Goal and Scope

While the rise of the air temperature as part of the global climatic change seems to be widely assured, questions about the effects of this phenomenon in ecological systems get more and more interesting. In this sense this article shows by the example of monitoring sites in Baden-Württemberg the correlation of air temperature measurements with data on the phenology of selected plants.

Methods

To this end the data on air remperature and plant phenology which are gathered from spatial dislocated measurement sites were correlated by prior application of Kriging interpolation. In addition, geostatistics are ssed to analyze and cartographically depict the spatial structure of the phenology in spring and in summer.

Results and Conclusion

The statistical analysis reveals a significant relationship between the rising air temperature and the early beginning phenological phases like blooming or fruit maturation. From 1991 to 1999 spring time as indicated by phenological phases begins up to 14 days earlier than from 1961 to 1990. As proved by geostatistics, this holds true for the whole territory of Baden-Württemberg.

Recommendation and Perspective

The effects of the rise of air temperature should be examined not only by monitoring of biological individuals as for example plants, but on ecosystem level, too. The German ecosystem research and the environmental monitoring should be supplemented by the study of the effects of the climatic change in ecosystems. Because air temperature and humidity have a great influence on the temporal and spatial distribution of pathogen carriers (vectors) and pathogens mapping of the determinants of vector and pathogen distribution in space and time should be done in order to identify hot spots for risk assessment and further detailed epidemiological studies.  相似文献

This article discusses the evaluative criteria which are applied for the assessment of contaminated soils. Guide values for materials in the soil (reference values, test values and action levels). Such guide values can be derived based upon either functional or constitutional criteria. The leachate from the soil must be analyzed for noxious materials in order to ensure the conservation of both ground- and surface-waters. Furthermore, existing concepts and drafts for evaluating soil contamination are discussed. The great diversity of the 37 regulatory publications for evaluating soil contamination is due to 1. different purposes these guidelines are aimend at, and 2. varying philosophies with regard to the degree of safety which is considered to be acceptable:
  1. The approach of the LAGA (Länderarbeitsgemeinschaft Abfall-German federal cooperative for waste regulation) is to merely avert dangerous effects of polluted land rather than to take precautionary measures.
  2. The approach of the state of Baden-Württemberg is to combine precautionary activities and defensive procedures in one scheme with the technical and financial feasibility as criteria for the final decision.
A summary of the valid legislation is discussed, based on the specific regulatory works of the individual German states:
  • - The federal soil protection act and the directives based on it
  • - Inherent problems with deriving test values from basic toxicological data as well as the question of a tolerable cancer risk level
  • The procedure of linking the test values with a concrete danger to health that was designed for the federal soil protection act is discussed and compared with an alternative procedure. A presentation is given of the LABO (Länderarbeitsgemeinschaft Bodenschutz — German federal and state cooperative on soil conservation) utilization concept for soils: The use of test values for assessing soil materials with regard to particular utilization goals. The article quotes the ?Guideline for monitoring the success in soil cleanup operations” as compiled by the GDCh working group on ?Environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology” (1996). This guideline provides a review of the evaluatory concepts applied in the German states of Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, as well as those of the German federal cooperative for waste regulation (LAGA). The respective procedures and specifications of Holland, Canada, the USA are also noted in this guideline.  相似文献

The shores of many Central European lakes located in the hinterland of large conurbations are heavily endangered by intensive settlement, traffic, sewage input, manipulation of the water level, tourism and recreation. This increasing impact has negatively affected the function of the lake shore in respect to conservation and species protection, to water protection and its importance for recreation. This paper describes the overlap of the multiple uses and the precautions planned since 1981 on the national and international level to guarantee the essential multiple functionality, e.g. as drinking water reservoir for the conurbations in the northern part of Baden-Württemberg, as supraregional centre for water sports and tourism, and as an important environment for endangered plant and animal species. Management measures include regional planning as well as the international water protection and preservation with many contributions from non governmental international organisations Given a high agreement concerning these aims, many indispensable actions could successfully be realised on the political and administrative level. On the basis of 14 topics we follow the development since 1981, most recently also driven by the EU (FFH/Natura 2000), Water framework directive). Backlogs became obvious for four topics: 1. The lack of efficient reviews on completed measures, 2. gaps in basic understanding, 3. The dragging harmonisation of an intergrated shore protection program across the borders, and 4. the lack of concepts for a sustainable development including plans for monitoring.  相似文献

