This paper builds on the preceding researches to study the effects of the type of clays (montmorillonites K10, KSF) and modifying conditions on the structure and adsorption behavior of resulting clay adsorbents. The raw clays were modified by polymeric Al/Fe species, hexadecyl-trimethylammonium (HDTMA) surfactant and a complex of polymeric Al/Fe-HDTMA. X-ray diffraction spectra was applied to analyze the structure of the raw and modified clays. After modification, the basal spacing of the clays varied, depending on the types of raw clay and modification conditions. Copper and phenol were selected as adsorbates for evaluating the adsorption performance of various clays, which was affected significantly by the types of raw clay and modification conditions. In general the inorganic contaminant (e.g., Cu) tend to be adsorbed by the polymeric Al/Fe modified clay and the organic impurities (e.g., phenol) will be preferably captured by the surfactant modified clay; both due to the specific surface properties resulting from introducing the modifiers. The complex modified clays possessed the ability of adsorbing both inorganic and organic contaminants. In addition, the d 0 0 1 spacing of modified KSF was greater than that of K10; the adsorption performance with modified KSF was thus greater than that with the modified K10. Finally, the ratio of modifiers to the clay (metal:surfactant:clay) has been observed to affect the adsorption performance; the optimal conditions have been defined.  相似文献

Reliable predictions of the fate and behaviour of pesticides in soils is dependent on the use of accurate ‘equilibrium’ sorption constants and/or rate coefficients. However, the sensitivity of these parameters to changes in the physicochemical characteristics of soil solids and interstitial solutions remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the effects of soil organic matter content, particle size distribution, dissolved organic matter and the presence of crop residues (wheat straw and ash) on the sorption of the herbicides atrazine and isoproturon by a clay soil. Sorption Kd's derived from batch ‘equilibrium’ studies for both atrazine and isoproturon by <2 mm clay soil were approximately 3.5 L/kg. The similarity of Koc's for isoproturon sorption by the <2 mm clay soil and <2 mm clay soil oxidised with hydrogen peroxide suggested that the sorption of this herbicide was strongly influenced by soil organic matter. By contrast, Koc's for atrazine sorption by oxidised soil were three times greater than those for <2 mm soil, indicating that the soil mineral components might have affected sorption of this herbicide. No significant differences between the sorption of either herbicide by <2 mm clay soil and (i) <250 μm clay soil, (ii) clay soil mixed with wheat straw or ash at ratios similar to those observed under field conditions, (iii) <2 mm clay soil in the presence of dissolved organic matter as opposed to organic free water, were observed.  相似文献

A series of regeneration experiments with physical activation were carried out on bleaching earth waste from the soybean refining process in a rotary reactor. The influence of activation parameters on the spent clay by varying the holding time of 1 to approximately 4 hours and temperature of 700 to approximately 900 degrees C was determined. The variations of pore properties as well as the change of chemical characteristics in the resulting solids were also studied. Results showed that the resulting samples were type IV with hysteresis loops corresponding to type H3 from nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, indicating slit-shaped mesoporous characteristics. However, the regenerated clays had smaller surface areas (70 to approximately 117 m2/g) than that (245 m2/g) of fresh bleaching earth. Under the physical activation conditions investigated, the holding time of 1 hour and temperature of 700 degrees C were found to be optimal conditions for producing mesoporous clay with physical activation. The adsorption of paraquat on regenerated sample was also evaluated. The isotherm showed that the regenerated sample still had a high affinity for this herbicide. Thus, the regeneration of this agro-industrial waste is one option for utilizing the clay resource, and it may be used for water treatment applications to remove organic contaminants.  相似文献

