Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region is one of the most important political, economic and cultural centers of China. The rapid development of economy in last decades has caused severe air pollution problems, which has resulted in considerable harm to local ecological environment and human health. In this study, total 671 air samples were collected from Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang (the capital city in Hebei province), one reference site and four background sites in four seasons. Particulate matters (PMs) with different sizes, elements and dissolvable ions in PMs were analyzed. Pollutant concentrations, characteristics and seasonal variations were discussed in order to describe the pollution status and the possible sources in this region. Enriched factors of K, Ca, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were all higher than 10. Concentrations of dissolvable ions were in the order of NO3, SO42–>NH4+>Cl>Ca2+, K+, Na+>Mg2+, F. NO3, SO42–, NH4+, Cl were the most important ion pollutants in the three cities which accounted for 90.3–92.3% of total 9 ion concentrations. Ion concentrations in the PMs were in the order of PM1>PM1–2.5>PM2.5–10>PM10>TSP. More than 50% of the dissolvable ions exist in PM1 and the percentage increases to 73.9–94.8% in PM2.5. Human activities should be the main sources of the metallic pollutants, among which coal combustion was identified as the primary one.  相似文献

Abstract

Air quality inside Asian temples is typically poor because of the burning of incense. This study measured and analyzed concentrations of fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5–10) particulate matter and their metal elements inside a temple in central Taiwan. Experimental results showed that the concentrations of metals Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cr inside the temple were higher than those at rural, suburban, urban, and industrial areas in other studies. Three theoretical parent distributions (lognormal, Weibull, and gamma) were used to fit the measured data. The lognormal distribution was the most appropriate distribution for representing frequency distributions of PM10, PM2.5, and their metal elements.

Furthermore, the central limit theorem, H-statistic-based scheme, and parametric and nonparametric bootstrap methods were used to estimate confidence intervals for mean pollutant concentrations. The estimated upper confidence limits (UCLs) of means between different methods were very consistent, because the sample coefficient of variation (CV) was <1. When the sample CV was >1, the UCL based on H-statistical method tended to overestimate the UCLs when compared with other methods. Confidence intervals for pollutant concentrations at different percentiles were evaluated using parametric and nonparametric bootstrap methods. The probabilities of pollutants exceeding a critical concentration were also calculated.  相似文献

Abstract

Three 2-wk seasonal field campaigns were performed in 2003 and 2004 at a sampling site on the southern Tyrrhenian coast of Italy with the aim to investigate the dynamics and characteristics of particle-bound pollutants in the Mediterranean area. Fine (PM2.5) and coarse particulate matter (PM10–2.5) size fractions were collected by a manual dichotomous sampler on 37-mm Teflon filters over a 24-hr sampling period. On average, 70% of the total PM10 (PM2.5 + PM10–2.5) mass was associated with the coarse fraction and 30% with the fine fraction during the three campaigns. The ambient concentrations of Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, Mn, V, Cd, Fe, Cu, Ca, and Mg associated with both size fractions were determined by atomic absorption spec-trometry. Ambient concentrations showed differences in their absolute value, ranging from few ng · m-3 to µg ?m-3, as well as in their variability within the PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 size fractions. PM10 levels were well below the European Union (EU) limit value during the study period with the exception of three events during the first campaign (fall) and five events during the third campaign (spring). Two main sources were identified as the major contributors including mineral dust, transported from North Africa, and sea spray from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Comparing the results with backward trajectories, calculated using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT) and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer-National Aeronautics and Space Administration (TOMS-NASA) maps, it was observed that in central and eastern Europe, the Tyrrhenian Sea and North Africa were the major emission source regions that affected the temporal variations and daily averages of PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 concentrations.  相似文献