An evaluation of the degradation of soils can be performed in several ways. Here, one way will be demonstrated beginning with the definition of the objects which are to be evaluated, continued with the definition of protection aims and the derivation of indicators. Objects together with indicators provide the frame within which a multicriteria assessment, has to be performed. Often no deterministic quality function is available, so that the concept of partially ordered sets is suggested. This concept is demonstrated by an example of an evaluation exercise performed for the environmental protection agency in Baden Württemberg. A result is that the use of arbitrarily defined quality functions may lead to erroneous statements.  相似文献

    《Ecological modelling》2007,208(1):25-40
A shift in the basic philosophy of nature developed by Francis Bacon, Renè Descartes, and Isaac Newton, has been suggested but for the most part rejected within mainstream science. It suggests the need for viewing nature as a deeply organic and connected system of relationships that is not necessarily or readily submissive to reductive thinking and analysis. Ecosystem design within the construct of a field called ecological engineering poses fundamental questions with respect to the philosophy of nature upon which our current scientific paradigm is predominantly based. In an effort to foster development of rigorous, quantitative methods for developing insight into complex ecosystem phenomena we propose systems and engineering ecology—an integrated science comprised of principles from environ theory, ascendency theory, exergy theory, emergy theory, ecological network analysis and ecological modelling, synthesized through the formal agency of systems science. We contend that ecological engineering will be limited in its robustness apart from development of rigorous systems-based sciences that are quantitative and incorporate the complex, emergent properties of ecosystem. We justify our proposed framework on the philosophical paradox of transferring aspects of traditional engineering design into ecological engineering and on the four causes of Aristotle.  相似文献

Abstract: The important role of humans in the development of current ecosystems was recognized decades ago; however, the integration of history and ecology in order to inform conservation has been difficult. We identified four issues that hinder historical ecological research and considered possible solutions. First, differences in concepts and methods between the fields of ecology and history are thought to be large. However, most differences stem from miscommunication between ecologists and historians and are less substantial than is usually assumed. Cooperation can be achieved by focusing on the features ecology and history have in common and through understanding and acceptance of differing points of view. Second, historical ecological research is often hampered by differences in spatial and temporal scales between ecology and history. We argue that historical ecological research can only be conducted at extents for which sources in both disciplines have comparable resolutions. Researchers must begin by clearly defining the relevant scales for the given purpose. Third, periods for which quantitative historical sources are not easily accessible (before AD 1800) have been neglected in historical ecological research. Because data from periods before 1800 are as relevant to the current state of ecosystems as more recent data, we suggest that historical ecologists actively seek out data from before 1800 and apply analytic methods commonly used in ecology to these data. Fourth, humans are not usually considered an intrinsic ecological factor in current ecological research. In our view, human societies should be acknowledged as integral parts of ecosystems and societal processes should be recognized as driving forces of ecosystem change.  相似文献

In industrialized regions like Bozüyük, generally density of settlement and traffic is also observed. As a result of this density, the metal pollution that results from either industrial activities or traffic shall affect the air quality negatively. In determining this effect and sources thereof inspection of the depositing of heavy metals, which cause pollution, on the tree leaves and in the soil, and making comments by comparing with the values in the same kinds of plants and soil in the clean region has been aimed. For this purpose, zinc, copper, chromium, cadmium, iron, nickel, lead analysis have been carried out in order to determine the accumulation of pollution in plants and soils resulting from heavy industry and vehicles around Bozüyük (Turkey) region which is close to highway. These analyses have been carried out on washed and unwashed tree leave samples and surface soil from ten locations. Data used in the results were the average values of a series of data obtained from the experimental studies.  相似文献

In many semi-arid areas, estuaries are threatened because of freshwater impoundment. Estuaries are important sites for ecological diversity and, increasingly, for recreation. A system has been developed which rates estuaries according to their botanical importance. A formula allows a single numerical importance score to be calculated. The area cover of each estuarine plant community type (i.e. intertidal salt marsh, submerged macrophytes, reed/sedge swamps and supratidal salt marsh) and its importance in the estuary forms the basis of the score. The ‘ecological condition’ of the plant community and the community richness within the estuary are incorporated into the formula. The formula is effective in determining the botanical importance of estuaries. Further methods to determine the zoological, physical and socio-economic importance of estuaries need to be developed to allow the overall importance of estuaries to be determined.  相似文献

Through their use of energy and materials, universities cause a great deal of environmental pollution which could be reduced considerably by an effective choice of organizational and technical measures. There are some examples for environmental protection measures at several universities, but a professional environmental management system (EMS) for universities with a systematic approach to reduce the consumption of resources is lacking. At the University of Osnabrück, the basis for an EMS applicable for a university has been developed for the first time in Germany and the use of this system can also be transferred to other universities. The EMS is composed of ten building blocks, for example, alteration of the administration’s organizational structure, adoption of environmental guidelines, analysis of the energy and material flows which result in an eco-balance, an environmental program or measures to inform the staff and to help to involve them in environmental management. Over the next months, these ten building blocks will gradually be implemented at the University of Osnabrück. Five articles will provide an overview about the EMS developed for the University of Osnabrück as a whole and will describe parts of the material and energy flow analysis, and the planned environmental information system.

