Adaptation of solitary corals, Fungia repanda and F. echinata, and their zooxanthellae to low light and ultraviolet light B (UV-B) was studied with respect to changes in their protein contents, photosynthetic pigment contents and the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves. The corals were collected from 1 to 50 m depths in the Republic of Belau (Paulau) in 1990 and 1991. The chlorophyll a content in a unit surface area of the coral did not change significantly with the depth of the habitat, whereas cellular chlorophyll a in the algae increased with the depth. Zooxanthellae density and protein content in a unit surface area of Fungia spp. decreased with the depth. Photosynthetic parameters normalized by a unit surface area of the Fungia spp., maximum gross photosynthetic rate (P gmax area-1) and dark respiration rate (R area-1), were negatively correlated with the depth, while initial slope of the P-I curve () did not show significant correlation with the depth. Compensation light intensity (Ic) decreased with the depth. In isolated zooxanthellae, P max chl a -1, and R chl a -1 decreased with the depth, while chl a was constant. P gmax cell-1 and R cell-1 did not change significantly but cell increased with the depth. Ic decreased with the depth as in the intact corals. Reduction of protein content in a unit area of the coral from deeper habitat implies decrease of host animal tissues. Reduction of Ic can be explained by decrease of R area-1, which may be due to the diminution of animal tissues. The photoadaptational response to low light intensity of intact Fungia spp. was found to be a combination of the photoadaptation of symbiotic algae and the decrease of host animal tissue. In order to study their adaptation to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, P-I curves of Fungia spp. and isolated zooxanthellae were analyzed before and after UV-B irradiation. 1 h UV-B irradiation showed no effect on the photosynthetic rate of the shallow water (1 m) corals, while it inhibited the photosynthesis of the deep water (30 m) corals and zooxanthellae isolated from both shallow and deep water corals. These results indicate that the host, Fungia spp., in shallow water have protective mechanism for intense UV-B in their habitat. These photoadaptational mechanisms seem to allow the Fungia spp. to have wide vertical distribution where light intensity spans more than two orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Monthly variation in photosynthesis, dark respiration, chlorophyll a content and carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratios in different lamina sections of adult plants of Ascoseira mirabilis Skottsberg from King George Island, Antarctica, was investigated between September 1993 and February 1994. Light saturated net photosynthesis (P max) showed maximum values in September (12 to 25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1), and decreased towards the summer to values ranging between 2.0 and 5.0 mol O2 g-1. In the distal section, however, a second optimum occurred in December (25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1). Dark respiration rates were also highest in October and November and decreased strongly in December to February (6.0 and 1.0 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1, respectively). Gross photosynthesis exhibited high values between September and December. Concomitant with the seasonal decrease of photosynthetic efficiency () from mean values of 1.2 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in September to 0.3 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in January, the initial light saturating point (I k) gradually increased from 19 to 60 mol photons m-2 s-1. Likewise C:N ratios were low in spring (12 to 13) and increased in summer (20). In general, the photosynthetic parameters P max, gross photosynthesis, and Chl a concentrations were significantly higher in the distal section of the thallus. In contrast, C:N ratios were lower in the distal section of the lamina. The results show that photosynthesis obviously strongly supports growth of the alga in late winter to spring, as it does in some morphologically related brown algae from temperate and polar regions. The question whether growth is additionally powered  相似文献

Individuals of the midwater ctenophore Bathocyroe fosteri (0.01 to 1.6 g dry weight, DW) were collected from Bahamian waters by the submersible Johnson-Sea-Link during May and September/October 1983 and October/November 1984 from 530 to 700 m depth. Metabolic rates were measured and showed oxygen consumption to be in the range of 0.01 to 0.18 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 at temperatures ranging from 9° to 12°C. Ammonium excretion (0.01 to 0.14 g-at N g-1 DW h-1) was typically low. Energy expenditures estimated from respiration data (ca. 7% body C d-1) indicated that one to three midwater crustacean prey (ca. 150 g C d-1) could provide the daily maintenance ration required by a 40 mm ctenophore. These metabolic characteristics complemented in situ observations of poor locomotor ability and passive feeding behavior.  相似文献

