Adult rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) and bush hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei) allocate much of their surface activity to being vigilant for vertebrate predators. Individuals of the two species associate for thermoregulatory basking on rock outcrops (koppies) and, in the Matobo National Park, Zimbabwe, frequently constitute heterospecific groups that produce offspring synchronously. Exposure to predators during basking is thought to put a high premium on vigilance, particularly during the presence of dependent offspring in nurseries. We predicted, therefore, an increase in the association of the two species of hyraxes when offspring were present because this would lead to larger groups, thus enhancing the ability to detect predators. Koppie aggregations of hyraxes were classified as homospecific or heterospecific according to basking group composition. Heterospecific association increased when offspring were present, and heterospecific groups were larger than homospecific ones. Fifty-one percent of nurseries were heterospecific for adults/subadults. During the pre-weaning phase (<2 months after birth), 85% of P. capensis and 65% of H. brucei juveniles were in nurseries of heterospecific basking groups. Heterospecific groups had more offspring than homospecific groups. Juvenile mortality is most evident after young are weaned and heterospecific associations break down. Heterospecific aggregation, through increased group size, may result in a higher probability of avoiding predators, thereby reducing the vulnerability of young.  相似文献

The use of nucleic acids to estimate crustacean growth is not well documented, and may be complicated by biochemical changes associated with their molt cycle. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of molt stage on nucleic acid concentrations in abdominal muscle tissue of juvenile white shrimp,Penaeus vannamei, and to examine the relationship between nucleic acid concentrations and growth rates of shrimp exposed to different feeding regimes throughout a 12 d feeding experiment. RNA and DNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were not significantly different among the five major molt stages early postmolt, late postmolt, intermolt, early premolt, and late premolt. In the feeding experiment, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios accounted for >70% of the variation in shrimp growth on three different sampling days. In addition, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were used successfully to discriminate between unfed, moderately-fed, and well-fed shrimp. These variables exhibited significant treatment differences in <24 h after the initiation of the different feeding regimes, whereas significant changes in whole-body weight took longer to detect. Rapid detection of significant treatment effects can be useful in ecological studes, especially those concerned with food-web interactions.  相似文献

Three species of Carapidae have in common a tenuis larval stage, during which they settle in the lagoon and take refuge in the same species of holothuroid. From the juvenile stage, Carapus homei and C. boraborensis are commensal, whereas Encheliophis gracilis is parasitic. The aims of this study were to analyse to what extent the ontogenetic changes of the otic capsule affected the shape of the inner ear and how environmental cues, due to the above-mentioned life history and the style, could influence the structure of the sagitta. Sagittal sections revealed a three-dimensional asymmetry with a nucleus close to the proximal surface. Observations of the growth axis of the sagitta suggest it has a morphogenetic impact on the otic cavity. Each sagitta contains three main zones related to the life stages of the fish. Bands and checks were observed in the third zone in C. homei and C. boraborensis, but this pattern was less discernible in E. gracilis. These structural differences in zone 3 could be related to the commensal and parasitic life styles of these fishes. Further studies dealing with otosac features and otolith functions are suggested.  相似文献

Evolutionary biologists have shown much recent interest in the costliness and signal content of colorful plumage displays in birds. Although many studies suggest that both carotenoid- and structurally-based plumage colors are condition-dependent indicators of health and nutritional state at the time ornamental feathers are grown, there is little experimental evidence supporting the idea that melanin pigmentation is a reliable signal of condition during molt. Instead, melanin-based ornamental coloration often reveals the competitive ability and dominance of individuals throughout the year. However, this work does not indicate which proximate environmental factors shape the expression of melanin pigmentation at the time of feather growth. Because of the link between melanin coloration and the social environment, it is possible that the development of brightly colored plumage may be associated with aggressive social interactions during feather molt. Here, we show that melanin-based ornamental coloration in male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) is correlated with the degree to which individuals interact aggressively with conspecifics during molt. Males that were dominant (beta, but not alpha) within captive social groups during molt grew larger badges than subordinates. Groups of males that had higher rates of aggression during molt grew larger badges than less aggressive triads. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that melanin pigmentation and plumage-based status badges are related to the competitive history of individuals during feather development. By coupling badge size directly with aggressive experiences during molt, birds can use their status signal to honestly indicate their likelihood of winning agonistic encounters throughout the year.  相似文献

Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that five tropical lucinid species living in or near Thalassia testudinum seagrass beds are colonized by the same bacterial symbiont species. In addition, a new lucinid species belonging to the genus Anodontia, which inhabits reducing sediment found near seagrass beds and in mangrove swamps, has been included in the present study. Endosymbiosis in Anodontia alba was examined according to symbiont phylogenetic and gill ultrastructural analysis. Phylogenetic analysis showed that partial 16S rDNA sequences of A. alba- and Codakia orbicularis-symbionts were 100% identical at all nucleotide positions determined, suggesting that A. alba also harbors the same symbiont species as C. orbicularis (and, consequently, as C. orbiculata, C. pectinella, Linga pensylvanica and Divaricella quadrisulcata). Based on light and electron microscopy, the cellular organization of the gill filament appeared similar to those already described in other lucinids. The most distinctive feature is the lack of "granule cells" in the lateral zone of A. alba gill filaments. In order to confirm the single-species hypothesis, purified fractions of gill bacterial symbionts obtained from the gills of each of the six tropical lucinids cited above were used to infect aposymbiotic juveniles of C. orbicularis. In each case, aposymbiotic juvenile batches were successfully infected by the gill-endosymbiont fractions, whereas, during the experiments, juveniles from the negative control were still uninfected. These experimental data confirm the phylogenetic data and also demonstrate that chemoautotrophic bacterial endosymbionts from their host cells can colonize aposymbiotic juveniles. The conclusion also follows that intracellular gill-endosymbionts still have the capacity to recognize and colonize new host generations. Lucinids provide a unique model for the study of sulfide-oxidizing symbiosis, even if symbionts remain unculturable.  相似文献

The importance of changes in nutritive value of the sediment in regulating the dynamics of the small deposit-feeding polychaete Streblospio shrubsolii (Buchanam, 1890) was examined. First, fluctuations in the population dynamics of S. shrubsolii and in the nutritive content of the sediment were studied on a seasonal scale. Subsequently, a manipulative field experiment was used to test the hypothesis that, in summer, availability of food regulates aspects of the population dynamics of S. shrubsolii. In summer 1997, sharp increases in protein concentrations and in the number of individuals of S. shrubsolii were found compared to all the other seasons. Densities of S. shrubsolii also showed an increase in the subsequent season. Newly recruited juveniles (19-31 setigers) were abundant in summer and autumn 1997, whereas the number of juveniles (32-42 setigers) increased in autumn 1997. Large numbers of adults were found in summer 1997. Significant negative correlations occurred in summer 1997 between the concentrations of proteins and the total number of individuals, the number of newly recruited juveniles and the density of adults. No differences in densities of juveniles, adults or total number of individuals were found among plots before starting the experiment. After 20 days of experimental enrichment, proteins showed a tendency to increase. After 40 days of enrichment, the total number of individuals was significantly greater in the enriched plots. Large numbers of newly recruited larvae and postlarval adults were found in the enriched plots. The experiment corroborated the model that the growth of population was limited by the availability of food in summer. Thus, in this season, patches of food could have a fundamental role in determining the population dynamics of small deposit-feeders under natural conditions and over short time scales.  相似文献

We examined evidence for kin-related signal discrimination in the Australian scincid lizard Egernia striolata, using 41 juvenile lizards from 14 litters from a population in the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. We characterised each juvenile at four polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci, determined genetic relatedness among pairs of juveniles, and assigned for each litter one other litter that was genetically closest and one other litter that was genetically most distant. Lizards responded significantly more strongly, with tongue flicks and time in contact, to skin secretion stimuli from more distant than genetically close, unfamiliar conspecific juveniles. When presented with an intruder, juvenile lizards basked for shorter periods when the intruder was more distantly related, and aggressive lizards directed more aggressive acts towards more distantly related than closely related conspecific intruders. We deduce from these results that there is kin recognition in juvenile E. striolata, and that they are able to discriminate related from unrelated individuals among unfamiliar conspecifics.  相似文献