This study characterized the dry deposition flux and dry deposition velocity (Vd) of metallic elements attached on particulate matter. Specifically, large particles (>10 μm), coarse particles (10 μm~2.5 μm), and fine particles (<2.5 μm) were studied at the Gong Ming Junior High School (Taichung Airport) and Taichung Harbor sampling sites in central Taiwan. Ambient air samples were collected to determine total suspended particulate matter (TSP), dry deposition plate (DDP), Vd, coarse particulate matter (PM2.5–10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and metallic elements concentrations at the Airport and Taichung Harbor sites between June 17, 2013, and November 14, 2013. The results revealed that the average TSP, DDP, Vd, PM2.5–10, and PM2.5 particulate at the Airport were 54.55 (μg/m3), 902.25 (μg/m2-min), 17.11 (m/sec), 0.003 (μg/m3), and 0.010 (μg/m3), respectively; while these values at Taichung Harbor were 63.66 (μg/m3), 539.69 (μg/m2-min), 9.94 (m/sec), 0.003 (μg/m3), and 0.014 (μg/m3), respectively. In addition, the results showed that the average Cu and Pb concentrations were higher than Cr, Ni, and Cd for both the airport and harbor sampling sites. Furthermore, Cr, N, Cu, Cd, and Pb had the highest average concentrations versus those reported for other study areas, with one exception: The results obtained in Kacanik, Kosovo, during 2005. The average metallic elements concentrations order was Cu > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cd.  相似文献

Results concerning the levels and elemental compositions of daily PM10 samples collected at four air quality monitoring sites in Palermo (Italy) are presented. The highest mean value of PM10 concentrations (46 μg m−3, with a peak value of 158 μg m−3) was recorded at the Di Blasi urban station, and the lowest at Boccadifalco station (25 μg m−3), considered as a sub-urban background station. Seventeen elements (Al, As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, U, V, Zn) were measured by ICP-MS. Al and Fe showed the highest concentrations, indicating the significant contribution of soil and resuspended mineral particles to atmospheric PM10. Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn had higher concentrations at the three urban sampling sites than at the sub-urban background station. Besides soil-derived particles, an R-mode cluster analysis revealed a group of elements, Mo, Cu, Cr, Sb and Zn, probably related to non-exhaust vehicle emission, and another group, consisting of Ba, As and Ni, which seemed to be associated both with exhaust emissions from road traffic, and other combustion processes such as incinerators or domestic heating plants. The results also suggest that Sb, or the association Sb–Cu–Mo, offers a way of tracing road traffic emissions.  相似文献

Tobacco smoking is one of the greatest sources of indoor inhalable (PM10) particles. In the past, the studies conducted on indoor particulates were mostly related to PM10, however in the last decade respirable particles (PM2.5) and even smaller particles (PM1) began to be more important as they penetrate deeper in the respiratory system, causing severe health effects. Therefore, more information on fine particles is needed. Aiming to evaluate the impact of tobacco smoke on public health, this work evaluates the influence of tobacco smoke on the characteristics of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 considering concentration and elemental composition. Samples were collected at sites influenced by tobacco smoke, as well as at reference sites, using low-volume samplers; the element analyses were performed by proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE); Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Cd, I, Ba, La, Ce and Pb were quantified. At the sites influenced by tobacco smoke concentrations were 270–560% higher for PM10 and 320–680% higher for PM2.5 than at reference sites. Tobacco smoke increased the total concentrations of five carcinogenic elements (Cr, Ni, As, Cd and Pb) 1100–2400% for PM10 and 840–2200% for PM2.5. The elements associated with tobacco smoke (S, K, Cr, Ni, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) were predominantly present in the fine fraction; the elements mostly originating from building erosion (Mg, Al, Si and Ca) predominantly occurred in the coarse particles. The analysis of enrichment factors confirmed that tobacco smoking mainly influenced the composition of the fine fraction of particles; as these smaller particles have a strong influence on health, these conclusions are relevant for the development of strategies to protect public health.  相似文献

