Inshore and offshore populations ofSclerasterias mollis (Hutton, 1872) were sampled on the outer continental shelf off the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand, and their nutritional and reproductive cycles are described from 1985–1986. Histological changes in the gonads are generally typical of other asteroids. The gametogenic cycle takes 12 mo. The gonad and pyloric caeca indices in both females and males had an inverse relationship.S. mollis accumulates nutrients in the pyloric caeca during summer and early autumn. The gonads develop in the autumn and winter. Offshore seastars were much larger and had significantly higher gonad and pyloric caeca indices than inshore individuals. These differences in body sizes and organ indices arise from differences in food availability and/or population density.  相似文献

The biochemical composition of the pyloric caeca of female seastars (Asterias rubens) was studied throughout the annual reproductive cycle. The pyloric caeca index is high during the pseudo-rest stage of the ovaries and decreases gradually during ovarian growth. The pyloric caeca dry weight varies between 20 and 38% of the fresh weight. Lipids, and less prominently carbohydrates (both glycogen and other reducing sugars), seem to constitute the primary nutrient reserves for gonad growth. Proteins are also available to meet ovarian requirements during vitellogenesis. Glycogen levels are high in late autumn and winter and low at spawning time and in summer, whereas levels of the other reducing sugars are high in post-spawning months and subsequently gradually decrease during gonad development. The total lipid level is extremely variable (averaging 75 mg g-1 organ fresh weight), peak levels of over 200 mg g-1 being found in some individuals in summer and at spawning time. The free amino acid level is constant at about 20 mg g-1. The protein level is rather high throughout the annual cycle, and displays only minor changes. The observed patterns of decrease in major constituents suggest a rapid release of nutrient reserves from the pyloric caeca (deposited during the summer) at the onset of vitellogenesis. Moreover, the needs of the ovaries during further development seem to be so tremendous that during the winter months the digested food may be transported to the ovaries without prior deposition in the pyloric caeca. The changes observed in the pyloric caeca are discussed and compared with those occurring simultaneously in the ovaries.  相似文献

Detailed information is presented on the changes in lipid-class profiles (polar lipids, total neutral lipids, free sterols, steryl esters, triacylglycerols, neutral ether lipids and free fatty acids), which are manifest during the annual reproductive cycle of the seastarAsterias rubens for both the storage organs (pyloric caeca) and utilizing organs (ovaries). The ovaries appear to accumulate all individual lipid components proportional to progression of vitellogenesis. Pyloric caeca, in contrast, show variable lipid-class levels, probably due to more complex processes in these organs, operating simultaneously: digestion of food, accumulation of storage lipids, mobilization of stored lipids and their release. The results are discussed in terms of current knowledge on the role of lipids in echinoderm reproduction.  相似文献

The starfish Cosmasterias lurida was sampled from the pier piles of Almirante Storni in the Golfo Nuevo, northern Patagonia, from November 2001 to November 2003. In this anthropogenically modified site there is an unusually abundant food supply of mussels and large aggregations of starfishes. The reproductive cycle was studied by organ indices and histological examination of gonads. The highest gonad index (GI) values were found in the summer (February–March), followed by a drop in GI values, indicating spawning. Histological analyses indicated that gametogenesis takes place from June to January, sexual maturity occurred during the summer and spawning occurred in April. The GI and pyloric caeca index (PCI) tended to have an inverse relationship, but this was only statistically significant in males. However, biochemical analyses of the starfish indicated no transfer of nutrients between pyloric caeca and gonads in either sex. In fact, simultaneous accumulation of carbohydrates was found in the pyloric caeca and gonads of both sexes.  相似文献