In a semiterrestrial and estuarine tropical crab, Armases angustipes Dana (Grapsoidea: Sesarmidae), changes in biomass (measured as dry mass, W; carbon, C; nitrogen, N; and hydrogen, H; per individual) and relative elemental composition (C, N, H, in percent of W; C:N mass ratio) were studied during development from an early egg stage through hatching, the complete larval phase, metamorphosis and the first juvenile crab stage (CI). In the megalopa and CI, growth was measured also within the moulting cycle, and biomass and elemental composition were determined in cast exuviae. From an early egg stage to the freshly hatched larva, A. angustipes lost about 20% of W, 29% of C, 5% of N and 32% of H. Proportionally higher losses in C than in N were reflected also in a significantly decreasing C:N mass ratio (from 5.02 to 3.74). These results indicate that lipids mobilised from yolk reserves represented the principal metabolic substrate for embryonic energy production, while proteins were catabolised at a much lower rate. The present data of growth and exuviation are compared with previously published data from a congener, A. miersii Rathbun, which has an abbreviated and facultatively lecithotrophic mode of larval development (with three instead of four zoeal stages; stages I and II in principle independent of food). When growth is measured as an increase in the final (premoult) biomass of successive developmental stages, both species show an exponential pattern. Within the moulting cycles of the megalopa and the first juvenile, both species show parabola-shaped growth curves, with a rapid biomass increase in postmoult and intermoult stages, and losses in the premoult phase. Thus, the two Armases species show, in general, similar patterns of larval and early juvenile growth. However, the initial size of eggs and larvae is about four times larger in A. miersii, and its biomass remains higher throughout the period of larval and early juvenile development. A. angustipes is able to partially make up for this difference, as it has an additional zoeal stage, and its megalopa and CI stages show higher relative biomass increments (in percent of initial values). Due to this compensatory growth pattern, A. angustipes reaches in its CI stage about half the biomass of a juvenile A. miersii. When exuvial losses of megalopae and juveniles are compared between these two species, A. miersii shows higher biomass losses per individual (corresponding with its larger size), but lower relative losses (C, N, H, in percent of late premoult body mass or in percent of previously achieved growth increments). Differences in larval and early juvenile growth and in the exuvial losses of megalopae and juveniles of these two congeners are discussed in relation to their differential ecology, life history and reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Fine mesh enclosures (0.9 m2 in basal area, 1 m high, with 100 µm mesh) and a jet-net retrieval system were developed to test the influence of juvenile prawn stocking density on growth rates in (1) different months (April and October/November) and (2) different types of intertidal seagrass beds in the Embley River estuary of tropical Australia. Small juvenile tiger prawns (3-6 mm in carapace length, CL) were stocked in enclosures at densities of 4-32 prawns per enclosure (4.4-35.5 prawns m-2) on a high biomass seagrass bed (about 70 g m-2 of mostly Enhalus acoroides) and one with low biomass (about 10 g m-2 of mostly Halodule uninervis). After 2-3 weeks in the enclosures, recovery rates, and hence possibly survival, were greater on the high biomass Enhalus than on the low biomass Halodule. However, not all fish and crustaceans could be excluded from the enclosures. Growth rates were twice as fast on the high biomass Enhalus than on the low biomass Halodule. It is likely that the high biomass Enhalus, with its greater surface area, supported more epiphytic flora and fauna and reduced the potential for interference competition between prawns, compared with the low biomass Halodule. Growth rates on Enhalus were significantly faster at a stocking density of 4 prawns per enclosure (1.3 mm CL week-1) than at a stocking density of 16 and 32 prawns per enclosure (both 0.8 mm CL week-1), and did not differ significantly between April and October/November (temperatures were about 30°C at both times). The mean growth rate at 8 prawns per enclosure (1.1 mm CL week-1) did not differ significantly from those at 4, 16 and 32 prawns per enclosure. These results from two seagrass beds suggest that the carrying capacity for juvenile tiger prawns was greater in the high biomass Enhalus than the low biomass Halodule bed.  相似文献

The wreckfish (Polyprion americanus) is a panoceanic, long-lived, deep-water demersal species, characterized by an extended pelagic juvenile phase associated with floating objects. In the present study morphometric data from 435 specimens collected from Greece (Crete), Italy (Ionian Sea) and the Atlantic coast of France from September 1999 to March 2001 were analyzed to estimate the settlement size of the species and associated changes in morphology. The fishery sample included specimens from both the pelagic and the demersal stage. Length-at-settlement (TL50) and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by fitting a logistic function. Eleven morphometric characters were analyzed, and the existing inflection points, reflecting alterations in body shape, were defined: (1) iteratively, as the transition point, splitting the data set into two groups, for which the reduced major axis functions, between a character and total length, of the successive groups best fit (minimum sum of squares of residuals) the combined data set and (2) where the second derivative of the fitted third-order polynomial functions to morphometric ratios equaled zero. The main size range within which wreckfish settled was 56-65 cm, and the means of the inflection points defined by the two methods were 61 and 64 cm. These results indicate changes in functional morphology associated with settlement. The monitoring of wreckfish juveniles caught in the wild and kept individually in captivity showed changes in growth and food intake at approximately the estimated settlement length and suggested that temperature was the most likely factor triggering settlement.  相似文献