In this study, variations of particulate matter (PM) concentrations in subway trains following installation of platform screen doors (PSDs) in the Seoul subway system were investigated. PM samples were collected in the trains on subway lines 1–8 before and after installation of PSDs. It was found that the mean PM10 concentration in the trains after PSDs installation increased significantly by 29.9% compared to that before installation. In particular, the increase of PM10 in line 6 was the highest at 103%. When the relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 was compared, coefficients of determination (r2) before and after PSDs installations were 0.696 and 0.169, respectively. This suggests that air mixing between the platform and the tunnel after PSDs installation was extremely restricted. In addition, the indoor/outdoor PM10 ratio following PSDs installation increased from 1.32 to 2.97 relative to the period with no installed PSDs. Furthermore, this study revealed that PM levels in subway trains increased significantly after all underground PSDs were put in use. Several potential factors were examined that could result in this PM increase, such as train ventilation systems, operational conditions, passenger volume, subway depth, and the length of underground segments.
ImplicationsPM10 concentrations inside the subway trains increased after PSDs installation. This indicates that air quality in trains was very seriously impacted by PSDs. PM10 levels were also influenced by the tunnel depth and length of the underground segments. To prevent the adverse effect on human health by PM10 emitted from the tunnel, an applicable ventilation system to reduce PM10 is required inside trains and tunnels.  相似文献

Atmospheric total suspended particulate concentrations and metallic element concentrations were measured at three locations, characteristic of urban, suburban and rural sites. The sampling period was from July 2000 to August 2000. The results indicated that the urban sampling site had the highest total suspended particulate concentrations (average 108.61μ1m3), followed by the suburban site (average 60.11μ1m3) and the rural site (average 53.31μ1m3). The average PM2.5 concentrations (24.11μ1m3) were higher than the PM2.5-10 concentrations (12.81μ1m3) at the urban site. The average distributed ratios for PM2.5/PM2.5-10 were about 1.29, 1.53, 0.12, 1.12 and 2.31 for Pb, Zn, Fe, Ni and Cr, respectively. The average total suspended particulate mass ratios for daytime and nighttime were about 1.72. As for the elements Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, Ni and Cr, these ratios were about 0.63, 0.97, 0.54, 1.66, 0.53 and 1.12, respectively. The total suspended particulate daytime concentrations of Pb and Zn were positively correlated (R = 0.925) at the urban sampling site. The elements Ni and Cr were positively correlated both during the daytime (R = 0.648) and the nighttime (R = 0.511), revealing that they came from the same emission source during daytime and nighttime, at the urban sampling site.  相似文献

Particulate matter is an important air pollutant, especially in closed environments like underground subway stations. In this study, a total of 13 elements were determined from PM10 and PM2.5 samples collected at two subway stations (Imam Khomeini and Sadeghiye) in Tehran’s subway system. Sampling was conducted in April to August 2011 to measure PM concentrations in platform and adjacent outdoor air of the stations. In the Imam Khomeini station, the average concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 94.4?±?26.3 and 52.3?±?16.5 μg m?3 in the platform and 81.8?±?22.2 and 35?±?17.6 μg m?3 in the outdoor air, respectively. In the Sadeghiye station, mean concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 87.6?±?23 and 41.3?±?20.4 μg m?3 in the platform and 73.9?±?17.3 and 30?±?15 μg m?3, in the outdoor air, respectively. The relative contribution of elemental components in each particle fraction were accounted for 43 % (PM10) and 47.7 % (PM2.5) in platform of Imam Khomeini station and 15.9 % (PM10) and 18.5 % (PM2.5) in the outdoor air of this station. Also, at the Sadeghiye station, each fraction accounted for 31.6 % (PM10) and 39.8 % (PM2.5) in platform and was 11.7 % (PM10) and 14.3 % (PM2.5) in the outdoor. At the Imam Khomeini station, Fe was the predominant element to represent 32.4 and 36 % of the total mass of PM10 and PM2.5 in the platform and 11.5 and 13.3 % in the outdoor, respectively. At the Sadeghiye station, this element represented 22.7 and 29.8 % of total mass of PM10 and PM2.5 in the platform and 8.7 and 10.5 % in the outdoor air, respectively. Other major crustal elements were 5.8 % (PM10) and 5.3 % (PM2.5) in the Imam Khomeini station platform and 2.3 and 2.4 % in the outdoor air, respectively. The proportion of other minor elements was significantly lower, actually less than 7 % in total samples, and V was the minor concentration in total mass of PM10 and PM2.5 in both platform stations.  相似文献

