Several household consumer products were analyzed for their content of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH) by nanoflow ultra performance liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. Among the investigated products, which are applied as sprays, were impregnating agents, cleaning agents, lubricants, and conditioners. In 14 of the 26 products analyzed, at least one polyfluorinated compound (PFC) was detected in 14 samples. 8?:?2 FTOH was the dominating PFC with concentrations up to 149?µg?mL?1. The maximum concentration of PFOA was 14.5?µg?mL?1, whereas PFOS was not detected in any sample. Investigated PFCs were mostly found in impregnating agents and lubricants, but were not detected in cleaning agents and conditioners. In FTOH-containing impregnating agents, similar ratios between 6?:?2 FTOH, 8?:?2 FTOH, and 10?:?2 FTOH were found. FTOH proportions in PFC-containing lubricants were similar as well. Total human exposure to PFC from consumer product aerosols for three different scenarios was estimated to be between 42.8 and 464?ng?kg?1?per day.  相似文献

The silica uptake of Halichondria panicea Pallas, 1766 was measured in laboratory experiments from February until August 1995. Uptake rates were determined by measuring the decrease of dissolved silica in the surrounding seawater. All specimens were collected in Kiel Bight and maintained in aquaria up to several weeks prior to the experiments. Up to 5.27 μmol Si g−1 AFDW h−1 were incorporated by the sponges, with a strong, size-independent individual variation. A positive correlation between the content of dissolved silica in the seawater and the silica uptake was found. Temperature had no decisive effect on uptake rates. The nutritional condition of the sponges turned out to be of great importance. After 1 wk of starvation, Halichondria panicea uptake rates were only 15% of the previous amount, which indicates that silica transport is an energy-consuming process. During the most intense phase of reproduction activity in spring, female specimens showed a significant drop in their silica uptake. Obviously they did not produce spicules during this time. An attempt to estimate the influence of H. panicea on its habitat as a consumer of dissolved silica led to the conclusion that in summer the sponges might affect the phytoplankton species composition by competing with diatoms for dissolved silica. We have discovered that HNO3 and related species are released from the TiO2 surface into air in the TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation of NO2 (1 ppm) under continuous UV light illumination (1 mW cm−2) by dehumidifying the outlet gas of the reaction and analyzing the recovered condensate liquid by ion chromatography. The origin of the HNO3 recovered in the dehumidifier could not be explained by a simple desorption of HNO3 overproduced on the TiO2 surface. The produced HNO3 must be activated on the TiO2 surface and causing the unidentified reaction.  相似文献

Populations of the sand dollars Encope grandis and Mellita grantii were studied at Playa Hermosa in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico. Intertidal distribution and abundance were estimated for the two species from 1969 to 1972. They occurred in the lower intertidal (-0.4 to -1.3 m) and on into the subtidal. Density of E. grandis varied from a high of 380/m2 in the spring of 1970 to a low of 0.1/m2 in the fall of 1971. Density of M. grantii ranged from a high of 56/m2 in 1970 to a low of 0.8/m2 in 1971. Growth curves were constructed based on shifts in the modes of the size distributions, and rates of mortality were estimated from the growth parameters and size distributions. It is estimated that E. grandis would attain 95% of its maximum size (74 mm) in about 6 years with an annual mortality rate of 18%. M. grantii would reach 95% of its maximum size (38 mm) in about 5 years with an annual mortality rate of 58%. The populations of these sand dollars appear to be limited by the physical environment.  相似文献

The photodegradation of 14C-benthiocarb in water, on a glass surface, on soil and silica gel TLC plates was studied. the study was designed to obtain some information of its dissipation and photodegradation under various laboratory conditions. Benthiocarb degrades readily when exposed to either sunlight or UV light (254 nm). However, it is degraded much faster by UV light than by sunlight. Also, benthiocarb decomposes faster in water or on a glass surface or silica gel surface than on a soil surface. the half-life of benthiocarb exposed to UV light was: 1 hr on glass surface; 1.5 hrs in water; 2 hrs on silica gel TLC plate; 20 hrs on soil TLC plate. Benthiocarb in water, and exposed to sunlight, had a half-life of approximately 3 days. the following major photodegradation products were identified: 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol; 4-chlorobenzaldehyde; 4-chlorobenzoic acid.  相似文献