In an attempt to evaluate CO2 changes as an index of net ecosystem metabolism, CO2 and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by infrared (IR) analysis and O2 by the Winkler method were followed over 12 diel cycles in a salt marsh, a simulated estuarine ecosystem, and the mixed layer of the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Each ecosystem exhibited replicable diel cycles, net production during the photoperiod, and a significant inverse correlation between CO2 and O2 changes. Daily rates of system production and respiration calculated from CO2, however, exceeded those from O2 by 1.5 to 3.5 fold in nearshore waters and by 2 to 6 fold in the open ocean. Net total system apparent production based on O2 and CO2, respectively, were 2 345 and 3 604 mg C m-3d-1 for the salt marsh, 348 and 625 mg C m-3d-1 for the estuarine ecosystem, and 53 and 306 mg C m-3d-1 for the oceanic ecosystem, both parameters exceeding 14C data in the literature for similar environments by one to two orders of magnitude. The IR CO2 productivity estimates are compatible with the diel cycles in DOC. In the marsh and Caribbean Sea, maxinium DOC concentrations were usually observed in the evening following a gradual accumulation during the photoperiod, while minimal values occurred in the early morning. In all ecosystems the average net release of DOC lagged CO2 uptake and O2 production and represented 22.7 and 43.3% of the carbon fixed as estimated from CO2 uptake and O2 production, respectively. If the consistently higher CO2 measurements are not a systematic error nor due to atmospheric diffusion, then diel variation in O2 and CO2 may not always be quantitatively coupled due in part to habitat-dependent factors such as the nonphotosynthetic incorporation of CO2 and chemosynthetic removal of O2.  相似文献

Nannochloris atomus was maintained in exponential growth at photon flux densities (PFD) from 400 to 700 nm, ranging from 10 to 200 mol m-2 s-1. Growth was lightsaturated at PFDs in excess of 100 mol m-2 s-1, with a mean light-saturated growth rate at 23 °C of 1.5×10-5s-1 (1.2 d-1). The light-limited growth rates extrapolated to a compensation PFD for growth that was not significantly different from zero, although no changes in cell numbers were observed in a single culture incubated at a PFD of 1.0 mol m-2s-1. Dark-respiration rates were independent of PFD, averaging 1.7×10-6 mol O2 mol-1 C s-1 (0.14 mol O2 mol-1 C d-1). The maximum photon (quantum) efficiency of photosynthesis was also independent of PFD, with a mean value of 0.12 mol O2 mol-1 photon. The chlorophyll a-specific light absorption cross-section ranged from 3 to 6×10-3 m2 mg-1 chl a and was lowest at low PFDs due to intracellular self-shading of pigments associated with high cell-chlorophyll a contents. The C:chl a ratio increased from 10 to 40 mg C mg-1 chl a between PFDs of 14 and 200 mol m-2 s-1. These new observations for N. atomus are compared with our previous observations for the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum in terms of an energy budget for microalgal growth.  相似文献

Diurnal variation of nitrogen cycling in coastal, marine sediments   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A closed chamber technique was developed to determine the emission of microbially produced N2O from an estuarine sediment. A diurnal variation was observed; maximum emissions of 0.4 to 4.0 mol N2O–N m-2 h-1 were recorded at night whereas the rates were low or even negative, -0.4 to 0.4 mol N2O–N m-2 h-1, during the day. The bacterial denitrification located in the uppermost centimeter was apparently the major source of the emitted N2O. The diurnal emission pattern was thus inversely related to the O2 availability at the sediment surface; in the dark, the lack of O2 production by benthic photosynthesis allowed the denitrification to occur closer to the sediment-water interface and was likely to enhance the release of N2O to the water. The daily averages for the emission were about 40 mol N2O–N m-2 d-1 for three investigation periods in autumn (November), winter (February) and spring (April), whereas no significant emission was recorded in the NO 3 - -depleted sediment in early summer (June). In this estuary, the N2O emissions from the sediment were significant contributions to the overall release of N2O to the atmosphere.  相似文献