Indoor smoking ban in public places can reduce secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. However, smoking in cars and homes has continued. The purpose of this study was to assess particulate matter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) concentration in moving cars with different window opening conditions. The PM2.5 level was measured by an aerosol spectrometer inside and outside moving cars simultaneously, along with ultrafine particle (UFP) number concentration, speed, temperature and humidity inside cars. Two sport utility vehicles were used. Three different ventilation conditions were evaluated by up to 20 repeated experiments. In the pre-smoking phase, average in-vehicle PM2.5 concentrations were 16–17 μg m?3. Regardless of different window opening conditions, the PM2.5 levels promptly increased when smoking occurred and decreased after cigarette was extinguished. Although only a single cigarette was smoked, the average PM2.5 levels were 506–1307 μg m?3 with different window opening conditions. When smoking was ceased, the average PM2.5 levels for 15 min were several times higher than the US National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 35 μg m?3. It took longer than 10 min to reach the level of the pre-smoking phase. Although UFP levels had a similar temporal profile of PM2.5, the increased levels during the smoking phase were relatively small. This study demonstrated that the SHS exposure in cars with just a single cigarette being smoked could exceed the US EPA NAAQS under realistic window opening conditions. Therefore, the findings support the need for public education against smoking in cars and advocacy for a smoke-free car policy.  相似文献

Personal measurements of exposure to particulate air pollution (PM10, PM2.5, PM1) were simultaneously made during walking and in-car journeys on two suburban routes in Northampton, UK, during the winter of 1999/2000. Comparisons were made between concentrations found in each transport mode by particle fraction, between different particle fractions by transport mode, and between transport microenvironments and a fixed-site monitor located within the study area. High levels of correlation were seen between walking and in-car concentrations for each of the particle fractions (PM10: r2=0.82; PM2.5: r2=0.98; PM1: r2=0.99). On an average, PM10 concentrations were 16% higher inside the car than for the walker, but there were no difference in average PM2.5 and PM1 concentrations between the two modes. High PM2.5:PM10 ratios (0.6–0.73) were found to be associated with elevated sulphate levels. The PM2.5:PM10 and PM1:PM2.5 ratios were shown to be similar between walking and in-car concentrations. Concentrations of PM10 were found to be more closely related between transport mode than either mode was with concentrations recorded at the fixed-site (roadside) monitor. The fixed-site monitor was shown to be a poor marker for PM10 concentrations recorded during walking and in-car on a route over 1 km away.  相似文献

Aeolian river dust can seriously affect the air quality in central Taiwan. The main purpose of this study was to assess the concentration variations of PM10 and metals at different elementary schools during river dust episodes. River dust samples were taken from eight sites in the main bare soil areas of the Choshui River. PM10 aerosols from four elementary schools in Yulin County were collected by means of high-volume samplers. Fifteen elements (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, Ti, Ni, V, Cr, As, Pb, Cu, Co, and Cd) in the river dust and PM10 were analyzed in this study. The coefficients of divergence (CDs) were obtained by comparing the metal compositions in PM10 aerosols at the four schools on the sampling days with the mean metal contents in the river soil samples as reference. The CD values showed that metal compositions in the aerosols at high-exposure sites during river dust episodes were similar to those compositions in the river dust. The concentrations of PM10 at the high-exposure schools during river dust episodes were much higher than those during non-river-dust episodes. This study also indicated that at the high-exposure sites, both the PM10 and metal concentrations were higher than at the low-exposure and control sites, not only during the river dust episodes, but also after the river dust episodes. The concentrations of toxic metals (Ni, Cr, As, and Cd) at the high-exposure sites were about 11.3 times higher during the river dust episodes (189 ng/m3) than during non-river-dust episodes (16.7 ng/m3) and about 8.9 times higher during the same periods at the control site (21.3 ng/m3).  相似文献