Two morphs of the asteroid genus Echinaster, E. Type 1 and E. Type 2, have reciprocal annual cycles of reproduction and nutrient storage. The pyloric caeca (storage organs) reach maximal size over winter then decrease with increasing gametogenic activity in the spring. E. Type 1 broadcasts buoyant eggs in late May to early June. E. Type 2 deposits benthic eggs in late April. Lecithotrophic larval development is similar in both morphs except that larvae of E. Type 1 undergo a brief planktonic phase. E. Type 1 reaches sexual maturity at a larger size, expends a lower reproductive effort but has a greater absolute reproductive output than E. Type 2. E. Type 2 produces fewer, larger eggs and has a greater parental investment per egg. In both morphs, females have much higher gonadal lipid levels than males and expend a higher reproductive effort in terms organic matter and energy. Reproductive effort, reproductive output, nutrient storage in the pyloric caeca and body size varied between populations and between years in each morph. Egg size and parental investment per egg were constant. Within-morph variability is attributed to differences in nutritional state. Differences in reproductive strategy support the hypothesis that the morphs are separate species.  相似文献

Seasonal lipid analyses were performed on the gonads and residual bodies of Ctenodiscus crispatus (Retzius) and Asterias lincki (Müller & Troschel), collected from Balsfjorden, northern Norway during March 1978–February 1980. The ovaries of both species had high percentages of total lipid (in the region of 60% of the dry weight) that were relatively constant throughout the season. Testes from both species had in the region of 20% of their dry weight as lipid, again with little seasonal variation. The majority of the total lipid in the ovaries of C. crispatus was accounted for by alkyldiacylglycerols and there was little seasonal variation in lipid class composition. Phospholipid accounted for the bulk of the lipid in the testes of C. crispatus, where alkyldiacylglycerols were present but in minor amounts. A slight degree of seasonal variation occurred in the composition of testis lipid in that maximal percentages of triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols occurred in January–April. The ovaries of A. lincki contained both triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols as major neutral lipids. Significant seasonal variation occurred in lipid class composition in the ovaries in that neutral lipids showed transient minima in February–April. The testes of A. lincki had substantial amounts of both triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols: maximal percentages of these lipids occurred in January–March. Analyses of gonads of near-mature Pteraster militaris (O. F. Müller) revealed that the ovaries were rich in lipid that was predominantly alkyldiacylglycerols, whereas the testes had much lower levels of lipid accounted for mainly by phospholipids. The residual bodies of all three asteroids had significant but small amounts of alkyldiacylglycerols in their lipids. A. lincki had triacylglycerols as a major lipid class in its body lipids, whereas in C. crispatus the major body lipid was phospholipid. Little seasonal variation was seen in the composition of the residual body lipid of either C. crispatus or A. lincki. The results are consistent with an aseasonal reproductive pattern in C. crispatus, although a main breeding activity occurred in mid-winter. A. lincki is a more seasonal breeder, but also had maximal activity in winter. Irrespective of their breeding habits, all three asteroids produced eggs rich in alkyldiacylglycerols. A major role for this lipid in the development of the large lecithotrophic eggs of asteroids is indicated.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in pyloric caecum and gonad indices were studied in a population of the seastar Asterias forbesi (Desor) from East Rockaway Inlet (Long Island, New York) during two annual cycles (1980/81, 1982/83). Pyloric caeca indices increased during fall, reached a maximum about April, and declined sharply to a minimum in mid-summer. Gonad indices increased during fall and winter and reached a maximum about May. Judging from gonad size analysis, spawning occurred in late June to early July, at bottom temperatures of 16° to 18°C. There was no long-term inverse relationship between pyloric caecum and gonad indices. Since nutrients and energy ingested during the important fall feeding period are utilized simultaneously for body growth and gonad development, it is unnecessary for the pyloric caeca to store nutrients over long periods as occurs in A. rubens and many other species. The specific caeca-gonad relationship is probably an adaptation to the extreme seasonal thermal fluctuations of the NW Atlantic, which constrain the feeding activity of A. forbesi and limit the possibility of long-term storage. In this population, most individuals grow rapidly in their first year (including first two summers) and spawn in their third summer. Few seastars survive to spawn again in their fourth summer. However, gametogenesis may take place in some individuals in their second summer. Year-to-year variability in mean size at spawning may reflect temporal variation in environmental conditions (weather, food availability) at this site.  相似文献