Forecasting changes in urban ecological security could be important for the maintenance or improvement of the urban ecological environment. However, there are few references in this field and no landmark research work has been reported, particularly quantitative research. A forecasting model for ecological security based on cellular automata (CA) was developed using preliminary spatial data from an ecological security assessment of Guangzhou conducted previously (1990–2005). The model was constrained using transformation rules based upon proposed planning for 2010–2020. A simulation accuracy of 72.09% was acquired. Using a one-bit assessment grid for 2005 as the starting state for the simulation, the model was used to forecast ecological security for 2020. This revealed that although the ecological security status would be improved relative to current trends, there would still be an overall decline in ecological security over the next 15 years. Even if new urban plans were implemented, landscape pattern analysis suggested a more scattered and homogenous distribution in the urban landscape of Guangzhou and significant variation in landscape characteristics among districts. This suggests that further measures must be adopted to reverse the current trends in Guangzhou's ecological security. The model highlights the need to make ecological protection an integral part of urban planning. This study demonstrates the potential of CA models for forecasting ecological security. Such models could make an important contribution to decision-making for regional governors and to the development of urban planning incorporating assessment and prediction of ecological security.  相似文献

Neutral models provide an alternative to niche-based assembly rules of ecological communities by assuming that communities’ properties are shaped by the stochastic interplay between ecological drift, migration and speciation. The recent and ongoing interest about neutral assumptions has produced many developments on the theoretical side, with nevertheless limited echoes in terms of analyses of real-world data. The present review paper aims to help bridge the widening gap between modellers and field ecologists through two objectives. First, to provide a multi-criteria typology of the main neutral models, including those from population genetics that have not yet been transposed to ecology, by considering how the fundamental processes of ecological drift, speciation and migration are modelled and, specifically, how space is taken into account. Second, to review methods recently proposed to estimate models parameters from field data, a point that should be mastered to allow for broader applications.  相似文献

Background and aim Grassy field margins have a high relevance in agricultural landscapes regarding the preservation of typical arthropod communities, their biodiversity and the ecological system functions linked with it. The structure of terrestrial communities is affected by anthropogenic impairment, which can lead to the replacement of sensitive by more tolerant species. The negative influence of pesticides on fauna and flora as well as the associated functional aspects (ecological system functions) and the reduction of biodiversity are undisputed since longer for agrarian systems and can also be assumed for grassy field margins due to spray-drift. The case study presented here examined the effect of influences related to utilization on the plant and arthropod communities of grassy field margins. Reference sites, on which due to missing farming in the direct surrounding countryside no utilization influences on the communities were present, were compared to non-target sites, on which these influences could not be excluded. Sites in three German macrochores were examined: in the Jülicher Börde, at the northeastern edge of the Leipziger low lands and in the area Mainfranken near Würzburg, all of them intensely used agricultural landscapes. Beside the vegetation, the epigeic arthropod communities of carabid beetles, spiders, springtails, hymenopterans, hover flies and ladybirds as well as abiotic parameters were included in the analysis. The aim of the study was the development of a statistical exclusion procedure which is capable to quantify the amount of variation in field community data which can be attributed to isolated factors. Special attention was paid to non-observable utilization impacts like undocumented pesticide application. The extraction of patterns of residual variance allowed for the uncovering of masked effects on a scale below the obvious abundance pattern. Materials and methods The variability in the species composition was visualized with the help of non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS). Indicator species analysis revealed those species which could be recognized as statistically significant indicators for local conditions. The relationship between the species composition and the environmental factors was statistically modeled by canonical correspondence analysis. By variance partitioning it was possible to extract the variance portion which could be bound to a set of covariables. For the remaining residual variance it could not be excluded that this resulted from a pesticide influence. Results The analyses based on the ecological distance (Bray-Curtis) showed that the communities in references sites and non-target sites could be clearly distinguished in all three landscapes. Based on the portions of variance which could be explained statistically by a utilization related influence, two different directions of reaction to the utilization related variables could be stated. On the one hand there were sensitive species, showing reduced abundances in the non-target sites, on the other hand there were species increasing in abundance in the non-target sites, recruiting from the group of strong competitors. Discussion By the use of residual variances a clear influence of utilization related parameters on the community of soil arthropods and vegetation could be shown. The observed abundances shifts between reference sites and non-target sites in the raw data were attributed to a multi-dimensional factor complex which could be split up by the use of partial ordination methods, quantifying the relationships to the utilization related parameters. It was demonstrated that special utilization correlated patterns could be found in the raw data after eliminating the influence of the covariables. Conclusions Utilization related influences in the non-target sites evened out the characteristic communities for the three landscapes towards a comprehensive, ubiquitous species composition. The hypothesis of decreasing abundance of sensitive species and the augmentation of tolerant species due to a potential pesticide influence could be underpinned and quantified. Sensitive species which showed a significant reduction in abundance between reference and non-target sites showed a much higher sensitivity to the influences and thus were assigned a higher indicator potential than tolerant species. From the group of the sensitive species Pardosa palustris and Poecilus cupreus could be isolated as two promising macrochore-specific indicator species for the masked effects. Recommendations and perspectives A macrochore-specific assessment of utilization effects was requested for future studies due to the different sensitivities of the species in the three landscapes. The elaboration and specifying of reference conditions for terrestrial agrarian systems is an important task for the future. The presented approach deduces a macrochore-specific, complex effect pattern of anthropogenic impairment on terrestrial species communities. It can be used to extract masked effects and by this facilitates a more sustainable use of e.g. plant protection products. Furthermore it provides an opportunity to validate evaluation systems for the effects of utilization impacts on terrestrial vegetation and arthropods. Additionally the species sensitivities with respect to the macrochores allow a regionalized assessment of ecotoxicological effects and the integration into spatially explicit effect assessment models.  相似文献