A continuously recording, flow-through oxygen electrode system for the measurement of oxygen exchange is described and applied to an investigation of photosynthetic rates in the marine algae Fucus vesiculosus L. and Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lam. The photosynthetic rate (mg O2.g dry weight-1.h-1) at 15°C and 21.5 mW.cm-2 (usually just saturating) ranges in F. vesiculosus from 1.20 in basal portions of the thallus to 9.27 at the apices and in L. digitata from 1.19 mg O2 at the thallus base to 3.97 mg O2 at distances of several centimetres behind the upper thallus margin. This variation is reduced when the photosynthetic rate is expressed in terms of fresh weight or surface area. This research was carried out while one of us (R.J.K.) was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Kiel, and is part of the programme Sonderforschungsbereich 95, Wechselwirkung Meer-Meeresboden, Universität Kiel.  相似文献

Photoadaptations of zooxanthellae living within the deep water coral Leptoseris fragilis taken from the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea) were studied. Specimens-collected in summer 1988 between 110 and 120 m depth —were transplanted to 70 and 160 m. At each depth individuals were exposed in their natural growth position (oral side facing the surface) or in a reverse growth position (oral side facing the bottom). After 1 yr of exposure the corals were collected and the zooxanthellae were isolated. As a function of the availability of light with depth and growth position several algal parameters showed changes which are related to photoadaptations. The relatively low density of zooxanthellae of 0.15x106 cellsxcm-2 at a natural growth depth of 116 m decreased to 0.0034x106 cellsxcm-2 (2%) at 160 m in specimens growing with a natural orientation. In corals with a downward-facing oral surface at the same depth (160 m) only degenerated algae could be observed. With respect to depth dependence the volume of the algae decreased from 728 m3 at 116 m to 406 m3 at a depth of 160 m and the content of pigments increased. The augmentation of peridinin per cell was low (two times at 160 m compared to 116 m). Chlorophyll a and in particular chlorophyll c 2 concentrations per cell were enhanced. Compared to natural amounts at 116 m, chl a was five times and chl c 2 eight times higher at 160 m. At all depths the chl c 2 content per cell was higher than for chl a. The formation of chl a/chl c 2 complexes as light harvestor is discussed. Light harvesting, with chl c 2 prevailing may be explained as a special type of chromatic adaptation of L. fragilis in a double sense: (1) in the habitat light short wavelengths predominate. This light can be directly absorbed with pigments such as chl a and chl c 2. (2) Host pigments absorb visible violet light and transform these wavelengths, less suitable for photosynthesis, into longer ones by means of autofluorescence. The emitted longer wavelengths fit the absorption maxima of the algal pigments. Thus the host supports photosynthesis of his symbionts. Corals exposed at 160 m depth with a downward facing oral surface were alive after 1 yr and the host wavelength transforming pigment system was still present, but zooxanthellae were absent or degenerated. The light field at 160 m seems therefore to be critical: the combined photoadaptations of host and symbionts, allowing photosynthesis under barren light conditions, seem to be exhausted. In L. fragilis the photoadaptive strategies of host and symbionts cooperate harmoniously. In addition, the adaptations are interlocked with the particular light situation of the habitat with respect to light quantity and quality. The cooperation of physical and organismic parameters examplifies how evolution and, in particular, coevolution has led to optimal fitness.  相似文献

Adult Elasmopus rapax, collected from the eastern coast of Venezuela in 1990, were exposed to seawater containing various CdCl2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 5.5 mol l-1. The 48-h and 96-h LC50 values obtained were 4.0 and 1.6 mol Cd l-1, respectively. In amphipods exposed to 1 mol Cd l-1 for up to 240 h, the apparent rate of cadmium uptake was higher in dead animals (most of which had molted during the preceding 24 to 48 h) than in those which survived throughout the treatments without molting. Thus, whole-body cadmium content reached 1.74 mol g-1 dry weight (dw) in the former and only 0.85 mol g-1 dw in the latter; the higher body Cd-load may have caused the increased mortality observed in molters. On exposure to cadmium levels above 0.5 mol l-1 the oxygen consumption rate of non-molters decreased from 2.2 to about 1.5 ml O2 g-1 dw h-1 over the first 24 h, remaining unchanged thereafter. The results place E. rapax among the most sensitive marine organisms yet studied concerning cadmium toxicity, and emphasize the usefulness of the Amphipoda as bioindicators and research tools for bioassays.  相似文献