This report shows that silica sulfate is removing phosphate from wastewater very efficiently. Phosphorus removal and recovery from wastewater is a worldwide issue due to pollution of natural waters by phosphate and depletion of phosphate ores. Adsorption is a process that can remove phosphate at low concentrations. Adsorption also allows the recovery of phosphate for possible re-use. Here, we studied the adsorption of phosphate from wastewater using commercial Zr ferrite, Zr-MCM 41 and silica sulfate. We calculated equilibrium isotherms, kinetic models and thermodynamic effects under conditions similar to real wastewaters. We found that the equilibrium data for the adsorption of phosphate were best fitted to the Freundlich model. The results show that the maximum uptake of phosphate was 3.36 mg g−1 for Zr-MCM, 27.73 mg g−1 for Zr ferrite and 46.32 mg g−1 for silica sulfate. The kinetic results of the three adsorbents were satisfactorily predicted using a pseudo-second-order model. We found that silica sulfate provided excellent characteristics in terms of the maximum adsorption and rate constant for the adsorption of phosphate. The thermodynamic data showed that increasing the temperature enhanced the adsorption of phosphate onto silica sulfate. Our findings will help to define efficient methods to remove phosphate from wastewater.  相似文献

Cassidulus caribbearum, a representative of the echinoid order Cassiduloida, occurs in localized populations of high densities (up to 100 m-2) among the islands of the Puerto Rico bank in the eastern Caribbean Sea. These small (up to 35 mm) urchins are burrowers, principally in shallow-water areas with coarse sand bottom. Locomotion is achieved by ditaxic waves, passing from the front to the rear of large movable spines on the lateral portions of the ventral surface; this mechanism is unique among echinoids. Digging was most effective in sand grain sizes most closely approximating those of the environment (0 to 1). These urchins are somewhat selective deposit feeders, which ingest substrate particles primarily in the size range 0 to 1. Individuals ingest sand more or less continuously; complete passage of sand through the gut takes an average of 6 h in the laboratory. Aristotle's lantern is present in young juveniles (test length <1.0 mm), but is resorbed before the urchins reach a test length of 5.0 mm. The gut shows similarities in gross morphology to the spatangoid gut. Oxygen consumption is comparable to that of other tropical echinoids of similar wet weight. C. caribbearum broods its large (350 m) yolky eggs among the aboral spines for 10 to 12 days, at which time young urchins crawl off into the sand. Successive, overlapping broods are produced, so that frequently two broods of different developmental stages are present on a single urchin. Single urchins may brood continuously for up to 4 months or more. Throughout the year, at least 50% of all individuals over 18 mm were found brooding, with a maximum of 85% of all individuals brooding in mid-summer. The sex ratio of the population in all areas sampled was greater than 5 females to 1 male. No evidence of protandric hermaphroditism was found. Growth rate, measured from tagged indivuduals and from increase in median size in population samples, was between 0.5 and 1.0 mm month-1. Mortality was due primarily to predation by the gastropod Cassis tuberosa, although occasional, episodic mortality was caused by physical factors such as heavy storm swells.  相似文献

Mercury adsorption by silica and maghemite nanoparticles (NPs) was studied with the aim of comparing their performance in the remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) contaminated water. Calculated distribution coefficients (Kd) showed that both NPs are exceptional adsorbents. However, adsorbate coverage per unit area was 30 times higher for maghemite than for silica NPs, despite the latter having a surface area ~15 times greater. Maghemite adsorbed 75% of available Hg compared to 56% by silica, making it a more efficient sorbent than silica under AMD conditions. Kinetics and isotherm data for both adsorbents were fitted by the pseudo-second-order (R2 = 1) and the Freundlich (R2 ≥ 0.98) models, implying that adsorption to both NP types was by chemisorption. Adsorption increased with NP concentrations and pH and was enhanced in the presence of manganese and sulfate ions although adsorption to silica was inhibited in 1:2 Hg-to-Mn systems. Importantly, trends in simulated wastewater were replicated in actual AMD-contaminated water samples. This study highlights the fact that properties besides surface area and charge of adsorbents determine adsorbent performance, and superior attributes may not always lead to higher adsorption efficiencies.  相似文献

Lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis of Pseudocentrotus depressus and Anthocidaris crassispina, two commercially important sea urchin species in Japan, were isolated from the foliose coralline red alga Corallina pilulifera (collected in 1990 near Saga, Japan) and identified. Larval assays of the fractions obtained by silica gel column chromatography of the total lipids showed that non-polar groups of lipids were effective at inducing larval settlement and metamorphosis. The effective fractions were further subjected to gel filtration (Sephadex LH-20) and also to silica gel column chromatography, and the effective components isolated as single spots by thin-layer chromatography. The components at a concentration of ca. 0.4 mg paper-1 (sample was adsorbed on a paper with 20 cm2) induced high rates of larval settlement of both P. depressus and A. crassispina. Chemical analyses of the components revealed a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs), dominated by eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5, 41 to 50%), palmitic acid (16:0, 11 to 17%), arachidonic acid (20:4, 9 to 15%), and palmitoleic acid (16:1, 4 to 5%). In assays with the four standard FFAs, only 20:4 and 20:5 induced larval settlement and metamorphosis of the two species, while 16:0 and 16:1 were ineffective. The larvae underwent significant rates of settlement and metamorphosis in response to the two former FFAs at levels as low as 0.18 mg paper-1. Amongst the free fatty acid components of the alga, 20:5 was isolated as the chemical inducer of larval settlement and metamorphosis of the sea urchins in the laboratory.  相似文献

First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism of Hg0 adsorption and oxidation on CeO2(111). Surface oxygen activated by the reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ was vital to Hg0 adsorption and oxidation processes. Hg0 was fully oxidized by the surface lattice oxygen on CeO2(111), without using any other oxidizing agents. HCl could dissociate and react with the Hg adatom on CeO2(111) to form adsorbed Hg–Cl or Cl–Hg–Cl groups, which promoted the desorption of oxidized Hg and prevented CeO2 catalyst deactivation. In contrast, O–H and H–O–H groups formed during HCl adsorption consumed the active surface oxygen and prohibited Hg oxidation. The consumed surface oxygen was replenished by adding O2 into the flue gas. We proposed that oxidized Hg desorption and maintenance of sufficient active surface oxygen were the rate-determining steps of Hg0 removal on CeO2-based catalysts. We believe that our thorough understanding and new insights into the mechanism of the Hg0 removal process will help provide guidelines for developing novel CeO2-based catalysts and enhance the Hg0 removal efficiency.

A series of hierarchical macro-/mesoporous silica supports (MMSs) were successfully synthesized using dual-templating technique employing polystyrene (PS) spheres and the Pluronic P123 surfactant. Pd was next loaded on the hierarchical silica supports via colloids precipitation method. Physicochemical properties of the synthesized samples were characterized by various techniques and all catalysts were tested for the total oxidation of o-xylene. Among them, the Pd/MMS-b catalyst with tetraethoxysilane/polystyrene weight ratio of 1.0 exhibited superior catalytic activity, and under a higher gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 70000 h–1, the 90% conversion of o-xylene has been obtained at around 200°C. The BET and SEM results indicated that Pd/MMSb catalyst possesses high surface area and large pore volume, and well-ordered, interconnected macropores and 2D hexagonally mesopores hybrid network. This novel ordered hierarchical porous structure was highly beneficial to the dispersion of active sites Pd nanoparticles with less aggregation, and facilitates diffusion of reactants and products. Furthermore, the Pd/MMS-b catalyst possessed good stability and durability.  相似文献

This study was carried out between January and March 1995 on the intertidal sand flats of Tang Khen Bay, Phuket, South Thailand, where the soldier crab Dotilla myctiroides (H. Milne-Edwards) occurs in densities of up to 120 m−2. In this bay, long, ribbon-like sand waves (wavelength 40 m, height 0.4 m) are interspersed with shallow pools, running approximately parallel to the shore. During daylight low-tides, exposure of the sand waves is followed 15 to 20 min later by the emergence of the crabs which have been buried under the sediment surface during high tide. Their subsequent burrowing and feeding activity results in the production of large numbers of sand pellets on the sediment surface. Most crabs retreat down their burrows, and some also plug the burrow entrance, prior to being covered by the incoming tide. The crab burrows have a distinct distribution on the sand waves. Burrows are most dense at the top of each sand wave, and a band of unburrowed sediment adjoins the adjacent tidal pools. Crabs are most abundant between mean high-water neap-tide level and mean low-water neap-tide level, where the median particle size of the surface sediment is ∼2 . Measurements of water-table depth below the sand waves and the exposure time of the sediment indicated that, where sediment size is suitable, the main factor controlling crab distribution is the duration of daytime exposure. This observation is in contrast to those of many previous studies, which have suggested that water-table height and sediment drainage are the main factors controlling the distribution of D. myctiroides. The vertical and spatial concentration trends of biogenic silica (BSi) were investigated in a variety of sediment types from the Gulf of Riga. These trends were compared with the concentration of organic carbon to examine how variations in the mass sedimentation and the dissolution rate of BSi versus bacterially mediated oxidation of organic matter affect the distribution of BSi in different environments. The effects of important physical and biogeochemical factors on the distribution of BSi have also been examined.