Abstract: Current networks of protected areas are biased in many countries toward landscapes of low productivity. Voluntary conservation incentives have been suggested as a socially acceptable way to supplement existing networks with more productive, privately owned areas of high priority for nature conservation. The limited resources committed to nature conservation demand cost‐efficiency. Efficiency, however, depends not only on costs incurred to society from alternative ways of maintaining biodiversity but also on ecological values that can be captured. We examined the ecological efficiency of the new market‐based voluntary program to preserve forest habitats on private land in southwestern Finland. We compared sites that have become protected (10‐year contracts) in the program with managed forests, with sites that have been negotiated for protection for which no contract has been signed, and with the most ecologically valuable privately owned sites in the region that have not been offered for protection by forest owners. We surveyed sites for the amount of dead wood, wood‐decomposing fungi, and epiphytic lichens to evaluate their ecological quality. Contracted sites had more features important for overall biodiversity than managed forests and negotiated sites with no contract. These results indicate that procedures used during site selection and negotiations were appropriate and not opportunistic. The contracted sites were also as valuable in ecological terms as the best, still‐unprotected, privately owned forests in the region that have not been offered for protection. We conclude that voluntary conservation programs have the potential to yield ecologically valuable sites for protection if the site‐selection procedures are appropriate. Reliance on completely voluntary programs, however, may entail uncertainties and inadequacies, for example, in terms of spatial configuration and persistence of the ecological values. Thus, such programs may often need to be supplemented with alternative methods such as land purchase to achieve an ecologically effective network of protected sites.  相似文献

Establishing IUCN Red List Criteria for Threatened Ecosystems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: The potential for conservation of individual species has been greatly advanced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) development of objective, repeatable, and transparent criteria for assessing extinction risk that explicitly separate risk assessment from priority setting. At the IV World Conservation Congress in 2008, the process began to develop and implement comparable global standards for ecosystems. A working group established by the IUCN has begun formulating a system of quantitative categories and criteria, analogous to those used for species, for assigning levels of threat to ecosystems at local, regional, and global levels. A final system will require definitions of ecosystems; quantification of ecosystem status; identification of the stages of degradation and loss of ecosystems; proxy measures of risk (criteria); classification thresholds for these criteria; and standardized methods for performing assessments. The system will need to reflect the degree and rate of change in an ecosystem's extent, composition, structure, and function, and have its conceptual roots in ecological theory and empirical research. On the basis of these requirements and the hypothesis that ecosystem risk is a function of the risk of its component species, we propose a set of four criteria: recent declines in distribution or ecological function, historical total loss in distribution or ecological function, small distribution combined with decline, or very small distribution. Most work has focused on terrestrial ecosystems, but comparable thresholds and criteria for freshwater and marine ecosystems are also needed. These are the first steps in an international consultation process that will lead to a unified proposal to be presented at the next World Conservation Congress in 2012.  相似文献