Rainwater concentrations of either ammonium or nitrate were sufficient to stimulate chlorophyll a (chl a) production in bioassay experiments using Gulf Stream surface water collected off North Carolina during the summer of 1991. Previous studies primarily examined inshore waters and did not address the impact of rainwater ammonium. An increase in chl a occurred within 1 d of the addition of synthetic rainwater (2 or 5% rainwater, 98 or 95% seawater) containing up to 10 M ammonium; this increase was followed by a decrease in chl a the following day. A similar response to nitrate addition (5% addition of 20 M nitrate rain) was observed. In separate experiments, natural rainwater having nitrate and ammonium concentrations less than those in the experimental synthetic rain yielded a greater chl a response than synthetic rain when added at similar dilutions (0.5 to 5.0% rain). The maximum dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration in the enriched seawater in these bioassays was 1.8 M; prior to enrichment the maximum was < 0.4 M. Bioassay experiments begun 2 d after a major storm event (sustained NE winds with gusts to 13 m s-1 and ca. 390 mol m-2 inorganic nitrogen deposition from rain) showed a chl a increase in response to addition of natural rainwater, but not to synthetic rainwater with similar dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration. These results suggest that phytoplankton stimulants, in addition to nitrate and ammonium, exist in natural rain but not in the synthetic rain used in these experiments.  相似文献

Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics were observed at all light intensities. With constant illumination, the Vmax and K1 in nitrate uptake over the natural light intensity range of 0 to 2000 E were 0.343 g-at NO3–N(g)-1 at protein-N h-1 and 26 E, respectively. Nitrate uptake was inhibited at higher light intensities. The Ks for nitrate uptake did not vary as a function of light intensity remaining relatively constant at 0.62 g-at NO3–N 1-1. With intermittent illumination, the Vmzx for light intensity in nitrate uptake over a light intensity range of 0 to 5000 E was 0.341 g-at NO3–N(g)-1-at protein-N h-1. No inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed at higher than natural light intensities. Chaetoceros curvisetus will probably never experience light inhibition of nitrate uptake under natural conditions.  相似文献

Dinitrogen fixation associated with bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of sea urchins appears to be a widespread phenomenon: sea urchins from the tropics (Diadema antillarum, Echinometra lacunter, Tripneustes ventricosus), the temperature zone (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and the arctic (S. droebachiensis) exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction). Pronounced seasonal variation was found in nitrogenase activity of temperate sea urchins feeding on kelp (Laminaria spp.) and eelgrass (Zostera marina). The mean monthly nitrogenase activity was inversely correlated with the nitrogen content of the sea urchin's food, which varied up to fivefold over the course of a year. The highest rate of nitrogenase activity recorded for a temperate sea urchin during the 14 month sampling period was 11.6g N fixed g wet wt-1 d-1, with a yearly mean activity of 1.36 g N fixed g wet wt-1 d-1. Studies with 15N confirmed the C2H2 reduction results and showed incorporation of microbially-fixed nitrogen into S. droebachiensis demonstrating that N2 fixation can be a source of N for the sea urchin. Laboratory experiments indicated that part of the sea urchin's (S. droebachiensis) normal gastrointestinal microflora is responsible for the observed nitrogenase activity.  相似文献

Aerobic nitrogenase activity in the marine non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. NIBB 1067, isolated off the Izu Peninsula, Japan in 1983 and grown under artificial conditions, was assayed by the acetylene reduction method. This strain exhibited acetylene reduction activity under aerobic conditions when cells had been grown in the medium free of combined nitrogen. Activity was markedly enhanced by light, and dependent on the growth phase being higher during the exponential growth phase and lower during the late linear and stationary growth phases. Since typical colony formation occurred during the last growth phase, the present results contradict the idea that N2-fixation depends on colony formation. The photosynthesis inhibitor DCMU at 10-6 M inhibited light-dependent acetylene reduction completely. Acetylene reduction by Trichodesmium spp. was tolerant of O2 as strongly as that in the heterocystous cyanobacteria. Even at a partial pressure of oxygen (pO 2) of 3 atm, the activity still remained as high as half of the maximum. It was almost under anaerobic conditions. Maximum activity was obtained at pO2 of ca. 0.1 atm.  相似文献