Sexual and asexual reproduction of the fissiparous starfish Allostichaster capensis were examined for 24 months at Bahía Kaiser, Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, Argentina. Gonad indices revealed an annual reproductive cycle, with peak development occurring in late winter (August). Spawning occurred in spring (September). Pyloric caeca indices displayed a clear annual cycle and a reciprocal relationship with gonad indices, showing the storage function of pyloric caeca. The starfish population appears to be largely maintained by fission, as only two females were found. A. capensis also showed an annual cycle of fission, with the highest frequency in spring and summer (from November to January), just after spawning. Seasonal determinants of body weight, biochemical composition and reproductive condition in the cockle Cerastoderma edule L. from the Mundaca Estuary, Spain, were performed from December 1983 to July 1985. Interannual differences in timing of gametogenesis and spawning between 1984 and 1985 were correlated with temporal variations in the cycles of storage and utilisation of carbohydrate reserves. Young individuals exhibited larger annual fluctuations in soft-body weight, displaying higher growth rates in spring and greater diminishment of energy reserves during autumn and winter than older individuals. Carbohydrate content displayed a similar tendency, levels being lower in young individuals throughout the year.  相似文献

Reproduction of Asterina stellifera was studied in two populations from the Cabo Frio region, southeastern Brazil. One was located in an intertidal seagrass flat at Japonês Island (1994–1995); the second was on a sublittoral rocky shore at Pontal beaches (1999–2000). Reproductive cycle was studied at monthly intervals by organ indices and histological examinations of gonads. Although these two populations were studied in different habitats and at different times, the periodicity of the annual reproductive cycle was very similar for the two populations. The highest gonad index (GI) values were found in August/September (late winter), followed by a drop in GI values, indicating spawning. The GI and pyloric caeca index (PCI) tended to have an inverse relationship in both populations, but it was only statistically significant in the rocky-shore population. The bathyal West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) shelf experiences intense seasonal variability in primary production, with summer phytoplankton blooms yielding intense pulse of phytodetritus to shelf sediments. Echinoderms form a conspicuous proportion of the deposit-feeding megabenthos on the shelf and of these Amphipneustes lorioli was the most abundant irregular echinoid. To explore the reproductive response of A. lorioli to this seasonal production cycle, A. Lorioli was sampled at one location on the WAP shelf during four separate cruises between March 2000 and March 2001. Reproductive patterns were determined by histological analyses of gonad tissue, and elemental (CHN) analyses were used to estimate the nutritional and energetic status of the body tissues. Histological analysis of the brooding echinoid A. lorioli suggested a quasi-continuous gametogenic pattern in both the ovaries and the testes. Biochemical analysis of the gonads and the gut tissues were consistent with a continuous gametogenic cycle, showing no significant changes in the biochemical composition of the tissues among seasons. Size-frequency distributions of the embryo and juvenile echinoids within the adults’ brood pouches revealed a synchronous recruitment of embryos and juveniles in specific cohorts between different adult specimens. Whilst this occurrence of different cohorts of the developing brood may be an adaptation to limited brood space, there may also be an external factor influencing the synchrony between adult individuals. Nonetheless, a continuous gametogenic cycle and the lack of seasonal variation in the biochemical composition of gonad and gut tissues suggest that this deposit-feeding irregular urchin is exploiting a persistent sediment food bank in WAP shelf sediments throughout much of the year.  相似文献