Postlarval lobsters Homarus americanus Milne Edwards hatched from three females collected in 1989 from Block Island Sound, Rhode Island were reared individually in the laboratory under nine treatment combinations of temperature (15, 18 and 21°C) and feeding (starved, low ration and full ration). Total RNA, DNA (mgind.-1), RNA:DNA ratios and molt stage were determined for individuals sampled at daily intervals. Postlarval lobsters had high resistance to starvation. A majority of the lobsters survive 12 d of food deprivation, with some surviving up to 24–29 d. During starvation, cell biomass (estimated from protein:DNA) decreased to a minumum size, whereas cell number (based on total DNA) was generally conserved. The molt cycle was arrested at molt stage C in the starved postalrvae. Instar duration was inversely related to temperature. However, the duration of the postlarval instar did not differ between the low and full ration treatments. Uncoupling of cell growth and the molt cycle was evident in the full and low ration treatments. In the full ration treatments, the postmolt through early premolt was characterized by a rapid increase in total RNA and DNA. Maximum cell biomass was attained by molt stage C or D0. In the low ration treatments, total RNA and DNA were less than those in the full ration treatments and the maximum cell biomass was attained only at molt stage D2-3. Notably, different feeding regimes resulted in different patterns in RNA:DNA ratios over the molt cycle during the postlarval instar. RNA:DNA ratio was a sensitive indicator of recent (2 to 3 d) food deprivation. However, this ratio was positively related to the level of feeding only at molt stages C to D1 and was inversely related to temperature regime. These results indicate that the use of RNA:DNA ratios to estimate the relative nutritional state of postlarval tobsters must be qualified with respect to the period of the molt cycle and the temperature regime.  相似文献

We re-evaluated the "diel feeding hypothesis" by measuring diel variation in starch, protein, and floridoside in three algal "types" collected from a fringing coral reef at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Samples of two species of rhodophyte algae, Gracilaria arcuata and Acanthophora spicifera, and the turf assemblage from the territories of the herbivorous pomacentrid Stegastes nigricans were collected at four time periods through the day: 0630-0730, 1000-1100, 1330-1430, and 1630-1730 hours. We also measured the ability of several species of marine fish (the herbivores Acanthurus nigricans, A. lineatus, A. olivaceus, and Parma alboscapularis and the detritivore Ctenochaetus striatus) to hydrolyse floridoside by estimating !-galactosidase activity in tissue from the anterior intestine. We detected no diel pattern in protein content of the algae but found a significant steady increase in starch content throughout the day. Floridoside content increased in the morning and decreased in the afternoon, a pattern that may be driven by midday photoinhibition of the algae. All the fishes tested could utilise floridoside. Our results support the diel feeding hypothesis. Although floridoside content decreased in the afternoon, our results suggest floridoside was used during the day by the algae to synthesise starch. Thus the algae increased in nutritional value until photoinhibition occurred at midday then subsequently maintained their nutritional value during the afternoon. This pattern of algal nutrients increasing to a midday peak and remaining relatively constant throughout the afternoon correlates well with the diel feeding pattern in many species of marine herbivorous fish.  相似文献

Juvenile and adult marine organisms differ in their morphology, chemistry, physiology, behavior, and ecology. Because juvenile algae are thinner, smaller, and have more delicate tissues than adults, they are often assumed to be more susceptible to grazers. We examined within-species food preferences of four common generalist herbivores for juvenile and adult tissues of eight common brown algae in two-choice laboratory food-preference experiments. Our results showed that juvenile algae did not tend to be a preferred food of herbivores. Juvenile tissues were significantly preferred over adult tissues in only four of the 32 combinations of algae and herbivores tested. In 12 experiments, adult tissues were preferred over juvenile tissues, and no choice occurred in the remaining 16 experiments. When sea urchins exhibited a preference, it was always for adult tissues. The other three herbivores, an isopod and two snails, were more variable in their choices, sometimes preferring juveniles, sometimes adults, and sometimes having no preference. We measured nitrogen and phlorotannin concentrations in adult and juvenile seaweeds to see whether these parameters were correlated with herbivore food preferences. Nitrogen levels were similar in juveniles and adults of three algal species and were higher in juveniles of two. Phlorotannin levels were higher in juveniles of four species and lower in juveniles of one. The other three species showed no differences in phlorotannin levels. Phlorotannin concentrations decreased with increasing juvenile size in three species and increased with increasing size in one species. Neither nitrogen nor phlorotannin concentrations explained overall herbivore food preferences for algae of different stages. Our results suggest that preferences of certain grazers for juvenile algae are not as strong as previously assumed and are dependent on herbivore species. Preferences between juveniles and adults are likely to be determined by a combination of morphological and chemical features of the tissues and the unique responses of herbivore species to those features. The trophic relationships between meiobenthic harpacticoids and juvenile predatory fish were investigated in a shallow lagoon on Bermuda. Harpacticoids represent an essential food source for the juveniles of several demersal fish species. Juveniles up to 3 cm length of one fish species feed exclusively on harpacticoids. Meiobenthic harpacticoids are therefore an important component of food chains leading to higher trophic levels. However, the feeding pressure exerted by the fish on the harpacticoid populations is negligible.  相似文献