Primary production in Dumbell Bay in the Arctic Ocean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, inorganic nutrients, and related factors were measured throughout a productive season in a small coastal inlet of the Arctic Ocean. Significant production was confined to 5 m for a very limited time period beacause of both light and nutrient limitations. Maximum chlorophyll was 8.2 mg Chl a m-3 and maximum gross and net photosynthesis rates were 830 and 550 mg C m-2 d-1. Annual gross and net photosynthesis is estimated at about 12 and 9 g C m-2 respectively. The effect of light stimulation on assimilation is described, sources of coastal zone nutrient enrichment are considered, and discrepancies between gross and net photosynthesis are discussed with reference to the growth characteristics of the phytoplankton population.Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Metabolic rates of the ctenophore Beroe ovata within the length range from 0.4 mm (newly hatched larvae) to 60 mm were investigated. At 20° the respiration rates (Q, µg O2 ind.–1 h–1) of individuals with wet weights (W, mg) less than or greater than 100 mg changed according to the equations Q=0.093W0.62 and Q=0.016W0.99, respectively. The weight-specific respiration rate of the juvenile ctenophores with wet body weights of 0.021–100 mg diminished approximately 20-fold (from 0.35 to 0.017 µg O2 mg–1 h–1, respectively), but did not change within the range from 100 to 30,000 mg. The difference in the slope of the regression lines seems to be attributable to the ontogenetic changes in B. ovata metabolism. For the tested temperature range of 10–28°, the mean Q10 coefficient was equal to 2.17±0.5. The basal metabolism of B. ovata narcotised by chloral hydrate was 4.5±0.9 times lower than total metabolism. Such a metabolic range is considered to be characteristic of aquatic invertebrates with high levels of locomotory activity.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Vertical distribution of mesoplankton in the open area of the Black Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In April–May 1984 mesoplankton vertical distribution in the Black Sea was studied by sampling with a 150-l waterbottle, vertical plankton nets with mesh-sizes of 180 and 500 mkm and by direct counting of the jelly-fish Aurelia aurita, the ctenophore Pleurobrachia pileus, Calanus helgolandicus and the chaetognath Sagitta setosa from the manned submersible Argus. During daytime throughout the whole deep-water body of the sea near the lower oxycline boundary, plankton forms a layer of high concentration (from 2.5 to 38 g m-3); its thickness varies from 5 to 10–20 m and it has an unchangeable vertical structure; its upper portion is formed by the ctenophore P. pileus, its middle portion by V–VI copepodites of C. helgolandicus, and its lower portion by the population of S. setosa. The lower boundary of this layer coincides with 0.4 to 0.5 ml O2 l-1 isooxygen surface, and the depth of its location varies in different areas of the sea from 150 to 50 m, depending on the depth location of 0.5 ml O2 l-1 isooxygen surface. By night the animals, which form this layer, migrate towards the surface.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters for netplankton (>22 m) and nanoplankton (<22 m) varied over similar ranges but exhibited different seasonal and geographic patterns of variation. Nanoplankton a was relatively constant (0.06 mg C [mg Chl · h]-1 [E m-2 s-1]-1), but P m B (mg C [mg Chl · d]-1) was an exponential function of temperature independent of nutrient concentration and vertical stability in the euphotic zone. The temperature function gives a P m B of 24 at 25°C for nanoplankton growing in an estuarine environment characterized by high nutrient concentrations and a shallow, stratified euphotic zone. Variations in netplankton a and P m B were less predictable and were not correlated with temperature, nutrients or vertical stability. Chain forming diatoms with small cells were able to achieve high (0.10 to 0.15) and P m B (20 to 24) that were 3 to 5 times higher than large-celled diatoms and dinoflagellates were able to achieve.  相似文献