Asexual and sexual reproduction were studied in an intertidal population of Nepanthia belcheri (Perrier) at Townsville, Queensland, Australia, by regular sampling over a year (March 1976-March 1977) and by histological analysis of gonads. Fission reached a peak in early winter (April–June), when about 45% of the population showed evidence of recent fission. Propensity for fission was unrelated to longest arm length. Seven-armed seastars predominated in the population and these underwent fission in two stages to produce one 3-armed fragment and two 2-armed fragments. Fission planes were not related to numbers or positions of madreporites. Hermaphroditism was a normal sexual condition in the population. Almost all gonads contained oocytes, but some gonads functioned as ovaries (without spermatogenic tissue) while others functioned as testes. Seastars with mature ovaries were significantly larger than those with mature testes, indicating protandry, as in other hermaphroditic asteroids. However, fission complicates the pattern of gonad development by causing regression or retardation of gonads and by apparently having a masculinizing effect, so that ovaries may change to testes in fission products. There was a period of sexual reproduction in early summer (October–November). This followed the period of intense fission and regeneration, and a population change from predominately functional females to males. Consequently there was an extreme imbalance against mature females at sexual reproduction, further reducing potential fecundity. Thus, sexual reproduction was very subordinate to fission as the means of recruitment. The 450 m diam eggs probably give rise to pelagic lecithotrophic development and, if this is the case, N. belcheri retains the advantage of complementing reliable recruitment from fission with a dispersive phase. The combination of fission and hermaphroditism is particularly advantageous for a very sparse dispersal of larvae, as a functionally dioecious population may develop from one larva settling in a new locality.  相似文献

The biochemical and energetic composition of body components of ten species of bathyal echinoids, and an asteroid, a holothuroid and a stalked crinoid were determined from individuals sampled from a variety of deep-water sites near the Bahamas (north Caribbean Sea) in October 1988. When compared with other studies of echinoderms, no geographic- or depth-related differences in biochemical or energetic composition were found. Body-wall tissues were composed primarily of skeletal material (mineral ash), but were comparatively high in organic material in the echinothuriid echinoids, and the asteroid and holothuroid. Gut tissues and pyloric cecae had high levels of lipid and protein, indicating their potential role in nutrient storage. Body-wall tissues were generally low in energy, but were highest in the echinoidsAraeosoma belli (7.7 kJ g–1 dry wt) andSperosoma antillense (8.0 kJ g–1 dry wt), the asteroidOphidiaster alexandri (8.9 kJ g–1 dry wt), and the holothuroidEostichopus regalis (13.1 kJ g–1 dry wt). Energy levels of gut and pyloric cecal tissues were two to three times higher than those of body-wall tissues. Total somatic tissue energy values varied greatly among species, ranging from 1.5 kJ in the echinoidAspidodiadema jacobyi to 142.1 kJ inE. regalis. As the bathyal echinoderms examined in this study occur in great abundance, they represent a significant reservoir of organic and inorganic materials and energy in deep-water benthic systems.  相似文献

The gonad index in the deposit-feeding asteroid Ctenodiscus crispatus (Retzius) in the Gulf of Maine (USA) is seasonally less variable than in any other sea star, ranging from 2.99 to 4.98% of dry body weight in females and from 2.28 to 3.42% in males, and varies in concert with, rather than reciprocal to, the pyloric caecum index. Biochemical composition and, hence, caloric content, of the gonads also show little seasonal change, suggesting that reproduction is aseasonal and continuous in this population. Oocyte development is asynchronous, all females having a full size range of oocytes (from less than 30 m to greater than 400 m diameter) throughout the year. Seasonally determined size-frequency distributions of juveniles, oocyte cytology and size-frequency distributions, responsiveness of adult females to 1-methyladenine, and oxygen uptake rates indicate that variations in reproductive intensity are superimposed on continuous reproduction, and seem related to changes in phytoplankton production rather than to temperature. The rich neutral lipid content (ca. 50% of total lipid) and large egg size (>400 m) in the ovaries suggest that development is direct. The population is extremely variable genetically, polymorphism among 13 enzyme-coding genes being 77% and average heterozygosity being 0.174. The reproductive pattern and genetic variation in the eurybathic C. crispatus are similar to those in deep-sea echinoderms. This may be related to the constancy of the population's detrital food source, to small-scale heterogeneity of its physical environment, and to low individual vagility.  相似文献