An Aerosol and Oceanographic Science Expedition (AEROSE) on the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown collected PM2.5 particles from a Saharan dust storm in March 2004. High levels of PM2.5 (120 μg m?3) were measured during this Saharan storm over the Atlantic Ocean. The particles were characterized for trace element content, with Al and Fe the most abundant metals. These metals were detected in high concentrations during the Saharan event and exhibited good correlations with PM2.5, suggesting its soil origin. Other elements (Pb, Ni, Cd) did not correlate with Al and Fe, indicating their anthropogenic origin. Enrichment factor calculation conducted on these trace elements support our findings. Trace element analyses performed on particulate matter from a reference site on land in Puerto Rico (Fajardo), demonstrated similar results to those obtained in the AEROSE expedition, where high concentrations of PM2.5 and Fe were present concomitantly with Saharan events at this station.  相似文献

Global emissions reported by many authors have shown as natural and anthropic sources can contribute to the principal aerosol classes, but values change according the local scenario. The Venice Lagoon is exposed to different anthropic source emissions like vehicular traffic, industrial thermoelectric power plant, petrochemical plant, incinerator plant, domestic heating, ship traffic, glass factories and airport. Samplings of PM2.5 were daily performed between March and November 2007 in Sacca San Biagio island (Venice), and values of PM2.5 concentration and element concentration were obtained. Monthly average concentrations (μg m?3) during this period show higher values during the spring and the autumn. A good relationship between data obtained and concentration values from environmental local agencies is evidenced, both for PM2.5 from urban area (Venezia Mestre), and for PM10 sampled in the same area, as well as the influence of some meteorological parameters on PM2.5 concentration sampled. Trace elements samples were measured by an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (ICP-QMS), and values (ng m?3 and μg g?1) for elements regulated by European directives (As, Cd, Ni, Pb), as well as, other elements (Na, Al, K, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Ag) are also reported. Data analysis by mean of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) pointed out four principal groups of elements like Mn–Fe–K, As–Se–Cd, V–Co, and Pb that could be assigned to specific sources of the Venetian wetland basin.  相似文献

Particulate matter, including coarse particles (PM2.5–10, aerodynamic diameter of particle between 2.5 and 10 μm) and fine particles (PM2.5, aerodynamic diameter of particle lower than 2.5 μm) and their compositions, including elemental carbon, organic carbon, and 11 water-soluble ionic species, and elements, were measured in a tunnel study. A comparison of the six-hour average of light-duty vehicle (LDV) flow of the two sampling periods showed that the peak hours over the weekend were higher than those on weekdays. However, the flow of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) on the weekdays was significant higher than that during the weekend in this study. EC and OC content were 49% for PM2.5–10 and 47% for PM2.5 in the tunnel center. EC content was higher than OC content in PM2.5–10, but EC was about 2.3 times OC for PM2.5. Sulfate, nitrate, ammonium were the main species for PM2.5–10 and PM2.5. The element contents of Na, Al, Ca, Fe and K were over 0.8 μg m?3 in PM2.5–10 and PM2.5. In addition, the concentrations of S, Ba, Pb, and Zn were higher than 0.1 μg m?3 for PM2.5–10 and PM2.5. The emission factors of PM2.5–10 and PM2.5 were 18 ± 6.5 and 39 ± 11 mg km?1-vehicle, respectively. The emission factors of EC/OC were 3.6/2.7 mg km?1-vehicle for PM2.5–10 and 15/4.7 mg km?1-vehicle for PM2.5 Furthermore, the emission factors of water-soluble ions were 0.028(Mg2+)–0.81(SO42?) and 0.027(NO2?)–0.97(SO42?) mg km?1-vehicle for PM2.5–10 and PM2.5, respectively. Elemental emission factors were 0.003(V)–1.6(Fe) and 0.001(Cd)–1.05(Na) mg km?1-vehicle for PM2.5–10 and PM2.5, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