Surface charges play a major role in determining the interactions of contaminants with soils. The most important sources of soil charges are clay mineral colloids, whose electrochemical properties are usually modified by metal-oxides and organic matter in natural environments. In this study, effects of coatings of organic matter and Fe- and Al-oxides on a series of electrochemical properties and heavy metal sorption of three clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite) predominant in natural soils were investigated using batch techniques. The results indicate that the coatings increased the specific surface area of the clay minerals, except for the Al-oxide coated montmorillonite and organic matter coated 2:1 clay minerals. The sesquioxide coatings increased amount of positive charges but decreased negative charges. This causes great reduction of the negative potential on the clay surfaces, shift of the zero point of charge to a higher pH, and promotion of fluoride sorption due to presence of more OH- and OH2 on the oxide surfaces than on the clay surfaces. In contrast, the organic coating significantly increased the negativity of surface charges, and thus the zero point of charge and zeta-potential of the clays dropped down. The organic coating also induced a reduction of fluoride sorption on the clays. With respect to the sorption of lead and cadmium, the sesquioxide coatings produced insignificant effects. The experiments of lead/cadmium competitive sorption show that on both the oxide-coated surface and the original clay surface there exist different types of sites, each of which preferentially binds with a heavy metal.  相似文献

The results presented in this paper show an impact of the concentration of the aromatic organic cation on the adsorption of acetochlor on the surface of the organic-modified montmorillonite. Natural montmorillonite from Bogovina (Boljevac municipality, Serbia) was used for organic modification in this experiment. Cation exchange capacity of this montmorillonite (86 mmol 100 g?1 of clay) was determined using the methylene blue method. In pretreatment, montmorillonite was modified with NaCl. For the purpose of organic modification, three different concentrations of phenyltrimethylammonium chloride (PTMA) have been selected, based on calculated CEC value: 43 mmol 100 g?1 of clay (0.5 CEC), 86 mmol 100 g?1 of clay (1 CEC) and 129 mmol 100 g?1 of clay (1.5 CEC). The changes in the properties of the inorganic and organic modified montmorillonite were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and batch equilibrium method. Freundlich coefficients show higher uptake of the herbicide by montmorillonite modified with PTMA, compared to inorganic-modified montmorillonite. The results also indicate the influence of the organic cation concentration on the adsorption of the selected herbicide.  相似文献

Processed ball clays commonly used by the ceramic art industry in the United States were collected from retail suppliers and analyzed for the presence and concentration of the 2,3,7,8-Cl substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs). The average PCDD toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations of these processed ball clays was approximately 800 pg/g (TEQ-WHO) with characteristic congener profiles and isomer distributions similar to patterns of previously analyzed raw and processed ball clays. The PCDF concentrations were below the average limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 pg/g. Correlation analyses reveal no significant relationship between total organic carbon (TOC) and either individual, homologues, and total tetra-through octa-chlorinated PCDD congeners, or TEQ concentrations of the processed ball clays. The results are consistent with earlier studies on levels of PCDDs in ball clays. Data from earlier studies indicated that dioxins may be released to the environment during the processing of raw clay or the firing process used in commercial ceramic facilities. The presence of dioxin in the clays also raises concerns about potential occupational exposure for individuals involved in the mining/processing of ball clay, ceramics manufacturing and ceramic artwork.  相似文献

The sorption of herbicides in soils is mainly influenced by clay components. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the contribution of clay components on paraquat sorption. The surface soils (0-20 cm) of a Laopi pedon (Fine, mixed, Hyperthermic Typic Hapludox) were separated clays into whole (< 2.0 microm), coarse (0.2-2.0 microm), and fine (< 0.2 microm) fractions with the treatments of removals of organic matter (OM) and free Fe (Fed) oxides. Results indicated that sorption isotherm of paraquat was fitted by the nonlinear Freundlich equation with R2 values ranged in 0.79-0.96, respectively. The shape of paraquat adsorption isotherm on the fine fraction was H-type, but their shapes on the whole and coarse fractions were L-types. The fine clay fractions gave higher contribution on paraquat sorption than the coarse clay fractions identified by their K(f) values. Organic matter associated with fine clay fraction had high CEC contributing to relatively high affinity for paraquat. The DCB treatment created high-affinity sites for paraquat on the fine clay, but had little effect on paraquat sorption for the coarse clay. Chemisorption is the major mechanism for retention of paraquat on clay components, not ion exchange. However, the silicate clay had the highest affinity for paraquat and free Fe compound had the lowest.  相似文献