The concentration of BSi in the surface sediment at accumulation bottoms ranges between 0.8–1.5 mmol/g with an average concentration of 1.1 mmol/g. This is about two times the concentration that has been reported in similar sediments in the open Baltic proper. Much lower concentrations were measured in erosion and transitional areas; on average around 0.2 and 0.6 mmol/g, respectively.

A comparison between recent sedimentation rate measurements (210Pb) and concentrations of BSi within different accumulation bottoms suggests an approximate inverse relationship with each other. The importance of variation in the sedimentation rate on the surface BSi concentration is supported by the fact that higher Corg/BSi ratios are found in periphery accumulation zones close to transition areas (larger supply of carbon rich allochthonous material that dilutes settled amounts of BSi) than at accumulation bottoms in the central part of the Gulf. The Corg/BSi ratio in the sediment is always lower than in living siliceous algae which shows that the microbial degradation of organic carbon is always greater than the inorganic dissolution of BSi, irrespective of the assemblage of silica and non‐silica species.

The general vertical concentration pattern at accumulation sites showed a decreased concentration with increased depth down to 2–6 cm below seafloor where the concentration gradually equalizes. The concentration in the equalizing zone is on average about 20% lower than in the uppermost centimeter. This implies that the main part of the BSi entering the accumulation bottoms is permanently buried and that a great amount of silica already has been released during halmyrolysis. The spatial and vertical BSi trends at sites in transitional and erosional areas reflects prevailing sedimentation conditions with a low concentration in sections with a dominance of sand and gravel (no deposition of fine material) and a higher concentration in the sections containing stiff glacial clay (former accumulation area).

The average annual burial amount of BSi in the Gulf has been estimated to be around 50 000 tons of which most is buried in accumulation bottoms outside the central muddy part of the Gulf. The buried amount is about 60% of the annual river load of silica.  相似文献

A long-term pilot-scale H2-based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) was tested for removal of nitrate from actual groundwater. A key feature of this second-generation pilot MBfR is that it employed lower cost polyester hollow fibers and still achieved high loading rate. The steady-state maximum nitrate surface loading at which the effluent nitrate and nitrite concentrations were below the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) was at least 5.9 g·N·(m2·d)?1, which corresponds to a maximum volumetric loading of at least 7.7 kg·N·(m3·d) ?1. The steady-state maximum nitrate surface area loading was higher than the highest nitrate surface loading reported in the first-generation MBfRs using composite fibers (2.6 g·N·(m2·d)?1). This work also evaluated the H2-utilization efficiency in MBfR. The measured H2 supply rate was only slightly higher than the stoichiometric H2-utilization rate. Thus, H2 utilization was controlled by diffusion and was close to 100% efficiency, as long as biofilm accumulated on the polyester-fiber surface and the fibers had no leaks.  相似文献

This study described the use of clay impregnated by KI in gas phase elemental mercury (Hgo) removal in flue gas. The effects of KI loading, temperature, O2, SO2 and H2O on Hgo removal were investigated using a fixed bed reactor. The Hgo removal efficiency of KI-clay with 3% KI loading could maintain at a high level (approximately 80 %) after 3 h. The KI-clay demonstrated to be a potential adsorbent for Hgo removal when compared with activated carbon based adsorbent. O2 was found to be an important factor in improving the Hgo removal. O2 was demonstrated to assist the transfer of KI to I2 on the surface of KI-clay, which could react with Hgo directly. NO and SO2 could slightly improve Hgo removal, while H2O inhibited it greatly. The results indicated that after adsorption, most of the mercury escaped from the surface again. Some of the mercury may have been oxidized as it left the surface. The results demonstrated that the chemical reaction primarily occurred between KI and mercury on the surface of the KI-clay.  相似文献

The occurrence of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in marine sinking particles was investigated. Sinking particles were collected in 1991 using sediment traps in the coastal area of Aburatsubo Inlet, Japan. TTX and related substances were analyzed by tissue culture bioassay, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). TTX and related substances were detected from six samples. The concentrations were estimated to be ca. 200 to 1000 ng g-1 by the HPLC analyses. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the occurrence of TTX in particles in an aquatic environment. The present results indicate that sinking particles are one of the sources of TTX in the marine environment and that these particles play a role in the toxification of marine organisms.  相似文献