Wildfires and prescribed burns are receiving increasing attention as sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The goal of this research project was to understand the impact of mitigation strategies for residences impacted by scheduled prescribed burns and wildfires. Pairs of residences were solicited to have PM2.5 concentrations monitored inside and outside of their houses during four fires. The effect of using air cleaners on indoor PM2.5 was investigated, as well as the effect of keeping windows closed. Appropriately sized air cleaners were provided to one of each pair of residences; occupants of all of the residences were asked to keep windows shut and minimize opening of exterior doors. Additionally, residents were asked to record all of the activities that may be a source of particulate matter, such as cooking and cleaning. Measurements were made during one prescribed burn and three wildfires during the 2002 fire season. Outdoor 24‐hr average PM2.5 concentrations ranging from 6 to 38 µg/m3 were measured during the fires, compared with levels of 2–5 µg/m3 during background measurements when no fires were burning. During the fires, PM2.5 was <3 µg/m3 inside all of the houses with air cleaners installed. This corresponds with a decrease of 63–88% in homes with the air cleaners operating when compared with homes without air cleaners. In the homes without the air cleaners, measured indoor concentrations were 58–100% of the concentrations measured outdoors.  相似文献

This paper presents results from an in-vehicle air quality study of public transit buses in Toledo, Ohio, involving continuous monitoring, and experimental and statistical analyses to understand in-vehicle particulate matter (PM) behavior inside buses operating on B20-grade biodiesel fuel. The study also focused on evaluating the effects of vehicle’s fuel type, operating periods, operation status, passenger counts, traffic conditions, and the seasonal and meteorological variation on particulates with aerodynamic diameter less than 1 micron (PM1.0). The study found that the average PM1.0 mass concentrations in B20-grade biodiesel-fueled bus compartments were approximately 15 μg m?3, while PM2.5 and PM10 concentration averages were approximately 19 μg m?3 and 37 μg m?3, respectively. It was also observed that average hourly concentration trends of PM1.0 and PM2.5 followed a “μ-shaped” pattern during transit hours.Experimental analyses revealed that the in-vehicle PM1.0 mass concentrations were higher inside diesel-fueled buses (10.0–71.0 μg m?3 with a mean of 31.8 μg m?3) as compared to biodiesel buses (3.3–33.5 μg m?3 with a mean of 15.3 μg m?3) when the windows were kept open. Vehicle idling conditions and open door status were found to facilitate smaller particle concentrations inside the cabin, while closed door facilitated larger particle concentrations suggesting that smaller particles were originating outside the vehicle and larger particles were formed within the cabin, potentially from passenger activity. The study also found that PM1.0 mass concentrations at the back of bus compartment (5.7–39.1 μg m?3 with a mean of 28.3 μg m?3) were higher than the concentrations in the front (5.7–25.9 μg m?3 with a mean of 21.9 μg m?3), and the mass concentrations inside the bus compartment were generally 30–70% lower than the just-outside concentrations. Further, bus route, window position, and time of day were found to affect the in-vehicle PM concentrations significantly. Overall, the in-vehicle PM1.0 concentrations inside the buses operating on B20-grade biodiesel ranged from 0.7 μg m?3 to 243 μg m?3, with a median of 11.6 μg m?3.Statistical models developed to study the effects of vehicle operation and ambient conditions on in-vehicle PM concentrations suggested that while open door status was the most important influencing variable for finer particles and higher passenger activity resulted in higher coarse particles concentrations inside the vehicle compartments, ambient PM concentrations contributed to all PM fractions inside the bus irrespective of particle size.  相似文献

The ambient air of the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA) in Mexico frequently exhibits high levels of PM10 and PM2.5. However, no information exists on the chemical composition of coarse particles (PMc = PM10 – PM2.5). A monitoring campaign was conducted during the summer of 2015, during which 24-hr average PM10 and PM2.5 samples were collected using high-volume filter-based instruments to chemically characterize the fine and coarse fractions of the PM. The collected samples were analyzed for anions (Cl, NO3, SO42–), cations (Na+, NH4+, K+), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and 35 trace elements (Al to Pb). During the campaign, the average PM2.5 concentrations did not showed significance differences among sampling sites, whereas the average PMc concentrations did. In addition, the PMc accounted for 75% to 90% of the PM10 across the MMA. The average contribution of the main chemical species to the total mass indicated that geological material including Ca, Fe, Si, and Al (45%) and sulfates (11%) were the principal components of PMc, whereas sulfates (54%) and organic matter (30%) were the principal components of PM2.5. The OC-to-EC ratio for PMc ranged from 4.4 to 13, whereas that for PM2.5 ranged from 3.97 to 6.08. The estimated contribution of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) to the total mass of organic aerosol in PM2.5 was estimated to be around 70–80%; for PMc, the contribution was lower (20–50%). The enrichment factors (EF) for most of the trace elements exhibited high values for PM2.5 (EF: 10–1000) and low values for PMc (EF: 1–10). Given the high contribution of crustal elements and the high values of EFs, PMc is heavily influenced by soil resuspension and PM2.5 by anthropogenic sources. Finally, the airborne particles found in the eastern region of the MMA were chemically distinguishable from those in its western region.