Using the soil-water sorption partitioning coefficient (Kd), this study quantified the spatial variation of 2,4-D sorption by soil in an undulating-to-hummocky terrain landscape near Minnedosa, MB, Canada. Herbicide sorption was most strongly related to soil organic matter content and slope position, with greatest sorption occurring in lower landscape positions with greater soil organic matter content. The relation between sorption and slope position was more pronounced under conventional tillage (CT) than under long-term zero-tillage (ZT). Using multivariate regression and three independent variables (soil organic matter content, soil clay content and soil pH), the prediction of herbicide sorption by soil was very good for CT (R2 = 0.89) and adequately for ZT (R2 = 0.53).  相似文献

Pesticides and other organic species are adsorbed by soil via different mechanisms, with bond strengths that depend on the properties of both the soil and the pesticide. Since the clay fraction in soil is a preferential sorbent for organic matter, reference kaolinite and montmorillonite are useful models for studying the mechanism and the strength of sorption. This paper presents the results of batch experiments to investigate the interactions of kaolinite KGa-1 and montmorillonite SWy-1 with the following pesticides and organic species resulting from the natural degradation of pesticides in the environment: atrazine (1-chloro-3-ethylamino-5-isopropylamino-2,4,6-triazine), simazine (1-chloro-3,5-bisethylamino-2,4,6-triazine), diuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea], aniline, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Each of these chemicals has different hydrophilicity. Systems containing 2.0 g of clay were put in contact with 100.0 mL of solutions of the pesticides at known concentration ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/L, and the amount of solute adsorbed was evaluated through RP-HPLC analysis of the pesticide still present in the aqueous suspension. To test for electrostatic interactions between the clay surface and the pesticides, potentiometric titration was used to determine the permanent surface charge of clays. Experiments were performed at different pH values. The results indicate that, for the chemicals studied, neutral molecules are preferentially retained relative to ionized ones, and that montmorillonite is a more effective sorbent than kaolinite.  相似文献

Arsenic (As) contaminated aquifers contain iron minerals and clays that strongly bind As at their surfaces. It was suggested that As mobilization is driven by natural organic matter (including fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA)) present in the aquifers either via providing reducing equivalents for reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (hydr)oxides or via competitive desorption of As from the mineral surfaces. In the present study we quantified sorption of As(III) and As(V) to Ca(2+)-homoionized illite (IL) and to kaolinite (Kao) as well as to HA-coated clays, i.e., illite-HA (IL-HA) and kaolinite-HA (Kao-HA) at neutral pH. Clay-HA complexes sorbed 28-50% more As than clay-only systems upon addition of 100μM As(III)/As(V) to 0.5g of clay or HA-clay with Ca(2+) probably playing an important role for HA binding to the clay surface and As binding to the HA. When comparing sorption of As(V) and As(III) to clay and HA-clay complexes, As(V) sorption was generally higher by 15-32% than sorption of As(III) to the same complexes. IL and IL-HA sorbed 11-28% and 6-11% more As compared to Kao and Kao-HA, respectively. In a second step, we then followed desorption of As from Kao, Kao-HA, IL and IL-HA by 100 and 500μM phosphate or silicate both at high (0.41-0.77μmol As/g clay), and low (0.04 to 0.05μmol As/g clay) As loadings. Phosphate desorbed As to a larger extent than silicate regardless of the amount of As loaded to clay minerals, both in the presence and absence of HA, and both for illite and kaolinite. At high loadings of As, the desorption of both redox species of As from clay-HA complexes by phosphate/silicate ranged from 32 to 72% compared to 2-54% in clay only systems meaning that As was desorbed to a larger extent from HA-coated clays compared to clay only systems. When comparing As(III) desorption by phosphate/silicate to As(V) desorption in high As-loading systems, there was no clear trend for which As species is desorbed to a higher extent in the four clay systems meaning that both As species behave similarly regarding desorption from clay surfaces by phosphate/silicate. Similarly, no significant differences were found in high As-loading systems in the amount of As desorbed by phosphate/silicate when comparing Kao vs. IL and Kao-HA vs IL-HA systems meaning that both clay types behave similarly regarding desorption of As by phosphate/silicate. At low As loadings, up to 80% of As was desorbed by phosphate and silicate with no noticeable differences being observed between different As species, different types of clay, clay vs clay-HA or the type of desorbant (phosphate and silicate). The results of this study showed that HA sorption to Ca(2+)-homoionized clay minerals can increase As binding to the clay although the As sorbed to the clay-HA is also released to a greater extent by competing ions such as phosphate and silicate. Desorption of As depended on the initial loadings of As onto the clay/clay-HA. Based on our results, the effect of humic substances on sorption of As and on desorption of As by phosphate and silicate has to be considered in order to fully understand and evaluate the environmental behavior of As in natural environments.  相似文献

