from natural gas drilling and roads decreased 29% and 73%, respectively, relative to paired controls. Decreases in abundance at leks treated with noise occurred in the first year of the study and continued throughout the experiment. Noise playback did not have a cumulative effect over time on peak male attendance. There was limited evidence for an effect of noise playback on peak female attendance at leks or male attendance the year after the experiment ended. Our results suggest that sage-grouse avoid leks with anthropogenic noise and that intermittent noise has a greater effect on attendance than continuous noise. Our results highlight the threat of anthropogenic noise to population viability for this and other sensitive species. 相似文献

Abstract: Although extensive areas of tropical forest are selectively logged each year, the responses of bat communities to this form of disturbance have rarely been examined. Our objectives were to (1) compare bat abundance, species composition, and feeding guild structure between unlogged and low-intensity selectively logged (1–4 logged stems/ha) sampling grids in the southeastern Amazon and (2) examine correlations between logging-induced changes in bat communities and forest structure. We captured bats in understory and canopy mist nets set in five 1-ha study grids in both logged and unlogged forest. We captured 996 individuals, representing 5 families, 32 genera, and 49 species. Abundances of nectarivorous and frugivorous taxa (Glossophaginae, Lonchophyllinae, Stenodermatinae, and Carolliinae) were higher at logged sites, where canopy openness and understory foliage density were greatest. In contrast, insectivorous and omnivorous species (Emballonuridae, Mormoopidae, Phyllostominae, and Vespertilionidae) were more abundant in unlogged sites, where canopy foliage density and variability in the understory stratum were greatest. Multivariate analyses indicated that understory bat species composition differed strongly between logged and unlogged sites but provided little evidence of logging effects for the canopy fauna. Different responses among feeding guilds and taxonomic groups appeared to be related to foraging and echolocation strategies and to changes in canopy cover and understory foliage densities. Our results suggest that even low-intensity logging modifies habitat structure, leading to changes in bat species composition. 相似文献

We examined how mating success varied in relation to age, weight, body size, and display behavior among great bustard Otis tarda males. The estimated mating success was strongly skewed, with 45% of adult males being involved in copulation attempts and
only 9.7% actually seen copulating successfully. Unlike most birds, body size continued increasing in great bustards several
years after reaching sexual maturity. Age, weight, and display effort were all significant and independent predictors of male
mating success. The higher display effort involved performing longer full-display bouts. Older males could detach from the
male flock earlier in the season as well as on each day and spend longer seasonal and daily periods displaying as solitary
birds, which contributed to increase their mating success. In contrast, males weighing more did not invest more in display,
which suggests that they could be recognized as dominants by other males and selected by females through assessment of their
plumage sexual traits. In contrast to most other bird species, the system described for great bustards resembles that found
in some lek-mating ungulates, where social rank is a complex trait determined by both age and mass, and as in these mammals,
it suggests that sexual selection continues to favor a high male weight in this extremely sexually dimorphic species. 相似文献

Abstract: Evaluating the degree of disturbance of any region to determine its relative importance for conservation purposes requires procedures that are relatively inexpensive and that yield accurate results fast. Because bats are abundant, diverse, and easy to sample, especially in the Neotropical rainforest, they fulfill several of the requirements of indicator species as identified in the literature. For 10 months we sampled bat communities in the Selva Lacandona in Chiapas, Mexico, at 15 sites representing five habitats. We also measured 10 variables representing vegetation structure and diversity at each site. With fuzzy-set techniques we produced a gradient classification of disturbance for the 15 sites based on the vegetation data. We explored the relationship between vegetation conditions, described as the membership degrees in the construct "fuzzy forest set" (the complementary fuzzy set of "disturbance"), and four bat community variables. Bat species richness, number of rare bat species, and the bat diversity index were positively correlated with the vegetation scores, and relative abundance of the most abundant bat species was negatively correlated with vegetation scores. A high number of phyllostomine species in a community is a good indicator of low levels of disturbance. Although a single indicator group will probably not be sufficient for decision-making processes in conservation, evaluating bat populations may be a good first step in assessing an area's conservation value, especially in rainforest regions. 相似文献

Summary Populations of guppies, Poecilia reticulata and Hart's rivulus, Rivulus harti, in Trinidad experience different levels of predation hazard from piscivorous fish. Those from the larger rivers (downstream sites) experience chronically high predation hazard, while those from headwater streams (upstream sites) have few predators. Guppies and Hart's rivulus, collected from downstream and upstream sites, were assayed for their feeding rate in the presence and absence of predators. We defined tenacity as the ratio of the feeding rates in the presence and absence of a predator stimulus. Thus, tenacity expresses the degree to which the forager maintains its feeding rate when a predator stimulus is present. Previous work by Seghers (1973) showed that non-feeding guppies from downstream sites responded more strongly to predators than did guppies from upstream sites. Based on this, we initially hypothesized that fish from downstream sites would show lower tenacities than fish from upstream sites. However, we found the opposite in every case. When confronted with a predator stimulus, guppies and Hart's rivulus from downstream sites fed at consistently greater rates and displayed greater tenacities than did those from upstream sites. These differences were found in experiments using both live and model predators. The results suggest that upstream fish readily trade off feeding for hiding and avoiding predation hazard, a likely response when predators appear infrequently, while downstream fish appear to be selected for boldness and tenacity while foraging under chronically high hazard. 相似文献

Summary A number of aposematic butterfly and moth species sequester toxic substances from their host plants. Some of these insects can detect the toxic compounds during food assessment. Some pipevine swallowtails use aristolochic acids among the host finding cues during oviposition and larval feeding and accumulate the toxins in the body tissues throughout all life stages. Likewise, a danaine butterfly,Idea leuconoe, which sequesters high concentrations of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the body, lays eggs in response to the specific alkaloid components contained in the apocynad host. Insect species sharing the same poisonous host plants may differ in the degree of sequestration of toxins. Two closely ralated aposematic geometrid moth species,Arichanna gaschkevitchii andA. melanaria, sequester a series of highly toxic diterpenoids (grayanotoxins) in different degrees, while a cryptic geometrid species,Biston robstus, does not sequester the toxins, illustrating the diversity in adaptation mechanisms even within the same subfamily. By contrast, a number of lepidopteran species store the same compounds though feeding upon taxonomically diverse plant species. A bitter cyanoglycoside, sarmentosin, was characterised from several moth species in the Geometridae, Zygaenidae and Yponomeutidae, and from the apollo butterflies,Parnassius spp. (Papilionidae), although each species feeds on different groups of plants.Interspecific similarities and differences in life history and ecology are discussed in relation to variable characteristics of sequestration of plant compounds among these lepidopteran insects. 相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) is a widespread phenomenon in nature, and yet the simplest theoretical models of IGP predict that coexistence of intraguild predator and prey is only possible under restrictive assumptions. Here I examine how a specialist or generalist natural enemy of these species affects their long-term persistence and abundance, as functions of the natural enemy's relative attack severity and fecundity on each species. Notably, I show that failure to include the effects of a higher trophic level in models of IGP can lead to incorrect predictions about the coexistence or exclusion of guild members. I then consider how an interaction between native species and a natural enemy is perturbed by the arrival of an invasive intraguild predator. I outline the conditions under which the native species and/or its natural enemy are threatened by the arrival of the intraguild predator, and also when the natural enemy is beneficial in preventing the initial invasion or eventual dominance of the invader. This work provides new insights on the influence of omnivory on food web stability, and also generates testable hypotheses for predicting the impact of a novel intraguild predator on the recipient community at multiple trophic levels. 相似文献