Rates and direction of movement in the sand dollar Peronella lesueuri were measured in summer and winter in Cockburn Sound, a large coastal embayment in south-western Australia. P. lesueuri was found to have a diurnal activity pattern throughout the year and had a greater movement rate in the summer (mean of 5.3 cm h?1, day; 3.9 cm h?1, night) than in the winter (mean of 2.7 cm h?1, day; 2.0 cm h?1, night). Seasonal change in temperature and physiological requirements by the sand dollar are the most likely reason for the seasonal differences. Reasons for diurnal variation were not clear. Direction of movement was found to be random at both times of the year. Based on these movement rates, one sand dollar can bioturbate an approximate area of 0.1 m2 day?1 and 36.4 m2 year?1. At a conservative density estimate of 0.5 sand dollars per m2 it takes approximately 20 days for the sand dollars to rework the entire area of the sediments in the habitats they occupy.  相似文献

A simple, quantitative density separation method is described. The method is based on differences in specific weight between meiobenthos and sediment. Nematodes and copepods could be separated from sediment and detritus when samples were suspended in Ludox-TM, a colloidal silica. Organisms float at the surface, while sediment particles sink. Results obtained with this new method were compared with the well-known decantation method. For a quantitative isolation of nematodes from sediments, rich in coarse detritus, a maximum volume of 7 cm3 sample could be used. For copepods this maximum was 13 cm3. For such sediments the density method is more reliable than the decantation method. The time needed for sorting the meiobenthic organisms is reduced to about 30% compared with the former method. The new method can be used for preserved as well as for fresh sediment samples and can also be applied for the disolation of small polychaetes, small oligochaetes, larvae of some macrofaunal groups and net-zooplankton.Publication No. 10 of the project Biological Research in the Ems-Dollard Estuary.  相似文献

The concentrations and flux of CO2, 222Radon (Rn), and gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) in soil gas were investigated based on the field measurements in June 2010 at ten sites along the seismic rupture zones produced by the May 12, 2008, Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake in order to assess the environmental impact of degassing of CO2, Rn and Hg. Soil gas concentrations of 344 sampling points were obtained. Seventy measurements of CO2, Rn and Hg flux by the static accumulation chamber method were performed. The results of risk assessment of CO2, Rn and Hg concentration in soil gas showed that (1) the concentration of CO2 in the epicenter of Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake and north end of seismic ruptures had low risk of asphyxia; (2) the concentrations of Rn in the north segment of seismic ruptures had high levels of radon, Maximum was up to level 4, according to Chinese code (GB 50325-2001); (3) the average geoaccumulation index I geo of soil Hg denoted the lack of soil contamination, and maximum values classified the soil gas as moderately to strongly polluted in the epicenter. The investigation of soil gas CO2, Rn and Hg degassing rate indicated that (1) the CO2 in soil gas was characterized by a mean \(\updelta^{13}C_{CO2}\) of ?20.4 ‰ and by a mean CO2 flux of 88.1 g m?2 day?1, which were in the range of the typical values for biologic CO2 degassing. The maximum of soil CO2 flux reached values of 399 g m?2 day?1 in the epicenter; (2) the soil Rn had higher exhalation in the north segment of seismic ruptures, the maximum reached value of 1976 m Bq m?2 s?1; (3) the soil Hg flux was lower, ranging from ?2.5 to 18.7 n g m?2 h?1 and increased from south to north. The mean flux over the all profiles was 4.2 n g m?2 h?1. The total output of CO2 and Hg degassing estimated along seismic ruptures for a survey area of 18.17 km2 were approximately 0.57 Mt year?1 and 688.19 g year?1. It is recommended that land-use planners should incorporate soil gas and/or gas flux measurements in the environmental assessment of areas of possible risk. A survey of all houses along seismic ruptures is advised as structural measures to prevent the ingress of soil gases, including CO2 and Rn, were needed in some houses.  相似文献

The population of species Corophium urdaibaiense has been studied for a year in the Urdaibai estuary (NE Spain). The new species is characterised by its preference for muddy sand sediments (15% of mud) and the long body size (with a maximum length of 10.24 mm). The maximum abundance occurs in November (11,600 ind m−2); it almost disappears at the end of spring. The juveniles represent 79% of the population and the recruitment is concentrated within the October–December period. The breeding period begins in May, when the temperature is above 15°C, and it ceases in November, when the temperature is below 15°C. Bivoltinism is probable, taking into account the latitude (43°), temperature range (12–25°C) and breeding period (May and August–October), but the data are not sufficiently consistent to confirm the hypothesis. The production ranges from 2.93 to 5.85 g m−2 year−1, considering one and two generations per year, respectively. Some aspects concerning the food availability, predation and intraspecific competition could have an influence on the dynamics of the population and are discussed.  相似文献