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) are anionic high production volume surfactants used in the manufacture of cleaning products. Here, we have studied the effect of the characteristics of marine and estuarine sediments on the sorption of LAS. Sorption experiments were performed with single sediment materials (pure clays and sea sand), with sediments treated to reduce their organic carbon content, and with field marine and estuarine sediments. C12-2-LAS was used as a model compound. Sorption to the clays montmorillonite and kaolinite resulted in non-linear isotherms very similar for both clays. When reducing the organic content, sorption coefficients decreased proportionally to the fraction removed in fine grain sediments but this was not the case for the sandy sediment. The correlation of the sediment characteristics with the sorption coefficients at different surfactant concentrations showed that at concentrations below 10 μg C12-2-LAS/L, the clay content correlated better with sorption, while the organic fraction became more significant at higher concentrations.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine the impact of the organic complex concentration on the adsorption of herbicide (acetochlor) at the surface of the organic modified montmorillonite. In this work, natural montmorillonite from Bogovina (Boljevac municipality, Serbia) was used for organic modification. Cation-exchange capacity of this montmorillonite was determined using a methylene blue method (86 mmol/100 g of clay). Montmorillonite has been modified first with NaCl and then with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-bromide) organic complex. Saturation of cation exchange capacity (CEC) was 50%, 100%, and 150%. Changes in the properties of the inorganic and organic montmorillonite have been examined using the X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and batch equilibrium method. Montmorillonite modified with HDTMA-bromide demonstrated higher uptake of the herbicide, compared to the inorganic montmorillonite. Comparing the values Freundlich coefficients in batch equilibrium method, it can be seen that the adsorption of acetochlor decreased in the series: 0.5 CEC HM > 1 CEC HM > 1.5 CEC HM > NaM.  相似文献

The picloram (PCM) adsorption on nontronite, illite and kaolinite was studied at pH 3, 5 and 7. The adsorption isotherms had well-fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models equations. The interactions of PCM with the clay mineral surfaces exhibited an anionic profile adsorption, with a decrease in adsorption when the pH increases. The PCM adsorption capacity increases in the following order: kaolinite?<?illite?<?nontronite. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of PCM-clay samples revealed that the picloram molecule does not enter into the clays basal space. The interaction of PCM with clays surface sites through nitrogen of the pyridine ring was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Due to the anionic form of PCM, the adsorption onto the external and edges surface sites of the clay minerals was proposed.  相似文献