The gonads of sea urchins undergo large changes in mass during their gametogenic cycle. In addition, they have relatively low aerobic capacities and are poorly perfused by the circulatory system and thus are continually hypoxic or anoxic. The present study of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis investigates seasonal changes in the relationships among mass of the ovaries, pH and PO2 of the perivisceral coelomic fluid which bathes the ovaries, and partitioning of ovary energy metabolism into its anaerobic and aerobic components. S. droebachiensis were collected at Blue Hill Falls, Maine, USA, from August 1982 to March 1984. We found that from 76 to 92% of the heat dissipated by isolated ovaries of the sea urchin S. droebachiensis derives from anaerobic energy metabolism at partial pressures of oxygen prevailing in vivo. Ovaries from S. droebachiensis have the capacity to produce large amounts of lactate under imposed anoxia, but lactate accounts for only 37% of the total anoxic heat dissipation, which suggests that other end products of anaerobiosis are present. Seasonal changes in pH and PO2 of the perivisceral coelomic fluid can be explained by a complex relationship among changes in temperature, reproductive condition, and anaerobic and aerobic metabolism in the ovaries, gut and body wall. Seasonal changes in the buffering capacity of the perivisceral coelomic fluid must be determined before the effects of respiratory and metabolic acid production on the acid-base status of the coelomic fluid can be fully understood.  相似文献

We examined the social organization and reproductive pattern of a population of Sparisoma cretense L. at Lampedusa Island (Italy). During the breeding season (July to September) individuals occur either in territorial or in non-territorial groups, which quantitatively differ with respect to use of space, sex-ratio and sexual activity. Territorial groups consist of one male plus one to three females, whereas in non-territorial groups as many as 54 fish share a common area. Among non-territorial groups, variations, in both sex-ratio and behavior, suggest they could represent either feeding aggregations or reproductive aggregations. Spawning, always in pairs, occurs daily in a short period of time before dusk and has been observed only in territorial groups. Group spawning has never been observed, but another alternative mating tactic, streaking on pair spawning, was recorded. In the non-breeding season fish do not aggregate in organized social units. Histological examination of gonads showed that adults are larger than 12 cm total length. Females have an asynchronous ovary, typical of species spawning several times during the breeding season. Males show secondary testes, indicating that their gonads develop ovaries as juveniles, which are later redifferentiated into functional testes. Histological and demographic data seem to indicate that, as in other species of this genus, prematurational sex-change occurs. Changes in size, morphology, and biochemical composition in adults and embryos of a brooding sea star, Neosmilaster georgianus (Sladen), were studied in a population adjacent to Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula (64°46′S; 64°04′W) during the austral spring, 1991. Five morphological stages of development were designated in 24 broods, and for each the weight and biochemical composition of the brooding adults and their embryos were determined. Between Stage 1 and 2, the dry weight (dw) and organic weight (ow) of the embryo did not change. From Stage 2 to 3, the dw and ow increased significantly by 10%. Stage 2 and 3 embryos were in clusters of a few (2 to 10) to as many as 40 individuals. In the smaller clusters, individual embryos were attached by tissue cords to another, sometimes atrophied, brood member. In the larger clusters, they were attached to a central mass of tissue containing remnants of embryos. We interpret these interactions as a form of cannibalism which may account for the weight gains between Stage 2 and 3. During Stages 4 and 5, as juvenile form was approached, the dw and ash weight of the young increased significantly and the ow decreased significantly. The calculated energy content for the juvenile (Stage 5) was not significantly different from the energy content of the earliest undifferentiated stage (Stage 1), an indication that most of the organic matter in the egg is the primary contribution to the large juvenile. In brooding females, pyloric caeca indices declined by 52% from Stage 1 to Stage 5 and pyloric energy stores declined by 63% due to proportionately equivalent declines in protein and lipid. The ovary index was low and increased only slightly during brood protection, while the size of the largest oocytes remained approximately 23% that of ova. Energy stores in the pyloric caeca of brooding N. georgianus thus become depleted over a long period of incubation during which the adults apparently starve.