Implications: Concentration and chemical composition patterns of fine and coarse particles can vary significantly across the MMA. Public policy solutions have to be built based on these observations. There is clear evidence that the spatial variations in the MMA’s coarse fractions are influenced by clearly recognizable primary emission sources, while fine particles exhibit a homogeneous concentration field and a clear spatial pattern of increasing secondary contributions. Important reductions in the coarse fraction can come from primary particles’ emission controls; for fine particles, control of gaseous precursors—particularly sulfur-containing species and organic compounds—should be considered.  相似文献

This study provides the first comprehensive report on mass concentrations of particulate matter of various sizes, inorganic and organic gas concentrations monitored at three sampling sites in the city of Palermo (Sicily, Italy). It also provides information on the water-soluble species and trace elements. A total of 2054 PM10 (1333) and PM2.5 (721) daily measurements were collected from November 2006 to February 2008. The highest mass concentrations were observed at the urban stations, average values being about two times higher than those at the suburban (control) site. Time variations in PM10 and also PM10–2.5 were observed at the urban stations, the highest concentrations being measured in autumn and winter. CO, NOx, NO2, benzene, toluene and o-xylene concentrations peaked in autumn and winter, a pattern similar to those recorded for PM10 and PM10–2.5 mass levels, indicating the importance of traffic emissions in urban air pollution. 91% and 51% of the benzene measurements exceeded the limit of 5 μg m?3 at the two urban monitoring sites. Trace elements (As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sb) suspected of being introduced into the atmosphere mainly by anthropogenic activities, were highly enriched with respect to local soil. Results indicate that a large fraction of PM10 (31–47% in weight) and PM2.5 (29% in weight) is made up of water-soluble ions. Ammonium sulphate and nitrate particles accounted for 14–29 wt% of particulate matter mass concentrations. Crustal and marine components, combined, account for 41% and 49% in PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. The calculated deficits in Cl- and NH4+ ions suggest that a proportion of these ions are lost, via the formation of gaseous NH4Cl or HCl and NH3.  相似文献

In order to improve and establish the localized source profile of PM2.5 in Fuxin, the ashes under dust catcher were collected from four typical coal-fired power plants in Fuxin and twenty-eight components were measured. The source profile of PM2.5 in the soot of the four coal-fired power plants was established. SO42? was the most abundant component in the PM2.5 of the soot of the four coal-fired power plants, followed by Ca2+ and organic carbon (OC). The content of element components in PM2.5 smoke ranges from 5.06 to 10.97%, the content of ionic components ranges from 36.53 to 48.59%, and the total carbon content ranges from 9.43 to 11.36%. The divergence coefficient of PM2.5 source profile in Fuxin coal burning smoke is mostly similar to that of Fushun, whereas the divergence coefficient of Colorado reaches 0.65, indicating that Fuxin coal burning power plant smoke has no similarity to Colorado. The order of the geological accumulation index of Ni, Cu, V, Mn, and Cr was Cr (4.58) > Mn (4.42) > V (4.38) > Cu (4.09) > Ni (4.06), showing a heavy pollution level. The health risk assessment model recommended by the USEPA was used to assess the health risk of heavy metals in soot of coal-fired power plants, and the non-carcinogenic risk values of As for children and adults were 45.7 and 4.90, respectively. The carcinogenic risk values of Cr for adults and children were the highest, with values of 3.66 × 10?5 and 2.06 × 10?5, respectively, followed by As.