Pyrene and phenanthrene degradation was examined in both single and binary slurry systems for three different natural soils. It was found that the amount of total expandable clays (smectite and vermiculite) was in a good agreement with the achieved rate and extent of biodegradation. For instance, the intrinsic phenanthrene biodegradation rate was 626 microg/L/day for the soil with the largest expandable clay and 3203 microg/L/day for the soil with the least. Similarly, the smallest total pyrene biodegradation (65%) was found for the soil rich in expandable clays, compared to an 82% pyrene reduction in the soil that had the lowest amount. Mass transfer limitation after compound sorption to the clays was more pronounced for the more hydrophobic pyrene. In the presence of phenanthrene, total pyrene biodegradation increased by 2 to 7% due to cometabolism, while the total phenanthrene biodegradation was only enhanced by 0.5 to 5% in the binary system. This research demonstrated that expandable clays might govern the substrate availability to microorganisms and microbial accessibility to substrates. Therefore, the contribution of organic matter and expandable clays to sorption, desorption and biodegradation should be taken equally into account in order to better understand complex bioremediation issues.  相似文献

A porous clay heterostructure (PCH) from a Mexican clay was prepared and characterized, and its aqueous phenol and dichlorophenols (DCPs) adsorption capacities were studied using a batch equilibrium technique. The PCH displayed a surface area of 305.5 m2/g, 37.2 A average porous diameter, and a basal space of 23.2 A. The adsorption capacity shown by the PCH for both phenol and DCPs from water (14.5 mg/g for phenol; 48.7 mg/g for 3,4-DCP; and 45.5 mg/g for 2,5-DCP) suggests that the PCH has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics, as a result of the presence of silanol and siloxane groups formed during the pillaring and calcination of the PCH. The values of maximal adsorption capacity for dichlorophenols were higher than those reported for aluminum pillared clays and some inorgano-organo clays and comparable with some ionic exchange resins.  相似文献

The influence of soil and sediment composition on sorption and photodegradation of the herbicide napropamide [N,N-diethyl-2-(1-naphthyloxy)propionamide] was investigated. Five soils and one sediment were selected for this study and the clay fractions were obtained by sedimentation. Sorption-desorption was studied by batch equilibration technique and photolysis in a photoreactor emitting within 300-450 nm wavelength with a maximum at 365 nm. Sorption increased with clay content and was not related to organic matter content. High irreversibility of sorption was related to the greater montmorillonite content. The presence of soil or sediment reduced photolysis rate due to screen effect and this process did not depend on solid composition but on particle size distribution.  相似文献

The fate of pesticides in the environment is strongly related to the soil sorption processes that control not only their transfer but also their bioavailability. Cationic (Ca-bentonite) and anionic (Layered Double Hydroxide) clays behave towards the ionisable pesticide atrazine (AT) sorption with opposite tendencies: a noticeable sorption capacity for the first whereas the highly hydrophilic LDH showed no interactions with AT. These clays were modified with different humic acid (HA) contents. HA sorbed on the clay surface and increased AT interactions. The sorption effect on AT biodegradation and on its metabolite formation was studied with Pseudomonas sp. ADP. The biodegradation rate was greatly modulated by the material's sorption capacity and was clearly limited by the desorption rate. More surprisingly, it increased dramatically with LDH. Adsorption of bacterial cells on clay particles facilitates the degradation of non-sorbed chemical, and should be considered for predicting pesticide fate in the environment.  相似文献

This study quantified 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] sorption and mineralization rates in five soils as influenced by soil characteristics and nutrient contents. Results indicated that 2.4-D was weakly sorbed by soil, with Freundlich distribution coefficients ranging from 0.81 to 2.89 microg(1 - 1/n) g(-1) mL(1/n). First-order mineralization rate constants varied from 0.03 to 0.26, corresponding to calculated mineralization half-lives of 3 and 22 days, respectively. Herbicide sorption generally increased with increasing soil organic carbon content, but the extent of 2,4-D sorption per unit organic carbon varied among the soils due to differences in soil pH, clay content and/or organic matter quality. Herbicide mineralization rates were greater in soils that sorbed more 2,4-D per unit organic carbon, and that had greater soil nitrogen contents. We conclude that the effect of sorption on herbicide degradation cannot be generalized without a better understanding of the effects of soil characteristics and nutrient content on herbicide behavior in soil.  相似文献
