This paper reviews the concentrations of trichloroacetate (TCA) in the atmosphere-plant-soil system. Data originate mainly from Europe. The median TCA concentration in rainwater and canopy drip decreased until 1995. From then the median TCA concentration in rainwater remains rather constant while for canopy drip later data are not available. The same seems to hold for concentrations in air although a very limited data set is available. The median concentrations in coniferous needles and groundwater are constant for the period observed. The median TCA concentrations in soil decreased until 1992 and then remained constant.The TCA formation from chlorinated solvents in the atmosphere may explain a substantial percentage of the TCA amount in the atmosphere. The TCA concentrations in rainwater and canopy drip indicate that there will be other sources contributing to 10-50%. Waste incineration, biomass burning and natural formation in the marine boundary layer are potential candidate sources of TCA, but nothing can be said as yet on their TCA emission rates. Anthropogenic emissions of chlorine could also be a source.TCA can be formed from chlorinated solvents by biota. However, for coniferous trees the uptake of TCA from soil may be the predominant route. Biotic and abiotic reactions can cause to formation of TCA in soil, but also formation of TCA from chlorinated solvents by biota that excrete TCA, may contribute. Mass balance calculations of the bioactive soil top layer show that the production rate of TCA in certain soil types could be substantial. The mass balance calculations could not distinguish between natural and anthropogenic sources in soil. 相似文献

This paper focuses on a detailed analysis of the effects of meteorological factors explaining the variability of rain composition.Inorganic composition of 113 individual rain events was measured from May 2002 to October 2005 at a rural site near Chimay, in the western part of the Belgian Ardennes. Original models were fitted for each studied ion (H+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, NH4+, Na+, Cl−, NO3− and SO42−) to relate rain event concentration or wet deposition to the rainfall volume (R), the length of the antecedent dry period (ADP), the volume of the previous event (Rprev) as well as to the mean wind speed and the prevailing wind direction during both the dry and the rainy periods. These variables explained from 32% (H+) to 69% (NO3−) of rain concentration variability. Concentrations decreased logarithmically with increasing R values except in case of H+ for which a positive effect of rain volume on rain concentration was observed. ADP affected positively rain concentrations of all ions excluding K+ and H+ for which, respectively, a nonsignificant and a negative effect of this variable was observed. Increasing Rprev strengthened the effect of the variable R on H+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, NH4+ and SO42− concentrations while it softened the effect of ADP on NO3− concentrations. Wind speed and direction during dry and rainy periods explained together from 8% (K+) to 38% (Na+) of rain concentration total variability. R2 coefficients of the wet deposition models ranged from 0.51 (K+) to 0.79 (SO42−). For all ions, wet deposition increased significantly with increasing R values while the effects of the other variables were similar to those on concentrations. Wind conditions during dry and rainy periods explained from 4% (H+) to 24% (Na+) of wet deposition total variability. On an annual scale, the total dry period duration, the total rainfall volume as well as the shape of the distributions of the length of the antecedent dry periods and of the rain event volume are important parameters that influence annual wet deposition. 相似文献

A sampling method for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in workplace atmospheres using a standard glass fiber filter with a back-up section of Amberlite XAD-2 is described. Filters and XAD are solvent-desorbed and, without further clean-up, the solutions are submitted to high performance liquid chromatographic analysis using fluorimetric detection. Recovery of PAH from XAD-2 was studied, and was found to be in the range 80–100%. The sampling method was evaluated in a coke plant, an aluminium plant and in a creosote impregnating plant. The method described is rapid and sensitive for the determination of the most important workplace PAH, and accounts for both particulate and gaseous PAH. 相似文献

This article provides a critical review of the environmental chemistry of inorganic antimony (Sb) in soils, comparing and contrasting findings with those of arsenic (As). Characteristics of the Sb soil system are reviewed, with an emphasis on speciation, sorption and phase associations, identifying differences between Sb and As behaviour. Knowledge gaps in environmentally relevant Sb data for soils are identified and discussed in terms of the limitations this imposes on understanding the fate, behaviour and risks associated with Sb in environmental soil systems, with particular reference to mobility and bioavailability. 相似文献

Diphenylamine (DPA) is a compound from the third European Union (EU) list of priority pollutants. It was assigned by the EU to Germany to assess and control its environmental risks. DPA and derivatives are most commonly used as stabilizers in nitrocellulose-containing explosives and propellants, in the perfumery, and as antioxidants in the rubber and elastomer industry. DPA is also widely used to prevent post-harvest deterioration of apple and pear crops. DPA is a parent compound of many derivatives, which are used for the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals and further small-scale applications. Diphenylamines are still produced worldwide by the chemical industries. First reports showed that DPA was found in soil and groundwater. Some ecotoxicological studies demonstrated the potential hazard of various diphenylamines to the aquatic environment and to bacteria and animals. Studies on the biodegradability of DPA and its derivatives are very sparse. Therefore, further investigation is required to determine the complete dimension of the potential environmental hazard and to introduce possible (bio)remediation techniques for sites that are contaminated with this class of compounds. This is the first detailed review on DPA and some derivatives summarizing their environmental relevance as it is published in the literature so far and this review will recommend conducting further research in the future. 相似文献