A range of tissue and cell types from adult and juvenile stages of vent- and non-vent-dwelling deep-sea and shallow-water organisms were compared for signs of cell division, in preparation for a cytogenetic study of the different groups. Virtually all the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) vent species (bresiliid shrimp, bathymodiolid mussel, branchipolynoid polychaete, and a range of small gastropods) showed an abundance of metaphase chromosome spreads, indicating a generally high intrinsic rate of cell division, irrespective of their phylogenetic group. In comparison, similar tissues and life-history stages (i.e. gonad, developing eggs and gill) from two deep-sea bathypelagic crustaceans, Hymenodora and Gnathophausia, failed to yield any convincing evidence of cell division. This indicated that rates of growth and reproduction in the rest of the deep sea are extremely low. While much has been written about the contrasting growth rates of vent versus non-vent organisms, this is the first direct evidence of differences in cell-division rate between vent and non-vent species, which undoubtedly reflects contrasting conditions relating to food availability and temporal stability in these two deep-sea environments. The cells of shallow-water marine invertebrates (Mytilus, Nucella, Littorina, Pomatoceros and Crangon), based on the results of previous cytogenetic investigations, occupy an intermediate position with respect to their cell-division kinetics. When chromosome numbers, DNA content and nuclear diameters were compared between vent and non-vent species, this showed that no change had occurred in these characters since the time of vent colonisation. Representative chromosome spreads from hydrothermal-vent organisms are shown here for the first time.  相似文献

Summary Several theoretical models have suggested that increases in territory overlap with conspecifics should result in lower rates of resource accumulation by territorial residents. This assumption was tested using juvenile Anolis aeneus lizards, which exhibit variable degrees of territory overlap in both the field and laboratory. In a series of laboratory trials under controlled density and resource conditions, juvenile growth rates were negatively related to the degree of territory overlap. This effect aplied to juveniles of all but the lowest status groups, although higher status juveniles had more exclusive territories than did lower status juveniles. Focal studies indicated that food depletion in the zones of overlap was the most likely reason for the negative relationship between territory overlap and growth. It is suggested that juveniles in the field may tolerate extensive territory overlap in spite of growth penalties because of a general shortage of predator-safe homesites in undisturbed habitats.  相似文献

The emergence of the Isthmus of Panama, approximately 3.0-3.5 million years ago, established two very different marine systems (the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific) and separated previously continuous marine populations. The geographic isolation of transisthmian sister species provides an excellent basis for the study of divergence and speciation processes. Here we describe the morphology of the first postembryonic stage of Alpheus saxidomus and A. simus, two rock-boring alpheids; the estimated time since divergence for this transisthmian pair ranges from 4.4-6.1 to 3-9 million years. The presence of a first zoeal stage in A. saxidomus, e.g., without pleopods and a telson with 7+7 setae, indicates a prolonged developmental sequence. In contrast, hatchlings of A. simus are substantially more developed and resemble juveniles. Thus, the developmental modes of A. saxidomus and A. simus are strikingly different with abbreviated, most probably direct, development in the latter species. Reduced food availability in the Caribbean compared to the Pacific coast is likely to be a possible reason for the evolution of such important differences in life history traits of the two transisthmian sister species. It is suggested that a transition from prolonged to abbreviated development evolved gradually during the estimated time since divergence; however, such a shift may have taken place within a substantially smaller time span.  相似文献