Macrofauna living on subtidal rocks reefs in southern California excrete ammonium, a potentially important nutrient for benthic algae. Ammonium excretion rates of eleven macroinvertebrate and five fish taxa were determined from a total of 324 in situ incubations conducted between October 1984 and August 1985 at 14 to 17 m depths off Santa Catalina Island, California. Total ammonium excretion ranged from over 100 mol h-1 by the kelp bass Paralabrax clathratus to less than 0.1 mol h-1 by the gastropod Conus californicus. Weight-specific ammonium excretion generally ranged from 0.5 to 4 mol g-1 h-1 in invertebrates and from 3 to 7 mol g-1 h-1 in fishes. Intraspecific excretion rates varied substantially. Coefficient of variation of excretion rates were higher than reported for laboratory studies and multiple regression indicated that 50 to 90% of the variation in ammonium excretion rates of five species studied in detail could not be explained by the combined variation in dry weight, water temperature, time of day, and incubation dates. The excretion data, along with estimates of population densities and size-frequency distributions, indicate that benthic macrofauna release a total of 25 to 30 mol NH 4 + m-2 h-1 both day and night. The species that generally make the largest contributions are a gobiid fish (Lythrypnus dalli), followed by three gastropods (Astraea undosa, Tegula eiseni, and T. aureotincta) and a sea urchin (Centrostephanus coronatus). The amount of ammonium excreted by these macrofauna on rocky reefs is insignificant compared to our previously published data on the nighttime excretion of blacksmith (Chromis punctipinnis), a pomacentrid fish that feeds in the water column during the day and shelters on the reef at night. Including blacksmiths, we estimate that the amount released by rocky-reef macrofauna at night is >280 mol m-2 h-1, a rate that is similar to that for many other marine communities. Additional studies are required to determine if benthic algae utilize ammonium released by these macrofauna, especially at night.Contribution No. 58 of the Ocean Studies Institute; Contribution No. 123 of the Catalina Marine Science Center  相似文献

Colonies of the temperate coral Astrangia danae occur naturally with and without zooxanthellae. Basal nitrogen excretion rates of nonsymbiotic colonies increased with increasing feeding frequency [average excretion rate was 635 ng-at N (mg-at tissue-N)-1 h-1]. Reduced excretion rates of symbiotic colonies were attributed to N uptake by the zooxanthellae. Nitrogen uptake rates of the zooxanthellae averaged 8 ng-at N (106 cells)-1 h-1 in the dark and 21 ng-at N (106 cells)-1 h-1 at 200 Ein m-2 s-1. At these rates the zooxanthellae could provide 54% of the daily basal N requirement of the coral if all of the recycled N was translocated. Basal respiration rates were 172 nmol O2 cm-2 h-1 for starved colonies and 447 nmol O2 cm-2 h-1 for colonies fed three times per week. There were no significant differences between respiration rates of symbiotic and nonsymbiotic colonies. N excretion and respiration rates of fed (symbiotic and nonsymbiotic) colonies increased greatly soon after feeding. N absorption efficiencies decreased with increasing feeding frequency. A N mass balance, constructed for hypothetical situations of nonsymbiotic and symbiotic (3×106 zooxanthellae cm-2) colonies, starved and fed 15 g-at N cm-2wk-1, showed that the presence of symbionts could double the N growth rate of feeding colonies, and reduce the turnover-time of starved ones, but could not provide all of the N requirements of starved colonies. Rates of secondary production, estimated from rates of photosynthesis and respiration were similar to those estimated for reef corals.  相似文献

Effect of algal bloom deposition on sediment respiration and fluxes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Using sediment cores collected in November 1989 from Aarhus Bight, Denmark, the fluxes of O2, CO2 (total CO2), NH 4 + , NO 3 +NO 2 and DON (dissolved organic nitrogen) across the sediment-water interface were followed for 20 d in an experimental continous flow system. On day 7, phytoplankton was added to the sediment surface, to see the result of simulated algal bloom sedimentation. Benthic O2 consumption and CO2 efflux, 38 to 41 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 and 25 to 30 mmol CO2 m-2 d-1, respectively, immediately increased by 39% and 100% after the algal addition, but gradually declined to the orginal level. Fluxes of NH 4 + (1.0 to 1.2 mmol m-2 d-1) and DON (0.3 to 0.9 mmol m-2 d-1) increased due to the organic substrate addition. NH 4 + and NO 3 flux changed direction, becoming an efflux and influx, respectively, for a few days and a large amount of DON (max. rate 4.0 mmol m-2 d-1) was immediately produced either by bacterial hydrolytic activity or from autolysis of the algae. DON was the most significant nitrogen component in pore water and in terms of N-flux from sediment. A temporary stimulation of anaerobic respiration processes (sulfate reduction and denitrification) and a decrease in nitrification were indicated. After the effect of the organic addition had declined, the fluxes gradually reverted to the original rates. The halflife of the added algal material, of which 20 to 30% was very labile, was estimated to be 2 to 3 wk.  相似文献