The intertidal brown alga Fucus serratus is naturally expanding its distributional range along the north shore of Spain. Shores being colonised by F. serratus harbour saturated algal communities, with almost no free space. Processes responsible for the successful expansion were investigated in a locality where the alga was experimentally introduced. After a short period, the number of F. serratus plants increased exponentially at a monthly intrinsic rate of 0.111. At early and intermediate stages of invasion, colonisation occurred by the growth of patches of the invader around the transplant points. F. serratus is a bad disperser, with most of propagules settling in near proximity to parent plants. Colonisation of manipulated and control areas was influenced by the proximity of propagule sources. Experimental removals of canopies, irrespective of whether the turf was removed or left intact, accelerated the expansion, as this component of the community had a negative influence on recruitment of both F. serratus and F. vesiculosus. The unmanipulated algal beds were, however, invasible, as some control quadrats close (<10 m) to F. serratus patches had a 100% cover of F. serratus at the end of the study. Prior or concurrent to increases of F. serratus, a decrease in cover of F. vesiculosus and other resident macroalgae was evident. No formal competition experiment was done but results suggest that F. serratus outcompetes F. vesiculosus and Bifurcaria bifurcata at mid-tidal levels. In scraped quadrats, in which both Fucus species recruited at large densities, F. serratus grew at a higher rate than F. vesiculosus and eventually monopolised the experimental surfaces.  相似文献

We examined adult-juvenile conflict in the guanaco (Lama guanicoe). During spring, territorial males become increasingly aggressive toward all juveniles born the previous year and begin expelling them from family groups. In an apparent effort to reduce aggression, juveniles display submissive crouches when being observed, approached, or attacked by the territorial male. Therefore, we assessed the influence of juvenile submissive behavior on the timing of dispersal and also examined if dispersal time was related to survival and reproductive performance as adults. We also evaluated hypotheses regarding the evolution of juvenile mammalian dispersal in the context of if and how each may favor the forced dispersal of juvenile guanacos by territorial males. Juveniles generally dispersed in late spring and early summer, and a nearly equal proportion of females (n=46; 48%) and males (n=49; 52%) dispersed. More-submissive animals generally dispersed later than less-submissive animals. Juvenile sex and dispersal time were not related to survival. In contrast, juvenile sex and dispersal time were related to reproductive performance. The probability of reproducing was highest when juveniles dispersed early and decreased with increasing time in family groups prior to dispersal. The largest proportion of juveniles was forced to disperse during a 2-week interval following the peak of the breeding season. Competition for food resources is likely very intense at this juncture and territorial males may force older juveniles to disperse in order to divert food resources to younger neonates. Additionally, juveniles may be forced to disperse after territorial males mate their mothers to prevent lost mating opportunities, because females leave territories when their offspring disperse and possibly prior to mating with males. We conclude that the forced dispersal of juvenile guanacos by territorial males is ultimately driven by competition for food resources on territories. The timing of dispersal, however, may be tempered by the chronology of matings between territorial males and particular adult females, and/or genetic relatedness between territorial males and juveniles.  相似文献

The population biology of Donax hanleyanus (Philippi, 1845) (Bivalvia: Donacidae) was studied by monthly sampling from June 1998 through June 2000, at Restinga da Marambaia Beach, Brazil. Two transects were established and divided into ten strata parallel to the waterline, and five replicates were taken with a 0.04 m2 sampler in each stratum. The highest densities of D. hanleyanus were recorded in winter (September 1998, July 1999) and autumn (April 2000). A stratified distribution was observed: recruits were found mainly in the middle swash zone, while juveniles and adults occurred across the tidal gradient up to the retention zone. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between years. Annual production (in ash-free dry mass) ranged from 0.76 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1998) to 3.67 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1999), while the production-to-biomass (P/B) ratio varied from 1.45 to 1.59. Life span was ca. 17 months. Of all variables tested, only two, one biological and one physical, seem to have influenced the population dynamics of this species. A significant negative correlation between the densities of the suspension-feeders D. hanleyanus and Emerita brasiliensis (Crustacea: Decapoda) indicated possible intraguild competition, and there was a significant exponential correlation between beach slope and the mean across-shore position of D. hanleyanus. Data compiled from literature suggests a latitudinal gradient in population parameters, with mortality and renewal rate (P/B) of different species of Donax increasing and life span decreasing from temperate to tropical regions. Other factors influencing population dynamics, such as food availability, and the contributions of individual and community biomass to energy and nutrient cycling are also discussed.  相似文献
